because_o they_o prize_v their_o favour_n more_o than_o any_o man_n favour_n in_o the_o world_n and_o after_o this_o manner_n restrain_v it_o be_v a_o good_a conscience_n but_o if_o it_o restrain_v we_o as_o a_o servant_n be_v restrain_v under_o a_o hard_a master_n or_o as_o a_o thief_n under_o the_o judge_n tremble_v at_o his_o word_n at_o his_o judgement_n this_o be_v not_o a_o good_a conscience_n your_o conscience_n may_v restrain_v you_o from_o many_o thing_n nay_o you_o may_v do_v many_o thing_n in_o secret_a between_o you_o and_o god_n alone_o and_o yet_o for_o all_o this_o have_v no_o good_a but_o a_o evil_a conscience_n so_o you_o see_v the_o corruption_n of_o man_n in_o the_o understanding_n will_n memory_n and_o conscience_n i_o will_v add_v another_o and_o that_o be_v the_o sensual_a appetite_n appetite_n and_o this_o you_o shall_v find_v exceed_o out_o of_o order_n above_o all_o these_o faculty_n i_o have_v name_v it_o be_v ready_a to_o run_v over_o and_o beyond_o all_o measure_n by_o this_o i_o understand_v that_o appetite_n in_o a_o man_n by_o which_o he_o take_v pleasure_n in_o sensible_a thing_n such_o as_o be_v convey_v by_o the_o eye_n the_o ear_n or_o the_o taste_n set_v any_o object_n before_o it_o it_o be_v ready_a to_o run_v out_o quick_o by_o inordinate_a affection_n as_o to_o woman_n to_o meat_n and_o drink_n to_o any_o kind_n of_o sport_n or_o recreation_n or_o sensible_a thing_n how_o corrupt_a be_v this_o sensual_a appetite_n how_o prone_a to_o evil_a how_o ready_a to_o run_v out_o to_o break_v over_o the_o pale_a to_o go_v aside_o the_o rule_n if_o any_o delightful_a object_n be_v propound_v how_o ready_a be_v it_o to_o embrace_v it_o object_n but_o you_o will_v say_v and_o indeed_o it_o be_v bellarmine_n quarrel_v the_o rebellion_n of_o the_o sensual_a appetite_n be_v but_o natural_a the_o same_o that_o be_v in_o beast_n because_o before_o original_a sin_n be_v commit_v he_o be_v in_o the_o same_o constitution_n there_o be_v such_o rebellion_n between_o the_o sensual_a appetite_n and_o reason_n as_o there_o be_v now_o and_o therefore_o be_v natural_a it_o be_v not_o sinful_a but_o this_o be_v his_o error_n though_o every_o man_n be_v hereby_o ready_a to_o excuse_v himself_o answ._n think_v the_o rebellion_n of_o the_o sensual_a appetite_n not_o to_o be_v so_o great_a a_o matter_n but_o take_v a_o horse_n in_o a_o pasture_n that_o be_v loose_a and_o free_a if_o he_o run_v up_o and_o down_o and_o play_v we_o find_v no_o fault_n with_o he_o for_o he_o be_v loose_a but_o if_o he_o do_v this_o under_o the_o bridle_n when_o the_o rider_n be_v on_o his_o back_n will_v you_o not_o now_o reckon_v he_o a_o stiffnecked_a horse_n and_o count_v it_o a_o fault_n in_o he_o for_o there_o be_v a_o rider_n on_o his_o back_n so_o for_o this_o sensual_a appetite_n in_o beast_n where_o there_o be_v liberty_n and_o no_o superior_a command_n to_o keep_v they_o in_o order_n the_o beast_n be_v not_o to_o be_v blame_v but_o take_v a_o man_n where_o god_n have_v set_v reason_n above_o the_o sensual_a appetite_n and_o grace_n above_o reason_n to_o guide_v it_o in_o he_o this_o sensual_a appetite_n rebel_v against_o reason_n which_o it_o shall_v obey_v and_o this_o show_v it_o to_o be_v a_o great_a sin_n in_o man_n consider_v that_o reason_n shall_v be_v the_o rule_n to_o guide_v and_o keep_v in_o the_o sensual_a appetite_n for_o god_n have_v giuâ—n_v it_o for_o that_o purpose_n indeed_o some_o desire_n be_v natural_a christ_n desire_v life_n which_o be_v lawful_a and_o a_o right_a object_n of_o desire_n but_o take_v this_o withal_o it_o be_v perfect_o subjugate_v and_o bring_v under_o and_o make_v obedient_a to_o the_o will_n of_o god_n as_o his_o will_n be_v holy_a and_o sanctify_a so_o we_o may_v desire_v meat_n and_o drink_n but_o many_o time_n the_o law_n of_o god_n may_v forbid_v it_o as_o in_o many_o case_n it_o do_v for_o it_o may_v differ_v from_o the_o will_n of_o god_n as_o it_o be_v holy_a and_o yet_o in_o itself_o it_o may_v be_v right_a here_o be_v no_o more_o but_o subordination_n require_v but_o when_o this_o run_v out_o amiss_o affect_v of_o thing_n inordinate_o though_o you_o do_v suppress_v it_o yet_o that_o affection_n be_v sinful_a and_o you_o must_v be_v humble_v for_o it_o god_n see_v it_o in_o you_o and_o it_o be_v hateful_a and_o with_o they_o answ._n for_o answer_v to_o this_o you_o must_v know_v that_o the_o have_v of_o this_o truth_n the_o bestow_n of_o any_o of_o these_o common_a grace_n put_v no_o man_n into_o a_o better_a condition_n it_o be_v god_n work_n and_o put_v upon_o his_o reckon_n only_o indeed_o the_o use_v or_o abuse_v of_o they_o be_v his_o own_o work_n and_o put_v upon_o his_o own_o reckon_n and_o therefore_o in_o regard_n he_o may_v abuse_v they_o they_o may_v do_v he_o hurt_v and_o those_o that_o have_v much_o of_o these_o truth_n but_o use_v they_o not_o or_o that_o if_o they_o do_v use_v some_o of_o they_o yet_o do_v it_o for_o their_o own_o end_n and_o not_o simple_o for_o god_n glory_n be_v as_o abominable_a to_o god_n as_o those_o that_o run_v into_o the_o great_a outrage_n man_n that_o be_v more_o civil_a be_v like_o wolf_n tie_v up_o other_o be_v like_o wolf_n at_o liberty_n it_o be_v true_a other_o man_n do_v more_o mischief_n that_o be_v they_o commit_v more_o sinful_a action_n and_o consequent_o run_v into_o more_o guilt_n and_o their_o condemnation_n shall_v be_v great_a but_o those_o that_o be_v tie_v up_o that_o by_o civility_n have_v their_o lust_n restrain_v be_v no_o less_o abominable_a in_o god_n sight_n than_o other_o a_o wolf_n tie_v up_o be_v as_o hateful_a to_o a_o sheep_n as_o one_o that_o be_v at_o large_a and_o so_o it_o be_v with_o these_o man_n for_o it_o be_v the_o condition_n of_o the_o best_a man_n before_o regeneration_n to_o withhold_v the_o truth_n in_o unrighteousness_n now_o in_o this_o point_n we_o will_v handle_v three_o thing_n first_o what_o this_o truth_n be_v second_o how_o it_o be_v withheld_a three_o the_o greatness_n of_o the_o sin_n of_o withhold_a the_o truth_n etc._n etc._n for_o the_o first_o what_o this_o truth_n be_v truth_n you_o must_v know_v there_o be_v a_o threefold_a kind_n of_o truth_n first_o a_o natural_a truth_n write_v in_o the_o heart_n of_o man_n to_o who_o the_o scripture_n be_v never_o reveal_v second_o a_o common_a truth_n or_o common_a knowledge_n such_o as_o they_o have_v that_o live_v in_o the_o church_n but_o be_v not_o sanctify_v three_o a_o spiritual_a knowledge_n which_o sanctify_v the_o heart_n of_o they_o in_o who_o it_o be_v the_o two_o first_o whereof_o natural_a knowledge_n and_o common_a knowledge_n natural_a man_n may_v have_v now_o the_o thing_n we_o have_v to_o do_v be_v to_o show_v you_o what_o this_o knowledge_n here_o mean_v be_v because_o the_o difference_n be_v not_o very_o apparent_a now_o as_o to_o understand_v what_o a_o accident_n be_v you_o consider_v first_o where_o this_o truth_n be_v now_o there_o be_v a_o truth_n place_v in_o the_o speculative_a part_n of_o the_o mind_n or_o understanding_n which_o be_v that_o by_o which_o we_o know_v and_o judge_v aright_o concern_v god_n and_o moral_a virtue_n what_o be_v good_a and_o what_o be_v bad_a what_o be_v just_a and_o what_o be_v unjust_a whereby_o many_o man_n can_v discourse_v learned_o and_o clear_o as_o seneca_n and_o tully_n and_o other_o of_o the_o heathen_a in_o who_o we_o find_v many_o glimmering_n and_o sparkle_n of_o true_a light_n as_o we_o may_v find_v flower_n in_o the_o waste_n though_o the_o proper_a place_n be_v the_o garden_n the_o church_n be_v the_o garden_n of_o god_n as_o in_o canticle_n my_o sister_n my_o spouse_n be_v as_o a_o garden_n enclose_v and_o it_o be_v true_a these_o flower_n proper_o grow_v there_o and_o if_o you_o will_v have_v they_o you_o must_v seek_v they_o in_o the_o scripture_n in_o the_o church_n of_o god_n but_o we_o may_v likewise_o find_v they_o abroad_o second_o this_o truth_n be_v place_v in_o the_o practical_a part_n of_o the_o understanding_n and_o that_o be_v when_o we_o judge_v of_o good_a thing_n to_o be_v do_v and_o of_o ill_a thing_n not_o to_o be_v do_v and_o that_o as_o have_v reference_n to_o god_n that_o judge_n or_o reward_n and_o this_o be_v it_o divine_v call_v conscience_n and_o it_o differ_v from_o the_o other_o in_o this_o that_o that_o judge_v simple_o whether_o it_o be_v good_a or_o bad_a but_o this_o give_v law_n and_o rule_n and_o edict_n of_o life_n it_o

that_o it_o be_v god_n that_o make_v this_o truth_n evident_a this_o be_v enough_o to_o prove_v that_o it_o be_v god_n because_o it_o be_v universal_o do_v go_v to_o all_o nation_n to_o savage_a man_n that_o seem_v to_o be_v most_o remote_a from_o the_o light_n that_o come_v not_o near_o any_o mean_n of_o the_o knowledge_n of_o the_o truth_n yet_o these_o man_n believe_v there_o â—s_a a_o god_n every_o man_n without_o exception_n do_v so_o now_o where_o there_o be_v a_o universal_a effect_n it_o must_v needs_o come_v from_o a_o universal_a cause_n therefore_o from_o god_n himself_o now_o this_o be_v not_o add_v in_o vain_a deduce_v but_o this_o you_o may_v observe_v in_o that_o it_o come_v from_o god_n first_o if_o it_o come_v from_o god_n it_o be_v not_o a_o deceivable_a rule_n it_o be_v not_o a_o fancy_n but_o a_o firm_a truth_n which_o you_o may_v build_v on_o again_o if_o god_n make_v it_o know_v it_o be_v not_o do_v slight_o whatsoever_o god_n do_v if_o he_o make_v it_o by_o his_o work_n by_o scripture_n by_o the_o faithful_a three_o it_o be_v god_n that_o make_v it_o know_v therefore_o not_o a_o deceivable_a truth_n not_o a_o fancy_n or_o dream_n but_o to_o purpose_n therefore_o you_o must_v not_o neglect_v it_o in_o observe_v of_o it_o be_v happiness_n and_o in_o break_v of_o it_o you_o shall_v find_v there_o will_v come_v ruin_n and_o destruction_n man_n be_v of_o more_o or_o less_o moment_n according_a to_o the_o quality_n of_o the_o author_n the_o law_n be_v to_o be_v value_v according_a to_o the_o person_n that_o give_v the_o law_n therefore_o man_n law_n be_v of_o some_o moment_n but_o god_n law_n be_v of_o more_o moment_n this_o truth_n be_v most_o press_v in_o scripture_n when_o christ_n preach_v the_o word_n he_o say_v every_o sin_n be_v increase_v that_o be_v commit_v against_o this_o word_n when_o jonas_n come_v to_o niniveh_n it_o have_v be_v a_o great_a sin_n if_o they_o have_v not_o repent_v god_n will_v have_v visit_v they_o for_o neglect_v the_o word_n of_o jonas_n but_o a_o great_a than_o jonas_n be_v here_o say_v christ_n so_o the_o queen_n of_o the_o south_n come_v to_o hear_v the_o wisdom_n of_o infirmity_n but_o they_o say_v sin_v i_o be_o sorry_a for_o what_o i_o have_v do_v take_v heed_n thou_o be_v not_o deceive_v in_o that_o be_v it_o not_o a_o false_a sorrow_n 1._o be_v not_o thou_o more_o sorry_a for_o the_o effect_n of_o sin_n than_o for_o the_o evil_a of_o sin_n for_o the_o burn_a of_o the_o coal_n than_o for_o the_o blackness_n of_o the_o coal_n there_o be_v much_o present_a that_o be_v when_o the_o purpose_n be_v new_a and_o the_o nature_n old_a they_o be_v not_o able_a to_o dwell_v there_o but_o it_o be_v like_o a_o new_a piece_n in_o a_o old_a garment_n that_o be_v
