that_o great_a champion_n of_o necessity_n and_o the_o beggarliness_n of_o his_o cause_n which_o admit_v no_o defence_n but_o with_o a_o cudgel_n no_o man_n say_v the_o servant_n ought_v to_o be_v beat_v for_o do_v that_o which_o he_o be_v compel_v inevitable_o to_o do_v but_o i_o be_o compel_v inevitable_o to_o steal_v the_o major_n be_v so_o evident_a that_o it_o can_v be_v deny_v if_o a_o strong_a man_n shall_v take_v a_o weak_a man_n hand_n perforce_o and_o do_v violence_n with_o it_o to_o a_o three_o person_n he_o who_o hand_n be_v force_v be_v innocent_a and_o he_o only_o culpable_a of_o piety_n who_o will_v bewail_v his_o sin_n with_o tear_n what_o will_v become_v of_o that_o grief_n that_o zeal_n that_o indignation_n that_o holy_a revenge_n which_o the_o apostle_n speak_v of_o if_o man_n be_v once_o thorough_o persuade_v that_o they_o can_v not_o shun_v what_o they_o do_v a_o man_n may_v grieve_v for_o that_o which_o he_o can_v not_o help_v but_o he_o will_v never_o be_v bring_v to_o bewall_n that_o as_o his_o own_o fault_n which_o flow_v not_o from_o his_o own_o error_n but_o from_o a_o antecedent_n necessity_n who_o will_v be_v careful_a or_o solicitous_a to_o perform_v obedience_n that_o believe_v there_o be_v inevitable_a bound_n and_o limit_n set_v to_o all_o his_o devotion_n which_o he_o can_v neither_o go_v beyond_o nor_o come_v short_a of_o to_o what_o end_n shall_v he_o pray_v god_n to_o avert_v those_o evil_n which_o be_v inevitable_a or_o to_o confer_v those_o favour_n which_o be_v impossible_a we_o indeed_o know_v not_o what_o good_a or_o evil_n shall_v happen_v to_o we_o but_o this_o we_o know_v that_o if_o all_o thing_n be_v necessary_a our_o devotion_n and_o endeavour_n can_v alter_v that_o which_o must_v be_v in_o a_o word_n the_o only_a reason_n why_o those_o person_n who_o tread_v in_o this_o path_n of_o fatal_a destiny_n do_v sometime_o pray_v or_o repent_v or_o serve_v god_n be_v because_o the_o light_n of_o nature_n and_o the_o strength_n of_o reason_n and_o the_o evidence_n of_o scripture_n do_v for_o that_o present_a transport_v they_o from_o their_o ill_a choose_a ground_n and_o expel_v those_o stociall_a fancy_n out_o of_o their_o head_n a_o complete_a stoic_a can_v neither_o pray_v nor_o repent_v nor_o serve_v god_n to_o any_o purpose_n either_o allow_v liberty_n or_o destroy_v church_n as_o well_o as_o commonwealth_n religion_n as_o well_o as_o policy_n t._n h._n his_o three_o argument_n consist_v in_o other_o inconvenience_n which_o he_o say_v will_v follow_v namely_o impiety_n &_o neglicence_n of_o religious_a duty_n repentance_n and_o zeal_n to_o god_n service_n to_o which_o i_o answer_v as_o to_o the_o rest_n that_o they_o follow_v not_o i_o must_v confess_v if_o we_o consider_v far_o the_o great_a part_n of_o mankind_n not_o as_o they_o shall_v be_v but_o as_o they_o be_v that_o be_v as_o man_n who_o either_o the_o study_n of_o acquire_v wealth_n or_o preferment_n or_o who_o the_o appetite_n of_o sensual_a delight_n or_o the_o impatience_n of_o meditate_v or_o the_o rash_a embrace_n of_o wrong_a principle_n have_v make_v unapt_a to_o discuss_v the_o truth_n of_o thing_n that_o the_o dispute_n of_o this_o question_n will_v rather_o hurt_v than_o help_v their_o piety_n and_o therefore_o if_o he_o have_v not_o desire_v this_o answer_n i_o will_v not_o have_v write_v it_o nor_o do_v i_o write_v it_o but_o in_o hope_v your_o lordship_n and_o he_o will_v keep_v it_o in_o private_a nevertheless_o in_o very_a truth_n the_o necessity_n of_o event_n do_v not_o of_o itself_o draw_v with_o it_o any_o impiety_n at_o all_o for_o piety_n consist_v only_o in_o two_o thing_n one_o that_o we_o honour_n god_n in_o our_o heart_n which_o be_v that_o we_o think_v of_o his_o power_n as_o high_o as_o we_o can_v for_o to_o honour_v any_o thing_n be_v nothing_o else_o but_o to_o think_v it_o to_o be_v of_o great_a power_n the_o other_o that_o we_o signify_v that_o honour_n and_o esteem_v by_o our_o word_n and_o action_n which_o be_v call_v cultus_fw-la or_o worship_n of_o god_n he_o therefore_o that_o think_v that_o all_o thing_n proceed_v from_o god_n eternal_a will_n and_o consequent_o be_v necessary_a do_v he_o not_o think_v god_n omnipotent_a do_v he_o not_o esteem_v of_o his_o power_n as_o high_o as_o possible_a which_o be_v to_o honour_n god_n as_o much_o as_o can_v be_v in_o his_o heart_n again_o he_o that_o think_v so_o be_v he_o not_o more_o apt_a by_o external_a act_n and_o word_n to_o acknowledge_v it_o than_o he_o that_o think_v otherwise_o yet_o be_v this_o external_a acknowledgement_n the_o same_o thing_n which_o we_o call_v worship_n so_o this_o opinion_n fortify_v piety_n in_o both_o kind_n external_o internal_o and_o therefore_o be_v far_o from_o destroy_v it_o and_o for_o repentance_n which_o be_v nothing_o but_o a_o glad_a return_v into_o the_o right_a way_n after_o the_o grief_n of_o be_v out_o of_o the_o way_n though_o the_o cause_n that_o make_v he_o go_v astray_o be_v necessary_a yet_o there_o be_v no_o reason_n why_o he_o shall_v not_o grieve_v and_o again_o though_o the_o cause_n why_o he_o return_v into_o the_o way_n be_v necessary_a there_o remain_v still_o the_o cause_n of_o joy_n so_o that_o the_o necessity_n of_o the_o action_n take_v away_o neither_o of_o those_o part_n of_o repentance_n grief_n for_o the_o error_n nor_o joy_n for_o the_o return_v and_o for_o prayer_n whereas_o he_o say_v that_o the_o necessity_n of_o thing_n destroy_v prayer_n i_o deny_v it_o for_o though_o prayer_n be_v none_o of_o the_o cause_n that_o move_v god_n will_v his_o will_n be_v unchangeable_a yet_o since_o we_o find_v in_o god_n word_n he_o will_v not_o give_v his_o blessing_n but_o to_o those_o that_o ask_v they_o the_o motive_n to_o prayer_n be_v the_o same_o prayer_n be_v the_o gift_n of_o god_n no_o less_o than_o the_o blessing_n and_o the_o prayer_n be_v decree_v together_o in_o the_o same_o decree_n wherein_o the_o blessing_n be_v decree_v it_o be_v manifest_a that_o thanksgiving_n be_v no_o cause_n of_o the_o blessing_n past_a and_o that_o which_o be_v pass_v be_v sure_a and_o necessary_a yet_o even_o among_o man_n thanks_o be_v in_o use_n as_o a_o acknowledgement_n of_o the_o benefit_n past_a though_o we_o shall_v expect_v no_o new_a benefit_n for_o our_o gratitude_n and_o prayer_n to_o god_n almighty_n be_v but_o thanksgiving_n for_o his_o blessing_n in_o general_a and_o though_o it_o precede_v the_o particular_a thing_n we_o ask_v yet_o it_o be_v not_o a_o cause_n or_o mean_n of_o it_o but_o a_o signification_n that_o we_o expect_v nothing_o but_o from_o god_n in_o such_o manner_n as_o he_o not_o as_o we_o will_n and_o our_o saviour_n by_o word_n of_o mouth_n bid_v we_o pray_v thy_o will_n not_o our_o will_n be_v do_v and_o by_o example_n teach_v we_o the_o same_o for_o he_o pray_v thus_o father_n if_o it_o be_v thy_o will_n let_v this_o cup_n pass_v etc._n etc._n the_o end_n of_o prayer_n as_o of_o thanksgiving_n be_v not_o to_o move_v but_o to_o honour_n god_n almighty_a in_o acknowledge_v that_o what_o we_o ask_v can_v be_v effect_v by_o he_o only_o j._n d._n i_o hope_v t._n h._n will_v be_v persuade_v in_o time_n that_o it_o be_v not_o the_o covetousness_n or_o ambition_n or_o sensuality_n or_o sloth_n or_o prejudice_n of_o his_o reader_n which_o render_v this_o doctrine_n of_o absolute_a necessity_n dangerous_a but_o that_o it_o be_v in_o its_o own_o nature_n destructive_a to_o true_a godliness_n and_o though_o his_o answer_n consist_v more_o of_o opposition_n than_o of_o solution_n yet_o i_o will_v not_o willing_o leave_v one_o grain_n of_o his_o matter_n unweighed_a first_o he_o err_v in_o make_v inward_a piety_n to_o consist_v mere_o in_o the_o estimation_n of_o the_o judgement_n if_o this_o be_v so_o what_o hinder_v but_o that_o the_o devil_n shall_v have_v as_o much_o inward_a piety_n as_o the_o best_a christian_n for_o they_o esteem_v god_n power_n to_o be_v infinite_a and_o tremble_v though_o inward_a piety_n do_v suppose_v the_o act_n of_o the_o understanding_n yet_o it_o consist_v proper_o in_o the_o act_n of_o the_o will_n be_v that_o branch_n of_o justice_n which_o give_v to_o god_n the_o honour_n which_o be_v due_a unto_o he_o be_v there_o no_o love_n due_a to_o god_n no_o faith_n no_o hope_n second_o he_o err_v in_o make_v inward_a piety_n to_o ascribe_v no_o glory_n to_o god_n but_o only_o the_o glory_n of_o his_o power_n or_o omnipotence_n what_o shall_v become_v of_o all_o other_o the_o divine_a attribute_n and_o particular_o of_o his_o goodness_n of_o his_o truth_n of_o his_o justice_n of_o his_o mercy_n which_o beget_v a_o more_o true_a and_o sincere_a honour_n in_o the_o heart_n than_o greatness_n itself_o magnos_fw-la facile_fw-la laudamus_fw-la bonos_fw-es lubenter_fw-la three_o this_o opinion_n of_o absolute_a necessity_n destroy_v the_o truth_n of_o god_n make_v he_o to_o command_v one_o thing_n open_o and_o to_o necessitate_v another_o private_o to_o chide_v a_o
