have_v be_v fit_a for_o man_n improve_v and_o confirm_v in_o virtue_n and_o goodness_n what_o i_o have_v hitherto_o be_v discourse_v concern_v the_o nature_n of_o mankind_n appear_v to_o i_o in_o itself_o high_o reasonable_a and_o i_o think_v will_v do_v so_o upon_o serious_a consideration_n to_o such_o a_o deist_n as_o i_o be_o argue_v with_o and_o if_o so_o i_o will_v then_o proceed_v to_o ask_v whether_o such_o creature_n as_o these_o be_v not_o fit_a object_n of_o the_o divine_a care_n and_o if_o they_o be_v fall_v of_o the_o divine_a compassion_n also_o suppose_v any_o of_o they_o capable_a of_o a_o recovery_n from_o their_o lapse_v estate_n will_v it_o not_o appear_v very_o worthy_a of_o the_o infinite_o good_a god_n to_o concern_v himself_o in_o some_o extraordinary_a way_n for_o the_o restoration_n and_o salvation_n of_o being_n who_o he_o have_v form_v after_o this_o excellent_a manner_n to_o who_o he_o have_v impart_v so_o many_o of_o his_o own_o perfection_n in_o such_o a_o degree_n and_o who_o he_o have_v make_v capable_a of_o be_v for_o ever_o happy_a in_o his_o favour_n but_o for_o the_o far_a illustration_n of_o this_o matter_n we_o may_v in_o the_o next_o place_n consider_v the_o person_n who_o christ_n jesus_n come_v to_o save_v as_o they_o be_v in_o their_o fall_a state_n sinner_n as_o our_o text_n call_v they_o and_o see_v whether_o under_o that_o denomination_n also_o they_o be_v not_o proper_a object_n of_o the_o divine_a compassion_n even_o in_o such_o a_o degree_n as_o it_o be_v express_v by_o the_o undertake_n of_o our_o redeemer_n the_o method_n of_o our_o salvation_n by_o jesus_n christ_n be_v so_o contrive_v as_o i_o hope_v to_o show_v hereafter_o as_o not_o only_o to_o testify_v the_o compassion_n of_o god_n towards_o sinner_n but_o also_o his_o hatred_n of_o sin_n to_o make_v it_o appear_v therefore_o that_o such_o a_o method_n be_v agreeable_a to_o the_o divine_a nature_n we_o shall_v do_v well_o to_o consider_v the_o condition_n of_o man_n as_o sinner_n to_o which_o purpose_n it_o may_v be_v proper_a to_o take_v into_o consideration_n the_o nature_n of_o sin_n to_o observe_v the_o miserable_a consequence_n of_o it_o to_o mankind_n and_o to_o inquire_v how_o man_n be_v draw_v into_o the_o commission_n of_o it_o to_o take_v into_o consideration_n the_o nature_n of_o sin_n i_o doubt_v not_o but_o those_o who_o undervalue_n our_o bless_a saviour_n undertake_v for_o the_o recovery_n of_o sinner_n have_v at_o the_o same_o time_n very_o slight_a apprehension_n of_o the_o evil_a of_o sin_n they_o be_v apt_a to_o account_v it_o a_o matter_n of_o no_o great_a consideration_n or_o consequence_n for_o so_o inconsiderable_a a_o creature_n as_o they_o will_v have_v man_n to_o be_v to_o gratify_v suppose_v the_o inclination_n of_o his_o fleshly_a part_n though_o against_o the_o dictate_v of_o his_o mind_n and_o the_o law_n of_o his_o maker_n but_o this_o proceed_v from_o their_o want_n of_o a_o due_a sense_n of_o the_o nature_n and_o reason_n of_o thing_n for_o to_o sin_n against_o god_n be_v for_o a_o creature_n to_o rebel_v against_o his_o creator_n and_o preserver_n it_o be_v to_o oppose_v his_o will_n to_o the_o will_n of_o the_o supreme_a lord_n and_o sovereign_n of_o the_o universe_n it_o be_v to_o disturb_v that_o excellent_a order_n which_o be_v appoint_v and_o settle_v by_o he_o who_o make_v all_o thing_n very_o good_a it_o be_v for_o a_o man_n to_o assume_v to_o himself_o a_o liberty_n of_o do_v that_o which_o god_n will_v not_o allow_v himself_o to_o do_v namely_o to_o vary_v from_o the_o eternal_a and_o unalterable_a law_n of_o truth_n and_o goodness_n those_o law_n which_o result_n necessary_o from_o the_o nature_n of_o god_n and_o the_o condition_n of_o create_a being_n it_o be_v resist_v the_o high_a power_n contradict_v unerring_a wisdom_n disoblige_v infinite_a goodness_n make_v disingenuous_a and_o ungrateful_a return_v to_o the_o most_o endear_n obligation_n it_o be_v in_o a_o word_n thwart_v the_o true_a judgement_n and_o pervert_v the_o natural_a bias_n of_o a_o man_n be_v own_o mind_n and_o act_v contrary_a to_o the_o very_a frame_n and_o design_n of_o his_o nature_n now_o whatsoever_o be_v absurd_a or_o monstrous_a in_o nature_n we_o be_v apt_a to_o conceive_v a_o abhorrence_n at_o the_o first_o appearance_n of_o it_o and_o whosoever_o be_v endue_v with_o moral_a principle_n ought_v in_o like_a manner_n to_o feel_v a_o detestation_n arise_v in_o his_o soul_n when_o he_o consider_v the_o nature_n of_o sin_n as_o i_o have_v here_o represent_v it_o do_v not_o every_o ingenuous_a and_o well-disposed_a mind_n severe_o censure_v and_o detest_v the_o untoward_a behaviour_n of_o a_o graceless_a child_n towards_o a_o wise_a and_o tender_a parent_n the_o unworthy_a carriage_n of_o a_o rebellious_a subject_n towards_o a_o just_a and_o kind_a prince_n one_o who_o be_v true_o the_o father_n of_o his_o country_n especial_o when_o the_o rebel_n not_o only_o dishonour_v his_o superior_n but_o at_o the_o same_o time_n disturb_v the_o peace_n and_o good_a order_n of_o the_o whole_a community_n do_v not_o all_o man_n of_o good_a sense_n and_o honest_a disposition_n abhor_v he_o who_o shall_v make_v spiteful_a or_o ungrateful_a return_n to_o a_o benefactor_n or_o a_o friend_n to_o who_o he_o have_v be_v extreme_o behold_v who_o be_v there_o that_o do_v not_o despise_v the_o man_n that_o degrade_n and_o vilify_v himself_o by_o do_v thing_n altogether_o unworthy_a of_o his_o birth_n and_o education_n or_o profession_n why_o all_o this_o and_o infinite_o more_o be_v in_o the_o nature_n of_o a_o sin_n voluntary_o commit_v against_o almighty_a god_n and_o be_v it_o not_o credible_a then_o that_o so_o holy_a and_o good_a a_o be_v as_o god_n be_v shall_v be_v incline_v to_o save_v such_o of_o his_o creature_n as_o be_v capable_a of_o salvation_n from_o so_o great_a a_o evil_a and_o that_o he_o shall_v effect_v it_o in_o such_o a_o way_n as_o may_v convince_v they_o at_o once_o both_o of_o his_o compassion_n towards_o they_o and_o his_o abhorrence_n of_o their_o evil_a do_n but_o to_o render_v this_o the_o more_o evident_a we_o may_v in_o the_o next_o place_n observe_v the_o miserable_a consequence_n of_o sin_n to_o mankind_n and_o that_o either_o in_o any_o single_a sinner_n apart_o or_o in_o the_o mass_n and_o bulk_n of_o mankind_n in_o general_n the_o state_n of_o every_o particular_a sinner_n be_v extreme_o miserable_a a_o man_n have_v no_o soon_o consent_v to_o iniquity_n but_o he_o be_v natural_o fill_v with_o great_a uneasiness_n of_o mind_n arise_v from_o shame_n and_o fear_n from_o a_o consciousness_n of_o have_v do_v a_o unworthy_a act_n and_o a_o apprehension_n of_o the_o mischief_n that_o may_v follow_v the_o very_a first_o act_n be_v a_o mighty_a disorder_n as_o be_v a_o abuse_n of_o that_o liberty_n with_o which_o he_o be_v entrust_v and_o a_o contradiction_n to_o that_o natural_a inclination_n with_o which_o he_o be_v endue_v by_o his_o maker_n by_o this_o mean_v the_o tone_n of_o his_o spirit_n be_v as_o it_o be_v immediate_o relaxd_v the_o will_v corrupt_v the_o natural_a propension_n of_o the_o soul_n towards_o god_n and_o goodness_n weaken_a and_o a_o contrary_a disposition_n perhaps_o introduce_v the_o appetite_n and_o passion_n which_o be_v make_v to_o be_v rule_v have_v once_o break_v loose_a from_o the_o government_n they_o be_v place_v under_o be_v apt_a thenceforward_a to_o become_v impetuous_a and_o arbitrary_a the_o understanding_n have_v be_v once_o mislead_v or_o over_o rule_v be_v for_o the_o future_a less_o able_a to_o discern_v clear_o or_o to_o judge_v impartial_o in_o a_o word_n innocency_n and_o integrity_n be_v lose_v every_o repeat_v act_n strengthen_v the_o evil_a habit_n and_o increase_v the_o disorder_n which_o be_v thus_o unhappy_o begin_v in_o all_o the_o faculty_n if_o the_o man_n continue_v to_o be_v a_o sinner_n only_o in_o a_o low_a degree_n he_o will_v find_v a_o perpetual_a struggle_n and_o conflict_n within_o his_o breast_n his_o understanding_n and_o reason_n and_o conscience_n direct_v and_o lead_v he_o one_o way_n whilst_o his_o appetite_n and_o passion_n hurry_v he_o the_o other_o 7.23_o rom._n 7.23_o the_o law_n in_o his_o member_n war_a against_o the_o law_n in_o his_o mind_n and_o for_o the_o most_o part_n bring_v he_o into_o captivity_n he_o neither_o approve_v what_o he_o do_v nor_o find_v himself_o at_o all_o dispose_v to_o do_v what_o he_o approve_v wretched_a man_n that_o he_o be_v and_o if_o he_o be_v grow_v a_o harden_v sinner_n he_o be_v still_o the_o more_o wretched_a because_o more_o incurable_a though_o at_o the_o same_o time_n less_o sensible_a of_o his_o evil_a condition_n and_o all_o this_o while_n he_o be_v exceed_o estrange_v and_o alienate_v from_o god_n the_o author_n of_o his_o be_v and_o the_o fountain_n
frustrate_v and_o render_v ineffectual_a by_o they_o and_o be_v not_o this_o a_o deplorable_a state_n and_o such_o as_o may_v well_o move_v a_o god_n of_o infinite_a goodness_n to_o find_v out_o and_o appoint_v some_o more_o effectual_a method_n for_o the_o recovery_n of_o this_o his_o ruine_a creation_n can_v he_o do_v we_o think_v look_v on_o and_o behold_v the_o great_a enemy_n both_o of_o himself_o and_o his_o creation_n thus_o insult_v and_o triumph_v the_o most_o excellent_a creature_n he_o have_v in_o this_o low_a region_n thus_o abuse_v and_o spoil_v and_o as_o the_o consequence_n thereof_o the_o whole_a inferior_a creation_n in_o disorder_n and_o confusion_n and_o not_o interpose_v in_o some_o extraordinary_a and_o surprise_v manner_n but_o this_o will_v still_o appear_v more_o become_v the_o divine_a nature_n if_o we_o inquire_v in_o the_o last_o place_n how_o man_n be_v draw_v into_o the_o commission_n of_o sin_n the_o case_n as_o represent_v by_o moses_n which_o be_v what_o the_o christian_a revelation_n take_v for_o grant_v be_v certain_o very_o compassionable_a that_o our_o first_o parent_n be_v set_v upon_o whilst_o they_o be_v as_o yet_o unexperienced_a by_o a_o subtle_a and_o malicious_a enemy_n who_o make_v his_o attack_n first_o upon_o the_o weak_a sex_n and_o by_o she_o prevail_v upon_o the_o man_n inveigle_v they_o by_o a_o sly_a and_o false_a suggestion_n artificial_o represent_v make_v use_n of_o their_o sensitive_a power_n to_o bafflle_v their_o intellectual_a impose_v upon_o their_o understanding_n by_o craft_n and_o confidence_n and_o persuade_v they_o on_o a_o sudden_a without_o consult_v either_o god_n or_o their_o own_o reason_n to_o do_v a_o rash_a and_o dangerous_a act_n by_o which_o they_o expose_v both_o themselves_o and_o their_o posterity_n to_o all_o the_o evil_a consequence_n which_o either_o natural_o or_o judicial_o follow_v but_o wave_v this_o though_o without_o consider_v it_o as_o a_o divine_a revelation_n it_o be_v most_o reasonable_a to_o suppose_v that_o the_o general_a corruption_n of_o humane_a nature_n begin_v in_o some_o such_o way_n wave_v this_o i_o say_v and_o take_v humane_a nature_n as_o it_o appear_v the_o circumstance_n of_o sinner_n will_v still_o seem_v very_o compassionable_a for_o although_o man_n be_v without_o question_n make_v upright_o yet_o be_v endue_v with_o liberty_n he_o must_v at_o the_o very_o best_a as_o i_o before_o observe_v be_v fallible_a and_o mutable_a his_o immaterial_a spirit_n be_v join_v to_o a_o body_n of_o flesh_n and_o place_v in_o the_o midst_n of_o abundance_n of_o sensible_a object_n that_o it_o may_v be_v capable_a of_o a_o trial_n and_o though_o it_o may_v have_v many_o advantage_n in_o its_o uncorrupt_a state_n which_o at_o present_a it_o want_v yet_o still_o it_o be_v liable_a to_o be_v impose_v upon_o and_o draw_v in_o those_o who_o first_o sin_v may_v very_o well_o be_v suppose_v to_o have_v do_v it_o before_o their_o good_a habit_n be_v confirm_v by_o experience_n and_o use_v and_o that_o consequent_o there_o be_v somewhat_o of_o surprise_n as_o well_o as_o some_o degree_n of_o inconsiderateness_n and_o rashness_n in_o the_o action_n and_o those_o who_o have_v since_o grow_v up_o as_o all_o but_o our_o first_o parent_n must_v have_v do_v from_o a_o state_n of_o infancy_n be_v still_o in_o hard_a circumstance_n their_o bodily_a temper_n which_o have_v a_o great_a influence_n upon_o the_o mind_n can_v be_v no_o better_o than_o what_o their_o parent_n can_v communicate_v their_o sense_n be_v for_o many_o year_n busy_o exercise_v before_o their_o reason_n be_v thorough_o awake_a they_o be_v surround_v with_o all_o manner_n of_o temptation_n and_o they_o see_v abundance_n of_o dangerous_a example_n in_o a_o degenerate_a world_n they_o be_v for_o a_o long_a time_n weak_a and_o unexperienced_a and_o many_o of_o they_o over_o and_o above_o betray_v by_o a_o untoward_a or_o a_o careless_a education_n it_o be_v true_a not_o one_o of_o all_o these_o consideration_n will_v excuse_v the_o sinner_n and_o that_o for_o this_o plain_a reason_n because_o the_o first_o sinner_n whosever_v he_o be_v be_v suppose_v to_o be_v make_v upright_o it_o be_v not_o to_o be_v conceive_v he_o can_v have_v fall_v but_o by_o neglect_v to_o depend_v upon_o his_o maker_n and_o apply_v himself_o to_o he_o for_o a_o intellectual_a creature_n not_o to_o depend_v upon_o god_n and_o apply_v itself_o to_o he_o upon_o all_o occasion_n be_v a_o inexcusable_a fault_n and_o have_v those_o who_o first_o consent_v to_o iniquity_n do_v but_o thus_o much_o it_o be_v very_o reasonable_a to_o believe_v that_o the_o god_n who_o make_v they_o will_v have_v afford_v they_o his_o assistance_n nay_o as_o i_o hope_v to_o show_v in_o the_o progress_n of_o these_o discourse_n even_o now_o under_o all_o the_o disadvantage_n we_o be_v bear_v into_o the_o world_n and_o bring_v up_o with_o god_n have_v make_v such_o provision_n through_o jesus_n christ_n that_o nothing_o but_o a_o wilful_a and_o unaccountable_a neglect_n of_o god_n can_v ruin_v we_o here_o begin_v the_o apostasy_n and_o the_o misery_n of_o mankind_n and_o in_o the_o same_o way_n they_o be_v still_o continue_v viz._n in_o man_n neglect_v to_o depend_v upon_o and_o look_v up_o to_o that_o god_n who_o never_o forsake_v any_o of_o his_o creature_n till_o they_o first_o forsake_v he_o so_o that_o what_o i_o have_v allege_v under_o this_o last_o head_n do_v not_o excuse_v the_o sinner_n but_o yet_o which_o be_v what_o i_o allege_v it_o for_o it_o render_v his_o case_n exceed_o compassionable_a to_o a_o god_n of_o infinite_a goodness_n and_o mercy_n the_o sum_n of_o all_o i_o have_v say_v upon_o this_o argument_n be_v that_o this_o be_v a_o credible_a say_n that_o christ_n jesus_n come_v into_o the_o world_n to_o save_v sinner_n for_o if_o sinner_n be_v such_o creature_n as_o i_o have_v represent_v they_o both_z before_z and_o since_o their_o apostasy_n it_o can_v but_o be_v credible_a that_o he_o who_o make_v they_o shall_v appoint_v some_o way_n for_o their_o recovery_n and_o though_o we_o can_v not_o be_v full_o assure_v of_o this_o without_o a_o revelation_n much_o less_o can_v have_v think_v of_o the_o method_n which_o it_o have_v please_v god_n to_o take_v yet_o as_o we_o may_v natural_o hope_v that_o god_n will_v extend_v his_o compassion_n to_o we_o so_o we_o have_v all_o the_o reason_n in_o the_o world_n ready_o to_o accept_v a_o revelation_n which_o assure_v we_o that_o god_n have_v do_v it_o what_o the_o way_n and_o method_n of_o our_o salvation_n be_v our_o text_n tell_v we_o and_o this_o will_v fall_v under_o consideration_n in_o my_o follow_a discourse_n i_o be_o sensible_a there_o be_v one_o objection_n which_o upon_o hear_v the_o present_a discourse_n may_v arise_v in_o the_o mind_n of_o man_n who_o think_v serious_o and_o be_v not_o dispose_v to_o cavil_v viz._n if_o the_o case_n of_o humane_a nature_n be_v so_o deplorable_a and_o compassionable_a how_o come_v it_o to_o pass_v that_o so_o small_a a_o part_n of_o mankind_n have_v receive_v benefit_n even_o from_o the_o christian_a revelation_n this_o difficulty_n i_o will_v have_v consider_v in_o this_o lecture_n if_o there_o have_v be_v room_n for_o it_o but_o be_v prevent_v i_o shall_v not_o forget_v it_o but_o assign_v it_o
