falsehood_n but_o here_o i_o must_v tell_v you_o that_o he_o mean_v not_o of_o that_o logic_n which_o be_v use_v now_o a_o day_n most_o in_o school_n stand_v for_o the_o most_o part_n upon_o brawling_n and_o contention_n and_o propound_v of_o frivolous_a question_n serve_v to_o nought_o else_o but_o subtlety_n and_o inextricable_a knot_n fit_a to_o nourish_v argument_n then_o to_o teach_v or_o explain_v the_o truth_n which_o abuse_n antisthenes_n mislike_v say_v it_o be_v meet_a to_o instruct_v he_o that_o contend_v then_o by_o contention_n to_o overcome_v he_o for_o logic_n be_v indeed_o the_o way_n and_o mean_a to_o instruct_v and_o teach_v and_o as_o before_o be_v say_v the_o proper_a instrument_n of_o science_n such_o as_o learn_v it_o only_o to_o contend_v forsake_v the_o right_a end_n and_o scope_n of_o that_o art_n and_o be_v as_o fruitless_a to_o their_o follower_n or_o scholar_n as_o mire_n be_v to_o the_o way_n fare_v man_n which_o beside_o the_o defile_n of_o his_o garment_n do_v oftentimes_o make_v he_o also_o to_o fall_v therefore_o plato_n in_o his_o time_n cry_v out_o upon_o the_o same_o judge_v it_o not_o without_o cause_n to_o be_v a_o mere_a folly_n that_o hinder_v the_o knowledge_n of_o truth_n and_o the_o learning_n of_o those_o thing_n which_o the_o sound_a and_o wise_a philosopher_n teach_v as_o well_o touch_v virtuous_a and_o civil_a action_n as_o natural_a and_o divine_a science_n from_o which_o this_o vain_a science_n put_v man_n astray_o so_o long_o as_o it_o teach_v only_o to_o argue_v and_o to_o contend_v whereby_o it_o come_v to_o pass_v that_o while_o they_o be_v more_o intentive_a to_o the_o word_n and_o circumstance_n then_o to_o the_o matter_n the_o more_o they_o strive_v to_o seem_v learned_a and_o subtle_a the_o less_o they_o show_v themselves_o to_o understand_v next_o to_o logic_n be_v rhetoric_n to_o be_v place_v or_o the_o art_n of_o oratory_n which_o leontinus_n do_v prefer_v before_o all_o other_o because_o it_o make_v itself_o lady_n over_o man_n mind_n not_o by_o force_n or_o violence_n but_o by_o their_o own_o consent_n and_o freewill_n and_o as_o zeno_n express_v the_o difference_n between_o these_o two_o art_n by_o resemble_v the_o former_a to_o his_o hand_n close_v and_o the_o latter_a to_o his_o hand_n stretch_v out_o so_o do_v rhetoric_n use_v argument_n with_o less_o force_n and_o efficacy_n than_o logic_n yet_o fetch_v they_o from_o logic_n as_o from_o a_o fountain_n or_o well_o head_n not_o to_o seek_v out_o the_o truth_n exact_o but_o only_o to_o persuade_v or_o dissuade_v with_o they_o that_o which_o he_o think_v most_o profitable_a for_o the_o speaker_n or_o the_o person_n for_o who_o he_o speak_v and_o of_o this_o art_n have_v all_o public_a and_o private_a action_n appertain_v to_o civil_a life_n need_v to_o persuade_v what_o be_v good_a and_o profitable_a and_o to_o dissuade_v what_o be_v hurtful_a or_o unprofitable_a to_o appease_v tumult_n and_o dissension_n to_o treat_v of_o league_n and_o peace_n to_o stir_v up_o the_o mind_n of_o man_n to_o the_o defence_n of_o their_o friend_n their_o parent_n their_o prince_n and_o country_n and_o their_o religion_n to_o search_v out_o and_o investigate_v the_o truth_n of_o all_o thing_n to_o assist_v the_o innocent_a and_o oppress_v in_o court_n of_o judgement_n to_o accuse_v the_o faulty_a and_o offender_n and_o final_o to_o give_v unto_o virtue_n her_o due_a praise_n and_o commendation_n and_o unto_o vice_n due_a blame_n and_o reproach_n by_o these_o mean_n and_o study_n which_o we_o have_v brief_o touch_v rather_o than_o perfect_o declare_v ought_v a_o young_a man_n to_o be_v frame_v to_o civil_a conversation_n and_o instruct_v with_o all_o carefulness_n that_o he_o may_v learn_v to_o bridle_v his_o concupiscible_a desire_n his_o angry_a and_o disordinate_a motion_n occasion_v by_o the_o sense_n and_o stir_v up_o by_o those_o two_o part_n of_o the_o mind_n which_o be_v rebellious_a and_o contrary_a to_o reason_n whereby_o he_o may_v give_v himself_o whole_o to_o honest_a and_o virtuous_a endeavour_n and_o because_o store_n of_o wealth_n oft_o time_n cause_v young_a man_n when_o they_o possess_v it_o to_o turn_v aside_o from_o virtue_n because_o riches_n be_v the_o nurse_n of_o wantonness_n in_o those_o year_n great_a regard_n be_v to_o be_v have_v that_o as_o the_o father_n so_o far_o as_o his_o state_n require_v be_v not_o to_o suffer_v his_o son_n to_o want_v any_o thing_n that_o be_v necessary_a for_o his_o call_n so_o must_v he_o take_v heed_n that_o he_o be_v not_o so_o feed_v with_o money_n as_o feed_v thereby_o his_o lust_n and_o sensual_a appetite_n he_o may_v abandon_v the_o good_a thought_n of_o virtue_n and_o receive_v in_o steed_n of_o they_o the_o seed_n of_o unruly_a and_o disorderly_a affection_n which_o of_o themselves_o be_v by_o nature_n in_o youth_n much_o more_o mighty_a than_o be_v fit_a and_o need_v not_o to_o be_v holpen_v by_o plenty_n of_o riches_n for_o to_o give_v a_o young_a man_n money_n at_o will_n to_o dispose_v as_o he_o list_v unless_o the_o father_n find_v as_o in_o some_o young_a man_n it_o happen_v that_o he_o have_v prevent_v his_o year_n with_o staidness_n and_o discretion_n be_v even_o as_o much_o as_o to_o put_v a_o sword_n into_o the_o hand_n of_o a_o furious_a or_o mad_a man_n by_o this_o the_o sun_n be_v so_o far_o decline_v towards_o our_o horizon_n as_o all_o the_o company_n think_v it_o time_n to_o depart_v that_o they_o may_v before_o sunset_a reach_n to_o the_o city_n wherefore_o sir_n robert_n dillon_n rise_v up_o say_v howsoever_o the_o lateness_n of_o the_o day_n call_v we_o away_o yet_o the_o desire_n to_o hear_v on_o further_a the_o discourse_n of_o so_o good_a a_o matter_n have_v draw_v we_o on_o in_o such_o sort_n as_o we_o have_v scarce_o perceive_v how_o the_o time_n be_v past_a and_o for_o your_o second_o feast_n you_o have_v right_a dainty_o and_o plenteous_o entertain_v us._n we_o must_v now_o expect_v the_o three_o which_o to_o morrow_n god_n will_v we_o will_v not_o fail_v to_o come_v and_o accept_v in_o hope_n that_o though_o we_o be_v cumbersome_a &_o troublesome_a unto_o you_o yet_o as_o well_o in_o regard_n of_o discharge_v your_o promise_n as_o of_o accomplish_v the_o desire_n of_o so_o many_o your_o friend_n you_o will_v not_o think_v it_o much_o to_o afford_v we_o your_o patience_n and_o your_o breath_n in_o deliver_v to_o we_o the_o substance_n of_o your_o author_n three_o dialogue_n of_o civil_a life_n by_o which_o we_o may_v learn_v as_o much_o as_o he_o have_v write_v of_o the_o ethic_a part_n of_o moral_a philosophy_n teach_v the_o ready_a way_n for_o every_o man_n in_o his_o private_a course_n of_o life_n to_o attain_v his_o felicity_n and_o that_o end_n of_o which_o all_o this_o discourse_n of_o you_o have_v have_v his_o beginning_n and_o so_o take_v their_o leave_n all_o together_o they_o depart_v the_o three_o day_n meeting_n and_o discourse_n of_o civil_a life_n i_o be_v not_o yet_o full_o apparel_v on_o the_o next_o morrow_n when_o look_v out_o of_o my_o window_n towards_o the_o city_n i_o may_v perceive_v the_o company_n all_o in_o a_o troop_n come_v together_o not_o as_o man_n walk_v soft_o to_o sport_n or_o desirous_a to_o refresh_v themselves_o with_o the_o morning_n dew_n and_o the_o sweet_a pleasant_a air_n that_o then_o invite_v all_o person_n to_o leave_v their_o sluggish_a nest_n but_o as_o man_n earnest_o bend_v to_o their_o journey_n and_o that_o have_v their_o head_n busy_v about_o some_o matter_n of_o great_a moment_n than_o their_o recreation_n i_o therefore_o haste_v to_o make_v i_o ready_a that_o they_o may_v not_o find_v i_o in_o case_n to_o be_v tax_v by_o they_o of_o drowsiness_n and_o be_v out_o of_o the_o door_n before_o they_o come_v to_o the_o house_n where_o salute_v they_o and_o they_o have_v courteous_o return_v the_o good_a morrow_n unto_o i_o the_o lord_n primate_n ask_v i_o whether_o that_o company_n make_v i_o not_o afraid_a to_o see_v they_o come_v in_o such_o sort_n upon_o i_o be_v but_o a_o poor_a farmer_n for_o though_o they_o come_v not_o arm_v like_o soldier_n to_o be_v cess_v upon_o i_o yet_o their_o purpose_n be_v to_o coynie_n upon_o i_o and_o to_o eat_v i_o out_o of_o house_n and_o home_n to_o who_o i_o answer_v that_o as_o long_o as_o i_o see_v counsellor_n in_o the_o company_n i_o need_v not_o fear_v that_o any_o such_o unlawful_a exaction_n as_o coynie_n shall_v be_v require_v at_o my_o hand_n for_o the_o law_n have_v sufficient_o provide_v for_o the_o abolish_n thereof_o and_o though_o i_o know_v that_o among_o the_o irishry_n it_o be_v not_o yet_o clean_o take_v away_o yet_o among_o such_o as_o be_v ameynable_a to_o law_n and_o civil_a it_o be_v not_o use_v or_o exact_v as_o for_o
no_o not_o to_o themselves_o alone_o which_o thing_n they_o shall_v the_o better_o perform_v if_o they_o use_v to_o forbear_v the_o do_v of_o any_o thing_n by_o themselves_o which_o they_o will_v be_v ashamed_a of_o if_o they_o be_v in_o company_n it_o be_v write_v that_o among_o the_o ancient_a roman_n one_o julius_n drusus_n publicola_n have_v his_o house_n seat_v so_o as_o his_o neighbour_n may_v look_v into_o it_o a_o certain_a architect_n offer_v he_o for_o the_o expense_n of_o five_o talent_n to_o make_v it_o so_o close_a as_o none_o of_o his_o neighbour_n shall_v look_v thereinto_o or_o see_v what_o he_o be_v do_v but_o he_o make_v he_o answer_v again_o that_o he_o will_v rather_o give_v he_o ten_o talent_n to_o make_v it_o so_o as_o all_o the_o city_n may_v see_v what_o he_o do_v in_o his_o house_n because_o he_o be_v sure_a he_o do_v nothing_o within_o door_n whereof_o he_o need_v be_v ashamed_a abroad_o though_o every_o man_n shall_v see_v he_o for_o which_o answer_n he_o be_v high_o commend_v true_a it_o be_v that_o xenophon_n esteem_v this_o blushng_n to_o a_o man_n self_n to_o be_v rather_o temperance_n than_o bashfulness_n but_o let_v it_o be_v name_v how_o it_o will_v it_o be_v sure_o the_o property_n of_o a_o gentle_a heart_n so_o to_o do_v and_o therefore_o petrarke_v say_v well_o alone_o whereas_o i_o walk_v mong_n wood_n and_o hill_n i_o shame_v at_o myself_o for_o gentle_a heart_n think_v that_o enough_o no_o other_o spur_n it_o will_v yet_o will_v i_o not_o neither_o that_o our_o young_a man_n shall_v be_v more_o bashful_a than_o be_v fit_a as_o one_o overawed_n or_o doltish_a not_o able_a to_o consider_v peril_n or_o danger_n when_o they_o present_v themselves_o not_o yet_o to_o loose_v his_o boldness_n of_o spirit_n for_o antipater_n the_o son_n of_o cassander_n through_o the_o like_a quality_n cast_v himself_o away_o who_o have_v invite_v demetrius_n to_o supper_n with_o he_o at_o such_o a_o time_n as_o their_o friendship_n be_v not_o sure_o but_o stand_v upon_o doubtful_a term_n and_o he_o be_v come_v according_o when_o demetrius_n afterward_o as_o in_o requital_n of_o his_o kindness_n invite_v antipater_n likewise_o to_o supper_n though_o he_o know_v right_o well_o what_o peril_n he_o thrust_v himself_o into_o if_o he_o go_v consider_v the_o wily_a disposition_n of_o the_o say_v demetrius_n yet_o be_v ashamed_a that_o demetrius_n shall_v perceive_v he_o to_o be_v so_o mistrustful_a will_v needs_o go_v and_o there_o be_v miserable_o slay_v this_o be_v a_o vice_n name_v in_o the_o greek_a disopia_n and_o which_o we_o may_v in_o english_a call_v unfruitful_a shamefastness_n wherewith_o we_o will_v not_o wish_v our_o young_a man_n shall_v be_v any_o way_n acquaint_v but_o only_o with_o that_o generous_a bashfulness_n that_o may_v serve_v he_o for_o a_o spur_n to_o virtue_n and_o for_o a_o bridle_n from_o vice_n but_o because_o plato_n say_v that_o though_o bashfulness_n be_v most_o proper_o fit_v for_o young_a man_n yet_o that_o it_o be_v also_o seemly_a enough_o for_o man_n of_o all_o year_n and_o that_o aristotle_n contrariwise_o think_v it_o not_o meet_v for_o man_n of_o ripe_a year_n to_o blush_v it_o may_v therefore_o be_v doubt_v to_o whether_o of_o these_o two_o great_a learned_a man_n opinion_n we_o shall_v incline_v for_o clear_n hereof_o you_o must_v understand_v that_o the_o platonike_n say_v two_o thing_n among_o other_o be_v special_o give_v to_o for_o a_o divine_a gift_n unto_o man_n bashfulness_n the_o one_o and_o magnanimity_n the_o other_o the_o one_o to_o hold_v we_o back_o from_o do_v of_o any_o thing_n worthy_a blame_n &_o reproach_n the_o other_o to_o put_v we_o forward_o into_o the_o way_n of_o praise_n and_o virtue_n whereby_o we_o may_v always_o be_v ready_a to_o do_v well_o only_o for_o virtue_n sake_n to_o the_o good_a and_o benefit_n of_o other_o and_o to_o our_o own_o contentment_n and_o delight_n of_o which_o course_n the_o end_n be_v honour_n in_o this_o world_n and_o glory_n after_o death_n but_o because_o the_o force_n of_o the_o concupiscible_a appetite_n be_v so_o great_a and_o set_v before_o we_o pleasure_n in_o so_o many_o sundry_a shape_n as_o it_o be_v hard_o to_o shun_v the_o snare_n which_o these_o two_o enemy_n of_o reason_n set_v to_o entrap_v we_o and_o that_o the_o coldness_n of_o old_a age_n can_v whole_o extinguish_v the_o fervour_n of_o our_o appetite_n for_o my_o part_n i_o think_v that_o as_o in_o all_o age_n it_o be_v fit_a that_o magnanimity_n invite_v we_o to_o commendable_a action_n so_o also_o that_o we_o have_v need_n of_o shamefastness_n to_o correct_v we_o whensoever_o we_o shall_v go_v beyond_o the_o bound_n or_o limit_n of_o reason_n in_o what_o year_n soever_o and_o to_o check_v we_o with_o the_o bridle_n of_o temperance_n for_o though_o aristotle_n say_v that_o shame_n ought_v to_o die_v red_a in_o a_o man_n cheek_n but_o for_o voluntary_a action_n only_o yet_o plato_n consider_v that_o none_o but_o god_n be_v perfect_a without_o fault_n and_o that_o every_o man_n even_o the_o most_o virtuous_a fall_v sometime_o through_o humane_a frailty_n think_v according_a to_o christianity_n that_o ripeness_n of_o year_n or_o wisdom_n shall_v be_v no_o hindrance_n to_o make_v they_o ashamed_a but_o rather_o make_v they_o the_o more_o bashful_a whensoever_o they_o shall_v find_v in_o themselves_o that_o they_o have_v run_v into_o any_o error_n undecent_a or_o unfitting_a for_o man_n of_o their_o year_n and_o quality_n not_o intend_v yet_o thereby_o that_o the_o error_n of_o the_o ancient_a man_n be_v to_o be_v of_o that_o sort_n that_o young_a man_n fault_n common_o be_v who_o through_o incontinency_n run_v oftentimes_o into_o sin_n wilful_o whereas_o man_n of_o ripe_a year_n err_v or_o aught_o to_o err_v only_o through_o frailty_n of_o nature_n much_o better_o be_v it_o indeed_o for_o man_n of_o year_n not_o to_o do_v any_o thing_n of_o which_o they_o may_v be_v ashamed_a if_o the_o condition_n of_o man_n will_v permit_v it_o then_o after_o they_o have_v do_v it_o to_o blush_v thereat_o and_o much_o more_o reproachful_a be_v his_o fault_n if_o he_o offend_v voluntary_o then_o the_o young_a man_n but_o since_o no_o man_n though_o he_o have_v make_v a_o habit_n in_o welldoing_a can_v stand_v so_o assure_v of_o himself_o but_o that_o sometime_o in_o his_o life_n he_o shall_v commit_v some_o error_n it_o be_v much_o better_a in_o what_o age_n soever_o it_o be_v that_o blush_a make_v he_o know_v his_o fault_n then_o to_o pass_v it_o over_o impudent_o without_o shame_n and_o according_o saint_n ambrose_n say_v in_o his_o book_n of_o office_n that_o shamefastness_n be_v meet_v for_o all_o age_n for_o all_o time_n and_o for_o all_o place_n and_o for_o the_o same_o cause_n perhaps_o have_v wise_a man_n and_o religious_a hold_v that_o a_o angel_n of_o heaven_n assist_v every_o man_n to_o call_v he_o back_o from_o those_o evil_n which_o the_o ill_a angel_n with_o his_o sugar_a bait_n of_o delight_n and_o disordinate_a appetite_n entice_v he_o unto_o only_o for_o his_o ruin_n for_o they_o think_v that_o our_o force_n be_v not_o able_a to_o resist_v so_o mighty_a provocation_n as_o for_o plato_n and_o aristotle_n seem_v they_o differ_v in_o opinion_n for_o that_o the_o one_o consider_v humane_a nature_n as_o it_o ought_v to_o be_v and_o the_o other_o as_o it_o common_o be_v indeed_o which_o may_v the_o better_o be_v believe_v because_o aristotle_n in_o his_o book_n of_o rhetoric_n restrain_v not_o this_o habit_n of_o shamefastness_n so_o precise_o to_o young_a man_n but_o that_o it_o may_v sometime_o beseem_v a_o age_a man_n cheek_n also_o though_o so_o far_o as_o grace_v and_o wisdom_n may_v prevail_v it_o will_v best_o beseem_v he_o never_o to_o do_v the_o thing_n whereof_o he_o need_v be_v ashamed_a as_o before_o be_v say_v and_o the_o same_o rule_n ought_v young_a man_n also_o to_o propose_v to_o themselves_o whereby_o they_o shall_v deserve_v so_o much_o the_o more_o commendation_n as_o the_o heat_n of_o their_o year_n bear_v with_o they_o fiery_a appetite_n and_o they_o the_o less_o apt_a to_o resist_v so_o sharp_a and_o so_o intolerable_a prick_v the_o way_n to_o observe_v that_o rule_n be_v to_o strive_v in_o all_o their_o action_n to_o master_n themselves_o and_o to_o profit_v in_o virtue_n whereunto_o will_v help_v they_o chief_o that_o they_o endeavour_n themselves_o to_o bridle_v such_o desire_n as_o they_o find_v most_o to_o molest_v they_o not_o suffer_v they_o to_o transport_v they_o beyond_o the_o limit_n of_o honesty_n but_o because_o the_o day_n go_v away_o and_o that_o to_o treat_v particular_o of_o all_o that_o may_v be_v say_v concern_v the_o direction_n of_o youth_n to_o virtue_n which_o lead_v he_o to_o his_o felicity_n will_v require_v more_o time_n than_o be_v
less_o wayward_a and_o cumbersome_a quiet_v the_o inward_a passion_n of_o the_o mind_n beside_o that_o such_o stir_v of_o they_o waken_v and_o kindle_v in_o they_o that_o natural_a heat_n which_o our_o common_a proverb_n that_o one_o swallow_n make_v not_o summer_n among_o young_a man_n there_o be_v some_o discreet_a sober_a quick_a of_o wit_n and_o ready_a of_o discourse_n who_o show_v themselves_o ripe_a of_o judgement_n before_o their_o year_n may_v seem_v to_o yield_v it_o they_o so_o be_v there_o among_o age_a man_n on_o the_o other_o side_n some_o of_o shallow_a wit_n and_o little_a
judgement_n of_o who_o the_o wise_a man_n of_o all_o age_n have_v esteem_v that_o to_o be_v old_a with_o a_o young_a man_n mind_n be_v all_o one_o as_o to_o be_v young_a in_o year_n for_o it_o be_v not_o grey_a hair_n or_o furrow_n in_o the_o face_n but_o prudence_n and_o wisdom_n that_o make_v man_n venerable_a when_o they_o be_v old_a neither_o can_v there_o be_v any_o thing_n more_o unseemly_a than_o a_o old_a man_n to_o live_v in_o such_o manner_n as_o if_o he_o begin_v but_o then_o to_o live_v which_o cause_v aristotle_n to_o say_v that_o it_o import_v little_a whether_o a_o man_n be_v young_a of_o year_n or_o of_o behaviour_n nevertheless_o because_o daily_a experience_n teach_v we_o that_o year_n common_o bring_v wisdom_n by_o reason_n of_o the_o variety_n of_o affair_n that_o have_v pass_v through_o old_a man_n hand_n and_o which_o they_o have_v see_v manage_v by_o other_o man_n and_o that_o common_o youth_n have_v need_n of_o a_o guide_n and_o director_n to_o take_v care_n of_o those_o thing_n which_o himself_o can_v see_v or_o discern_v therefore_o have_v law_n provide_v tutor_n for_o the_o age_n before_o mention_v until_o they_o have_v attain_v the_o year_n by_o they_o limit_v &_o thenceforth_o leave_v man_n to_o their_o own_o direction_n unless_o in_o some_o particular_a case_n accidental_a as_o when_o they_o be_v distraught_a of_o their_o wit_n or_o else_o through_o extreme_a old_a age_n they_o become_v child_n again_o as_o sometime_o it_o fall_v out_o knowledge_n then_o be_v the_o thing_n that_o make_v a_o man_n meet_v to_o govern_v himself_o and_o the_o same_o be_v attain_v but_o by_o long_a study_n and_o practice_v wise_a man_n have_v therefore_o conclude_v that_o youth_n can_v be_v prudent_a for_o indeed_o the_o variety_n of_o humane_a action_n by_o which_o from_o many_o particular_a accident_n a_o universal_a rule_n must_v be_v gather_v because_o as_o aristotle_n say_v the_o knowledge_n of_o universality_n spring_v from_o singularity_n make_v knowledge_n so_o hard_o to_o be_v get_v that_o many_o year_n be_v require_v thereunto_o and_o from_o this_o reason_n be_v it_o also_o conclude_v that_o humane_a felicity_n can_v be_v attain_v in_o young_a year_n since_o by_o the_o definition_n thereof_o it_o be_v a_o perfect_a operation_n according_a to_o virtue_n in_o a_o perfect_a life_n which_o perfection_n of_o life_n be_v not_o to_o be_v allow_v but_o to_o many_o year_n but_o the_o way_n unto_o it_o be_v make_v open_a by_o knowledge_n and_o special_o by_o the_o knowledge_n of_o a_o man_n self_n to_o which_o good_a education_n have_v prepare_v he_o and_o make_v he_o apt_a when_o he_o be_v come_v to_o ripe_a judgement_n by_o year_n he_o may_v the_o better_o make_v choice_n of_o that_o way_n which_o shall_v lead_v he_o to_o the_o same_o as_o the_o most_o perfect_a end_n and_o scope_n of_o all_o his_o action_n and_o this_o by_o consider_v well_o of_o his_o own_o nature_n which_o have_v annex_v unto_o it_o a_o spark_n of_o divinity_n he_o shall_v not_o only_o as_o a_o mere_a earthly_a creature_n but_o also_o as_o partaker_n of_o a_o more_o divine_a excellency_n raise_v himself_o &_o have_v perfect_a light_n to_o see_v the_o ready_a way_n which_o lead_v to_o felicity_n to_o this_o knowledge_n of_o himself_o so_o necessary_a for_o the_o purchase_n of_o humane_a felicity_n be_v philosophy_n a_o singular_a help_n as_o be_v call_v the_o science_n of_o truth_n the_o mother_n of_o science_n and_o the_o instructor_n of_o all_o thing_n appertain_v to_o happy_a life_n and_o therefore_o shall_v young_a man_n apply_v themselves_o to_o the_o study_n thereof_o with_o all_o carefulness_n that_o thereby_o they_o may_v refine_v their_o mind_n and_o their_o judgement_n and_o find_v the_o knowledge_n of_o his_o wellnigh_o divine_a nature_n so_o much_o the_o more_o easy_o and_o as_o this_o knowledge_n be_v of_o all_o other_o thing_n most_o proper_o appertain_v to_o humane_a wisdom_n so_o be_v the_o neglect_v thereof_o the_o great_a and_o most_o harmful_a folly_n of_o all_o other_o for_o from_o the_o say_a knowledge_n as_o from_o a_o fountain_n or_o well_o head_n spring_v all_o virtue_n and_o goodness_n even_o as_o from_o the_o ignorance_n thereof_o slow_a all_o vice_n and_o evil_n that_o be_v among_o man_n but_o herein_o be_v one_o special_a regard_n to_o be_v have_v which_o be_v that_o self_n love_v carry_v not_o away_o the_o mind_n from_o the_o direct_a path_n to_o the_o same_o for_o which_o cause_n plato_n affirm_v that_o man_n ought_v earnest_o to_o pray_v to_o god_n that_o in_o seek_v their_o scholar_n in_o philosophy_n if_o they_o have_v not_o first_o learn_v to_o know_v themselves_o as_o if_o they_o have_v conclude_v that_o such_o knowledge_n come_v not_o from_o philosophy_n but_o appertain_v to_o some_o other_o skill_n or_o science_n their_o opinion_n say_v i_o differ_v not_o as_o my_o author_n think_v from_o the_o opinion_n of_o the_o wise_a man_n of_o greece_n but_o that_o the_o say_v brachmani_n herein_o show_v the_o self_n same_o thing_n that_o aristotle_n teach_v which_o be_v that_o a_o man_n ought_v to_o make_v some_o trial_n of_o himself_o before_o he_o determinate_a to_o follow_v any_o discipline_n that_o he_o may_v discern_v and_o judge_v whether_o there_o be_v in_o he_o any_o disposition_n whereby_o he_o may_v be_v apt_a to_o learn_v the_o same_o or_o no._n and_o to_o the_o same_o effect_n in_o another_o place_n he_o affirm_v that_o there_o must_v be_v a_o custom_n of_o welldoing_a in_o they_o that_o will_v learn_v to_o be_v virtuous_a which_o may_v frame_v in_o they_o a_o aptness_n to_o learn_v by_o make_v they_o love_v what_o be_v honest_a and_o commendable_a and_o to_o hate_v those_o thing_n that_o be_v dishonest_a and_o reproachful_a for_o all_o man_n be_v not_o apt_a for_o all_o thing_n neither_o be_v it_o enough_o that_o the_o teacher_n be_v ready_a to_o instruct_v and_o skilful_a but_o the_o learner_n must_v also_o be_v apt_a of_o nature_n to_o apprehend_v and_o conceive_v the_o instruction_n that_o shall_v be_v give_v unto_o he_o and_o this_o knowledge_n of_o himself_o be_v fit_a for_o every_o man_n to_o have_v before_o he_o undertake_v the_o study_n of_o philosophy_n to_o wit_n that_o he_o enter_v into_o himself_o to_o try_v whether_o he_o can_v well_o frame_v himself_o to_o endure_v the_o discipline_n of_o this_o mother_n of_o science_n and_o the_o patience_n which_o be_v require_v in_o all_o those_o thing_n beside_o which_o appertain_v to_o honesty_n and_o virtuous_a life_n for_o he_o that_o will_v learn_v virtue_n in_o the_o school_n of_o philosophy_n must_v not_o bring_v a_o mind_n corrupt_v with_o false_a opinion_n vice_n wickedness_n disordinate_a appetite_n ambition_n greedy_a desire_n of_o epictetus_n say_v very_o well_o that_o they_o which_o be_v willing_a to_o study_v philosophy_n ought_v first_o to_o consider_v well_o whether_o their_o vessel_n be_v clean_o and_o sweet_a lest_o it_o shall_v corrupt_v that_o which_o they_o mean_v to_o put_v into_o it_o declare_v thereby_o withal_o that_o learn_v put_v into_o a_o vicious_a mind_n be_v dangerous_a but_o this_o manner_n of_o know_v a_o man_n self_n be_v not_o that_o which_o i_o speak_v of_o before_o though_o it_o be_v that_o which_o the_o say_a indian_a philosopher_n mean_v and_o be_v also_o very_o necessary_a and_o profitable_a for_o to_o know_v a_o man_n self_n perfect_o according_a to_o the_o former_a manner_n be_v a_o matter_n of_o great_a importance_n than_o so_o which_o make_v thales_n when_o he_o be_v ask_v what_o be_v our_o body_n which_o represent_v itself_o unto_o our_o eye_n though_o even_o therein_o also_o may_v well_o be_v discern_v the_o marvelous_a and_o artificial_a handiwork_n of_o god_n divine_a majesty_n but_o penetrate_v to_o the_o examination_n of_o the_o true_a inward_a man_n which_o be_v the_o intellectual_a soul_n to_o which_o this_o body_n be_v give_v but_o for_o a_o instrument_n here_o in_o this_o life_n and_o this_o knowledge_n be_v of_o so_o great_a importance_n that_o man_n guide_v by_o the_o light_n of_o
