it_o clear_v what_o be_v the_o right_a channel_n in_o which_o our_o service_n shall_v run_v it_o be_v in_o the_o channel_n of_o the_o covenant_n our_o obedience_n be_v to_o be_v direct_v not_o to_o god_n abstract_o consider_v but_o to_o god_n as_o our_o god_n i_o be_o the_o lord_n thy_o god_n say_v he_o and_o thy_o god_n by_o covenant_n so_o the_o expression_n be_v deut._n 28._o 58._o that_o thou_o mâ—â—st_v fear_v this_o glorious_a and_o fearful_a name_n the_o lord_n thy_o god._n this_o make_v our_o service_n and_o worship_v sweet_a and_o kind_o and_o without_o this_o relation_n there_o consist_v well_o together_o 3._o it_o clear_v what_o be_v the_o right_a and_o great_a motive_n of_o obedience_n to_o wit_n the_o benefit_n of_o redemption_n love_n and_o thankfulness_n upon_o that_o account_n constrain_a to_o the_o perform_n of_o these_o duty_n that_o be_v command_v that_o they_o may_v be_v do_v willing_o and_o in_o a_o cheerful_a manner_n second_o it_o may_v be_v ask_v why_o the_o second_o commandment_n and_o the_o four_o commandment_n have_v reason_n press_v obedience_n annex_v to_o they_o which_o none_o of_o the_o other_o have_v at_o least_o express_o set_v down_o by_o the_o lord_n answ_n this_o may_v be_v a_o reason_n because_o all_o the_o other_o commandment_n be_v by_o the_o law_n of_o nature_n determine_v in_o man_n conscience_n and_o the_o sin_n against_o the_o inward_a worship_n due_a to_o god_n for_o the_o first_o commandment_n be_v moral-natural_a and_o can_v never_o be_v alter_v and_o have_v as_o much_o impression_n on_o a_o natural_a conscience_n as_o any_o and_o therefore_o according_a to_o this_o ground_n need_v no_o reason_n three_o it_o may_v be_v observe_v also_o that_o some_o commandment_n have_v promise_n add_v to_o they_o which_o other_o have_v not_o not_o that_o any_o commandment_n want_v imply_v encouragement_n but_o in_o some_o they_o be_v express_v as_o in_o the_o second_o he_o show_v mercy_n to_o thousand_o etc._n etc._n easy_o condescend_v unto_o therefore_o god_n to_o counterbalance_v the_o difficulty_n that_o accompany_v the_o obedience_n of_o these_o two_o commandment_n have_v add_v promise_n to_o they_o the_o more_o to_o encourage_v and_o stir_v up_o to_o the_o obedience_n of_o they_o the_o four_o thing_n we_o will_v take_v notice_n of_o be_v that_o some_o commandment_n have_v threaten_n express_v in_o they_o which_o other_o have_v not_o as_o the_o second_o and_o the_o three_o not_o that_o any_o commandment_n want_v imply_v threaten_n but_o the_o reason_n be_v because_o man_n ordinary_o count_v light_n of_o the_o breach_n of_o these_o two_o commandment_n if_o they_o be_v as_o they_o think_v honest_a at_o the_o heart_n though_o they_o be_v very_o negligent_a and_o careless_a in_o many_o outward_a thing_n and_o though_o in_o the_o manner_n of_o worship_n they_o be_v very_o slight_a and_o perfunctorious_a yet_o if_o it_o be_v to_o the_o true_a god_n they_o think_v the_o less_o of_o it_o and_o so_o also_o man_n be_v give_v to_o count_v very_o light_a of_o reverend_a use_v god_n holy_a name_n therefore_o he_o have_v put_v a_o threaten_n to_o both_o these_o commandment_n to_o make_v man_n know_v he_o will_v not_o so_o easy_o pass_v they_o as_o man_n ofttimes_o imagine_v and_o that_o all_o these_o three_o
not_o sincere_a but_o in_o show_v only_o 3._o when_o they_o be_v defective_a as_o to_o the_o measure_n of_o knowledge_n faith_n etc._n etc._n which_o we_o shall_v be_v at_o 4._o when_o they_o may_v see_v how_o often_o this_o commandment_n be_v break_v 1._o that_o we_o may_v the_o better_o understand_v the_o breach_n of_o this_o commandment_n we_o will_v first_o take_v a_o view_n of_o god_n excellency_n and_o attribute_n and_o see_v how_o we_o sin_n against_o all_o these_o for_o we_o shall_v walk_v worthy_a of_o god_n col._n 1._o 10_o and_o here_o you_o may_v observe_v that_o his_o infinite_a wisdom_n be_v wrong_v by_o not_o submit_v to_o he_o or_o not_o take_v direction_n from_o he_o his_o power_n by_o not_o employ_v he_o his_o grace_n by_o not_o trust_v he_o or_o abuse_v it_o to_o wantonness_n his_o omniscience_n by_o wish_v he_o see_v not_o not_o some_o thing_n hide_v they_o from_o man_n and_o not_o fear_v he_o counterfeit_v in_o his_o service_n etc._n etc._n so_o be_v his_o justice_n wrong_v by_o expect_v mercy_n without_o make_v use_n of_o a_o sacrifice_n not_o fear_v his_o threaten_n not_o scare_v at_o sin_n but_o hazard_v on_o his_o wrath_n and_o the_o like_a may_v be_v instance_a in_o all_o the_o rest_n of_o his_o attribute_n which_o be_v all_o sin_v against_o either_o by_o ignorance_n or_o by_o omission_n of_o something_o they_o call_v for_o or_o by_o the_o commission_n of_o something_o unbecoming_a they_o 2._o consider_v god_n in_o his_o relation_n to_o we_o how_o often_o be_v he_o sin_v against_o as_o a_o father_n how_o be_v his_o kindness_n abuse_v and_o he_o not_o reverence_v as_o creator_n of_o who_o we_o have_v our_o be_v yea_o he_o be_v kick_v against_o and_o we_o live_v not_o to_o he_o from_o who_o and_o by_o who_o we_o live_v he_o be_v a_o husband_n and_o yet_o we_o go_v a_o whore_v from_o he_o and_o prove_v unfaithful_a in_o all_o our_o tie_n to_o he_o he_o be_v a_o redeemer_n of_o his_o people_n and_o a_o master_n and_o lord_n of_o all_o but_o what_o fear_n love_n subjection_n get_v he_o from_o we_o notwithstanding_o of_o all_o these_o relation_n 3._o consider_v god_n work_n for_o we_o about_o we_o and_o to_o we_o of_o creation_n providence_n and_o redemption_n beside_o his_o particular_a dispensation_n both_o of_o mercy_n and_o judgement_n all_o which_o call_v for_o something_o suitable_a from_o we_o and_o yet_o every_o one_o of_o they_o be_v more_o way_n than_o one_o slight_v by_o attribute_v whether_o good_a or_o evil_n to_o chance_n luck_n or_o fortune_n by_o unthankfulness_n to_o he_o and_o abuse_v of_o what_o he_o give_v and_o by_o not_o study_v these_o work_n so_o as_o to_o admire_v and_o love_v he_o who_o be_v the_o worker_n 4._o consider_v our_o obligation_n to_o god_n in_o all_o the_o part_n of_o our_o covenant_n with_o he_o seal_v by_o baptism_n and_o the_o lord_n supper_n sure_o we_o shall_v study_v to_o be_v like_o all_o these_o covenant-relation_n and_o to_o answer_v these_o obligation_n but_o alace_o how_o shameful_o unanswerable_a be_v we_o to_o they_o all_o 5._o consider_v his_o will_n reveal_v in_o his_o word_n and_o see_v how_o far_o short_a we_o be_v in_o perform_v it_o last_o consider_v what_o care_n there_o be_v of_o use_v the_o mean_n that_o may_v bring_v we_o near_o to_o and_o abstain_v from_o those_o thing_n that_o draw_v we_o away_o from_o god_n such_o as_o sinful_a confederacy_n evil_a company_n light_n and_o unsound_a book_n travel_v needless_o to_o strange_a place_n etc._n etc._n all_o which_o and_o whatever_o else_o take_v the_o heart_n off_o god_n be_v breach_n of_o this_o commandment_n next_o we_o shall_v insist_v more_o particular_o upon_o some_o manifest_a breach_n opposite_a to_o the_o great_a and_o principal_a scope_n of_o this_o conceive_v no_o not_o in_o heaven_n but_o while_o we_o be_v upon_o earth_n we_o see_v but_o dark_o as_o through_o a_o glass_n and_o our_o knowledge_n of_o he_o be_v rather_o faith_n then_o sight_n or_o they_o be_v such_o thing_n which_o be_v conceivable_a but_o god_n have_v not_o think_v good_a to_o reveal_v they_o unto_o man_n as_o when_o he_o will_v end_v the_o world_n when_o he_o will_v take_v every_o man_n from_o this_o life_n who_o be_v particular_o elect_v etc._n etc._n to_o be_v ignorant_a of_o these_o be_v no_o sin_n it_o be_v a_o duty_n not_o to_o seek_v to_o know_v they_o yea_o curiosity_n in_o these_o be_v sinful_a ignorance_n here_o be_v call_v rather_o a_o nescience_n then_o ignorance_n which_o imply_v a_o privation_n of_o knowledge_n which_o man_n ought_v to_o have_v or_o 2._o these_o thing_n concern_v god_n be_v such_o as_o not_o only_o in_o themselves_o may_v be_v know_v but_o such_o as_o we_o ought_v to_o know_v because_o they_o be_v reveal_v to_o we_o ignorance_n of_o these_o be_v sinful_a as_o 1._o be_v a_o disconformity_n to_o that_o knowledge_n and_o holiness_n after_o which_o god_n create_v we_o 2._o a_o fruit_n of_o original_a sin_n 3._o a_o cause_n of_o many_o sin_n 4._o a_o disconformity_n to_o the_o law_n which_o require_v we_o so_o to_o know_v and_o acknowledge_v god_n as_o he_o have_v reveal_v himself_o to_o we_o and_o that_o in_o his_o essence_n in_o the_o trinity_n of_o person_n in_o his_o attribute_n covenant_n work_n of_o creation_n and_o redemption_n and_o in_o his_o relation_n to_o we_o and_o that_o we_o shall_v so_o know_v he_o that_o we_o may_v thereby_o know_v ourselves_o also_o and_o this_o be_v that_o great_a duty_n call_v for_o in_o this_o commandment_n that_o we_o may_v know_v he_o and_o his_o will_n incapacitate_v they_o to_o learn_v and_o indeed_o do_v so_o as_o to_o the_o spiritual_a and_o save_v up-taking_a of_o the_o matter_n of_o god_n till_o the_o eye_n of_o the_o mind_n be_v open_v by_o the_o power_n of_o grace_n 2._o there_o be_v a_o wilful_a ignorance_n when_o man_n have_v part_n mean_n and_o occasion_n whereby_o they_o may_v attain_v knowledge_n and_o yet_o they_o will_v not_o know_v but_o slight_a and_o despise_v the_o mean_n which_o draw_v often_o a_o judicial_a blindness_n along_o with_o it_o 3._o there_o be_v a_o lazy_a ignorance_n whereby_o some_o do_v not_o wilful_o reject_v the_o mean_n of_o knowledge_n yet_o be_v so_o negligent_a that_o they_o do_v not_o actual_o stir_v themselves_o for_o attain_v of_o knowledge_n now_o though_o there_o be_v a_o difference_n among_o these_o yet_o the_o least_o of_o they_o be_v sinful_a and_o will_v not_o whole_o excuse_v it_o be_v a_o fruit_n of_o original_a sin_n at_o the_o best_a entertain_v by_o our_o own_o neglect_n of_o such_o mean_n as_o may_v have_v more_o remove_v it_o and_o thus_o a_o dull_a wit_n or_o weak_a memory_n can_v no_o more_o simple_o excuse_v than_o other_o gross_a discomformity_n to_o the_o law_n in_o our_o nature_n appear_v in_o some_o more_o than_o other_o which_o follow_v upon_o original_a sin_n in_o sum_n man_n may_v be_v three_o way_n guilty_a of_o the_o breach_n of_o this_o law_n in_o respect_n of_o ignorance_n 1._o as_o to_o the_o object_n matter_n whereof_o they_o be_v ignorant_a which_o may_v be_v less_o or_o more_o according_a as_o less_o or_o more_o of_o that_o be_v know_v which_o we_o shall_v know_v concern_v god_n and_o which_o he_o have_v reveal_v and_o this_o be_v especial_o to_o be_v understand_v of_o the_o substantial_a thing_n more_o necessary_a to_o be_v know_v there_o be_v a_o great_a difference_n betwixt_o these_o and_o other_o
chaste_a indeed_o but_o chast-like_a as_o caesar_n say_v his_o wife_n behove_v noâ—_n only_o to_o abstain_v from_o all_o dishonesty_n but_o from_o all_o suspicious_a carriage_n even_o so_o will_v the_o lord_n have_v his_o people_n carry_v it_o so_o to_o he_o as_o a_o wife_n shall_v carry_v to_o a_o jealous_a husband_n with_o such_o circumspection_n as_o he_o may_v not_o have_v any_o occasion_n of_o suspicion_n jealousy_n here_o imply_v two_o thing_n 1._o a_o facility_n or_o aptness_n as_o it_o be_v to_o suspect_v any_o thing_n which_o may_v look_v like_o a_o give_v that_o to_o any_o other_o which_o be_v due_a to_o god_n so_o a_o husband_n be_v say_v to_o be_v jealous_a when_o he_o be_v apt_a to_o suspect_v want_n of_o love_n in_o his_o wife_n and_o be_v ready_a to_o gather_v from_o every_o circumstance_n her_o inclination_n to_o another_o even_o though_o there_o be_v no_o palpable_o demonstrative_a ground_n of_o it_o thus_o jealousy_n be_v take_v among_o men._n 2._o it_o import_v a_o severe_a indignation_n against_o every_o thing_n which_o give_v ground_n of_o suspicion_n it_o can_v abide_v that_o hence_o jealousy_n be_v call_v the_o rage_n of_o a_o man_n prov._n 6._o 38._o this_o wrong_n will_v not_o be_v endure_v when_o many_o other_o will_v be_v dispense_v with_o any_o thing_n that_o seem_o slight_v he_o or_o incline_v the_o heart_n to_o another_o be_v to_o jealousy_n insufferable_a these_o two_o after_o the_o manner_n of_o man_n as_o many_o other_o thing_n be_v apply_v to_o god_n to_o show_v that_o he_o will_v not_o admit_v that_o which_o be_v suspicious-like_a in_o his_o service_n but_o if_o his_o people_n depart_v from_o he_o in_o deviate_a in_o the_o least_o from_o the_o rule_n give_v he_o will_v be_v provoke_v to_o be_v avenge_v on_o they_o for_o it_o this_o be_v the_o force_n of_o the_o reason_n the_o commination_n or_o threaten_v add_v confirm_v this_o it_o be_v in_o these_o word_n visit_v the_o iniquity_n of_o the_o father_n on_o the_o child_n to_o visit_v here_o be_v to_o punish_v the_o child_n for_o the_o father_n fault_n though_o god_n shall_v seem_v for_o the_o time_n to_o forget_v the_o breach_n of_o this_o command_n and_o not_o to_o take_v notice_n of_o corruption_n introduce_v by_o man_n in_o his_o worship_n yet_o say_v he_o i_o will_v visit_v or_o revenge_v that_o iniquity_n not_o only_o upon_o the_o present_a race_n but_o upon_o the_o follow_a even_o upon_o the_o three_o and_o four_o generation_n for_o clear_v this_o let_v we_o see_v first_o what_o be_v the_o punishment_n here_o threaten_v 2._o on_o who_o it_o be_v upon_o the_o child_n of_o they_o that_o transgress_v this_o command_n 3._o how_o it_o be_v execute_v 4._o why_o the_o lord_n do_v so_o that_o we_o may_v vindicate_v this_o place_n and_o clear_v it_o from_o appearance_n of_o contradiction_n with_o that_o in_o ezekiel_n 18._o where_o it_o be_v say_v the_o son_n shall_v not_o lear_a the_o iniquity_n of_o his_o father_n the_o first_o be_v clear_a first_o by_o consider_v that_o the_o thing_n threaten_v here_o be_v that_o punishment_n which_o the_o breach_n of_o or_o iniquity_n commit_v against_o this_o command_n or_o other_o command_n deserve_v yea_o it_o be_v the_o punishment_n that_o sinful_a parent_n deserve_v he_o visit_v the_o iniquity_n of_o the_o father_n on_o the_o child_n etc._n etc._n but_o that_o which_o the_o which_o be_v to_o restrain_v parent_n from_o the_o sin_n here_o forbid_v because_o by_o such_o sin_n they_o bring_v wrath_n not_o only_o on_o themselves_o but_o on_o their_o posterity_n after_o they_o and_o the_o child_n tooth_n be_v set_v on_o edge_n for_o whether_o the_o judgement_n be_v temporal_a or_o spiritual_a the_o child_n have_v deserve_v they_o and_o can_v say_v they_o be_v wrong_v and_o this_o consideration_n reconcile_v this_o place_n with_o that_o of_o ezekiel_n where_o god_n put_v they_o to_o it_o thus_o none_o innocent_a be_v plague_v but_o you_o be_v plague_v therefore_o say_v he_o read_v your_o own_o sin_n out_o of_o your_o plague_n 2._o consider_v that_o the_o threaten_v against_o child_n of_o such_o parent_n be_v here_o limit_v to_o the_o three_o or_o four_o generation_n
