nature_n of_o man_n that_o it_o may_v be_v the_o rule_n and_o measure_n of_o all_o the_o good_a and_o evil_n which_o may_v happen_v to_o every_o one_o in_o particular_a for_o it_o be_v certain_a that_o the_o excess_n and_o defect_n can_v be_v know_v without_o a_o praevious_a knowledge_n of_o the_o perfection_n from_o which_o both_o decline_n and_o recede_v and_o to_o judge_v of_o the_o distance_n of_o the_o extremity_n a_o man_n ought_v to_o know_v the_o mean_a to_o which_o they_o relate_v have_v make_v a_o examination_n of_o all_o these_o thing_n we_o be_v further_a to_o be_v show_v what_o mean_v it_o use_v to_o perform_v what_o it_o promise_v what_o sign_n it_o ought_v to_o employ_v therein_o and_o what_o be_v their_o nature_n strength_n and_o weakness_n it_o be_v also_o to_o tell_v we_o what_o use_v it_o make_v of_o the_o rule_n of_o physiognomy_n and_o whether_o chiromancy_n and_o metoposcopy_n be_v serviceable_a to_o its_o design_n whereof_o we_o ought_v to_o have_v a_o general_a draught_n or_o platform_n these_o be_v the_o praeliminary_n which_o serve_v for_o a_o introduction_n to_o the_o whole_a science_n and_o be_v contain_v in_o this_o part_n which_o shall_v be_v divide_v into_o two_o book_n the_o former_a whereof_o shall_v treat_v of_o the_o matter_n which_o be_v the_o object_n of_o the_o art_n how_o to_o know_v men_n to_o wit_n the_o inclination_n motion_n of_o the_o soul_n virtue_n and_o vice_n the_o second_o shall_v examine_v the_o mean_n whereby_o it_o ought_v to_o discover_v all_o these_o thing_n the_o art_n how_o to_o know_v men._n the_o first_o book_n chap._n i._n a_o idea_n of_o the_o natural_a perfection_n of_o man._n every_o thing_n be_v perfect_a to_o which_o there_o be_v nothing_o want_v and_o which_o have_v whatsoever_o be_v necessary_a for_o the_o accomplishment_n of_o its_o nature_n it_o be_v therefore_o requisite_a that_o man_n who_o consist_v of_o body_n and_o soul_n shall_v to_o be_v absolute_o perfect_a have_v whatever_o be_v necessary_a for_o the_o accomplishment_n and_o perfection_n of_o these_o two_o part_n now_o the_o natural_a perfection_n of_o the_o soul_n consist_v in_o its_o have_v all_o the_o faculty_n and_o power_n which_o be_v necessary_a in_o order_n to_o the_o perform_n of_o those_o function_n whereto_o she_o be_v design_v the_o perfection_n of_o the_o body_n consist_v in_o the_o disposition_n which_o those_o faculty_n require_v therein_o to_o serve_v for_o organ_n to_o their_o function_n but_o since_o some_o of_o the_o faculty_n be_v noble_a than_o other_o and_o that_o in_o the_o order_n of_o thing_n unequal_a the_o more_o excellent_a be_v the_o rule_n of_o the_o other_o it_o follow_v that_o the_o understanding_n which_o be_v the_o noble_a faculty_n in_o man_n shall_v be_v the_o rule_n and_o measure_n of_o all_o those_o that_o be_v inferior_a to_o it_o and_o that_o these_o last_o shall_v be_v so_o dispose_v as_o that_o as_o much_o as_o possible_o they_o may_v be_v conformable_a to_o that_o superior_a faculty_n to_o the_o end_n they_o shall_v not_o obstruct_v the_o action_n it_o ought_v to_o do_v so_o that_o the_o understanding_n be_v of_o its_o own_o nature_n indifferent_a and_o indeterminate_a in_o order_n to_o the_o judgement_n it_o be_v to_o make_v of_o all_o thing_n and_o consequent_o that_o it_o be_v all_o thing_n in_o potentia_fw-la that_o be_v potential_o as_o not_o be_v determine_v to_o any_o one_o in_o particular_a it_o be_v requisite_a that_o the_o faculty_n subordinate_a to_o it_o shall_v as_o much_o as_o may_v be_v comply_v with_o that_o indifference_n which_o indifference_n since_o they_o can_v have_v in_o the_o same_o degree_n of_o perfection_n as_o the_o understanding_n in_o regard_n they_o be_v material_a and_o consequent_o determinate_a they_o ought_v nevertheless_o to_o have_v it_o so_o far_o as_o they_o be_v capable_a thereof_o now_o all_o the_o indifference_n they_o be_v capable_a of_o be_v reduce_v to_o that_o which_o consist_v in_o a_o mediocrity_n for_o the_o mean_a be_v less_o determinate_a than_o the_o extremity_n as_o be_v indifferent_a in_o respect_n to_o both_o those_o faculty_n therefore_o which_o consist_v of_o the_o mean_a or_o mediocrity_n be_v more_o conformable_a to_o the_o understanding_n than_o those_o in_o the_o excess_n or_o defect_n but_o forasmuch_o as_o the_o instrument_n ought_v to_o be_v proportion_v to_o the_o power_n by_o which_o they_o be_v employ_v it_o follow_v that_o the_o conformation_n of_o the_o part_n and_o the_o temperament_n which_o be_v the_o instrument_n of_o the_o soul_n faculty_n shall_v have_v the_o same_o mediocrity_n as_o they_o have_v so_o that_o the_o part_n ought_v to_o be_v neither_o too_o big_a nor_o too_o little_a nor_o the_o quality_n whereof_o the_o temperament_n consist_v be_v predominant_a one_o over_o another_o but_o all_o aught_o to_o be_v in_o a_o just_a aequilibrium_fw-la and_o mediocrity_n article_n 1._o that_o only_a man_n have_v the_o sense_n of_o touch_v in_o perfection_n and_o that_o this_o be_v according_a to_o the_o design_n of_o nature_n may_v be_v deduce_v hence_o that_o she_o have_v bestow_v this_o perfect_a temperament_n only_o on_o man_n for_o there_o be_v always_o some_o excess_n in_o that_o of_o other_o creature_n one_o be_v too_o hot_a or_o too_o cold_a another_o too_o dry_a or_o too_o moist_a but_o in_o man_n all_o these_o quality_n be_v unite_v in_o a_o just_a moderation_n and_o therefore_o the_o sense_n which_o follow_v this_o temperament_n as_o the_o touch_v and_o taste_v which_o be_v a_o kind_n of_o touch_v as_o aristotle_n affirm_v be_v more_o perfect_a in_o he_o then_o in_o any_o other_o animal_n for_o these_o sense_n and_o especial_o the_o touch_v require_v a_o exact_a temperature_n in_o their_o organ_n it_o be_v requisite_a that_o what_o ought_v to_o judge_n shall_v be_v in_o the_o mean_a that_o it_o may_v judge_v without_o any_o pre-occupation_n now_o as_o there_o be_v two_o sort_n of_o mean_n one_o consist_v in_o the_o absolute_a privation_n of_o the_o object_n and_o the_o other_o in_o their_o equal_a participation_n only_o the_o touch_n judge_n by_o this_o latter_a for_o all_o the_o other_o be_v destitute_a or_o deprive_v of_o the_o quality_n whereof_o they_o judge_v as_o the_o ey_fw-mi which_o judge_n of_o colour_n aught_o to_o be_v without_o any_o colour_n but_o in_o regard_n the_o touch_v judge_n of_o the_o first_o quality_n whereof_o its_o organ_n can_v be_v deprive_v it_o be_v requisite_a for_o its_o more_o perfect_a knowledge_n thereof_o that_o it_o shall_v have_v they_o unite_v in_o a_o just_a mediocrity_n that_o it_o may_v judge_v of_o their_o extremity_n which_o it_o have_v not_o and_o of_o their_o moderation_n by_o not_o assign_v any_o excess_n therein_o but_o however_o it_o be_v nature_n have_v no_o other_o motive_n in_o indue_a man_n with_o this_o perfect_a temperature_n then_o to_o make_v conformable_a to_o the_o noble_a faculty_n of_o the_o soul_n the_o general_a instrument_n of_o its_o function_n and_o to_o place_v it_o in_o the_o mean_a that_o it_o may_v be_v less_o determinate_a and_o that_o it_o as_o well_o as_o the_o faculty_n shall_v have_v all_o the_o indifference_n whereof_o it_o be_v capable_a which_o be_v not_o necessary_a for_o other_o animal_n all_o who_o faculty_n be_v determinate_v art_n 2._o all_o in_o man_n shall_v be_v in_o a_o mediocrity_n from_o this_o truth_n thus_o establish_v there_o may_v be_v draw_v a_o consequence_n which_o confirm_v what_o we_o have_v say_v concern_v the_o mediocrity_n which_o ought_v to_o be_v in_o the_o power_n of_o the_o soul_n not_o only_o in_o those_o which_o be_v subalternate_a but_o also_o in_o the_o superior_a such_o as_o be_v the_o understanding_n and_o the_o will._n for_o since_o the_o temperament_n moderate_v all_o the_o faculty_n render_v they_o more_o or_o less_o strong_a according_a to_o the_o degree_n it_o have_v and_o that_o if_o it_o be_v hot_a for_o instance_n it_o strengthen_v the_o imagination_n and_o weaken_v the_o judgement_n and_o that_o on_o the_o contrary_a if_o it_o be_v cold_a it_o assist_v the_o judgement_n and_o injure_v the_o imagination_n and_o so_o of_o the_o rest_n it_o follow_v that_o if_o there_o be_v a_o equality_n require_v to_o render_v the_o man_n perfect_a it_o be_v also_o requisite_a that_o all_o the_o faculty_n of_o the_o soul_n shall_v participate_v of_o that_o equality_n and_o that_o they_o shall_v observe_v the_o same_o moderation_n which_o be_v in_o the_o temperament_n so_o that_o the_o natural_a perfection_n of_o
man_n require_v not_o a_o excessive_a vivacity_n of_o imagination_n nor_o a_o over-circumspect_a judgement_n nor_o a_o too_o happy_a memory_n nay_o it_o can_v bear_v with_o these_o sublime_a spirit_n which_o be_v always_o fix_v on_o the_o contemplation_n of_o thing_n high_a and_o difficult_a not_o only_o upon_o this_o account_n that_o have_v design_v man_n for_o society_n it_o expect_v he_o shall_v equal_o apply_v himself_o to_o contemplation_n and_o action_n but_o principal_o in_o regard_n that_o it_o be_v impossible_a the_o body_n shall_v have_v its_o natural_a perfection_n when_o it_o have_v the_o disposition_n requisite_a to_o sublimity_n of_o spirit_n for_o the_o body_n must_v needs_o be_v weak_a when_o the_o spirit_n be_v too_o strong_a as_o the_o overgreat_a strength_n of_o body_n lessen_v and_o weaken_v the_o spirit_n as_o we_o shall_v show_v more_o at_o large_a hereafter_o the_o case_n be_v the_o same_o with_o all_o the_o other_o faculty_n for_o if_o the_o appetite_n be_v too_o apt_a to_o move_v if_o the_o sense_n too_o subtle_a if_o the_o concoctive_a virtue_n the_o evacuative_a or_o retentive_a be_v too_o strong_a they_o be_v so_o many_o defect_n and_o irregularity_n they_o shall_v all_o be_v proportionate_a to_o the_o equality_n of_o the_o temperament_n which_o do_v not_o admit_v of_o these_o vicious_a perfection_n art_n 3._o that_o all_o the_o faculty_n ought_v to_o be_v in_o a_o mean_n and_o that_o this_o be_v true_a even_o in_o those_o faculty_n which_o be_v spiritual_a may_v be_v deduce_v hence_o that_o the_o action_n and_o the_o power_n ought_v to_o be_v conformable_a one_o to_o the_o other_o in_o as_o much_o as_o the_o action_n be_v only_o a_o progress_n and_o effusion_n of_o the_o active_a power_n if_o therefore_o action_n can_v be_v perfect_a but_o so_o far_o as_o they_o be_v moderate_a it_o be_v necessary_a that_o the_o faculty_n shall_v derive_v their_o perfection_n from_o their_o moderation_n but_o it_o be_v a_o receive_a maxim_n in_o morality_n that_o action_n to_o be_v virtuous_a aught_o to_o be_v in_o a_o mediocrity_n and_o consequent_o the_o faculty_n from_o which_o they_o proceed_v shall_v also_o be_v in_o the_o same_o mediocrity_n now_o the_o first_o spring_n of_o this_o mediocrity_n be_v the_o indifference_n which_o be_v natural_a to_o the_o rational_a soul_n for_o since_o the_o action_n be_v conformable_a to_o the_o power_n the_o action_n shall_v be_v as_o indifferent_a as_o the_o other_o be_v and_o though_o it_o be_v determine_v by_o the_o action_n it_o do_v yet_o do_v it_o nevertheless_o preserve_v its_o indifference_n by_o the_o mediocrity_n which_o the_o action_n receive_v from_o it_o the_o reason_n be_v that_o what_o be_v in_o the_o mean_a be_v indifferent_a in_o respect_n of_o the_o extremity_n and_o that_o what_o be_v in_o the_o extremity_n be_v less_o indifferent_a and_o more_o determinate_v than_o what_o be_v in_o the_o mean_a as_o we_o have_v show_v already_o and_o thence_o proceed_v the_o necessity_n there_o be_v of_o moderate_v the_o passion_n for_o though_o in_o other_o animal_n they_o be_v the_o more_o perfect_a the_o great_a and_o strong_a they_o be_v and_o that_o the_o more_o fearful_a a_o hare_n be_v and_o the_o more_o cruel_a a_o tiger_n the_o more_o perfect_a be_v each_o of_o they_o in_o its_o kind_n yet_o be_v not_o so_o in_o those_o of_o man_n in_o as_o much_o as_o they_o ought_v to_o be_v in_o a_o mean_a between_o excess_n and_o defect_n that_o they_o may_v be_v the_o more_o conformable_a to_o the_o indifference_n of_o the_o superior_a part_n art_n 4._o that_o all_o natural_a inclination_n be_v defect_n i_o conceive_v it_o will_v be_v no_o hard_a matter_n to_o apprehend_v and_o subscribe_v unto_o all_o these_o truth_n because_o they_o be_v maintain_v by_o reason_n and_o experience_n but_o there_o be_v yet_o another_o may_v be_v deduce_v from_o the_o same_o principle_n which_o i_o question_v not_o will_v be_v think_v very_o strange_a though_o it_o be_v no_o less_o certain_a it_o be_v this_o that_o though_o there_o be_v some_o inclination_n which_o be_v good_a in_o themselves_o and_o deserve_v commendation_n such_o as_o those_o man_n have_v for_o the_o virtue_n yet_o be_v they_o defect_n and_o alter_v the_o natural_a perfection_n which_o be_v conformable_a to_o humane_a nature_n and_o certain_o this_o will_v occur_v upon_o common_a observation_n and_o experience_n that_o those_o who_o have_v from_o their_o birth_n some_o excellent_a virtue_n have_v have_v they_o attend_v by_o great_a vice_n for_o a_o man_n must_v needs_o fall_v into_o defect_n and_o imperfection_n so_o far_o as_o he_o be_v at_o a_o distance_n from_o perfection_n now_o the_o perfection_n of_o man_n be_v to_o be_v indifferent_a and_o not_o determinate_v to_o any_o particular_a virtue_n he_o shall_v be_v capable_a of_o all_o for_o the_o virtue_n that_o come_v along_o with_o the_o birth_n be_v not_o real_a virtue_n they_o be_v only_o the_o initiatio_n of_o they_o or_o rather_o they_o be_v but_o inclination_n which_o a_o man_n have_v for_o they_o in_o a_o word_n they_o be_v bound_n and_o limit_n confine_v the_o capacity_n of_o the_o soul_n which_o be_v universal_a to_o a_o particular_a habit_n the_o soul_n of_o its_o own_o nature_n be_v not_o determinate_v and_o aught_o to_o be_v capable_a of_o all_o humane_a action_n and_o as_o it_o may_v know_v all_o thing_n so_o be_v it_o requisite_a that_o the_o appetite_n which_o follow_v her_o knowledge_n shall_v have_v also_o the_o freedom_n to_o incline_v itself_o to_o all_o thing_n and_o this_o universal_a capacity_n be_v at_o the_o same_o time_n a_o effect_n of_o the_o spirituality_n of_o her_o nature_n and_o the_o cause_n of_o the_o liberty_n she_o have_v for_o if_o she_o be_v material_a she_o will_v be_v determinate_v and_o if_o she_o be_v not_o indifferent_a she_o shall_v not_o be_v free_a the_o inclination_n therefore_o which_o man_n may_v have_v though_o they_o may_v be_v for_o the_o most_o excellent_a virtue_n be_v imperfection_n he_o ought_v not_o to_o have_v any_o for_o any_o one_o in_o particular_a but_o for_o all_o together_o and_o this_o be_v that_o which_o the_o angel_n of_o the_o school_n have_v so_o judicious_o deliver_v when_o he_o affirm_v that_o there_o be_v no_o animal_n but_o have_v some_o inclination_n to_o a_o passion_n moist_a climate_n may_v cause_v and_o afterward_o of_o those_o which_o may_v proceed_v from_o a_o moist_a or_o dry_a fruitful_a or_o barren_a soil_n in_o the_o three_o place_n of_o that_o which_o be_v consequent_a to_o the_o situation_n as_o it_o be_v oriental_a or_o occidental_a high_a or_o low_a maritime_a or_o mediterranean_a in_o fine_a what_o contribution_n may_v be_v make_v thereto_o by_o the_o several_a wind_n east_n west_n north_n and_o south_n thence_o it_o must_v descend_v to_o the_o figure_n and_o manner_n of_o those_o nation_n which_o depend_v partly_o on_o these_o cause_n partly_o on_o the_o original_n of_o the_o people_n themselves_o whereof_o they_o still_o retain_v some_o tincture_n as_o also_o on_o the_o good_a or_o ill_a fortune_n which_o have_v attend_v they_o and_o cause_v they_o to_o change_v their_o former_a discipline_n and_o their_o ancient_a course_n of_o life_n this_o treatise_n must_v needs_o be_v long_o and_o will_v require_v great_a pain_n to_o bring_v it_o to_o a_o period_n for_o beside_o that_o there_o must_v be_v some_o reason_n give_v of_o the_o particular_a figure_n of_o every_o people_n and_o its_o inclination_n which_o be_v a_o
