understanding_n for_o we_o think_v that_o god_n sleep_v as_o long_o as_o he_o defer_v to_o relieve_v our_o misery_n and_o yet_o the_o lord_n bear_v with_o we_o thus_o far_o that_o he_o suffer_v we_o to_o pray_v with_o such_o word_n as_o savour_n somewhat_o of_o the_o infirmity_n of_o our_o nature_n the_o faithful_a then_o pray_v that_o god_n will_v arise_v or_o awake_v not_o as_o if_o he_o be_v idle_a or_o asleep_a in_o heaven_n but_o they_o rather_o acknowledge_v therein_o their_o own_o dulness_n or_o slothfulness_n in_o regard_n they_o can_v conceive_v aught_o else_o of_o god_n as_o long_o as_o he_o defer_v to_o help_v they_o notwithstanding_o howsoever_o the_o flesh_n imagine_v that_o he_o sleep_v and_o neglect_v our_o misery_n yet_o faith_n look_v high_a and_o apprehend_v his_o infinite_a power_n the_o scripture_n therefore_o be_v wont_a to_o say_v etc._n in_o what_o sense_n god_n be_v say_v to_o wake_v etc._n etc._n that_o god_n awake_v and_o put_v on_o strength_n when_o he_o manifest_v some_o testimony_n of_o his_o presence_n and_o power_n for_o without_o this_o we_o esteem_v he_o either_o idle_a or_o asleep_a now_o when_o the_o prophet_n call_v it_o the_o arm_n of_o the_o lord_n which_o be_v then_o hide_v he_o set_v it_o here_o before_o they_o as_o if_o it_o be_v present_a that_o they_o may_v conclude_v sure_o our_o enemy_n can_v not_o afflict_v we_o thus_o cruel_o if_o that_o the_o lord_n have_v not_o withdraw_v his_o arm_n and_o help_a hand_n from_o us._n we_o have_v show_v you_o the_o cause_n of_o this_o delay_n in_o chap._n 50.1_o namely_o for_o their_o revolt_n from_o god_n by_o the_o day_n of_o old_a he_o show_v that_o they_o ought_v to_o remember_v all_o the_o wonderful_a work_n which_o god_n have_v in_o former_a time_n wrought_v for_o work_n of_o old_a this_o repetition_n do_v yet_o better_a express_v that_o we_o ought_v not_o only_o to_o consider_v what_o be_v do_v yesterday_o but_o those_o thing_n also_o which_o be_v do_v long_o ago_o for_o we_o must_v extend_v our_o thought_n even_o to_o the_o most_o ancient_a generation_n that_o we_o may_v overcome_v those_o temptation_n which_o otherwise_o will_v seem_v to_o overwhelm_v us._n the_o prophet_n do_v here_o then_o gather_v together_o in_o one_o all_o the_o testimony_n of_o god_n favour_n which_o he_o have_v from_o time_n to_o time_n manifest_v to_o his_o people_n that_o if_o two_o or_o three_o be_v not_o sufficient_a yet_o at_o least_o the_o great_a number_n of_o they_o may_v whole_o confirm_v the_o faith_n of_o the_o elect_a now_o because_o it_o be_v too_o tedious_a to_o draw_v a_o long_a catalogue_n of_o all_o he_o name_v this_o first_o and_o excellent_a miracle_n among_o the_o rest_n namely_o the_o wonderful_a deliverance_n of_o the_o people_n out_o of_o egypt_n for_o by_o rahab_n i_o doubt_v not_o but_o he_o mean_v proud_a and_o cruel_a egypt_n as_o in_o the_o 87._o psalm_n i_o will_v make_v mention_n of_o rahab_n and_o babylon_n among_o those_o which_o know_v i_o also_o ezechiel_n call_v the_o king_n of_o egypt_n a_o dragon_n 29.3_o behold_v i_o come_v against_o thou_o pharaoh_n king_n of_o egypt_n the_o great_a dragon_n that_o lie_v in_o the_o midst_n of_o the_o river_n thus_o it_o sufficient_o appear_v and_o all_o in_o a_o manner_n be_v of_o the_o same_o opinion_n that_o the_o prophet_n here_o put_v they_o in_o mind_n of_o that_o strange_a deliverance_n of_o the_o people_n out_o of_o egypt_n if_o the_o pride_n and_o loftiness_n of_o egygt_n be_v at_o that_o time_n bring_v low_a if_o the_o dragon_n be_v then_o slay_v why_o shall_v we_o not_o still_o hope_v for_o the_o like_a be_v not_o thou_o that_o arm_n the_o prophet_n reason_n from_o the_o nature_n of_o god_n for_o this_o can_v be_v say_v of_o the_o arm_n of_o flesh_n the_o strength_n whereof_o be_v it_o never_o so_o great_a yet_o decay_v and_o diminish_v in_o succession_n of_o time_n milosigh_v milosigh_v milo_n who_o be_v the_o stout_a and_o strong_a among_o many_o wax_a old_a and_o look_v upon_o his_o arm_n sigh_v because_o he_o feel_v himself_o destitute_a of_o that_o force_n which_o once_o he_o enjoy_v but_o it_o be_v not_o thus_o with_o god_n for_o his_o power_n can_v never_o diminish_v
and_o yet_o live_v a_o disorder_a life_n his_o rejoice_v be_v vain_a for_o these_o two_o thing_n must_v be_v require_v together_o to_o wit_n the_o conversion_n of_o the_o heart_n together_o the_o conversion_n of_o the_o heart_n and_o the_o change_n of_o the_o life_n must_v go_v together_o and_o the_o change_n of_o the_o life_n beside_o god_n call_v we_o not_o to_o turn_v to_o he_o till_o the_o former_a revolt_n be_v amend_v for_o hypocrite_n will_v be_v well_o enough_o content_v that_o that_o which_o they_o do_v shall_v be_v praise_v so_o they_o may_v still_o be_v suffer_v to_o rot_v in_o their_o filthiness_n but_o we_o can_v have_v no_o acquaintance_n with_o god_n unless_o we_o come_v forth_o of_o ourselves_o especial_o when_o we_o have_v estrange_v ourselves_o from_o he_o by_o a_o wicked_a backslide_n god_n the_o renounce_n of_o ourselves_o go_v before_o our_o reconciliation_n with_o god_n wherefore_o the_o renounce_n of_o ourselves_o go_v before_o our_o reconciliation_n with_o god_n and_o he_o will_v have_v mercy_n this_o knit_a togerhe_a of_o the_o text_n ought_v to_o be_v diligent_o note_v for_o it_o show_v that_o man_n can_v never_o be_v bring_v to_o repentance_n repentance_n remission_n of_o sin_n must_v not_o be_v separate_v from_o the_o doctrine_n of_o repentance_n but_o by_o set_v before_o they_o the_o assurance_n of_o the_o remission_n of_o sin_n whosoever_o preach_v the_o doctrine_n of_o repentance_n then_o without_o mention_v god_n mercy_n and_o the_o free_a reconciliation_n he_o lose_v his_o labour_n for_o we_o see_v how_o our_o popish_a doctor_n think_v they_o have_v well_o discharge_v their_o duty_n when_o they_o have_v long_o insist_v upon_o the_o former_a point_n and_o yet_o in_o the_o mean_a while_n they_o do_v but_o babble_n and_o lie_v in_o preach_v this_o doctrine_n yea_o though_o they_o shall_v teach_v the_o true_a way_n to_o repentance_n yet_o will_v it_o be_v to_o small_a purpose_n see_v they_o omit_v the_o foundation_n of_o free_a remission_n of_o sin_n which_o only_o appease_v conscience_n true_o the_o guilty_a sinner_n will_v always_o flee_v the_o presence_n of_o god_n as_o we_o have_v say_v in_o another_o place_n as_o long_o as_o he_o shall_v be_v hale_v before_o his_o judgement_n seat_n to_o yield_v a_o account_n neither_o will_v he_o ever_o be_v humble_v to_o obey_v nor_o fear_n till_o his_o conscience_n be_v at_o rest_n now_o because_o it_o be_v a_o difficult_a matter_n to_o quiet_v terrify_v conscience_n isaiah_n draw_v a_o argument_n from_o the_o nature_n of_o god_n say_v describe_v god_n nature_n describe_v that_o he_o will_v be_v merciful_a and_o abundant_a in_o pardon_v the_o holy_a ghost_n insist_o long_o upon_o this_o point_n of_o doctrine_n doctrine_n why_o the_o hoâ—y_a ghost_n insist_o so_o long_o upon_o this_o doctrine_n because_o we_o always_o doubt_v whether_o god_n will_v pardon_v we_o or_o no._n for_o howsoever_o we_o have_v some_o opinion_n of_o his_o mercy_n yet_o dare_v we_o not_o persuade_v ourselves_o so_o assure_o that_o it_o belong_v unto_o we_o as_o we_o ought_v you_o see_v it_o be_v not_o without_o cause_n that_o the_o prophet_n add_v this_o member_n because_o he_o thereby_o labour_v to_o dispossess_v our_o mind_n of_o that_o tremble_a which_o be_v incident_a unto_o we_o as_o oft_o as_o we_o stand_v in_o doubt_n of_o his_o infinite_a mercy_n towards_o us._n verse_n 8._o for_o my_o thought_n be_v not_o your_o thought_n neither_o be_v your_o way_n my_o way_n say_v the_o lord_n 9_o for_o as_o the_o heaven_n be_v high_a than_o the_o earth_n so_o be_v my_o way_n high_a than_o your_o way_n and_o my_o thought_n above_o your_o thought_n we_o god_n affection_n distinguish_v from_o we_o for_o my_o thought_n this_o place_n be_v diverslie_o expound_v some_o think_v that_o man_n conversation_n be_v here_o condemn_v in_o general_a to_o the_o end_n they_o shall_v not_o please_v themselves_o therein_o nor_o flatter_v themselves_o in_o their_o vice_n because_o there_o be_v no_o access_n unto_o god_n unless_o we_o be_v empty_v of_o this_o vain_a opinion_n of_o our_o own_o righteousness_n for_o none_o will_v seek_v after_o the_o physician_n but_o such_o as_o feel_v themselves_o vehementlie_o sick_a and_o that_o desire_v both_o the_o remedy_n and_o their_o health_n and_o therefore_o they_o compare_v this_o place_n with_o that_o in_o luk._n 16.15_o that_o which_o be_v high_o esteem_v before_o man_n be_v a_o abomination_n in_o the_o sight_n of_o god_n but_o i_o think_v the_o prophet_n have_v another_o meaning_n those_o therefore_o who_o think_v that_o god_n affection_n be_v here_o distinguish_v from_o humane_a affection_n expound_v it_o best_o as_o i_o think_v for_o man_n be_v wont_v to_o measure_n god_n by_o their_o own_o ell_n as_o they_o say_v and_o because_o themselves_o be_v irreconciliable_a and_o can_v not_o be_v pacify_v but_o with_o much_o ado_n they_o in_o like_a manner_n think_v that_o god_n can_v never_o be_v appease_v after_o they_o have_v once_o offend_v he_o but_o the_o lord_n show_v that_o he_o resemble_v they_o nothing_o at_o all_o as_o if_o he_o shall_v say_v i_o be_o not_o a_o mortal_a man_n that_o i_o shall_v be_v so_o severe_a and_o a_o enemy_n to_o you_o for_o ever_o no_o my_o thought_n be_v far_o unlike_o you_o for_o though_o it_o be_v impossible_a for_o you_o to_o be_v pacify_v and_o that_o it_o be_v a_o hard_a matter_n to_o bring_v you_o to_o be_v reconcile_v with_o those_o which_o have_v offend_v you_o yet_o it_o be_v not_o so_o with_o i_o i_o will_v not_o show_v myself_o so_o inhuman_a towards_o you_o to_o this_o agree_v very_o well_o that_o place_n of_o david_n psal_n 103._o where_n describe_v god_n mercy_n he_o say_v that_o it_o be_v high_a than_o the_o heaven_n be_v above_o the_o earth_n and_o though_o the_o application_n be_v to_o another_o purpose_n there_o hand_n we_o must_v impute_v it_o to_o our_o own_o unbelief_n if_o we_o obtain_v not_o pardon_v at_o god_n hand_n yet_o the_o sense_n be_v all_o one_o with_o this_o in_o a_o word_n there_o be_v none_o so_o gracious_a or_o so_o incline_v to_o mercy_n as_o the_o lord_n be_v and_o therefore_o we_o must_v impute_v it_o to_o our_o own_o diffidence_n if_o we_o obtain_v not_o pardon_v of_o he_o now_o there_o be_v nothing_o which_o trouble_v our_o conscience_n more_o than_o when_o we_o think_v god_n resemble_v we_o for_o this_o make_v we_o afraid_a to_o draw_v near_o unto_o he_o nay_o we_o rather_o flee_v from_o he_o as_o our_o enemy_n and_o can_v never_o be_v in_o any_o rest_n so_o those_o who_o measure_n god_n according_a to_o that_o which_o they_o conceive_v of_o he_o do_v indeed_o conceive_v a_o flat_a idol_n direct_o contrary_a to_o the_o nature_n of_o god_n neither_o can_v they_o do_v he_o a_o great_a dishonour_n than_o this_o be_v not_o man_n who_o be_v corrupt_a and_o stuff_v full_a with_o inordinate_a lust_n ashamed_a to_o compare_v the_o most_o pure_a nature_n of_o god_n with_o they_o and_o to_o imprison_v he_o that_o be_v infinite_a within_o so_o narrow_a bound_n wherein_o they_o feel_v themselves_o miserable_o enthrall_v for_o in_o what_o more_o noisome_a dungeon_n can_v any_o of_o we_o be_v enclose_v then_o within_o our_o own_o infidelity_n i_o take_v it_o that_o this_o be_v the_o prophet_n true_a and_o natural_a meaning_n and_o yet_o i_o deny_v not_o but_o he_o have_v some_o respect_n to_o man_n manner_n namely_o such_o as_o he_o have_v describe_v they_o in_o the_o former_a verse_n to_o be_v short_a his_o meaning_n be_v that_o man_n must_v forget_v themselves_o when_o they_o mean_v to_o turn_v to_o god_n because_o there_o be_v no_o impediment_n so_o dangerous_a as_o when_o we_o think_v he_o to_o be_v irreconciliable_a let_v we_o remove_v this_o false_a imagination_n then_o out_o of_o our_o mind_n beside_o by_o this_o place_n it_o appear_v how_o far_o they_o be_v out_o of_o the_o way_n which_o abuse_n god_n mercy_n to_o take_v the_o great_a liberty_n to_o sin_n for_o see_v how_o the_o prophet_n argue_v repent_v 8._o verse_n 7._o verse_n 8._o forsake_v your_o wicked_a way_n because_o god_n mercy_n be_v infinite_a when_o man_n doubt_v or_o despair_n whether_o they_o shall_v obtain_v pardon_n or_o no_o this_o make_v they_o more_o wicked_a and_o stubborn_a but_o the_o feel_n of_o mercy_n draw_v and_o convert_v they_o it_o follow_v then_o that_o such_o as_o neither_o forsake_v their_o lewd_a life_n nor_o change_v their_o mind_n have_v no_o part_n in_o this_o mercy_n verse_n 10._o sure_o as_o the_o rain_n in_o that_o he_o bid_v they_o to_o take_v away_o the_o stumble_a block_n he_o signify_v that_o they_o ought_v not_o to_o be_v dismay_v for_o the_o let_v and_o impediment_n that_o lay_v in_o their_o way_n for_o the_o lord_n will_v easy_o remove_v they_o in_o his_o good_a time_n out_o of_o the_o way_n of_o my_o people_n the_o hope_n of_o the_o return_n be_v include_v in_o this_o namely_o that_o after_o god_n have_v bring_v back_o his_o people_n he_o will_v again_o place_v they_o in_o the_o land_n of_o canaan_n and_o therefore_o howsoever_o for_o aught_o they_o can_v see_v there_o be_v no_o way_n nor_o passage_n leave_v for_o they_o yet_o will_v he_o provide_v one_o and_o will_v break_v all_o bar_n and_o obstacle_n why_o so_o because_o they_o have_v the_o lord_n promise_v here_o for_o their_o return_n and_o in_o deed_n it_o be_v he_o that_o bring_v they_o home_o in_o safety_n verse_n 15._o for_o thus_o say_v he_o that_o be_v high_a and_o excellent_a he_o that_o inhabit_v the_o eternity_n who_o name_n be_v the_o holy_a one_o i_o dwell_v in_o the_o high_a and_o holy_a place_n with_o he_o also_o that_o be_v of_o a_o contrite_a and_o humble_a spirit_n to_o revive_v the_o the_o captivity_n sentence_n a_o confirmation_n of_o the_o former_a sentence_n but_o this_o verse_n may_v be_v two_o way_n expound_v either_o that_o the_o prophet_n prevent_v a_o doubt_n which_o may_v fall_v into_o the_o mind_n of_o the_o faithful_a and_o so_o he_o mention_n thing_n opposite_a or_o that_o he_o draw_v a_o argument_n from_o god_n nature_n to_o confirm_v the_o heart_n of_o the_o weak_a that_o this_o may_v be_v the_o better_o understand_v and_o open_v first_o of_o all_o we_o know_v that_o our_o mind_n be_v often_o distract_v by_o such_o thought_n as_o these_o to_o wit_n that_o god_n in_o deed_n be_v in_o heaven_n but_o in_o the_o mean_a while_n there_o be_v a_o great_a distance_n between_o he_o and_o we_o and_o that_o he_o little_o regard_v we_o or_o else_o let_v thing_n go_v at_o six_o and_o seven_o in_o the_o world_n or_o that_o he_o care_v little_a or_o nothing_o for_o our_o matter_n now_o to_o correct_v this_o imagination_n the_o prophet_n grant_v it_o be_v true_a that_o god_n dwell_v on_o high_a but_o yet_o do_v not_o therefore_o cease_v to_o behold_v and_o to_o govern_v this_o world_n by_o his_o providence_n for_o he_o be_v careful_a of_o man_n salvation_n and_o dwell_v also_o with_o the_o afflict_a and_o with_o those_o that_o be_v of_o a_o contrite_a and_o break_a heart_n for_o though_o the_o lord_n be_v high_a yet_o he_o behold_v the_o lowly_a as_o it_o be_v in_o psal_n 113.3.4_o and_o 148.6_o and_o in_o other_o place_n the_o other_o sense_n be_v that_o god_n resemble_v we_o nothing_o at_o all_o for_o we_o tremble_v in_o adversity_n because_o we_o measure_v he_o according_a to_o our_o own_o capacity_n and_o thus_o we_o mutter_v how_o can_v the_o lord_n help_v we_o see_v we_o be_v overwhelm_v with_o trouble_n moreover_o the_o afflict_a be_v for_o the_o most_o part_n despise_v and_o neglect_v and_o thus_o we_o think_v that_o god_n be_v careless_a of_o we_o because_o we_o conceive_v of_o he_o according_a to_o the_o reach_n of_o our_o carnal_a reason_n but_o it_o be_v our_o part_n to_o judge_v far_o otherwise_o of_o he_o and_o therefore_o the_o prophet_n say_v that_o he_o dwelâ—_n in_o the_o heaven_n to_o signify_v that_o he_o be_v not_o subject_a to_o humane_a affection_n for_o he_o be_v always_o like_o himself_o and_o never_o change_v his_o counsel_n as_o he_o therefore_o have_v once_o promise_v to_o restore_v the_o people_n to_o their_o former_a liberty_n so_o will_v he_o assure_o perform_v it_o this_o exposition_n i_o approve_v of_o and_o yet_o rather_o accept_v of_o the_o first_o which_o be_v more_o ample_a and_o copious_a and_o also_o agree_v with_o other_o testimony_n of_o the_o holy_a scripture_n where_o these_o two_o thing_n be_v often_o conjoin_v namely_o that_o god_n dwell_v in_o heaven_n and_o yet_o have_v respect_n to_o thing_n below_o but_o especial_o of_o his_o child_n as_o i_o say_v erewhile_o dwelling_v in_o eternity_n object_n but_o we_o grovel_v on_o the_o earth_n we_o be_v unstable_a and_o never_o continue_v stay_v nor_o settle_v in_o that_o which_o we_o have_v once_o embrace_v ans_fw-fr and_o therefore_o he_o separate_v god_n from_o man_n for_o in_o he_o there_o be_v not_o so_o much_o as_o a_o shadow_n of_o turn_v james_n 1.17_o contrariwise_o we_o be_v not_o so_o affection_a as_o to_o have_v a_o perpetual_a care_n over_o such_o as_o need_v our_o help_n i_o dwell_v in_o the_o high_a and_o holy_a place_n the_o holy_a place_n be_v often_o take_v for_o the_o temple_n but_o here_o it_o be_v take_v for_o heaven_n itself_o high_a why_o god_n calâ—â—â—_n himself_o the_o press_v with_o diverse_a calamity_n but_o in_o the_o mean_a while_o they_o cease_v not_o to_o remain_v haughty_a and_o untamed_a let_v such_o never_o look_v to_o have_v god_n dwell_v with_o they_o dwell_v with_o who_o god_n will_v dwell_v for_o those_o that_o will_v expect_v any_o comfort_n from_o he_o must_v be_v right_o humble_v and_o bring_v low_a in_o their_o own_o sight_n but_o he_o stoop_v even_o to_o the_o dead_a that_o by_o inspire_v new_a life_n into_o they_o he_o may_v create_v they_o anew_o afterward_o he_o make_v express_v mention_n of_o the_o humble_a spirit_n and_o contrite_a heart_n to_o let_v we_o understand_v that_o these_o promise_n appertain_v to_o none_o that_o be_v rebellious_a and_o stiffnecked_a in_o their_o affliction_n but_o to_o such_o as_o have_v at_o last_o subdue_v all_o loftiness_n of_o spirit_n shall_v show_v themselves_o humble_a and_o meek_a verse_n 16._o for_o i_o will_v not_o contend_v for_o ever_o neither_o will_v i_o be_v always_o meet_v with_o this_o doubt_n and_o show_v that_o the_o evil_n which_o they_o be_v to_o endure_v shall_v last_v but_o for_o a_o time_n and_o that_o god_n will_v not_o always_o be_v wroth_a no_o doubt_n
