christ_n righteousness_n put_v on_o that_o garment_n of_o he_o and_o as_o a_o instrument_n receive_v and_o hold_v and_o bring_v to_o the_o soul_n that_o precious_a blood_n of_o christ_n which_o only_o can_v immediate_o satisfy_v god_n and_o appease_v a_o thirsty_a conscience_n 2._o again_o we_o must_v distinguish_v of_o the_o manner_n and_o peculiar_a habitude_n or_o respect_n of_o thing_n unto_o salvation_n some_o thing_n thing_n a_o twofold_a reference_n of_o thing_n have_v a_o reference_n to_o salvation_n by_o way_n of_o proper_a causality_n which_o have_v in_o they_o a_o meritorious_a reason_n for_o the_o proper_a dignity_n of_o which_o a_o person_n be_v justify_v and_o save_v and_o in_o this_o respect_n we_o say_v that_o believe_v in_o jesus_n christ_n be_v the_o only_a method_n and_o way_n of_o salvation_n not_o that_o faith_n can_v from_o its_o own_o worth_a dispute_n and_o challenge_v from_o god_n but_o because_o jesus_n christ_n who_o be_v the_o object_n of_o faith_n have_v as_o a_o cause_n merit_v our_o pardon_n justification_n and_o salvation_n other_o thing_n have_v a_o reference_n by_o way_n of_o order_n as_o suppose_v a_o man_n be_v to_o be_v knight_v by_o the_o king_n to_o obtain_v this_o knighthood_n he_o must_v come_v to_o the_o court_n and_o stoop_v down_o on_o his_o knee_n and_o so_o receive_v that_o honour_n this_o access_n to_o the_o court_n and_o humble_v on_o his_o knee_n be_v not_o a_o matter_n of_o merit_n or_o cause_n but_o only_o of_o order_n and_o condition_n in_o this_o latter_a respect_n we_o deny_v not_o but_o good_a work_n look_v towards_o sâ—lvation_n and_o be_v require_v thereto_o not_o as_o any_o cause_n christ_n only_a be_v the_o cause_n but_o as_o condition_n and_o orderly_a step_n and_o way_n which_o we_o must_v tread_v if_o we_o will_v be_v save_v via_fw-la ad_fw-la regnum_fw-la non_fw-la causa_fw-la regnandi_fw-la bernard_n bernard_n when_o we_o say_v that_o believe_v in_o christ_n jesus_n be_v the_o only_a way_n to_o be_v save_v you_o must_v not_o understand_v it_o so_o as_o if_o no_o other_o grace_n be_v require_v from_o a_o man_n but_o faith_n only_o but_o thus_o there_o be_v no_o other_o grace_n which_o lay_v hold_v on_o christ_n who_o be_v the_o cause_n of_o salvation_n but_o faith_n only_o as_o it_o be_v with_o the_o father_n of_o the_o prodigal_n when_o he_o meet_v his_o son_n fall_v down_o on_o his_o knee_n he_o present_o forgive_v he_o but_o before_o he_o bring_v he_o into_o his_o house_n he_o do_v clothe_v he_o with_o other_o garment_n so_o do_v god_n our_o father_n upon_o our_o humble_v and_o believe_v free_o confer_v on_o we_o remission_n of_o sin_n for_o his_o christ_n sake_n yet_o before_o he_o bring_v we_o to_o heaven_n he_o do_v invest_v our_o soul_n with_o the_o singular_a grace_n of_o his_o holy_a spirit_n yea_o though_o justification_n be_v not_o sanctification_n yet_o where_o god_n do_v the_o one_o he_o ever_o bestow_v and_o work_v the_o other_o therefore_o i_o pray_v you_o remember_v to_o distinguish_v betwixt_o these_o two_o justification_n and_o sanctification_n the_o person_n justify_v and_o to_o be_v save_v though_o this_o be_v most_o heart_n as_o well_o as_o a_o good_a christ_n and_o a_o holy_a life_n as_o well_o as_o a_o precious_a faith_n or_o else_o thou_o shall_v never_o come_v to_o heaven_n you_o know_v that_o in_o the_o body_n of_o man_n there_o be_v eye_n to_o see_v and_o ear_n to_o hear_v and_o hand_n to_o take_v and_o foot_n to_o go_v of_o all_o these_o which_o be_v in_o the_o body_n yet_o no_o member_n be_v depute_v to_o see_v but_o the_o eye_n nevertheless_o the_o eye_n must_v not_o say_v of_o the_o ear_n i_o have_v no_o need_n of_o thou_o nor_o the_o hand_n to_o the_o foot_n i_o have_v no_o need_n of_o thou_o it_o be_v grant_v that_o no_o member_n see_v but_o the_o eye_n eat_v but_o the_o mouth_n walk_v but_o the_o foot_n lay_n hold_v on_o but_o the_o hand_n their_o office_n be_v singular_a yet_o their_o con-corporation_n be_v necessary_a so_o no_o grace_n but_o faith_n pitch_v on_o christ_n lay_v hold_v on_o he_o as_o the_o cause_n of_o salvation_n yet_o there_o be_v need_n of_o other_o grace_n in_o the_o person_n to_o be_v save_v there_o must_v be_v love_n and_o repentance_n and_o godly_a sorrow_n and_o true_a fear_n and_o lively_a hope_n and_o patience_n and_o zeal_n etc._n etc._n the_o estate_n be_v change_v only_o by_o the_o blood_n of_o christ_n but_o if_o we_o will_v be_v save_v the_o person_n must_v also_o be_v change_v by_o the_o spirit_n of_o christ._n sect_n i._o and_o disapprove_v it_o or_o whether_o thou_o conjecture_v though_o not_o right_o its_o strength_n to_o consist_v in_o mere_a inclination_n why_o why_o unbelief_n will_v never_o alter_v they_o or_o whether_o thou_o think_v its_o strength_n consist_v in_o frequency_n of_o action_n or_o motion_n why_o unbelief_n will_v never_o remove_v or_o lessen_v they_o or_o whether_o thou_o think_v its_o strength_n consist_v in_o command_n and_o power_n why_o unbelief_n will_v never_o conquer_v they_o unbelief_n be_v a_o sin_n itself_o and_o therefore_o can_v be_v no_o cure_n of_o sin_n for_o of_o thou_o but_o christ_n his_o wing_n be_v heal_v and_o to_o he_o be_v thou_o appoint_v to_o come_v as_o the_o sick_a person_n to_o the_o priest_n in_o the_o levitical_a law_n the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n you_o know_v be_v a_o undertake_n not_o only_o for_o pardon_n but_o for_o change_v and_o all_o the_o covenant_n be_v make_v good_a in_o christ_n as_o if_o god_n shall_v say_v unto_o a_o sinner_n i_o know_v thou_o be_v a_o guilty_a person_n ful-well_a and_o beside_o that_o thou_o have_v a_o filthy_a and_o abominable_a nature_n but_o go_v to_o my_o son_n accept_v of_o he_o there_o be_v the_o understanding_n by_o solid_a demonstration_n of_o infallible_a principle_n or_o else_o by_o the_o undeniable_a evidence_n of_o sense_n and_o experience_n as_o thus_o that_o every_o natural_a body_n have_v power_n to_o move_v or_o that_o the_o moon_n will_v suffer_v a_o eclipse_n or_o that_o the_o fire_n be_v natural_o apt_a to_o ascend_v and_o the_o water_n to_o moisten_v etc._n etc._n these_o thing_n have_v both_o a_o natural_a certainty_n and_o truth_n in_o themselves_o and_o there_o be_v a_o undoubted_a evidence_n and_o certainty_n in_o the_o mind_n of_o the_o person_n true_o know_v they_o and_o so_o certain_a and_o full_o be_v the_o persuasion_n of_o the_o mind_n about_o they_o that_o there_o be_v no_o scruple_n of_o doubt_n remain_v to_o discuss_v as_o any_o uncertainty_n whether_o the_o thing_n be_v so_o or_o no._n another_o be_v opinion_n which_o be_v a_o inevident_a evident_a assent_n if_o i_o may_v so_o phrase_n it_o my_o meaning_n be_v the_o understanding_n do_v so_o assent_v and_o yield_v to_o the_o thing_n as_o that_o yet_o it_o see_v some_o contrary_a reason_n to_o suspect_v and_o question_n whether_o the_o thing_n be_v so_o or_o no_o for_o as_o much_o as_o in_o opinion_n the_o ground_n be_v not_o full_o evident_a to_o the_o mind_n but_o they_o be_v only_o probable_a and_o therefore_o the_o assent_n by_o opinion_n be_v but_o conjectural_a as_o take_v a_o man_n in_o a_o case_n of_o a_o scrupulous_a conscience_n there_o be_v to_o that_o man_n some_o evidence_n of_o argument_n which_o do_v seem_v to_o warrant_v his_o action_n or_o attempt_n and_o yet_o that_o argument_n be_v not_o so_o entire_o convince_a of_o his_o judgement_n but_o on_o the_o other_o side_n there_o start_v up_o a_o medium_n or_o argument_n and_o saviour_n yet_o i_o believe_v it_o to_o be_v true_a because_o god_n have_v give_v testimony_n or_o report_n thereof_o in_o his_o word_n unto_o i_o again_o belief_n differ_v from_o opinion_n in_o this_o that_o opinion_n be_v a_o indifferent_a probable_a hazard_v and_o difficult_o inclinable_a assent_n but_o in_o believe_v the_o assent_n be_v firm_a certain_a and_o fix_v especial_o where_o testimony_n and_o authority_n be_v sufficient_a believe_v as_o it_o be_v restrain_v to_o a_o theological_a and_o divine_a consideration_n that_o be_v in_o the_o general_a a_o assent_n of_o the_o infallible_o conclude_v justify_v and_o save_v faith_n for_o as_o much_o as_o the_o devil_n and_o hypocrite_n may_v see_v much_o of_o christ_n they_o may_v have_v a_o high_a degree_n of_o intellectual_a apprehension_n again_o a_o man_n can_v by_o faith_n take_v christ_n to_o be_v his_o lord_n and_o saviour_n unless_o he_o have_v some_o sensibleness_n of_o his_o sinful_a condition_n
