but_o only_o this_o that_o virtue_n be_v to_o love_n and_o choose_v and_o do_v that_o which_o have_v a_o natural_a good_a in_o it_o which_o be_v good_a to_o ourselves_o or_o other_o that_o vice_n be_v to_o love_v and_o choose_v and_o do_v that_o which_o have_v some_o natural_a evil_n in_o it_o or_o which_o be_v hurtful_a to_o ourselves_o or_o other_o as_o for_o instance_n charity_n which_o be_v one_o of_o the_o most_o excellent_a virtue_n of_o the_o christian_a life_n consist_v in_o do_v every_o thing_n which_o be_v for_o the_o good_a of_o man_n in_o feed_v the_o hungry_a clothe_v the_o naked_a relieve_v the_o injure_v and_o oppress_v the_o fatherless_a and_o the_o widow_n in_o direct_v advise_v assist_v comfort_a man_n in_o difficulty_n and_o distress_n in_o forgive_a injury_n conceal_v fault_n judge_v charitable_o and_o in_o all_o such_o other_o act_n of_o goodness_n as_o be_v great_o for_o the_o benefit_n of_o mankind_n whereas_o the_o contrary_a vice_n do_v all_o the_o contrary_a evil_n and_o mischief_n to_o the_o great_a hurt_n and_o injury_n of_o man_n and_o whoever_o consider_v this_o must_v confess_v that_o moral_a good_a and_o evil_a be_v as_o real_a a_o thing_n as_o natural_a good_a and_o evil_a be_v and_o i_o suppose_v no_o man_n who_o have_v his_o sense_n about_o he_o will_v deny_v that_o there_o be_v such_o a_o thing_n as_o natural_a good_a and_o evil_a as_o for_o instance_n pain_n and_o pleasure_n and_o then_o his_o same_o sense_n will_v in_o abundance_n of_o instance_n tell_v he_o the_o essential_a difference_n between_o moral_a good_a and_o evil_a on_o the_o other_o hand_n the_o true_a and_o only_a reason_n why_o man_n so_o vast_o differ_v in_o their_o notion_n of_o moral_a good_a and_o evil_a be_v because_o in_o many_o instance_n they_o be_v not_o agree_v what_o natural_a good_a and_o evil_a be_v some_o man_n call_v nothing_o good_a or_o evil_n but_o what_o be_v good_a or_o evil_n to_o their_o body_n such_o as_o pain_n and_o pleasure_n and_o the_o cause_n and_o instrument_n of_o they_o health_n and_o sickness_n riches_n and_o poverty_n and_o the_o like_a other_o think_v and_o with_o much_o great_a reason_n that_o we_o shall_v take_v our_o soul_n into_o the_o account_n too_o that_o whatever_o be_v for_o the_o ease_n and_o pleasure_n of_o our_o mind_n whatever_o adorn_v and_o perfect_v a_o reasonable_a nature_n be_v the_o law_n of_o the_o gospel_n do_v either_o command_v what_o be_v for_o the_o good_a and_o happiness_n of_o mankind_n of_o every_o private_a man_n and_o of_o public_a community_n or_o forbid_v happy_a as_o he_o can_v be_v here_o it_o will_v prevent_v a_o great_a many_o michief_n which_o other_o man_n fall_v into_o and_o enable_v he_o to_o bear_v those_o patient_o which_o it_o can_v prevent_v this_o be_v the_o first_o step_n of_o god_n govern_v mankind_n that_o natural_a provision_n he_o have_v make_v for_o the_o punishment_n of_o wickedness_n and_o the_o reward_n of_o virtue_n for_o i_o suppose_v all_o man_n will_v grant_v that_o this_o be_v god_n own_o act_n for_o none_o but_o he_o who_o make_v man_n can_v so_o fit_a and_o temper_v his_o nature_n to_o the_o law_n of_o virtue_n as_o to_o make_v his_o duty_n his_o natural_a reward_n and_o happiness_n and_o his_o sin_n his_o punishment_n this_o be_v admirable_a and_o stupendous_a wisdom_n and_o the_o most_o effectual_a mean_n for_o the_o good_a government_n of_o the_o world_n and_o which_o be_v necessary_a to_o make_v all_o other_o act_n of_o government_n successful_a but_o this_o be_v so_o useful_a a_o argument_n that_o i_o can_v dismiss_v it_o without_o some_o far_a remark_n and_o observation_n 1._o god_n have_v by_o this_o mean_v take_v care_n that_o virtue_n shall_v never_o be_v whole_o unrewarded_a nor_o sin_n unpunished_a for_o they_o be_v a_o reward_n and_o punishment_n to_o themselves_o and_o such_o reward_n and_o punishment_n as_o be_v found_v in_o the_o nature_n of_o thing_n be_v unavoidable_a 2._o this_o in_o ordinary_a case_n supersede_v the_o necessity_n of_o god_n interpose_v by_o a_o immediate_a providence_n to_o reward_v good_a man_n and_o to_o punish_v the_o wicked_a these_o natural_a reward_n and_o punishment_n when_o there_o be_v no_o occasion_n for_o more_o signal_n example_n of_o god_n goodness_n and_o justice_n will_v serve_v for_o this_o world_n for_o this_o reason_n indeed_o some_o man_n conclude_v that_o god_n take_v no_o notice_n of_o humane_a affair_n because_o he_o do_v not_o always_o visible_o interpose_v for_o the_o punishment_n of_o wickedness_n and_o the_o defence_n and_o protection_n of_o virtuous_a man_n but_o god_n have_v make_v a_o stand_a provision_n for_o this_o in_o the_o nature_n of_o thing_n and_o that_o will_v serve_v the_o ordinary_a end_n of_o providence_n and_o when_o he_o see_v occasion_n for_o it_o he_o can_v soon_o rectify_v any_o great_a disorder_n by_o a_o more_o immediate_a hand_n this_o be_v most_o agreeable_a to_o the_o wisdom_n and_o to_o the_o majesty_n of_o providence_n thus_o god_n govern_v the_o inanimate_a world_n the_o heaven_n and_o the_o earth_n and_o all_o the_o creature_n in_o it_o by_o keep_v this_o great_a machine_n in_o that_o regular_a and_o uniform_a motion_n which_o he_o at_o first_o give_v it_o and_o suffer_v all_o creature_n to_o follow_v the_o tendency_n of_o their_o own_o nature_n except_v such_o case_n as_o require_v some_o extraordinary_a and_o preternatural_a event_n as_o when_o god_n think_v fit_a to_o work_v miracle_n for_o the_o conviction_n of_o infidel_n and_o to_o give_v authority_n to_o his_o prophet_n or_o to_o punish_v a_o wicked_a world_n with_o drought_n or_o famine_n or_o pestilence_n to_o infect_v their_o air_n and_o to_o make_v the_o earth_n iron_n and_o the_o heaven_n brass_n the_o less_o the_o divine_a providence_n deviate_v from_o the_o nature_n of_o thing_n while_o the_o world_n be_v well_o and_o wise_o govern_v the_o more_o admirable_a be_v his_o wisdom_n who_o have_v so_o contrive_v the_o world_n that_o he_o can_v govern_v all_o creature_n by_o the_o spring_n and_o principle_n of_o their_o own_o nature_n 3._o thus_o these_o natural_a reward_n and_o punishment_n give_v a_o sacred_a and_o venerable_a authority_n to_o the_o divine_a law_n for_o this_o prove_v that_o they_o be_v not_o arbitrary_a constitution_n which_o depend_v whole_o upon_o the_o will_n and_o pleasure_n of_o god_n who_o might_n if_o he_o have_v please_v have_v make_v virtue_n vice_n and_o vice_n virtue_n as_o some_o man_n venture_v to_o talk_v with_o equal_a ignorance_n impudence_n and_o profaneness_n for_o unless_o god_n have_v make_v we_o other_o creature_n than_o we_o now_o be_v he_o can_v have_v give_v we_o no_o other_o law_n unless_o he_o can_v have_v give_v we_o law_n destructive_a to_o our_o nature_n and_o happiness_n for_o none_o but_o a_o virtuous_a man_n can_v be_v happy_a and_o sin_n must_v make_v we_o miserable_a 4._o nay_o these_o natural_a reward_n and_o punishment_n be_v a_o glorious_a justification_n of_o all_o the_o other_o act_n of_o god_n providence_n for_o the_o reward_v good_a man_n and_o punish_v the_o wicked_a for_o this_o be_v to_o dispense_v reward_n and_o punishment_n according_a to_o the_o nature_n and_o desert_n of_o thing_n which_o become_v the_o just_a governor_n of_o the_o world_n for_o happiness_n be_v the_o natural_a effect_n and_o reward_n of_o virtue_n and_o wickedness_n of_o vice_n and_o therefore_o to_o reward_v good_a man_n and_o punish_v the_o wicked_a be_v to_o reward_v man_n for_o make_v themselves_o happy_a and_o to_o punish_v they_o for_o make_v themselves_o miserable_a to_o encourage_v they_o to_o make_v themselves_o as_o good_a and_o happy_a as_o possible_o they_o can_v by_o reward_v they_o with_o new_a addition_n of_o happiness_n and_o to_o restrain_v and_o terrify_v they_o from_o make_v themselves_o wicked_a and_o miserable_a by_o threaten_v and_o inflict_v more_o severe_a punishment_n on_o they_o and_o can_v there_o possible_o be_v a_o more_o gracious_a government_n than_o this_o what_o have_v any_o man_n to_o quarrel_v at_o in_o it_o unless_o it_o be_v that_o god_n be_v so_o great_o and_o passionate_o concern_v that_o we_o shall_v be_v happy_a for_o this_o be_v the_o apparent_a intention_n and_o design_n of_o his_o providence_n in_o this_o world_n both_o in_o reward_v good_a man_n and_o punish_v the_o wicked_a 5._o nay_o further_o these_o natural_a reward_n and_o punishment_n which_o god_n have_v enterwoven_v in_o the_o nature_n of_o thing_n whereby_o he_o have_v make_v virtue_n a_o reward_n and_o wickedness_n a_o punishment_n to_o itself_o be_v not_o only_o a_o particular_a instance_n of_o god_n providence_n in_o that_o natural_a provision_n he_o have_v make_v for_o the_o reward_n of_o virtue_n and_o the_o punishment_n of_o vice_n but_o be_v a_o natural_a earnest_n and_o pledge_n of_o all_o other_o act_n of_o providence_n which_o be_v necessary_a to_o this_o end_n when_o god_n make_v virtue_n and_o vice_n the_o natural_a cause_n and_o instrument_n of_o our_o happiness_n and_o misery_n it_o be_v certain_a that_o he_o intend_v that_o good_a man_n shall_v be_v happy_a and_o the_o wicked_a miserable_a now_o do_v god_n ever_o intend_v thing_n by_o half_n will_v he_o not_o certain_o effect_v what_o he_o intend_v these_o natural_a reward_n and_o punishment_n be_v one_o
secular_a affair_n will_v furnish_v we_o with_o frequent_a opportunity_n of_o exercise_v great_a and_o excellent_a virtue_n yet_o the_o world_n be_v apt_a to_o gain_v too_o much_o upon_o we_o by_o our_o constant_a conversation_n with_o it_o and_o as_o flesh_n and_o sense_n prevail_v so_o the_o spirit_n lose_v and_o if_o this_o do_v not_o defile_v the_o soul_n with_o worldly_a lust_n yet_o it_o take_v we_o off_o very_o much_o from_o the_o frequent_a and_o vigorous_a act_n of_o a_o divine_a life_n which_o be_v the_o true_a happiness_n of_o a_o reasonable_a soul_n but_o then_o these_o mortal_a body_n be_v expose_v to_o great_a want_n and_o suffering_n bad_a man_n be_v injurious_a and_o meekness_n and_o patience_n and_o such_o tame_a and_o gentle_a virtue_n encourage_v their_o injury_n nay_o true_a piety_n and_o religion_n itself_o may_v be_v the_o cause_n and_o reason_n of_o our_o suffering_n and_o when_o the_o body_n suffer_v the_o soul_n suffer_v with_o it_o and_o this_o stifle_v the_o present_a pleasure_n and_o satisfaction_n of_o virtue_n and_o nothing_o can_v support_v the_o spirit_n of_o good_a man_n under_o such_o suffering_n but_o the_o future_a expectation_n of_o great_a reward_n so_o that_o in_o this_o state_n virtue_n alone_o be_v not_o a_o sufficient_a reward_n to_o itself_o for_o either_o its_o pleasure_n be_v but_o faint_a and_o languid_a or_o its_o suffering_n overbalance_n its_o pleasure_n but_o yet_o if_o we_o will_v but_o suppose_v a_o good_a man_n remove_v into_o such_o a_o state_n where_o virtue_n and_o piety_n will_v have_v its_o free_a unrestrained_a undisturbed_a exercise_n and_o can_v produce_v its_o natural_a effect_n without_o any_o hindrance_n and_o interruption_n than_o it_o be_v demonstrable_a that_o piety_n and_o virtue_n must_v make_v man_n happy_a and_o this_o secure_v the_o happiness_n of_o good_a man_n when_o ever_o they_o remove_v out_o of_o these_o body_n and_o out_o of_o this_o world_n when_o these_o body_n and_o this_o world_n can_v no_o long_o tempt_v or_o disturb_v we_o with_o its_o pain_n or_o pleasure_n when_o the_o care_n and_o business_n of_o this_o world_n can_v no_o long_o divert_v and_o employ_v our_o thought_n when_o bad_a man_n can_v no_o long_o injure_v we_o when_o our_o soul_n be_v set_v at_o liberty_n to_o exercise_v all_o their_o rational_a power_n when_o we_o remove_v into_o a_o world_n of_o spirit_n and_o converse_v only_o with_o spiritual_a object_n which_o will_v as_o strong_o affect_v our_o mind_n as_o the_o thing_n of_o this_o world_n do_v our_o sense_n than_o virtue_n will_v and_o must_v be_v a_o reward_n unto_o itself_o then_o the_o pleasure_n of_o wisdom_n and_o knowledge_n and_o divine_a passion_n will_v be_v ravish_v and_o transport_v thus_o on_o the_o other_o hand_n the_o nature_n of_o vice_n be_v such_o as_o to_o make_v a_o reasonable_a creature_n miserable_a but_o yet_o a_o great_a prosperity_n in_o this_o world_n and_o a_o confluence_n of_o all_o sensual_a enjoyment_n may_v at_o present_a palliate_v and_o dissemble_v or_o suspend_v these_o malignant_a influence_n of_o a_o vicious_a nature_n may_v make_v man_n unsensible_a of_o the_o want_n of_o true_a rational_a and_o divine_a pleasure_n or_o of_o the_o pain_n and_o disturbance_n of_o sinful_a passion_n may_v bind_v up_o our_o reason_n and_o conscience_n and_o give_v such_o a_o empire_n and_o predominancy_n to_o sense_n that_o we_o can_v neither_o understand_v nor_o relish_v any_o other_o pleasure_n but_o those_o of_o the_o body_n and_o think_v ourselves_o complete_o happy_a while_o we_o have_v these_o but_o if_o we_o will_v suppose_v such_o man_n strip_v of_o flesh_n and_o sense_n thrust_v out_o of_o these_o body_n and_o out_o of_o this_o world_n and_o there_o be_v a_o end_n of_o their_o sensual_a happiness_n and_o a_o sensualized_a soul_n be_v capable_a of_o no_o other_o and_o when_o all_o other_o object_n be_v remove_v and_o such_o sinful_a and_o distemper_a mind_n be_v bring_v acquaint_v with_o themselves_o when_o the_o virtue_n of_o these_o opiate_n be_v spend_v and_o the_o soul_n recover_v its_o sense_n again_o than_o every_o vicious_a passion_n prove_v a_o fury_n then_o gild_n and_o shame_n and_o fear_n and_o despair_n and_o rage_a remorse_n act_v their_o several_a tragedy_n in_o such_o a_o miserable_a soul_n this_o be_v the_o true_a nature_n of_o sinful_a and_o disorder_a passion_n and_o thus_o they_o must_v do_v when_o they_o act_v like_o themselves_o and_o thus_o they_o will_v do_v when_o they_o be_v let_v loose_a upon_o we_o in_o the_o other_o world_n so_o that_o the_o natural_a reward_n and_o punishment_n of_o virtue_n and_o vice_n that_o virtue_n in_o its_o own_o nature_n be_v the_o life_n the_o happiness_n vice_n the_o death_n and_o misery_n of_o a_o reasonable_a soul_n do_v necessary_o prove_v that_o if_o good_a and_o bad_a man_n remove_v out_o of_o this_o world_n of_o sense_n into_o a_o world_n of_o spirit_n piety_n and_o virtue_n must_v make_v man_n happy_a and_o vice_n miserable_a and_o we_o may_v take_v it_o for_o grant_v that_o god_n will_v reward_v a_o happy_a and_o punish_v a_o miserable_a nature_n 7._o these_o natural_a reward_n and_o punishment_n of_o virtue_n and_o vice_n be_v a_o great_a instrument_n of_o providence_n as_o they_o be_v a_o most_o effectual_a antidote_n and_o remedy_n against_o superstition_n which_o corrupt_v the_o manner_n of_o man_n and_o debauch_n the_o world_n by_o superstition_n i_o mean_v all_o those_o hypocritical_a art_n of_o appease_v god_n and_o procure_v his_o favour_n without_o obey_v his_o law_n or_o reform_v our_o sin_n infinite_a such_o superstition_n have_v be_v invent_v by_o heathen_n by_o jew_n by_o christian_n themselves_o especial_o by_o the_o church_n of_o rome_n which_o abound_v with_o they_o now_o these_o superstition_n do_v not_o only_o spoil_v all_o religion_n but_o corrupt_a man_n life_n and_o give_v they_o great_a security_n and_o impudence_n in_o sin_v which_o overturn_v the_o good_a government_n of_o the_o world_n for_o while_o man_n persuade_v themselves_o that_o they_o may_v live_v as_o they_o list_v and_o commit_v what_o villainy_n they_o please_v and_o yet_o escape_v the_o wrath_n and_o vengeance_n nay_o obtain_v the_o favour_n of_o god_n both_o in_o this_o world_n and_o in_o the_o next_o it_o set_v they_o free_a from_o all_o law_n and_o government_n and_o leave_v no_o restraint_n on_o they_o but_o what_o the_o law_n of_o man_n and_o the_o rod_n and_o axe_n of_o prince_n lay_v on_o they_o but_o when_o man_n consider_v that_o god_n have_v so_o contrive_v the_o nature_n of_o thing_n that_o virtue_n must_v make_v man_n happy_a and_o vice_n miserable_a they_o can_v imagine_v that_o god_n can_v be_v reconcile_v to_o wicked_a man_n unless_o they_o think_v that_o he_o will_v alter_v the_o nature_n of_o virtue_n and_o vice_n for_o they_o the_o reward_n and_o punishment_n the_o happiness_n and_o misery_n of_o good_a and_o bad_a man_n be_v not_o now_o arbitrary_a thing_n at_o the_o disposal_n of_o god_n arbitrary_a will_n and_o pleasure_n but_o god_n must_v new_o make_v man_n again_o to_o make_v good_a man_n miserable_a and_o bad_a man_n happy_a they_o may_v as_o well_o expect_v ease_n in_o a_o fit_a of_o the_o gout_n or_o stone_n or_o health_n in_o the_o paroxysm_n of_o a_o favour_n as_o that_o a_o wicked_a and_o corrupt_a nature_n shall_v receive_v the_o reward_n of_o religion_n and_o virtue_n this_o be_v the_o first_o evidence_n we_o have_v of_o a_o divine_a providence_n necessary_a be_v a_o natural_a institution_n of_o it_o man_n be_v a_o sociable_a creature_n who_o can_v live_v alone_o but_o must_v unite_v into_o society_n and_o the_o experience_n of_o mankind_n prove_v that_o society_n can_v be_v preserve_v without_o civil_a government_n to_o maintain_v the_o right_n and_o to_o restrain_v the_o violence_n and_o injury_n of_o man_n that_o if_o god_n have_v not_o by_o any_o direct_a and_o immediate_a institution_n set_v up_o any_o

definition_n of_o a_o law_n of_o nature_n than_o what_o the_o nature_n of_o thing_n make_v necessary_a to_o the_o happiness_n of_o mankind_n and_o of_o humane_a society_n for_o if_o this_o be_v not_o the_o divine_a providence_n to_o govern_v the_o world_n by_o humane_a method_n and_o by_o the_o ministry_n of_o his_o creature_n as_o far_o as_o it_o can_v be_v so_o govern_v and_o not_o to_o interpose_v by_o a_o immediate_a power_n but_o in_o urgent_a necessity_n where_o humane_a method_n fail_v 3._o and_o this_o we_o have_v plain_a proof_n of_o also_o that_o god_n do_v interpose_v by_o a_o secret_a and_o invisible_a providence_n to_o supply_v the_o defect_n or_o correct_v the_o miscarriage_n of_o public_a government_n or_o to_o reward_n and_o punish_v man_n and_o take_v care_n of_o his_o creature_n in_o such_o instance_n as_o fall_v not_o under_o the_o cognizance_n of_o humane_a government_n i_o confess_v it_o be_v no_o easy_a matter_n in_o ordinary_a case_n to_o prove_v the_o interposal_n of_o the_o divine_a providence_n because_o god_n bring_v great_a thing_n to_o pass_v by_o natural_a cause_n unseen_a accident_n or_o the_o ministry_n of_o man_n while_o they_o seem_v to_o follow_v their_o own_o nature_n and_o to_o pursue_v their_o private_a interest_n design_n and_o passion_n for_o in_o all_o such_o event_n we_o know_v not_o what_o to_o attribute_v to_o god_n and_o what_o to_o creature_n when_o god_n concur_v with_o creature_n by_o a_o secret_a and_o invisible_a influence_n and_o power_n which_o make_v such_o man_n as_o be_v unwilling_a to_o believe_v a_o providence_n to_o ascribe_v all_o to_o creature_n who_o be_v the_o visible_a actor_n in_o it_o and_o therefore_o to_o satisfy_v you_o that_o god_n do_v by_o a_o wise_a and_o just_a though_o many_o old_a world_n by_o a_o deluge_n of_o water_n and_o preserve_v noah_n and_o his_o family_n in_o the_o ark_n that_o he_o destroy_v sodom_n and_o gomorrah_n with_o fire_n from_o heaven_n and_o send_v his_o angel_n to_o fetch_v lot_n out_o of_o it_o there_o we_o read_v all_o the_o miracle_n god_n wrought_v in_o egypt_n by_o the_o hand_n of_o moses_n for_o the_o punishment_n of_o the_o egyptians_n and_o the_o deliverance_n of_o israel_n how_o god_n overthrow_v pharaoh_n and_o his_o host_n in_o the_o red_a sea_n which_o divide_v its_o water_n and_o give_v a_o safe_a passage_n to_o the_o army_n faith_n for_o this_o destroy_v all_o commerce_n and_o intercourse_n if_o i_o may_v so_o speak_v between_o god_n and_o man_n if_o man_n may_v be_v allow_v to_o disbelieve_v a_o revelation_n which_o have_v all_o the_o evidence_n and_o proof_n that_o any_o revelation_n can_v have_v it_o make_v it_o impossible_a for_o god_n to_o reveal_v his_o will_n to_o the_o world_n at_o least_o to_o give_v we_o such_o a_o stand_a revelation_n as_o may_v be_v a_o certain_a rule_n of_o faith_n to_o all_o age_n and_o beside_o this_o infidelity_n be_v not_o owe_v to_o want_v of_o evidence_n but_o to_o a_o evil_a temper_n of_o mind_n which_o be_v prepossess_v with_o such_o vicious_a lust_n and_o passion_n as_o will_v not_o suffer_v man_n to_o believe_v thus_o our_o saviour_n tell_v we_o that_o man_n love_v darkness_n rather_o than_o light_v because_o their_o deed_n be_v evil_a and_o tell_v the_o pharisee_n how_o can_v you_o believe_v who_o receive_v honour_v one_o of_o another_o and_o seek_v not_o that_o their_o infidelity_n be_v no_o security_n to_o they_o for_o whether_o they_o will_v believe_v heaven_n and_o hell_n or_o not_o if_o there_o be_v a_o heaven_n they_o shall_v lose_v it_o and_o if_o there_o be_v a_o hell_n they_o shall_v fall_v into_o it_o for_o their_o infidelity_n and_o deserve_o too_o if_o their_o infidelity_n be_v cause_v by_o the_o fault_n of_o their_o will_n not_o by_o a_o want_n of_o evidence_n and_o therefore_o no_o man_n can_v be_v secure_a in_o his_o infidelity_n till_o he_o be_v secure_a that_o his_o infidelity_n be_v not_o wilful_a that_o there_o be_v no_o confident_a it_o will_v cure_v all_o the_o infidelity_n in_o the_o world_n let_v man_n renounce_v all_o their_o sinful_a lust_n and_o vice_n which_o make_v they_o infamous_a to_o the_o world_n let_v they_o obey_v the_o law_n of_o the_o gospel_n which_o be_v for_o the_o good_a of_o humane_a society_n for_o the_o good_a of_o their_o family_n which_o be_v the_o ornament_n and_o perfection_n of_o humane_a nature_n whether_o the_o gospel_n be_v true_a or_o not_o and_o then_o if_o they_o can_v disbelieve_v the_o gospel_n it_o be_v not_o because_o their_o deed_n be_v evil_a not_o because_o they_o have_v some_o lust_n or_o other_o to_o serve_v by_o their_o infidelity_n and_o this_o will_v make_v their_o infidelity_n very_o excusable_a but_o i_o know_v not_o of_o such_o a_o infidel_n as_o this_o in_o the_o world_n it_o be_v apparent_a and_o visible_a that_o the_o infidel_n of_o our_o day_n promise_v themselves_o security_n in_o their_o vice_n from_o their_o infidelity_n they_o laugh_v at_o heaven_n and_o hell_n because_o they_o will_v not_o be_v at_o the_o pain_n to_o go_v to_o heaven_n and_o be_v afraid_a of_o hell_n whatever_o wit_n and_o reason_n they_o pretend_v to_o all_o mankind_n and_o reverence_n for_o god_n and_o the_o fear_n of_o future_a judgement_n and_o man_n may_v sin_v away_o this_o in_o private_a as_o well_o as_o in_o public_a when_o once_o they_o conquer_v a_o think_v all_o this_o very_a innocent_a that_o to_o lust_n after_o a_o beautiful_a woman_n and_o please_v themselves_o with_o amorous_a and_o wanton_a imagination_n be_v no_o crime_n if_o they_o do_v this_o be_v the_o true_a way_n of_o reconcile_a st._n paul_n and_o st._n james_n i_o shall_v not_o at_o present_a dispute_n but_o it_o grant_v all_o that_o i_o desire_v that_o notwithstanding_o our_o be_v justify_v by_o faith_n we_o shall_v be_v judge_v by_o our_o work_n for_o whether_o a_o man_n or_o his_o faith_n be_v judge_v and_o justify_v by_o work_n i_o think_v be_v the_o same_o thing_n for_o if_o the_o man_n must_v be_v justify_v by_o faith_n and_o his_o faith_n justify_v by_o work_n i_o doubt_v the_o man_n can_v be_v justify_v without_o work_n unless_o he_o can_v be_v justify_v by_o a_o unjustified_a faith_n before_o fâ—ith_n can_v justify_v the_o man_n it_o must_v be_v justify_v itself_o and_o faith_n must_v be_v justify_v by_o work_n and_o what_o this_o differ_v from_o shall_v be_v judge_v by_o our_o work_n for_o most_o of_o the_o notion_n of_o justification_n by_o faith_n in_o opposition_n to_o our_o justification_n by_o work_n be_v very_o reconcilable_a with_o this_o doctrine_n of_o be_v judge_v by_o our_o work_n and_o those_o that_o be_v not_o be_v not_o so_o plain_a and_o certain_a as_o it_o be_v that_o we_o shall_v be_v judge_v by_o our_o work_n 3._o however_o since_o this_o be_v so_o plain_o express_v in_o scripture_n that_o there_o be_v no_o avoid_v it_o nor_o any_o other_o possible_a sense_n to_o be_v make_v of_o it_o whatever_o our_o notion_n of_o justification_n be_v it_o be_v much_o the_o safe_a way_n to_o believe_v and_o expect_v that_o we_o shall_v be_v judge_v according_a to_o our_o work_n that_o if_o we_o live_v wicked_o we_o shall_v certain_o be_v condemn_v at_o that_o day_n and_o though_o we_o shall_v be_v acquit_v and_o final_o absolve_v by_o the_o mercy_n of_o god_n and_o the_o merit_n of_o christ_n yet_o not_o without_o holiness_n not_o without_o good_a work_n not_o without_o partake_v of_o the_o divine_a nature_n and_o be_v conform_v to_o christ_n our_o head_n to_o entertain_v any_o other_o hope_n will_v undo_v we_o for_o ever_o for_o we_o shall_v be_v very_o ill_o prepare_v to_o give_v a_o account_n of_o our_o life_n and_o action_n when_o our_o lord_n come_v to_o call_v we_o to_o a_o account_n if_o we_o can_v possess_v ourselves_o with_o such_o notion_n of_o justification_n as_o deliver_v we_o from_o the_o fear_n of_o judgement_n if_o we_o can_v persuade_v ourselves_o that_o we_o shall_v not_o be_v judge_v according_a to_o our_o work_n but_o by_o the_o merit_n of_o christ_n that_o we_o shall_v not_o receive_v the_o thing_n do_v in_o the_o body_n whether_o good_a or_o evil_n but_o shall_v receive_v the_o purchase_n of_o christ_n obedience_n and_o righteousness_n without_o regard_n to_o our_o own_o these_o be_v the_o dangerous_a conclusion_n which_o some_o man_n draw_v from_o their_o mistake_a notion_n of_o justification_n and_o this_o be_v the_o great_a danger_n of_o such_o mistake_n while_o man_n acknowledge_v the_o grace_n of_o god_n and_o the_o merit_n of_o christ_n in_o the_o justification_n of_o sinner_n and_o believe_v that_o they_o shall_v be_v judge_v according_a to_o their_o work_n whatever_o other_o dispute_n there_o may_v be_v there_o be_v no_o danger_n in_o they_o but_o if_o man_n by_o some_o uncertain_a reason_n can_v persuade_v themselves_o
future_a judgement_n make_v this_o necessary_a 3_o dly_z let_v we_o then_o consider_v how_o this_o matter_n may_v be_v reconcile_v that_o we_o be_v save_v by_o grace_n and_o justify_v by_o faith_n in_o christ_n and_o yet_o must_v be_v judge_v by_o our_o work_n and_o this_o be_v very_o easy_o do_v for_o we_o shall_v be_v judge_v by_o our_o work_n according_a to_o the_o gracious_a term_n of_o the_o gospel_n the_o faith_n of_o christ_n be_v never_o intend_v to_o give_v we_o a_o liberty_n in_o sin_v or_o to_o excuse_v we_o from_o the_o necessity_n of_o a_o holy_a life_n and_o as_o far_o as_o the_o necessity_n of_o holiness_n be_v reconcilable_a with_o the_o grace_n of_o the_o gospel_n so_o far_o our_o be_v judge_v by_o our_o work_n be_v reconcilable_a with_o our_o be_v save_v by_o grace_n upon_o the_o same_o term_n that_o the_o gospel_n promise_v pardon_n and_o forgiveness_n we_o shall_v be_v pardon_v at_o the_o day_n of_o judgement_n whatever_o the_o gospel_n promise_v to_o reward_v shall_v be_v reward_v at_o the_o day_n of_o judgement_n and_o thus_o we_o be_v judge_v by_o grace_n and_o by_o work_n too_o this_o be_v easy_o understand_v by_o those_o who_o know_v any_o thing_n of_o favourable_a allowance_n of_o the_o gospel_n and_o then_o bad_a man_n receive_v the_o just_a desert_n of_o their_o sin_n and_o good_a man_n receive_v those_o reward_n not_o which_o they_o have_v merit_v but_o which_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n and_o the_o merit_n of_o christ_n have_v prepare_v and_o purchase_v for_o they_o this_o be_v a_o plain_a account_n how_o christian_n may_v be_v judge_v by_o their_o work_n and_o yet_o save_v by_o grace_n and_o by_o faith_n in_o christ_n and_o the_o righteousness_n and_o equity_n of_o the_o last_o judgement_n seem_v to_o entitle_v heathen_n themselves_o tho'_o they_o have_v no_o covenant_n right_o to_o it_o to_o some_o degree_n of_o this_o grace_n for_o i_o can_v think_v that_o god_n in_o judge_v the_o world_n will_v deal_v more_o rigorous_o and_o severe_o with_o heathen_n than_o he_o will_v with_o christian_n that_o he_o will_v demand_v most_o where_o he_o have_v give_v least_o which_o be_v contrary_a to_o our_o saviour_n rule_n of_o judgement_n and_o therefore_o i_o can_v but_o hope_n that_o christ_n in_o judge_v of_o their_o work_n will_v make_v the_o same_o favourable_a allowance_n to_o they_o which_o the_o gospel_n make_v to_o those_o who_o do_v believe_v in_o christ_n that_o be_v to_o say_v that_o he_o will_v allow_v of_o the_o repentance_n of_o a_o heathen_a if_o it_o be_v sincere_a and_o hearty_a and_o do_v reform_v his_o life_n as_o well_o as_o of_o the_o repentance_n of_o a_o christian_a that_o he_o will_v overlook_v the_o same_o defect_n and_o imperfection_n in_o the_o good_a action_n of_o heathen_n who_o live_v virtuous_a life_n who_o worship_v the_o one_o true_a god_n and_o observe_v the_o natural_a rule_n of_o sobriety_n justice_n and_o righteousness_n that_o he_o will_v in_o the_o action_n of_o christian_n that_o if_o any_o heathen_a shall_v be_v find_v equal_o virtuous_a with_o the_o mean_a christian_n who_o shall_v be_v final_o save_v that_o heathen_a at_o least_o will_v not_o be_v damn_v and_o indeed_o will_v seem_v to_o have_v reason_n to_o complain_v of_o unequal_a usage_n if_o he_o shall_v st._n paul_n tell_v we_o both_o with_o respect_n to_o jew_n and_o heathen_n as_o well_o as_o christian_n that_o god_n will_v judge_v the_o secret_n of_o man_n by_o christ_n jesus_n according_a to_o the_o gospel_n and_o if_o the_o gospel_n be_v the_o rule_n of_o judge_v all_o man_n action_n they_o must_v be_v all_o equal_o judge_v with_o respect_n to_o the_o good_a or_o evil_a of_o their_o action_n and_o be_v judge_v as_o the_o gospel_n judge_n i_o grant_v the_o heathen_n have_v no_o promise_n of_o pardon_n upon_o their_o repentance_n but_o yet_o all_o mankind_n believe_v so_o well_o of_o the_o goodness_n and_o mercy_n of_o god_n that_o they_o hope_v for_o pardon_n upon_o their_o repentance_n thus_o we_o find_v the_o ninivites_n do_v and_o they_o have_v it_o and_o indeed_o it_o be_v this_o persuasion_n that_o teach_v they_o to_o pray_v to_o god_n and_o to_o offer_v have_v treasure_n in_o heaven_n 19_o mat._n 21._o what_o be_v the_o meaning_n of_o this_o do_v the_o gospel_n preach_v merit_n to_o we_o must_v we_o merit_v forgiveness_n by_o forgive_a must_v we_o purchase_v heaven_n with_o our_o money_n every_o body_n see_v that_o this_o can_v be_v no_o purchase_n because_o there_o be_v no_o proportion_n in_o the_o value_n but_o though_o charity_n can_v merit_v our_o pardon_n yet_o it_o deserve_v some_o favour_n to_o be_v show_v it_o and_o god_n will_v be_v merciful_a to_o those_o who_o show_v mercy_n though_o our_o alm_n and_o work_n of_o charity_n can_v merit_v heaven_n yet_o they_o make_v we_o friend_n as_o our_o saviour_n speak_v and_o such_o friend_n as_o will_v receive_v we_o into_o everlasting_a habitation_n they_o will_v make_v god_n and_o christ_n our_o friend_n who_o will_v bestow_v heaven_n on_o we_o not_o as_o the_o merit_n of_o our_o work_n but_o out_o of_o grace_n and_o favour_n which_o such_o act_n of_o charity_n deserve_v this_o be_v a_o plain_a account_n why_o our_o saviour_n in_o the_o last_o judgement_n take_v notice_n of_o no_o other_o work_n but_o act_n of_o charity_n and_o show_v we_o how_o we_o may_v be_v judge_v by_o our_o work_n and_o pardon_v and_o reward_v by_o grace_n and_o if_o this_o will_v not_o convince_v we_o of_o the_o necessity_n of_o charity_n it_o be_v in_o vain_a to_o urge_v any_o other_o argument_n 2_o dly_z another_o rule_n and_o that_o a_o very_a righteous_a rule_n of_o judgement_n be_v that_o god_n will_v judge_v we_o according_a to_o our_o receipt_n as_o our_o saviour_n express_o tell_v we_o to_o whosoever_o much_o be_v give_v of_o they_o shall_v much_o be_v require_v and_o to_o who_o man_n have_v commit_v much_o of_o he_o they_o will_v ask_v the_o more_o 12_o luke_n 48._o as_o for_o the_o righteousness_n and_o equity_n of_o this_o our_o saviour_n appeal_n to_o the_o practice_n of_o mankind_n they_o think_v it_o very_o reasonable_a to_o ask_v the_o more_o of_o glorious_a privilege_n they_o enjoy_v by_o be_v christian_n this_o be_v gospel-grace_n this_o be_v the_o purchase_n of_o christ_n blood_n but_o not_o to_o enter_v into_o this_o dispute_n which_o i_o have_v say_v enough_o of_o already_o certain_o these_o man_n be_v mistake_v and_o these_o vain_a hope_n will_v deceive_v they_o if_o our_o saviour_n rule_n be_v true_a that_o to_o who_o much_o be_v give_v of_o they_o shall_v be_v much_o require_v for_o have_v not_o god_n give_v more_o to_o we_o than_o he_o have_v to_o the_o rest_n of_o the_o world_n and_o be_v that_o a_o reason_n why_o he_o shall_v ask_v less_o let_v we_o brief_o consider_v what_o god_n have_v do_v more_o for_o we_o than_o he_o have_v do_v for_o the_o rest_n of_o the_o world_n and_o see_v whether_o what_o god_n have_v do_v more_o for_o we_o do_v excuse_v we_o from_o any_o part_n of_o our_o duty_n or_o rather_o whether_o it_o do_v not_o exact_v a_o more_o perfect_a virtue_n from_o we_o the_o gospel_n of_o christ_n have_v give_v we_o a_o more_o perfect_a knowledge_n of_o the_o will_n of_o god_n and_o of_o our_o duty_n to_o he_o nay_o have_v give_v we_o a_o more_o perfect_a law_n and_o rule_n of_o life_n have_v in_o many_o instance_n advance_v our_o duty_n above_o what_o the_o law_n of_o nature_n or_o the_o law_n of_o moses_n require_v at_o least_o above_o what_o the_o generality_n of_o man_n think_v they_o do_v require_v now_o be_v this_o a_o reason_n why_o god_n shall_v excuse_v we_o from_o do_v our_o duty_n because_o we_o know_v it_o better_o than_o other_o man_n or_o why_o god_n shall_v expect_v less_o from_o we_o than_o from_o other_o man_n because_o we_o know_v more_o this_o be_v direct_o contrary_a to_o what_o our_o saviour_n tell_v we_o that_o servant_n which_o know_v his_o lord_n will_n be_v beat_v with_o few_o stripe_n 12_o luke_n 47_o 48._o this_o seem_v a_o hard_a say_n that_o he_o which_o know_v not_o shall_v be_v beat_v at_o all_o but_o our_o saviour_n do_v not_o by_o this_o understand_v a_o total_a ignorance_n but_o a_o imperfect_a knowledge_n which_o will_v excuse_v man_n from_o such_o part_n of_o their_o duty_n as_o they_o be_v ignorant_a of_o if_o this_o ignorance_n be_v not_o their_o own_o fault_n but_o the_o more_o we_o know_v the_o more_o be_v our_o duty_n enlarge_v and_o therefore_o as_o our_o knowledge_n increase_v our_o account_n must_v increase_v with_o it_o and_o that_o will_v increase_v our_o punishment_n if_o we_o know_v the_o will_n of_o god_n and_o disobey_v it_o be_v there_o any_o use_n of_o knowledge_n but_o to_o direct_v our_o life_n and_o can_v god_n then_o intend_v any_o thing_n in_o reveal_v his_o will_n to_o we_o but_o that_o we_o shall_v obey_v it_o the_o jew_n have_v these_o vain_a conceit_n they_o boast_v in_o circumcision_n
