virtue_n of_o st._n john_n wort_n as_o the_o sunbeam_n pierce_v through_o glass_n so_o this_o virtue_n pierce_v through_o the_o spirit_n of_o man_n and_o beast_n even_o as_o musk_n which_o by_o its_o smell_n get_v into_o the_o inmost_a part_n of_o the_o brain_n therefore_o worm_n fly_v from_o this_o herb_n and_o leave_v the_o place_n where_o it_o be_v this_o herb_n be_v also_o good_a for_o wound_n not_o as_o it_o be_v in_o itself_o but_o if_o it_o be_v right_o prepare_v and_o let_v every_o surgeon_n know_v that_o there_o be_v not_o any_o herb_n in_o all_o germany_n or_o in_o any_o other_o nation_n who_o virtue_n by_o preparation_n can_v be_v so_o much_o exalt_v for_o the_o cure_n of_o wound_n as_o st._n john_n wort_n and_o this_o virtue_n be_v so_o exalt_v can_v be_v full_o describe_v by_o he_o who_o have_v create_v we_o both_o to_o preserve_v we_o from_o disease_n and_o to_o drive_v out_o disease_n hence_o we_o may_v conclude_v that_o neither_o disease_n bring_v death_n neither_o be_v death_n the_o cause_n of_o disease_n nay_o death_n and_o disease_n agree_v no_o better_a than_o fire_n and_o water_n a_o natural_a disease_n hate_v death_n as_o every_o part_n of_o the_o live_a body_n hate_v death_n i_o intend_v in_o this_o discourse_n to_o speak_v to_o those_o of_o my_o own_o way_n who_o by_o great_a skill_n and_o daily_a experience_n have_v search_v into_o and_o do_v know_v the_o propertieâ—_n and_o nature_n of_o thing_n which_o be_v hide_v and_o unknown_a to_o presumptuous_a and_o titular_a doctor_n and_o i_o do_v affirm_v this_o as_o a_o most_o certain_a truth_n that_o the_o body_n may_v be_v restore_v change_v to_o the_o better_a yea_o whole_o renew_v as_o it_o be_v to_o be_v plain_o see_v in_o metal_n which_o may_v be_v so_o purify_v that_o they_o shall_v be_v afterward_o free_a from_o any_o rust_n so_o likewise_o dead_a body_n if_o they_o be_v embalm_v do_v not_o putrify_v afterward_o some_o perhaps_o may_v dislike_v my_o write_n because_o they_o be_v short_a and_o because_o of_o those_o example_n which_o i_o use_v but_o my_o write_n be_v not_o therefore_o to_o be_v slight_v see_v i_o use_v only_o the_o example_n of_o such_o thing_n which_o be_v or_o may_v be_v do_v by_o nature_n as_o in_o this_o comparison_n of_o metal_n with_o the_o body_n of_o man_n i_o know_v that_o there_o be_v great_a difference_n betwixt_o these_o two_o yet_o they_o be_v both_o preserve_v one_o way_n as_o experience_n teach_v if_o a_o dead_a body_n can_v be_v preserve_v by_o balsam_n from_o putrefaction_n or_o decay_n how_o much_o more_o may_v a_o live_a body_n be_v so_o preserve_v now_o there_o be_v three_o part_n of_o man_n age_n viz._n young_a age_n middle_a age_n and_o old_a age_n and_o each_o of_o these_o must_v have_v such_o medicine_n for_o prolong_v life_n as_o be_v proper_a and_o suitable_a to_o they_o therefore_o there_o must_v be_v also_o three_o kind_n of_o medicine_n for_o the_o conservation_n of_o life_n according_a to_o these_o three_o age_n we_o may_v likewise_o say_v that_o there_o be_v three_o part_n in_o long_a life_n according_a to_o those_o three_o part_n of_o man_n age_n for_o many_o may_v die_v in_o their_o infancy_n many_o in_o their_o middle_a age_n etc._n etc._n if_o their_o life_n be_v not_o prolong_v by_o the_o help_n of_o medicine_n we_o can_v have_v any_o certainty_n that_o a_o infant_n or_o a_o strong_a young_a man_n shall_v outlive_v a_o weak_a old_a man_n no_o part_n of_o man_n age_n have_v any_o certain_a time_n of_o death_n appoint_v to_o it_o the_o infant_n in_o the_o mother_n womb_n may_v have_v many_o thing_n befall_v it_o which_o may_v be_v the_o cause_n of_o great_a weakness_n in_o the_o child_n or_o incline_v the_o child_n to_o disease_n and_o that_o infant_n which_o be_v very_o weak_a when_o it_o be_v bear_v the_o strength_n of_o nature_n be_v abate_v and_o lessen_v in_o it_o as_o it_o be_v in_o old_a age_n and_o therefore_o those_o medicine_n which_o be_v the_o help_n of_o long_a life_n must_v be_v give_v to_o this_o infant_n anoint_v the_o nurse_n breast_n therewith_o which_o the_o child_n do_v suck_v etc._n etc._n as_o you_o shall_v hear_v more_o at_o large_a afterward_o in_o the_o practice_n of_o long_a life_n for_o by_o these_o medicine_n of_o long_a life_n the_o strength_n of_o nature_n be_v increase_v and_o life_n prolong_v after_o the_o same_o manner_n in_o a_o infant_n as_o it_o be_v in_o old_a age_n or_o if_o a_o young_a man_n run_v into_o so_o great_a excess_n of_o drink_v or_o venery_n etc._n etc._n that_o thereby_o
but_o by_o their_o incorruptible_a essence_n in_o this_o practice_n of_o preserve_v the_o body_n three_o thing_n be_v to_o be_v observe_v viz._n the_o government_n of_o the_o body_n the_o disposition_n of_o the_o body_n the_o medicine_n itself_o whereby_o the_o body_n be_v preserve_v as_o for_o the_o government_n of_o the_o body_n in_o respect_n of_o the_o country_n or_o place_n where_o we_o live_v it_o be_v not_o so_o much_o considerable_a as_o the_o other_o two_o indeed_o the_o chief_a thing_n that_o we_o be_v here_o to_o consider_v be_v the_o medicine_n and_o the_o right_a order_n of_o it_o all_o our_o confidence_n be_v in_o this_o medicine_n for_o this_o preserve_v both_o man_n and_o beast_n this_o preserve_v man_n however_o it_o find_v he_o young_a or_o old_a etc._n etc._n it_o will_v not_o suffer_v any_o superfluity_n or_o corruption_n to_o be_v in_o the_o body_n and_o it_o do_v so_o guard_v the_o body_n that_o no_o outward_a disease_n which_o come_v by_o witchcraft_n or_o from_o the_o influence_n of_o the_o star_n or_o the_o imagination_n of_o another_o can_v enter_v into_o the_o body_n neither_o will_v it_o suffer_v any_o tartar_n to_o stick_v to_o any_o part_n of_o the_o body_n or_o to_o stop_v any_o passage_n in_o the_o body_n and_o if_o there_o be_v any_o tartar_n any_o where_o it_o take_v it_o away_o but_o i_o must_v tell_v you_o that_o he_o who_o have_v but_o a_o vulgar_a understanding_n can_v understand_v these_o remedy_n of_o long_a life_n which_o i_o set_v down_o here_o they_o only_o can_v understand_v they_o who_o know_v the_o art_n or_o to_o who_o i_o declare_v my_o meaning_n this_o follow_a preservative_n medicine_n which_o i_o will_v now_o describe_v to_o you_o it_o be_v to_o be_v use_v thus_o take_v a_o dram_n of_o this_o medicine_n in_o a_o draught_n of_o good_a wine_n once_o a_o month_n if_o nature_n be_v not_o too_o much_o weaken_v by_o age_n but_o if_o nature_n be_v much_o decay_v you_o must_v take_v a_o dram_n of_o this_o medicine_n once_o a_o week_n and_o when_o a_o man_n come_v to_o fourscore_o year_n and_o ten_o or_o a_o hundred_o year_n of_o age_n than_o he_o must_v take_v a_o dram_n of_o this_o medicine_n every_o three_o day_n this_o be_v to_o be_v well_o remember_v that_o you_o must_v use_v more_o or_o less_o of_o this_o medicine_n according_o as_o you_o have_v more_o or_o less_o of_o the_o strength_n of_o nature_n for_o among_o those_o man_n who_o be_v come_v to_o the_o vigorous_a part_n of_o their_o age_n we_o see_v the_o strength_n of_o nature_n great_a in_o some_o then_o in_o other_o some_o of_o they_o more_o able_a than_o other_o to_o endure_v etc._n etc._n therefore_o this_o preservative_n medicine_n must_v be_v use_v according_o as_o i_o have_v say_v already_o nature_n be_v so_o weak_a in_o some_o that_o it_o can_v be_v preserve_v as_o those_o who_o bring_v this_o weakness_n with_o they_o from_o the_o womb_n in_o who_o the_o foundation_n of_o nature_n be_v never_o sound_n nor_o sure_a and_o therefore_o this_o preservative_n medicine_n can_v be_v so_o effectual_a to_o such_o as_o to_o those_o who_o have_v a_o firm_a foundation_n because_o of_o that_o defect_n which_o be_v in_o they_o which_o make_v they_o incapable_a of_o the_o benefit_n of_o this_o medicine_n as_o we_o see_v in_o stone_n and_o wood_n in_o take_v fire_n the_o stone_n can_v take_v fire_n so_o well_o as_o wood_n etc._n etc._n if_o a_o woman_n use_v this_o cordial_a preservative_n it_o will_v make_v her_o course_n continue_v with_o she_o even_o in_o old_a age_n yea_o and_o make_v her_o fit_a to_o conceive_v and_o bare_a child_n unless_o she_o be_v natural_o barren_a for_o their_o spirit_n of_o life_n be_v strengthen_v by_o this_o medicine_n drive_v out_o of_o their_o body_n whatsoever_o be_v contrary_a to_o it_o and_o make_v every_o thing_n in_o the_o body_n be_v as_o it_o shall_v be_v if_o a_o woman_n use_v this_o medicine_n when_o she_o be_v with_o child_n that_o child_n shall_v have_v thereby_o a_o very_a sound_n and_o good_a complexion_n see_v long_a life_n depend_v upon_o the_o spirit_n of_o life_n which_o preserve_v life_n and_o upon_o the_o humour_n of_o life_n whence_o arise_v the_o complexion_n and_o quality_n as_o several_a branch_n from_o one_o root_n therefore_o we_o have_v frame_v our_o preservative_n medicine_n according_a to_o this_o viz._n to_o rectify_v the_o spirit_n of_o life_n and_o the_o humour_n of_o life_n and_o so_o the_o mind_n be_v also_o defend_v from_o hose_n troubler_n of_o reason_n which_o arise_v from_o the_o complexion_n as_o sadness_n or_o exsessive_a joy_n etc._n etc._n we_o need_v not_o then_o use_v several_a remedy_n for_o several_a humour_n this_o one_o be_v sufficient_a to_o keep_v those_o humour_n from_o distemper_n or_o any_o unnatural_a alteration_n to_o keep_v the_o body_n sound_n and_o well_o and_o to_o keep_v the_o mind_n free_a from_o all_o disturbance_n i_o will_v now_o describe_v to_o you_o our_o preservative_n medicine_n for_o long_a life_n so_o often_o mention_v it_o consist_v of_o two_o part_n viz._n of_o simple_n and_o of_o arcana_fw-la or_o quintessence_n we_o will_v not_o have_v the_o simple_n and_o the_o quintessence_n to_o be_v use_v several_o but_o we_o join_v they_o together_o in_o one_o receipt_n for_o the_o simple_n have_v wonderful_a virtue_n yea_o almost_o equal_a to_o the_o quintessence_n in_o prolong_v of_o life_n there_o be_v some_o simples_n which_o can_v preserve_v the_o life_n forty_o year_n and_o some_o simple_n can_v preserve_v the_o life_n a_o hundred_o year_n as_o the_o leaf_n of_o hellebore_n which_o can_v preserve_v the_o life_n a_o hundred_o and_o twenty_o year_n i_o have_v declare_v the_o virtue_n of_o it_o in_o that_o book_n which_o i_o have_v write_v concern_v the_o nature_n of_o thing_n here_o i_o will_v not_o write_v much_o of_o it_o because_o of_o people_n unbelief_n for_o whatsoever_o be_v not_o ordinary_a it_o can_v hardly_o be_v believe_v likewise_o flower_n of_o secta_fw-la croa_n can_v preserve_v the_o life_n a_o hundred_o year_n there_o be_v many_o more_o no_o less_o admirable_a virtue_n in_o those_o herb_n which_o i_o will_v not_o mention_v in_o this_o place_n but_o the_o quintessence_n in_o our_o receipt_n have_v a_o great_a faculty_n in_o preserve_v than_o those_o herb_n for_o they_o can_v strengthen_v comfort_n and_o nourish_v the_o radical_a humour_n or_o the_o humour_n of_o life_n more_o than_o the_o herb_n even_o as_o flesh_n and_o herb_n do_v both_o nourish_v a_o man_n but_o not_o alike_o for_o the_o one_o yield_v more_o nourishment_n and_o strength_n than_o the_o other_o nature_n do_v more_o delight_n in_o it_o and_o receive_v it_o with_o great_a benefit_n now_o my_o preservative_n medicine_n or_o receipt_n of_o prolong_v life_n in_o man_n or_o woman_n for_o two_o or_o three_o age_n it_o be_v this_o viz._n take_v of_o the_o quintessence_n of_o gold_n and_o the_o quintessence_n of_o pearl_n of_o each_o half_n a_o ounce_n of_o the_o quintessence_n of_o saffron_n of_o the_o quintessence_n of_o celandine_n and_o of_o the_o quintessence_n of_o balm_n of_o each_o five_o dram_n of_o the_o leaf_n of_o the_o herb_n hellebore_n and_o of_o the_o flower_n of_o the_o herb_n secta_fw-la croa_n let_v they_o be_v mix_v together_o according_a to_o art_n then_o put_v they_o in_o a_o glass_n bottle_n for_o your_o use_n keep_v they_o close_o from_o the_o air_n chap._n vi_o how_o we_o be_v preserve_v from_o those_o disease_n which_o come_v from_o the_o star_n or_o from_o witchcraft_n or_o from_o imagination_n etc._n etc._n have_v in_o the_o former_a chapter_n desribe_v our_o preservative_n medicine_n which_o be_v for_o the_o preservation_n of_o our_o body_n and_o to_o preserve_v we_o from_o those_o disease_n whereof_o the_o body_n be_v the_o cause_n i_o will_v in_o this_o last_o chapter_n show_v you_o how_o to_o cure_v the_o disease_n of_o the_o mind_n viz._n those_o disease_n which_o proceed_v from_o the_o mind_n as_o also_o those_o disease_n whereby_o the_o mind_n itself_o be_v infect_v which_o be_v all_o comprehend_v under_o one_o of_o these_o five_o 1._o the_o disease_n which_o come_v from_o the_o influence_n of_o the_o star_n 2._o disease_n which_o be_v from_o witchcraft_n or_o enchantment_n 3_o disease_n effect_v by_o the_o power_n of_o imagination_n 4._o disease_n which_o be_v produce_v by_o our_o own_o thought_n 5._o disease_n which_o be_v cause_v by_o superstition_n and_o first_o to_o show_v you_o how_o those_o disease_n which_o come_v from_o the_o influence_n of_o the_o star_n be_v to_o be_v cure_v howbeit_o we_o can_v know_v the_o nature_n or_o cause_n or_o power_n of_o the_o star_n and_o therefore_o we_o can_v say_v any_o
