mortification_n be_v a_o office_n of_o the_o spirit_n quest_n here_o import_v a_o question_n whether_o the_o word_n note_v spirit_n in_o this_o place_n be_v mean_v of_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n the_o holy_a ghost_n or_o the_o spirit_n of_o man_n our_o natural_a soul_n it_o be_v answer_v answ_n that_o the_o spirit_n execute_v this_o office_n of_o mortification_n be_v principal_o mean_v of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n who_o give_v the_o first_o motion_n of_o desire_n in_o every_o godly_a action_n it_o be_v also_o respective_o mean_v of_o the_o care_n and_o travel_v of_o our_o own_o spirit_n or_o soul_n 2.13_o note_n phil._n 2.13_o not_o that_o our_o own_o spirit_n be_v the_o cause_n of_o our_o mortification_n but_o be_v first_o cause_v by_o the_o holy_a spirit_n of_o god_n it_o be_v entertain_v and_o continue_v by_o the_o exercise_n of_o our_o own_o reform_a spirit_n our_o spirit_n have_v no_o such_o strength_n in_o their_o own_o nature_n but_o as_o they_o be_v prepare_v by_o the_o grace_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n for_o as_o in_o cast_v a_o stone_n or_o run_v of_o a_o bowl_n though_o the_o strength_n of_o the_o arm_n give_v the_o first_o motion_n to_o the_o bowl_n or_o stone_n yet_o afterward_o be_v the_o motion_n continue_v a_o competent_a time_n as_o well_o because_o of_o the_o powerful_a move_n of_o the_o arm_n as_o also_o because_o of_o the_o aptness_n or_o fitness_n of_o the_o thing_n move_v so_o in_o the_o office_n of_o mortification_n note_n note_n and_o in_o all_o other_o divine_a office_n of_o the_o soul_n though_o the_o soul_n move_v not_o itself_o to_o these_o holy_a action_n action_n no_o soul_n can_v move_v itself_o to_o divine_a action_n yet_o by_o reason_n of_o the_o spiritual_a nature_n of_o our_o soul_n when_o it_o be_v once_o move_v by_o the_o holy_a ghost_n it_o than_o continue_v such_o motion_n towards_o perfection_n so_o the_o prime_a honour_n of_o the_o holy_a exercise_n of_o mortification_n and_o so_o of_o all_o other_o spiritual_a office_n be_v whole_o to_o be_v ascribe_v to_o the_o power_n of_o god_n holy_a spirit_n which_o move_v in_o our_o heart_n every_o act_n and_o every_o purpose_n of_o well-doing_n and_o he_o do_v also_o illuminate_v we_o by_o his_o holy_a spirit_n infuse_v a_o new_a and_o heavenly_a light_n into_o our_o mind_n be_v so_o blind_a before_o as_o that_o it_o neither_o see_v nor_o can_v see_v the_o thing_n which_o do_v belong_v to_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n 2.14_o 1_o cor._n 2.14_o the_o natural_a man_n faith_n saint_n paul_n perceive_v not_o the_o thing_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n
