herein_o we_o have_v answer_v from_o corrupt_a nature_n itself_o this_o suggest_v such_o lewdness_n to_o they_o while_o they_o sin_v against_o nature_n in_o the_o creation_n of_o it_o they_o sin_n all_o the_o affliction_n of_o god_n people_n there_o be_v a_o intermixture_n and_o temperament_n of_o love_n and_o favour_n which_o show_v itself_o in_o they_o the_o cup_n be_v full_a of_o mixture_n to_o they_o as_o may_v be_v make_v good_a in_o sundry_a particular_n which_o be_v ingredient_n into_o it_o as_o first_o of_o all_o there_o be_v a_o mixture_n of_o strength_n and_o patience_n for_o they_o many_o blessing_n together_o with_o they_o which_o he_o do_v comfort_v they_o withal_o he_o turn_v his_o anger_n away_o and_o do_v not_o stir_v up_o all_o his_o wrath_n as_o it_o be_v in_o psal_n 78.38_o but_o as_o in_o one_o kind_n he_o bring_v evil_a so_o in_o another_o kind_n he_o bring_v good_a with_o it_o his_o work_n be_v checker-work_n as_o we_o may_v so_o call_v it_o of_o black_a and_o white_a indeed_o this_o mixture_n be_v not_o always_o so_o take_v notice_n of_o by_o they_o as_o it_o be_v fit_v to_o be_v no_o if_o at_o any_o time_n we_o have_v any_o trouble_n or_o engage_v to_o obedience_n this_o be_v such_o as_o they_o be_v unacquainted_a with_o it_o and_o but_o ignorant_a of_o it_o which_o be_v a_o peace_n and_o joy_n above_o all_o that_o the_o world_n can_v confer_v three_o the_o spirituality_n of_o holy_a exercise_n and_o duty_n of_o piety_n carnal_a person_n they_o be_v ignorant_a of_o this_o likewise_o they_o can_v come_v off_o with_o some_o external_a performance_n as_o prayer_n and_o read_v and_o hear_v of_o the_o word_n and_o the_o like_a so_o far_o as_o they_o concern_v the_o outward_a man_n and_o as_o they_o be_v to_o be_v do_v by_o that_o but_o to_o perform_v they_o after_o a_o spiritual_a manner_n and_o to_o enjoy_v communion_n with_o god_n himself_o in_o the_o performance_n of_o they_o this_o be_v that_o which_o be_v a_o riddle_n to_o they_o and_o they_o understand_v not_o nor_o know_v not_o what_o to_o make_v of_o it_o a_o natural_a man_n he_o know_v not_o what_o belong_v to_o the_o spirit_n of_o adoption_n and_o to_o the_o go_v to_o god_n as_o to_o a_o father_n in_o christ_n he_o know_v not_o what_o belong_v to_o the_o improvement_n of_o faith_n and_o to_o the_o get_n of_o strength_n in_o his_o inward_a man_n occasional_o from_o those_o duty_n of_o christianity_n which_o be_v perform_v by_o he_o as_o a_o man_n receive_v strength_n in_o his_o body_n from_o that_o nourishment_n which_o be_v convey_v in_o his_o meat_n four_o the_o exactness_n of_o christian_a obedience_n and_o the_o inward_a life_n and_o power_n of_o religion_n this_o be_v also_o a_o secret_a and_o mystery_n to_o a_o unregenerate_a spirit_n a_o natural_a man_n he_o may_v conform_v to_o some_o good_a thing_n in_o religion_n which_o carry_v no_o great_a difficulty_n in_o they_o and_o which_o do_v not_o cross_v he_o in_o his_o dear_a lust_n but_o as_o for_o other_o he_o be_v more_o weak_a and_o indispose_v the_o precept_n of_o self-denial_n and_o mortification_n and_o repentance_n and_o the_o trade_n of_o piety_n in_o holiness_n and_o righteousness_n of_o life_n and_o conversation_n these_o be_v more_o grievous_a to_o he_o faith_n and_o patience_n and_o love_n of_o enemy_n and_o forbearance_n of_o revenge_n and_o such_o thing_n as_o these_o the_o more_o refine_a and_o sublime_a part_n of_o religion_n as_o consist_v in_o such_o matter_n as_o these_o be_v this_o be_v such_o as_o a_o carnal_a heart_n do_v very_o much_o stumble_v at_o and_o be_v offend_v with_o it_o five_o perseverance_n and_o continuance_n in_o the_o faith_n and_o profession_n of_o christianity_n notwithstanding_o all_o adventure_n in_o the_o multitude_n and_o violence_n of_o temptation_n in_o the_o change_n and_o variation_n of_o providence_n still_o to_o abide_v and_o remain_v the_o same_o and_o to_o hold_v out_o and_o to_o persist_v unto_o the_o end_n without_o decline_v or_o go_v backward_o or_o fall_v away_o this_o be_v that_o also_o which_o a_o natural_a man_n understand_v not_o but_o be_v much_o to_o seek_v and_o very_o which_o the_o natural_a man_n know_v not_o what_o to_o make_v of_o nor_o can_v persuade_v himself_o that_o they_o be_v in_o reality_n last_o take_v this_o work_n of_o grace_n also_o in_o the_o reward_n of_o it_o and_o as_o it_o be_v swallow_v up_o in_o glory_n and_o it_o be_v very_o intricate_a and_o mysterious_a here_o also_o especial_o to_o such_o kind_n of_o person_n as_o they_o know_v not_o whence_o this_o wind_n come_v so_o neither_o whither_o it_o go_v nor_o what_o it_o tend_v to_o in_o the_o bless_a fruit_n and_o effect_n and_o consequence_n of_o it_o carnal_a person_n they_o common_o think_v of_o heaven_n as_o of_o a_o carnal_a place_n and_o as_o of_o a_o carnal_a condition_n a_o fool_n paradise_n such_o as_o turk_n and_o pagan_n and_o infidel_n fancy_n to_o themselves_o or_o at_o least_o in_o some_o affinity_n and_o nearness_n thereunto_o they_o be_v not_o partaker_n nor_o any_o way_n discerner_n of_o the_o glory_n that_o be_v to_o be_v reveal_v thus_o we_o see_v how_o as_o to_o all_o particular_n as_o concern_v the_o work_n of_o regeneration_n such_o person_n as_o be_v themselves_o unregenerate_a and_o but_o in_o the_o state_n of_o nature_n be_v ignorant_a and_o inapprehensive_a of_o it_o now_o there_o be_v a_o double_a account_n which_o may_v be_v give_v hereof_o unto_o we_o the_o one_o be_v take_v from_o the_o impotency_n of_o humane_a reason_n and_o the_o other_o be_v take_v from_o the_o indisposition_n of_o nature_n corrupt_v first_o humane_a reason_n be_v impotent_a and_o unable_a to_o reach_v such_o a_o business_n as_o this_o be_v we_o do_v here_o suppose_v that_o many_o natural_a and_o unregenerate_a man_n they_o have_v notwithstanding_o sometime_o great_a part_n and_o ability_n of_o humane_a wit_n and_o sagacity_n in_o they_o whereby_o they_o be_v able_a to_o dive_v into_o many_o great_a mystery_n and_o profundity_n of_o nature_n yea_o but_o they_o be_v not_o able_a for_o all_o this_o to_o dive_v into_o the_o work_n of_o grace_n nor_o to_o comprehend_v the_o mystery_n of_o religion_n which_o be_v far_o above_o they_o and_o superior_a to_o they_o second_o as_o from_o the_o impotency_n of_o reason_n so_o also_o from_o the_o corruption_n of_o nature_n which_o make_v reason_n more_o impotent_a and_o blind_a than_o otherwise_o it_o will_v be_v wicked_a man_n they_o do_v not_o understand_v the_o work_n of_o grace_n because_o they_o be_v stranger_n to_o it_o they_o have_v their_o under_o stand_v darken_v and_o so_o be_v alienate_v from_o the_o life_n of_o god_n through_o the_o ignorance_n that_o be_v in_o they_o because_o of_o the_o blindness_n their_o heart_n as_o the_o apostle_n himself_o give_v we_o a_o account_n of_o they_o ephes_n 4.18_o there_o be_v not_o only_o a_o blindness_n of_o the_o mind_n but_o also_o a_o perverseness_n of_o the_o will_n which_o have_v a_o influence_n
christ_n there_o must_v not_o be_v only_o a_o enlighten_v of_o their_o understanding_n but_o likewise_o a_o draw_v of_o their_o heart_n and_o this_o be_v the_o work_n of_o god_n alone_o also_o it_o be_v he_o only_o who_o can_v so_o frame_v man_n spirit_n as_o that_o they_o shall_v be_v willing_a to_o come_v off_o to_o christ_n term_n and_o to_o take_v upon_o he_o his_o own_o condition_n in_o which_o he_o be_v offer_v unto_o they_o therefore_o let_v we_o learn_v from_o hence_o to_o give_v he_o the_o honour_n and_o glory_n of_o all_o and_o to_o acknowledge_v his_o free_a grace_n and_o death_n and_o damnation_n because_o no_o man_n can_v give_v that_o which_o be_v not_o his_o own_o and_o proper_a to_o he_o to_o give_v but_o these_o i_o do_v but_o only_a name_n unto_o you_o not_o intend_v to_o insist_v upon_o they_o as_o be_v not_o such_o as_o be_v chief_o propound_v so_o much_o may_v serve_v for_o the_o first_o general_n viz._n a_o account_n of_o the_o comer_n to_o christ_n think_v they_o may_v not_o come_v to_o christ_n and_o be_v sometime_o teach_v so_o to_o think_v because_o they_o be_v not_o humble_v in_o so_o deep_a and_o large_a a_o manner_n as_o some_o other_o be_v now_o for_o this_o we_o must_v know_v that_o this_o be_v a_o very_a great_a mistake_n in_o they_o and_o it_o be_v contradict_v by_o this_o present_a text_n before_o we_o him_n that_o come_v i_o will_v in_o no_o wise_a cast_v out_o when_o the_o promise_n be_v make_v to_o the_o come_n not_o to_o the_o preparation_n he_o that_o be_v so_o far_o humble_v as_o to_o come_v he_o shall_v find_v grace_n and_o acceptance_n with_o christ_n and_o may_v expect_v it_o and_o look_v for_o so_o much_o from_o he_o as_o for_o the_o preparatory_a work_n of_o humiliation_n it_o be_v different_a in_o several_a person_n according_a to_o their_o several_a temper_n disposition_n conversation_n and_o future_a employment_n that_o which_o we_o be_v principal_o to_o mind_n and_o to_o apply_v ourselves_o to_o be_v the_o thing_n itself_o which_o be_v the_o sight_n of_o our_o own_o vileness_n and_o emptiness_n and_o insufficiency_n a_o apprehension_n of_o the_o necessity_n of_o christ_n and_o grace_n by_o he_o a_o willingness_n to_o leave_v our_o sin_n and_o to_o close_v with_o christ_n upon_o his_o own_o condition_n where_o these_o thing_n be_v real_o and_o in_o good_a earnest_n wrought_v in_o we_o we_o need_v not_o much_o to_o trouble_v ourselves_o about_o any_o thing_n else_o this_o be_v that_o which_o undo_v many_o people_n in_o this_o particular_a in_o that_o they_o think_v to_o be_v accept_v with_o christ_n from_o somewhat_o in_o themselves_o the_o smallness_n of_o their_o sin_n and_o the_o greatness_n of_o their_o humiliation_n and_o their_o legal_a performance_n whereas_o alas_o this_o be_v not_o the_o matter_n nor_o that_o which_o god_n do_v so_o much_o look_v at_o the_o lord_n do_v not_o pardon_v any_o sin_n because_o it_o be_v small_a but_o because_o he_o delight_v in_o pardon_n and_o because_o ercy_n please_v he_o mic._n 7.18_o no_o the_o lord_n do_v not_o pardon_v any_o sin_n because_o he_o have_v so_o much_o forrow_n and_o grief_n and_o trouble_v of_o in_o this_o present_a text_n to_o come_v to_o christ_n and_o desire_v he_o to_o rule_v they_o to_o cast_v off_o those_o sinful_a affection_n and_o defy_v and_o complacency_n which_o be_v in_o they_o and_o to_o be_v willing_a to_o have_v better_a heart_n bestow_v upon_o they_o those_o that_o come_v to_o christ_n thus_o it_o be_v no_o matter_n what_o they_o have_v be_v former_o he_o will_v in_o further_a considerable_a that_o this_o opinion_n of_o we_o have_v in_o it_o the_o great_a safety_n and_o freedom_n from_o spiritual_a danger_n while_o that_o which_o it_o take_v from_o nature_n it_o now_o since_o the_o time_n of_o your_o conversion_n and_o regeneration_n and_o come_v home_o to_o god_n second_o now_o since_o the_o commission_n of_o your_o sin_n and_o the_o intermission_n or_o the_o withdraw_n of_o the_o temptation_n three_o now_o since_o the_o experience_n of_o god_n goodness_n and_o the_o sense_n and_o apprehension_n of_o his_o special_a love_n and_o favour_n towards_o you_o since_o these_o all_z or_o either_o of_o these_o you_o be_v now_o ashamed_a of_o those_o thing_n which_o former_o have_v no_o impression_n upon_o you_o or_o at_o lest_o which_o you_o do_v not_o look_v upon_o as_o any_o great_a matter_n of_o shame_n unto_o you_o first_o i_o say_v now_o that_o be_v since_o the_o time_n of_o your_o conversion_n and_o regeneration_n and_o come_v home_o to_o god_n conversion_n as_o it_o make_v a_o change_n in_o a_o man_n condition_n so_o also_o in_o his_o affection_n it_o make_v he_o to_o have_v other_o thought_n and_o apprehension_n than_o former_o he_o have_v and_o in_o particular_a in_o point_n of_o shame_n he_o be_v a_o shame_v of_o those_o thing_n which_o before_o he_o do_v not_o regard_v and_o whereas_o before_o sin_n be_v nothing_o with_o he_o now_o he_o look_v upon_o it_o as_o the_o great_a reproach_n can_v befall_v he_o a_o man_n after_o conversion_n will_v be_v ashamed_a and_o confound_v in_o himself_o for_o those_o way_n which_o he_o walk_v in_o before_o thus_o it_o be_v here_o with_o these_o roman_n yea_o thus_o it_o be_v with_o the_o apostle_n paul_n himself_o when_o he_o look_v back_o sometime_o upon_o his_o former_a condition_n before_o his_o conversion_n he_o be_v ashamed_a to_o think_v of_o it_o and_o he_o speak_v of_o it_o with_o a_o great_a deal_n of_o abhorrency_n and_o indignation_n as_o we_o may_v see_v ashamed_a of_o it_o he_o see_v sin_n in_o its_o colour_n and_o in_o its_o nature_n what_o it_o be_v by_o the_o light_n of_o god_n spirit_n assist_v he_o and_o enable_v of_o he_o so_o to_o do_v which_o another_o do_v not_o it_o be_v a_o good_a observation_n of_o chrysostom_n which_o he_o have_v to_o this_o purpose_n 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d etc._n etc._n every_o sin_n do_v then_o indeed_o he_o go_v on_o these_o roman_n when_o they_o â—â—ere_v here_o convert_v the_o apostle_n dare_v appeal_v to_o themselves_o and_o needs_o no_o other_o witness_n beside_o for_o the_o confirmation_n of_o that_o which_o he_o say_v if_o people_n have_v but_o the_o same_o thought_n of_o sin_n in_o the_o commit_n as_o they_o be_v likely_a to_o have_v after_o it_o they_o will_v never_o be_v guilty_a of_o it_o there_o be_v a_o double_a light_n which_o be_v communicate_v to_o a_o christian_a as_o pertinent_a to_o this_o purpose_n the_o one_o be_v whereby_o he_o see_v the_o filthiness_n of_o sin_n itself_o and_o the_o other_o be_v whereby_o he_o see_v himself_o as_o guilty_a of_o sin_n where_o either_o of_o these_o be_v want_v there_o be_v not_o this_o shame_n which_o we_o now_o speak_v of_o no_o more_o than_o a_o blind_a man_n be_v with_o those_o spot_n which_o be_v upon_o his_o garment_n but_o where_o both_o these_o concur_v there_o be_v blush_v and_o shame_n of_o heart_n and_o thus_o in_o a_o person_n convert_v second_o this_o shamefacedness_n do_v arise_v from_o a_o serious_a and_o due_a apprehension_n of_o the_o omniscience_n and_o omnipresence_n of_o god_n those_o which_o many_o time_n be_v not_o much_o ashamed_a of_o thing_n simple_o consider_v in_o themselves_o yet_o when_o they_o think_v they_o be_v take_v notice_n of_o by_o other_o this_o be_v a_o mean_n to_o
