place_n we_o collect_v the_o exceed_a great_a benefit_n that_o will_v come_v by_o believe_v to_o the_o soul_n the_o difficulty_n in_o get_v of_o it_o can_v be_v so_o great_a but_o the_o benefit_n of_o it_o when_o it_o be_v get_v will_v be_v as_o great_a every_o way_n and_o that_o be_v thus_o faith_n make_v the_o life_n of_o every_o man_n that_o have_v it_o most_o easy_a and_o bring_v full_a content_n to_o the_o soul_n of_o he_o that_o have_v it_o these_o be_v the_o two_o head_n to_o which_o i_o will_v refer_v the_o benefit_n of_o faith_n first_o it_o make_v the_o life_n of_o a_o christian_a most_o easy_a second_o it_o give_v full_a content_n to_o the_o heart_n of_o a_o poor_a christian_a these_o follow_v from_o the_o former_a truth_n in_o this_o manner_n if_o this_o be_v the_o nature_n of_o faith_n to_o cause_v the_o soul_n to_o rest_v upon_o the_o free_a grace_n of_o god_n in_o christ_n and_o to_o furnish_v the_o soul_n with_o a_o supply_n of_o spiritual_a want_n from_o hence_o than_o this_o must_v needs_o make_v the_o life_n
that_o you_o may_v but_o step_v aside_o and_o have_v it_o now_o you_o have_v the_o matter_n for_o your_o faith_n to_o work_v upon_o second_o we_o be_v to_o fit_a faith_n for_o the_o service_n that_o it_o may_v succeed_v with_o more_o comfort_n and_o better_a speed_n for_o though_o a_o man_n be_v a_o believer_n yet_o there_o be_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o dulness_n and_o bluntness_n come_v upon_o this_o grace_n though_o he_o have_v it_o luke_o 24.25_o see_v how_o our_o saviour_n chide_v his_o disciple_n say_v o_o fool_n slow_a and_o dull_a of_o heart_n to_o believe_v etc._n etc._n so_o we_o ought_v to_o whet_v our_o faith_n that_o it_o may_v line_n and_o square_v the_o promise_n as_o it_o be_v in_o the_o hebrew_n that_o it_o may_v pierce_v through_o the_o vale_n of_o all_o the_o riches_n of_o the_o freeness_n of_o god_n grace_n and_o so_o bring_v comfort_n to_o we_o it_o be_v with_o the_o hand_n of_o faith_n as_o it_o be_v with_o the_o hand_n of_o the_o body_n sometime_o though_o the_o thing_n be_v near_o one_o that_o he_o may_v reach_v it_o and_o the_o hand_n have_v life_n yet_o if_o it_o be_v numb_a and_o stiff_a and_o freeze_a a_o man_n must_v warm_v it_o and_o rub_v it_o before_o he_o can_v lay_v hold_n upon_o and_o take_v the_o thing_n and_o do_v the_o work_n in_o hand_n so_o it_o be_v with_o the_o hand_n of_o faith_n for_o faith_n be_v the_o hand_n of_o the_o soul_n it_o take_v hold_v of_o that_o mercy_n and_o comfort_n which_o god_n have_v prepare_v for_o we_o in_o christ_n jesus_n now_o that_o faith_n be_v numb_a and_o stiff_a through_o carelessness_n and_o looseness_n therefore_o it_o be_v not_o enough_o for_o a_o man_n to_o have_v faith_n but_o he_o must_v supple_a and_o oil_n the_o finewe_n of_o faith_n that_o he_o may_v catch_v more_o speedy_o at_o the_o promise_n of_o life_n and_o receive_v comfort_n from_o thence_o particul_n 2_o now_o for_o the_o set_n of_o our_o faith_n to_o be_v limber_a and_o quick_a there_o be_v three_o rule_n to_o be_v marvellous_a folly_n be_v it_o for_o a_o man_n to_o question_n when_o he_o shall_v use_v it_o the_o work_n must_v needs_o be_v marvellous_o hinder_v though_o he_o have_v never_o so_o much_o faith_n when_o he_o begin_v to_o cavil_n with_o it_o and_o to_o question_v whither_o it_o be_v good_a or_o no_o it_o be_v a_o proverbial_a speech_n he_o that_o doubt_v of_o his_o way_n â—â—sisseth_v of_o his_o way_n for_o while_o he_o be_v doubt_v he_o go_v no_o way_n in_o conclusion_n so_o he_o that_o do_v question_n whether_o he_o have_v faith_n or_o no_o and_o therefore_o get_v little_a good_a by_o rich_a promise_n and_o while_o he_o be_v yet_o in_o the_o law_n and_o make_v question_n of_o his_o faith_n the_o truth_n be_v the_o promise_n lie_v by_o and_o he_o dare_v not_o meddle_v with_o they_o and_o he_o suspect_v whether_o he_o may_v venture_v upon_o they_o or_o no_o and_o the_o reason_n be_v he_o be_v quarrel_v with_o and_o doubt_v of_o his_o faith_n when_o he_o shall_v live_v by_o it_o gun_n in_o stead_n of_o hit_v the_o mark_n it_o recoil_v and_o hurt_v he_o because_o that_o either_o it_o be_v not_o well_o stock_v or_o else_o it_o be_v rusty_a so_o it_o be_v with_o a_o poor_a faithful_a soul_n though_o the_o heart_n do_v believe_v and_o his_o heart_n be_v of_o a_o right_a stamp_n and_o be_v able_a to_o lay_v hold_n on_o the_o promise_n if_o that_o faith_n grow_v rusty_a with_o our_o doubt_n and_o be_v unstable_a or_o unsettled_a it_o recoil_v again_o upon_o we_o and_o we_o sit_v down_o dismay_v whereas_o we_o may_v have_v go_v to_o christ_n and_o receive_v mercy_n from_o he_o and_o therefore_o our_o saviour_n say_v of_o the_o wise_a virgin_n matth._n 25.7_o they_o trim_v their_o lamp_n and_o when_o the_o bridegroom_n come_v they_o enter_v with_o he_o into_o the_o chamber_n so_o it_o shall_v be_v with_o our_o soul_n it_o be_v not_o enough_o for_o a_o gracious_a heart_n to_o have_v true_a faith_n and_o true_a oil_n but_o if_o there_o grow_v any_o snuff_n dis-inables_a a_o man_n to_o put_v forth_o the_o power_n of_o his_o faith_n as_o if_o he_o have_v no_o faith_n at_o all_o as_o some_o that_o be_v melancholy_a they_o think_v they_o can_v speak_v nor_o go_v this_o have_v make_v man_n not_o to_o speak_v for_o many_o year_n together_o though_o they_o can_v and_o do_v speak_v to_o this_o day_n therefore_o for_o the_o conclusion_n of_o this_o first_o part_n of_o zeal_n to_o get_v they_o to_o holy_a heart_n and_o to_o exact_a life_n and_o conversation_n therefore_o i_o be_o marvellous_a hardly_o draw_v on_o to_o the_o least_o dispute_n in_o this_o kind_n and_o yet_o at_o the_o earnest_a request_n of_o some_o and_o also_o because_o this_o be_v the_o proper_a place_n where_o this_o question_n fall_v and_o to_o clear_v some_o doubt_n according_a to_o my_o promise_n and_o because_o haply_o some_o good_a mâ—n_z may_v stumble_v at_o some_o thing_n therefore_o let_v i_o deliver_v those_o thought_n which_o i_o have_v many_o time_n heretofore_o intend_v to_o impart_v and_o i_o shall_v be_v very_o willing_a to_o hear_v of_o better_a argument_n if_o any_o shall_v be_v suggest_v these_o be_v spiritual_a passage_n and_o hard_a and_o difficult_a therefore_o this_o i_o will_v tell_v you_o first_o what_o the_o controversy_n be_v and_o wherein_o it_o lie_v second_o the_o reason_n of_o it_o three_o show_v the_o order_n of_o god_n proceed_n in_o this_o work_n of_o grace_n in_o the_o soul_n and_o when_o these_o be_v do_v the_o point_n will_v be_v very_o plain_a first_o for_o the_o first_o namely_o wherein_o this_o controversy_n lie_v it_o be_v confess_v of_o all_o hand_n that_o adam_n in_o his_o innocency_n do_v not_o believe_v in_o a_o saviour_n he_o need_v it_o not_o only_o here_o lie_v the_o main_a point_n of_o controversy_n that_o though_o adam_n do_v not_o believe_v in_o a_o saviour_n and_o god_n do_v not_o require_v it_o yet_o man_n conceive_v and_o some_o judicious_a divine_n too_o that_o adam_n have_v ability_n that_o if_o christ_n have_v be_v reveal_v he_o can_v have_v believe_v for_o they_o say_v thus_o a_o man_n be_v able_a have_v a_o clear_a eye_n to_o see_v but_o one_o world_n because_o there_o be_v no_o more_o but_o if_o there_o be_v five_o world_n the_o same_o eye_n that_o see_v one_o the_o same_o eye_n will_v see_v they_o all_o if_o they_o be_v visible_o make_v so_o adam_n do_v not_o believe_v a_o saviour_n because_o the_o lord_n christ_n be_v not_o reveal_v and_o administer_v to_o he_o but_o adam_n have_v that_o spiritual_a power_n of_o faith_n if_o the_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n have_v be_v reveal_v he_o be_v able_a to_o believe_v in_o he_o and_o so_o to_o rest_v upon_o he_o as_o man_n do_v now_o in_o the_o time_n of_o the_o gospel_n this_o be_v the_o controversy_n which_o we_o flat_o deny_v second_o the_o reason_n to_o confirm_v this_o point_n that_o adam_n have_v not_o this_o grace_n of_o faith_n the_o reason_n be_v this_o this_o believe_a in_o the_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n â—is_fw-la that_o which_o do_v direct_o cross_v the_o estate_n of_o adam_n in_o his_o innocency_n and_o the_o innocency_n of_o adam_n wherein_o he_o be_v create_v and_o therefore_o can_v by_o no_o mean_n agree_v to_o he_o and_o that_o appear_v thus_o for_o a_o man_n to_o have_v a_o principle_n of_o life_n in_o himself_o which_o adam_n have_v and_o to_o fetch_v a_o principle_n of_o life_n from_o another_o which_o we_o do_v by_o faith_n these_o be_v contrary_a the_o one_o to_o the_o other_o he_o live_v well_o and_o to_o be_v save_v by_o live_v well_o and_o to_o be_v save_v by_o another_o and_o to_o live_v well_o by_o the_o power_n of_o another_o these_o be_v contrary_n one_o to_o the_o other_o to_o have_v all_o in_o himself_o as_o adam_n have_v and_o to_o have_v all_o from_o another_o and_o not_o in_o himself_o these_o be_v contradiction_n the_o one_o to_o the_o other_o and_o therefore_o can_v stand_v together_o and_o therefore_o observe_v it_o the_o manner_n and_o phrase_n of_o scripture_n be_v this_o and_o it_o be_v very_o strange_a phil._n 3.9_o that_o i_o may_v be_v find_v in_o he_o not_o have_v my_o own_o righteousness_n as_o if_o he_o shall_v say_v adam_z in_o his_o ready_a to_o be_v persuade_v of_o the_o need_n and_o benefit_n of_o any_o grace_n natural_o than_o of_o this_o grace_n of_o faith_n as_o a_o ignorant_a man_n and_o a_o weak_a man_n when_o he_o be_v ask_v a_o question_n and_o a_o point_n of_o dispute_n he_o say_v oh_o that_o i_o have_v learning_n and_o be_v able_a to_o dispute_v the_o reason_n be_v because_o he_o be_v sensible_a of_o his_o want_n of_o knowledge_n in_o that_o kind_n and_o when_o a_o poor_a christian_a come_v to_o join_v in_o prayer_n and_o in_o conference_n with_o other_o it_o may_v be_v his_o ability_n be_v small_a and_o when_o he_o hear_v such_o a_o man_n pray_v so_o holy_o and_o able_a to_o give_v such_o wholesome_a counsel_n he_o say_v oh_o that_o i_o have_v that_o gift_n in_o prayer_n and_o those_o part_n and_o ability_n what_o a_o happy_a man_n shall_v i_o be_v he_o be_v sensible_a that_o he_o want_v the_o power_n of_o prayer_n and_o ability_n to_o confer_v and_o all_o this_o while_n he_o say_v not_o a_o word_n of_o his_o unbelief_n he_o complain_v not_o of_o that_o the_o reason_n be_v because_o all_o those_o ability_n that_o carry_v a_o man_n to_o his_o duty_n towards_o man_n we_o be_v more_o sensible_a of_o the_o want_n of_o they_o because_o that_o our_o credit_n and_o respect_n lie_v upon_o they_o because_o a_o man_n think_v if_o he_o want_v these_o it_o be_v a_o discredit_n and_o he_o shall_v want_v that_o respect_n that_o he_o may_v have_v therefore_o because_o these_o carry_v a_o man_n to_o his_o duty_n towards_o man_n and_o make_v for_o our_o credit_n we_o be_v sensible_a of_o the_o need_n and_o use_v of_o they_o but_o faith_n in_o the_o next_o work_n of_o it_o be_v to_o close_v with_o god_n and_o to_o fasten_v upon_o he_o and_o to_o rely_v upon_o the_o precious_a promise_n all_o these_o be_v beyond_o the_o reach_n of_o the_o world_n â—nd_v unbelief_n be_v the_o withdraw_n of_o itself_o from_o god_n and_o christ_n now_o because_o unbelief_n do_v not_o so_o much_o follow_v undeniable_o that_o as_o a_o poor_a sinner_n be_v hardly_o bring_v to_o see_v the_o want_n of_o faith_n and_o see_v less_o need_n of_o faith_n than_o of_o any_o other_o grace_n because_o he_o have_v less_o need_n of_o it_o outward_o in_o the_o next_o work_n of_o it_o therefore_o a_o christian_a bestow_v least_o care_n and_o time_n about_o faith_n and_o have_v small_a and_o feeble_a desire_n after_o it_o and_o little_a care_n to_o get_v it_o but_o it_o be_v plain_o prove_v before_o that_o a_o christian_n be_v hardly_o convince_v that_o he_o want_v faith_n and_o see_v less_o need_n of_o faith_n natural_o than_o of_o any_o other_o grace_n and_o therefore_o he_o have_v less_o care_n to_o get_v it_o for_o that_o which_o a_o man_n see_v but_o little_a need_n and_o use_v of_o that_o he_o have_v least_o care_n to_o get_v this_o i_o desire_v to_o make_v use_n of_o and_o so_o i_o desire_v my_o fellow_n brethren_n and_o minister_n this_o be_v the_o common_a course_n of_o the_o world_n take_v a_o sinner_n who_o eye_n god_n have_v open_v and_o reveal_v his_o sin_n and_o corruption_n to_o he_o and_o let_v he_o see_v his_o wrath_n from_o heaven_n against_o he_o and_o drive_v a_o man_n to_o a_o stand_n so_o that_o he_o say_v if_o this_o be_v so_o than_o i_o be_o a_o damn_a man_n and_o so_o he_o be_v even_o stagger_v now_o in_o this_o extremity_n mark_v the_o behaviour_n of_o this_o poor_a soul_n he_o will_v do_v any_o thing_n but_o believe_v and_o seek_v for_o any_o thing_n but_o for_o faith_n he_o will_v confess_v and_o cry_v out_o of_o his_o sin_n and_o resolve_v amendment_n and_o the_o drunkard_n loathâ—_n his_o old_a company_n and_o the_o adulterer_n will_v not_o go_v after_o his_o lust_n any_o more_o and_o the_o covetous_a mâ—â—_n in_o the_o horror_n of_o conscience_n will_v rid_v his_o hand_n of_o all_o his_o ilâ—_n get_v good_n and_o send_v for_o one_o man_n and_o call_v for_o another_o and_o make_v restitution_n and_o all_o this_o while_n not_o one_o word_n of_o faith_n nor_o of_o go_v our_o of_o himself_n to_o a_o christ_n for_o mercy_n and_o succour_v for_o he_o â—ay_n those_o that_o have_v be_v desperate_a persecutor_n of_o god_n and_o of_o his_o much_o and_o grace_n upon_o their_o deathbed_n they_o will_v turn_v to_o god_n and_o love_v his_o people_n and_o now_o those_o will_v pray_v which_o former_o have_v scorn_v prayer_n and_o they_o will_v do_v this_o and_o that_o and_o yet_o all_o this_o while_n not_o one_o word_n of_o this_o precious_a faith_n the_o reason_n issue_v from_o the_o too_o former_a thing_n because_o they_o be_v not_o convince_v that_o they_o want_v faith_n and_o do_v not_o see_v the_o â—eed_n and_o use_v of_o faith_n and_o therefore_o do_v not_o desire_v nor_o look_v after_o it_o so_o gather_v up_o all_o and_o the_o sum_n be_v this_o if_o all_o man_n by_o nature_n be_v marvellous_a hard_o convince_v that_o they_o want_v faith_n and_o see_v the_o â—â—rtle_n and_o if_o all_o man_n bestow_v least_o care_n how_o to_o get_v his_o faith_n than_o the_o case_n be_v clear_a and_o it_o be_v no_o marâ—ell_n though_o the_o most_o man_n want_v faith_n now_o we_o have_v lay_v the_o indictment_n and_o it_o be_v marvellous_a â—aire_n you_o see_v and_o you_o can_v but_o confess_v it_o for_o 〈◊〉_d be_v against_o reason_n to_o deny_v it_o as_o some_o stuâ—dy_a hypocrite_n do_v that_o will_v believe_v nothing_o but_o what_o â—hey_n listen_v and_o yet_o they_o will_v be_v believer_n too_o now_o let_v we_o come_v to_o plead_v the_o inditment_n â—ow_o i_o think_v every_o man_n heart_n shall_v tremble_v within_o he_o and_z â—â—e_z think_v your_o very_a countenance_n do_v suggest_v what_o your_o heart_n do_v desire_v let_v every_o man_n cast_v his_o head_n up_o and_o down_o and_o paâ—ly_a many_o that_o liveâ—â—_n the_o bosom_n of_o the_o church_n want_v faith_n i_o think_v i_o hear_v some_o say_v and_o be_o not_o
and_o never_o rest_n till_o you_o get_v this_o bless_a grace_n of_o faith_n that_o you_o may_v be_v happy_a by_o it_o for_o ever_o sort._n 3_o the_o three_o sort_n which_o we_o will_v meddle_v withal_o and_o discover_v that_o have_v no_o part_n in_o this_o save_a faith_n be_v the_o mere_a civilise_a and_o seem_o judicious_a professor_n such_o as_o bear_v up_o themselves_o marvellous_a comfortable_o upon_o their_o own_o wisdom_n and_o judgement_n howsoever_o these_o have_v a_o name_n yet_o it_o be_v but_o a_o name_n and_o no_o more_o and_o for_o this_o man_n that_o we_o may_v discover_v he_o and_o that_o he_o may_v know_v himself_o we_o will_v do_v it_o in_o three_o thing_n first_o i_o will_v show_v he_o in_o his_o fashion_n second_o wherein_o his_o falseness_n do_v appear_v and_o wherein_o he_o fall_v short_a three_o wherein_o he_o discover_v himself_o to_o fall_v short_a first_o he_o be_v a_o man_n that_o will_v deal_v very_o honest_o and_o fair_o between_o man_n and_o man_n he_o be_v not_o scandalous_a in_o his_o practice_n he_o be_v a_o man_n of_o good_a part_n and_o deep_a understanding_n and_o deep_a reach_n if_o you_o will_v believe_v he_o and_o he_o exceed_v the_o most_o nay_o even_o the_o best_a in_o his_o private_a pain_n he_o be_v very_o studious_a and_o read_v much_o and_o can_v remember_v well_o and_o can_v express_v himself_o marvellous_a well_o and_o so_o will_v carry_v all_o before_o he_o nay_o this_o man_n be_v so_o lift_v up_o in_o his_o imagination_n that_o he_o can_v almost_o undertake_v to_o teach_v minister_n how_o to_o preach_v if_o any_o man_n out_o of_o weakness_n will_v condescend_v to_o he_o but_o if_o you_o follow_v he_o home_o to_o his_o family_n there_o he_o pray_v but_o once_o a_o week_n and_o if_o misery_n and_o sorrow_n and_o affliction_n come_v than_o haply_o he_o can_v pray_v twice_o unless_o some_o carnal_a base_a friend_n come_v into_o his_o family_n which_o haply_o will_v scorn_v he_o and_o his_o profession_n than_o he_o pray_v once_o and_o scarce_o that_o because_o he_o will_v not_o offend_v his_o friend_n and_o hence_o it_o be_v that_o poor_a people_n make_v this_o man_n a_o oracle_n and_o this_o man_n word_n and_o judgement_n and_o determination_n they_o be_v of_o great_a weight_n and_o if_o a_o poor_a soul_n which_o can_v dive_v deep_o into_o his_o own_o heart_n come_v and_o question_n his_o faith_n and_o to_o make_v some_o doubt_n of_o his_o grace_n all_o be_v in_o a_o uproar_n present_o what_o say_v they_o such_o a_o man_n have_v no_o faith_n the_o lord_n be_v merciful_a to_o we_o then_o if_o a_o man_n of_o such_o judgement_n and_o part_n have_v no_o faith_n then_o what_o shall_v become_v of_o we_o this_o man_n word_n cast_v the_o balance_n any_o way_n and_o his_o word_n be_v of_o great_a weight_n among_o the_o vulgar_a sort_n of_o people_n and_o hence_o it_o be_v that_o the_o poor_a ignorant_a creature_n bear_v up_o themselves_o upon_o this_o man_n judgement_n and_o say_v they_o for_o a_o man_n to_o pray_v twice_o a_o day_n it_o be_v not_o require_v and_o it_o be_v more_o than_o be_v needful_a and_o if_o a_o man_n have_v a_o mind_n to_o stay_v at_o home_n may_v he_o not_o read_v the_o word_n in_o his_o own_o house_n and_o get_v as_o much_o good_a by_o it_o as_o by_o go_v to_o church_n wise_a than_o we_o think_v so_o and_o if_o it_o be_v not_o so_o do_v you_o think_v such_o a_o man_n will_v profess_v it_o a_o man_n of_o part_n and_o good_a judgement_n and_o many_o time_n god_n own_o servant_n out_o of_o the_o sight_n of_o their_o own_o weakness_n and_o the_o discouragement_n of_o their_o own_o heart_n and_o when_o they_o see_v themselves_o so_o far_o outbid_v by_o their_o part_n than_o they_o have_v such_o a_o one_o in_o a_o high_a account_n and_o prefer_v he_o above_o themselves_o by_o many_o degree_n now_o see_v the_o guise_n of_o this_o man_n hence_o it_o be_v that_o this_o man_n fall_v in_o love_n with_o himself_o and_o be_v lift_v up_o into_o a_o fool_n paradise_n and_o he_o begin_v to_o admire_v at_o himself_o and_o for_o any_o matter_n of_o faith_n he_o do_v not_o question_v it_o what_o a_o man_n of_o such_o wisdom_n and_o such_o understanding_n what_o not_o he_o faith_n he_o make_v no_o question_n he_o can_v miss_v of_o faith_n and_o so_o he_o go_v away_o comfortable_o and_o content_o thus_o you_o see_v the_o faith_n of_o this_o man_n second_o we_o come_v to_o view_v and_o to_o see_v where_o he_o fall_v short_a now_o you_o see_v he_o oh_o that_o the_o lord_n will_v make_v he_o see_v himself_o and_o brethren_n observe_v thus_o much_o few_o of_o these_o man_n be_v ever_o bring_v home_o by_o the_o powerful_a preach_n of_o the_o gospel_n and_o the_o reason_n be_v because_o their_o own_o wisdom_n be_v beyond_o the_o ministry_n of_o the_o word_n and_o they_o say_v such_o a_o minister_n be_v a_o good_a scholar_n but_o have_v he_o that_o wisdom_n and_o those_o part_n and_o the_o like_a thus_o they_o rear_v up_o bulwark_n against_o the_o word_n of_o truth_n that_o it_o sink_v not_o into_o their_o heart_n therefore_o to_o make_v this_o man_n know_v to_o himself_o observe_v thus_o much_o in_o the_o general_a the_o baseness_n of_o this_o man_n faith_n for_o it_o be_v no_o better_o but_o that_o he_o be_v delude_v that_o he_o can_v see_v it_o it_o discover_v itself_o thus_o it_o be_v breed_v in_o his_o book_n and_o in_o his_o judgement_n and_o go_v no_o further_o and_o it_o be_v far_o from_o save_v faith_n therefore_o that_o the_o indictment_n may_v lie_v clear_a and_o that_o we_o may_v outbid_v he_o in_o his_o book_n learning_n and_o all_o know_v thus_o much_o the_o main_a ground_n of_o this_o man_n mistake_n may_v be_v discover_v thus_o there_o be_v two_o thing_n in_o the_o nature_n of_o faith_n first_o illumination_n second_o application_n as_o we_o term_v it_o illumination_n not_o only_o be_v when_o a_o man_n have_v the_o common_a rumour_n and_o intimation_n of_o the_o truth_n of_o god_n in_o the_o gospel_n and_o know_v the_o reason_n of_o the_o text_n and_o the_o meaning_n of_o the_o scripture_n this_o the_o reprobate_n may_v have_v and_o this_o he_o have_v but_o there_o be_v also_o a_o operation_n of_o the_o spirit_n upon_o the_o affection_n and_o then_o there_o come_v a_o application_n wherein_o the_o soul_n go_v out_o to_o the_o promise_n and_o take_v that_o for_o his_o good_a which_o be_v thereunto_o appoint_v now_o observe_v this_o judicious_a man_n he_o have_v a_o general_a apprehension_n of_o the_o truth_n of_o the_o gospel_n but_o as_o for_o that_o special_a work_n upon_o the_o will_n and_o to_o enter_v in_o upon_o the_o promise_n of_o god_n and_o to_o have_v the_o sap_n and_o sweet_a of_o these_o and_o to_o go_v out_o to_o christ_n and_o to_o take_v all_o from_o christ_n he_o be_v a_o stranger_n to_o this_o and_o it_o go_v beyond_o all_o his_o book_n learning_n and_o hence_o it_o be_v that_o when_o the_o minister_n come_v to_o handle_v these_o point_n he_o say_v the_o minister_n be_v something_o confuse_v to_o day_n and_o the_o reason_n why_o he_o faith_n so_o it_o be_v because_o he_o do_v not_o understand_v they_o these_o man_n be_v ignorant_a in_o the_o spiritual_a turn_n of_o the_o heart_n john_n 3.8_o 9_o when_o christ_n come_v to_o teach_v nicodemus_n he_o be_v at_o a_o loss_n and_o think_v that_o christ_n speak_v without_o book_n therefore_o christ_n read_v the_o lecture_n again_o and_o say_v i_o speak_v of_o the_o spiritual_a work_n that_o which_o be_v bear_v of_o the_o flesh_n be_v flesh_n and_o that_o which_o be_v bear_v of_o the_o spirit_n be_v spirit_n oh_o say_v he_o how_o can_v these_o thing_n be_v he_o can_v not_o gainsay_v christ_n and_o yet_o because_o he_o can_v not_o understand_v it_o therefore_o he_o will_v not_o yield_v so_o it_o be_v with_o this_o man_n it_o befall_v this_o man_n as_o it_o be_v with_o some_o wise_a lawyer_n he_o read_v over_o a_o man_n writing_n and_o the_o lease_n and_o he_o rehearse_v the_o tenor_n upon_o which_o the_o land_n be_v hold_v and_o what_o right_a the_o man_n have_v to_o they_o he_o lay_v open_v all_o the_o question_n of_o the_o law_n and_o he_o read_v his_o name_n in_o the_o will_n and_o yet_o he_o never_o read_v his_o own_o name_n there_o nor_o any_o right_n that_o he_o have_v to_o they_o just_o so_o it_o be_v with_o this_o judicious_a professor_n he_o be_v able_a to_o dispute_v of_o the_o main_a point_n of_o the_o gospel_n and_o show_v that_o other_o have_v right_a to_o they_o and_o he_o read_v the_o writing_n but_o never_o come_v to_o partake_v of_o they_o himself_o as_o it_o be_v with_o the_o wise_a man_n that_o come_v to_o inquire_v for_o christ_n
heart_n say_v i_o shall_v not_o know_v what_o god_n mind_n be_v or_o i_o shall_v not_o do_v what_o i_o know_v or_o it_o will_v not_o succeed_v or_o no_o it_o be_v not_o in_o my_o power_n now_o we_o leave_v all_o these_o with_o god_n and_o meddle_v not_o with_o they_o but_o put_v they_o over_o to_o the_o lord_n and_o meddle_v with_o thy_o own_o duty_n and_o work_n and_o let_v god_n alone_o with_o he_o and_o say_v thou_o unto_o the_o lord_n in_o truth_n lord_n it_o be_v not_o in_o my_o power_n it_o be_v not_o in_o my_o part_n or_o work_n either_o to_o compass_v that_o wisdom_n that_o be_v able_a to_o direct_v myself_o or_o to_o have_v any_o power_n to_o do_v all_o that_o be_v command_v much_o less_o to_o give_v good_a success_n lord_n i_o will_v not_o meddle_v with_o that_o but_o leave_v it_o to_o thy_o majesty_n if_o thou_o in_o thy_o power_n can_v not_o nor_o in_o thy_o faithfulness_n and_o goodness_n care_v not_o for_o thy_o poor_a helpless_a creature_n than_o i_o be_o content_a and_o if_o thou_o will_v not_o be_v faithful_a than_o i_o be_o content_a to_o be_v miserable_a and_o so_o thou_o may_v suppose_v a_o man_n that_o have_v promise_v to_o undertake_v some_o business_n for_o a_o friend_n and_o then_o in_o the_o end_n it_o prove_v somewhat_o troublesome_a and_o therefore_o he_o wish_v his_o friend_n to_o take_v it_o again_o into_o his_o own_o hand_n for_o it_o be_v very_o troublesome_a but_o a_o man_n will_v leave_v it_o unto_o he_o and_o say_v he_o have_v engage_v himself_o to_o do_v it_o and_o he_o will_v not_o look_v after_o it_o i_o will_v not_o meddle_v with_o it_o any_o more_o so_o what_o end_v it_o be_v that_o be_v in_o god_n royal_a prerogative_n leave_v it_o with_o god_n and_o do_v not_o meddle_v with_o it_o let_v god_n look_v to_o it_o the_o use_n of_o those_o mean_n that_o he_o have_v appoint_v for_o the_o attain_n of_o that_o good_a which_o his_o power_n will_v work_v for_o thou_o god_n will_v work_v it_o and_o so_o thou_o must_v meet_v god_n in_o the_o course_n of_o his_o providence_n in_o the_o improvement_n of_o the_o mean_n he_o have_v appoint_v for_o thy_o good_a observe_v thou_o his_o providence_n and_o do_v thou_o what_o god_n require_v for_o otherwise_o we_o live_v not_o by_o faith_n but_o tempt_v god_n and_o throw_v away_o the_o promise_n and_o all_o and_o deprive_v ourselves_o of_o that_o good_a which_o god_n will_v bestow_v unless_o we_o walk_v in_o that_o way_n which_o he_o have_v appoint_v luke_n 24.49_o when_o our_o saviour_n be_v to_o go_v to_o heaven_n he_o say_v behold_v i_o send_v the_o the_o deed_n god_n will_v give_v thou_o a_o blessing_n but_o thou_o be_v not_o there_o to_o take_v it_o this_o be_v the_o excellency_n of_o the_o promise_n of_o god_n as_o they_o require_v condition_n before_o they_o bestow_v mercy_n so_o they_o make_v we_o able_a to_o be_v partaker_n of_o the_o condition_n and_o give_v the_o condition_n as_o for_o example_n ezech._n 36._o the_o lord_n in_o the_o former_a part_n of_o the_o chapter_n promise_v to_o give_v many_o thing_n to_o they_o but_o how_o it_o must_v be_v by_o prayer_n and_o humble_v themselves_o before_o he_o he_o will_v give_v a_o blessing_n in_o thy_o family_n by_o prayer_n in_o it_o and_o a_o blessing_n in_o private_a by_o pray_v in_o private_a and_o strength_n against_o sin_n and_o power_n against_o corruption_n but_o i_o will_v be_v seek_v unto_o for_o all_o these_o say_v the_o lord_n and_o the_o text_n say_v bless_a be_v the_o man_n that_o walk_v in_o his_o integrity_n and_o his_o child_n after_o he_o therefore_o walk_v thou_o in_o the_o integrity_n that_o be_v the_o condition_n of_o a_o christian_a in_o general_a or_o as_o a_o husband_n or_o as_o a_o wife_n or_o as_o a_o servant_n in_o the_o particular_a this_o the_o promise_n require_v but_o mark_v this_o now_o the_o same_o promise_n that_o require_v the_o condition_n will_v help_v we_o to_o perform_v the_o condition_n and_o the_o same_o lord_n that_o say_v i_o will_v be_v entreat_v and_o seek_v to_o for_o all_o these_o the_o same_o lord_n say_v psal_n 10.17_o he_o prepare_v their_o heart_n to_o pray_v go_v thou_o therefore_o to_o god_n to_o
