of_o death_n as_o it_o be_v certain_a in_o scripture_n that_o he_o can_v not_o be_v hold_v of_o the_o sorrow_n of_o death_n acts._n 2._o 24._o quest._n but_o what_o interest_n have_v christ_n the_o son_n of_o man_n or_o of_o the_o humane_a nature_n assume_v by_o christ_n consist_v with_o the_o majesty_n of_o the_o person_n of_o the_o son_n of_o god_n ans._n we_o must_v distinguish_v in_o christ_n these_o thing_n which_o be_v proper_a to_o either_o of_o the_o two_o nature_n from_o these_o thing_n which_o be_v ascribe_v to_o his_o person_n in_o respect_n of_o either_o of_o the_o nature_n or_o both_o the_o nature_n for_o infirmity_n physical_a suffering_n or_o mortality_n be_v proper_a to_o the_o humane_a nature_n the_o glory_n of_o power_n and_o grace_n and_o mercy_n and_o superexcellent_a majesty_n and_o such_o like_a be_v proper_a to_o the_o deity_n but_o the_o suffering_n of_o the_o humane_a nature_n be_v so_o far_o from_o diminish_v the_o glory_n of_o the_o divine_a just_a man_n inflict_v capital_a punishment_n on_o a_o condemn_a person_n put_v case_n his_o own_o child_n can_v well_o consist_v with_o fatherly_a affection_n towards_o the_o child_n suffer_v punishment_n therefore_o it_o be_v not_o to_o be_v doubt_v but_o these_o two_o can_v well_o consist_v in_o god_n in_o who_o affection_n do_v not_o war_v one_o with_o another_o nor_o sight_n with_o reason_n as_o it_o fall_v forth_o among_o man_n for_o the_o affection_n ascribe_v unto_o god_n be_v effect_n rather_o of_o his_o holy_a will_n towards_o we_o then_o proper_o call_v affection_n in_o he_o and_o these_o effect_n of_o god_n will_v about_o we_o do_v always_o tend_v to_o our_o good_a and_o blessedness_n at_o last_o however_o diverse_a one_o from_o another_o in_o themselves_o 9_o among_o the_o degree_n of_o the_o suffering_n of_o christ_n soul_n we_o may_v number_v not_o only_o the_o perturbation_n of_o his_o mind_n and_o thought_n but_o also_o the_o perturbation_n of_o his_o affection_n and_o especial_o his_o fear_n for_o his_o humane_a nature_n be_v like_a unto_o we_o in_o all_o thing_n except_o sin_n and_o be_v indeed_o fear_v when_o it_o see_v and_o feel_v the_o wrath_n of_o god_n lest_o it_o shall_v have_v be_v swallow_v up_o by_o it_o and_o of_o this_o fear_n the_o apostle_n heb._n 5._o 7._o bear_v witness_v say_v who_o in_o the_o day_n of_o his_o flesh_n when_o he_o have_v offer_v up_o prayer_n and_o supplication_n and_o strong_a cry_n and_o tear_n unto_o he_o that_o be_v able_a to_o save_v he_o from_o death_n and_o be_v hear_v in_o that_o he_o fear_v now_o albeit_o this_o seem_v the_o sad_a passage_n of_o all_o his_o suffering_n that_o he_o be_v fear_v for_o be_v swallow_v up_o yet_o this_o his_o fear_n be_v not_o to_o be_v wonder_v at_o nor_o be_v it_o inconsistent_a with_o his_o holiness_n for_o when_o christ_n assume_v our_o nature_n as_o have_v be_v say_v he_o assume_v also_o all_o the_o common_a and_o sinless_a infirmity_n passion_n and_o perturbation_n of_o our_o nature_n now_o it_o be_v kind_o that_o the_o creature_n at_o the_o sight_n of_o a_o angry_a god_n shall_v tremble_v for_o we_o read_v that_o the_o rock_n and_o mountain_n have_v tremble_v before_o god_n when_o he_o do_v let_v forth_o his_o terror_n and_o it_o be_v natural_a to_o man_n at_o the_o sight_n of_o a_o terrible_a object_n at_o the_o sight_n of_o a_o peril_n and_o evil_a come_n upon_o he_o but_o much_o more_o already_o come_v upon_o he_o especial_o if_o the_o evil_a and_o peril_n be_v above_o all_o his_o natural_a strength_n to_o tremble_v and_o fear_v the_o worst_a and_o this_o become_v holy_a nature_n very_o well_o to_o fear_v present_a death_n off-cutting_a perdition_n and_o swallow_v up_o in_o the_o danger_n when_o god_n appear_v angry_a and_o be_v haste_v to_o be_v avenge_v on_o sinner_n in_o the_o person_n of_o their_o surety_n what_o can_v the_o humane_a soul_n of_o christ_n gather_v from_o this_o terrible_a sight_n but_o that_o which_o sense_n and_o reason_n do_v teach_v in_o the_o mean_a time_n there_o be_v no_o place_n here_o for_o his_o doubt_v of_o the_o issue_n and_o his_o escape_v from_o be_v swallow_v up_o for_o natural_a fear_n of_o the_o manly_a nature_n arise_v from_o the_o infirmity_n of_o the_o creature_n differ_v very_o far_o from_o the_o fear_n arise_v from_o the_o infirmity_n of_o faith_n in_o god_n faithfulness_n and_o power_n and_o natural_a fear_n of_o the_o worst_a can_v very_o well_o stand_v with_o the_o strength_n of_o faith_n to_o overcome_v the_o natural_a fear_n for_o as_o the_o sensitive_a appetite_n may_v abhor_v a_o bitter_a cup_n of_o medicine_n and_o cause_v all_o the_o body_n tremble_v for_o fear_n to_o take_v it_o while_o in_o the_o mean_a time_n the_o man_n by_o reason_n be_v resolve_v to_o drink_v that_o bitter_a cup_n of_o medicine_n because_o he_o confident_o hope_v to_o help_v his_o health_n thereby_o so_o natural_a fear_n in_o christ_n to_o taste_v of_o the_o cup_n of_o wrath_n can_v very_o well_o consist_v with_o strong_a faith_n and_o assurance_n to_o be_v deliver_v therefrom_o for_o it_o be_v very_o suitable_a that_o faith_n shall_v as_o far_o overcome_v the_o natural_a apprehension_n of_o sense_n and_o reason_n natural_a as_o reason_n do_v overcome_v sense_n in_o drink_v a_o loathsome_a and_o bitter_a cup_n of_o medicine_n and_o to_o clear_v this_o yet_o further_o that_o extreme_a fear_n to_o be_v swallow_v up_o of_o wrath_n can_v well_o consist_v in_o christ_n with_o strong_a faith_n to_o overcome_v and_o bear_v out_o that_o terrible_a wrath_n let_v it_o be_v consider_v that_o as_o it_o be_v needful_a christ_n shall_v be_v subject_a to_o the_o infirmity_n of_o natural_a strength_n that_o he_o may_v suffer_v death_n so_o it_o be_v needful_a that_o he_o shall_v have_v strong_a faith_n to_o enable_v he_o to_o bear_v out_o in_o a_o holy_a way_n that_o which_o he_o behove_v to_o suffer_v for_o if_o on_o the_o one_o hand_n christ_n have_v not_o be_v weaken_v and_o empty_v of_o all_o humane_a strength_n in_o his_o flesh_n he_o can_v not_o have_v be_v humble_v enough_o for_o we_o he_o can_v not_o have_v suffer_v so_o much_o as_o justice_n do_v exact_a for_o satisfaction_n for_o we_o and_o on_o the_o other_o hand_n if_o he_o have_v not_o stand_v firm_a in_o faith_n and_o love_n towards_o god_n glory_n and_o our_o salvation_n he_o can_v not_o have_v satisfy_v justice_n nor_o be_v still_o the_o innocent_a and_o spotless_a lamb_n of_o god_n nor_o have_v perfect_v the_o expiatory_a sacrifice_n for_o we_o obj._n but_o be_v he_o not_o tempt_v to_o doubt_v by_o satan_n ans._n we_o grant_v that_o he_o be_v indeed_o tempt_v by_o satan_n to_o doubt_v yea_o we_o shall_v not_o stand_v to_o grant_v that_o he_o be_v tempt_v to_o desperation_n but_o we_o altogether_o deny_v that_o he_o be_v taint_v with_o sin_n by_o temptation_n in_o the_o least_o degree_n for_o the_o scripture_n say_v he_o be_v tempt_v in_o all_o thing_n like_v unto_o we_o but_o yet_o without_o sin_n in_o he_o or_o yield_v in_o any_o sort_n to_o any_o temptation_n and_o see_v by_o the_o evangelist_n matth._n 4._o we_o understand_v that_o he_o be_v tempt_v in_o the_o wilderness_n by_o the_o devil_n unto_o the_o most_o horrible_a sin_n that_o satan_n can_v devise_v and_o yet_o be_v not_o stain_v or_o pollute_v in_o the_o least_o degree_n with_o the_o least_o measure_n of_o yield_v to_o the_o sinful_a temptation_n we_o need_v not_o stand_v to_o grant_v that_o he_o may_v be_v tempt_v or_o that_o he_o be_v tempt_v unto_o doubt_v and_o desperation_n for_o this_o be_v among_o the_o most_o notable_a and_o prime_a temptation_n whereby_o satan_n in_o his_o impudent_a boldness_n solicit_v the_o son_n of_o god_n very_a god_n and_o man_n in_o one_o person_n even_o to_o doubt_v of_o that_o what_o satan_n know_v he_o be_v if_o thou_o be_v the_o son_n of_o god_n say_v he_o it_o be_v true_a indeed_o that_o we_o who_o be_v sinner_n by_o nature_n and_o corrupt_v in_o all_o the_o power_n of_o our_o soul_n can_v be_v tempt_v toss_v and_o trouble_v but_o therein_o our_o sinful_a nature_n in_o some_o measure_n may_v appear_v and_o be_v
