substance_n this_o include_v in_o it_o no_o respect_n to_o and_o much_o less_o any_o conjunction_n with_o any_o other_o thing_n or_o notion_n whatsoever_o but_o on_o the_o contrary_a truth_n goodness_n power_n etc._n etc._n be_v all_o affection_n of_o be_v or_o substance_n and_o so_o connote_v a_o relation_n to_o and_o a_o conjunction_n with_o it_o as_o their_o subject_n so_o that_o to_o give_v you_o the_o same_o thing_n in_o word_n at_o length_n truth_n and_o goodness_n be_v nothing_o else_o but_o be_v or_o substance_n with_o these_o qualification_n or_o be_v and_o substance_n under_o such_o certain_a respect_n formal_o determine_v they_o to_o such_o a_o condition_n viz._n either_o of_o conformity_n to_o the_o understanding_n as_o truth_n determine_v they_o or_o of_o conformity_n to_o the_o will_n as_o goodness_n do_v so_o that_o in_o these_o and_o all_o other_o the_o like_a attribute_n be_v or_o substance_n do_v as_o it_o be_v pass_v from_o their_o absolute_a and_o original_a simplicity_n by_o the_o accession_n of_o the_o forementioned_a perfection_n superad_v to_o they_o and_o then_o in_o the_o three_o and_o last_o place_n for_o the_o comprehensiveness_n of_o be_v or_o substance_n above_o any_o one_o or_o more_o of_o the_o divine_a attribute_n this_o also_o be_v evident_a forasmuch_o as_o it_o run_v through_o and_o contain_v they_o all_o which_o no_o other_o particular_a attribute_n do_v or_o can_v be_v say_v to_o do_v and_o certain_o that_o which_o signify_v be_v in_o the_o whole_a compass_n and_o perfection_n of_o it_o shall_v be_v much_o more_o proper_o applicable_a to_o god_n than_o that_o which_o signify_v be_v only_o under_o some_o certain_a and_o particular_a determination_n of_o it_o as_o every_o one_o of_o his_o attribute_n do_v and_o no_o more_o for_o we_o can_v say_v that_o god_n justice_n mercy_n wisdom_n holiness_n and_o power_n be_v proper_o contain_v under_o and_o formal_o attributable_a to_o his_o truth_n but_o they_o be_v all_o contain_v under_o deducible_a from_o and_o referible_a to_o his_o be_v or_o substance_n so_o that_o it_o may_v proper_o be_v say_v that_o god_n be_v a_o infinite_o true_a wise_a good_a holy_a omnipotent_a omnipresent_v be_v or_o substance_n but_o we_o can_v with_o any_o propriety_n of_o speech_n pitch_n upon_o any_o one_o of_o the_o other_o divine_a attribute_n and_o in_o like_a manner_n affirm_v all_o the_o rest_n of_o that_o one_o as_o to_o say_v that_o god_n be_v a_o infinite_o wise_a good_a eternal_a omnipotent_a omnipresent_v truth_n this_o i_o say_v can_v be_v equal_o say_v for_o though_o the_o thing_n be_v fundamental_o true_a yet_o the_o expression_n be_v neither_o proper_a nor_o natural_a forasmuch_o as_o goodness_n justice_n omnipotence_n omnipresence_n and_o the_o like_a be_v not_o the_o proper_a affection_n of_o truth_n but_o they_o be_v proper_o so_o of_o substance_n or_o be_v and_o moreover_o whereas_o this_o author_n will_v needs_o have_v the_o term_n substance_n essence_n and_o existence_n discard_v and_o the_o term_n truth_n wisdom_n and_o goodness_n put_v in_o their_o room_n when_o we_o speak_v of_o the_o divine_a nature_n i_o desire_v he_o to_o give_v i_o some_o good_a
reason_n why_o he_o pitch_v upon_o truth_n wisdom_n and_o goodness_n rather_o than_o upon_o eternity_n omnipotence_n and_o omnipresence_n for_o these_o in_o their_o proportion_n express_v the_o therefore_o that_o in_o our_o discourse_n of_o god_n essence_n substance_n nature_n and_o the_o like_a be_v so_o far_o from_o be_v necessary_a to_o be_v lay_v aside_o as_o dispose_v our_o mind_n to_o gross_a and_o unfit_a apprehension_n of_o the_o deity_n that_o they_o be_v much_o fit_a to_o express_v and_o guide_v our_o thought_n about_o this_o great_a subject_n than_o truth_n wisdom_n or_o power_n or_o all_o of_o they_o together_o as_o import_v in_o they_o both_o a_o priority_n and_o a_o great_a simplicity_n and_o large_a comprehensiveness_n of_o notion_n than_o belong_v to_o any_o of_o they_o and_o these_o sure_o be_v consideration_n most_o peculiar_o suit_v to_o and_o worthy_a of_o the_o perfection_n of_o the_o divine_a nature_n i_o have_v now_o do_v with_o my_o three_o proposition_n and_o so_o proceed_v to_o the_o four_o and_o last_o viz_o that_o the_o difficulty_n of_o our_o conceive_v right_o of_o the_o deity_n and_o the_o divine_a person_n do_v real_o proceed_v from_o other_o cause_n than_o those_o allege_v by_o this_o author_n i_o shall_v assign_v three_o as_o first_o the_o spirituality_n of_o the_o divine_a nature_n for_o god_n be_v a_o spirit_n joh._n that_o indeed_o not_o at_o all_o for_o we_o can_v have_v no_o knowledge_n of_o a_o spirit_n by_o any_o direct_a apprehension_n or_o intuition_n of_o it_o but_o all_o that_o we_o know_v of_o such_o being_n be_v what_o we_o gather_v by_o inference_n discourse_n and_o ratiocination_n and_o that_o be_v sufficient_a but_o 2._o the_o second_o reason_n of_o our_o short_a and_o imperfect_a notion_n of_o the_o deity_n be_v the_o infinity_o of_o it_o for_o this_o we_o must_v observe_v that_o we_o can_v perfect_o know_v and_o comprehend_v nothing_o but_o as_o it_o be_v represent_v to_o we_o under_o opposite_a to_o the_o thing_n know_v for_o the_o way_n of_o know_v be_v by_o desining_n limit_v and_o determine_v and_o the_o thing_n know_v be_v that_o of_o which_o there_o neither_o be_v nor_o can_v be_v any_o bound_n limit_n definition_n or_o determination_n and_o this_o i_o think_v be_v not_o only_o a_o sufficient_a but_o something_o more_o than_o a_o sufficient_a reason_n why_o we_o stumble_v and_o fail_v when_o we_o will_v either_o have_v or_o give_v a_o distinct_a account_n of_o the_o deity_n 3._o a_o three_o reason_n of_o the_o same_o especial_o with_o reference_n to_o the_o trinity_n of_o person_n belong_v to_o the_o divine_a nature_n be_v the_o utter_a want_n of_o all_o instance_n and_o example_n of_o this_o kind_n for_o when_o a_o long_a and_o constant_a course_n of_o ever_o have_v any_o beginning_n at_o all_o since_o with_o the_o great_a part_n of_o mankind_n what_o appear_v and_o what_o do_v not_o appear_v determine_v what_o can_v and_o what_o can_v be_v in_o as_o the_o best_a reason_n of_o mankind_n have_v pitch_v upon_o as_o the_o fit_a and_o proper_a and_o most_o significant_a to_o express_v these_o great_a thing_n by_o and_o i_o question_v not_o but_o in_o the_o issue_n of_o all_o wise_a man_n will_v find_v that_o it_o be_v not_o the_o defect_n of_o the_o term_n we_o use_v but_o the_o vast_a incomprehensibility_n of_o the_o thing_n we_o apply_v they_o to_o which_o be_v the_o true_a cause_n of_o all_o our_o failure_n as_o to_o a_o clear_a and_o distinct_a apprehension_n and_o declaration_n of_o what_o relate_v to_o the_o godhead_n from_o all_o which_o i_o conclude_v that_o the_o term_n essence_n substance_n nature_n etc._n etc._n have_v have_v nothing_o yet_o object_v against_o they_o but_o that_o they_o may_v still_o claim_v the_o place_n and_o continue_v in_o the_o use_n which_o the_o learned_a man_n the_o christian_a church_n have_v hitherto_o have_v have_v allot_v they_o in_o all_o their_o discourse_n and_o dispute_n about_o the_o divine_a nature_n and_o the_o divine_a person_n which_o be_v confess_o the_o great_a and_o most_o sacred_a mystery_n in_o the_o christian_a religion_n but_o as_o in_o my_o time_n i_o have_v
