god_n some_o solemn_a worship_n but_o we_o say_v though_o this_o seem_v a_o fair_a assertion_n and_o suitable_a to_o what_o we_o have_v before_o of_o the_o natural_a continuance_n of_o a_o day_n yet_o if_o we_o shall_v speak_v practical_o and_o ethical_o as_o we_o do_v partly_o before_o of_o the_o continuance_n we_o must_v deliver_v ourselves_o somewhat_o otherwise_o and_o indeed_o so_o we_o must_v merum_fw-la nonens_a with_o it_o we_o have_v nothing_o to_o do_v in_o this_o question_n because_o we_o can_v know_v all_o that_o be_v then_o write_v in_o man_n heart_n but_o will_v we_o will_v we_o our_o present_a nature_n though_o corrupt_v must_v be_v the_o judge_n according_a to_o the_o light_n it_o have_v still_o leave_v reject_v xvii_o 2._o another_o reject_v which_o law_n be_v absolute_o necessary_a for_o all_o man_n and_o so_o which_o be_v law_n of_o nature_n 2._o other_o and_o perhaps_o the_o same_o man_n at_o
god_n but_o these_o be_v still_o but_o accidental_a consideration_n as_o we_o say_v before_o and_o not_o have_v that_o direct_a and_o substantial_a influence_n into_o religion_n that_o the_o continuance_n and_o frequency_n of_o time_n determine_v have_v and_o namely_o that_o the_o continuance_n of_o a_o whole_a day_n in_o the_o frequent_a revolution_n of_o a_o week_n of_o seven_o day_n have_v which_o we_o say_v be_v together_o in_o time_n determine_v gen._n 2.3_o with_o that_o seven_o day_n in_o order_n for_o the_o quando_fw-la or_o particular_a day_n for_o that_o world_n but_o before_o it_o in_o nature_n the_o particular_a day_n that_o seven_o be_v in_o nature_n after_o one_o of_o seven_o and_o undoubted_o one_o day_n of_o seven_o be_v determine_v in_o the_o four_o commandment_n and_o we_o say_v that_o and_o no_o more_o direct_o and_o substantial_o command_v and_o determine_v there_o and_o hope_v to_o prove_v it_o sufficient_o in_o due_a place_n &_o time_n as_o be_v of_o substantial_a importance_n to_o religion_n and_o the_o worship_n of_o god_n which_o god_n then_o give_v out_o his_o commandment_n to_o settle_v the_o substantial_o of_o perpetual_a n._n b._n all_o other_o commandment_n of_o the_o decalogue_n be_v whole_o substantial_a and_o so_o perpetual_a the_o four_o then_o be_v substantial_a for_o one_o day_n in_o seven_o for_o religion_n this_o may_v conclude_v that_o to_o be_v the_o whole_a substance_n of_o the_o commandment_n and_o not_o that_o particular_a seven_o day_n which_o have_v no_o substantiality_n in_o it_o and_o then_o that_o one_o day_n in_o seven_o be_v likewise_o perpetual_a as_o appear_v by_o all_o the_o other_o commandment_n of_o the_o first_o table_n &_o by_o all_o the_o commandment_n of_o the_o second_o table_n be_v substantial_o of_o duty_n to_o man._n and_o that_o the_o 7_o day_n sabbath_n though_o then_o in_o force_n be_v not_o at_o all_o direct_o command_v there_o nor_o as_o any_o part_n of_o the_o substance_n of_o it_o as_o be_v not_o of_o any_o substantiality_n towards_o religion_n more_o than_o any_o other_o day_n of_o the_o seven_o will_v then_o have_v be_v if_o then_o command_v by_o god_n nature_n of_o the_o respect_n of_o time_n towards_o religion_n as_o before_o towards_o study_n for_o learning_n or_o any_o other_o civil_a business_n that_o the_o quando_fw-la season_n or_o order_n of_o beginning_n viz._n this_o or_o that_o particular_a day_n first_o or_o last_o of_o seven_o or_o of_o any_o other_o number_n have_v no_o materiality_n or_o substantiality_n in_o it_o towards_o religion_n to_o make_v it_o be_v profitable_o determine_v rather_o than_o such_o another_o of_o such_o a_o number_n but_o only_o accidental_o and_o so_o in_o this_o consideration_n to_o be_v great_o inferior_a to_o the_o quamdiu_fw-la or_o continuance_n as_o also_o to_o the_o quoties_fw-la or_o frequency_n of_o revolution_n which_o be_v so_o main_o profitable_a as_o we_o show_v before_o 3._o whence_o it_o follow_v clear_o as_o be_v also_o say_v before_o in_o relation_n to_o learning_n that_o whereas_o a_o determination_n of_o the_o continuance_n and_o frequency_n of_o time_n for_o religion_n religion_n xxiii_o therefore_o there_o may_v be_v a_o alteration_n of_o it_o without_o hurt_n to_o religion_n whether_o of_o either_o of_o they_o single_o or_o both_o of_o they_o joint_o can_v be_v alter_v in_o any_o remarkable_a degree_n without_o a_o answerable_a alteration_n in_o the_o profit_n of_o it_o towards_o religion_n namely_o the_o profit_n must_v needs_o be_v great_a if_o it_o be_v alter_v from_o a_o less_o proportion_n to_o a_o great_a as_o from_o half_a a_o day_n to_o a_o whole_a day_n continuance_n and_o from_o the_o frequency_n of_o one_o day_n in_o seven_o to_o hour_n only_o of_o a_o day_n and_o from_o the_o frequency_n of_o one_o day_n in_o seven_o to_o one_o in_o eight_o or_o ten_o only_a and_o consequent_o a_o determination_n of_o these_o respect_n of_o time_n remain_v in_o the_o nature_n of_o it_o constant_o &_o perpetual_o profitable_a to_o religion_n it_o be_v quite_o otherwise_o with_o the_o season_n or_o order_n of_o time_n for_o religion_n for_o of_o that_o there_o may_v be_v a_o remarkable_a alteration_n as_o from_o the_o last_o day_n of_o seven_o to_o the_o first_o of_o seven_o from_o evening_n to_o morning_n begin_v morning_n it_o be_v ususual_o take_v for_o grant_v that_o the_o sabbath_n of_o old_a begin_v in_o the_o evening_n this_o we_o do_v not_o affirm_v nor_o yet_o altogether_o deny_v but_o shall_v consider_v it_o hereafter_o but_o now_o we_o speak_v of_o it_o by_o way_n of_o supposition_n that_o it_o use_v so_o begin_v or_o the_o like_a and_o yet_o no_o alteration_n at_o all_o unless_o in_o some_o accidental_a change_v the_o season_n or_o order_n of_o beginning_n from_o one_o day_n of_o the_o week_n to_o another_o or_o from_o evening_n to_o morning_n hereafter_o morning_n whereas_o we_o say_v it_o make_v no_o substantial_a change_n in_o the_o profit_n to_o alter_v the_o beginning_n from_o evening_n to_o morning_n we_o yet_o conceive_v a_o accidental_a profit_n by_o it_o in_o that_o by_o the_o mean_n of_o the_o begin_n in_o the_o morning_n we_o be_v sure_a to_o have_v the_o continuance_n if_o for_o a_o whole_a day_n not_o to_o be_v end_v while_o we_o be_v awake_a the_o profit_n of_o which_o we_o shall_v argue_v hereafter_o but_o that_o if_o no_o accidental_a consideration_n recommend_v a_o change_n that_o season_n or_o order_n of_o beginning_n may_v be_v perpetuate_v under_o the_o new_a testament_n which_o be_v under_o the_o old_a without_o prejudice_n to_o religion_n and_o if_o any_o accidental_a consideration_n do_v recommend_v a_o change_n that_o season_n or_o order_n of_o rather_o than_o another_o and_o then_o that_o for_o that_o cause_n be_v fit_a to_o be_v choose_v and_o determine_v according_o and_o these_o thing_n we_o affirm_v of_o the_o alteration_n of_o the_o season_n or_o order_n of_o beginning_n under_o the_o old_a testament_n from_o the_o last_o day_n of_o the_o week_n to_o the_o first_o day_n of_o the_o week_n and_o from_o beginning_n in_o the_o anti-sabbatarians_a doe_n that_o god_n have_v put_v over_o this_o authority_n to_o the_o church_n not_o only_o from_o the_o type_n annex_v to_o the_o old_a day_n but_o from_o a_o great_a benefit_n then_o that_o which_o the_o old_a day_n be_v a_o memorial_n of_o namely_o the_o redemption_n of_o the_o world_n be_v above_o the_o creation_n and_o this_o redemption_n complete_v in_o the_o morning_n of_o the_o resurrection_n day_n while_o withal_o
day_n as_o their_o natural_a spirit_n can_v hold_v out_o unto_o as_o they_o be_v able_a to_o continue_v wake_v in_o the_o service_n of_o god_n but_o it_o do_v not_o bind_v all_o then_o equal_o to_o the_o same_o proportion_n of_o minute_n because_o all_o be_v not_o able_a to_o wake_v equal_o one_o as_o long_o as_o a_o other_o but_o so_o far_o as_o man_n be_v able_a it_o bind_v all_o equal_o all_o be_v bind_v to_o serve_v god_n in_o the_o day_n with_o all_o their_o strength_n the_o strength_n of_o all_o their_o natural_a ability_n and_o so_o much_o we_o shall_v present_o see_v the_o law_n of_o nature_n command_v every_o one_o of_o mankind_n and_o more_o than_o so_o much_o it_o do_v not_o command_v whether_o the_o continuance_n be_v long_o or_o short_a compare_v with_o other_o 2._o xxiv_o answ_n 2._o 2._o but_o with_o all_o we_o say_v if_o any_o one_o of_o mankind_n through_o neglect_n of_o the_o service_n of_o god_n or_o misse-devotion_n to_o it_o do_v willing_o sleep_v more_o and_o wake_v less_o time_n than_o he_o need_v to_o do_v whether_o again_o the_o continuance_n compare_v with_o other_o man_n be_v long_o or_o short_a he_o be_v and_o will_v be_v find_v a_o transgressor_n against_o this_o law_n of_o nature_n for_o this_o be_v but_o corruption_n in_o he_o though_o perhaps_o he_o may_v pretend_v natural_a infirmity_n but_o of_o that_o and_o all_o other_o such_o like_a pretence_n this_o rule_n in_o a_o word_n may_v be_v a_o certain_a and_o sufficient_a judge_n that_o what_o continuance_n soever_o a_o man_n be_v able_a to_o keep_v himself_o wake_v in_o a_o day_n about_o any_o worldly_a business_n or_o matter_n of_o pleasure_n game_a or_o the_o like_a he_o be_v able_a to_o keep_v himself_o according_a to_o nature_n the_o same_o continuance_n of_o time_n in_o the_o service_n of_o god_n in_o one_o or_o other_o exercise_n of_o religion_n which_o natural_o weary_a not_o the_o spirit_n more_o than_o worldly_a matter_n but_o rather_o less_o than_o many_o worldly_a matter_n and_o the_o variety_n may_v refresh_v and_o do_v great_o the_o mind_n so_o far_o as_o carnality_n and_o corruption_n oversway_v not_o and_o therefore_o in_o the_o first_o state_v of_o this_o position_n concern_v a_o day_n to_o be_v determine_v by_o the_o law_n of_o nature_n we_o distinguish_v natural_a ability_n from_o corruption_n for_o we_o take_v it_o for_o a_o most_o undeniable_a truth_n that_o corruption_n do_v not_o hinder_v the_o law_n of_o nature_n from_o command_v to_o the_o utmost_a of_o natural_a ability_n as_o long_o at_o least_o as_o it_o exceed_v not_o they_o for_o the_o love_a and_o so_o serve_v god_n withal_o our_o strength_n as_o be_v touch_v before_o be_v infallible_o of_o the_o law_n of_o nature_n and_o yet_o no_o man_n corruption_n now_o suffer_v he_o to_o yield_v god_n so_o much_o love_n and_o service_n this_o also_o make_v be_v make_v good_a in_o manifold_a particular_a instance_n that_o the_o law_n of_o nature_n do_v command_v we_o at_o least_o in_o his_o life_n but_o it_o be_v sin_n against_o the_o law_n of_o nature_n never_o to_o god_n a_o whole_a day_n at_o once_o ergo_fw-la the_o consequence_n be_v undeniable_a the_o antecedent_n be_v thus_o further_o make_v good_a that_o which_o be_v contrary_a to_o the_o acknowledgement_n of_o god_n be_v the_o lord_n of_o we_o and_o all_o our_o time_n and_o god_n be_v our_o happiness_n be_v a_o sin_n against_o the_o law_n of_o nature_n but_o never_o in_o a_o man_n life_n to_o give_v god_n a_o whole_a day_n at_o once_o be_v contrary_a to_o those_o acknowledgement_n as_o nature_n can_v possible_o determine_v and_o possible_o give_v at_o once_o where_o all_o that_o a_o man_n have_v be_v due_a that_o debt_n can_v be_v satisfy_v unless_o all_o be_v tender_v to_o he_o so_o unless_o all_o the_o continuance_n of_o a_o day_n be_v tender_v to_o god_n he_o have_v not_o all_o that_o be_v due_a to_o he_o as_o lord_n of_o all_o our_o time_n also_o where_o a_o man_n acknowledge_v his_o whole_a happiness_n to_o lie_v that_o can_v but_o carry_v he_o with_o the_o whole_a of_o his_o strength_n to_o the_o utmost_a continuance_n nature_n have_v to_o give_v for_o all_o that_o a_o man_n do_v be_v towards_o his_o happiness_n and_o nothing_o can_v draw_v his_o mind_n from_o it_o while_o his_o acknowledgement_n of_o it_o fail_v not_o now_o we_o have_v already_o show_v that_o nature_n can_v and_o do_v determine_v such_o a_o day_n to_o every_o man_n for_o business_n of_o what_o kind_n soever_o and_o that_o it_o can_v give_v it_o whole_o to_o god_n employ_v it_o whole_o in_o the_o service_n of_o god_n take_v in_o special_o the_o reservation_n of_o any_o necessary_a refresh_n which_o nature_n and_o not_o corruption_n call_v for_o god_n allow_v and_o any_o extraordinary_a other_o necessary_a interruption_n as_o we_o have_v former_o say_v therefore_o never_o throughout_o a_o man_n life_n to_o give_v god_n that_o which_o nature_n be_v so_o able_a to_o give_v he_o be_v against_o those_o acknowledgement_n of_o god_n sovereignty_n and_o his_o be_v our_o happiness_n and_o so_o a_o sin_n against_o the_o law_n of_o nature_n answer_v xxvi_o a_o objection_n answer_v if_o here_o it_o be_v object_v that_o the_o same_o argument_n will_v as_o well_o prove_v the_o whole_a continuance_n of_o every_o day_n of_o our_o life_n as_o of_o one_o day_n which_o yet_o it_o do_v not_o do_v nor_o can_v because_o our_o natural_a necessity_n allow_v by_o god_n and_o even_o command_v by_o the_o law_n of_o nature_n as_o it_o concern_v the_o second_o table_n duty_n admit_v it_o not_o and_o therefore_o the_o argument_n be_v either_o false_a or_o impertinent_a or_o both_o we_o answer_v that_o the_o objection_n furnish_v we_o with_o sufficient_a justification_n of_o the_o argument_n both_o truth_n and_o pertinencie_n for_o we_o grant_v according_a to_o the_o objection_n that_o god_n in_o the_o law_n of_o nature_n command_v to_o attend_v necessary_a worldly_a business_n as_o well_o we_o say_v not_o as_o much_o that_o be_v as_o absolute_o necessary_o as_o his_o service_n and_o the_o pursue_v immediate_o of_o the_o soul_n happiness_n in_o and_o by_o they_o therefore_o in_o sensu_fw-la composito_fw-la it_o be_v not_o true_a that_o the_o argument_n prove_v the_o whole_a of_o every_o day_n continuance_n to_o be_v determine_v by_o the_o law_n of_o nature_n for_o religion_n and_o god_n immediate_a worship_n although_o in_o sensu_fw-la diviso_fw-la it_o prove_v of_o every_o particular_a day_n that_o be_v this_o or_o that_o quando_fw-la as_o well_o as_o of_o one_o but_o we_o propound_v it_o not_o of_o any_o particular_a day_n in_o respect_n of_o the_o quando_fw-la or_o season_n this_o or_o that_o day_n but_o only_o of_o one_o single_a continuance_n of_o a_o day_n and_o so_o it_o be_v both_o true_a and_o pertinent_a it_o be_v true_a for_o though_o natural_a necessity_n of_o worldly_a business_n will_v not_o admit_v the_o whole_a continuance_n of_o every_o day_n one_o after_o another_o that_o be_v the_o quoties_fw-la or_o revolution_n join_v to_o the_o continuance_n which_o we_o meddle_v not_o with_o in_o the_o argument_n yet_o they_o will_v certain_o admit_v one_o day_n in_o a_o man_n life_n we_o mean_v ordinary_a business_n will_v and_o for_o extraordinary_a necessity_n we_o grant_v as_o before_o reservation_n for_o they_o if_o they_o shall_v fall_v out_o when_o a_o man_n be_v upon_o that_o one_o day_n devotion_n therefore_o
still_o nature_n can_v give_v such_o a_o day_n and_o therefore_o again_o we_o say_v it_o be_v true_a that_o the_o law_n of_o nature_n do_v determine_v it_o and_o as_o for_o the_o pertinencie_n of_o this_o discourse_n we_o shall_v show_v it_o by_o and_o by_o a_o second_o objection_n may_v be_v make_v namely_o answer_v xxvii_o another_o objection_n answer_v that_o what_o be_v necessary_a by_o the_o law_n of_o nature_n be_v always_o and_o certain_o so_o but_o so_o be_v not_o this_o because_o for_o any_o thing_n the_o light_n of_o nature_n can_v see_v or_o say_v god_n may_v have_v declare_v that_o he_o will_v not_o have_v a_o whole_a day_n at_o any_o time_n at_o once_o and_o then_o the_o argument_n will_v overthrow_v itself_o he_o be_v the_o sovereign_a lord_n of_o in_o and_o all_o our_o time_n but_o to_o this_o we_o answer_v two_o thing_n 1._o that_o we_o have_v in_o part_n already_o prevent_v this_o objection_n because_o before_o we_o propound_v this_o question_n of_o our_o judge_n of_o the_o law_n of_o nature_n determine_v a_o continuance_n of_o time_n conclusive_o for_o religion_n we_o propound_v it_o under_o the_o favour_n of_o god_n allowance_n of_o it_o even_o because_o all_o time_n be_v he_o and_o he_o have_v no_o need_n of_o any_o service_n of_o we_o therefore_o the_o argument_n be_v intend_v but_o so_o far_o forth_o as_o god_n have_v not_o refuse_v a_o whole_a day_n continuance_n at_o once_o to_o be_v tender_v to_o he_o in_o solemn_a worship_n 2._o we_o add_v that_o unless_o we_o have_v such_o a_o express_a refusal_n in_o scripture_n we_o can_v conceive_v acknowledge_v a_o sufficient_a time_n to_o be_v necessary_a to_o religion_n they_o allot_v such_o a_o miserable_a insufficient_a parcel_n to_o it_o and_o there_o be_v no_o reason_n to_o expect_v it_o will_v be_v any_o better_o order_v while_o man_n corrupt_a nature_n have_v no_o better_a counselor_n than_o the_o body_n and_o worldly_a occasion_n under_o the_o name_n of_o necessity_n to_o help_v to_o divide_v and_o distribute_v the_o proportion_n of_o his_o time_n for_o religion_n 2._o this_o the_o rather_o because_o the_o business_n of_o the_o body_n and_o of_o the_o world_n towards_o the_o bodily_a life_n be_v so_o numerous_a and_o various_a and_o uncertain_a run_v round_o throughout_o the_o whole_a year_n as_o be_v say_v of_o a_o husbandman_n work_n that_o it_o be_v never_o do_v and_o so_o it_o be_v with_o all_o worldly_a business_n in_o one_o regard_n or_o other_o and_o capable_a also_o of_o engross_a the_o whole_a of_o every_o day_n which_o be_v most_o apparent_a in_o servant_n and_o those_o that_o spend_v their_o time_n chief_o at_o the_o pleasure_n of_o other_o man_n so_o that_o there_o be_v no_o possibility_n of_o conclude_v before_o hand_n with_o respect_n to_o worldly_a business_n i_o may_v certain_o spare_v for_o religion_n so_o many_o day_n of_o a_o year_n or_o of_o a_o month_n or_o week_n or_o so_o many_o hour_n of_o a_o week_n or_o day_n because_o i_o shall_v have_v nothing_o to_o do_v about_o worldly_a affair_n but_o may_v be_v free_a to_o attend_v on_o god_n we_o say_v this_o can_v never_o be_v say_v in_o reference_n to_o all_o mankind_n of_o who_o our_o dispute_n now_o be_v and_o so_o we_o shall_v have_v most_o wild_a determination_n if_o man_n take_v their_o aim_n only_o or_o chief_o from_o the_o consideration_n of_o bodily_a and_o worldly_a
