and_o governor_n as_o will_v be_v evident_a by_o compare_v the_o follow_a place_n luke_o 22._o 53._o our_o saviour_n say_v this_o be_v the_o power_n of_o darkness_n viz._n that_o whereby_o the_o seed_n of_o the_o serpent_n shall_v bruise_v his_o heel_n and_o this_o power_n of_o darkness_n our_o savoiour_n call_v john_n 12.31_o and_o 14.30_o the_o prince_n of_o this_o world_n which_o prince_n eph._n 2.2_o be_v call_v the_o prince_n of_o the_o power_n of_o the_o air_n the_o prince_n of_o the_o spirit_n that_o now_o work_v in_o the_o child_n of_o disobedience_n and_o v._o 3._o tell_v we_o that_o the_o operation_n of_o this_o spirit_n be_v the_o lust_n of_o the_o flesh_n whence_o it_o appear_v that_o this_o spirit_n have_v communion_n with_o the_o spirit_n of_o darkness_n moreover_o that_o man_n consist_v of_o these_o two_o spiritual_a essence_n and_o that_o they_o be_v opposite_a to_o each_o other_o how_o then_o can_v there_o be_v any_o union_n between_o they_o so_o as_o to_o cooperate_a towards_o and_o bring_v forth_o one_o birth_n this_o difficulty_n will_v be_v easy_o remove_v if_o first_o we_o consider_v what_o unity_n be_v know_v we_o therefore_o that_o two_o body_n though_o they_o differ_v in_o their_o nature_n may_v notwithstanding_o be_v unite_v together_o and_o cooperate_a in_o unity_n viz._n when_o the_o one_o of_o they_o be_v make_v subject_n to_o the_o other_o and_o in_o all_o respect_n comply_v with_o its_o operation_n so_o as_o that_o the_o one_o be_v passive_n and_o the_o other_o active_a and_o if_o such_o a_o unity_n as_o we_o have_v now_o describe_v be_v not_o between_o the_o fiery_a and_o watery_a essence_n nothing_o in_o the_o world_n can_v be_v able_a to_o subsist_v or_o operate_v any_o thing_n and_o therefore_o our_o saviour_n say_v math_n 6._o 24._o no_o man_n can_v serve_v two_o master_n for_o either_o he_o will_v hate_v the_o one_o and_o love_n the_o other_o or_o else_o he_o will_v hold_v to_o the_o one_o and_o despise_v cause_v death_n and_o corruption_n in_o the_o say_a body_n turn_v they_o to_o worm_n etc._n etc._n but_o some_o perhaps_o will_v object_v that_o i_o have_v say_v §_o 90._o that_o no_o two_o thing_n of_o a_o different_a original_a can_v be_v unite_v and_o how_o then_o these_o two_o viz._n light_n and_o darkness_n can_v be_v unite_v see_v they_o be_v contrary_a to_o one_o another_o to_o which_o i_o answer_v first_o that_o it_o be_v a_o fundamental_a truth_n that_o two_o thing_n of_o a_o different_a original_a can_v be_v unite_v but_o this_o be_v not_o the_o case_n here_o for_o we_o do_v not_o say_v that_o light_n and_o darkness_n have_v a_o different_a original_a but_o only_o that_o they_o have_v a_o contrary_a work_n yea_o quite_o contrary_o we_o do_v assert_v that_o though_o light_a and_o darkness_n be_v contrary_a to_o each_o other_o in_o operation_n yet_o that_o they_o be_v of_o one_o original_a and_o therefore_o can_v be_v unite_v together_o now_o that_o the_o light_n and_o darkness_n or_o the_o fiery_a and_o watery_a essence_n have_v one_o original_a we_o may_v know_v by_o this_o because_o the_o light_n come_v out_o of_o the_o darkness_n

themselves_o because_o their_o endlesness_n or_o infinity_o flow_v not_o from_o their_o own_o be_v but_o from_o the_o be_v of_o god_n which_o because_o it_o be_v always_o work_v and_o unchangeable_a must_v needs_o continual_o that_o be_v without_o beginning_n or_o end_n be_v present_a to_o all_o thing_n as_o uphold_v they_o etc._n etc._n so_o that_o albeit_o all_o being_n be_v without_o beginning_n yet_o they_o be_v not_o therefore_o the_o divine_a be_v but_o do_v differ_v infinite_o from_o the_o same_o and_o the_o perfection_n thereof_o as_o for_o example_n whereas_o god_n be_v always_o of_o and_o from_o himself_o without_o depend_v upon_o any_o other_o they_o be_v always_o depend_v upon_o god_n and_o not_o of_o themselves_o whereas_o god_n be_v the_o original_a of_o all_o thing_n they_o be_v but_o a_o outworking_a and_o so_o can_v produce_v the_o least_o thing_n whereas_o god_n be_v unchangcable_a they_o be_v in_o perpetual_a mutation_n whereas_o god_n be_v perfect_a they_o be_v deficient_a etc._n etc._n nor_o be_v it_o in_o the_o least_o inconsistent_a with_o the_o nature_n of_o man_n to_o conceive_v two_o infinite_n albeit_o they_o infinite_o differ_v in_o their_o perfection_n for_o see_v we_o know_v that_o god_n be_v the_o most_o perfect_a be_v in_o who_o be_v no_o variableness_n at_o all_o it_o follow_v from_o hence_o also_o that_o there_o can_v be_v the_o least_o change_n in_o his_o knowledge_n or_o work_v as_o be_v show_v §_o 10._o and_o see_v there_o can_v be_v no_o change_n neither_o in_o the_o knowledge_n nor_o in_o the_o work_n of_o god_n we_o may_v from_o hence_o learn_v the_o possibility_n of_o god_n work_n be_v infinite_a or_o without_o end_n or_o beginning_n while_o yet_o they_o be_v every_o way_n short_a of_o the_o perfection_n same_o thing_n although_o in_o word_n they_o deny_v it_o let_v we_o but_o once_o see_v what_o they_o mean_v by_o the_o word_n infinite_a they_o say_v then_o that_o infinite_a signify_v first_o that_o which_o have_v neither_o beginning_n nor_o end_n but_o that_o in_o that_o respect_n god_n be_v only_o to_o be_v infinite_a secon_o by_o infinite_a they_o understand_v somewhat_o that_o have_v a_o beginning_n but_o no_o end_n and_o thus_o they_o make_v man_n infinite_a or_o endless_a but_o who_o teach_v they_o that_o the_o word_n infinite_a have_v so_o different_a significantion_n whence_o do_v they_o infer_v this_o or_o with_o what_o certainty_n can_v they_o prove_v this_o various_a acceptation_n of_o the_o word_n infinite_a or_o endless_a methinks_v i_o see_v how_o this_o distinction_n be_v first_o hatch_v to_o wit_n because_o they_o be_v not_o able_a to_o make_v a_o right_a distinction_n betwixt_o god_n infiniteness_n and_o that_o of_o the_o creature_n and_o that_o if_o they_o shall_v assert_v the_o creature_n to_o be_v without_o all_o beginning_n they_o will_v differ_v nothing_o from_o the_o be_v of_o god_n just_a as_o if_o all_o that_o have_v no_o beginning_n must_v needs_o be_v god_n himself_o the_o contrary_a of_o which_o have_v be_v prove_v §_o 22._o wherefore_o to_o cover_v their_o ignorance_n and_o to_o have_v something_o to_o answer_v to_o their_o adversary_n they_o invent_v this_o distinction_n upon_o the_o word_n infinite_a viz._n that_o it_o betoken_v more_o thing_n than_o one_o a_o be_v without_o beginning_n or_o end_n as_o the_o be_v of_o god_n and_o a_o be_v with_o begin_v but_o without_o end_n as_o that_o of_o the_o creature_n and_o that_o distinction_n be_v judge_v most_o necessary_a that_o so_o the_o be_v of_o god_n may_v not_o be_v injure_v nor_o diminish_v in_o its_o honour_n on_o the_o one_o side_n nor_o the_o creature_n on_o the_o other_o side_n exalt_v too_o high_a by_o ascribe_v any_o thing_n to_o it_o that_o do_v not_o belong_v to_o it_o which_o notwithstanding_o do_v not_o at_o all_o follow_v from_o what_o we_o say_v for_o though_o the_o creature_n be_v also_o without_o beginning_n yet_o it_o differ_v that_o the_o creature_n have_v indeed_o a_o beginning_n but_o no_o end_n thus_o if_o the_o creature_n first_o receive_v its_o be_v in_o its_o creation_n if_o follow_v certain_o that_o god_n be_v not_o infinite_a in_o his_o work_n that_o be_v that_o god_n do_v not_o always_o work_v the_o same_o thing_n but_o have_v a_o beginning_n with_o respect_n to_o his_o work_v and_o so_o god_n be_v not_o infinite_a in_o his_o work_v which_o be_v a_o contradiction_n to_o god_n and_o his_o work_v which_o be_v unchangeable_a according_a to_o §_o 10._o as_o also_o to_o §_o 21._o where_o it_o be_v prove_v that_o god_n be_v always_o work_v the_o same_o thing_n beside_o this_o will_v infer_v time_n or_o something_o temporal_a in_o god_n &_o so_o all_o thing_n will_v not_o be_v always_o present_a to_o god_n the_o contrary_a of_o which_o be_v prove_v ●_o 13.14_o if_o god_n work_v have_v a_o beginning_n and_o there_o must_v be_v in_o god_n a_o time_n or_o beginning_n of_o work_v it_o which_o be_v inconsistent_a with_o the_o continual_a presence_n of_o god_n it_o also_o contradict_v god_n omniscience_n that_o the_o be_v of_o the_o creature_n shall_v begin_v in_o time_n because_o all_o knowledge_n include_v a_o idea_n of_o the_o thing_n conceive_v if_o then_o the_o be_v of_o thing_n be_v first_o bring_v forth_o in_o time_n then_o god_n can_v not_o always_o have_v have_v a_o idea_n of_o all_o his_o work_n because_o that_o idea_n be_v the_o be_v of_o the_o thing_n as_o be_v prove_v §_o 15._o and_o so_o god_n according_a to_o their_o hypothesis_n can_v not_o be_v omniscient_a or_o they_o say_v that_o there_o be_v thing_n that_o have_v a_o beginning_n but_o no_o end_n the_o question_n be_v whether_o this_o be_v intelligible_a or_o no_o and_o whether_o they_o can_v show_v we_o any_o one_o thing_n in_o nature_n that_o have_v beginning_n which_o have_v not_o also_o a_o end_n very_o as_o to_o the_o creature_n so_o far_o as_o they_o be_v visible_a and_o tangible_a they_o have_v not_o only_o a_o beginning_n but_o also_o a_o end_n as_o experience_n teach_v we_o in_o all_o the_o creature_n to_o wit_n that_o their_o body_n do_v change_v as_o to_o their_o form_n and_o do_v not_o remain_v as_o they_o be_v at_o first_o form_v yea_o there_o be_v nothing_o they_o can_v assign_v that_o have_v have_v a_o beginning_n which_o shall_v not_o also_o have_v a_o end_n that_o be_v that_o what_o they_o call_v a_o beginning_n have_v not_o also_o its_o end_n but_o he_o that_o shall_v conclude_v from_o these_o word_n of_o i_o either_o ignorant_o or_o malicious_o that_o therefore_o man_n because_o he_o have_v a_o beginning_n shall_v also_o have_v a_o end_n and_o consequent_o that_o there_o shall_v nothing_o remain_v of_o nor_o for_o man_n after_o this_o life_n will_v wrest_v my_o word_n and_o make_v they_o say_v the_o quite_o contrary_a of_o what_o i_o intend_v for_o my_o aim_n in_o this_o be_v only_o to_o show_v that_o that_o which_o have_v no_o end_n can_v also_o not_o have_v have_v any_o beginning_n and_o that_o what_o be_v essential_a of_o man_n viz._n his_o spirit_n have_v no_o end_n can_v also_o have_v have_v no_o beginning_n &_o consequent_o that_o he_o be_v infinite_a or_o without_o all_o end_n but_o some_o body_n will_v perhaps_o say_v that_o he_o can_v conceive_v something_o that_o have_v have_v a_o beginning_n but_o which_o shall_v have_v no_o end_n and_o consequent_o that_o it_o be_v not_o impossible_a nor_o contrary_a to_o nature_n as_o for_o example_n we_o can_v conceive_v a_o infinite_a number_n and_o a_o infinite_a line_n and_o these_o have_v a_o beginning_n but_o no_o end_n but_o this_o objection_n due_o consider_v will_v not_o only_o fall_v but_o even_o on_o the_o contrary_n serve_v for_o a_o proof_n that_o that_o which_o have_v a_o beginning_n have_v also_o a_o end_n for_o example_n suppose_v any_o one_o conceive_v a_o number_n of_o hundred_o or_o million_o of_o thousand_o he_o can_v always_o add_v something_o to_o it_o so_o that_o the_o number_n that_o any_o one_o conceive_v have_v always_o a_o end_n because_o he_o can_v always_o augment_v it_o

what_o god_n aim_v at_o by_o he_o because_o god_n create_v man_n after_o the_o most_o perfect_a manner_n from_o all_o which_o in_o then_o follow_v that_o the_o sinner_n can_v be_v make_v perfect_a in_o another_o way_n but_o by_o receive_v again_o that_o very_a image_n of_o god_n which_o he_o lose_v by_o sin_n §_o 64._o now_o that_o the_o salvation_n of_o the_o sinner_n consist_v in_o the_o unless_o he_o receive_v again_o the_o image_n of_o god_n yet_o this_o difficulty_n still_o remain_v in_o the_o case_n to_o find_v out_o how_o and_o by_o what_o mean_v the_o sinner_n can_v recover_v this_o image_n of_o god_n again_o §_o 66._o it_o be_v then_o a_o universal_a truth_n in_o nature_n that_o nothing_o can_v be_v meliorate_v nor_o unite_v with_o another_o thing_n so_o as_o to_o bring_v forth_o fruit_n thereby_o except_o there_o be_v a_o previous_a suffering_n die_a or_o mortification_n to_o wit_n such_o a_o suffering_n death_n or_o mortification_n as_o tend_v to_o melioration_n transplantation_n and_o cut_v off_o the_o branch_n and_o prune_v the_o root_n and_o not_o one_o or_o more_o of_o the_o branch_n only_o because_o the_o tree_n bear_v the_o branch_n and_o the_o branch_n not_o the_o tree_n wherefore_o although_o '_o some_o of_o the_o branch_n shall_v be_v cut_v off_o and_o graft_v upon_o another_o tree_n those_o branch_n which_o be_v so_o cut_v off_o and_o re-engrafted_n will_v in_o themselves_o be_v amend_v but_o not_o the_o whole_a tree_n from_o which_o they_o be_v cut_v off_o to_o make_v this_o plain_a there_o be_v no_o better_a way_n than_o for_o we_o to_o make_v a_o trial_n from_o our_o own_o self_n as_o for_o example_n when_o the_o whole_a man_n be_v sick_a and_o out_o of_o order_n so_o that_o the_o distemper_n proceed_v from_o the_o life_n itself_o and_o not_o from_o the_o unsoundness_n of_o any_o one_o of_o the_o part_n or_o member_n the_o query_n be_v whether_o any_o one_o can_v be_v so_o foolish_a as_o to_o endeavour_v to_o restore_v his_o whole_a be_v unto_o health_n by_o cut_v off_o a_o arm_n or_o a_o leg_n or_o by_o apply_v remedy_n to_o they_o very_o no_o but_o he_o will_v endeavour_v to_o remove_v the_o cause_n

ourselves_o prove_v §_o 68.69_o etc._n etc._n but_o that_o be_v not_o the_o question_n here_o who_o it_o be_v that_o alone_o can_v restore_v man_n but_o we_o be_v here_o inquire_v on_o what_o manner_n and_o by_o what_o mean_n or_o way_n christ_n can_v restore_v sinner_n as_o may_v be_v see_v from_o §_o 76._o now_o the_o mean_n to_o reunite_v sinner_n to_o the_o image_n of_o god_n again_o i_o say_v be_v that_o christ_n shall_v take_v upon_o he_o manhood_n as_o be_v prove_v §_o 77._o therefore_o we_o be_v here_o only_o to_o consider_v whether_o this_o mean_n that_o be_v whether_o that_o manhood_n which_o christ_n do_v take_v upon_o he_o be_v a_o fit_a mean_n whereby_o all_o man_n can_v be_v unite_v again_o to_o the_o image_n of_o god_n or_o no_o therefore_o this_o exception_n have_v here_o no_o place_n and_o this_o our_o answer_n may_v very_o well_o suffice_v but_o to_o discuss_v this_o shift_n a_o little_a more_o narrow_o i_o say_v that_o if_o christ_n have_v impart_v salvation_n unto_o all_o mankind_n only_o in_o virtue_n of_o his_o spiritual_a and_o divine_a be_v than_o he_o need_v not_o to_o have_v become_v man_n and_o to_o have_v suffer_v death_n and_o that_o christ_n become_a man_n will_v then_o have_v be_v utter_o needless_a and_o of_o no_o advantage_n unto_o sinner_n because_o christ_n have_v that_o his_o divine_a power_n before_o he_o become_v man_n and_o do_v not_o receive_v it_o by_o his_o become_a man_n but_o if_o they_o will_v say_v that_o christ_n as_o he_o saviour_n be_v to_o become_v man_n as_o we_o ourselves_o have_v prove_v the_o necessity_n thereof_o §_o 76.77_o i_o ask_v such_o what_o advantage_n christ_n become_a man_n have_v effect_v and_o whether_o christ_n by_o become_a man_n can_v reconcile_v all_o man_n if_o he_o have_v not_o take_v upon_o he_o the_o manhood_n of_o adam_n as_o the_o stem_n or_o root_n of_o all_o mankind_n the_o contrary_n of_o which_o we_o have_v just_a now_o show_v objection_n v._n but_o against_o this_o position_n that_o christ_n must_v needs_o have_v take_v upon_o he_o adam_n manhood_n to_o reunite_v all_o man_n to_o the_o the_o image_n of_o god_n again_o this_o objection_n will_v still_o be_v make_v viz._n that_o if_o christ_n have_v take_v upon_o he_o adam_n manhood_n and_o so_o have_v unite_v adam_n again_o with_o the_o image_n of_o god_n he_o shall_v at_o the_o same_o time_n have_v also_o unite_v all_o man_n with_o the_o image_n of_o god_n because_o they_o be_v the_o part_n of_o adam_n as_o we_o ourselves_o have_v affirm_v in_o answer_n to_o the_o former_a objection_n and_o yet_o we_o see_v nothing_o less_o than_o that_o all_o man_n be_v one_o with_o the_o image_n of_o god_n but_o daily_a experience_n show_v we_o the_o contrary_a and_o consequent_o that_o it_o seem_v to_o no_o purpose_n that_o christ_n shall_v have_v take_v upon_o he_o the_o manhood_n of_o adam_n more_o than_o that_o of_o any_o other_o man._n answer_v but_o this_o objection_n discover_v more_o the_o objector_n ignorance_n of_o the_o order_n of_o nature_n than_o any_o real_a contradiction_n for_o example_n be_v it_o not_o evident_a from_o experience_n that_o the_o fruit_n of_o a_o woman_n with_o child_n be_v a_o part_n of_o she_o very_o yes_o because_o she_o do_v some_o time_n change_v the_o form_n thereof_o in_o the_o womb_n wherefore_o her_o life_n have_v the_o direction_n over_o forasmuch_o as_o they_o partake_v of_o the_o same_o nourishment_n but_o nature_n teach_v we_o the_o contrary_a viz._n that_o each_o kind_n have_v its_o own_o form_n and_o flesh_n whence_o it_o be_v evident_a that_o each_o kind_n do_v unchangeable_o retain_v its_o own_o life_n as_o have_v be_v show_v in_o the_o observation_n concern_v man_n §_o 33._o but_o some_o will_v object_v if_o the_o soul_n operation_n and_o that_o the_o body_n thereupon_o die_v yet_o we_o shall_v find_v that_o these_o dead_a body_n afterward_o turn_v to_o worm_n etc._n etc._n yea_o experience_n teach_v we_o that_o sometime_o the_o hair_n and_o nail_n of_o a_o dead_a body_n do_v grow_v which_o prove_v that_o the_o body_n have_v its_o own_o life_n beside_o the_o soul_n or_o general_a life_n which_o uphold_v the_o body_n in_o its_o form_n or_o essence_n as_o long_o as_o she_o continue_v in_o her_o former_a work_v or_o efficiency_n §_o 95._o but_o some_o will_v ask_v why_o since_o the_o body_n have_v its_o own_o life_n man_n do_v notwithstanding_o stand_v in_o need_n of_o a_o soul_n or_o life_n for_o answer_v to_o this_o i_o desire_v the_o enquirer_n to_o consider_v that_o man_n body_n be_v feed_v by_o the_o creature_n he_o enjoy_v and_o partake_v of_o the_o life_n of_o they_o which_o life_n of_o the_o creature_n if_o it_o be_v not_o transmute_v in_o man_n so_o as_o to_o comply_v with_o the_o operation_n or_o efficiency_n of_o man_n it_o can_v never_o be_v of_o use_n for_o the_o support_n or_o preservation_n of_o man._n to_o the_o end_n therefore_o that_o the_o creature_n and_o their_o life_n may_v be_v for_o the_o sustenance_n of_o the_o body_n of_o man_n it_o be_v necessary_a that_o man_n shall_v have_v his_o own_o life_n and_o that_o the_o say_a life_n shall_v be_v master_n and_o dispose_v of_o the_o life_n of_o the_o creature_n according_a to_o its_o pleasure_n as_o a_o general_n govern_v and_o command_v his_o whole_a army_n wherefore_o it_o be_v absolute_o necessary_a that_o man_n shall_v have_v a_o soul_n or_o life_n that_o may_v superintend_v rule_n and_o govern_v all_o the_o life_n and_o spirit_n that_o be_v in_o his_o body_n of_o the_o soul_n or_o central_n spirit_n have_v
