of_o death_n as_o a_o common_a evil_a incident_a to_o their_o nature_n they_o have_v no_o anticipation_n of_o danger_n till_o they_o immediate_o present_v themselves_o unto_o they_o they_o have_v no_o great_a sense_n or_o apprehension_n of_o any_o thing_n better_o than_o what_o at_o present_a they_o enjoy_v they_o be_v not_o under_o the_o obligation_n of_o any_o law_n or_o under_o the_o sense_n of_o any_o such_o thing_n and_o consequent_o the_o sincereness_n of_o what_o they_o enjoy_v not_o interrupt_v by_o the_o stroke_n of_o conscience_n under_o a_o sense_n of_o deviation_n from_o duty_n or_o gild_n 5._o it_o be_v therefore_o plain_a that_o if_o the_o humane_a nature_n have_v no_o great_a or_o better_a happiness_n than_o what_o be_v accommodate_v only_o to_o a_o sensible_a nature_n they_o have_v no_o great_a happiness_n than_o the_o beast_n have_v which_o be_v not_o reasonable_a to_o be_v suppose_v for_o a_o nature_n so_o far_o exceed_v they_o 6._o far_o yet_o if_o the_o humane_a nature_n be_v not_o under_o a_o capacity_n of_o a_o great_a happiness_n than_o what_o be_v terminate_v in_o sense_n mankind_n be_v much_o more_o unhappy_a than_o the_o base_a animal_n and_o the_o more_o excellent_a the_o humane_a nature_n be_v above_o the_o beast_n nay_o the_o more_o excellent_a any_o one_o individual_a of_o the_o humane_a kind_n be_v above_o another_o the_o more_o miserable_a he_o be_v and_o the_o more_o uncapable_a of_o be_v in_o any_o measure_n happy_a for_o the_o more_o wise_a and_o sagacious_a any_o man_n be_v the_o more_o he_o must_v needs_o be_v sensible_a of_o death_n which_o sense_n will_v sour_a all_o the_o happiness_n of_o a_o sensible_a good_a the_o more_o sensible_a he_o must_v needs_o be_v not_o only_o of_o the_o shortness_n and_o uncertainty_n of_o sensible_a enjoyment_n but_o also_o of_o their_o poorness_n emptiness_n insufficiency_n dissatisfactoriness_n it_o be_v evident_a that_o a_o fool_n set_v a_o great_a rate_n upon_o a_o sensible_a good_a than_o a_o man_n true_o wise_a and_o consequent_o the_o fool_n can_v be_v the_o only_a man_n capable_a of_o happiness_n for_o it_o be_v most_o certain_a that_o according_a to_o the_o measure_n of_o the_o esteem_n that_o any_o man_n have_v of_o any_o good_a he_o enjoy_v such_o be_v the_o measure_n of_o his_o happiness_n in_o that_o enjoyment_n since_o the_o happiness_n be_v somewhat_o that_o be_v intrinsical_v to_o the_o sense_n or_o mind_n that_o enjoy_v it_o a_o thing_n real_o good_a can_v never_o make_v that_o man_n happy_a who_o be_v under_o a_o sense_n of_o evil_a or_o inconvenience_n by_o that_o enjoyment_n so_o long_o as_o he_o be_v under_o that_o sense_n since_o therefore_o it_o be_v preposterous_a and_o unreasonable_a to_o suppose_v that_o man_n the_o best_a of_o terrestrial_a creature_n and_o wise_a man_n the_o best_a of_o man_n shall_v be_v exclude_v from_o at_o least_o a_o equal_a degree_n of_o happiness_n with_o the_o beast_n that_o perish_v and_o since_o it_o must_v needs_o be_v that_o a_o bare_a sensible_a good_a can_v never_o communicate_v to_o a_o man_n a_o equal_a degree_n of_o happiness_n with_o a_o beast_n nor_o to_o a_o wise_a man_n a_o equal_a degree_n of_o happiness_n with_o a_o fool_n it_o remain_v there_o must_v needs_o in_o common_a reason_n be_v some_o other_o subject_n wherein_o the_o happiness_n of_o a_o man_n of_o a_o wise_a man_n must_v consist_v that_o be_v not_o bare_o sensible_a good_n 7._o all_o the_o good_a thing_n of_o this_o life_n they_o be_v but_o sensible_a good_n and_o therefore_o they_o can_v be_v the_o true_a matter_n of_o that_o happiness_n which_o we_o may_v reasonable_o think_v belong_v to_o the_o reasonable_a nature_n as_o such_o the_o former_a will_v appear_v by_o a_o induction_n of_o particular_n which_o i_o shall_v pursue_v in_o order_n with_o the_o particular_a instance_n of_o their_o insufficiency_n to_o make_v up_o a_o true_a happiness_n to_o the_o reasonable_a nature_n as_o well_o as_o that_o general_a that_o they_o be_v but_o sensible_a good_n and_o mere_o accommodate_v to_o a_o sensible_a life_n and_o nature_n 1._o life_n itself_o be_v not_o as_o such_o a_o sufficient_a constituent_n of_o happiness_n and_o the_o instance_n be_v evident_a because_o it_o be_v possible_a that_o life_n itself_o may_v be_v miserable_a there_o may_v be_v life_n where_o there_o be_v sickness_n pain_n disgrace_n poverty_n and_o all_o those_o external_n occurrence_n that_o may_v render_v life_n grievous_a and_o burdensome_a life_n may_v indeed_o be_v the_o subject_a of_o happiness_n when_o it_o have_v all_o those_o contribution_n that_o concur_v to_o make_v it_o such_o but_o life_n alone_o and_o as_o such_o can_v be_v happiness_n because_o there_o may_v be_v a_o miserable_a life_n 2._o those_o bona_fw-la corporis_fw-la or_o compositi_fw-la the_o good_n of_o the_o body_n be_v not_o sufficient_a to_o make_v up_o a_o suitable_a happiness_n to_o the_o reasonable_a nature_n as_o health_n strength_n for_o the_o beast_n themselves_o enjoy_v this_o and_o for_o the_o most_o part_n the_o brute_n enjoy_v a_o great_a measure_n of_o these_o than_o mankind_n and_o beside_o still_o there_o be_v that_o which_o be_v like_o the_o worm_n at_o the_o root_n of_o the_o gourd_n that_o spoil_v the_o happiness_n that_o must_v arise_v from_o it_o viz._n mortality_n and_o death_n which_o will_v certain_o pull_v down_o this_o tabernacle_n and_o man_n have_v a_o unintermitted_a pre-apprehension_n of_o it_o which_o sower_n the_o very_a enjoyment_n itself_o and_o in_o this_o as_o have_v be_v say_v the_o beast_n that_o perish_v have_v a_o pre-eminence_n over_o mankind_n for_o though_o both_o be_v
