entrance_n into_o religion_n neither_o be_v this_o the_o way_n that_o i_o teach_v he_o &_o wherein_o i_o walk_v myself_o neither_o can_v he_o but_o know_v in_o his_o own_o conscience_n that_o this_o his_o life_n which_o be_v far_o from_o that_o of_o a_o religious_a man_n discontent_v i_o great_o and_o therefore_o he_o be_v against_o his_o will_n inward_o torment_v with_o most_o bitter_a sting_n of_o conscience_n though_o outward_o he_o show_v it_o not_o and_o when_o time_n come_v shall_v receive_v his_o deserve_a punishment_n the_o servant_n who_o be_v privy_a to_o his_o master_n will_n &_o do_v it_o not_o while_o he_o be_v able_a if_o he_o be_v not_o a_o very_a fool_n merit_v severe_o to_o be_v punish_v for_o it_o 3._o if_o he_o have_v to_o deal_v with_o his_o superior_n he_o be_v much_o afflict_v and_o trouble_v for_o since_o he_o be_v neither_o obedient_a nor_o love_v religious_a discipline_n it_o be_v not_o in_o he_o to_o keep_v common_a peace_n with_o they_o and_o therefore_o it_o must_v needs_o be_v that_o many_o thing_n be_v in_o like_a manner_n do_v that_o be_v one_o while_o discontent_a to_o himself_o and_o otherwhiles_o to_o the_o superior_n beside_o that_o the_o poor_a &_o compassionate_a superior_n be_v grieve_v not_o know_v how_o they_o may_v deal_v with_o he_o that_o he_o may_v be_v holpen_v for_o if_o they_o deal_v favourable_o &_o after_o a_o indulgent_a manner_n with_o he_o he_o be_v accustom_v to_o liberty_n abuse_v their_o gentleness_n and_o become_v the_o more_o proud_a if_o they_o handle_v he_o with_o more_o severity_n by_o force_v he_o to_o do_v his_o duty_n then_o as_o one_o impatient_a of_o so_o hard_a discipline_n he_o shake_v off_o the_o yoke_n thereof_o and_o trouble_v the_o religion_n if_o any_o thing_n be_v command_v he_o he_o refuse_v to_o do_v it_o if_o penance_n be_v enjoin_v he_o he_o complain_v and_o murmure_v that_o he_o live_v so_o still_o among_o the_o rest_n after_o his_o own_o will_n be_v nothing_o expedient_a for_o the_o long_o the_o custom_n of_o do_v ill_o be_v continue_v the_o worse_a it_o make_v the_o man_n and_o by_o his_o bad_a example_n he_o hurt_v &_o mislead_v the_o more_o whence_o it_o follow_v that_o a_o religious_a man_n who_o contemn_v the_o desire_n of_o perfection_n live_v disorderly_a and_o make_v no_o reckon_n of_o entertain_v peace_n with_o superior_n must_v needs_o be_v trouble_v with_o a_o continual_a heaviness_n and_o bitterness_n of_o mind_n certes_o he_o can_v but_o be_v bad_a &_o become_v every_o day_n worse_o than_o other_o who_o contradict_v and_o resist_v his_o superior_n and_o better_n 4._o again_o if_o he_o turn_v himself_o to_o other_o religious_a person_n among_o who_o he_o live_v he_o find_v no_o comfort_n at_o all_o for_o if_o he_o perceive_v that_o the_o wise_a &_o spiritual_a brethren_n make_v very_o little_a reckon_n of_o he_o &_o shun_v his_o conversation_n and_o company_n in_o what_o they_o can_v he_o can_v but_o be_v much_o trouble_v &_o move_v in_o mind_n and_o therefore_o be_v force_v to_o keep_v company_n with_o his_o like_a who_o be_v desirous_a of_o a_o more_o free_a and_o disorder_a life_n neither_o can_v he_o yet_o receive_v any_o solid_a comfort_n from_o they_o for_o that_o where_o the_o spirit_n of_o devotion_n be_v not_o there_o neither_o peace_n nor_o joy_n can_v be_v of_o continuance_n the_o friendship_n of_o the_o bad_a be_v not_o long_o last_v and_o be_v ever_o suspect_v and_o where_o suspicion_n reign_v the_o mind_n be_v ever_o in_o suspense_n and_o doubtful_a and_o therefore_o he_o can_v possible_o be_v true_o merry_a 5._o final_o if_o a_o bad_a religious_a man_n turn_v his_o eye_n upon_o himself_o he_o have_v no_o cause_n of_o rejoice_v but_o of_o lament_v for_o since_o he_o have_v no_o part_n in_o true_a virtue_n at_o all_o he_o have_v none_o to_o direct_v he_o in_o his_o action_n nor_o who_o may_v defend_v and_o help_v he_o in_o his_o temptation_n and_o so_o he_o become_v prone_a to_o fall_v yea_o &_o to_o apostasy_n also_o again_o what_o joy_n can_v he_o have_v who_o must_v take_v great_a pain_n without_o hope_n of_o spiritual_a profit_n as_o long_o as_o he_o be_v in_o religion_n he_o must_v needs_o exercise_v himself_o in_o the_o ordinary_a office_n of_o the_o same_o which_o because_o he_o do_v unwilling_o or_o with_o loathe_v murmur_a and_o other_o imperfection_n he_o lose_v all_o his_o merit_n beside_o that_o what_o comfort_n can_v he_o have_v who_o receyve_v a_o torment_n in_o wholesome_a and_o meritorious_a action_n who_o want_v spirit_n and_o can_v be_v holpen_v if_o he_o be_v to_o pray_v he_o be_v in_o pain_n if_o to_o hear_v a_o sermon_n or_o some_o pious_a and_o spiritual_a talk_n he_o loathe_v it_o if_o discourse_n about_o the_o purchase_n of_o virtue_n he_o may_v not_o endure_v to_o hear_v it_o o_o miserable_a religious_a man_n who_o drink_v gall_n when_o other_o taste_v of_o most_o sweet_a honey_n it_o be_v a_o sign_n of_o death_n when_o the_o sick_a person_n become_v the_o weak_a by_o receive_v a_o medicine_n 6._o moreover_o in_o endure_a tribulation_n he_o be_v so_o much_o the_o more_o afflict_a by_o how_o much_o less_o he_o be_v arm_v &_o prepare_v against_o they_o like_v unto_o a_o little_a boat_n when_o a_o sore_a tempest_n arise_v want_v both_o oar_n &_o stern_a by_o one_o thing_n alone_o he_o may_v seem_v he_o may_v be_v ease_v of_o all_o his_o trouble_n and_o misery_n and_o take_v some_o poor_a refreshment_n and_o quiet_a and_o that_o be_v by_o death_n but_o death_n unless_o he_o want_v the_o use_n of_o reason_n will_v rather_o increase_v his_o fear_n and_o terror_n for_o the_o soon_o it_o shall_v come_v the_o soon_o shall_v he_o be_v present_v to_o my_o tribunal_n to_o give_v a_o account_n of_o every_o moment_n spend_v in_o religion_n without_o spiritual_a profit_n for_o death_n be_v to_o the_o bad_a &_o wicked_a the_o begin_n of_o more_o heavy_a punishment_n that_o a_o religious_a man_n ought_v with_o great_a confidence_n to_o labour_v to_o the_o attain_v of_o perfection_n chap._n xiiii_o lord_n if_o i_o shall_v mount_v up_o to_o the_o tree_n of_o virtue_n to_o gather_v of_o the_o sweet_a fruit_n of_o perfection_n i_o find_v not_o where_o i_o may_v stay_v myself_o for_o the_o tree_n be_v very_o high_a and_o my_o force_n very_o weak_a my_o nature_n be_v afraid_a my_o body_n conceyve_v a_o horror_n of_o it_o and_o if_o it_o be_v press_v forward_o it_o kick_v and_o refuse_v and_o therefore_o i_o be_o force_v to_o stay_v upon_o the_o ground_n beneath_o because_o it_o be_v impossible_a for_o i_o to_o get_v up_o high_o but_o tell_v i_o son_n how_o i_o pray_v thou_o can_v it_o be_v say_v to_o be_v impossible_a when_o as_o all_o religious_a as_o many_o as_o be_v now_o in_o heaven_n and_o many_o more_o who_o be_v still_o live_v on_o earth_n have_v not_o without_o their_o exceed_a great_a commendation_n mount_v up_o to_o it_o and_o gather_v of_o the_o wish_a fruit_n of_o perfection_n yet_o i_o must_v confess_v that_o some_o come_v to_o the_o height_n of_o it_o more_o speedy_o and_o some_o more_o slow_o some_o with_o more_o merit_n &_o some_o with_o less_o and_o therefore_o for_o every_o one_o that_o have_v a_o will_n it_o be_v neither_o impossible_a to_o follow_v they_o nor_o very_o hard_a if_o thy_o force_n be_v not_o sufficient_a thou_o have_v my_o help_n at_o hand_n if_o thy_o industry_n and_o cooperation_n be_v not_o want_v my_o grace_n shall_v not_o fail_v thou_o 2._o to_o get_v up_o to_o the_o height_n of_o this_o tree_n and_o to_o gather_v the_o fruit_n of_o perfection_n be_v to_o get_v the_o victory_n and_o to_o obtain_v the_o victory_n a_o man_n must_v needs_o carry_v himself_o manful_o to_o statue_n and_o picture_n may_v a_o sceptre_n &_o crown_n be_v give_v though_o they_o never_o come_v to_o the_o battle_n but_o not_o to_o a_o reasonable_a creature_n and_o free_a to_o who_o the_o crown_n of_o virtue_n be_v his_o reward_n and_o the_o reward_n be_v not_o give_v without_o merit_n nor_o merit_n without_o encounter_n precedent_n and_o go_v before_o if_o then_o thou_o aspire_v to_o the_o crown_n of_o virtue_n &_o the_o perfection_n of_o it_o thou_o must_v needs_o prepare_v thyself_o to_o the_o pain_n &_o to_o the_o fight_n as_o other_o have_v do_v before_o thou_o he_o know_v not_o what_o a_o reward_n be_v who_o expect_v it_o without_o labour_n &_o pain_n see_v then_o the_o hope_n and_o confidence_n of_o obtain_v perfection_n rely_v not_o only_o on_o the_o help_n of_o my_o grace_n but_o on_o thy_o own_o cooperation_n also_o thou_o must_v of_o necessity_n on_o thy_o part_n perform_v the_o condition_n that_o i_o be_o now_o to_o set_v down_o 3._o first_o necessary_a it_o be_v that_o thou_o have_v a_o true_a and_o sincere_a
to_o the_o mortify_n of_o their_o flesh_n some_o to_o fasting_n other_o to_o discipline_n watch_n and_o to_o other_o affliction_n of_o that_o kind_n know_v that_o they_o be_v the_o preservative_n antidote_n of_o purity_n and_o when_o these_o remedye_n will_v not_o help_v let_v they_o use_v more_o effectual_a whence_o it_o be_v that_o some_o for_o the_o extinguish_n and_o put_v out_o the_o heat_n of_o lust_n do_v cast_v themselves_o into_o most_o freeze_a cold_a water_n some_o into_o snow_n other_o cast_v themselves_o naked_a into_o nettle_n &_o thorn_n some_o do_v burn_v off_o their_o under_o subjection_n but_o by_o use_v some_o severity_n and_o rigour_n to_o it_o and_o a_o body_n untamed_a and_o unruly_a can_v not_o away_o with_o chastity_n and_o in_o conclusion_n either_o clean_o abandon_v it_o or_o preserve_v it_o not_o long_o unstayned_a of_o the_o vow_n of_o obedience_n and_o wherein_o religious_a obedience_n consist_v chap._n xx._n lord_n though_o i_o desire_v much_o to_o i_o be_o over_o slow_a neither_o can_v i_o well_o resolve_v what_o i_o shall_v do_v i_o do_v further_o attempt_v many_o thing_n but_o yet_o with_o a_o unfortunate_a event_n 2._o son_n in_o this_o he_o stumble_v at_o least_o or_o go_v out_o of_o his_o way_n and_o though_o thou_o may_v be_v provide_v of_o knowledge_n &_o of_o light_n yet_o where_o be_v thy_o force_n and_o help_v necessary_a for_o the_o overcome_a of_o the_o difficultye_n that_o often_o occur_v for_o so_o violent_a be_v the_o perturbation_n of_o the_o mind_n as_o they_o carry_v away_o even_o those_o who_o seem_v to_o
