unalterable_a suitableness_n or_o harmony_n betwixt_o a_o indigent_a creature_n and_o pity_n if_o goodness_n and_o bounty_n than_o there_o be_v a_o everlasting_a proportion_n between_o fullness_n and_o its_o spread_a itself_o abroad_o for_o the_o benefit_n of_o the_o creation_n if_o these_o thing_n be_v not_o eternal_a and_o indispensible_a perfection_n then_o their_o contrary_n injustice_n unfaithfulness_n cruelty_n malice_n and_o whatever_o go_v to_o the_o constitution_n of_o hell_n itself_o may_v have_v be_v make_v the_o high_a perfection_n of_o the_o divine_a nature_n which_o be_v such_o a_o blasphemy_n as_o can_v be_v name_v without_o tremble_v to_o conclude_v shall_v we_o endeavour_v to_o deliver_v what_o aristotle_n have_v leave_v we_o concern_v this_o virtue_n have_v spend_v about_o justice_n alone_o the_o whole_a five_o book_n of_o his_o ethic_n we_o may_v prove_v tedious_a if_o not_o infinite_a much_o more_o shall_v we_o follow_v those_o endless_a discourse_n which_o man_n have_v put_v together_o by_o way_n of_o comment_n upon_o the_o text_n of_o their_o civil_a law_n condemn_v the_o infinite_a comment_n upon_o justice_n condemn_v the_o wise_a emperor_n who_o be_v the_o founder_n of_o their_o law_n as_o foresee_v the_o mischief_n that_o will_v thence_o arise_v strict_o command_v that_o nothing_o shall_v be_v write_v by_o way_n of_o exposition_n but_o only_o as_o he_o call_v they_o paratitla_n long_a time_n be_v this_o charge_n observe_v ere_o there_o be_v any_o line_n write_v upon_o this_o subject_a but_o as_o soon_o as_o some_o forward_a man_n have_v break_v up_o the_o bank_n that_o be_v set_v they_o there_o issue_v forth_o such_o a_o torrent_n of_o writer_n as_o divinity_n only_o except_v have_v be_v hardly_o find_v in_o any_o other_o science_n it_o be_v not_o much_o more_o than_o 400_o year_n since_o that_o irnerius_n and_o accursius_fw-la begin_v to_o write_v but_o there_o follow_v upon_o they_o such_o a_o rabble_n of_o scribbler_n that_o our_o whole_a library_n have_v be_v too_o little_a to_o hold_v they_o so_o fertile_a have_v their_o wit_n be_v either_o in_o open_v the_o path_n of_o justice_n or_o in_o contrive_v byway_n to_o injustice_n if_o therefore_o you_o will_v hear_v more_o concern_v justice_n i_o must_v recommend_v you_o to_o aristotle_n or_o to_o the_o interpreter_n of_o the_o law_n if_o at_o least_o their_o multitude_n do_v not_o confound_v you_o but_o this_o observation_n we_o may_v make_v in_o the_o course_n of_o common_a justice_n that_o the_o write_a law_n be_v like_a to_o a_o stiff_a rule_n of_o steel_n or_o iron_n which_o will_v not_o be_v apply_v to_o the_o fashion_n of_o the_o stone_n or_o timber_n whereunto_o it_o be_v lay_v and_o equity_n as_o aristotle_n say_v well_o be_v like_a to_o the_o leaden_a rule_n of_o the_o lesbian_a artificer_n which_o they_o may_v at_o pleasure_n bend_v to_o every_o stone_n of_o whatsoever_o figure_n and_o that_o we_o may_v conclude_v this_o head_n in_o the_o language_n of_o aristotle_n out_o of_o a_o arithmetical_a government_n as_o we_o may_v call_v it_o by_o rigour_n of_o law_n and_o that_o geometrical_a judgement_n at_o the_o pleasure_n of_o a_o chancellor_n well_o temper_v together_o the_o sweet_a harmony_n of_o justice_n must_v needs_o arise_v of_o intellectual_a virtue_n from_z virtue_n of_o a_o more_o troublesome_a and_o tumultuous_a nature_n for_o such_o all_o moral_a virtue_n be_v which_o consist_v in_o the_o moderation_n of_o our_o passion_n that_o be_v nothing_o else_o but_o wind_n and_o flood_n trouble_v our_o quiet_n we_o come_v now_o to_o a_o more_o serene_a and_o peaceable_a order_n of_o virtue_n which_o we_o call_v intellectual_a and_o consist_v in_o that_o part_n of_o the_o soul_n which_o have_v reason_n and_o understanding_n these_o be_v in_o number_n five_o ars_fw-la prudentia_fw-la scientia_fw-la intellectus_fw-la sapientia_fw-la for_o all_o thing_n about_o which_o we_o busy_v ourselves_o be_v range_v under_o these_o three_o head_n profit_n peace_n and_o truth_n profit_n art_n profit_n the_o subject_a of_o art_n which_o be_v the_o god_n of_o the_o world_n be_v the_o proper_a subject_n of_o that_o virtue_n we_o call_v art_n and_o be_v nothing_o else_o but_o diligence_n in_o get_v a_o livelihood_n and_o mean_n to_o subsist_v the_o virtue_n which_o be_v employ_v in_o manage_v our_o peace_n we_o call_v prudence_n prudence_n peace_n the_o subject_a of_o prudence_n for_o all_o endeavour_n for_o quiet_a and_o good_a order_n and_o decent_a procure_n and_o bring_v about_o our_o industry_n for_o liveliehood_n for_o mutual_a association_n and_o all_o other_o help_v of_o good_a order_n and_o fair_a demeanour_n among_o ourselves_o either_o in_o single_a life_n or_o in_o family_n or_o in_o commonwealth_n which_o be_v nothing_o else_o but_o collection_n of_o family_n yea_o of_o manage_v war_n itself_o since_o war_n be_v never_o undertake_v but_o for_o peace_n all_o these_o be_v the_o offspring_n and_o issue_n of_o prudence_n the_o last_o thing_n etc._n truth_n the_o subject_a of_o science_n etc._n etc._n which_o we_o labour_v about_o and_o indeed_o be_v most_o proper_a and_o agreeable_a to_o the_o rational_a soul_n be_v truth_n the_o most_o excellent_a of_o all_o other_o thing_n if_o we_o know_v how_o true_o to_o value_v it_o to_o this_o belong_v the_o other_o three_o virtue_n science_n understanding_n and_o wisdom_n all_o which_o spend_v themselves_o in_o the_o investigation_n of_o truth_n by_o the_o way_n i_o have_v often_o wonder_v how_o justice_n escape_v out_o of_o the_o number_n of_o intellectual_a virtue_n for_o it_o have_v very_o little_a in_o it_o why_o we_o shall_v account_v it_o among_o the_o moral_n since_o it_o be_v not_o conversant_a in_o the_o moderation_n of_o any_o passion_n or_o in_o hold_v a_o mediocrity_n betwixt_o two_o extreme_n which_o two_o thing_n formal_o constitute_v every_o moral_a virtue_n but_o every_o act_n of_o it_o be_v pure_o rational_a and_o partake_v little_a with_o the_o sensitive_a part_n but_o thus_o it_o have_v please_v our_o great_a master_n in_o this_o faculty_n we_o now_o speak_v of_o to_o range_v the_o virtue_n and_o have_v discourse_v of_o justice_n among_o the_o moral_n we_o will_v take_v no_o far_o notice_n of_o it_o but_o descend_v forthwith_o to_o the_o explication_n of_o the_o intellectual_n and_o first_o of_o art_n now_o we_o enter_v the_o workhouse_n of_o virtue_n where_o art_n manage_n all_o the_o tool_n and_o material_n and_o in_o humane_a life_n we_o be_v much_o more_o beholden_a to_o those_o who_o invent_v plough_v and_o sow_v than_o we_o be_v to_o the_o fine_a wit_n virtue_n the_o workhouse_n of_o virtue_n who_o have_v convey_v to_o we_o nothing_o but_o the_o abstract_a idea_n of_o science_n and_o the_o airy_a notion_n of_o metaphysic_n which_o be_v like_o the_o curious_a argumentation_n concern_v quantity_n and_o motion_n in_o natural_a philosophy_n if_o they_o only_o hover_v aloof_o and_o be_v not_o square_v to_o particular_a matter_n they_o may_v give_v a_o empty_a satisfaction_n but_o no_o benefit_n and_o rather_o serve_v to_o swell_v than_o fill_v the_o mind_n but_o whatever_o we_o see_v in_o city_n or_o house_n above_o the_o first_o wildness_n of_o field_n the_o meanness_n of_o cottage_n and_o the_o nakedness_n of_o man_n must_v be_v ascribe_v to_o the_o work_n of_o art_n therefore_o we_o be_v now_o to_o show_v how_o excellent_a and_o useful_a virtue_n be_v in_o the_o establish_v way_n of_o life_n for_o although_o the_o study_n of_o man_n be_v various_a according_a to_o the_o difference_n of_o those_o calling_n to_o which_o they_o apply_v themselves_o or_o the_o temper_n of_o the_o place_n wherein_o they_o live_v yet_o the_o whole_a trade_n and_o business_n among_o they_o honesty_n the_o business_n of_o life_n depend_v upon_o common_a honesty_n do_v depend_v as_o much_o upon_o common-honesty_n as_o war_n do_v upon_o discipline_n and_o without_o which_o all_o will_v break_v up_o merchant_n will_v turn_v pedlar_n and_o soldier_n thief_n but_o upon_o the_o principle_n of_o honesty_n we_o work_v cheerful_o our_o life_n be_v pleasant_a and_o we_o be_v constant_a to_o our_o purpose_n when_o the_o follow_v of_o profit_n without_o regard_n to_o these_o principle_n will_v bring_v continual_a vexation_n upon_o we_o wherefore_o tully_n in_o his_o office_n blame_v the_o corruption_n of_o time_n and_o custom_n that_o the_o word_n profitable_a shall_v be_v pervert_v insensible_o to_o the_o signification_n of_o somewhat_o that_o may_v be_v separate_v from_o honesty_n as_o if_o any_o thing_n can_v be_v profitable_a that_o be_v not_o honest_a or_o any_o thing_n honest_a without_o be_v profitable_a a_o error_n of_o the_o most_o pernicious_a consequence_n imaginable_a to_o the_o life_n of_o man_n from_o the_o not_o understand_v this_o matter_n aright_o it_o often_o come_v to_o pass_v that_o we_o have_v a_o cunning_a artificial_a sort_n of_o people_n in_o great_a admiration_n mistake_v craft_n for_o wisdom_n this_o opinion_n
best_a and_o most_o desirable_a doctrine_n in_o the_o world_n with_o the_o vain_a enthusiasm_n now_o by_o the_o principle_n of_o reason_n we_o be_v not_o to_o understand_v the_o ground_n of_o any_o man_n philosophy_n nor_o the_o critical_a rule_n of_o syllogism_n but_o those_o fundamental_a notice_n that_o god_n have_v plant_v in_o our_o soul_n whereby_o we_o know_v that_o every_o thing_n be_v make_v for_o a_o end_n and_o every_o thing_n be_v direct_v to_o its_o end_n by_o certain_a rule_n these_o rule_n in_o creature_n of_o understanding_n and_o choice_n be_v law_n and_o in_o transgress_v these_o be_v vice_n and_o sin_n as_o for_o argument_n from_o scripture_n against_o the_o use_n of_o reason_n it_o be_v allege_v that_o god_n will_v destroy_v the_o wisdom_n of_o the_o wise_a and_o that_o the_o world_n by_o wisdom_n know_v not_o god_n but_o by_o this_o wisdom_n be_v not_o mean_v the_o reason_n of_o mankind_n but_o the_o tradition_n of_o the_o jew_n the_o philosophy_n of_o the_o dispute_a greek_n and_o the_o policy_n of_o the_o roman_n all_o which_o the_o apostle_n set_v at_o naught_o because_o they_o be_v very_o contrary_a to_o the_o simplicity_n and_o holiness_n to_o the_o self-denial_n and_o meekness_n of_o the_o gospel_n second_o it_o be_v say_v that_o the_o natural_a man_n receive_v not_o the_o thing_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n for_o they_o be_v foolishness_n to_o he_o neither_o can_v he_o know_v they_o because_o they_o be_v spiritual_o discern_v by_o which_o word_n nothing_o more_o be_v intend_v than_o that_o a_o man_n who_o be_v guide_v pure_o by_o natural_a reason_n and_o be_v not_o enlighten_v by_o divine_a revelation_n can_v understand_v matter_n of_o pure_a revelation_n but_o he_o think_v they_o absurd_a and_o foolish_a till_o they_o be_v make_v know_v to_o he_o by_o the_o revelation_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n and_o when_o they_o be_v so_o nothing_o appear_v in_o the_o mystery_n of_o religion_n but_o what_o be_v agreeable_a to_o the_o sound_a reason_n and_o wisdom_n three_o it_o be_v urge_v that_o our_o reason_n be_v very_o liable_a to_o be_v mislead_v by_o our_o sense_n and_o affection_n by_o our_o interest_n and_o imagination_n so_o that_o many_o time_n we_o mingle_v error_n and_o false_a conceit_n with_o the_o genuine_a dictate_v of_o our_o mind_n and_o appeal_v to_o they_o as_o the_o principle_n of_o truth_n when_o they_o be_v the_o false_a conclusion_n of_o ignorance_n and_o mistake_n all_o that_o can_v be_v infer_v from_o hence_o be_v that_o we_o ought_v not_o to_o be_v too_o bold_a in_o define_v speculative_a and_o difficult_a matter_n nor_o set_v our_o reason_n against_o the_o doctrine_n of_o faith_n but_o this_o do_v not_o tend_v to_o the_o disreputation_n of_o reason_n in_o the_o object_n that_o be_v those_o principle_n of_o truth_n which_o be_v write_v upon_o our_o soul_n for_o if_o we_o may_v not_o use_v our_o understanding_n scripture_n itself_o will_v signify_v either_o nothing_o at_o all_o or_o very_o little_a to_o we_o therefore_o to_o decry_v the_o use_n of_o reason_n be_v to_o introduce_v atheism_n reason_n the_o mischief_n of_o decry_v the_o use_n of_o reason_n for_o what_o great_a advantage_n can_v the_o atheist_n have_v against_o virtue_n than_o that_o reason_n be_v against_o the_o precept_n of_o it_o this_o will_v make_v our_o religion_n depend_v upon_o a_o warm_a fancy_n and_o a_o ungrounded_a belief_n so_o that_o it_o can_v stand_v only_o till_o a_o new_a conceit_n alter_v the_o scene_n of_o imagination_n second_o to_o decry_v the_o use_n of_o reason_n be_v to_o lay_v ourselves_o open_a to_o infinite_a folly_n and_o imposture_n when_o every_o thing_n that_o be_v reasonable_a be_v call_v vain_a philosophy_n and_o every_o thing_n that_o be_v sober_a carnal_a reason_v this_o be_v the_o way_n to_o make_v up_o a_o religion_n without_o sense_n and_o without_o moral_a virtue_n this_o be_v to_o put_v out_o our_o eye_n that_o we_o may_v see_v and_o to_o hoodwink_v ourselves_o that_o we_o may_v avoid_v the_o precipice_n of_o vice_n thus_o have_v all_o extravagancy_n be_v bring_v into_o religion_n beyond_o the_o imagination_n of_o a_o fever_n and_o the_o conceit_n of_o midnight_n the_o last_o and_o great_a obstacle_n to_o the_o progress_n of_o moral_a virtue_n be_v some_o man_n make_a morality_n and_o grace_n opposite_a to_o one_o another_o opposite_n grace_n and_o morality_n be_v not_o opposite_n to_o divorce_v grace_n from_o virtue_n and_o to_o distinguish_v the_o spiritual_a christian_a from_o the_o moral_a man_n be_v a_o modern_a invention_n for_o not_o one_o ancient_a author_n that_o have_v treat_v of_o our_o religion_n do_v ever_o make_v any_o difference_n between_o the_o nature_n of_o moral_a virtue_n and_o evangelical_n grace_n evangelical_n grace_n be_v nothing_o else_o in_o their_o account_n but_o moral_a virtue_n heighten_v by_o the_o motive_n of_o the_o gospel_n and_o the_o assistance_n of_o the_o spirit_n both_o which_o be_v external_a consideration_n to_o the_o essence_n of_o the_o thing_n itself_o so_o that_o the_o christian_a institution_n do_v not_o introduce_v any_o new_a duty_n distinct_a from_o the_o eternal_a rule_n of_o morality_n but_o strengthen_v they_o by_o new_a obligation_n and_o improve_v they_o by_o new_a principle_n for_o the_o power_n to_o perform_v these_o duty_n come_v from_o the_o internal_a operation_n of_o the_o holy_a spirit_n which_o apply_v the_o motive_n of_o religion_n to_o our_o mind_n and_o by_o they_o persuade_v we_o to_o every_o good_a action_n that_o we_o be_v enlighten_v with_o the_o knowledge_n of_o christ_n come_v of_o his_o gift_n who_o dispose_v we_o to_o learn_v the_o truth_n that_o we_o attend_v to_o the_o word_n of_o god_n and_o be_v wrought_v into_o a_o serious_a temper_n that_o we_o be_v excite_v to_o good_a resolution_n and_o confirm_v in_o they_o come_v of_o his_o grace_n who_o put_v good_a thought_n into_o our_o mind_n thereby_o move_v our_o will_n and_o affection_n most_o powerful_o to_o every_o good_a work_n or_o to_o every_o moral_a virtue_n which_o consist_v not_o only_o in_o the_o decency_n of_o outward_a behaviour_n but_o be_v a_o prevail_a inclination_n of_o the_o mind_n to_o those_o manner_n or_o that_o way_n of_o life_n which_o be_v best_a for_o a_o reasonable_a creature_n or_o it_o be_v a_o universal_a goodness_n of_o manner_n in_o mind_n and_o in_o practice_n now_o it_o be_v name_v virtue_n because_o the_o strength_n and_o vigour_n of_o a_o reasonable_a creature_n consist_v in_o a_o temper_n of_o mind_n and_o course_n of_o life_n agreeable_a to_o right_a reason_n it_o be_v call_v moral_a because_o it_o be_v conversant_a about_o the_o customary_a disposition_n and_o action_n of_o reasonable_a creature_n so_o those_o law_n that_o be_v give_v with_o rational_a inducement_n to_o obedience_n be_v say_v to_o be_v moral_a law_n as_o be_v proper_a and_o suitable_a to_o the_o nature_n of_o rational_a being_n to_o who_o they_o be_v prescribe_v and_o this_o in_o opposition_n to_o the_o law_n of_o motion_n and_o matter_n by_o which_o god_n govern_v the_o rest_n of_o his_o work_n for_o that_o agent_n which_o have_v no_o power_n over_o itself_o but_o act_n because_o it_o must_v whatsoever_o laudable_a effect_n it_o may_v produce_v it_o be_v as_o uncapable_a of_o morality_n as_o those_o senseless_a machine_n be_v that_o move_v by_o the_o law_n of_o matter_n and_o motion_n now_o the_o duty_n require_v of_o we_o in_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n be_v moral_a in_o the_o strict_a sense_n so_o that_o holiness_n and_o moral_a virtue_n be_v in_o truth_n the_o same_o thing_n diverse_o express_v for_o to_o do_v that_o which_o be_v good_a and_o to_o do_v it_o well_o be_v the_o sum_n of_o both_o and_o it_o be_v plain_a that_o those_o perfection_n in_o god_n which_o our_o holiness_n be_v a_o imitation_n of_o be_v justice_n faithfulness_n and_o truth_n his_o patience_n mercy_n and_o charity_n his_o hatred_n of_o sin_n and_o his_o love_n of_o righteousness_n all_o which_o be_v moral_a perfection_n and_o therefore_o when_o in_o these_o thing_n we_o be_v follower_n of_o god_n our_o imitation_n of_o he_o do_v necessary_o become_v moral_a virtue_n and_o those_o duty_n which_o work_n in_o we_o the_o near_a likeness_n to_o christ_n jesus_n be_v meekness_n humility_n patience_n self-denial_n contempt_n of_o the_o world_n readiness_n to_o pass_v by_o wrong_n to_o forgive_v enemy_n to_o love_v and_o do_v good_a to_o all_o be_v all_o in_o the_o most_o proper_a sense_n moral_a virtue_n indeed_o to_o glorify_v god_n in_o jesus_n christ_n be_v a_o end_n of_o obedience_n which_o nature_n teach_v not_o but_o be_v make_v know_v by_o grace_n we_o be_v oblige_v to_o regard_v this_o end_n by_o the_o rule_n of_o morality_n which_o be_v derive_v from_o christ_n and_o cause_v by_o the_o spirit_n so_o that_o we_o have_v no_o reason_n to_o boast_v of_o their_o
expect_a from_o those_o special_a advantage_n which_o they_o enjoy_v in_o those_o place_n be_v because_o they_o be_v not_o so_o careful_a to_o improve_v the_o benefit_n to_o be_v have_v by_o prudent_a conversation_n for_o the_o man_n of_o reading_n do_v very_o much_o busy_v themselves_o about_o such_o conception_n which_o be_v not_o where_o to_o be_v find_v out_o of_o their_o own_o chamber_n the_o sense_n the_o custom_n the_o practice_n the_o judgement_n of_o the_o world_n be_v quite_o a_o different_a thing_n from_o what_o they_o imagine_v it_o to_o be_v in_o private_a and_o therefore_o it_o virtue_n because_o the_o name_n of_o religion_n have_v be_v so_o much_o appropriate_v to_o its_o form_n which_o man_n be_v apt_a to_o be_v take_v with_o when_o they_o may_v be_v easy_o reconcile_v with_o their_o vice_n and_o passion_n the_o pharisee_n do_v just_a so_o they_o only_o make_v great_a show_n of_o piety_n to_o cover_v their_o fraud_n and_o rapine_n virtue_n too_o great_a a_o regard_n to_o form_n disappoint_v the_o effect_n of_o real_a virtue_n they_o be_v curious_a to_o wash_v their_o hand_n but_o take_v no_o care_n to_o purify_v their_o heart_n they_o will_v fast_o and_o starve_v religion_n dwell_v not_o among_o its_o outside_n rite_n and_o solemnity_n but_o its_o proper_a temple_n be_v the_o heart_n and_o spirit_n of_o man_n it_o reside_v in_o the_o inmost_a recess_n of_o the_o soul_n now_o the_o formalist_n be_v only_o for_o the_o external_a act_n not_o for_o the_o internal_a habit_n of_o virtue_n and_o goodness_n his_o action_n how_o good_a soever_o issue_n only_o of_o some_o speculative_a head_n and_o those_o that_o be_v most_o earnest_a in_o these_o controversy_n be_v common_o most_o negligent_a of_o moral_a duty_n whereas_o true_a religion_n be_v a_o it_o to_o pardon_v injury_n to_o delight_v in_o make_v good_a triumph_n over_o evil_n and_o to_o satisfy_v itself_o as_o much_o by_o forgiveness_n as_o other_o be_v please_v with_o revenge_n for_o where_o the_o inward_a temper_n of_o the_o mind_n be_v true_o humble_a there_o a_o man_n be_v inward_a esteem_n of_o himself_o will_v be_v sober_a and_o modest_a his_o opinion_n of_o other_o candid_a and_o ingenuous_a wherefore_o if_o man_n take_v as_o much_o care_n to_o fill_v their_o soul_n with_o goodness_n as_o well_o as_o their_o fancy_n with_o the_o notion_n of_o it_o they_o will_v be_v as_o forth_o the_o character_n of_o formality_n i_o now_o descend_v to_o the_o second_o thing_n to_o discover_v by_o what_o way_n and_o method_n it_o defeat_v the_o practice_n of_o moral_a virtue_n that_o perceive_v its_o disguise_n we_o may_v not_o be_v impose_v upon_o now_o the_o artifices_fw-la by_o which_o man_n be_v apt_a to_o delude_v themselves_o be_v main_o these_o first_o they_o think_v they_o may_v be_v dispense_v with_o in_o the_o duty_n of_o practical_a virtue_n for_o their_o extraordinary_a strictness_n in_o some_o duty_n of_o godliness_n they_o weigh_v their_o act_n of_o devotion_n against_o all_o their_o miscarriage_n in_o morality_n if_o they_o do_v but_o fast_o twice_o a_o week_n they_o present_o believe_v that_o they_o may_v be_v allow_v to_o be_v froward_a and_o peevish_a hence_o it_o be_v that_o the_o gross_a vice_n be_v sometime_o call_v sin_n of_o infirmity_n for_o when_o they_o imagine_v themselves_o in_o god_n favour_n for_o frequent_v the_o place_n of_o worship_n for_o hear_v sermon_n and_o prayer_n they_o be_v ready_a to_o conclude_v their_o most_o heinous_a sin_n to_o be_v rather_o the_o weakness_n of_o their_o nature_n than_o obliquity_n of_o their_o will_n take_v the_o measure_n of_o virtue_n and_o vice_n not_o from_o the_o nature_n of_o the_o action_n themselves_o but_o from_o the_o condition_n of_o the_o person_n that_o commit_v they_o believe_v that_o if_o a_o man_n be_v once_o regenerate_v all_o his_o sin_n be_v instant_o change_v into_o infirmity_n thus_o the_o stoic_n of_o old_a make_v this_o one_o of_o their_o prime_a paradox_n that_o a_o wise_a man_n
of_o their_o sect_n may_v be_v overcome_v with_o wine_n but_o can_v never_o be_v drink_v though_o to_o be_v overcome_v with_o wine_n be_v downright_a drunkenness_n in_o a_o carnal_a epicurean_a yet_o it_o be_v something_o else_o in_o a_o great_a stoic_a uncurable_a how_o immorality_n become_v uncurable_a now_o immorality_n under_o the_o disguise_n of_o piety_n become_v uncurable_a passion_n and_o self-will_a be_v make_v more_o implacable_a by_o pretence_n to_o sanctity_n and_o godliness_n without_o virtue_n serve_v only_o to_o furnish_v the_o conscience_n with_o excuse_n against_o conviction_n for_o it_o be_v easy_a to_o convince_v a_o debauch_a person_n of_o his_o distemper_n from_o the_o blemish_n that_o be_v in_o all_o his_o action_n but_o hypocrisy_n by_o lodging_n itself_o in_o the_o heart_n and_o so_o by_o be_v undiscernible_a become_v fatal_a and_o the_o man_n be_v past_a recovery_n before_o he_o feel_v his_o malady_n therefore_o of_o all_o man_n he_o who_o have_v the_o form_n of_o godliness_n only_o be_v conceit_v with_o it_o be_v the_o most_o desperate_a and_o incorrigible_a sinner_n for_o he_o think_v the_o performance_n of_o the_o outward_a act_n of_o devotion_n will_v fix_v he_o so_o in_o a_o state_n of_o grace_n that_o he_o need_v not_o any_o virtue_n thus_o the_o supercilious_a and_o self-confident_a pharisee_n be_v at_o a_o great_a distance_n from_o heaven_n than_o publican_n and_o harlot_n for_o these_o our_o saviour_n can_v by_o his_o gentle_a reproof_n soften_v into_o a_o relent_a and_o pliable_a temper_n but_o as_o for_o the_o pharisee_n their_o mistake_a piety_n only_o make_v they_o more_o obdurate_a and_o obstinate_a in_o sin_n sear_v their_o conscience_n against_o the_o force_n of_o his_o sharp_a conviction_n so_o that_o he_o very_o just_o consign_v they_o up_o to_o a_o unrelenting_a and_o inflexible_a stubbornness_n second_o men_n deceive_v their_o own_o soul_n soul_n how_o man_n deceive_v their_o own_o soul_n when_o they_o think_v nature_n and_o unregeneracy_n but_o as_o for_o they_o that_o be_v enlighten_v by_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n they_o be_v direct_v by_o the_o motion_n thereof_o not_o by_o the_o law_n and_o dictate_v of_o nature_n hence_o the_o plain_a and_o practical_a principle_n of_o reason_n and_o honesty_n come_v to_o be_v neglect_v and_o ever_o after_o man_n be_v lead_v by_o giddy_a enthusiasm_n and_o be_v befool_v by_o the_o temper_n of_o their_o complexion_n they_o derive_v all_o their_o religious_a motion_n from_o the_o present_a state_n and_o constitution_n of_o their_o humour_n and_o according_a as_o sanguine_a or_o melancholy_a be_v predominant_a so_o the_o scene_n alter_v but_o the_o spirit_n of_o true_a religion_n be_v of_o a_o sedate_n temper_v and_o dwell_v in_o the_o intellectual_a part_n of_o a_o man_n work_v in_o what_o manner_n the_o spirit_n of_o religion_n work_v and_o do_v not_o work_v out_o or_o vent_v itself_o in_o flatulent_a passion_n but_o all_o its_o motion_n be_v gentle_a compose_v and_o ground_v upon_o the_o law_n of_o reason_n and_o sobriety_n the_o impression_n of_o the_o divine_a spirit_n be_v steady_a uniform_a and_o breathe_v not_o upon_o the_o passion_n but_o the_o reason_n of_o mankind_n all_o its_o assistance_n work_v in_o a_o calm_a and_o rational_a way_n they_o be_v not_o such_o unsettle_a and_o unaccountable_a motion_n as_o discompose_v but_o enlighten_v our_o understanding_n the_o spirit_n of_o god_n only_o discover_v the_o excellency_n and_o enforce_v the_o obligation_n of_o the_o law_n of_o god_n to_o the_o conscience_n of_o man_n and_o cheerful_o keep_v it_o from_o all_o mixture_n of_o imagination_n as_o know_v a_o religious_a fancy_n to_o be_v the_o great_a impostor_n in_o the_o world_n and_o there_o be_v nothing_o that_o spoil_v the_o nature_n of_o the_o best_a religion_n more_o than_o outrageous_a zeal_n which_o instead_o of_o sweeten_v embitter_v the_o mind_n of_o man_n so_o that_o those_o vice_n which_o moral_a other_o than_o that_o which_o the_o apostle_n call_v the_o work_n of_o the_o law_n write_v upon_o their_o heart_n and_o they_o have_v no_o other_o revelation_n make_v to_o they_o shall_v be_v judge_v by_o it_o and_o those_o that_o offend_v against_o this_o law_n shall_v be_v find_v guilty_a before_o god_n as_o well_o as_o those_o that_o have_v sin_v against_o a_o express_a revelation_n which_o be_v a_o plain_a evidence_n that_o these_o natural_a dictate_v have_v the_o force_n of_o a_o law_n otherwise_o man_n will_v not_o be_v guilty_a of_o any_o crime_n by_o act_v against_o they_o for_o it_o be_v a_o rule_n universal_o true_a that_o where_o there_o be_v no_o law_n there_o be_v no_o transgression_n and_o this_o i_o take_v to_o be_v the_o meaning_n of_o that_o obscure_a passage_n of_o the_o apostle_n rom._n v._n 13._o for_o until_o the_o law_n sin_n be_v in_o the_o world_n that_o be_v before_o the_o law_n be_v give_v unto_o moses_n man_n be_v capable_a of_o sin_v and_o therefore_o there_o be_v another_o law_n against_o which_o they_o offend_v for_o sin_n be_v not_o impute_v where_o there_o be_v no_o law_n but_o death_n reign_v from_o adam_n to_o moses_n even_o over_o they_o that_o have_v not_o sin_v after_o the_o similitude_n of_o adam_n transgression_n that_o be_v though_o they_o do_v not_o sin_n against_o any_o express_a law_n of_o god_n as_o adam_n do_v thus_o reason_n discover_v to_o we_o how_o that_o the_o natural_a dictate_v of_o our_o mind_n have_v the_o force_n of_o a_o law_n hence_o we_o may_v infer_v that_o mankind_n will_v have_v be_v under_o the_o obligation_n of_o religion_n though_o god_n have_v never_o make_v any_o immediate_a revelation_n of_o his_o mind_n and_o will_n unto_o they_o if_o this_o be_v not_o so_o the_o heathen_a who_o have_v no_o supernatural_a revelation_n from_o god_n can_v not_o have_v be_v guilty_a of_o sin_n nor_o liable_a to_o his_o judgement_n for_o if_o nothing_o be_v virtue_n or_o vice_n but_o what_o be_v either_o express_o command_v or_o forbid_v by_o god_n than_o all_o action_n will_v have_v be_v alike_o to_o the_o heathen_a but_o there_o be_v some_o thing_n natural_o good_a and_o some_o thing_n natural_o evil_a and_o man_n be_v bind_v to_o do_v the_o one_o and_o fly_v the_o other_o though_o god_n have_v never_o make_v any_o supernatural_a revelation_n of_o his_o will_n to_o they_o for_o if_o god_n have_v never_o forbid_v hatred_n and_o malice_n with_o deceit_n oppression_n violence_n and_o the_o like_a passion_n they_o will_v have_v appear_v evil_a in_o themselves_o and_o ought_v not_o to_o have_v be_v do_v by_o we_o because_o they_o be_v inconsistent_a with_o the_o peace_n of_o human_a society_n and_o contrary_a to_o the_o nature_n and_o reason_n of_o mankind_n so_o on_o the_o other_o hand_n the_o virtue_n opposite_a to_o these_o as_o love_n to_o god_n together_o with_o truth_n and_o justice_n one_o towards_o another_o have_v such_o goodness_n in_o they_o that_o they_o be_v commend_v to_o the_o like_n of_o mankind_n without_o the_o need_n of_o any_o absolute_a declaration_n to_o oblige_v man_n to_o the_o practice_n of_o they_o if_o these_o thing_n be_v not_o so_o the_o table_n may_v have_v be_v turn_v and_o all_o that_o which_o we_o now_o call_v virtue_n may_v have_v be_v forbid_v by_o god_n and_o thing_n will_v have_v be_v every_o whit_n as_o well_o and_o there_o will_v have_v be_v no_o difference_n only_o the_o name_n of_o thing_n will_v have_v be_v change_v unalterable_a the_o nature_n of_o good_a and_o evil_a be_v unalterable_a but_o i_o appeal_v to_o any_o one_o reason_n whether_o he_o can_v think_v it_o as_o virtuous_a a_o action_n to_o hate_n god_n as_o to_o love_v he_o to_o contemn_v as_o to_o honour_v he_o and_o whether_o malice_n envy_n hatred_n and_o ingratitude_n will_v have_v make_v as_o much_o for_o the_o peace_n of_o mankind_n as_o the_o practice_n of_o love_n and_o goodness_n will_v have_v do_v if_o they_o will_v not_o than_o it_o be_v manifest_a that_o there_o be_v something_o in_o the_o nature_n of_o thing_n that_o make_v the_o difference_n and_o so_o long_o as_o the_o nature_n of_o god_n and_o man_n remain_v what_o they_o be_v some_o thing_n will_v be_v in_o their_o own_o nature_n unalterable_o good_a and_o some_o thing_n evil_a which_o do_v not_o depend_v upon_o any_o arbitrary_a constitution_n but_o be_v found_v in_o the_o nature_n of_o the_o thing_n themselves_o vice_n the_o general_a consent_n of_o mankind_n show_v what_o be_v virtue_n and_o what_o be_v vice_n three_o what_o be_v virtue_n and_o what_o be_v vice_n be_v show_v to_o we_o by_o the_o general_a vote_n and_o consent_n of_o mankind_n which_o we_o do_v not_o extend_v to_o all_o the_o instance_n of_o virtue_n and_o vice_n but_o only_o to_o the_o great_a and_o more_o essential_a part_n of_o it_o
