talent_n be_v not_o mean_v natural_a ability_n 1_o to_o understand_v the_o talent_n of_o natural_a ability_n take_v away_o all_o pertinency_n and_o aptness_n either_o to_o the_o person_n speak_v to_o or_o the_o occasion_n of_o speak_v from_o the_o word_n of_o christ_n which_o yet_o we_o be_v upon_o very_o necessary_a principle_n to_o grant_v to_o they_o the_o person_n to_o who_o these_o word_n be_v speak_v be_v jew_n who_o have_v the_o letter_n of_o the_o gospel_n preach_v to_o they_o and_o the_o occasion_n of_o speak_v these_o word_n be_v immediate_o upon_o the_o preach_v that_o parable_n of_o the_o sour_a the_o seed_n be_v the_o word_n it_o fall_v on_o all_o ground_n good_a and_o bad_a the_o stony_a thorny_a highway_n ground_n but_o these_o mystery_n our_o saviour_n speak_v in_o the_o letter_n of_o the_o gospel_n and_o god_n do_v not_o fail_v to_o reveal_v his_o son_n christ_n to_o they_o else_o how_o can_v they_o be_v unbelieving_a and_o if_o he_o reveal_v his_o son_n to_o such_o as_o do_v not_o use_v their_o natural_a ability_n regular_o where_o be_v mr._n goodwin_n stand_v course_n of_o providence_n of_o reveal_v or_o hide_v his_o son_n christ_n according_a to_o man_n and_o that_o of_o he_o we_o receive_v grace_n for_o grace_n but_o where_o shall_v we_o find_v that_o his_o church_n receive_v from_o he_o the_o ability_n of_o nature_n and_o that_o from_o he_o as_o mediator_n now_o he_o must_v prove_v this_o before_o it_o can_v be_v clear_a that_o these_o talent_n signify_v natural_a ability_n 4_o those_o talent_n that_o be_v give_v be_v in_o a_o various_a degree_n to_o diverse_a man_n some_o five_o some_o two_o some_o one_o talon_n but_o how_o can_v mr._n goodwin_n make_v his_o to_o agree_v with_o the_o light_n of_o nature_n if_o he_o consider_v his_o ability_n i_o see_v not_o for_o what_o prexistent_n or_o prevenient_a ability_n and_o endowment_n to_o those_o which_o we_o call_v natural_a according_a to_o the_o proportion_n of_o which_o natural_a but_o this_o can_v be_v affirm_v of_o the_o ability_n of_o nature_n and_o that_o neither_o upon_o the_o principle_n of_o mr._n goodwin_n nor_o yet_o of_o the_o remonstrants'_v joint_o for_o in_o all_o their_o endowment_n the_o improvement_n of_o the_o light_n of_o nature_n to_o the_o height_n be_v not_o immediate_o save_v 7_o these_o talent_n be_v give_v to_o his_o servant_n at_o his_o go_v into_o what_o do_v all_o man_n long_o before_o if_o he_o give_v not_o natural_a ability_n till_o his_o ascension_n whether_o will_v not_o this_o gloss_n depretiate_v those_o princely_a donative_n with_o which_o he_o solemn_o honour_v his_o ascension_n to_o bring_v they_o so_o low_a as_o the_o ability_n of_o nature_n these_o thing_n i_o lay_v down_o as_o have_v afford_v much_o colour_n of_o reason_n if_o no_o more_o and_o till_o these_o be_v clear_v i_o can_v think_v that_o by_o talent_n be_v mean_v natural_a ability_n thus_o have_v discuss_v the_o talent_n i_o shall_v examine_v whether_o he_o speak_v right_a upon_o the_o servant_n to_o who_o these_o talent_n be_v give_v mr._n goodwin_n describe_v they_o very_o suitable_o to_o his_o purpose_n thus_o by_o the_o servant_n who_o receive_v these_o talent_n as_o in_o a_o glass_n we_o may_v see_v the_o condition_n and_o state_n not_o of_o believer_n only_o or_o those_o that_o shall_v be_v save_v but_o of_o the_o generality_n of_o mankind_n or_o at_o least_o of_o they_o that_o shall_v perish_v as_o well_o as_o of_o they_o that_o shall_v be_v save_v now_o indeed_o if_o by_o talent_n be_v mean_v natural_a ability_n he_o have_v need_n make_v the_o servant_n to_o be_v all_o mankind_n and_o no_o other_o interpretation_n will_v serve_v his_o turn_n handsome_o and_o therefore_o mr._n goodwin_n will_v have_v we_o believe_v that_o by_o the_o servant_n in_o the_o parable_n be_v mean_v the_o state_n and_o condition_n or_o more_o proper_o the_o person_n of_o all_o mankind_n but_o how_o do_v he_o prove_v it_o he_o think_v he_o good_a and_o edification_n of_o his_o church_n though_o their_o person_n perish_v and_o this_o i_o hope_v may_v well_o be_v and_o yet_o not_o all_o mankind_n come_v under_o the_o notion_n of_o his_o houshold-servant_n for_o we_o may_v know_v from_o scripture_n that_o christ_n have_v a_o house_n of_o his_o own_o &_o a_o retinue_n of_o his_o own_o the_o government_n and_o edification_n of_o which_o it_o be_v evident_a it_o be_v in_o the_o same_o kind_n the_o increase_n be_v of_o the_o one_o talon_n that_o be_v give_v to_o he_o that_o have_v gain_v five_o to_o his_o five_o that_o which_o be_v promise_v to_o he_o that_o have_v be_v not_o variety_n but_o abundance_n in_o the_o same_o kind_n so_o that_o look_v what_o the_o increase_n be_v we_o may_v conclude_v such_o be_v the_o talent_n improve_v but_o then_o suppose_v we_o shall_v concede_fw-la to_o mr._n goodwin_n all_o he_o desire_v that_o talent_n signify_v natural_a ability_n and_o the_o servant_n all_o mankind_n in_o general_a against_o the_o current_n of_o the_o parable_n for_o if_o the_o talent_n give_v &_o the_o increase_n give_v upon_o improvement_n be_v of_o one_o and_o the_o same_o kind_n then_o if_o the_o talent_n be_v the_o ability_n of_o nature_n 21._o pag._n 20_o 21._o than_o the_o increase_n must_v be_v natural_a also_o which_o mr._n goodwin_n like_v not_o for_o he_o say_v express_o it_o be_v not_o a_o increase_n of_o natural_a ability_n but_o of_o more_o save_a grace_n or_o else_o if_o the_o increase_n be_v spiritual_a grace_n than_o the_o talent_n can_v be_v natural_a ability_n contrary_a to_o his_o present_a doctrine_n to_o sum_v up_o all_o then_o together_o we_o may_v see_v how_o unhandsome_o his_o assertion_n and_o this_o parable_n of_o the_o talent_n meet_v his_o assertion_n plead_v that_o the_o talent_n original_o give_v be_v natural_a gift_n the_o parable_n seem_v to_o carry_v it_o for_o supernatural_a grace_n his_o assertion_n urge_v that_o these_o servant_n be_v all_o mankind_n in_o general_a the_o parable_n confine_v they_o only_o to_o his_o church_n which_o be_v christ_n house_n and_o over_o which_o he_o be_v head_n and_o master_n and_o for_o who_o use_n he_o bestow_v his_o good_n to_o his_o servant_n his_o assertion_n contend_v for_o a_o gift_n and_o a_o increase_n to_o be_v in_o diverso_fw-la genere_fw-la in_o a_o diverse_a kind_n the_o parable_n make_v both_o the_o improvement_n and_o increase_n to_o be_v in_o eodem_fw-la genere_fw-la in_o the_o same_o kind_n quà m_fw-la benè_fw-la conveniunt_fw-la which_o be_v consider_v we_o may_v come_v to_o see_v that_o that_o parable_n of_o the_o talent_n indeed_o it_o uphold_v such_o a_o course_n of_o providence_n as_o to_o bless_v the_o improvement_n of_o grace_n with_o more_o grace_n but_o hold_v not_o forth_o such_o a_o course_n of_o providence_n as_o mr._n goodwin_n pretend_v which_o to_o make_v a_o increase_n of_o grace_n to_o they_o that_o use_v nature_n well_o because_o in_o this_o course_n of_o providence_n the_o improvement_n and_o the_o increase_n be_v of_o divers_a kind_n but_o the_o parable_n hold_v forth_o that_o only_a wherein_o both_o be_v in_o the_o same_o kind_n and_o as_o i_o have_v prove_v there_o be_v no_o such_o course_n of_o providence_n so_o i_o have_v also_o clear_v that_o he_o have_v not_o prove_v any_o such_o course_n
no_o not_o by_o the_o strength_n of_o that_o text_n to_o he_o that_o have_v shall_v be_v give_v but_o fourthly_a and_o last_o suppose_v we_o grant_v he_o all_o these_o three_o that_o man_n can_v improve_v natural_n regular_o and_o so_o please_v god_n and_o so_o procure_v increase_n of_o grace_n according_a to_o that_o stand_a course_n of_o providene_a yet_o will_v it_o not_o so_o roundly_o follow_v as_o mr._n goodwin_n pretend_v that_o all_o man_n even_o the_o heathen_a be_v in_o a_o sufficiency_n of_o mean_n to_o believe_v in_o jesus_n christ_n &_o that_o upon_o the_o ground_n
