nail_n and_o that_o which_o be_v not_o handsome_a plain_o to_o mention_v but_o christ_n say_v it_o go_v to_o the_o draught_n so_o the_o body_n of_o sin_n be_v still_o breed_v that_o which_o be_v filth_n in_o the_o sight_n of_o god_n and_o the_o eye_n of_o a_o enlighten_v conscience_n it_o be_v still_o send_v forth_o divers_a excrement_n whereto_o the_o apostle_n james_n may_v have_v respect_n according_a to_o the_o strength_n or_o weakness_n of_o corruption_n so_o the_o soul_n act_v less_o or_o more_o sinful_o and_o it_o be_v mighty_o hinder_v in_o act_v according_a to_o its_o own_o nature_n as_o a_o spirit_n thereby_o but_o not_o to_o carry_v this_o too_o far_o last_o as_o the_o body_n be_v still_o crave_v one_o thing_n or_o other_o meat_n drink_z sleep_n clothes_n the_o cool_a what_o be_v the_o deed_n of_o the_o body_n of_o corruption_n they_o be_v deed_n agreeable_a to_o it_o corrupt_a deed_n such_o as_o covet_v lie_v boast_a vain_a glory_v murmur_a dissemble_a with_o those_o many_o other_o of_o that_o evil_a kind_n that_o curse_a generation_n the_o deed_n of_o the_o body_n be_v the_o fruit_n and_o birth_n of_o it_o which_o be_v sometime_o call_v the_o work_n of_o the_o flesh_n as_o in_o that_o gal._n 5.19_o sometime_o the_o member_n of_o the_o flesh_n or_o our_o member_n which_o be_v upon_o the_o earth_n col._n 3.5_o mortify_v therefore_o your_o member_n which_o be_v upon_o the_o earth_n uncleanness_n inordinate_a affection_n evil_a concupiscence_n and_o covetousness_n which_o be_v idolatry_n these_o be_v the_o deed_n of_o the_o body_n or_o the_o ought_v not_o to_o be_v make_v light_n but_o our_o heart_n shall_v mourn_v be_v ashamed_a humble_v and_o break_v for_o they_o as_o well_o as_o for_o outward_a sin_n some_o one_o may_v here_o ask_v why_o say_v our_o apostle_n if_o you_o mortify_v the_o deed_n of_o the_o body_n why_o say_v he_o not_o if_o you_o mortify_v the_o body_n it_o may_v be_v think_v he_o shall_v rather_o have_v speak_v of_o mortify_v the_o body_n of_o corruption_n itself_o than_o the_o deed_n of_o it_o i_o answer_v 1._o the_o apostle_n may_v thus_o express_v himself_o because_o the_o deed_n of_o corrupt_a nature_n be_v do_v four_o why_o be_v this_o a_o necessary_a duty_n five_o why_o be_v it_o a_o constant_a duty_n q._n 1._o what_o be_v mean_v by_o the_o body_n and_o why_o be_v it_o so_o call_v a._n body_n here_o signifi_v the_o same_o thing_n with_o flesh_n in_o the_o forego_n part_n of_o the_o text_n corrupt_a nature_n or_o the_o corruption_n of_o nature_n natural_a corruption_n that_o sin_n we_o all_o bring_v into_o the_o world_n with_o we_o in_o we_o which_o be_v call_v the_o body_n of_o the_o sin_n of_o the_o flesh_n col._n 2.11_o in_o who_o also_o you_o be_v circumcise_v with_o the_o circumcision_n make_v without_o hand_n in_o put_v off_o the_o body_n of_o the_o sin_n of_o the_o flesh_n and_o this_o be_v that_o which_o be_v term_v the_o body_n of_o sin_n rom._n 6.6_o know_v this_o that_o our_o old_a man_n be_v crucify_v with_o he_o that_o the_o body_n of_o sin_n may_v be_v destroy_v where_o by_o our_o old_a man_n and_o the_o body_n of_o sin_n the_o same_o thing_n be_v all_o member_n have_v not_o the_o same_o office_n so_o be_v the_o mystical_a body_n of_o christ_n his_o church_n and_o thus_o be_v it_o with_o the_o body_n of_o sin_n it_o have_v divers_a part_n and_o member_n and_o therefore_o may_v be_v call_v in_o that_o place_n to_o the_o colossian_n even_o now_o cite_v the_o body_n of_o the_o sin_n of_o the_o flesh_n there_o be_v pride_n hatred_n hypocrisy_n corrupt_a nature_n and_o each_o of_o they_o differ_v in_o the_o proper_a nature_n thereof_o and_o in_o its_o work_n or_o act_v as_o the_o hand_n be_v one_o thing_n and_o act_n in_o one_o manner_n the_o foot_n another_o thing_n and_o act_n in_o another_o manner_n the_o eye_n differ_v from_o the_o ear_n and_o the_o ear_n from_o the_o eye_n so_o be_v it_o with_o the_o several_a part_n of_o corrupt_a nature_n and_o it_o may_v be_v observe_v as_o some_o part_n of_o the_o body_n be_v inward_a not_o ordinary_o see_v or_o easy_a to_o be_v see_v other_o be_v outward_a without_o and_o manifest_a to_o all_o so_o some_o lust_n be_v more_o secret_a and_o not_o so_o common_o or_o easy_o perceive_v as_o other_o be_v which_o daily_o show_v themselves_o as_o also_o the_o be_v and_o subsistence_n or_o life_n of_o the_o body_n lie_v chief_o in_o those_o part_n that_o be_v within_o as_o the_o heart_n liver_n lung_n which_o be_v more_o necessary_a to_o the_o body_n its_o subsist_v than_o the_o outward_a part_n as_o hand_n leg_n so_o the_o body_n of_o sin_n have_v its_o be_v principal_o in_o those_o sin_n that_o be_v more_o secret_a less_o obvious_a such_o as_o hypocrifie_n unbelief_n formality_n covetousness_n vanity_n of_o mind_n these_o be_v as_o the_o heart_n liver_n and_o lung_n of_o the_o body_n of_o sin_n it_o will_v no_o long_o subsist_v be_v there_o nothing_o of_o such_o sin_n within_o we_o whereas_o the_o body_n of_o sin_n may_v and_o oft_o do_v continue_v and_o that_o strong_a and_o lusty_a without_o some_o outward_a more_o manifest_a sin_n such_o as_o drunkenness_n adultery_n swear_v and_o such_o like_a moreover_o a_o man_n have_v all_o the_o member_n of_o his_o body_n from_o the_o womb_n though_o he_o do_v not_o use_v some_o of_o they_o so_o nature_n may_v be_v call_v flesh_n for_o divers_a reason_n such_o as_o these_o 1._o because_o it_o be_v derive_v to_o we_o with_o our_o flesh_n our_o body_n from_o adom_n we_o have_v bad_a say_v the_o apostle_n father_n of_o our_o flesh_n who_o correct_v we_o father_n of_o our_o fleshly_a part_n of_o our_o body_n and_o they_o who_o be_v father_n of_o that_o be_v father_n of_o our_o corrupt_a nature_n i._n e._n we_o have_v it_o from_o they_o for_o when_o any_o be_v conceive_v in_o sin_n be_v they_o conceive_v 2._o corruption_n of_o nature_n be_v natural_o as_o dear_a to_o man_n as_o their_o flesh_n their_o very_a body_n and_o as_o near_o to_o they_o no_o man_n hate_v his_o own_o flesh_n but_o cherish_v it_o so_o no_o man_n natural_o hate_v his_o corrupt_a nature_n which_o he_o bring_v into_o the_o world_n with_o he_o but_o every_o one_o cherish_v and_o nourish_v his_o corruption_n and_o make_v provision_n for_o it_o till_o he_o be_v renew_v yea_o how_o many_o show_n more_o love_n more_o tenderness_n towards_o their_o corruption_n than_o to_o their_o very_a body_n how_o many_o endure_v much_o suffer_v great_o in_o their_o body_n and_o venture_v and_o lose_v not_o unusual_o their_o life_n itself_o from_o their_o love_n to_o some_o vile_a lust_n which_o be_v to_o they_o as_o their_o right_a eye_n their_o right_a hand_n or_o right_a foot_n and_o as_o their_o life_n itself_o skin_n for_o skin_n and_o all_o that_o a_o man_n have_v will_v he_o give_v for_o his_o life_n only_o a_o man_n lust_n that_o be_v many_o time_n so_o dear_a to_o he_o he_o will_v hazard_v his_o life_n to_o satisfy_v it_o rather_o than_o lay_v it_o aside_o or_o part_n with_o it_o 3._o corruption_n grow_v with_o the_o flesh_n and_o as_o the_o flesh_n be_v strong_a or_o weak_a so_o frequent_o be_v the_o working_n of_o lust_n hence_o the_o apostle_n say_v he_o keep_v under_o his_o body_n in_o fickness_n in_o bodily_a weakness_n this_o and_o that_o sin_n do_v not_o ordinary_o member_n and_o another_o man_n excel_v in_o another_o member_n of_o his_o body_n one_o have_v better_a eye_n another_o better_a ear_n another_o better_a leg_n but_o still_o they_o have_v the_o same_o kind_n of_o part_n so_o one_o man_n be_v more_o notable_a or_o notorious_a in_o one_o lust_n another_o in_o another_o lust_n one_o be_v famous_a or_o rather_o infamous_a for_o his_o pride_n another_o for_o his_o dissemble_n a_o three_o for_o his_o covetousness_n but_o all_o have_v the_o same_o lust_n by_o nature_n you_o may_v say_v some_o man_n never_o commit_v some_o sin_n some_o be_v never_o drink_v never_o commit_v fornication_n therefore_o corrupt_a nature_n seem_v to_o have_v more_o member_n in_o one_o than_o in_o another_o a._n a_o man_n may_v have_v hand_n and_o leg_n or_o ear_n though_o he_o never_o use_v they_o because_o of_o some_o weakness_n or_o impediment_n so_o some_o may_v not_o put_v forth_o this_o or_o that_o lust_n and_o yet_o have_v it_o in_o they_o for_o it_o may_v be_v impede_v or_o hinder_v through_o their_o bodily_a constitution_n education_n or_o some_o other_o cause_n so_o that_o they_o do_v exercise_n exert_n or_o show_v it_o as_o other_o do_v and_o blood_n move_v his_o heart_n it_o open_v and_o shut_v it_o empty_v and_o fill_v the_o heart_n etc._n etc._n four_o corruption_n of_o nature_n chief_o act_n in_o every_o one_o according_a to_o the_o temperament_n or_o constitution_n of_o his_o body_n if_o a_o man_n be_v of_o a_o sanguine_a complexion_n his_o corruption_n work_v suitable_o to_o that_o as_o be_v observe_v in_o david_n who_o be_v of_o a_o ruddy_a countenance_n or_o if_o a_o man_n be_v of_o a_o choleric_a melancholy_a or_o phlegmatic_a temper_n according_o natural_a sin_n do_v discover_v itself_o and_o its_o fruit_n be_v answerable_a five_o as_o the_o body_n and_o soul_n of_o man_n be_v separable_a so_o corruption_n and_o man_n soul_n though_o it_o be_v natural_a yet_o it_o may_v be_v separate_v from_o the_o soul_n and_o the_o soul_n may_v be_v quite_o rid_v of_o its_o sin_n as_o of_o its_o body_n corrupt_a nature_n may_v be_v kill_v as_o the_o body_n and_o so_o the_o soul_n release_v from_o it_o though_o not_o so_o easy_o a_o easy_a matter_n be_v it_o to_o kill_v the_o body_n wherein_o the_o soul_n dwell_v not_o so_o to_o kill_v that_o sin_n that_o natural_o dwell_v in_o the_o soul_n yet_o both_o be_v alike_o easy_a to_o god_n it_o be_v as_o facile_a or_o easy_a to_o he_o to_o destroy_v our_o body_n which_o we_o have_v as_o sinner_n as_o it_o be_v for_o he_o to_o kill_v our_o body_n which_o we_o have_v as_o man_n he_o can_v run_v it_o through_o and_o pierce_v the_o very_a heart_n of_o the_o body_n of_o sin_n in_o we_o by_o the_o sword_n of_o his_o spirit_n much_o more_o easy_o than_o goliath_n have_v he_o be_v near_o david_n can_v have_v run_v he_o through_o with_o his_o sword_n six_o as_o the_o body_n do_v nothing_o act_v not_o move_v not_o without_o the_o soul_n and_o if_o the_o soul_n be_v once_o go_v it_o be_v dead_a without_o any_o motion_n or_o ability_n to_o move_v so_o corrupt_a nature_n act_v not_o without_o our_o soul_n it_o work_v by_o the_o understanding_n by_o the_o will_n by_o this_o and_o that_o affection_n have_v not_o a_o man_n a_o immortal_a soul_n he_o will_v have_v no_o corruption_n as_o beast_n
therefore_o they_o hardly_o have_v the_o spirit_n in_o a_o special_a save_a way_n at_o least_o work_v with_o they_o who_o only_o seek_v to_o get_v sin_n down_o but_o mind_v not_o to_o get_v grace_n up_o six_o this_o be_v a_o sure_a rule_n whatever_o the_o spirit_n help_v we_o to_o do_v it_o cause_v we_o to_o do_v from_o a_o gracious_a principle_n to_o a_o gracious_a end_n so_o in_o the_o present_a case_n if_o the_o spirit_n stir_v up_o any_o to_o mortify_v their_o sin_n it_o cause_v they_o to_o endeavour_v the_o death_n thereof_o from_o a_o principle_n of_o hatred_n of_o sin_n love_v to_o god_n and_o faith_n of_o his_o word_n and_o if_o the_o spirit_n work_v with_o we_o it_o cause_v we_o to_o strive_v to_o ruin_v sin_n not_o only_o as_o contrary_v to_o we_o but_o as_o contrary_a which_o god_n name_n your_o profession_n and_o your_o soul_n most_o suffer_v that_o you_o especial_o strike_v at_o and_o war_n upon_o chief_o your_o chief_a sin_n your_o iniquity_n your_o master_n corruption_n which_o be_v in_o you_o the_o worst_a for_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n be_v a_o spirit_n of_o wisdom_n and_o when_o it_o afford_v its_o assistance_n it_o be_v according_a to_o true_a wisdom_n therefore_o it_o speak_v saul_n to_o be_v act_v by_o his_o own_o spirit_n in_o that_o he_o spare_v agag_n the_o chief_a of_o the_o amalekit_n against_o who_o god_n send_v he_o whereas_o of_o
