evident_o in_o his_o forego_n discourse_n and_o these_o when_o the_o thing_n of_o god_n spirit_n be_v propose_v to_o they_o receive_v they_o not_o but_o esteem_v they_o foolishness_n his_o three_o exception_n be_v plain_o ridiculous_a he_o say_v all_o where_o the_o gospel_n come_v shall_v understand_v and_o believe_v it_o but_o its_o thâ—se_a only_o that_o by_o the_o word_n and_o spirit_n of_o the_o gospel_n do_v believe_v and_o obey_v it_o that_o have_v this_o spiritual_a understanding_n this_o we_o plead_v that_o although_o all_o unto_o who_o they_o be_v tender_v aught_o to_o receive_v the_o thing_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n yet_o not_o unconvert_v man_n do_v so_o the_o reason_n be_v in_o part_n because_o he_o can_v understand_v they_o but_o they_o be_v foolishness_n to_o he_o and_o according_o reject_v by_o he_o and_o to_o confute_v this_o mr._n c._n tell_v we_o that_o no_o unbeliever_n have_v this_o understanding_n indeed_o but_o if_o he_o do_v believe_v and_o obey_v he_o shall_v have_v it_o as_o if_o to_o obey_v and_o believe_v the_o gospel_n be_v not_o to_o receive_v the_o thing_n of_o god_n spirit_n the_o sum_n be_v this_o if_o he_o do_v believe_v he_o may_v believe_v and_o if_o he_o be_v not_o ignorant_a he_o may_v understand_v etc._n etc._n 4._o he_o endeavour_v to_o persuade_v we_o that_o it_o be_v only_o such_o a_o understanding_n of_o gospel_n mystery_n as_o be_v proper_a to_o grow_v christian_n that_o the_o unconverted_a man_n be_v uncapable_a of_o and_o how_o repugnant_a this_o be_v to_o the_o whole_a discourse_n of_o the_o apostle_n i_o leave_v every_o one_o to_o judge_v thus_o he_o conclude_v his_o futilous_a cavil_n so_o that_o it_o suppose_v not_o any_o impossibility_n for_o the_o dark_a and_o worst_a of_o man_n to_o obtain_v without_o that_o principle_n of_o life_n from_o whence_o such_o act_n must_v flow_v unto_o this_o mr._n c._n reply_v p._n 29._o it_o be_v a_o great_a mistake_n to_o think_v and_o speak_v as_o if_o man_n be_v as_o dead_a and_o uncapable_a to_o believe_v and_o obey_v the_o gospel_n as_o a_o stock_n or_o a_o stone_n or_o as_o man_n that_o be_v natural_o dead_a this_o be_v a_o ridiculous_a and_o untrue_a imagination_n and_o so_o proceed_v with_o his_o unlearned_a eloquence_n to_o set_v forth_o the_o folly_n of_o give_v any_o thing_n in_o command_n to_o a_o stone_n etc._n etc._n but_o to_o these_o thing_n i_o say_v 1._o all_o man_n have_v indeed_o rational_a soul_n and_o none_o beside_o mr._n c._n will_v be_v so_o ridiculous_a as_o to_o to_o talk_v at_o such_o a_o rate_n as_o if_o man_n and_o stone_n be_v in_o the_o same_o capacity_n of_o be_v wrought_v upon_o by_o exhortation_n promise_n and_o threaten_n we_o acknowledge_v that_o these_o be_v proper_a moral_a instrument_n in_o their_o own_o nature_n suit_v to_o work_v upon_o the_o understanding_n will_n and_o affection_n of_o man_n and_o to_o produce_v the_o effect_n of_o faith_n and_o obedience_n in_o they_o and_o see_v these_o faculty_n be_v the_o principle_n and_o subject_n of_o all_o actual_a obedience_n it_o be_v also_o grant_v that_o there_o be_v in_o man_n a_o natural_a remote_a passive_a power_n of_o believe_v and_o obey_v the_o gospel_n which_o be_v not_o in_o stock_n and_o stone_n but_o this_o power_n be_v never_o actual_o put_v forth_o nor_o can_v be_v without_o the_o effectual_a grace_n of_o god_n work_v in_o they_o both_o to_o will_v and_o to_o do_v so_o that_o this_o notwithstanding_o as_o a_o stone_n or_o corpse_n can_v perform_v any_o operation_n of_o which_o natural_a life_n be_v the_o principle_n because_o they_o have_v it_o not_o neither_o can_v a_o man_n in_o his_o fall_a state_n put_v forth_o a_o act_n of_o spiritual_a life_n because_o he_o be_v without_o that_o life_n and_o grace_n that_o be_v the_o principle_n thereof_o for_o as_o the_o soul_n be_v to_o the_o body_n with_o respect_n to_o natural_a life_n so_o be_v the_o new_a nature_n to_o the_o soul_n with_o respect_n to_o a_o moral_a or_o spiritual_a life_n that_o which_o he_o offer_v that_o he_o may_v escape_v the_o force_n of_o this_o testimony_n be_v so_o remote_a from_o the_o evident_a scope_n of_o the_o text_n insist_v on_o that_o i_o shall_v not_o need_v to_o return_v any_o particular_a answer_n thereto_o but_o leave_v his_o error_n crush_v under_o the_o weight_n of_o these_o save_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n who_o have_v in_o they_o stain_v the_o pride_n of_o all_o flesh_n only_o i_o can_v wish_v that_o they_o into_o who_o hand_n these_o line_n may_v come_v will_v also_o consult_v dr._n owen_n in_o his_o discourse_n of_o the_o spirit_n where_o he_o do_v large_o plead_v and_o vindicate_v these_o text_n against_o the_o pelagian_o arminian_o etc._n etc._n from_o who_o mr._n c._n have_v drink_v in_o these_o notion_n for_o my_o own_o part_n i_o have_v not_o now_o produce_v they_o but_o only_o that_o i_o may_v take_v this_o opportunity_n to_o remove_v his_o objection_n against_o their_o true_a sense_n suppose_v this_o a_o convenient_a place_n for_o that_o work_n see_v my_o design_n be_v only_o to_o remove_v his_o cavil_n out_o of_o the_o way_n of_o weak_a christian_n and_o not_o to_o handle_v any_o point_n myself_o far_o than_o in_o the_o pursuit_n thereof_o i_o be_o lead_v to_o i_o pass_v therefore_o a_o multitude_n of_o other_o scripture_n that_o contradict_v his_o notion_n and_o shall_v attend_v he_o in_o his_o proof_n offer_v and_o discover_v the_o weakness_n and_o insufficiency_n thereof_o the_o first_o thing_n which_o he_o say_v prove_v his_o opinion_n be_v because_o it_o be_v the_o duty_n of_o all_o man_n suitable_a to_o the_o meaâ—s_n and_o ministry_n they_o have_v be_v under_o to_o believe_v and_o obey_v god_n and_o after_o he_o have_v by_o divers_a text_n prove_v this_o which_o none_o deny_v he_o add_v all_o which_o prove_v a_o capacity_n in_o man_n to_o answer_v his_o will_n or_o we_o must_v reflect_v on_o god_n etc._n etc._n be_v man_n to_o be_v before_o state_v and_o prove_v and_o every_o impartial_a reader_n may_v see_v how_o miserable_o he_o trifle_n in_o his_o endeavour_n to_o solve_v it_o he_o give_v you_o his_o word_n for_o it_o that_o god_n will_v excuse_v man_n from_o all_o that_o obedience_n that_o they_o have_v by_o their_o sin_n lose_v both_o power_n and_o will_v to_o perform_v but_o i_o hope_v none_o be_v so_o credulous_a as_o to_o take_v his_o book_n to_o be_v canonical_a not_o one_o text_n of_o scripture_n do_v he_o nor_o can_v he_o produce_v for_o the_o proof_n of_o his_o opinion_n but_o only_a attempt_n to_o back_v one_o falsehood_n with_o another_o say_v that_o since_o the_o fall_n god_n require_v not_o perfect_a obedience_n of_o man_n but_o only_a sincerity_n and_o that_o he_o know_v that_o man_n unallay_v and_o most_o rigorous_a sentence_n thersof_o the_o second_o thing_n mr._n c._n suppose_v be_v that_o every_o man_n have_v ability_n in_o his_o fall_a state_n to_o yield_v sincere_a the_o scripture_n teach_v other_o doctrine_n and_o the_o apostle_n paul_n be_v so_o far_o from_o this_o proud_a conceit_n of_o himself_o that_o he_o confess_v the_o quite_o contrary_a viz._n 2_o cor._n 3._o 5._o that_o we_o be_v not_o sufficient_a of_o ourselves_o to_o think_v any_o thing_n as_o of_o ourselves_o but_o our_o sufficiency_n be_v of_o god_n i._n e._n it_o be_v of_o god_n in_o a_o way_n of_o grace_n who_o work_v all_o our_o work_n in_o we_o but_o against_o the_o say_n of_o the_o apostle_n he_o except_v p._n 43._o it_o be_v true_a as_o of_o ourselves_o only_o we_o be_v not_o distinct_a from_o christ_n and_o gospel_n grace_n we_o be_v not_o but_o by_o the_o help_v afford_v there_o be_v power_n both_o to_o will_v and_o to_o do_v the_o will_n of_o god_n in_o the_o gospel_n mean_a while_n to_o suppose_v that_o any_o unconverted_a person_n have_v power_n of_o himself_o to_o be_v so_o good_a in_o thought_n will_n and_o deed_n as_o to_o get_v to_o heaven_n by_o the_o mere_a be_v but_o to_o render_v the_o work_n of_o conversion_n the_o more_o facile_a and_o easy_a for_o thus_o he_o write_v again_o p._n 33._o that_o after_o believe_v and_o obey_v the_o gospel_n god_n usual_o give_v a_o great_a measure_n of_o his_o spirit_n so_o that_o after_o believe_v christian_n be_v or_o may_v be_v in_o a_o better_a capacity_n to_o live_v to_o god_n then_o before_o they_o be_v therefore_o in_o a_o capacity_n to_o live_v to_o god_n before_o believe_v and_o again_o p._n 34._o as_o the_o apostle_n speak_v in_o the_o matter_n of_o prayer_n rom._n 8._o 26._o he_o help_v our_o infirmity_n so_o its_o true_a in_o all_o case_n the_o work_n of_o the_o spirit_n be_v to_o help_v our_o infirmity_n for_o it_o be_v we_o that_o dâ—_n believe_v and_o obey_v the_o gospel_n and_o not_o
