his_o own_o eternal_a son_n the_o son_n of_o his_o essence_n and_o delight_n in_o who_o he_o be_v for_o ever_o well_o please_v for_o it_o be_v through_o he_o alone_o that_o we_o have_v access_n to_o the_o father_n who_o our_o sin_n have_v so_o horrible_o incense_v against_o we_o that_o no_o advocate_n in_o heaven_n or_o earth_n less_o great_a and_o less_o dear_a to_o he_o than_o his_o own_o son_n can_v prevail_v with_o he_o to_o be_v reconcile_v to_o we_o upon_o our_o most_o unfeigned_a repentance_n or_o so_o much_o as_o to_o accept_v of_o our_o humble_a supplication_n o_o good_a god_n what_o nature_n together_o with_o which_o all_o bad_a man_n have_v a_o natural_a desire_n to_o sin_n without_o disturbance_n when_o therefore_o their_o conscience_n begin_v to_o clamour_v against_o their_o wickedness_n and_o to_o vex_v and_o persecute_v they_o for_o it_o the_o mercy_n of_o god_n be_v the_o usual_a sanctuary_n they_o fly_v to_o peace_n froward_a conscience_n cry_v they_o god_n be_v a_o most_o gracious_a and_o merciful_a be_v hard_o to_o be_v provoke_v and_o easy_a to_o be_v pacify_v fear_v not_o therefore_o his_o mercy_n be_v infinite_o great_a than_o my_o fault_n and_o i_o be_o ear_n now_o to_o prevent_v such_o presumption_n as_o these_o and_o dash_v they_o quite_o out_o of_o countenance_n there_o be_v no_o consideration_n in_o the_o world_n can_v be_v more_o effectual_a than_o this_o of_o god_n communicate_v his_o mercy_n to_o we_o through_o the_o intercession_n of_o our_o saviour_n for_o if_o notwithstanding_o the_o goodness_n of_o his_o nature_n he_o will_v not_o be_v propitious_a to_o we_o no_o not_o upon_o our_o repentace_n without_o be_v move_v thereunto_o by_o the_o powerful_a intercession_n of_o his_o own_o son_n how_o can_v we_o ever_o expect_v that_o he_o shall_v be_v propitious_a to_o we_o whether_o we_o repent_v or_o no_o be_v it_o likely_a he_o shall_v be_v more_o indulgent_a to_o we_o for_o our_o own_o sake_n than_o he_o be_v for_o his_o son_n sake_n and_o our_o own_o together_o or_o that_o when_o all_o that_o his_o son_n can_v obtain_v for_o we_o be_v to_o receive_v we_o into_o favour_n in_o case_n we_o will_v lay_v down_o our_o arm_n that_o we_o by_o our_o own_o interest_n shall_v prevail_v with_o he_o to_o receive_v we_o while_o we_o persist_v in_o our_o obstinacy_n and_o rebellion_n in_o short_a if_o our_o repentance_n which_o be_v the_o best_a thing_n we_o can_v render_v he_o be_v not_o sufficient_a to_o move_v he_o to_o pardon_v we_o without_o be_v second_v and_o enforce_v with_o the_o powerful_a oratory_n of_o our_o saviour_n intercession_n what_o shall_v move_v he_o when_o we_o have_v neither_o repentance_n nor_o a_o saviour_n to_o intercede_v for_o we_o for_o our_o saviour_n will_v not_o intercede_v for_o we_o unless_o we_o repent_v and_o our_o repentance_n will_v not_o prevail_v for_o we_o unless_o he_o intercede_v what_o hope_n have_v we_o therefore_o while_o we_o continue_v impenitent_a when_o our_o repentance_n itself_o which_o be_v the_o best_a thing_n we_o can_v do_v to_o move_v god_n to_o be_v propitious_a to_o we_o be_v insufficient_a without_o christ_n intercession_n and_o when_o without_o our_o repentance_n christ_n will_v not_o intercede_v for_o we_o and_o if_o the_o tear_n of_o a_o penitent_a suppliant_a will_v not_o prevail_v with_o he_o without_o a_o intercessor_n what_o hope_n be_v there_o that_o the_o affront_n of_o a_o impenitent_a rebel_n shall_v but_o suppose_v we_o may_v reasonable_o presume_v upon_o the_o benignity_n of_o god_n nature_n that_o he_o will_v be_v propitious_a to_o we_o notwithstanding_o our_o impenitence_n yet_o it_o be_v to_o be_v consider_v that_o now_o he_o have_v place_v the_o dispensation_n of_o his_o mercy_n in_o the_o hand_n of_o a_o mediator_n who_o be_v not_o leave_v to_o dispose_v of_o it_o arbitrary_o as_o he_o shall_v think_v fit_a but_o be_v confine_v and_o limit_v to_o dispose_v of_o it_o only_o to_o penitent_a offender_n for_o christ_n trust_n can_v extend_v no_o far_o than_o to_o dispense_v god_n mercy_n to_o we_o upon_o the_o term_n of_o that_o covenant_n of_o which_o he_o be_v mediator_n which_o covenant_n propose_v mercy_n to_o we_o only_o upon_o condition_n of_o our_o repentance_n so_o that_o now_o we_o can_v expect_v no_o mercy_n from_o god_n but_o what_o pass_v through_o the_o hand_n of_o jesus_n our_o mediator_n who_o can_v without_o violate_v his_o trust_n dispense_v the_o mercy_n of_o god_n to_o we_o except_o we_o repent_v and_o amend_v for_o now_o god_n can_v dispense_v his_o mercy_n to_o we_o immediate_o without_o displace_v his_o son_n from_o his_o mediatorship_n and_o his_o son_n can_v dispense_v his_o mercy_n to_o we_o unconditional_o without_o transgress_v the_o bound_n and_o limit_n that_o be_v prescribe_v to_o he_o and_o therefore_o since_o god_n have_v restrain_v himself_o to_o dispense_v his_o mercy_n only_o through_o his_o son_n and_o restrain_v his_o son_n to_o dispense_v it_o only_o to_o penitent_n for_o we_o to_o presume_v upon_o the_o mercy_n of_o god_n while_o we_o continue_v impenitent_a be_v the_o great_a nonsense_n in_o the_o world_n it_o be_v to_o suppose_v either_o that_o god_n will_v cancel_v the_o oeconomy_n of_o his_o mercy_n for_o our_o sake_n and_o resume_v the_o dispensation_n of_o it_o immediate_o into_o his_o own_o hand_n mere_o to_o favour_n and_o encourage_v we_o in_o our_o rebellion_n against_o he_o or_o that_o christ_n will_v betray_v the_o trust_n which_o his_o father_n have_v repose_v in_o he_o and_o dispense_v his_o mercy_n to_o we_o contrary_a to_o his_o order_n that_o be_v either_o that_o god_n the_o father_n will_v depose_v his_o son_n

the_o world_n that_o he_o govern_v we_o by_o one_o who_o we_o can_v fancy_v and_o imagine_v when_o we_o can_v see_v or_o feel_v he_o there_o be_v a_o great_a many_o man_n that_o never_o see_v the_o king_n who_o yet_o be_v overawe_v by_o the_o imagination_n they_o have_v of_o his_o majesty_n and_o greatness_n whereas_o be_v not_o the_o king_n a_o man_n but_o a_o pure_a invisible_a spirit_n they_o and_o do_v in_o the_o first_o place_n lie_v hold_v upon_o our_o will_n and_o bind_v our_o inward-man_n and_o from_o thence_o extend_v their_o obligation_n to_o the_o outward_a action_n they_o begin_v with_o that_o which_o be_v the_o principle_n of_o all_o moral_a good_a and_o evil_n and_o by_o rectify_v the_o spring_n and_o wheel_n of_o our_o will_n and_o affection_n within_o communicate_v a_o regular_a motion_n to_o the_o hand_n of_o our_o practice_n without_o but_o for_o our_o better_a understanding_n the_o nature_n of_o these_o law_n and_o the_o obligation_n they_o devolve_v upon_o we_o it_o will_v be_v necessary_a to_o consider_v they_o more_o particular_o they_o be_v all_o reducible_a under_o two_o head_n first_o the_o law_n of_o perfection_n and_o second_o the_o law_n of_o sincerity_n both_o which_o require_v of_o we_o the_o same_o instance_n of_o piety_n and_o virtue_n though_o not_o in_o the_o same_o degree_n nor_o under_o the_o same_o penalty_n i._o there_o be_v the_o law_n of_o perfection_n which_o require_v the_o utmost_a degree_n of_o every_o christian_a virtue_n which_o in_o the_o several_a state_n and_o period_n of_o our_o life_n we_o be_v capable_a of_o attain_v to_o for_o so_o we_o be_v enjoin_v not_o only_o to_o do_v but_o to_o abound_v in_o the_o work_n of_o the_o lord_n not_o only_o to_o have_v grace_n but_o to_o grow_v in_o it_o to_o perfect_a holiness_n in_o the_o fear_n of_o the_o lord_n and_o to_o be_v perfect_a as_o our_o father_n in_o heaven_n be_v perfect_a for_o the_o nature_n of_o god_n be_v the_o standard_n of_o that_o perfection_n whereunto_o we_o be_v oblige_v to_o aspire_v and_o our_o growth_n in_o piety_n and_o virtue_n be_v never_o to_o come_v to_o a_o period_n till_o we_o be_v pure_a as_o he_o be_v pure_a and_o holy_a as_o he_o be_v holy_a i._n e._n till_o we_o be_v arrive_v to_o infinite_a holiness_n which_o because_o our_o finite_a nature_n can_v never_o do_v in_o any_o period_n of_o duration_n therefore_o we_o be_v power_n and_o no_o law_n can_v oblige_v to_o a_o impossibility_n but_o when_o we_o have_v acquire_v one_o that_o give_v we_o power_n to_o acquire_v a_o second_o and_o that_o a_o three_o and_o so_o on_o ad_fw-la infinitum_fw-la thus_o our_o obligation_n to_o be_v more_o and_o more_o perfect_a increase_v proportionable_o to_o the_o improvement_n of_o our_o power_n for_o the_o end_n of_o all_o power_n either_o to_o be_v good_a or_o to_o do_v good_a be_v to_o be_v good_a and_o to_o do_v good_a and_o therefore_o the_o more_o power_n we_o have_v to_o be_v good_a the_o better_a we_o ought_v to_o be_v otherwise_o our_o power_n be_v in_o vain_a while_o we_o be_v but_o babe_n in_o christ_n or_o beginner_n in_o religion_n we_o have_v not_o that_o strength_n and_o power_n as_o when_o we_o be_v man_n and_o have_v make_v a_o considerable_a progress_n and_o therefore_o we_o be_v not_o then_o oblige_v to_o all_o those_o degree_n of_o growth_n and_o perfection_n but_o whatsoever_o degree_n be_v within_o our_o power_n in_o the_o different_a stage_n of_o our_o growth_n and_o progress_n that_o we_o be_v actual_o and_o immediate_o oblige_v to_o and_o so_o long_o as_o we_o be_v defective_a in_o it_o we_o be_v offender_n against_o the_o law_n of_o perfection_n as_o for_o example_n mar._n 12.13_o our_o saviour_n command_v we_o to_o love_v the_o lord_n our_o god_n with_o all_o our_o heart_n with_o all_o our_o soul_n with_o all_o our_o mind_n and_o with_o all_o our_o strength_n that_o be_v that_o we_o shall_v always_o love_v he_o as_o much_o as_o we_o can_v but_o it_o be_v as_o much_o in_o our_o power_n to_o love_v he_o still_o more_o when_o we_o love_v much_o as_o when_o we_o love_v he_o little_a and_o so_o we_o be_v equal_o bind_v still_o to_o love_v he_o as_o much_o as_o we_o can_v when_o we_o have_v ten_o degree_n of_o power_n as_o we_o be_v when_o we_o have_v but_o one_o so_o that_o by_o this_o command_n we_o be_v oblige_v always_o to_o love_n god_n as_o much_o as_o therein_o to_o be_v our_o prophet_n and_o our_o priest_n have_v be_v show_v before_o and_o now_o we_o shall_v proceed_v so_o far_o as_o our_o short_a inquiry_n will_v reach_v to_o show_v what_o admirable_a reason_n there_o be_v why_o he_o shall_v be_v our_o king_n also_o to_o rule_v and_o govern_v we_o in_o the_o same_o assume_v nature_n wherein_o he_o be_v our_o prophet_n and_o our_o
