question_n in_o the_o understanding_n be_v whether_o it_o be_v to_o which_o that_o general_a proposition_n answer_v and_o in_o the_o next_o place_n what_o it_o be_v to_o which_o the_o second_o sort_n of_o complex_fw-la notion_n answer_n now_o of_o this_o second_o kind_n of_o complex_fw-la notion_n there_o be_v two_o kind_n viz._n either_o such_o as_o without_o the_o help_n of_o any_o discourse_n or_o ratiocination_n present_v themselves_o from_o the_o object_n to_o the_o understanding_n as_o this_o the_o man_n be_v red_a the_o man_n and_o the_o red_a be_v both_o object_n of_o sense_n and_o meet_v in_o the_o same_o subject_n or_o else_o such_o as_o either_o the_o thing_n affirm_v or_o the_o thing_n whereof_o the_o affirmation_n be_v or_o both_o be_v thing_n that_o do_v not_o immediate_o fall_v within_o our_o sense_n as_o the_o man_n be_v a_o substance_n or_o the_o spirit_n be_v a_o substance_n these_o though_o original_o derive_v from_o sense_n yet_o they_o be_v refine_v by_o the_o help_n of_o discourse_n 3._o conclusion_n draw_v either_o from_o these_o simple_a or_o complex_fw-la apprehension_n which_o flow_v into_o our_o understanding_n immediate_o by_o our_o sense_n and_o lapse_v condition_n beside_o other_o providential_a help_v a_o stock_n of_o visibles_n and_o a_o rational_a faculty_n to_o improve_v that_o stock_n to_o some_o measure_n of_o the_o knowledge_n of_o himself_o for_o the_o invisible_a thing_n of_o he_o from_o the_o creation_n of_o the_o world_n be_v clear_o see_v be_v understand_v by_o the_o thing_n that_o be_v make_v even_o his_o eternal_a power_n and_o godhead_n so_o that_o they_o be_v without_o excuse_n rome_n 1.20_o therefore_o as_o on_o the_o one_o side_n we_o be_v to_o avoid_v curiosity_n in_o measure_v the_o infinite_a mystery_n of_o light_n or_o reason_n in_o we_o to_o that_o end_n for_o which_o it_o be_v principal_o entrust_v with_o we_o even_o the_o knowledge_n of_o our_o creator_n yet_o still_o humble_o conclude_v with_o elihu_n job_n 34.32_o that_o which_o i_o see_v not_o teach_v thou_o i_o ii_o the_o first_o and_o most_o magisterial_a truth_n in_o the_o world_n upon_o which_o all_o other_o truth_n do_v depend_v be_v this_o that_o there_o be_v a_o first_o be_v and_o cause_n of_o all_o other_o being_n this_o be_v evident_a by_o clear_a reason_n 1._o either_o we_o must_v admit_v a_o first_o cause_n or_o else_o a_o actual_a infiniteness_n of_o succession_n of_o cause_n the_o latter_a be_v impossible_a in_o nature_n because_o it_o be_v impossible_a there_o can_v be_v that_o which_o be_v infinite_a and_o yet_o successive_a for_o than_o it_o will_v follow_v that_o that_o which_o be_v actual_o infinite_a in_o number_n shall_v be_v yet_o more_o infinite_a because_o there_o be_v new_a succession_n on_o cause_n and_o causation_n again_o it_o be_v impossible_a that_o there_o shall_v be_v a_o eternal_a dependence_n of_o cause_n one_o upon_o another_o without_o a_o first_o because_o then_o the_o whole_a collection_n of_o those_o cause_n take_v all_o together_o must_v needs_o likewise_o be_v actual_o depend_v and_o if_o so_o then_o upon_o themselves_o and_o that_o be_v impossible_a for_o the_o the_o rule_n or_o law_n that_o be_v give_v to_o man_n by_o the_o first_o cause_n of_o our_o be_v 9_o from_o the_o consideration_n of_o the_o first_o cause_n and_o of_o the_o premise_n it_o must_v needs_o follow_v that_o he_o be_v immutable_a for_o mutability_n be_v inconsistent_a 1._o with_o his_o perfection_n it_o be_v impossible_a that_o a_o pure_a act_n can_v have_v any_o change_n for_o all_o change_n do_v necessary_o infer_v passibility_n and_o receptibility_n of_o what_o it_o have_v not_o before_o and_o to_o suppose_v that_o be_v to_o conclude_v he_o be_v not_o actus_fw-la cause_n in_o point_n of_o his_o essence_n and_o nature_n so_o in_o some_o respect_n it_o be_v concern_v his_o acts._n these_o be_v of_o two_o kind_n viz._n the_o immanent_a act_n such_o be_v the_o act_n of_o his_o understanding_n and_o will_n and_o these_o be_v immutable_a as_o well_o as_o his_o essence_n for_o indeed_o they_o be_v but_o notional_o divide_v from_o it_o in_o we_o our_o will_n be_v one_o thing_n and_o our_o will_v another_o but_o that_o be_v inconsistent_a with_o the_o simplicity_n of_o the_o first_o cause_n hence_o it_o be_v that_o as_o his_o essence_n so_o his_o will_n be_v immutable_a he_o will_v nothing_o now_o but_o what_o he_o ever_o will_v and_o understand_v from_o eternity_n what_o he_o now_o know_v for_o eternity_n have_v neither_o now_o nor_o then_o in_o it_o 2._o the_o emanant_fw-la act_n those_o be_v nothing_o else_o but_o the_o execution_n of_o that_o immutable_a will_n these_o be_v subject_a to_o mutation_n but_o without_o the_o least_o mutation_n either_o in_o the_o essence_n or_o will_n of_o the_o first_o cause_n 1._o not_o in_o his_o essence_n it_o be_v true_a here_o be_v a_o new_a relation_n that_o be_v not_o before_o for_o when_o the_o first_o be_v produce_v a_o effect_n it_o be_v true_a the_o relation_n of_o a_o cause_n and_o a_o effect_n be_v now_o produce_v which_o be_v not_o before_o and_o so_o when_o more_o effect_n be_v produce_v the_o relation_n be_v multiply_v but_o relation_n breed_v no_o change_n at_o all_o in_o the_o subject_n concern_v who_o they_o be_v affirm_v the_o be_v be_v the_o same_o before_o it_o put_v forth_o itself_o in_o a_o causation_n as_o it_o be_v before_o it_o do_v of_o necessity_n import_v a_o change_n in_o the_o thing_n effect_v viz._n a_o motion_n à _fw-la non_fw-la esse_fw-la simpliciter_fw-la or_o à _fw-la non_fw-la esse_fw-la tale_n but_o not_o in_o the_o cause_n which_o have_v a_o absolute_a be_v before_o though_o not_o actual_o as_o a_o cause_n before_o 2._o not_o in_o his_o will._n it_o be_v true_a when_o any_o effect_n be_v produce_v that_o be_v not_o before_o here_o be_v a_o execution_n of_o what_o be_v not_o before_o but_o the_o will_n of_o that_o to_o be_v the_o term_n or_o execution_n of_o that_o will_n for_o by_o the_o same_o indivisible_a and_o eternal_a act_n of_o his_o will_n he_o will_v this_o or_o that_o to_o be_v make_v and_o after_o to_o be_v annihilate_v in_o time_n the_o change_n be_v in_o the_o terminus_fw-la or_o execution_n of_o his_o will_n not_o in_o the_o will_n or_o the_o immanent_a act_n of_o it_o but_o how_o can_v we_o then_o conceive_v that_o there_o shall_v be_v one_o immutable_a act_n of_o his_o will_n when_o a_o thing_n be_v past_a how_o can_v he_o be_v say_v to_o will_n that_o which_o be_v already_o execute_v and_o pass_v it_o for_o which_o we_o must_v return_v to_o what_o have_v be_v say_v viz._n that_o past_a and_o to_o come_v be_v but_o the_o measure_n of_o successive_a motion_n and_o therefore_o though_o they_o be_v applicable_a to_o they_o yet_o they_o be_v not_o applicable_a to_o a_o indivisible_a be_v or_o act_n the_o measure_n of_o successive_a motion_n do_v not_o fit_a eternity_n which_o though_o it_o be_v a_o duration_n that_o consist_v with_o the_o successive_a motion_n and_o duration_n of_o the_o creature_n yet_o it_o hold_v no_o proportion_n with_o it_o the_o motion_n of_o the_o heaven_n though_o 10000_o time_n swift_a than_o the_o motion_n of_o a_o tortoise_n have_v yet_o a_o proportion_n one_o to_o another_o because_o both_o successive_a and_o so_o time_n measure_v both_o but_o the_o duration_n of_o the_o first_o cause_n be_v the_o duration_n of_o a_o indivisible_a be_v and_o consequent_o hold_v not_o proportion_n with_o succession_n and_o hence_o it_o be_v that_o it_o be_v but_o our_o gross_a conception_n that_o do_v imagine_v any_o part_n of_o eternity_n past_a or_o any_o part_n to_o come_v or_o that_o time_n do_v divide_v the_o fore_a part_n of_o eternity_n from_o the_o future_a part_n of_o eternity_n it_o be_v a_o indivisible_a permanent_a duration_n nothing_o past_a nothing_o future_a but_o the_o same_o fix_a instant_n consequent_o the_o act_n of_o the_o needs_o be_v the_o first_o designer_n of_o his_o own_o end_n which_o be_v but_o the_o result_n of_o his_o work_n a_o second_o cause_n though_o he_o may_v have_v a_o end_n in_o his_o causation_n
