principatus_fw-la which_o word_n relate_v to_o the_o active_a and_o more_o noble_a part_n of_o government_n according_a whereunto_o monarchy_n be_v describe_v to_o be_v a_o politic_a government_n wherein_o one_o person_n be_v supreme_a and_o chief_a and_o this_o indeed_o be_v the_o usual_a description_n approve_v by_o most_o author_n 2._o but_o that_o description_n which_o be_v more_o expressive_a of_o the_o nature_n of_o monarchy_n may_v be_v logical_o thus_o complete_v of_o the_o prementioned_a cause_n thereof_o monarchy_n be_v a_o politic_a government_n institute_v by_o god_n for_o the_o preservation_n of_o humane_a society_n by_o the_o administration_n and_o exercise_n of_o the_o supreme_a power_n and_o authority_n of_o one_o person_n over_o all_o other_o in_o the_o same_o society_n the_o former_a part_n of_o which_o description_n express_v the_o two_o external_n cause_n of_o monarchy_n the_o latter_a the_o two_o internal_a but_o yet_o the_o externall_n cause_v thereof_o be_v not_o herein_o express_v in_o that_o just_a extent_n and_o latitude_n as_o to_o be_v a_o entire_a and_o adequate_a ground_n of_o all_o the_o part_n of_o our_o ensue_a discourse_n in_o this_o book_n concern_v the_o divine_a right_n of_o monarchy_n for_o monarchy_n do_v not_o only_o derive_v its_o institution_n from_o god_n the_o efficient_a cause_n thereof_o but_o also_o many_o other_o divine_a sanction_n nor_o be_v the_o preservation_n of_o humane_a society_n the_o adequate_a end_n for_o which_o god_n do_v institute_v this_o government_n and_o therefore_o though_o this_o description_n reach_v the_o most_o and_o indeed_o more_o divine_a and_o transcendent_a expression_n of_o monarchy_n then_o be_v record_v by_o any_o author_n that_o i_o have_v read_v upon_o this_o subject_n yet_o lest_o i_o shall_v incur_v the_o guilt_n of_o that_o absurdity_n in_o my_o present_a discourse_n as_o to_o extend_v my_o superstructure_n further_o than_o my_o foundation_n i_o shall_v present_v the_o reader_n with_o another_o description_n which_o shall_v reach_v all_o that_o my_o pen_n do_v aim_n at_o in_o this_o present_a discovery_n of_o the_o nature_n and_o divine_a right_n of_o monarchy_n which_o be_v this_o monarchy_n be_v a_o politic_a government_n institute_v and_o approve_v by_o god_n consist_v in_o the_o prudentiall_a administration_n and_o exercise_n of_o the_o supreme_a power_n and_o authority_n of_o one_o person_n over_o all_o other_o within_o the_o same_o society_n for_o the_o preservation_n of_o peace_n and_o unity_n in_o order_n to_o god_n glory_n the_o king_n honour_n and_o the_o people_n welfare_n which_o description_n i_o conceive_v to_o be_v a_o full_a expression_n of_o all_o the_o part_n and_o cause_n of_o monarchy_n the_o explication_n whereof_o i_o purpose_v to_o be_v the_o entire_a business_n of_o my_o ensue_a discourse_n wherein_o i_o shall_v observe_v the_o same_o method_n express_v in_o this_o present_a description_n 1._o show_v this_o blessing_n of_o monarchy_n to_o derive_v its_o original_a from_o god_n the_o efficient_a cause_n thereof_o and_o that_o the_o holy_a ghost_n have_v also_o honour_v the_o same_o with_o many_o recommendatory_a sanction_n whereby_o to_o evidence_n the_o divine_a right_o thereof_o and_o the_o true_a and_o proper_a distinction_n of_o this_o blessing_n of_o monarchy_n from_o the_o curse_n of_o polarchie_n all_o which_o particular_n i_o have_v design_v for_o the_o five_o first_o chapter_n of_o this_o book_n which_o shall_v declare_v the_o nature_n and_o divine_a right_n of_o monarchy_n in_o its_o moral_a capacity_n as_o it_o be_v ground_v upon_o the_o habit_n of_o prudence_n which_o though_o it_o be_v not_o direct_o a_o moral_a habit_n yet_o be_v the_o fountain_n of_o all_o moral_a act_n wherein_o i_o hope_v the_o reader_n shall_v receive_v satisfaction_n concern_v the_o divine_a right_n of_o monarchy_n in_o relation_n to_o the_o efficient_a and_o formal_a cause_n thereof_o which_o be_v the_o first_o two_o particular_n express_v in_o the_o definition_n of_o monarchy_n 2._o in_o the_o next_o place_n i_o shall_v speak_v of_o this_o blessing_n of_o monarchy_n in_o its_o natural_a capacity_n as_o it_o relate_v to_o that_o supremacy_n which_o do_v pre-eminence_n the_o monarch_n above_o all_o other_o within_o the_o same_o society_n which_o i_o term_v natural_a not_o so_o much_o because_o it_o be_v the_o material_a cause_n and_o ground_n of_o this_o natural_a blessing_n of_o monarchy_n every_o monarch_n derive_v his_o title_n to_o the_o crown_n from_o this_o supremacy_n but_o rather_o because_o supremacy_n itself_o do_v ordinary_o proceed_v from_o a_o
preserve_v our_o own_o may_v destroy_v they_o which_o doctrine_n do_v plain_o legitimate_a rebellion_n by_o the_o law_n of_o nature_n and_o therefore_o to_o prevent_v both_o this_o and_o many_o other_o dangerous_a and_o damnable_a inference_n which_o may_v be_v deduce_v from_o this_o fundamental_a error_n place_v this_o five_o commandment_n under_o a_o wrong_a genus_fw-la of_o the_o moral_a law_n and_o thereby_o put_v a_o wrong_a construction_n upon_o all_o the_o duty_n therein_o prescribe_v i_o shall_v endeavour_v to_o rectify_v this_o epidemical_a error_n by_o twelve_o reason_n or_o argument_n demonstrate_v this_o five_o commandment_n to_o be_v a_o precept_n not_o of_o the_o second_o but_o of_o the_o first_o table_n of_o the_o moral_a law_n whereof_o the_o first_o four_o do_v conclude_v the_o negative_a part_n that_o it_o be_v not_o a_o precept_n of_o the_o second_o table_n the_o latter_a eight_o the_o affirmative_a part_n that_o it_o be_v a_o precept_n of_o the_o first_o table_n the_o negative_a part_n that_o it_o be_v no_o precept_n of_o the_o second_o table_n appear_v 1._o by_o saint_n paul_n exposition_n of_o that_o lesser_a commandment_n whereby_o christ_n divide_v the_o second_o table_n from_o the_o first_o viz._n thou_o shall_v love_v thy_o neighbour_n as_o thyself_o under_o which_o commandment_n say_v the_o apostle_n be_v comprehend_v all_o the_o precept_n of_o the_o second_o table_n relate_v to_o our_o neighbour_n and_o particularise_v they_o mention_n only_o the_o last_o five_o rom._n 13.9_o ob._n you_o will_v say_v though_o he_o specify_v no_o other_o but_o the_o five_o last_o precept_n of_o the_o decalogue_n yet_o he_o intimate_v in_o that_o verse_n that_o some_o other_o commandment_n be_v also_o comprehend_v in_o this_o say_n thou_o shall_v love_v thy_o neighbour_n as_o thyself_o which_o other_o commandment_n must_v needs_o be_v this_o of_o obedience_n to_o parent_n sol._n by_o other_o commandment_n the_o apostle_n do_v not_o mean_v any_o of_o the_o other_o five_o which_o be_v specifical_o distinct_a from_o these_o five_o but_o other_o particular_a branch_n of_o these_o five_o negative_a commandment_n of_o the_o second_o table_n each_o of_o which_o comprehend_v many_o particular_n under_o they_o and_o that_o he_o do_v not_o thereby_o understand_v this_o five_o commandment_n which_o be_v a_o affirmative_a precept_n be_v manifest_a from_o the_o reason_n allege_v by_o the_o apostle_n in_o the_o subsequent_a verse_n show_v why_o and_o how_o this_o love_n of_o our_o neighbour_n be_v the_o fulfil_n of_o the_o law_n of_o the_o second_o table_n for_o say_v he_o love_n work_v no_o ill_a to_o his_o neighbour_n therefore_o be_v love_v the_o fulfil_n of_o the_o law_n ver._n 10._o where_o you_o may_v observe_v that_o all_o the_o duty_n of_o the_o second_o table_n relate_v to_o our_o neighbour_n be_v ground_v primary_o upon_o the_o negative_a effect_n of_o our_o love_n which_o be_v the_o not_o do_v ill_a to_o our_o neighbour_n for_o not_o our_o neighbour_n but_o ourselves_o be_v the_o immediate_a object_n of_o the_o positive_a effect_n of_o our_o love_n and_o so_o the_o precept_n be_v all_o express_v by_o way_n of_o negation_n but_o the_o duty_n of_o the_o five_o commandment_n be_v of_o a_o different_a nature_n and_o consist_v primary_o in_o the_o positive_a effect_n of_o our_o love_n and_o therefore_o this_o precept_n be_v express_v by_o way_n of_o affirmation_n both_o in_o the_o decalogue_n exod._n 20._o and_o by_o saint_n paul_n in_o the_o first_o verse_n of_o this_o chapter_n for_o first_o he_o command_v we_o to_o submit_v ourselves_o to_o high_a power_n that_o be_v to_o perform_v and_o execute_v their_o command_n when_o they_o be_v not_o contrary_a to_o god_n precept_n and_o this_o be_v the_o immediate_a and_o primary_n duty_n of_o this_o five_o commandment_n and_o in_o the_o next_o verse_n he_o prohibit_v all_o resistance_n though_o their_o command_n be_v such_o as_o we_o judge_v to_o be_v contrary_a to_o god_n precept_n and_o this_o be_v the_o consequential_a and_o secondary_a duty_n of_o the_o same_o commandment_n a_o second_o reason_n why_o this_o five_o commandment_n can_v be_v a_o precept_n of_o the_o second_o table_n be_v because_o such_o a_o commandment_n will_v be_v superfluous_a in_o the_o second_o table_n for_o if_o the_o honour_n and_o obedience_n due_a to_o king_n and_o parent_n be_v duty_n of_o the_o second_o table_n than_o they_o shall_v be_v ground_v upon_o such_o a_o love_n as_o be_v inferior_a unto_o and_o to_o be_v measure_v by_o the_o love_n of_o ourselves_o and_o we_o shall_v yield_v our_o obedience_n and_o submission_n to_o their_o command_n only_o when_o we_o judge_v they_o to_o conduce_v unto_o our_o own_o good_a and_o benefit_n whereupon_o it_o will_v follow_v that_o the_o honour_n due_a to_o king_n and_o parent_n shall_v be_v no_o other_o than_o what_o be_v due_a to_o our_o friend_n or_o servant_n or_o any_o other_o neighbour_n for_o nature_n teach_v we_o to_o obey_v and_o execute_v their_o command_n when_o we_o conceive_v they_o to_o conduce_v unto_o our_o own_o advantage_n and_o so_o this_o five_o commandment_n shall_v be_v altogether_o superfluous_a and_o therefore_o can_v be_v a_o precept_n of_o the_o second_o table_n the_o three_o reason_n why_o this_o five_o commandment_n can_v be_v a_o precept_n of_o the_o second_o table_n be_v because_o god_n do_v not_o permit_v we_o to_o accuse_v or_o testify_v against_o our_o parent_n upon_o any_o occasion_n no_o not_o in_o case_n of_o idolatry_n wherein_o we_o be_v not_o to_o pity_v or_o spare_v any_o neighbour_n how_o near_o and_o dear_a soever_o they_o be_v unto_o we_o whether_o it_o be_v brother_n child_n wife_n or_o friend_n but_o be_v to_o accuse_v they_o and_o testify_v against_o they_o and_o to_o execute_v the_o sentence_n of_o death_n upon_o they_o with_o our_o own_o hand_n deut._n 13.6_o 7_o 8_o 9_o 10._o yea_o if_o it_o be_v a_o whole_a city_n that_o be_v guilty_a of_o this_o sin_n it_o be_v to_o be_v destroy_v ver._n 15._o yet_o in_o this_o strict_a charge_n concern_v idolatrous_a neighbour_n of_o so_o near_a relation_n the_o text_n do_v not_o mention_v any_o man_n or_o woman_n who_o have_v the_o relation_n of_o a_o father_n or_o mother_n to_o we_o thereby_o difference_v they_o from_o all_o neighbour_n whatsoever_o and_o solomon_n exposition_n of_o this_o five_o commandment_n make_v this_o more_o clear_a and_o evident_a eccles_n 10.20_o where_o he_o extend_v the_o honour_n and_o reverence_v due_a to_o king_n unto_o the_o very_a thought_n and_o imagination_n of_o the_o heart_n notwithstanding_o they_o be_v both_o fool_n tyrant_n and_o idolater_n for_o when_o solomon_n prohibit_v the_o curse_v of_o the_o king_n yea_o even_o in_o the_o thought_n he_o be_v not_o ignorant_a that_o saul_n have_v be_v a_o tyrant_n himself_o a_o idolater_n and_o that_o his_o son_n rehoboam_n who_o shall_v succeed_v he_o be_v a_o fool._n but_o it_o be_v never_o prohibit_v to_o speak_v or_o think_v evil_a of_o any_o friend_n or_o neighbour_n who_o be_v guilty_a of_o these_o crime_n nay_o we_o be_v command_v to_o accuse_v they_o of_o evil_a ob._n you_o will_v say_v what_o must_v man_n then_o think_v and_o believe_v manifest_a lie_n must_v we_o neither_o say_v nor_o think_v that_o those_o king_n be_v evil_a and_o wicked_a which_o manifest_a themselves_o to_o be_v such_o in_o all_o their_o action_n such_o as_o jeroboam_n ahab_n manasses_n nabuchadnezzar_n who_o the_o scripture_n record_v for_o most_o infamous_a and_o notorious_a sinner_n and_o may_v not_o we_o speak_v or_o think_v that_o for_o which_o we_o have_v the_o warrant_v of_o scripture_n sol._n king_n in_o reference_n to_o their_o duty_n towards_o god_n may_v be_v more_o wicked_a than_o any_o other_o man_n because_o they_o may_v offend_v in_o a_o double_a capacity_n 1._o in_o their_o natural_a as_o man_n and_o professores_fw-la fidei_fw-la by_o transgress_v of_o god_n commandment_n which_o do_v oblige_v they_o equal_o as_o they_o do_v other_o man_n 2._o in_o their_o politic_a as_o god_n deputy_n and_o propugnatores_fw-la fidei_fw-la by_o breach_n of_o that_o trust_n which_o god_n have_v repose_v in_o they_o for_o rule_v and_o judge_v of_o the_o people_n commit_v to_o their_o care_n and_o protection_n according_a to_o justice_n and_o equity_n but_o in_o reference_n to_o their_o duty_n towards_o we_o though_o themselves_o may_v be_v wicked_a yet_o they_o can_v do_v wicked_a thing_n as_o i_o show_v in_o the_o last_o chapter_n that_o be_v they_o can_v inflict_v any_o thing_n upon_o we_o but_o that_o which_o god_n have_v decree_v to_o fall_v upon_o we_o for_o our_o sin_n as_o the_o holy_a ghost_n testify_v of_o pilate_n sentence_n against_o christ_n act_v 4._o so_o that_o the_o evil_n which_o they_o do_v to_o we_o be_v just_a in_o respect_n of_o we_o though_o it_o be_v never_o so_o unjust_o execute_v by_o they_o so_o that_o
