know_v that_o when_o he_o shall_v appear_v we_o shall_v be_v like_o he_o and_o that_o these_o vile_a body_n shall_v be_v conform_v to_o his_o glorious_a body_n phil._n 3.21_o and_o this_o shall_v it_o to_o be_v eclipse_v and_o overshadow_a with_o the_o similitude_n of_o sinful_a flesh_n and_o to_o be_v humble_v under_o the_o form_n of_o a_o servant_n even_o as_o the_o brightness_n of_o a_o candle_n be_v hide_v in_o a_o dark_a and_o close_a lantern_n so_o that_o declaratory_o he_o be_v in_o that_o respect_n exalt_v he_o be_v declare_v to_o be_v the_o son_n of_o god_n by_o power_n in_o rise_v from_o the_o dead_a and_o return_v to_o his_o glory_n as_o for_o the_o humane_a nature_n that_o be_v proper_o exalt_v for_o be_v join_v to_o the_o godhead_n it_o have_v a_o ample_a and_o immediate_a claim_n to_o all_o the_o glory_n which_o from_o the_o godhead_n may_v be_v communicate_v to_o it_o and_o confer_v upon_o it_o so_o that_o however_o while_o our_o saviour_n christ_n continue_v here_o the_o exigence_n of_o the_o condition_n and_o the_o office_n which_o he_o have_v assume_v and_o undertake_v make_v he_o a_o man_n of_o sorrow_n and_o of_o suffering_n and_o intercept_v as_o it_o be_v the_o beam_n of_o the_o divine_a glory_n from_o shine_v in_o the_o other_o nature_n so_o that_o there_o be_v no_o form_n nor_o beauty_n in_o he_o yet_o have_v finish_v that_o dispensation_n there_o be_v by_o virtue_n of_o the_o intimate_a association_n of_o the_o manhood_n with_o the_o godhead_n a_o give_v out_o or_o a_o communication_n of_o all_o the_o glory_n from_o the_o deity_n which_o the_o other_o nature_n be_v capable_a of_o and_o this_o be_v that_o which_o jesus_n christ_n desire_v of_o his_o father_n in_o my_o text_n and_o even_o as_o by_o the_o spirit_n of_o holiness_n he_o be_v fill_v with_o treasure_n of_o wisdom_n and_o knowledge_n and_o grace_n and_o thereby_o fit_v for_o the_o office_n of_o a_o mediator_n and_o make_v the_o head_n and_o ruler_n of_o the_o church_n so_o likewise_o by_o the_o spirit_n of_o glory_n he_o be_v fill_v with_o unmatchable_a perfection_n beyond_o the_o comprehension_n of_o all_o other_o creature_n be_v not_o only_o full_a of_o glory_n but_o have_v in_o he_o all_o the_o fullness_n of_o glory_n which_o a_o create_a nature_n join_v to_o a_o infinite_a and_o endless_a fountain_n can_v receive_v the_o godhead_n of_o our_o saviour_n be_v at_o the_o right_a hand_n of_o the_o father_n from_o eternity_n but_o now_o the_o manhood_n of_o our_o saviour_n be_v exalt_v to_o the_o same_o condition_n i_o say_v not_o to_o the_o same_o measure_n but_o to_o the_o same_o condition_n of_o majesty_n and_o glory_n with_o it_o god_n have_v raise_v he_o from_o the_o dead_a and_o that_o you_o know_v must_v be_v be_v name_v not_o only_o in_o this_o world_n but_o in_o that_o which_o be_v to_o come_v in_o which_o respect_n it_o be_v that_o god_n will_v have_v he_o worship_v with_o divine_a and_o religious_a adoration_n and_o that_o by_o the_o very_a angel_n heb._n 1.6_o of_o which_o the_o humane_a nature_n single_a be_v not_o capable_a but_o that_o it_o shine_v with_o the_o godhead_n in_o this_o high_a glory_n much_o may_v be_v add_v for_o the_o proof_n of_o this_o that_o even_o the_o manhood_n of_o our_o saviour_n participate_v of_o the_o glory_n whereof_o etc._n etc._n now_o to_o open_v it_o a_o little_a more_o particular_o and_o distinct_o to_o you_o belove_a you_o must_v know_v that_o the_o manhood_n of_o our_o saviour_n come_v not_o by_o nature_n to_o partake_v of_o this_o glory_n look_v upon_o the_o humane_a nature_n as_o consider_v in_o itself_o and_o so_o it_o have_v no_o right_a to_o it_o it_o be_v by_o grace_n then_o that_o the_o glory_n of_o the_o godhead_n be_v communicate_v to_o it_o and_o that_o by_o a_o double_a grace_n the_o grace_n of_o union_n and_o the_o grace_n of_o dispensation_n first_o the_o manhood_n of_o our_o saviour_n participate_v of_o the_o glory_n of_o person_n for_o so_o the_o god_n head_n and_o the_o manhood_n as_o you_o know_v be_v join_v together_o in_o such_o a_o tie_n as_o can_v full_o be_v express_v not_o as_o a_o man_n and_o a_o wife_n be_v join_v together_o who_o notwithstanding_o their_o conjunction_n continue_v two_o distinct_a person_n but_o as_o the_o body_n and_o the_o soul_n make_v one_o man_n so_o god_n and_o man_n make_v one_o christ_n and_o as_o the_o glory_n of_o the_o soul_n by_o reason_n of_o the_o nearness_n of_o the_o union_n redound_v to_o the_o glory_n of_o the_o person_n and_o consequent_o of_o the_o body_n too_o even_o so_o the_o glory_n of_o the_o godhead_n redound_v to_o the_o glory_n of_o the_o manhood_n in_o the_o person_n of_o our_o saviour_n so_o infinite_o near_o be_v the_o conjunction_n that_o both_o the_o nature_n can_v choose_v but_o share_v together_o and_o as_o the_o godhead_n be_v in_o some_o respect_n abase_v in_o be_v join_v to_o the_o manhood_n be_v eclipse_v and_o shadow_v with_o the_o meanness_n and_o the_o imperfection_n of_o it_o even_o so_o the_o manhood_n on_o the_o other_o side_n be_v honour_v and_o advance_v in_o be_v join_v to_o the_o godhead_n and_o consequent_o shine_v with_o the_o glory_n of_o it_o second_o the_o manhood_n of_o our_o saviour_n participate_v of_o the_o glory_n of_o the_o godhead_n by_o the_o grace_n of_o dispensation_n from_o the_o father_n he_o have_v make_v it_o to_o partake_v of_o that_o glory_n and_o therefore_o he_o have_v raise_v it_o up_o and_o set_v it_o at_o his_o own_o right_a hand_n he_o have_v high_o exalt_v it_o he_o have_v 2.9_o not_o that_o the_o godhead_n be_v confine_v or_o circumscribe_v within_o the_o narrow_a limit_n of_o our_o saviour_n flesh_n or_o that_o his_o body_n be_v co-extended_n with_o the_o godhead_n as_o ubiquitary_n dream_v but_o the_o godhead_n dwell_v in_o christ_n as_o bernard_n speak_v not_o umbratiuè_n by_o external_a sign_n and_o shadow_n and_o token_n of_o his_o presence_n as_o once_o christ_n dwell_v in_o the_o material_a temple_n not_o effectiuè_a by_o the_o effect_n and_o operation_n of_o its_o grace_n as_o now_o it_o dwell_v in_o the_o body_n of_o the_o saint_n who_o in_o the_o
a_o wicked_a wretch_n may_v touch_v another_o man_n indeed_o and_o yet_o never_o touch_v god_n because_o he_o be_v without_o god_n there_o be_v no_o union_n between_o god_n and_o he_o but_o all_o of_o they_o by_o this_o mean_n close_o link_v together_o one_o special_a end_n of_o my_o inhabitation_n in_o believer_n past_a present_a and_o to_o come_v of_o this_o inhabitation_n in_o myself_o the_o mediator_n between_o thou_o and_o they_o be_v this_o that_o they_o may_v all_o be_v one_o yea_o that_o they_o may_v be_v perfect_a in_o one_o &_o therefore_o i_o beseech_v thou_o father_n let_v we_o have_v our_o end_n in_o this_o business_n for_o explication_n of_o the_o word_n we_o have_v three_o thing_n to_o be_v inquire_v and_o resolve_v first_o how_o christ_n as_o mediator_n be_v in_o true_a believer_n second_o how_o god_n the_o father_n be_v in_o christ_n as_o mediator_n three_o how_o the_o mediator_n be_v in_o believer_n and_o god_n the_o father_n be_v in_o the_o mediator_n do_v serve_v to_o this_o great_a end_n whereof_o our_o saviour_n speak_v viz._n to_o make_v believer_n one_o yea_o to_o make_v they_o perfect_a in_o one_o i_o in_o they_o and_o thou_o in_o i_o that_o they_o may_v be_v make_v perfect_a in_o one_o i_o shall_v be_v brief_a upon_o the_o former_a two_o because_o they_o be_v more_o easy_a to_o be_v apprehend_v and_o the_o three_o indeed_o be_v the_o main_a thing_n in_o the_o text._n as_o for_o the_o first_o of_o these_o how_o christ_n as_o mediator_n be_v in_o true_a believer_n i_o suppose_v you_o be_v not_o to_o seek_v of_o this_o he_o be_v in_o true_a believer_n by_o his_o spirit_n and_o that_o not_o by_o the_o essence_n of_o the_o spirit_n for_o so_o he_o be_v no_o more_o in_o one_o man_n then_o another_o but_o by_o the_o operation_n and_o effect_n that_o be_v the_o gift_n and_o grace_n of_o the_o spirit_n and_o especial_o by_o faith_n which_o be_v the_o grace_n that_o give_v they_o the_o denomination_n of_o believer_n and_o therefore_o christ_n be_v say_v express_o to_o dwell_v in_o the_o heart_n by_o faith_n eph._n 3.17_o as_o for_o the_o second_o thing_n propose_v how_o god_n the_o father_n be_v in_o christ_n as_o mediator_n for_o clear_v this_o you_o must_v remember_v that_o which_o have_v be_v often_o hint_v that_o god_n the_o father_n all_o along_o this_o prayer_n of_o our_o saviour_n be_v take_v for_o the_o whole_a godhead_n now_o in_o our_o saviour_n humane_a nature_n the_o whole_a godhead_n dwell_v as_o the_o apostle_n show_v col._n 2.9_o in_o he_o dwell_v all_o the_o fullness_n of_o the_o godhead_n bodily_a other_o be_v partaker_n of_o the_o divine_a nature_n as_o the_o apostle_n speak_v 2_o pet._n 1.4_o but_o he_o be_v partaker_n of_o the_o divine_a essence_n other_o be_v partaker_n of_o the_o property_n of_o god_n but_o he_o be_v partaker_n of_o the_o godhead_n itself_o other_o be_v partaker_n of_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n but_o he_o be_v partaker_n of_o the_o god_n of_o grace_n and_o therefore_o the_o apostle_n say_v not_o that_o in_o christ_n dwell_v 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d that_o be_v the_o divinity_n but_o 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d that_o be_v the_o godhead_n and_o that_o the_o fullness_n all_o the_o fullness_n of_o it_o in_o he_o dwell_v all_o the_o fullness_n of_o the_o godhead_n bodily_a because_o it_o be_v indeed_o and_o real_o unite_v to_o the_o humane_a nature_n to_o the_o body_n of_o christ_n jesus_n as_o i_o have_v somewhere_o note_v heretofore_o you_o see_v how_o christ_n be_v in_o believer_n and_o how_o god_n be_v in_o christ_n now_o for_o the_o three_o and_o last_o particular_a propose_v how_o their_o be_v each_o in_o other_o do_v serve_v to_o this_o end_n mention_v in_o my_o text_n viz._n to_o make_v believer_n one_o yea_o to_o make_v they_o perfect_a in_o one_o i_o in_o they_o and_o thou_o in_o i_o that_o they_o may_v be_v perfect_a in_o one_o this_o will_v need_v a_o little_o further_a explication_n that_o christ_n be_v in_o believer_n by_o his_o spirit_n to_o this_o end_n that_o they_o may_v be_v one_o among_o themselves_o and_o with_o the_o father_n and_o the_o son_n be_v very_o manifest_a in_o scripture_n but_o be_v god_n in_o jesus_n christ_n to_o this_o end_n yes_o my_o belove_a to_o this_o end_n god_n have_v never_o be_v in_o christ_n as_o mediator_n but_o that_o believer_n may_v be_v join_v to_o himself_o in_o and_o by_o and_o through_o christ_n true_o my_o belove_a the_o father_n have_v be_v in_o the_o son_n as_o god_n however_o so_o he_o be_v from_o everlasting_a but_o god_n have_v never_o be_v in_o christ_n as_o man_n and_o mediator_n but_o for_o effect_v this_o union_n so_o that_o as_o the_o apostle_n say_v god_n be_v in_o christ_n reconcile_n the_o world_n the_o world_n of_o believer_n so_o i_o may_v say_v as_o well_o god_n be_v in_o christ_n unite_n the_o world_n the_o same_o world_n of_o believer_n to_o himself_o original_o they_o be_v disjoint_v and_o divide_v each_o from_o other_o and_o which_o be_v worst_a of_o all_o from_o god_n but_o down_o come_v christ_n and_o dwell_v in_o all_o of_o they_o together_o and_o down_o come_v god_n and_o dwell_v in_o christ_n that_o so_o they_o may_v be_v all_o one_o i_o in_o they_o and_o thou_o in_o i_o that_o they_o may_v be_v perfect_a in_o one_o not_o only_o that_o they_o may_v be_v one_o but_o that_o they_o may_v be_v perfect_a in_o one_o what_o do_v our_o saviour_n mean_v by_o that_o expression_n that_o they_o may_v be_v perfect_a in_o one_o true_o nothing_o else_o but_o this_o as_o i_o conceive_v that_o they_o may_v so_o be_v one_o that_o there_o may_v be_v a_o perfect_a union_n there_o be_v a_o twofold_a perfection_n a_o perfection_n of_o part_n and_o a_o perfection_n of_o degree_n the_o first_o of_o these_o be_v special_o intend_v here_o that_o there_o may_v be_v a_o perfect_a union_n in_o regard_n of_o part_n that_o be_v that_o all_o the_o part_n that_o shall_v be_v join_v may_v be_v join_v together_o therefore_o be_o i_o in_o all_o of_o they_o say_v christ_n here_o and_o thou_o in_o i_o that_o be_o in_o all_o of_o they_o i_o in_o they_o and_o thou_o in_o i_o that_o they_o may_v be_v far_o as_o i_o have_v attain_v there_o may_v be_v many_o thing_n observe_v which_o have_v be_v divers_a time_n insist_v on_o from_o other_o place_n the_o doctrine_n proper_a to_o the_o text_n be_v this_o doctrine_n that_o the_o perfection_n of_o believer_n union_n stand_v in_o this_o that_o
posture_n she_o will_v be_v when_o christ_n shall_v have_v declare_v his_o father_n name_n to_o all_o the_o nation_n under_o heaven_n when_o the_o jew_n shall_v be_v convert_v and_o when_o the_o fullness_n of_o the_o gentile_n shall_v come_v in_o oh_o my_o belove_a that_o will_v be_v a_o joyful_a time_n indeed_o it_o be_v true_a those_o time_n my_o brethren_n shall_v be_v very_o comfortable_a and_o full_a of_o gladness_n many_o way_n and_o this_o be_v not_o the_o least_o that_o people_n shall_v be_v brougbt_n in_o to_o the_o knowledge_n of_o the_o lord_n out_o of_o all_o the_o quarter_n they_o behold_v the_o father_n name_n declare_v to_o the_o people_n of_o the_o jew_n and_o to_o such_o multitude_n of_o nation_n of_o the_o gentile_n so_o that_o they_o shall_v come_v throng_v in_o to_o they_o to_o this_o end_n that_o they_o may_v be_v belove_v by_o he_o or_o to_o this_o end_n that_o they_o may_v love_v he_o i_o must_v acknowledge_v all_o interpreter_n almost_o that_o i_o have_v see_v make_v they_o the_o object_n not_o the_o subject_n of_o this_o love_n that_o the_o love_n wherewith_o thou_o have_v love_v i_o may_v be_v in_o they_o that_o be_v say_v they_o may_v reach_v to_o that_o the_o love_n wherewith_o thou_o have_v love_v i_o may_v be_v in_o they_o that_o thou_o may_v love_v they_o with_o the_o love_n wherewith_o thou_o have_v love_v i_o do_v christ_n declare_v his_o father_n name_n to_o man_n his_o love_n his_o mercy_n to_o this_o end_n that_o he_o may_v love_v they_o be_v this_o a_o proper_a mean_n to_o that_o end_n for_o god_n to_o be_v make_v know_v to_o man_n declare_v it_o that_o the_o love_n wherewith_o thou_o have_v love_v i_o may_v be_v in_o they_o as_o in_o the_o subject_n of_o it_o that_o the_o love_n which_o be_v original_o in_o thyself_o as_o in_o the_o fountain_n as_o all_o other_o grace_n be_v may_v be_v communicate_v and_o dispense_v from_o thou_o to_o they_o and_o become_v inherent_a in_o they_o you_o know_v my_o brethren_n we_o be_v say_v or_o the_o love_n wherewith_o god_n love_v be_v in_o a_o sense_n in_o true_a believer_n second_o the_o declaration_n of_o the_o father_n name_n to_o they_o be_v the_o great_a mean_n that_o beget_v love_n in_o they_o doctrine_n the_o love_n which_o be_v in_o true_a believer_n come_v from_o god_n the_o love_n wherewith_o he_o love_v be_v in_o they_o say_v our_o saviour_n in_o my_o text_n viz._n by_o way_n of_o dispensation_n from_o he_o love_n be_v original_o primitive_o and_o essential_o in_o the_o lord_n and_o from_o he_o it_o be_v give_v down_o into_o the_o heart_n of_o true_a believer_n this_o be_v part_n of_o the_o divine_a nature_n which_o they_o be_v make_v partaker_n of_o as_o the_o apostle_n speak_v 2_o pet._n 1.4_o this_o be_v a_o print_n of_o his_o image_n whereby_o they_o
