be_v bring_v by_o cavil_v man_n to_o believe_v god_n existence_n his_o justice_n to_o punish_v and_o reward_v immortality_n of_o soul_n distinction_n of_o action_n right_a and_o wrong_n universal_a where_o the_o defect_n of_o ignorance_n or_o infirmity_n be_v manifest_a out_o of_o friendship_n but_o then_o with_o deferrence_n to_o the_o person_n own_o judgement_n and_o determination_n at_o man_n be_v a_o prince_n and_o supreme_a moderator_n to_o himself_o under_o god_n in_o abundance_n of_o his_o action_n most_o of_o his_o external_n such_o as_o domestic_a one_o and_o personal_n especial_o and_o of_o his_o internal_a as_o his_o willing_a design_v intention_n opinion_n and_o judgement_n and_o it_o be_v most_o for_o the_o public_a or_o universal_a good_a it_o shall_v be_v so_o and_o man_n shall_v be_v leave_v to_o the_o exercise_n and_o use_v of_o their_o own_o prudence_n and_o liberty_n in_o many_o thing_n though_o they_o shall_v not_o so_o well_o use_v it_o altogether_o as_o they_o may_v the_o one_o may_v be_v a_o great_a good_a than_o the_o other_o a_o evil_a beside_o it_o be_v most_o likely_a every_o person_n shall_v best_o know_v the_o circumstance_n of_o his_o own_o especial_o more_o private_a action_n and_o consequent_o what_o be_v fit_a to_o be_v do_v or_o not_o do_v or_o if_o any_o do_v better_a know_v sometime_o and_o be_v better_a and_o more_o virtuous_a to_o direct_v yet_o how_o shall_v it_o be_v know_v when_o and_o who_o will_v not_o pretend_v to_o it_o so_o that_o there_o will_v be_v nothing_o but_o confusion_n and_o every_o one_o will_v be_v every_o one_o lord_n and_o master_n and_o yet_o i_o dare_v say_v it_o be_v to_o be_v observe_v a_o most_o frequent_a piece_n of_o injustice_n and_o tyranny_n and_o run_v through_o all_o sort_n of_o man_n and_o lodge_v even_o in_o the_o beggar_n breast_n man_n be_v not_o content_a man_n shall_v be_v judge_n in_o any_o of_o their_o own_o affair_n even_o private_a and_o personal_n but_o they_o will_v be_v judge_v direct_a reprove_v urge_v and_o force_v as_o much_o as_o they_o can_v they_o to_o be_v and_o do_v as_o they_o will_v have_v they_o lord_v and_o domineer_a over_o other_o not_o seasonable_o modest_o and_o friendly_a advise_v only_o this_o gratify_v and_o increase_v pride_n in_o we_o also_o and_o this_o be_v that_o in_o part_n which_o the_o apostle_n reprove_v in_o rom._n 14.4_o who_o be_v thou_o that_o judge_v another_o man_n servant_n why_o will_v thou_o be_v govenrour_n of_o another_o man_n and_o needs_o have_v and_o force_v he_o compel_v he_o to_o judge_n and_o do_v as_o thou_o judge_v or_o else_o will_v hate_v he_o despise_v and_o blame_v he_o in_o word_n too_o i_o suppose_v if_o he_o do_v not_o when-as_a in_o this_o case_n he_o be_v only_a subject_n to_o god_n sect._n ii_o ii_o the_o evil_a consequence_n of_o too_o much_o proneness_n to_o judge_n on_o the_o worst_a side_n i_o speak_v as_o to_o the_o effect_n only_o though_o the_o principle_n be_v not_o bad_a be_v 1._o that_o it_o lead_v a_o man_n to_o false_a judgement_n and_o to_o judge_v person_n worse_o than_o they_o be_v 2._o that_o it_o consequent_o dispose_v a_o man_n to_o contemn_v undervalue_n nay_o hate_v a_o person_n more_o than_o he_o deserve_v whence_o 3._o it_o beget_v suspicion_n and_o belief_n in_o other_o that_o this_o his_o judgement_n come_v from_o the_o worst_a principle_n of_o self-love_n hatred_n revenge_n pride_n envy_n contempt_n etc._n etc._n when_o it_o real_o may_v not_o be_v so_o whence_o 4._o it_o dispose_v and_o give_v occasion_n and_o be_v but_o too_o often_o a_o effectual_a temptation_n both_o in_o those_o who_o he_o thus_o judge_v and_o other_o to_o contempt_n hatred_n and_o revenge_n towards_o he_o and_o that_o by_o observe_v and_o mark_v make_v know_v and_o publish_v his_o fault_n and_o infirmity_n too_o which_o real_o be_v so_o which_o otherwise_o they_o neither_o will_v nor_o shall_v have_v do_v nay_o by_o add_v thereto_o increase_v their_o number_n and_o greatness_n and_o judge_v he_o worse_o than_o he_o be_v as_o the_o former_a have_v do_v by_o his_o neighbour_n whence_o further_a hatred_n and_o contempt_n reciprocal_o from_o they_o to_o he_o and_o more_o than_o he_o deserve_v too_o hence_o again_o it_o may_v be_v hatred_n and_o revenge_n stir_v up_o in_o he_o again_o against_o they_o so_o that_o now_o behold_v what_o a_o the_o first_o we_o multiply_v and_o magnify_v the_o imperfection_n infirmity_n defect_n ill-quality_n of_o other_o here_o the_o good_a one_o sure_o much_o the_o better_a extreme_a as_o to_o its_o effect_n as_o it_o seem_v even_o when_o it_o proceed_v from_o ultimate_a self-love_n as_o well_o as_o the_o other_o extreme_a which_o be_v too_o often_o and_o not_o out_o of_o charity_n a_o more_o particular_a and_o very_a useful_a instance_n of_o the_o first_o general_n be_v when_o we_o judge_v the_o action_n of_o man_n to_o proceed_v from_o worse_a principle_n end_n design_n and_o quality_n in_o they_o than_o indeed_o they_o do_v a_o thing_n the_o more_o diligent_o and_o careful_o to_o be_v avoid_v because_o of_o very_o mischievous_a and_o evil_a consequence_n and_o yet_o extraordinary_a frequent_a and_o easy_a to_o be_v fall_v into_o thus_o often_o we_o accuse_v and_o condemn_v man_n of_o covetousness_n pride_n unconscientiousness_n or_o the_o like_a from_o some_o action_n which_o real_o be_v the_o effect_n much_o of_o a_o wise_a and_o discreet_a virtue_n and_o have_v very_o little_a mixture_n if_o any_o of_o these_o vice_n a_o thing_n very_o often_o especial_o happen_v in_o refusal_n or_o deny_v the_o crave_n and_o desire_n of_o other_o thus_o we_o accuse_v man_n often_o of_o great_a wilfulness_n when_o it_o be_v weakness_n of_o wickedness_n or_o evil-disposition_n of_o will_n when_o it_o be_v ignorance_n and_o imprudence_n of_o deliberate_a mischievousness_n when_o it_o be_v a_o sudden_a surprise_n how_o often_o shall_v you_o hear_v man_n fierce_o accuse_v one_o mistake_v man_n not_o attend_v forgetfulness_n or_o the_o like_a this_o be_v very_o often_o see_v in_o the_o behaviour_n of_o sect_n and_o party_n one_o towards_o another_o where_o the_o inconsistency_n of_o opinion_n with_o good_a conscience_n be_v often_o fierce_o affirm_v too_o universal_o before_o it_o be_v know_v what_o advantage_n they_o have_v have_v for_o information_n though_o i_o acknowledge_v too_o there_o may_v be_v oft_o very_o sufficient_a sign_n for_o a_o very_a probable_a judgement_n this_o rash_a and_o false_a judgement_n in_o these_o or_o the_o like_a instance_n be_v so_o mischievous_a and_o yet_o frequent_a be_v as_o i_o say_v when_o it_o be_v on_o the_o false_a side_n diligent_o to_o be_v avoid_v and_o rather_o let_v the_o defect_n the_o rashness_n and_o the_o mistake_n be_v on_o the_o other_o hand_n which_o usual_o argue_v much_o of_o wisdom_n and_o charity_n good_a nature_n and_o a_o great_a freedom_n from_o ultimate_a and_o inordinate_a self-love_n and_o especial_o when_o it_o be_v towards_o adversary_n and_o therefore_o it_o be_v a_o lovely_a and_o amiable_a thing_n it_o be_v call_v good_a interpretation_n and_o candour_n when_o one_o judge_v most_o favourable_o and_o put_v the_o best_a sense_n and_o meaning_n upon_o action_n and_o external_a appearance_n when_o there_o be_v equal_a probability_n on_o both_o side_n or_o there_o be_v none_o at_o all_o of_o either_o appear_v and_o when_o it_o be_v constrain_v to_o judge_n worse_o it_o be_v with_o pity_n according_a to_o that_o invaluable_a 13_o chap._n of_o the_o first_o epistle_n to_o the_o corinthian_n to_o be_v write_v in_o the_o most_o deep_a and_o last_a character_n in_o our_o soul_n and_o to_o be_v read_v every_o morning_n nay_o as_o oft_o as_o may_v be_v verse_n 5._o charity_n as_o it_o bear_v all_o thing_n so_o it_o believe_v and_o hope_v all_o thing_n sect._n v._n 5._o the_o five_o thing_n forbid_v be_v too_o great_a a_o proneness_n and_o aptness_n to_o pronounce_v to_o declare_v and_o make_v know_v our_o judgement_n and_o opinion_n concern_v other_o especial_o on_o the_o bad_a side_n to_o be_v always_o talk_v thereof_o though_o to_o no_o visible_a good_a effect_n nor_o out_o of_o any_o good_a principle_n and_o to_o be_v in_o pain_n as_o it_o be_v till_o they_o have_v deliver_v themselves_o and_o this_o usual_o come_v too_o from_o the_o inordinate_a love_n of_o activity_n of_o do_v somewhat_o of_o restlessness_n which_o be_v call_v busibodiness_n and_o sometime_o from_o the_o other_o worse_a quality_n so_o often_o mention_v malice_n pride_n envy_n revenge_n etc._n etc._n and_o most_o from_o a_o mixture_n of_o more_o of_o they_o together_o with_o all_o which_o too_o as_o in_o all_o other_o action_n of_o man_n insincere_a as_o most_o be_v i_o doubt_v some_o small_a mixture_n sometime_o there_o may_v be_v of_o justice_n that_o be_v of_o a_o kind_n of_o common_a charity_n this_o too_o great_a proneness_n or_o inclination_n consider_v without_o its_o principle_n or_o end_n as_o i_o have_v tell_v you_o before_o admit_v of_o variety_n some_o man_n ought_v to_o have_v more_o as_o all_o governor_n and_o overseer_n of_o other_o manner_n or_o in_o general_a of_o their_o good_a quality_n those_o also_o that_o find_v the_o good_a effect_n of_o good_a instruction_n self-amendment_n kind_o and_o laudable_a emulation_n pity_v a_o endeavour_n for_o the_o good_a of_o the_o faulty_a and_o of_o other_o to_o amend_v or_o prevent_v the_o same_o elsewhere_o other_o on_o the_o contrary_n who_o be_v private_a person_n in_o a_o private_a capacity_n or_o condition_n apt_a to_o gratify_v thereby_o their_o envy_n pride_n hatred_n contempt_n of_o other_o self-conceit_n affectation_n of_o superiority_n will_v have_v seldome_a sufficient_a reason_n to_o pass_v or_o declare_v their_o judgement_n and_o when_o they_o have_v the_o good_a effect_n be_v not_o so_o considerable_a in_o they_o as_o in_o the_o former_a person_n consequent_o they_o must_v nourish_v a_o lesser_a proneness_n and_o inclination_n thereto_o these_o man_n also_o who_o find_v they_o can_v better_o discern_v choose_v govern_z and_o instruct_v themselves_o in_o all_o circumstance_n of_o declare_v their_o opinion_n concern_v person_n such_o as_o i_o have_v before_o mention_v of_o the_o person_n judge_v the_o person_n before_o who_o etc._n etc._n these_o also_o may_v be_v more_o free_a and_o allow_v themselves_o more_o of_o this_o proneness_n those_o on_o the_o contrary_a who_o may_v and_o aught_o to_o observe_v themselves_o forgetful_a unable_a to_o take_v notice_n or_o discern_v the_o fit_a circumstance_n or_o not_o to_o be_v able_a to_o moderate_v or_o govern_v themselves_o when_o they_o do_v but_o what_o they_o have_v in_o their_o mind_n it_o must_v come_v out_o those_o who_o be_v thus_o dull_a and_o weak_a aught_o to_o lay_v aside_o this_o proneness_n and_o inclination_n to_o subjugate_v or_o weaken_v it_o so_o far_o forth_o and_o to_o betake_v themselves_o more_o to_o mind_n their_o own_o affair_n immediate_o in_o general_n of_o which_o more_o hereafter_o the_o declaration_n of_o this_o our_o judgement_n must_v always_o be_v do_v with_o all_o the_o sign_n and_o with_o the_o best_a effect_n we_o can_v of_o charity_n in_o do_v good_a and_o consequent_o self-denial_n charity_n i_o say_v sometime_o more_o immediate_o respect_v the_o person_n of_o who_o we_o judge_v sometime_o ourselves_o it_o may_v be_v as_o in_o the_o case_n of_o sin_n when_o we_o ought_v to_o vindicate_v ourselves_o sometime_o some_o other_o bystander_n sometime_o altogether_o be_v sure_o let_v there_o not_o appear_v any_o the_o least_o sign_n of_o do_v it_o out_o of_o ultimate_a respect_n to_o ourselves_o in_o any_o kind_n nor_o let_v the_o effect_n be_v only_o such_o with_o a_o neglect_n of_o or_o in_o opposition_n to_o the_o good_a of_o the_o person_n or_o other_o and_o a_o great_a many_o sign_n there_o be_v of_o this_o which_o may_v better_v come_v in_o in_o another_o place_n sect._n vi._n 6._o and_o last_o and_o above_o all_o be_v here_o forbid_a the_o undue_a end_n of_o our_o judge_v other_o viz._n self-pleasing_a ultimate_o and_o that_o several_a way_n by_o other_o hurt_n or_o mischief_n positive_a or_o privative_a these_o be_v malice_n hatred_n pride_n envy_n revenge_n flattery_n and_o base_a fear_n busibodiness_n curiosity_n etc._n etc._n this_o be_v that_o which_o be_v here_o principal_o intend_v this_o main_o advise_v against_o by_o our_o saviour_n as_o also_o judge_v on_o the_o worst_a side_n suspect_v accuse_v condemn_a person_n out_o of_o the_o foresay_a principle_n as_o appear_v by_o the_o reason_n subjoin_v both_o in_o this_o and_o the_o next_o verse_n judge_n not_o be_v here_o take_v in_o the_o sense_n in_o which_o that_o you_o be_v not_o judge_v be_v but_o by_o
that_o be_v mean_v suspect_v accuse_v condemn_v by_o other_o principal_o out_o of_o the_o former_a principle_n for_o if_o it_o be_v mean_v of_o the_o judgement_n of_o the_o good_a side_n the_o avoid_n of_o that_o will_v be_v no_o motive_n not_o to_o judge_n because_o it_o will_v not_o seem_v a_o evil_n to_o the_o person_n judge_v i_o say_v principal_o moreover_o i_o have_v mention_v the_o defect_n of_o be_v too_o prone_a in_o general_a to_o pass_v judgement_n though_o it_o may_v happen_v on_o the_o good_a side_n and_o so_o to_o declare_v one_o judgement_n and_o to_o judge_v rash_o or_o false_o though_o still_o on_o the_o good_a side_n on_o this_o occasion_n as_o belong_v to_o our_o judgement_n to_o suggest_v unto_o you_o that_o they_o may_v be_v occasional_o forbid_v too_o and_o be_v defect_n infirmity_n all_o the_o forementioned_a particular_n if_o they_o can_v be_v suppose_v to_o proceed_v not_o from_o these_o bad_a principle_n but_o from_o good_a viz._n charity_n though_o imprudent_a and_o mistake_v though_o they_o may_v be_v immediate_o hurtful_a and_o do_v mischief_n yet_o they_o be_v not_o vicious_a faulty_a wicked_a but_o more_o of_o this_o when_o we_o come_v to_o the_o cause_n of_o these_o forbid_a judge_n here_o especial_o of_o rash_a and_o false_a one_o chap._n iii_o sect._n i._n but_o what_o judgement_n be_v here_o not_o forbid_v though_o they_o may_v be_v apt_a to_o be_v mistake_v for_o those_o which_o be_v and_o in_o general_a these_o two_o viz._n 1._o not_o a_o observe_v or_o judge_v out_o of_o charity_n a_o sincere_a and_o unmixed_a charity_n for_o sometime_o sure_o we_o may_v exercise_v our_o charity_n both_o in_o good_a and_o bad_a judgement_n the_o principal_a thing_n here_o forbid_v be_v pass_v our_o judgement_n out_o of_o bad_a principle_n such_o as_o be_v ultimate_a selfishness_n malice_n hatred_n pride_n envy_n etc._n etc._n but_o then_o the_o contrary_n can_v be_v forbid_v to_o pass_v judgement_n out_o of_o a_o good_a one_o and_o the_o only_a good_a one_o viz._n charity_n or_o goodwill_n unless_o all_o principle_n of_o a_o man_n action_n be_v forbid_v sect._n ii_o nor_o second_o be_v it_o ever_o forbid_a to_o a_o person_n when_o there_o be_v more_o good_a effect_n of_o his_o do_v this_o than_o of_o his_o omission_n nay_o then_o contrariwise_a he_o be_v command_v to_o do_v it_o the_o first_o respect_v our_o principle_n or_o end_n the_o second_o our_o prudence_n or_o the_o effect_n the_o first_o of_o these_o may_v be_v without_o the_o second_o viz._n a_o man_n may_v give_v his_o judgement_n and_o opinion_n concern_v person_n and_o action_n out_o of_o charity_n and_o very_o good_a intention_n of_o do_v the_o most_o good_a unlimited_o in_o general_n whether_o it_o be_v particular_o apply_v to_o ourselves_o or_o other_o or_o both_o and_o yet_o as_o far_o as_o we_o see_v the_o effect_n of_o it_o may_v be_v bad_a a_o man_n may_v both_o inward_o and_o outward_o commend_v and_o discommend_v person_n unreasonable_o with_o a_o very_a good_a meaning_n through_o want_n of_o information_n and_o so_o the_o second_o may_v be_v without_o the_o first_o too_o that_o be_v there_o may_v be_v very_o good_a effect_n and_o consequence_n of_o a_o man_n pass_v and_o pronounce_v his_o judgement_n when_o the_o principle_n may_v be_v bad_a enough_o a_o man_n may_v approve_v or_o condemn_v what_o be_v true_o good_a or_o bad_a in_o other_o and_o consequent_o dispose_v himself_o and_o other_o to_o a_o imitation_n of_o the_o one_o and_o a_o eschew_v of_o the_o other_o especial_o if_o he_o be_v a_o person_n of_o some_o esteem_n and_o yet_o he_o may_v do_v the_o first_o out_o of_o fear_n or_o flattery_n or_o because_o it_o be_v like_o somewhat_o in_o himself_o not_o because_o it_o be_v a_o quality_n or_o thing_n real_o profitable_a to_o the_o world_n and_o therefore_o will_v have_v it_o more_o propagate_v and_o the_o second_o out_o of_o envy_n hatred_n etc._n etc._n not_o because_o it_o be_v a_o thing_n mischievous_a and_o hurtful_a to_o the_o person_n himself_o to_o other_o or_o displease_v to_o god_n almighty_a in_o sum_n whensoever_o it_o do_v appear_v to_o any_o man_n that_o it_o will_v be_v worse_o if_o he_o do_v not_o pass_v his_o judgement_n that_o there_o will_v be_v worse_a consequence_n thereof_o than_o if_o he_o do_v any_o where_o to_o other_o as_o well_o as_o himself_o consider_v himself_o but_o as_o any_o other_o person_n just_a in_o the_o same_o circumstance_n and_o to_o do_v it_o for_o this_o very_a reason_n and_o cause_n this_o common_a good_a this_o i_o say_v be_v not_o here_o prohibit_v sect._n iii_o three_o but_o more_o particular_o therefore_o in_o the_o first_o place_n it_o be_v not_o universal_o prohibit_v here_o to_o pass_v judgement_n in_o the_o case_n and_o circumstance_n i_o have_v former_o mention_v and_o innumerable_a more_o if_o we_o descend_v to_o particular_n it_o be_v not_o it_o be_v much_o permit_v nay_o enjoin_v to_o governor_n somewhat_o less_o to_o private_a person_n laudable_a it_o be_v in_o man_n to_o have_v regard_n to_o and_o observe_v the_o quality_n and_o action_n general_o of_o those_o that_o be_v their_o superior_n to_o compare_v their_o own_o with_o and_o see_v their_o defect_n and_o to_o be_v excite_v to_o amendment_n and_o imitation_n to_o look_v at_o and_o to_o judge_v their_o own_o fault_n in_o other_o if_o thereby_o they_o find_v themselves_o dispose_v to_o see_v they_o more_o clear_o in_o themselves_o and_o to_o be_v put_v in_o mind_n of_o they_o laudable_a it_o be_v to_o observe_v good_a quality_n in_o other_o that_o we_o may_v rejoice_v in_o they_o and_o be_v glad_a to_o see_v any_o thing_n good_a in_o the_o world_n and_o be_v able_a to_o encourage_v it_o by_o a_o discreet_a observation_n and_o commendation_n thereof_o consequent_o we_o be_v not_o command_v to_o be_v negligent_a and_o utter_o careless_a of_o what_o other_o man_n care_v or_o do_v for_o this_o be_v contrary_n to_o the_o former_a general_n of_o charity_n and_o prudence_n we_o shall_v then_o be_v prohibit_v both_o those_o out_o of_o prudence_n and_o charity_n to_o our_o neighbour_n both_o good_a and_o bad_a man_n and_o to_o ourselves_o too_o we_o be_v oblige_v to_o take_v notice_n of_o they_o what_o they_o be_v and_o do_v to_o encourage_v and_o help_v or_o to_o rejoice_v in_o what_o be_v good_a to_o check_v hinder_v and_o prevent_v what_o be_v bad_a and_o mischievous_a in_o the_o world_n by_o our_o pity_n and_o just_a endeavour_n we_o be_v not_o sure_o to_o say_v with_o cain_n be_o i_o my_o brother_n keeper_n yes_o we_o be_v all_o so_o that_o be_v we_o shall_v be_v so_o we_o be_v not_o like_a brute_n to_o live_v only_o within_o our_o own_o skin_n to_o care_v for_o no_o body_n but_o ourselves_o and_o inhuman_o to_o say_v what_o care_v we_o what_o other_o do_v we_o will_v look_v after_o ourselves_o let_v they_o be_v good_a or_o bad_a we_o matter_n not_o we_o think_v it_o best_o always_o to_o mind_n ourselves_o we_o see_v man_n busy_a themselves_o too_o much_o about_o other_o matter_n in_o the_o first_o of_o which_o thou_o be_v bad_a and_o wicked_a be_v only_o selfish_a in_o the_o other_o
