of_o the_o one_o law_n but_o it_o be_v not_o a_o difficult_a thing_n to_o answer_v to_o this_o objection_n indeed_o it_o must_v be_v confess_v if_o you_o consider_v the_o thing_n by_o themselves_o and_o compare_v the_o one_o with_o the_o other_o by_o a_o mutual_a relation_n there_o seem_v not_o to_o be_v any_o difference_n between_o the_o righteousness_n of_o christ_n and_o of_o the_o law_n because_o there_o be_v nothing_o in_o the_o law_n so_o holy_a and_o perfect_a but_o it_o appear_v as_o evident_a in_o the_o life_n of_o christ_n but_o if_o you_o consider_v the_o efficacy_n and_o manner_n of_o work_v which_o the_o righteousness_n of_o christ_n and_o of_o the_o law_n exercise_n in_o other_o if_o you_o consider_v the_o effect_n and_o end_n of_o both_o there_o be_v a_o great_a difference_n for_o though_o christ_n be_v no_o otherwise_o just_a in_o himself_o than_o the_o law_n itself_o be_v holy_a and_o just_a but_o yet_o this_o which_o be_v call_v the_o righteousness_n of_o christ_n act_n in_o we_o much_o otherwise_o than_o that_o which_o be_v call_v the_o righteousness_n of_o the_o law_n so_o that_o nothing_o seem_v more_o unlike_a or_o more_o contrary_a the_o difference_n between_o the_o righteousness_n of_o the_o law_n and_o the_o gospel_n first_o as_o touch_v the_o law_n what_o the_o nature_n virtue_n and_o law_n efficacy_n thereof_o be_v it_o be_v unknown_a to_o no_o man_n to_o wit_n that_o it_o be_v of_o itself_o a_o holy_a and_o perfect_a rule_n and_o mistress_n to_o teach_v how_o to_o lead_v the_o life_n make_v for_o this_o purpose_n by_o the_o most_o holy_a god_n that_o creature_n may_v certain_o know_v what_o they_o shall_v fly_v and_o what_o they_o shall_v follow_v as_o it_o contain_v in_o itself_o the_o very_a rule_n of_o all_o perfection_n in_o all_o respect_v complete_a so_o it_o require_v perfect_a obedience_n in_o all_o respect_n and_o upon_o all_o account_n upon_o this_o condition_n that_o he_o that_o do_v these_o thing_n shall_v live_v in_o they_o but_o on_o the_o contrary_a he_o that_o do_v otherwise_o and_o abide_v not_o in_o all_o the_o law_n pronounce_v a_o curse_n against_o he_o and_o inflict_v the_o vengeance_n of_o death_n and_o heap_n up_o anger_n and_o indignation_n upon_o he_o for_o by_o the_o law_n the_o wrath_n of_o god_n be_v declare_v from_o heaven_n be_v just_o kindle_v against_o all_o man_n that_o be_v wicked_a and_o unjust_a upon_o any_o account_n whereby_o it_o come_v to_o pass_v that_o the_o law_n indeed_o be_v itself_o holy_a and_o good_a be_v not_o give_v for_o this_o that_o it_o shall_v bring_v destruction_n but_o salvation_n but_o yet_o the_o same_o be_v hinder_v by_o the_o infirmity_n of_o our_o flesh_n it_o can_v but_o kill_v we_o but_o can_v at_o all_o save_v we_o natural_o have_v a_o enmity_n against_o god_n so_o it_o can_v avoid_v be_v contrary_a to_o his_o sacred_a will_n and_o divine_a institution_n and_o hence_o break_v forth_o so_o many_o and_o so_o great_a calamity_n that_o fall_v upon_o this_o sinful_a nature_n of_o we_o hence_o so_o many_o proof_n of_o the_o divine_a indignation_n and_o anger_n hence_o also_o that_o dreadful_a and_o unavoidable_a necessity_n of_o die_v which_o when_o it_o pass_v promiscuous_o through_o all_o age_n and_o kindred_n which_o none_o of_o the_o most_o holy_a man_n can_v ever_o drive_v away_o from_o themselves_o very_o that_o one_o thing_n prove_v we_o all_o to_o be_v guilty_a of_o unrighteousness_n and_o that_o there_o be_v not_o any_o perfection_n of_o righteousness_n in_o our_o most_o righteous_a work_n for_o do_v if_o the_o wage_n of_o sin_n be_v death_n it_o can_v be_v that_o there_o shall_v be_v any_o extinction_n of_o life_n there_o where_o no_o unrighteousness_n be_v see_v it_o be_v consider_v out_o of_o christ._n now_o let_v we_o again_o turn_v our_o eye_n unto_o christ_n and_o consider_v what_o his_o righteousness_n without_o the_o law_n work_v in_o we_o and_o here_o first_o of_o all_o a_o wonderful_a and_o most_o manifest_a difference_n between_o the_o christ._n law_n and_o christ_n present_v itself_o unto_o we_o for_o see_v the_o law_n as_o have_v be_v say_v can_v give_v no_o life_n according_a to_o the_o rigour_n of_o its_o justice_n but_o only_o to_o perfect_a man_n therefore_o it_o come_v to_o pass_v that_o because_o it_o find_v nothing_o perfect_a in_o we_o it_o be_v hinder_v through_o the_o infirmity_n of_o our_o flesh_n can_v give_v no_o help_n nor_o work_v any_o thing_n in_o we_o but_o wrath_n therefore_o be_v repulse_v by_o the_o law_n judgement_n be_v most_o just_a can_v or_o ought_v against_o righteousness_n favour_v those_o who_o have_v forsake_v their_o duty_n have_v turn_v aside_o to_o unrighteousness_n for_o if_o the_o law_n of_o god_n according_a to_o the_o nature_n of_o righteousness_n can_v avoid_v condemn_v of_o those_o that_o be_v guilty_a of_o wickedness_n some_o perhaps_o may_v ask_v what_o way_n christ_n who_o do_v not_o any_o thing_n but_o what_o be_v most_o righteous_a can_v procure_v salvation_n to_o those_o without_o the_o violation_n of_o his_o righteousness_n who_o the_o law_n of_o righteousness_n the_o we_o help_n of_o work_n join_v with_o it_o if_o upon_o the_o account_n of_o work_n whether_o before_o work_n or_o after_o work_n or_o in_o the_o very_a work_n but_o if_o by_o faith_n only_o without_o work_n hence_o arise_v a_o threefold_a question_n 1._o what_o then_o do_v good_a work_n avail_v 2._o what_o faith_n that_o be_v and_o of_o what_o sort_n it_o be_v which_o be_v say_v to_o justify_v 3._o who_o this_o faith_n justify_v for_o they_o must_v be_v either_o sinner_n or_o righteous_a if_o question_n sinner_n they_o be_v either_o penitent_a or_o stubborn_a if_o you_o say_v draw_v their_o life_n and_o sap_n from_o the_o root_n of_o the_o tree_n but_o not_o the_o root_n thereby_o from_o they_o just_o so_o external_a action_n proceed_v from_o faith_n as_o the_o root_n which_o if_o they_o be_v good_a they_o evidence_n the_o root_n to_o be_v sound_a and_o lively_a and_o this_o be_v all_o they_o do_v but_o they_o communicate_v no_o life_n thereunto_o and_o this_o life_n and_o virtue_n of_o faith_n be_v not_o one_o but_o twofold_a and_o it_o act_v faith_n partly_o in_o heaven_n and_o partly_o in_o earth_n if_o you_o ask_v what_o it_o do_v among_o man_n upon_o earth_n it_o do_v good_a to_o its_o neighbour_n work_v by_o love_n but_o before_o god_n in_o heaven_n it_o justify_v the_o ungodly_a not_o by_o love_n but_o by_o the_o son_n of_o god_n who_o it_o bring_v forth_o to_o the_o view_n of_o a_o human_a eye_n yet_o with_o god_n faith_n have_v a_o far_o different_a operation_n for_o it_o only_o without_o any_o reliance_n upon_o work_n or_o assistance_n of_o charity_n but_o trust_v to_o the_o naked_a promise_n of_o god_n and_o the_o dignity_n of_o the_o mediator_n climb_v up_o to_o heaven_n and_o get_v access_n into_o the_o presence_n of_o god_n where_o it_o do_v great_a and_o wonderful_a thing_n combat_v with_o the_o judgement_n to_o come_v fight_v against_o the_o terror_n of_o death_n satan_n and_o hell_n plead_v the_o cause_n of_o a_o sinner_n obtain_v his_o pardon_n absolve_n and_o justify_v he_o from_o the_o accusation_n of_o a_o guilty_a conscience_n take_v away_o all_o iniquity_n reconcile_v god_n to_o the_o sinner_n but_o be_v admit_v or_o rather_o draw_v to_o the_o marriage-feast_n by_o the_o grace_n of_o christ_n only_o how_o then_o can_v charity_n abound_v wedding-garment_n with_o the_o work_n of_o the_o law_n be_v true_o call_v the_o wedding-garment_n howbeit_o i_o know_v there_o be_v some_o great_a divine_n that_o rather_o approve_v of_o this_o interpretation_n that_o the_o wedding-garment_n here_o mention_v shall_v signify_v charity_n but_o when_o i_o consider_v exact_o the_o circumstance_n of_o the_o parable_n if_o without_o offend_v those_o that_o have_v better_a judgement_n i_o may_v free_o that_o i_o may_v be_v find_v in_o he_o not_o have_v my_o own_o righteousness_n which_o be_v of_o the_o law_n but_o that_o which_o be_v through_o the_o say_v of_o christ_n the_o righteousness_n which_o be_v of_o god_n by_o faith_n and_o if_o we_o be_v not_o blind_a we_o all_o see_v evident_a proof_n of_o the_o same_o not_o only_o by_o word_n but_o by_o the_o example_n of_o the_o israelite_n wherefore_o if_o none_o be_v entertain_v in_o this_o marriage-feast_n but_o they_o that_o have_v on_o the_o wedding-garment_n and_o if_o israel_n that_o follow_v after_o righteousness_n be_v say_v to_o be_v reject_v upon_o no_o other_o account_n but_o because_o they_o seek_v it_o by_o work_n and_o not_o by_o faith_n can_v it_o be_v doubt_v that_o this_o nuptial_a ornament_n consist_v not_o in_o work_n but_o in_o the_o faith_n of_o christ_n i_o know_v there_o be_v many_o kind_n of_o garment_n as_o also_o there_o be_v many_o difference_n of_o thing_n thing_n of_o man_n and_o of_o place_n but_o all_o thing_n agree_v not_o with_o all_o place_n nor_o with_o all_o kingdom_n one_o thing_n be_v suitable_a to_o a_o court_n of_o justice_n another_o thing_n to_o a_o banquet_n judge_n sit_v on_o the_o bench_n and_o guest_n at_o a_o marriage_n feast_n do_v not_o only_o differ_v in_o the_o frame_n of_o their_o spirit_n but_o also_o in_o their_o outward_a garb._n a_o suitableness_n of_o thing_n place_n and_o time_n shall_v be_v observe_v the_o law_n have_v its_o own_o gospel_n kingdom_n and_o christ_n also_o have_v he_o and_o both_o have_v their_o own_o inhabitant_n as_o the_o kingdom_n of_o the_o law_n receive_v none_o but_o the_o righteous_a so_o the_o kingdom_n of_o christ_n reject_v none_o though_o they_o be_v wicked_a if_o they_o be_v bring_v to_o repentance_n by_o believe_v and_o though_o both_o kingdom_n belong_v to_o god_n and_o be_v under_o his_o dominion_n yet_o the_o manner_n of_o administration_n of_o both_o kingdom_n be_v not_o the_o same_o for_o in_o the_o dominion_n of_o the_o law_n god_n be_v please_v to_o manifest_v his_o righteousness_n but_o the_o kingdom_n of_o christ_n be_v the_o gift_n of_o grace_n and_o mercy_n and_o as_o by_o the_o free_a gift_n of_o god_n it_o be_v offer_v to_o all_o that_o believe_v so_o it_o receive_v none_o but_o such_o as_o be_v glad_a free_o and_o willing_o to_o embrace_v the_o grace_n offer_v and_o for_o the_o same_o reason_n chief_o this_o kingdom_n of_o christ_n be_v by_o a_o very_a fit_a similitude_n compare_v to_o a_o marriage_n feast_n and_o a_o wedding_n garment_n and_o not_o without_o cause_n for_o if_o in_o a_o marriage_n feast_v all_o thing_n abound_v with_o mirth_n and_o joy_n how_o much_o more_o shall_v we_o rejoice_v and_o be_v glad_a in_o christ_n by_o who_o procurement_n we_o obtain_v the_o manifold_a riches_n of_o everlasting_a salvation_n and_o glory_n therefore_o what_o remain_v but_o that_o we_o shall_v with_o thankful_a heart_n glad_o receive_v these_o great_a benefit_n of_o our_o
