in_o outward_a action_n as_o creation_n preservation_n and_o redemption_n save_v only_o that_o they_o be_v distinguish_v in_o the_o manner_n of_o work_v so_o likewise_o must_v they_o be_v all_o conceive_a in_o our_o mind_n together_o when_o we_o pray_v and_o none_o sever_v out_o though_o they_o be_v not_o name_v we_o must_v pray_v to_o all_o though_o we_o name_v but_o one_o have_v in_o man_n by_o oath_n and_o not_o otherwise_o may_v either_o free_v himself_o from_o temporal_a loss_n or_o procure_v to_o himself_o temporal_a benefit_n which_o be_v of_o great_a weight_n and_o moment_n for_o a_o oath_n for_o confirmation_n be_v among_o man_n the_o end_n of_o all_o strife_n now_o we_o know_v that_o much_o strife_n and_o controversy_n do_v arise_v about_o worldly_a affair_n and_o in_o this_o regard_n a_o man_n by_o oath_n may_v lawful_o purge_v himself_o of_o infamy_n and_o slander_n in_o these_o four_o case_n a_o man_n may_v lawful_o swear_v not_o only_o public_o before_o the_o of_o oath_n use_v among_o the_o jew_n under_o which_o he_o include_v all_o indirect_a oath_n by_o the_o creature_n and_o withal_o observe_v that_o he_o add_v several_a reason_n in_o prohibit_v these_o several_a kind_n of_o indirect_a oath_n as_o that_o a_o man_n must_v not_o swear_v by_o heaven_n because_o it_o be_v the_o throne_n of_o god_n etc._n etc._n now_o as_o i_o take_v it_o christ_n do_v not_o direct_o forbid_v swear_v by_o the_o creature_n in_o this_o place_n for_o his_o intent_n be_v to_o forbid_v ordinary_a swear_v in_o common_a speech_n whether_o it_o be_v by_o god_n or_o by_o the_o creature_n which_o here_o he_o name_v because_o the_o jew_n count_v they_o but_o light_a oath_n yet_o here_o this_o point_n must_v needs_o be_v skan_v 4._o whether_o it_o be_v lawful_a at_o any_o time_n to_o swear_v by_o the_o creature_n sundry_a papist_n and_o those_o of_o the_o best_a account_n both_o for_o learning_n and_o devotion_n make_v two_o kind_n of_o oath_n in_o swear_v by_o the_o creature_n first_o when_o a_o man_n swear_v by_o the_o creature_n and_o put_v it_o in_o the_o place_n of_o god_n make_v it_o a_o judge_n and_o witness_v to_o his_o conscience_n of_o the_o truth_n of_o the_o thing_n whereof_o he_o swear_v and_o this_o do_v all_o condemn_v as_o wicked_a and_o unlawful_a both_o protestant_n and_o papist_n second_o when_o the_o creature_n be_v name_v but_o age_n yet_o with_o reverence_n to_o they_o all_o i_o see_v no_o reason_n in_o the_o word_n of_o god_n to_o warrant_v this_o kind_n of_o swear_v by_o the_o creature_n with_o direction_n to_o god_n in_o the_o mind_n of_o he_o that_o swear_v indeed_o a_o man_n may_v name_v the_o creature_n in_o his_o oath_n as_o paul_n do_v i_o call_v god_n to_o record_v to_o my_o conscience_n and_o yet_o swear_v by_o god_n for_o it_o be_v one_o thing_n to_o name_v the_o creature_n in_o swear_v and_o a_o other_o thing_n to_o swear_v by_o the_o creature_n reason_n against_o this_o form_n of_o swear_v by_o the_o creature_n be_v these_o creature_n first_o a_o oath_n be_v part_n of_o god_n worship_n as_o have_v before_o be_v show_v now_o every_o part_n of_o god_n worship_n must_v be_v refer_v to_o god_n direct_o so_o we_o pray_v and_o give_v thanks_n unto_o god_n direct_o and_o not_o in_o the_o creature_n and_o so_o we_o ought_v to_o swear_v but_o in_o indirect_a swear_n by_o the_o creature_n the_o oath_n be_v direct_o refer_v to_o the_o creature_n and_o indirect_o unto_o god_n namely_o in_o the_o creature_n which_o be_v not_o lawful_a second_o a_o man_n must_v swear_v 16._o by_o he_o that_o be_v great_a than_o himself_o and_o therefore_o 13._o god_n swear_v by_o himself_o because_o there_o be_v no_o great_a to_o swear_v by_o where_o it_o seem_v the_o holy_a ghost_n take_v it_o for_o grant_v that_o there_o be_v no_o lawful_a swear_n by_o the_o creature_n because_o they_o be_v not_o great_a than_o man_n and_o so_o there_o must_v be_v but_o one_o only_a direct_a kind_n of_o swear_v by_o god_n himself_o three_o deut._n 6._o 13._o thou_o shall_v swear_v by_o my_o name_n there_o it_o seem_v he_o prescribe_v 3_o such_o a_o form_n of_o swear_v wherein_o the_o name_n of_o god_n in_o have_v be_v move_v to_o dislike_v of_o indirect_a oath_n now_o let_v we_o see_v what_o be_v say_v in_o the_o behalf_n of_o they_o first_o it_o be_v say_v that_o 16_o joseph_n a_o man_n commend_v for_o his_o faith_n swear_v by_o the_o life_n of_o pharaoh_n therefore_o man_n may_v swear_v by_o the_o creature_n ans._n it_o may_v be_v well_o expound_v not_o to_o be_v a_o oath_n but_o a_o asseveration_n to_o this_o effect_n as_o sure_o as_o pharaoh_n live_v but_o say_v it_o be_v a_o oath_n yet_o this_o fact_n prove_v not_o the_o lawfulness_n of_o this_o kind_n of_o swear_v for_o no_o man_n be_v so_o our_o heart_n the_o hatred_n of_o any_o man_n person_n and_o strive_v to_o show_v forth_o love_a usage_n even_o towards_o our_o enemy_n though_o it_o be_v against_o our_o nature_n both_o by_o speak_v well_o of_o they_o unto_o other_o and_o show_v kindness_n unto_o they_o both_o in_o word_n and_o deed_n we_o must_v pray_v for_o they_o and_o go_v so_o far_o in_o all_o good_a duty_n towards_o they_o and_o relieve_v they_o in_o their_o necessity_n and_o because_o it_o be_v so_o bless_a a_o thing_n to_o be_v the_o child_n of_o god_n we_o must_v therefore_o hereby_o stir_v up_o ourselves_o to_o child_n for_o then_o the_o lord_n will_v acknowledge_v we_o for_o his_o own_o but_o if_o by_o sin_n we_o be_v like_o the_o devil_n god_n will_v refuse_v we_o and_o so_o we_o fall_v whole_o to_o the_o devil_n let_v we_o therefore_o practice_v those_o thing_n whereby_o this_o ground_n of_o comfort_n may_v be_v treasure_v in_o our_o heart_n three_o note_v here_o the_o style_n and_o title_n of_o honour_n which_o christ_n give_v 3_o unto_o god_n he_o call_v he_o not_o only_o their_o father_n but_o their_o father_n which_o be_v serve_v in_o heaven_n this_o he_o do_v to_o stir_v up_o reverence_n in_o his_o hearer_n towards_o god_n and_o so_o have_v god_n child_n do_v dan._n 9_o 4._o before_o that_o holy_a prophet_n power_v out_o his_o prayer_n unto_o god_n for_o his_o people_n he_o set_v out_o the_o lord_n with_o most_o glorious_a title_n o_o lord_n god_n great_a and_o terrible_a which_o keep_v covenant_n and_o mercy_n etc._n etc._n and_o jeremie_n pray_v unto_o god_n spend_v three_o the_o name_n of_o god_n to_o do_v it_o with_o all_o reverence_n and_o to_o use_v some_o title_n of_o honour_n therewithal_o to_o stir_v up_o ourselves_o and_o our_o hearer_n to_o a_o gracious_a awe_n of_o heart_n towards_o god_n majesty_n but_o lamentable_a be_v the_o practice_n of_o the_o world_n in_o this_o behalf_n for_o every_o where_o the_o name_n of_o god_n be_v toss_v in_o man_n mouth_n like_o a_o tennis-ball_n some_o in_o the_o midst_n of_o their_o laughter_n use_n o_o god_n o_o lord_n for_o breathe_a word_n but_o other_o spare_v not_o to_o make_v god_n glorious_a name_n the_o ensign_n of_o their_o rage_n and_o fury_n in_o bloody_a and_o blasphemous_a oath_n but_o void_a of_o grace_n be_v all_o such_o for_o he_o make_v the_o sun_n to_o rise_v on_o the_o evil_a and_o on_o the_o good_a and_o send_v rain_n on_o the_o just_a and_o on_o the_o unjust_a here_o christ_n propound_v the_o property_n of_o god_n in_o do_v good_a and_o show_v kindness_n to_o his_o enemy_n to_o prove_v that_o by_o so_o do_v we_o shall_v show_v ourselves_o to_o be_v his_o child_n wherein_o first_o observe_v the_o manner_n of_o christ_n speech_n he_o say_v not_o he_o have_v cause_v the_o sun_n to_o rise_v and_o have_v send_v rain_n etc._n etc._n but_o speak_v of_o the_o time_n present_a he_o do_v now_o cause_v the_o sun_n to_o rise_v and_o send_v rain_n so_o likewise_o john_n 5._o 17._o my_o father_n yet_o work_v and_o i_o work_v together_o with_o providence_n he_o in_o which_o phrase_n be_v express_v a_o notable_a work_n of_o god_n heavenly_a providence_n namely_o that_o after_o the_o creation_n of_o all_o thing_n whereby_o god_n give_v be_v unto_o the_o creature_n and_o power_n and_o virtue_n to_o do_v the_o thing_n for_o which_o they_o be_v create_v he_o do_v by_o his_o providence_n still_o preserve_v that_o be_v and_o so_o in_o every_o particular_a creature_n it_o be_v god_n that_o give_v be_v to_o the_o sun_n at_o the_o beginning_n and_o it_o be_v he_o that_o ever_o since_o continue_v the_o be_v of_o the_o sun_n with_o the_o light_n and_o virtue_n thereof_o &_o the_o same_o be_v true_a of_o all_o creature_n and_o of_o ourselves_o 28._o for_o in_o he_o we_o live_v moon_n and_o have_v our_o be_v he_o be_v not_o like_o a_o carpenter_n who_o build_v a_o house_n and_o then_o leave_v it_o but_o still_o he_o preserve_v the_o thing_n he_o have_v create_v herein_o we_o may_v well_o be_v compare_v to_o a_o spring_n or_o fountain_n which_o cause_v the_o river_n to_o flow_v while_o it_o send_v out_o water_n but_o when_o it_o be_v stop_v they_o be_v dry_v up_o even_o so_o while_o god_n continue_v the_o be_v and_o use_n of_o creature_n so_o long_o they_o be_v but_o if_o he_o withhold_v his_o hand_n from_o they_o they_o cease_v to_o be_v and_o the_o use_n of_o they_o continue_v no_o more_o thus_o it_o be_v with_o we_o both_o in_o regard_n of_o our_o soul_n and_o body_n with_o the_o faculty_n power_n and_o grace_n thereof_o for_o â—_o what_o have_v thou_o that_o thou_o have_v not_o receive_v from_o he_o who_o 3._o bear_v up_o all_o thing_n by_o his_o mighty_a word_n now_o hence_o we_o must_v learn_v these_o duty_n first_o to_o seek_v to_o know_v he_o providence_n that_o be_v daily_o about_o we_o and_o preserve_v we_o in_o soul_n and_o in_o body_n from_o hour_n to_o hour_n second_o to_o cleave_v unto_o god_n with_o our_o heart_n and_o to_o set_v our_o affection_n of_o love_n fear_v joy_n and_o hope_v whole_o upon_o he_o because_o he_o be_v the_o author_n and_o continuer_n of_o our_o be_v what_o ever_o it_o be_v three_o to_o obey_v our_o god_n in_o all_o thing_n for_o shall_v he_o give_v be_v to_o our_o body_n
god_n and_o to_o conceive_v aright_o of_o this_o god_n namely_o that_o he_o be_v one_o in_o essence_n and_o three_o in_o person_n and_o that_o the_o person_n must_v be_v worship_v in_o the_o unity_n of_o the_o godhead_n for_o as_o they_o be_v one_o in_o nature_n so_o we_o must_v unite_v they_o in_o one_o and_o the_o same_o worship_n again_o by_o nature_n we_o take_v liberty_n to_o ourselves_o to_o forget_v the_o true_a god_n and_o in_o our_o own_o heart_n do_v set_v up_o a_o false_a god_n unto_o ourselves_o some_o make_v riches_n their_o god_n some_o honour_n some_o pleasure_n for_o look_v whereon_o a_o man_n bestow_v his_o heart_n and_o his_o affection_n as_o his_o love_n his_o fear_n and_o confidence_n that_o he_o make_v his_o god_n and_o hence_o it_o come_v that_o some_o in_o judgement_n hold_v the_o true_a god_n and_o yet_o have_v a_o false_a god_n unto_o themselves_o in_o their_o heart_n but_o the_o first_o commandment_n restrain_v we_o of_o this_o liberty_n also_o and_o it_o enjoin_v we_o to_o bestow_v our_o whole_a heart_n and_o all_o our_o affection_n on_o the_o true_a god_n love_v fear_v and_o trust_v in_o he_o above_o all_o three_o our_o nature_n be_v to_o exalt_v ourselves_o &_o to_o ascribe_v some_o thing_n unto_o ourselves_o esteem_v the_o good_a thing_n that_o be_v in_o we_o as_o of_o ourselves_o and_o as_o though_o they_o be_v our_o own_o whereby_o we_o take_v to_o ourselves_o some_o thing_n that_o be_v proper_a to_o god_n become_v like_a to_o the_o prodigal_a child_n which_o will_v have_v his_o portion_n to_o himself_o sever_v from_o his_o father_n with_o this_o natural_a pride_n be_v david_n puff_v up_o when_o he_o number_v the_o people_n but_o the_o first_o commandment_n restrain_v we_o of_o this_o also_o perscribe_v unto_o we_o the_o duty_n of_o inward_a adoration_n which_o we_o perform_v first_o when_o we_o give_v unto_o he_o all_o the_o honour_n that_o we_o can_v esteem_v ourselves_o but_o dust_n and_o ash_n and_o ascribe_v unto_o he_o all_o the_o good_a that_o be_v in_o we_o as_o from_o he_o second_o when_o we_o subject_v ourselves_o unto_o he_o whole_o as_o to_o our_o creator_n and_o do_v submit_v our_o heart_n will_n and_o conscience_n to_o his_o holy_a word_n and_o these_o be_v the_o strait_a way_n which_o this_o commandment_n perscribes_fw-la us._n the_o 2._o commandment_n concern_v god_n outward_a worship_n and_o it_o com._n put_v unto_o we_o many_o restraint_n our_o nature_n desire_v to_o conceive_v of_o god_n in_o some_o form_n and_o to_o represent_v he_o in_o some_o image_n but_o the_o lord_n be_v a_o spirit_n and_o this_o commandment_n enjoin_v we_o to_o worship_v he_o in_o spirit_n and_o truth_n and_o to_o conceive_v of_o he_o in_o his_o work_n and_o property_n restrain_v our_o natural_a desire_n of_o conceive_v and_o represent_v god_n second_o it_o be_v our_o nature_n to_o perform_v outward_a worship_n unto_o god_n only_o but_o for_o any_o further_a thing_n we_o will_v take_v liberty_n to_o ourselves_o we_o will_v give_v he_o only_o the_o outward_a bodily_a worship_n as_o come_v to_o church_n hear_v the_o word_n pray_v outward_o and_o receive_v the_o sacrament_n but_o the_o lord_n in_o this_o commandment_n give_v we_o charge_n that_o with_o as_o great_a care_n &_o conscience_n we_o shall_v give_v unto_o he_o the_o inward_a worship_n of_o the_o heart_n for_o god_n must_v be_v serve_v with_o the_o whole_a man_n our_o love_n &_o fear_n &_o trust_v in_o god_n must_v be_v comformable_a to_o our_o outward_a worship_n further_o every_o man_n almost_o can_v be_v content_a to_o profess_v religion_n and_o to_o perform_v so_o much_o as_o the_o law_n of_o his_o country_n require_v for_o the_o service_n of_o god_n but_o yet_o they_o will_v take_v liberty_n in_o their_o calling_n to_o live_v as_o they_o list_v but_o god_n commandment_n restrain_v this_o desire_n also_o we_o must_v hold_v religion_n not_o only_o in_o the_o church_n but_o also_o show_v the_o same_o in_o our_o life_n and_o conversation_n and_o therefore_o be_v the_o second_o table_n join_v with_o the_o first_o to_o teach_v we_o that_o we_o must_v perform_v duty_n to_o god_n in_o the_o service_n of_o man_n the_o three_o commandment_n concern_v the_o holy_a use_n of_o the_o holy_a thing_n com._n of_o god_n especial_o of_o his_o word_n and_o sacrament_n now_o for_o the_o outward_a work_n of_o hear_v the_o word_n and_o receive_v the_o sacrament_n we_o be_v content_a to_o perform_v they_o but_o we_o will_v have_v god_n think_v himself_o satisfy_v with_o the_o work_n do_v but_o this_o commandment_n restrain_v we_o of_o this_o desire_n injoin_v we_o not_o only_o to_o use_v his_o holy_a thing_n but_o also_o in_o a_o holy_a manner_n that_o be_v with_o repent_v &_o believe_v heart_n for_o they_o be_v not_o holy_a to_o we_o unless_o we_o use_v they_o in_o and_o by_o faith_n and_o repentance_n again_o we_o take_v liberty_n to_o use_v god_n name_n in_o oath_n and_o special_o in_o vow_n as_o in_o baptism_n which_o we_o renew_v when_o we_o come_v to_o the_o lord_n table_n but_o herein_o we_o ordinary_o abuse_v this_o his_o holy_a name_n not_o have_v like_o care_n to_o make_v good_a our_o vow_n unto_o god_n as_o we_o have_v to_o make_v they_o the_o 4._o commandment_n concern_v the_o time_n of_o god_n worship_n we_o our_o com._n self_n will_v have_v all_o time_n in_o our_o own_o dispose_n &_o we_o think_v it_o hard_o to_o be_v restrain_v of_o any_o time_n but_o this_o commandment_n restrain_v we_o of_o this_o desire_n bind_v we_o in_o conscience_n to_o give_v one_o day_n in_o seven_o to_o the_o honour_n of_o god_n in_o his_o public_a and_o solemn_a worship_n the_o 5._o comm_n concern_v the_o give_v of_o honour_n and_o reverence_n to_o superior_n com._n and_o it_o restrain_v we_o of_o our_o natural_a desire_n which_o be_v to_o seek_v for_o and_o to_o take_v honour_n unto_o ourselves_o alone_o for_o this_o injoin_v we_o to_o give_v honour_n one_o to_o another_o especial_o to_o they_o to_o who_o it_o belong_v as_o to_o all_o superior_n in_o authority_n in_o gift_n or_o age_n let_v this_o be_v your_o honour_n say_v paul_n to_o give_v honour_n to_o who_o it_o belong_v rom._n 13._o 7._o the_o six_o commandment_n concern_v murder_n and_o it_o restrain_v our_o 6._o natural_a desire_n which_o be_v upon_o small_a occasion_n to_o conceive_v malice_n and_o to_o bear_v grudge_v against_o our_o brother_n forbid_v all_o thought_n word_n deed_n and_o gesture_n which_o tend_v to_o the_o impair_n or_o destroy_v of_o our_o neighbour_n life_n and_o person_n the_o 7._o commandment_n concern_v chastity_n and_o it_o restrain_v man_n 7._o nature_n which_o desire_v to_o take_v liberty_n in_o uncleanness_n and_o fornication_n both_o of_o heart_n and_o life_n and_o it_o bind_v we_o to_o abstain_v from_o all_o speech_n action_n or_o gesture_n which_o tend_v to_o the_o hindrance_n of_o our_o own_o or_o of_o our_o neighbour_n chastity_n for_o god_n be_v holy_a and_o pure_a and_o so_o ought_v our_o body_n and_o mind_n to_o be_v which_o be_v temple_n of_o his_o bless_a spirit_n the_o 8._o commandment_n concern_v our_o neighbour_n good_n and_o it_o restrain_v 8._o our_o corrupt_a nature_n which_o desire_v to_o have_v liberty_n by_o all_o mean_v good_a and_o bad_a to_o intich_v ourselves_o and_o it_o injoin_v we_o both_o in_o will_n and_o word_n and_o in_o traffic_n also_o to_o seek_v the_o common_a good_a and_o the_o good_a of_o those_o with_o who_o we_o live_v again_o this_o also_o restrain_v our_o natural_a desire_n of_o abundance_n injoin_v we_o to_o seek_v only_o for_o necessary_n as_o food_n and_o raiment_n for_o we_o may_v not_o seek_v to_o be_v rich_a yet_o if_o god_n give_v we_o more_o than_o thing_n necessary_a in_o the_o labour_n of_o our_o call_n than_o we_o be_v to_o bless_v god_n for_o they_o and_o to_o use_v they_o to_o his_o glory_n this_o be_v a_o strait_a way_n to_o the_o worldly_a man_n but_o it_o must_v stand_v and_o we_o must_v walk_v in_o it_o if_o we_o will_v enter_v into_o life_n the_o 9_o commandment_n concern_v our_o neighbour_n good_a name_n and_o 9_o it_o restrain_v we_o of_o our_o natural_a desire_n which_o be_v to_o conceive_v and_o speak_v unto_o other_o as_o also_o to_o receive_v from_o other_o evil_a report_n of_o our_o neighbour_n and_o on_o the_o contrary_a it_o enjoin_v we_o by_o all_o good_a mean_n to_o seek_v to_o preserve_v our_o neighbour_n good_a name_n and_o credit_n the_o 10._o commandment_n be_v touch_v lust_n when_o as_o we_o hurt_v no_o man_n in_o word_n or_o deed_n than_o we_o take_v it_o for_o grant_v that_o we_o may_v think_v 10._o what_o we_o will_v no_o law_n restrain_v think_v that_o we_o hold_v to_o be_v free_a but_o this_o commandment_n restrain_v the_o very_a first_o motion_n
