falsehood_n but_o here_o i_o must_v tell_v you_o that_o he_o mean_v not_o of_o that_o logic_n which_o be_v use_v now_o a_o day_n most_o in_o school_n stand_v for_o the_o most_o part_n upon_o brawling_n and_o contention_n and_o propound_v of_o frivolous_a question_n serve_v to_o nought_o else_o but_o subtlety_n and_o inextricable_a knot_n fit_a to_o nourish_v argument_n then_o to_o teach_v or_o explain_v the_o truth_n which_o abuse_n antisthenes_n mislike_v say_v it_o be_v meet_a to_o instruct_v he_o that_o contend_v then_o by_o contention_n to_o overcome_v he_o for_o logic_n be_v indeed_o the_o way_n and_o mean_a to_o instruct_v and_o teach_v and_o as_o before_o be_v say_v the_o proper_a instrument_n of_o science_n such_o as_o learn_v it_o only_o to_o contend_v forsake_v the_o right_a end_n and_o scope_n of_o that_o art_n and_o be_v as_o fruitless_a to_o their_o follower_n or_o scholar_n as_o mire_n be_v to_o the_o way_n fare_v man_n which_o beside_o the_o defile_n of_o his_o garment_n do_v oftentimes_o make_v he_o also_o to_o fall_v therefore_o plato_n in_o his_o time_n cry_v out_o upon_o the_o same_o judge_v it_o not_o without_o cause_n to_o be_v a_o mere_a folly_n that_o hinder_v the_o knowledge_n of_o truth_n and_o the_o learning_n of_o those_o thing_n which_o the_o sound_a and_o wise_a philosopher_n teach_v as_o well_o touch_v virtuous_a and_o civil_a action_n as_o natural_a and_o divine_a science_n from_o which_o this_o vain_a science_n put_v man_n astray_o so_o long_o as_o it_o teach_v only_o to_o argue_v and_o to_o contend_v whereby_o it_o come_v to_o pass_v that_o while_o they_o be_v more_o intentive_a to_o the_o word_n and_o circumstance_n then_o to_o the_o matter_n the_o more_o they_o strive_v to_o seem_v learned_a and_o subtle_a the_o less_o they_o show_v themselves_o to_o understand_v next_o to_o logic_n be_v rhetoric_n to_o be_v place_v or_o the_o art_n of_o oratory_n which_o leontinus_n do_v prefer_v before_o all_o other_o because_o it_o make_v itself_o lady_n over_o man_n mind_n not_o by_o force_n or_o violence_n but_o by_o their_o own_o consent_n and_o freewill_n and_o as_o zeno_n express_v the_o difference_n between_o these_o two_o art_n by_o resemble_v the_o former_a to_o his_o hand_n close_v and_o the_o latter_a to_o his_o hand_n stretch_v out_o so_o do_v rhetoric_n use_v argument_n with_o less_o force_n and_o efficacy_n than_o logic_n yet_o fetch_v they_o from_o logic_n as_o from_o a_o fountain_n or_o well_o head_n not_o to_o seek_v out_o the_o truth_n exact_o but_o only_o to_o persuade_v or_o dissuade_v with_o they_o that_o which_o he_o think_v most_o profitable_a for_o the_o speaker_n or_o the_o person_n for_o who_o he_o speak_v and_o of_o this_o art_n have_v all_o public_a and_o private_a action_n appertain_v to_o civil_a life_n need_v to_o persuade_v what_o be_v good_a and_o profitable_a and_o to_o dissuade_v what_o be_v hurtful_a or_o unprofitable_a to_o appease_v tumult_n and_o dissension_n to_o treat_v of_o league_n and_o peace_n to_o stir_v up_o the_o mind_n of_o man_n to_o the_o defence_n of_o their_o friend_n their_o parent_n their_o prince_n and_o country_n and_o their_o religion_n to_o search_v out_o and_o investigate_v the_o truth_n of_o all_o thing_n to_o assist_v the_o innocent_a and_o oppress_v in_o court_n of_o judgement_n to_o accuse_v the_o faulty_a and_o offender_n and_o final_o to_o give_v unto_o virtue_n her_o due_a praise_n and_o commendation_n and_o unto_o vice_n due_a blame_n and_o reproach_n by_o these_o mean_n and_o study_n which_o we_o have_v brief_o touch_v rather_o than_o perfect_o declare_v ought_v a_o young_a man_n to_o be_v frame_v to_o civil_a conversation_n and_o instruct_v with_o all_o carefulness_n that_o he_o may_v learn_v to_o bridle_v his_o concupiscible_a desire_n his_o angry_a and_o disordinate_a motion_n occasion_v by_o the_o sense_n and_o stir_v up_o by_o those_o two_o part_n of_o the_o mind_n which_o be_v rebellious_a and_o contrary_a to_o reason_n whereby_o he_o may_v give_v himself_o whole_o to_o honest_a and_o virtuous_a endeavour_n and_o because_o store_n of_o wealth_n oft_o time_n cause_v young_a man_n when_o they_o possess_v it_o to_o turn_v aside_o from_o virtue_n because_o riches_n be_v the_o nurse_n of_o wantonness_n in_o those_o year_n great_a regard_n be_v to_o be_v have_v that_o as_o the_o father_n so_o far_o as_o his_o state_n require_v be_v not_o to_o suffer_v his_o son_n to_o want_v any_o thing_n that_o be_v necessary_a for_o his_o call_n so_o must_v he_o take_v heed_n that_o he_o be_v not_o so_o feed_v with_o money_n as_o feed_v thereby_o his_o lust_n and_o sensual_a appetite_n he_o may_v abandon_v the_o good_a thought_n of_o virtue_n and_o receive_v in_o steed_n of_o they_o the_o seed_n of_o unruly_a and_o disorderly_a affection_n which_o of_o themselves_o be_v by_o nature_n in_o youth_n much_o more_o mighty_a than_o be_v fit_a and_o need_v not_o to_o be_v holpen_v by_o plenty_n of_o riches_n for_o to_o give_v a_o young_a man_n money_n at_o will_n to_o dispose_v as_o he_o list_v unless_o the_o father_n find_v as_o in_o some_o young_a man_n it_o happen_v that_o he_o have_v prevent_v his_o year_n with_o staidness_n and_o discretion_n be_v even_o as_o much_o as_o to_o put_v a_o sword_n into_o the_o hand_n of_o a_o furious_a or_o mad_a man_n by_o this_o the_o sun_n be_v so_o far_o decline_v towards_o our_o horizon_n as_o all_o the_o company_n think_v it_o time_n to_o depart_v that_o they_o may_v before_o sunset_a reach_n to_o the_o city_n wherefore_o sir_n robert_n dillon_n rise_v up_o say_v howsoever_o the_o lateness_n of_o the_o day_n call_v we_o away_o yet_o the_o desire_n to_o hear_v on_o further_a the_o discourse_n of_o so_o good_a a_o matter_n have_v draw_v we_o on_o in_o such_o sort_n as_o we_o have_v scarce_o perceive_v how_o the_o time_n be_v past_a and_o for_o your_o second_o feast_n you_o have_v right_a dainty_o and_o plenteous_o entertain_v us._n we_o must_v now_o expect_v the_o three_o which_o to_o morrow_n god_n will_v we_o will_v not_o fail_v to_o come_v and_o accept_v in_o hope_n that_o though_o we_o be_v cumbersome_a &_o troublesome_a unto_o you_o yet_o as_o well_o in_o regard_n of_o discharge_v your_o promise_n as_o of_o accomplish_v the_o desire_n of_o so_o many_o your_o friend_n you_o will_v not_o think_v it_o much_o to_o afford_v we_o your_o patience_n and_o your_o breath_n in_o deliver_v to_o we_o the_o substance_n of_o your_o author_n three_o dialogue_n of_o civil_a life_n by_o which_o we_o may_v learn_v as_o much_o as_o he_o have_v write_v of_o the_o ethic_a part_n of_o moral_a philosophy_n teach_v the_o ready_a way_n for_o every_o man_n in_o his_o private_a course_n of_o life_n to_o attain_v his_o felicity_n and_o that_o end_n of_o which_o all_o this_o discourse_n of_o you_o have_v have_v his_o beginning_n and_o so_o take_v their_o leave_n all_o together_o they_o depart_v the_o three_o day_n meeting_n and_o discourse_n of_o civil_a life_n i_o be_v not_o yet_o full_o apparel_v on_o the_o next_o morrow_n when_o look_v out_o of_o my_o window_n towards_o the_o city_n i_o may_v perceive_v the_o company_n all_o in_o a_o troop_n come_v together_o not_o as_o man_n walk_v soft_o to_o sport_n or_o desirous_a to_o refresh_v themselves_o with_o the_o morning_n dew_n and_o the_o sweet_a pleasant_a air_n that_o then_o invite_v all_o person_n to_o leave_v their_o sluggish_a nest_n but_o as_o man_n earnest_o bend_v to_o their_o journey_n and_o that_o have_v their_o head_n busy_v about_o some_o matter_n of_o great_a moment_n than_o their_o recreation_n i_o therefore_o haste_v to_o make_v i_o ready_a that_o they_o may_v not_o find_v i_o in_o case_n to_o be_v tax_v by_o they_o of_o drowsiness_n and_o be_v out_o of_o the_o door_n before_o they_o come_v to_o the_o house_n where_o salute_v they_o and_o they_o have_v courteous_o return_v the_o good_a morrow_n unto_o i_o the_o lord_n primate_n ask_v i_o whether_o that_o company_n make_v i_o not_o afraid_a to_o see_v they_o come_v in_o such_o sort_n upon_o i_o be_v but_o a_o poor_a farmer_n for_o though_o they_o come_v not_o arm_v like_o soldier_n to_o be_v cess_v upon_o i_o yet_o their_o purpose_n be_v to_o coynie_n upon_o i_o and_o to_o eat_v i_o out_o of_o house_n and_o home_n to_o who_o i_o answer_v that_o as_o long_o as_o i_o see_v counsellor_n in_o the_o company_n i_o need_v not_o fear_v that_o any_o such_o unlawful_a exaction_n as_o coynie_n shall_v be_v require_v at_o my_o hand_n for_o the_o law_n have_v sufficient_o provide_v for_o the_o abolish_n thereof_o and_o though_o i_o know_v that_o among_o the_o irishry_n it_o be_v not_o yet_o clean_o take_v away_o yet_o among_o such_o as_o be_v ameynable_a to_o law_n and_o civil_a it_o be_v not_o use_v or_o exact_v as_o for_o
of_o the_o disciple_n of_o socrates_n do_v so_o degenerate_a from_o the_o doctrine_n and_o behaviour_n of_o his_o master_n that_o he_o become_v a_o parasite_n to_o dionysius_n tyrant_n of_o sicily_n esteem_v more_o the_o profit_n he_o get_v that_o way_n them_z the_o reputation_n he_o may_v have_v win_v by_o the_o profession_n of_o philosophy_n and_o grow_v in_o the_o end_n to_o be_v of_o so_o base_a a_o mind_n that_o although_o the_o tyrant_n do_v spit_v in_o his_o face_n yet_o will_v he_o not_o be_v angry_a but_o be_v rebuke_v for_o endure_v so_o vile_a a_o disgrace_n he_o laugh_v at_o they_o that_o rebuke_v he_o say_v if_o fisherman_n to_o take_v a_o small_a fish_n can_v be_v content_a to_o go_v to_o sea_n and_o to_o be_v wash_v all_o over_o with_o the_o wave_n shall_v not_o i_o endure_v that_o the_o king_n with_o a_o little_a spittle_n wet_v i_o to_o the_o end_n i_o may_v catch_v a_o whale_n this_o same_o aristippus_n see_v diogenes_n on_o a_o day_n to_o wash_v a_o few_o herb_n which_o he_o have_v gather_v for_o his_o supper_n he_o say_v to_o he_o go_v to_o sirrah_n if_o you_o will_v frame_v yourself_o to_o follow_v the_o humour_n of_o prince_n you_o shall_v not_o need_v to_o feed_v upon_o herb_n neither_o thou_o say_v diogenes_n if_o thou_o know_v thyself_o to_o be_v i_o will_v not_o say_v a_o philosopher_n but_o a_o man_n thou_o will_v not_o be_v as_o thou_o be_v the_o dog_n of_o dionysius_n for_o dog_n for_o their_o meat_n fawn_v upon_o their_o master_n and_o so_o do_v this_o philosopher_n show_v how_o base_a and_o vile_a a_o thing_n it_o be_v to_o be_v a_o flatterer_n which_o by_o this_o digression_n my_o author_n have_v in_o like_a sort_n labour_v to_o make_v apparent_a by_o reason_n and_o example_n but_o now_o return_v to_o his_o former_a matter_n because_o he_o have_v rather_o show_v the_o harm_n that_o come_v by_o flattery_n and_o how_o it_o increase_v vice_n in_o young_a man_n mind_n then_o instruct_v they_o which_o way_n to_o root_v it_o out_o you_o shall_v hear_v how_o he_o go_v about_o to_o pull_v up_o the_o ill_a weed_n that_o choke_v the_o natural_a good_a seed_n in_o their_o mind_n that_o by_o the_o increase_n of_o the_o good_a they_o may_v have_v sufficient_a store_n to_o furnish_v they_o in_o the_o way_n of_o their_o felicity_n it_o be_v already_o declare_v what_o bad_a quality_n and_o condition_n the_o two_o worse_a power_n of_o the_o soul_n stir_v up_o in_o young_a man_n mind_n for_o that_o they_o be_v mighty_a and_o vehement_a and_o apt_a to_o oppose_v themselves_o against_o reason_n and_o to_o resist_v she_o and_o how_o reason_n in_o young_a folk_n be_v scarce_o feel_v or_o perceive_v such_o be_v the_o force_n of_o the_o two_o foresay_a faculty_n which_o draw_v they_o to_o lustful_a appetite_n and_o disordinate_a passion_n the_o cause_n whereof_o heraclitus_n ascribe_v to_o the_o humidity_n wherewith_o these_o two_o age_n abound_v for_o it_o seem_v to_o he_o that_o dryness_n be_v the_o cause_n of_o wisdom_n and_o therefore_o say_v that_o the_o wise_a mind_n be_v nothing_o else_o but_o a_o dry_a light_n to_o which_o opinion_n galen_n lean_v think_v the_o star_n to_o be_v most_o wise_a because_o they_o be_v most_o dry_a but_o leave_v they_o with_o their_o opinion_n and_o impute_v the_o cause_n only_o to_o the_o worse_a power_n or_o faculty_n of_o the_o soul_n let_v we_o follow_v our_o two_o first_o choose_v guide_n aristotle_n &_o plato_n they_o say_v then_o that_o the_o soul_n which_o give_v sense_n or_o feeling_n and_o contain_v in_o it_o the_o other_o that_o give_v life_n be_v not_o yet_o so_o rebellious_a against_o reason_n but_o that_o she_o maybe_o subdue_v and_o bring_v to_o be_v obedient_a so_o as_o you_o must_v not_o think_v but_o that_o youth_n though_o it_o be_v encumber_v with_o those_o passion_n and_o desire_n before_o mention_v may_v nevertheless_o be_v direct_v to_o that_o good_a course_n which_o lead_v man_n to_o his_o most_o perfect_a end_n in_o this_o life_n and_o for_o which_o all_o virtue_n be_v put_v in_o action_n for_o above_o or_o over_o these_o two_o power_n or_o faculty_n be_v place_v a_o three_o like_o a_o lady_n or_o queen_n to_o command_v if_o she_o be_v not_o hinder_v in_o the_o execution_n of_o her_o charge_n and_o if_o these_o two_o unruly_a and_o wild_a power_n which_o be_v the_o spring_n and_o fountain_n head_n of_o all_o disordinate_a affection_n be_v once_o well_o tame_v and_o break_v they_o do_v no_o less_o obey_v her_o commandment_n than_o the_o well_o teach_v horse_n obey_v the_o coachman_n for_o we_o be_v all_o draw_v as_o it_o be_v by_o two_o unbridled_a colt_n in_o this_o life_n by_o these_o two_o base_a power_n of_o the_o soul_n whereof_o the_o one_o show_v itself_o in_o most_o vigour_n and_o strength_n in_o childhood_n and_o the_o other_o in_o youth_n concern_v the_o first_o of_o which_o aristotle_n and_o his_o master_n do_v disagree_v but_o when_o they_o both_o be_v join_v together_o and_o strong_a they_o become_v the_o more_o unruly_a unless_o the_o former_a as_o be_v say_v yesterday_o be_v well_o tame_v and_o make_v meek_a by_o good_a instruction_n and_o diligent_a care_n of_o education_n for_o if_o childhood_n be_v fashion_v according_a to_o the_o good_a precept_n of_o the_o learned_a that_o first_o power_n come_v humble_a &_o obedient_a to_o be_v couple_v with_o the_o other_o and_o thereby_o be_v there_o the_o less_o labour_n requisite_a for_o he_o that_o shall_v have_v the_o guide_n of_o they_o both_o in_o youth_n but_o in_o youth_n describe_v even_o now_o as_o you_o have_v hear_v in_o who_o both_o these_o faculty_n be_v rude_a and_o undisciplined_a the_o passion_n be_v altogether_o incite_v and_o rule_v by_o the_o natural_a power_n for_o though_o nature_n if_o she_o be_v not_o hinder_v bring_v forth_o her_o effect_n perfect_o in_o respect_n of_o their_o substance_n yet_o be_v they_o often_o unperfect_a in_o regard_n of_o the_o accident_n and_o for_o this_o cause_n be_v art_n and_o industry_n needful_a to_o induce_v virtuous_a habit_n to_o supply_v that_o wherein_o nature_n accidental_o may_v be_v defective_a whereby_o it_o come_v to_o pass_v that_o although_o the_o virtue_n and_o faculty_n of_o the_o soul_n have_v all_o that_o which_o nature_n can_v give_v unto_o they_o yet_o have_v they_o need_v of_o man_n wit_n and_o discipline_n to_o bring_v forth_o laudable_a and_o perfect_a operation_n and_o this_o be_v do_v by_o that_o part_n of_o philosophy_n which_o be_v call_v moral_a because_o from_o it_o we_o do_v draw_v the_o form_n of_o good_a manner_n which_o be_v actual_o bring_v into_o the_o mind_n of_o a_o young_a man_n as_o well_o as_o by_o the_o doctrine_n and_o wise_a instruction_n of_o other_o and_o so_o by_o long_a custom_n convert_v into_o a_o habit_n do_v break_v and_o make_v supple_a those_o part_n which_o by_o nature_n be_v rebellious_a to_o reason_n and_o of_o so_o great_a importance_n be_v the_o well_o train_v up_o of_o childhood_n even_o from_o the_o first_o that_o it_o may_v be_v assure_o believe_v that_o the_o youth_n succeed_v such_o a_o childhood_n as_o be_v yesterday_o prescribe_v must_v needs_o be_v civil_a and_o well_o dispose_v and_o on_o the_o contrary_a side_n that_o the_o life_n of_o such_o youth_n will_v be_v wicked_a and_o disorder_v as_o have_v be_v ill_o bring_v up_o in_o their_o childhood_n do_v enter_v into_o so_o hopeless_a a_o course_n as_o may_v be_v likely_a to_o be_v the_o foundation_n of_o all_o vice_n and_o wickedness_n during_o the_o whole_a life_n to_o come_v and_o hopeless_a may_v they_o be_v think_v indeed_o who_o by_o ill_o do_v begin_v even_o from_o their_o tender_a year_n to_o induce_v a_o ill_a habit_n into_o their_o mind_n for_o from_o age_n to_o age_n after_o it_o increase_v and_o take_v root_n in_o such_o sort_n as_o it_o be_v almost_o impossible_a to_o be_v root_v out_o or_o take_v away_o neither_o can_v there_o be_v any_o great_a evil_a wish_v to_o any_o man_n then_o that_o he_o be_v ill-habituated_n which_o thing_n by_o aelianus_n report_n the_o cretan_n be_v wont_a to_o wish_v to_o their_o enemy_n who_o they_o hate_v most_o extreme_o and_o not_o without_o cause_n for_o he_o that_o be_v fall_v into_o a_o ill_a habit_n be_v no_o less_o blind_a to_o virtuous_a action_n than_o he_o that_o want_v his_o sight_n to_o thing_n visible_a and_o as_o the_o one_o be_v ever_o plunge_v in_o perpetual_a darkness_n so_o do_v the_o other_o live_v in_o everlasting_a night_n of_o vice_n after_o he_o have_v once_o harden_v himself_o to_o evil_a and_o this_o be_v the_o worst_a kind_n of_o youth_n that_o may_v be_v which_o aristotle_n advise_v shall_v be_v drive_v out_o of_o the_o city_n when_o neither_o for_o honesty_n respect_v nor_o for_o admonition_n nor_o shame_n nor_o for_o
contemplation_n of_o her_o maker_n be_v waken_v from_o her_o sleep_n among_o those_o bless_a spirit_n as_o she_o have_v be_v before_o she_o be_v enclose_v in_o this_o earthly_a prison_n and_o likewise_o he_o seem_v to_o lean_a to_o plato_n his_o opinion_n in_o another_o place_n when_o speak_v of_o she_o also_o he_o say_v she_o be_v return_v to_o her_o fellow_n star_n for_o plato_n think_v the_o number_n of_o soul_n create_v be_v according_a to_o the_o number_n of_o the_o star_n in_o heaven_n and_o that_o every_o soul_n have_v a_o proper_a star_n to_o which_o it_o return_v after_o this_o life_n but_o as_o for_o our_o knowledge_n in_o truth_n it_o be_v but_o a_o shadow_n in_o respect_n of_o the_o knowledge_n our_o soul_n shall_v have_v by_o the_o contemplation_n of_o the_o divine_a essence_n whereupon_o socrates_n one_o of_o the_o wise_a and_o most_o learned_a man_n that_o ever_o be_v yet_o evermore_o affirm_v resolute_o that_o the_o only_a thing_n he_o know_v be_v that_o he_o know_v nothing_o and_o to_o say_v true_o this_o his_o know_v of_o nothing_o may_v well_o be_v term_v a_o learned_a ignorance_n well_o say_v the_o lord_n primate_n captain_n carlisle_n and_o captain_n norreis_n have_v by_o their_o demand_n minister_v a_o very_a fit_a occasion_n unto_o you_o to_o discourse_v out_o of_o your_o author_n the_o consideration_n of_o the_o manner_n of_o our_o knowledge_n and_o consequent_o of_o the_o soul_n of_o man_n and_o to_o declare_v withal_o the_o opinion_n of_o two_o so_o excellent_a philosopher_n and_o of_o their_o follower_n but_o though_o both_o agree_v in_o this_o that_o whether_o the_o soul_n learn_v of_o new_a or_o by_o rememorate_n she_o have_v always_o need_v of_o the_o sense_n as_o her_o minister_n to_o attain_v knowledge_n yet_o be_v it_o to_o be_v believe_v and_o that_o assure_o that_o the_o soul_n of_o man_n be_v create_v by_o god_n almighty_a to_o his_o own_o image_n and_o likeness_n she_o have_v also_o some_o proper_a operation_n or_o action_n resemble_v his_o to_o the_o accomplishment_n whereof_o she_o have_v no_o need_n of_o the_o sense_n and_o that_o be_v dissolve_v from_o the_o body_n or_o after_o when_o he_o shall_v be_v reunite_v to_o the_o same_o in_o the_o resurrection_n she_o have_v then_o the_o same_o image_n and_o likeness_n of_o god_n still_o in_o she_o she_o shall_v everlasting_o be_v whole_o and_o only_o intent_n to_o the_o contemplation_n of_o his_o divine_a majesty_n who_o be_v the_o only_a true_a and_o perfect_a good_a and_o happiness_n the_o perfection_n of_o which_o divine_a majesty_n be_v the_o knowledge_n of_o himself_o and_o know_v himself_o to_o know_v all_o thing_n by_o he_o create_v and_o produce_v but_o it_o be_v time_n now_o for_o you_o to_o return_v to_o the_o matter_n you_o have_v in_o hand_n when_o you_o be_v draw_v by_o their_o demand_n to_o make_v this_o digression_n and_o even_o so_o will_v i_o since_o you_o be_v so_o please_v quoth_v i_o and_o so_o proceed_v in_o this_o manner_n in_o the_o begin_n of_o youth_n the_o young_a man_n be_v fit_o to_o be_v resemble_v to_o a_o traveller_n that_o be_v arrive_v in_o his_o journey_n to_o a_o place_n where_o the_o way_n be_v divide_v into_o two_o part_n and_o stand_v in_o doubt_n which_o of_o they_o he_o shall_v take_v for_o in_o either_o of_o they_o he_o see_v a_o guide_n stand_v ready_a to_o lead_v he_o whereof_o the_o one_o invit_v he_o to_o pleasure_n and_o the_o other_o to_o virtue_n the_o first_o propose_v to_o he_o his_o delight_n and_o ease_n and_o the_o other_o labour_n and_o travel_v and_o forasmuch_o as_o that_o age_n be_v incline_v natural_o to_o pleasure_n and_o enemy_n to_o paine-taking_a and_o labour_n it_o be_v great_o to_o be_v doubt_v that_o the_o young_a man_n leave_v the_o way_n that_o lead_v to_o virtue_n will_v betake_v himself_o to_o the_o other_o guide_n to_o follow_v the_o way_n that_o lead_v to_o delight_v wherefore_o if_o at_o any_o time_n it_o be_v needful_a for_o the_o father_n to_o have_v a_o watchful_a eye_n upon_o his_o son_n it_o be_v then_o most_o important_a when_o his_o child_n be_v to_o make_v his_o passage_n from_o his_o childhood_n into_o his_o youth_n and_o at_o that_o time_n to_o set_v before_o his_o eye_n continual_o instruction_n whereby_o he_o may_v conceive_v how_o honesty_n and_o good_a behaviour_n with_o civil_a conversation_n be_v the_o foundation_n of_o good_a and_o happy_a life_n and_o this_o chief_o be_v he_o to_o do_v by_o his_o own_o example_n for_o though_o it_o be_v very_o good_a that_o his_o son_n in_o those_o year_n and_o at_o all_o other_o time_n shall_v see_v the_o whole_a family_n so_o order_v as_o he_o may_v learn_v nothing_o therein_o but_o virtue_n and_o honesty_n yet_o must_v he_o not_o think_v but_o that_o his_o son_n will_v better_o believe_v and_o follow_v what_o he_o shall_v see_v himself_o do_v or_o say_v than_o all_o the_o family_n beside_o and_o if_o aristotle_n advise_v master_n to_o endeavour_n themselves_o to_o give_v good_a example_n to_o their_o servant_n and_o slave_n how_o much_o more_o ought_v the_o father_n to_o be_v careful_a to_o do_v the_o like_a to_o his_o own_o child_n who_o be_v dear_a to_o he_o then_o his_o servant_n be_v his_o own_o lively_a image_n for_o as_o it_o be_v the_o mother_n care_n and_o office_n to_o breed_v and_o nourish_v her_o child_n so_o be_v it_o the_o father_n duty_n to_o see_v he_o well_o instruct_v and_o teach_v in_o virtue_n and_o good_a behaviour_n and_o the_o speech_n and_o demeanour_n of_o the_o father_n in_o his_o household_n or_o family_n be_v to_o his_o child_n as_o law_n in_o a_o city_n to_o the_o citizen_n and_o do_v assure_o enter_v into_o the_o mind_n of_o child_n with_o far_o great_a force_n than_o man_n will_v think_v which_o make_v xenocrates_n to_o say_v that_o the_o stop_n of_o young_a man_n ear_n be_v more_o needful_a than_o the_o arm_n of_o their_o body_n against_o the_o stroke_n of_o their_o enemy_n because_o the_o danger_n be_v great_a which_o they_o incur_v by_o hear_v a_o unseemly_a speech_n special_o from_o their_o parent_n mouth_n then_o that_o which_o they_o may_v fear_v by_o fight_v with_o their_o enemy_n the_o father_n therefore_o must_v be_v very_o circumspect_a that_o his_o son_n hear_v he_o not_o speak_v any_o word_n undecent_a or_o dishonest_a for_o nature_n with_o a_o certain_a hide_a virtue_n persuade_v youth_n succeed_v a_o weltaught_a childhood_n to_o bear_v great_a reverence_n and_o respect_n to_o the_o grave_n and_o ripe_a year_n of_o their_o parent_n and_o of_o all_o age_a person_n who_o even_o in_o the_o first_o view_n represent_v unto_o they_o virtue_n prudence_n and_o all_o good_a and_o grave_a behaviour_n and_o such_o be_v he_o to_o show_v himself_o to_o his_o son_n as_o even_o in_o his_o countenance_n gesture_n and_o word_n he_o may_v as_o in_o a_o table_n behold_v therein_o the_o law_n of_o honest_a life_n and_o that_o his_o action_n may_v be_v in_o all_o point_n to_o his_o son_n a_o pattern_n and_o example_n of_o civil_a conversation_n and_o virtuous_a live_n it_o be_v a_o very_a necessary_a and_o important_a instruction_n and_o advertisement_n say_v m._n dormer_n that_o you_o have_v last_o mention_v for_o father_n to_o observe_v but_o i_o will_v feign_v that_o you_o shall_v tell_v i_o whether_o you_o have_v not_o see_v as_o i_o oftentimes_o have_v do_v wicked_a child_n beget_v of_o very_o good_a and_o honest_a parent_n yes_o quoth_v i_o often_o than_o i_o will_v neither_o can_v it_o be_v deny_v but_o that_o as_o there_o be_v some_o young_a man_n by_o nature_n and_o through_o their_o happy_a constellation_n whole_o bend_v to_o virtuous_a and_o honest_a condition_n so_o be_v there_o other_o natural_o dispose_v to_o vice_n and_o lewd_a behaviour_n yet_o since_o it_o seem_v not_o credible_a that_o of_o good_a parent_n ill_a child_n shall_v come_v and_o that_o diligent_a care_n in_o bring_v they_o up_o shall_v not_o pluck_v up_o if_o not_o whole_o yet_o in_o part_n those_o evil_a weed_n which_o choke_v the_o good_a seed_n so_o as_o the_o fruit_n may_v in_o due_a season_n be_v expect_v seek_v to_o find_v the_o reason_n hereof_o i_o have_v call_v to_o mind_n the_o precept_n of_o hypocrates_n give_v to_o the_o physician_n to_o wit_n that_o it_o be_v not_o sufficient_a for_o recovery_n of_o the_o sick_a patient_n that_o the_o physician_n be_v well_o dispose_v to_o cure_v he_o and_o employ_v his_o diligence_n to_o that_o effect_n but_o that_o other_o thing_n must_v likewise_o concur_v for_o the_o recovery_n of_o his_o health_n as_o the_o care_n and_o solicitude_n of_o such_o as_o watch_v and_o tend_v he_o with_o other_o exterior_a thing_n for_o even_o so_o i_o think_v that_o to_o the_o good_a proof_n of_o a_o young_a man_n beside_o the_o example_n of_o the_o
