and_o sobriety_n of_o contempt_n of_o the_o world_n of_o valuation_n of_o eternity_n and_o provision_n for_o it_o be_v better_o learn_v in_o this_o extreme_a than_o in_o the_o other_o i_o shall_v of_o that_o learning_n wisdom_n piety_n and_o virtue_n which_o be_v very_o eminent_a and_o conspicuous_a in_o he_o particular_o that_o of_o the_o great_a audit_n which_o i_o use_v to_o look_v upon_o as_o his_o very_a picture_n wherein_o represent_v the_o good_a steward_n pass_v his_o account_n it_o be_v impossible_a for_o he_o not_o to_o give_v a_o lively_a representation_n of_o himself_o as_o great_a controversy_n especial_o among_o they_o of_o the_o reform_a religion_n and_o though_o these_o write_n never_o undergo_v the_o last_o hand_n or_o pencil_n of_o the_o judicious_a author_n and_o therefore_o in_o respect_n of_o that_o perfection_n which_o he_o can_v have_v give_v to_o they_o be_v not_o altogether_o so_o complete_a as_o otherwise_o they_o may_v have_v be_v yet_o if_o we_o consider_v they_o in_o themselves_o or_o with_o respect_n to_o the_o write_n which_o be_v daily_o publish_v even_o of_o learned_a man_n and_o publish_v by_o the_o author_n themselves_o these_o will_v great_a use_n and_o concernment_n be_v most_o common_a but_o the_o matter_n of_o his_o meditation_n upon_o these_o subject_n be_v not_o common_a for_o as_o he_o be_v a_o man_n that_o think_v close_o than_o have_v they_o be_v design_v to_o be_v publish_v and_o be_v publish_v by_o himself_o which_o perhaps_o may_v render_v they_o not_o less_o acceptable_a to_o some_o reader_n not_o of_o the_o low_a rank_n so_o that_o consider_v the_o write_n themselves_o i_o can_v not_o think_v that_o there_o be_v any_o thing_n therein_o whether_o of_o matter_n or_o form_n which_o can_v render_v the_o come_v to_o pass_v that_o as_o death_n itself_o be_v unwelcome_a when_o it_o draw_v near_o so_o the_o thought_n and_o apprehension_n of_o it_o become_v as_o unwelcome_a as_o the_o thing_n itself_o 2._o a_o vain_a foolish_a conceit_n that_o the_o consideration_n of_o the_o latter_a end_n be_v a_o kind_n of_o presage_n and_o invitation_n of_o it_o and_o upon_o this_o account_n i_o have_v know_v many_o superstitious_o and_o foolish_o to_o forbear_v the_o make_n of_o their_o will_n because_o it_o seem_v to_o they_o ominous_a and_o a_o presage_n of_o death_n whereas_o this_o consideration_n this_o be_v the_o way_n of_o mankind_n to_o put_v far_o from_o we_o the_o evil_a day_n and_o the_o thought_n of_o it_o but_o this_o our_o way_n be_v our_o folly_n and_o one_o of_o the_o great_a contenta_fw-la and_o whatsoever_o be_v redundant_fw-la most_o common_o turn_v to_o the_o damage_n and_o detriment_n of_o our_o nature_n unless_o it_o meet_v with_o a_o very_a wise_a proprietor_n for_o faith_n with_o other_o intricate_a and_o abstruse_a definition_n or_o description_n either_o render_v it_o very_o difficult_a and_o scarce_o intelligible_a or_o else_o take_v into_o the_o definition_n or_o description_n those_o thing_n that_o be_v but_o the_o consequent_n and_o effect_n of_o it_o he_o that_o have_v this_o firm_a persuasion_n will_v most_o certain_o repent_v of_o his_o sin_v pass_v will_v most_o certain_o endeavour_v obedience_n to_o the_o will_n of_o god_n which_o be_v thus_o believe_v by_o he_o to_o be_v holy_a just_a and_o good_a and_o upon_o the_o obedience_n or_o disobedience_n whereof_o depend_v his_o eternal_a happiness_n or_o misery_n will_v most_o certain_o depend_v upon_o the_o promise_n of_o god_n for_o this_o life_n and_o that_o to_o come_v for_o those_o be_v as_o natural_a effect_n of_o such_o a_o firm_a persuasion_n as_o it_o be_v for_o the_o belief_n of_o a_o danger_n to_o put_v a_o man_n upon_o mean_n to_o avoid_v it_o or_o for_o the_o belief_n of_o a_o benefit_n to_o put_v a_o man_n upon_o mean_n to_o attain_v it_o some_o thing_n be_v of_o such_o a_o nature_n that_o the_o belief_n or_o knowledge_n of_o they_o go_v no_o further_o but_o it_o rest_v in_o itself_o as_o the_o belief_n or_o knowledge_n of_o bare_a speculative_a truth_n but_o some_o thing_n be_v of_o such_o a_o nature_n as_o be_v once_o true_o and_o firm_o believe_v or_o know_v carry_v a_o man_n out_o to_o action_n and_o such_o be_v especial_o the_o knowledge_n or_o belief_n of_o such_o thing_n as_o be_v the_o object_n of_o our_o fear_n or_o of_o our_o hope_n the_o belief_n of_o such_o object_n do_v natural_o and_o with_o a_o kind_n of_o moral_a necessity_n carry_v a_o man_n out_o to_o action_n to_o the_o avoid_n of_o such_o fear_n and_o the_o attain_n of_o such_o hope_n and_o therefore_o faith_n and_o belief_n in_o reference_n thereunto_o come_v often_o in_o the_o scripture_n under_o the_o name_n of_o hope_n and_o fear_n as_o be_v the_o proper_a not_o faith_n nor_o assent_n if_o it_o have_v it_o but_o weak_o and_o imperfect_o it_o be_v evident_a that_o the_o assent_n be_v weak_a and_o fluctuate_a if_o it_o have_v that_o effect_n at_o some_o time_n but_o not_o at_o other_o it_o be_v evident_a that_o the_o assent_n be_v suspend_v or_o intermit_v or_o not_o actual_o exercise_v at_o these_o intermission_n if_o a_o man_n be_v real_o and_o full_o persuade_v that_o if_o he_o take_v such_o a_o journey_n to_o morrow_n he_o shall_v certain_o break_v his_o leg_n he_o will_v as_o certain_o not_o go_v or_o if_o he_o be_v under_o a_o certain_a persuasion_n that_o if_o he_o take_v such_o a_o drink_n he_o shall_v certain_o recover_v his_o lose_a health_n it_o be_v as_o certain_a he_o will_v drink_v it_o and_o if_o a_o man_n be_v actual_o and_o full_o persuade_v that_o if_o he_o use_v such_o a_o mean_n he_o shall_v attain_v everlasting_a happiness_n or_o if_o he_o shall_v commit_v such_o a_o sin_n he_o shall_v certain_o lose_v it_o it_o be_v scarce_o moral_o possible_a that_o a_o reasonable_a man_n in_o his_o wit_n will_v omit_v the_o one_o or_o commit_v the_o other_o and_o to_o say_v this_o be_v but_o a_o historical_a faith_n and_o that_o the_o devil_n have_v as_o much_o they_o believe_v and_o tremble_v and_o they_o do_v as_o full_o assent_v to_o divine_a truth_n as_o any_o can_v do_v yet_o it_o avail_v they_o not_o conclude_v nothing_o the_o reason_n be_v evident_a because_o the_o salvation_n to_o be_v attain_v the_o faith_n which_o be_v the_o instrument_n to_o attain_v it_o concern_v they_o not_o neither_o be_v attain_v it_o i'faith_o therefore_o be_v a_o firm_a assent_n to_o the_o sacred_a truth_n whether_o the_o truth_n relate_v to_o thing_n past_a as_o that_o god_n make_v the_o world_n that_o christ_n the_o messiah_n be_v come_v in_o the_o flesh_n &_o c._n or_o to_o thing_n present_a as_o that_o almighty_a god_n behold_v all_o i_o do_v and_o know_v all_o i_o think_v or_o that_o he_o be_v a_o reconcile_a father_n unto_o i_o in_o christ_n jesus_n or_o thing_n to_o come_v which_o principal_o excite_v those_o two_o great_a mover_n of_o the_o soul_n hope_n and_o fear_v the_o future_a life_n of_o reward_n and_o punishment_n v._o i_o come_v to_o the_o five_o thing_n viz._n how_o faith_n overcome_v the_o world_n which_o take_v in_o these_o two_o consideration_n 1._o how_o that_o be_v in_o what_o degree_n 2._o how_o that_o be_v by_o what_o method_n or_o mean_n touch_v the_o former_a of_o these_o touch_v the_o degree_n of_o the_o victory_n that_o faith_n give_v it_o be_v a_o victory_n but_o not_o a_o victory_n to_o utter_v extermination_n the_o captain_n of_o our_o salvation_n indeed_o overcome_v the_o world_n total_o perfect_o joh._n 16.33_o our_o victory_n be_v not_o complete_a nor_o perfect_a on_o this_o side_n death_n but_o it_o be_v such_o a_o victory_n as_o leaf_n still_o a_o adversary_n to_o contest_v with_o we_o though_o not_o to_o subdue_v and_o conquer_v we_o it_o which_o we_o set_v a_o esteem_n and_o value_n and_o love_n upon_o which_o deserve_v rather_o our_o hatred_n and_o detestation_n as_o our_o sin_n the_o irregulaâ—â—es_n of_o our_o lust_n and_o passion_n and_o those_o degenerate_a plant_n that_o arise_v from_o they_o as_o pride_n ambition_n revenge_n intemperance_n &_o c._n these_o we_o account_v our_o right_a hand_n and_o our_o right_a eye_n in_o our_o state_n of_o natural_a darkness_n faith_n rectify_v this_o mistake_n of_o our_o judgement_n by_o show_v we_o the_o law_n and_o will_n of_o god_n reveal_v by_o christ_n whereby_o we_o find_v that_o these_o be_v our_o disease_n distemper_n and_o sickness_n repugnant_a to_o the_o will_n image_n and_o command_n of_o god_n that_o they_o be_v our_o loss_n and_o our_o danger_n and_o our_o ruin_n and_o therefore_o not_o to_o be_v entertain_v but_o mortify_v and_o crucify_v 2._o some_o thing_n there_o be_v in_o the_o world_n that_o we_o may_v allow_v somewhat_o of_o our_o affection_n unto_o but_o we_o overvalue_v they_o we_o reckon_v wealth_n and_o honour_n and_o power_n the_o great_a happiness_n imaginable_a and_o therefore_o intense_o desire_v they_o sickness_n and_o affliction_n and_o injury_n and_o loss_n the_o great_a misery_n imaginable_a and_o therefore_o we_o fear_v they_o excessive_o we_o be_v intolerable_o discontent_v under_o they_o faith_n rectify_v our_o mistake_n herein_o give_v we_o a_o just_a value_n of_o these_o thing_n show_v we_o the_o law_n of_o god_n check_v and_o forbid_v immoderate_a affection_n or_o passion_n to_o be_v exercise_v about_o they_o assure_v we_o that_o we_o be_v as_o well_o under_o the_o view_n and_o observation_n as_o under_o the_o care_n and_o regiment_n of_o the_o great_a lord_n of_o heaven_n and_o earth_n and_o therefore_o expect_v our_o great_a moderation_n in_o relation_n to_o external_o 3._o and_o principal_o for_o the_o most_o part_n the_o child_n of_o man_n esteem_v this_o life_n the_o uttermost_a term_n or_o limit_v of_o their_o happiness_n or_o misery_n and_o therefore_o make_v it_o their_o whole_a business_n by_o all_o mean_v possible_a to_o make_v their_o life_n here_o as_o splendid_a and_o glorious_a as_o delightful_a and_o pleasurable_a as_o be_v possible_a and_o use_v all_o mean_n whether_o honest_a or_o dishonest_a fit_a or_o unfit_a to_o secure_v themselves_o in_o the_o good_a they_o have_v and_o to_o avoid_v any_o thing_n that_o be_v grievous_a or_o troublesome_a and_o if_o they_o can_v compass_v it_o they_o sink_v and_o despond_v and_o murmur_n and_o die_v under_o it_o as_o the_o only_a hell_n imaginable_a or_o if_o they_o have_v any_o thought_n of_o a_o future_a estate_n after_o death_n yet_o they_o be_v but_o languid_a faint_a and_o searce_v believe_v in_o any_o tolerable_a degree_n and_o suspect_v rather_o as_o the_o imposture_n of_o politician_n or_o fable_n of_o poet_n than_o have_v any_o real_a truth_n in_o they_o faith_n rectify_v this_o mistake_n and_o assure_v we_o there_o be_v a_o judgement_n to_o come_v a_o state_n of_o reward_n and_o punishment_n of_o a_o far_o high_a nature_n than_o this_o world_n can_v afford_v or_o indeed_o apprehend_v that_o the_o happiness_n of_o that_o life_n out-bids_a all_o the_o great_a and_o most_o glorious_a entertainment_n that_o this_o world_n can_v afford_v and_o will_v infinite_o exceed_v the_o great_a loss_n or_o cross_n that_o this_o world_n can_v yield_v and_o on_o the_o other_o side_n the_o punishment_n of_o that_o life_n will_v infinite_o overbalance_n all_o the_o pleasure_n and_o contentment_n that_o this_o life_n here_o can_v yield_v and_o the_o memory_n of_o they_o will_v but_o enhance_v the_o rate_n and_o degree_n of_o those_o torment_n and_o that_o according_o as_o man_n spend_v their_o life_n in_o this_o short_a transitory_a life_n either_o in_o obedience_n or_o disobedience_n unto_o the_o divine_a will_n according_o the_o retribution_n of_o everlasting_a reward_n and_o punishment_n will_v be_v there_o give_v this_o view_n of_o the_o future_a state_n present_v by_o faith_n to_o the_o soul_n will_v have_v
shall_v use_v his_o stewardship_n thereof_o sober_o faithful_o and_o obedient_o he_o shall_v enjoy_v that_o everlasting_a happiness_n that_o thus_o out-weigheth_a the_o best_a temporal_a felicity_n and_o on_o the_o other_o side_n if_o he_o shall_v use_v his_o prosperous_a condition_n vain_o proud_o insolent_o unfaithful_o intemperate_o this_o short_a felicity_n that_o he_o have_v here_o shall_v be_v attend_v with_o a_o endless_a and_o excessive_a misery_n unto_o all_o eternity_n and_o now_o thus_o upon_o these_o account_n and_o method_n faith_n overcome_v this_o world_n of_o external_a world_n herein_o disappoint_v the_o corruption_n of_o the_o heart_n the_o subtlety_n of_o the_o devil_n the_o temptation_n of_o evil_a man_n and_o bring_v the_o man_n into_o a_o low_a esteem_n of_o his_o own_o external_a happiness_n keep_v he_o in_o a_o high_a and_o just_a valuation_n of_o heaven_n keep_v he_o temperate_a sober_a watchful_a humble_a faithful_a just_a make_v he_o mindful_a of_o his_o account_n and_o studious_a and_o industrious_a for_o the_o attain_n and_o secure_v of_o a_o everlasting_a state_n of_o happiness_n and_o that_o when_o death_n shall_v render_v all_o his_o wealth_n and_o honour_n and_o applause_n and_o success_n and_o glory_n to_o be_v poor_a empty_a insipid_a thing_n yet_o he_o may_v have_v and_o enjoy_v a_o fix_v permanent_a everlasting_a state_n of_o of_o pride_n that_o be_v its_o opposite_a vice_n in_o the_o examination_n of_o the_o true_a nature_n of_o humility_n we_o must_v take_v notice_n that_o there_o be_v two_o extreme_n and_o between_o these_o the_o virtue_n of_o humility_n be_v place_v the_o two_o extreme_n be_v in_o the_o excess_n which_o be_v pride_n and_o in_o the_o defect_n baseness_n of_o mind_n pride_n arise_v from_o a_o overvaluation_n of_o a_o man_n self_n or_o a_o want_n of_o a_o due_a sense_n of_o his_o dependency_n upon_o almighty_a god_n and_o though_o all_o pride_n be_v a_o extreme_a foolish_a distemper_n of_o the_o mind_n yet_o some_o kind_n of_o pride_n be_v far_o more_o unreasonable_a and_o vain_a than_o other_o namely_o that_o kind_n of_o pride_n that_o arise_v upon_o such_o object_n that_o be_v less_o valuable_a in_o themselves_o or_o less_o his_o own_o that_o grow_v proud_a of_o they_o it_o be_v a_o foolish_a thing_n for_o a_o man_n to_o be_v proud_a of_o the_o endowment_n of_o his_o mind_n as_o wit_n memory_n judgement_n prudence_n policy_n learning_n nay_o of_o a_o man_n goodness_n virtue_n justice_n temperance_n integrity_n for_o though_o these_o be_v most_o a_o man_n be_v own_o yet_o he_o have_v they_o by_o the_o bounty_n and_o goodness_n of_o that_o god_n to_o who_o he_o owe_v his_o be_v what_o have_v thou_o which_o thou_o have_v not_o receive_v these_o be_v matter_n indeed_o to_o that_o taint_v and_o wither_v these_o excellency_n and_o render_v they_o either_o contemptible_a or_o at_o least_o much_o less_o valuable_a the_o more_o a_o man_n value_v himself_o for_o those_o thing_n the_o less_o he_o be_v value_v by_o other_o and_o it_o be_v a_o thousand_o to_o one_o that_o this_o foolish_a vain_a humour_n of_o pride_n mingle_v some_o odd_a faneiful_a ridiculous_a or_o unsavoury_a ingredient_n in_o the_o action_n or_o deportment_n of_o such_o man_n though_o of_o eminent_a part_n and_o ability_n that_o they_o receive_v more_o reproach_n or_o censure_v by_o their_o pride_n than_o they_o receive_v applause_n by_o their_o part_n for_o as_o god_n resist_v the_o proud_a so_o do_v mankind_n also_o and_o their_o very_a pride_n give_v their_o adversary_n advantage_n and_o as_o pride_n of_o part_n and_o habit_n of_o the_o mind_n be_v a_o foolish_a thing_n so_o pride_n of_o bodily_a endowment_n be_v yet_o more_o foolish_a and_o vain_a because_o it_o be_v raise_v upon_o a_o thing_n of_o a_o base_a allay_n than_o the_o former_a such_o as_o be_v beauty_n stature_n strength_n agility_n for_o though_o these_o be_v a_o man_n be_v own_o yet_o they_o be_v thing_n that_o be_v not_o only_o subject_a to_o more_o casualty_n than_o the_o former_a but_o they_o be_v but_o of_o a_o inferior_a nature_n again_o yet_o more_o vain_a and_o foolish_a be_v that_o pride_n adulation_n of_o they_o impatience_n of_o control_n or_o contradiction_n or_o disappointment_n of_o what_o they_o affect_v detraction_n from_o the_o worth_n or_o value_n of_o other_o and_o beside_o the_o disturbance_n that_o it_o make_v abroad_o it_o be_v a_o untollerable_a disease_n in_o the_o soul_n that_o be_v possess_v therewith_o render_v his_o life_n miserable_a and_o put_v he_o in_o the_o power_n of_o every_o man_n to_o be_v his_o tormentor_n if_o a_o poor_a man_n a_o mordecai_n deny_v but_o his_o cap_n or_o his_o knee_n it_o make_v haman_n stark_o sick_a and_o half_a mad_a hest_n vainglory_n be_v not_o sin_n the_o law_n of_o god_n and_o the_o law_n of_o nature_n tell_v we_o they_o be_v sin_n but_o a_o humble_a man_n sensible_a of_o his_o own_o sin_n and_o fail_n will_v not_o whether_o minister_n or_o magistrate_n the_o former_a namely_o a_o private_a person_n humility_n must_v teach_v he_o compassion_n charitableness_n gentleness_n but_o the_o latter_a be_v entrust_v in_o a_o public_a ministration_n or_o office_n do_v alternis_fw-la vicibus_fw-la agere_fw-la his_o personal_a humility_n as_o a_o private_a person_n must_v teach_v he_o to_o be_v charitable_a but_o yet_o not_o to_o be_v remiss_a or_o unfaithful_a in_o the_o exercise_n of_o his_o office_n the_o far_a consideration_n of_o the_o principle_n and_o companion_n of_o humility_n will_v appear_v in_o the_o consideration_n of_o the_o fruit_n and_o advantage_n and_o benefit_n of_o true_a humility_n and_o these_o i_o shall_v reduce_v to_o these_o three_o relation_n i._o in_o relation_n to_o almighty_a god_n 3._o in_o relation_n to_o the_o humble_a person_n himself_o 3._o in_o relation_n to_o other_o it_o be_v true_a that_o all_o virtue_n if_o they_o be_v true_a and_o real_a have_v a_o connexion_n one_o with_o another_o they_o be_v never_o single_a for_o the_o same_o principle_n that_o beget_v one_o beget_v all_o the_o rest_n and_o habituate_v and_o influence_v the_o soul_n in_o all_o its_o motion_n but_o especial_o this_o virtue_n of_o humility_n when_o it_o be_v genuine_a and_o true_a be_v ever_o accompany_v with_o all_o those_o excellent_a habit_n and_o grace_n that_o perfect_a the_o soul_n as_o the_o fear_n and_o love_n of_o god_n obedience_n to_o he_o dependence_n on_o he_o beneficence_n and_o charity_n to_o mankind_n and_o the_o like_a but_o yet_o in_o pursuit_n of_o the_o fruit_n and_o advantage_n of_o humility_n i_o shall_v apply_v myself_o to_o such_o as_o do_v most_o natural_o and_o with_o a_o kind_n of_o special_a reason_n and_o appropriation_n belong_v to_o or_o flow_v from_o this_o virtue_n as_o such_o and_o as_o do_v belong_v to_o its_o nature_n in_o a_o kind_n of_o abstract_n consideration_n first_o therefore_o in_o relation_n to_o almighty_a god_n the_o humble_a man_n have_v in_o a_o special_a manner_n these_o two_o great_a advantage_n 1._o he_o receive_v grace_n or_o favour_n or_o honour_n from_o god_n 2._o he_o receive_v direction_n guidance_n and_o counsel_n from_o god_n both_o which_o be_v singular_o promise_v and_o by_o a_o kind_n of_o suitableness_n and_o congruity_n confer_v by_o almighty_a god_n upon_o his_o humble_a soul_n first_o favour_n honour_n and_o grace_n from_o god_n be_v a_o special_a portion_n of_o the_o humble_a man._n the_o wise_a man_n tell_v we_o here_o he_o gives_z grace_n to_o the_o humble_a and_o although_o grace_n be_v a_o comprehensive_a word_n and_o include_v in_o itself_o not_o only_a favour_n and_o acceptance_n with_o god_n but_o also_o those_o other_o accession_n of_o the_o gift_n of_o his_o bounty_n and_o goodness_n which_o come_v from_o this_o great_a giver_n of_o every_o perfect_a gift_n as_o wisdom_n peace_n righteousness_n purity_n of_o heart_n and_o the_o like_a which_o be_v all_o also_o the_o portion_n of_o a_o true_o humble_a man_n yet_o i_o think_v the_o former_a be_v that_o which_o be_v special_o intend_v here_o namely_o favour_n honour_n and_o acceptance_n with_o god_n have_v attain_v some_o little_a unprofitable_a respect_n from_o a_o great_a man_n but_o what_o be_v that_o in_o comparison_n of_o be_v in_o grace_n and_o favour_n with_o the_o king_n of_o king_n the_o lord_n of_o heaven_n especial_o when_o we_o consider_v that_o the_o favour_n or_o acceptance_n of_o the_o glorious_a god_n be_v not_o a_o bare_a unprofitable_a esteem_n or_o grace_n such_o as_o many_o time_n the_o great_a favourite_n of_o prince_n obtain_v from_o they_o but_o the_o favour_n and_o acceptance_n of_o god_n be_v always_o accompany_v with_o bounty_n and_o beneficence_n as_o he_o be_v the_o sovereign_a ocean_n of_o all_o good_a so_o we_o may_v be_v sure_a he_o will_v be_v communicative_a and_o liberal_a of_o it_o to_o such_o as_o he_o favour_v he_o who_o benignity_n be_v hourly_o extend_v to_o the_o mean_a of_o his_o creature_n nay_o to_o the_o very_o worst_a of_o man_n can_v be_v parsimonious_a or_o strait-handed_n to_o those_o who_o he_o accept_v and_o esteem_v and_o honour_n so_o that_o the_o humble_a man_n find_v grace_n in_o the_o sight_n of_o the_o glorious_a god_n and_o as_o a_o effect_n of_o that_o grace_n the_o bountiful_a communication_n of_o all_o necessary_n good_a from_o the_o munificence_n bounty_n and_o liberality_n of_o he_o that_o thus_o favour_v he_o and_o this_o be_v reward_n enough_o for_o the_o most_o profound_a humility_n the_o reason_n why_o almighty_a god_n accept_v thus_o a_o humble_a person_n be_v the_o very_a same_o that_o make_v he_o resist_v the_o proud_a which_o be_v this_o the_o great_a god_n make_v all_o thing_n in_o the_o world_n for_o two_o end_n viz._n 1._o thereby_o to_o communicate_v his_o own_o diffusive_a goodness_n and_o beneficence_n and_o principal_o for_o the_o glory_n of_o his_o own_o greatness_n wisdom_n power_n and_o majesty_n and_o although_o he_o receive_v no_o addition_n of_o happiness_n by_o the_o return_n of_o glory_n from_o his_o creature_n yet_o it_o be_v a_o thing_n he_o value_v his_o glory_n he_o will_v not_o give_v to_o another_o and_o it_o be_v unbecoming_a the_o excellency_n of_o his_o majesty_n to_o be_v disappoint_v in_o his_o end_n glory_n be_v out_o of_o its_o place_n when_o it_o be_v not_o return_v to_o the_o god_n of_o glory_n or_o in_o order_n to_o he_o it_o be_v the_o natural_a as_o well_o as_o the_o reasonable_a tribute_n of_o all_o his_o creature_n and_o a_o kind_n of_o proper_a refiection_n of_o the_o bounty_n and_o splendour_n of_o all_o his_o work_n unto_o the_o god_n that_o make_v they_o now_o the_o proud_a man_n usurp_v that_o glory_n which_o be_v due_a to_o his_o maker_n and_o take_v it_o to_o himself_o intercept_v that_o due_a and_o natural_a return_n and_o reflection_n due_a unto_o the_o creator_n of_o all_o thing_n take_v that_o tribute_n that_o be_v due_a to_o god_n and_o apply_v it_o to_o himself_o put_v glory_n out_o of_o its_o place_n and_o natural_a course_n which_o it_o shall_v hold_v towards_o the_o glorious_a god_n as_o the_o river_n do_v to_o the_o sea_n and_o this_o usurpation_n as_o it_o be_v a_o kind_n of_o rebellion_n against_o god_n so_o it_o invert_v and_o disorder_v the_o true_a and_o just_a natural_a course_n of_o thing_n and_o therefore_o as_o the_o proud_a man_n herein_o walk_v contrary_a to_o god_n so_o god_n walk_v contrary_a to_o he_o they_o that_o honour_v i_o i_o will_v honour_v they_o that_o despise_v i_o shall_v be_v light_o esteem_v 1_o sam._n 2.30_o and_o as_o this_o be_v a_o most_o reasonable_a act_n of_o divine_a justice_n so_o they_o seem_v two_o thing_n that_o even_o upon_o a_o account_n much_o humility_n and_o bear_v it_o with_o so_o much_o patience_n and_o thereby_o pride_n and_o oppression_n become_v the_o common_a object_n of_o the_o general_a detestation_n of_o insolence_n pride_n and_o oppression_n and_o the_o generality_n of_o mankind_n thereupon_o look_v on_o they_o as_o beast_n of_o prey_n with_o hatred_n and_o abhorrence_n and_o endeavour_n mean_v to_o secure_v themselves_o against_o it_o 3._o a_o three_o advantage_n be_v this_o that_o though_o oftentimes_o humble_a and_o good_a man_n be_v expose_v to_o the_o injury_n of_o the_o proud_a violent_a and_o insolent_a yet_o they_o be_v a_o kind_n of_o ferment_n or_o leaven_n in_o the_o place_n where_o they_o live_v and_o by_o the_o secret_a influence_n of_o their_o virtue_n the_o commendableness_n of_o their_o conversation_n and_o the_o secret_a interest_n that_o virtue_n have_v in_o the_o soul_n not_o only_o of_o good_a but_o even_o of_o the_o worst_a man_n it_o do_v work_v upon_o mankind_n assimilate_v in_o some_o measure_n to_o itself_o and_o make_v other_o good_a and_o humble_a by_o a_o kind_n of_o secret_a magnetism_n that_o that_o virtue_n have_v upon_o the_o mind_n of_o man_n and_o the_o more_o such_o be_v in_o number_n in_o the_o world_n the_o more_o effectual_a and_o operative_a their_o example_n and_o influence_n will_v be_v upon_o those_o with_o who_o they_o converse_v 2._o yea_o and_o we_o shall_v by_o daily_a experience_n see_v in_o the_o world_n that_o if_o a_o proud_a man_n injure_v or_o oppress_v a_o humble_a man_n it_o be_v a_o thousand_o to_o one_o he_o
