IX 1 Moses diss●adeth them from the opinion of their own righteousness by rehearsing their several rebellions HEar O Israel Thou art to pass over Jordan this day to go in to possess nations greater and mightier then thy self cities great and senced up to heaven 2 A people great and tall * Num. 13.28 the children of the Anakims whom thou knowest and of whom thou hast heard say Who can stand before the children of Anak 3 Understand therefore this day that the LORD thy God is he which goeth over before thee as a * Ch. 4.24 Heb. 12.29 consuming fire he shall destroy them and he shall bring them down before thy face so shalt thou drive them out and destroy them quickly as the LORD hath said unto thee 4 Speal not thou in thine heart after that the LORD thy God hath cast them out from before thee saying For my righteousness the LORD hath brought me in to possess this land but for the wickedness of these nations the LORD doth drive them out from before thee 5 Not for thy righteousness or for the uprightness of thine heart dost thou go to possess their land but for the wickedness of these nations the LORD thy God doth drive them out from before thee and that he may perf●rm the word which the LORD sware unto thy fathers Abraham Isaac and Jacob. 6 Understand therefore that the LORD thy God giveth thee not this good land to possess it for thy righteousness for thou art a stiff-necked people 7 ¶ Remember and forget not how thou provokedst the LORD thy God to wrath in the wilderness from the day that thou didst depart out of the land of Egypt until ye came unto this place ye have been rebellious against the LORD 8 Also in Horeb ye provoked the LORD to wrath so that the LORD was angry with you to have destroyed you 9 When I was gone up into the mount to receive the tables of stone even the tables of the covenant which the LORD made with you then * Exod. 24.28 34.28 I abode in the mount fourty days and fourty nights I neither did eat bread nor drink water 10 * Ex. 31.18 And the LORD delivered unto me two tables of stone written with the singer of God and on them was written according to all the words which the LORD spake with you in the mount out of the mid●t of fire in the day of the assembly 11 And it came to pass at the end of fourty days and fourty nights that the LORD gave me the two tables of stone even the tables of the covenant 12 And the LORD said unto me * Exod. 32.7 Arise get thee down quickly from hence for thy people which thou hast brought forth out of Egypt have corrupted themselves they are quickly turned aside out of the way which I commanded them they have made them a molten image 13 Furthermore the LORD spake unto me saying I have seen this people and behold it is a stiff-necked people 14 Let me alone that I may destroy them and blot out their name from under heaven and I will make of thee a nation mightier and greater then they 15 So I turned and came down from the mount and the mount burned with fire and the two tables of the covenant were in my two hands 16 And I looked and behold ye had sinned against the LORD your God and had made you a molten calf ye had turned aside quickly out of the way which the LORD had commanded you 17 And I took the two tables and cast them out of my two hands and brake them before your eyes 18 And I fell down before the LORD as at the first fourty days and fourty nights I did neither eat bread nor drink water because of all your sins which ye sinned in doing wickedly in the sight of the LORD to provoke him to anger 19 For I was afraid of the anger and hot displeasure wherewith the LORD was wroth against you to destroy you But the LORD hearkned unto me at that time also 20 And the LORD was very angry with Aaron to have destroyed him and I prayed for Aaron also the same time 21 And I took your sin the calf which ye had made and burnt it with fire and stamped it and ground it very small even until it was as small as dust and I cast the dust thereof into the brook that descended out of the mount 22 And at * Num. 11.1 3. in the cities thereof 25 And so it was at the beginning of their dwelling there that they feared not the LORD therefore the LORD sent lions among them which slew some of them 26 Wherefore they spake to the king of Assyria saying The nations which thou hast removed and placed in the cities of Samaria know not the manner of the God of the land therefore he hath sent lions among them and behold they slay them because they know not the manner of the God of the land 27 Then the king of Assyria commanded saying Carry thither one of the priests whom ye brought from thence let them go and dwell there and let him teach them the manner of the God of the land 28 Then one of the priests whom they had carried away from Samaria came and dwelt in Beth-el and taught them how they should fear the LORD 29 Howbeit every nation made gods of their own and put them in the houses of the high places which the Samaritans had made every nation in their cities wherein they dwelt 30 And the men of Babylon made Succoth-benoth and the men of Cuth made Nergal and the men of Hamath made Ashima 31 And the Avites made Nibhaz and Tartak and the Sepharvites burnt their children in fire to Adrammelech and Anammelech the gods of Sepharvaim 32 So they feared the LORD and made unto themselves of the lowest of them priests of the high places which sacrificed for them in the houses of the high places 33 * Zeph. 1.5 They feared the LORD and served their own gods after the manner of the nations ‖ Or who c●●●●ed them away from thence whom they carried away from thence 34 Unto this day they do after the former manners they fear not the LORD neither do they after their statutes or after their ordinances or after the law and commandment which the LORD commanded the children of Jacob * Gen. 32.28 1 Kings 18.21 whom he named Israel 35 With whom the LORD had made a covenant and charged them saying * Judg. 6 1● Ye shall not fear other gods nor bow your selves to them norserve them nor sacrifice to them 35 But the LORD who brought you up out of the land of Egypt with great power and a stretched-out arm him shall ye fear and him shall ye worship and to him shall ye do sacrifice 37 And the statutes and the ordinances and the law and the commandment which he wrote for you ye shall observe to do for evermore and ye shall not fear other gods 38 And the covenant that I have made with you ye shall not forget neither shall ye fear other gods 39 But the LORD your God ye shall fear and he shall deliver you out of the hand of all your enemies 40 Howbeit they did not hearken but they did after their former manner 41 So these nations feared the LORD and served their graven images both their children and their childrens children as did their fathers so do they unto this day CHAP. XVIII 1 Hezekiah his good reign 4 He destroyeth idolatry and prospereth 9 Samaria is curried captive for their sins 13 Sennacherib invading Judah is pacified by a tribute 17 Rab-shakeh sent by Sennacherib again revileth Hezekiah and by blasphemous perswasions soliciteth the people to revolt NOw it came to pass in the third year of Hoshea son of Elah king of Israel that * 2 Chr. 28.27 and 10.1 He is called Ezekias Mat. 1.9 Hezekiah the son of Ahaz king of Judah began to reign 2 Twenty and five years old was he when he began to reign and he reigned twenty and nine years in Jerusalem his mothers name also was Abi the daughter of Zachariah 3 And he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD according to all that David his father did 4 ¶ He removed the high places and brake the † Heb. statute images and cut down the groves and brake in pieces the * Num. 11.9 brasen serpent that Moses had made for unto those days the children of Israel did burn incense to it and he called it Nehushtan 5 He trusted in the LORD God of Israel so that after him was none like him among all the kings of Judah nor any that were before him 6 For he clave to the LORD and departed not † Heb. from after him from following him but kept his commandments which the LORD commanded Moses 7 And the LORD was with him and he prospered whithersoever he went forth and he rebelled against the king of Assyria and served him not 8 He smote the Philistines even unto † Heb. Sanberib Sennacherib king of Assyria come up against all the fenced cities of Judah and took them 14 And Hezekiah king of Judah sent to the king of Assyria to Lachish saying I have offended return from me that which thou puttest on me I will bear And the king of Assyria appointed unto Hezekiah king of Judah three hundred talents of silver thirty talents of gold 15 And Hezekiah gave him all the silver that was found in the house of the LORD and in the treasures of the kings house 16 At that time did Hezekiah cut off the gold from the doors of the temple of the LORD and from the pillars which Hezekiah king of Judah had overlaid and gave † Heb. them it to the king of Assyria 17 ¶ And the king of Assyria sent Tartan and Rablaris and Rabshakeh from Lachish to king Hezekiah with a † Heb. heavy great host against Jerusalem and they went up and came to Jerusalem and when they were come up they came and stood by the conduit of the upper pool which is in the high-way of the fullers field 18 And when they had called to the king there came out to them Eliakim the son of Hilkiah which was over the houshold and Shebna the ‖ Or secretary scribe and Joah the son of Asaph the recorder 19 And Rab-shakeh

David and the elders of Israel and the captains over thousands went to bring up the ark of the covenant of the LORD out of the house of Obed-edom with joy 26 And it came to pass when God helped the Levites that bare the ark of the covenant of the LORD that they offered seven bullocks and seven rams 27 And David was clothed with a robe of fine linen and all the Levites that bare the ark and the singers and Chenaniah the master of the ‖ Or carriage song with the singers David also had upon him an ephod of linen 28 Thus all Israel brought up the ark of the covenant of the LORD with shouting and with sound of the cornet and with trumpets and with cymbals making a noise with psalteries and harps 29 ¶ And it came to pass as the ark of the covenant of the LORD came to the city of David that Michal the daughter of Saul looking out at a window saw king David dancing and playing and she despised him in her heart CHAP. XVI 1 Davids festival sacrifice 4 He ordereth a quire to sine thanksgiving 7 The psalm of thanksgiving 37 He appointeth ministers porter priests and musicians to attend continually on the ark SO * 2 Sam. 6.17 they brought the ark of God and set it in the midst of the tent that David had pitched for it and they offered burnt-sacrifices and peace-offerings before God 2 And when David had made an end of offering the burnt-offerings the peace-offerings he blessed the people in the name of the LORD 3 And he dealt to every one of Israel both man and woman to every one a loaf of bread and a good piece of flesh and a flagon of wine 4 ¶ And he appointed certain of the Levites to minister before the ark of the LORD and to record and to thank and praise the LORD God of Israel 5 Asaph the chief and next to him Zechariah Jeiel and Shemiramoth and Jehiel and Mattithiah and Eliah and Benaiah and Obed-edom and Jeiel † Heb. with instruments of psalteries and harps with psalteries and with harps but Asaph made a sound with cymbals 6 Benaiah also and Jahaziel the priests with trumpets continually before the ark of the covenant of God 7 ¶ Then on that day David delivered first this psalm to thank the LORD into the hand of Asaph and his brethren 8 * Psal 105 1. VI. 1 Holofernes despiseth God 7 He threatneth Achior and sendeth him away 14 The Bethulians receive and bear him 18 They fall to prayer and comfort Achior ANd when the tumult of men that were about the council was ceased Holofernes the chief captain of the army of Assur said unto Achior and all the Moabites before all the company of other nations 2 And who art thou Achior and the hirelings of Ephraim that thou hast prophesied amongst us as to day and hast said that we should not make war with the people of Israel because their God will defend them and who is God but Nabuchodonosor 3 He will send his power and will destroy them from the face of the earth and their God shall not deliver them but we his servants will destroy them as one man for they are not able to sustain the power of our horses 4 For with them we will tread them under foot and their mountains shall be drunken with their bloud and their fields shall be filled with their dead bodies and their footsteps shall not be able to stand before us for they shall utterly perish saith king Nabuchodonosor lord of all the earth for he said None of my words shall be in vain 5 And thou Achior an hireling of Ammon which hast spoken these words in the day of thine iniquity shalt see my face no more from this day until I take vengeance of this nation that came out of Egypt 6 And then shall the sword of mine army and the multitude of them that serve me pass through thy sides and thou shalt fall among their slain when I return 7 Now therefore my servants shall bring thee back into the hill-countrey and shall set thee in one of the cities of the passages 8 And thou shalt not perish till thou be destroyed with them 9 And if thou perswade thy self in thy minde that they shall not be taken let not thy countenance fall I have spoken it and none of my words shall be in vain 10 Then Holofernes commanded his servants that waited in his tent to take Achior and bring him to Bethulia and deliver him into the hands of the children of Israel 11 So his servants took him and brought him out of the camp into the plain and they went from the midst of the plain into the hill-countrey and came unto the fountains that were under Bethulia 12 And when the men of the city
covered her head with ashes and dung and she humbled her body greatly and all the places of her joy she fided with her torn hair 3 And she prayed unto the Lord God of Israel saying O my Lord thou onely art our King help me desolate woman which have no helper but thee 4 * 1 Sam. 〈◊〉 28.21 Job 13.14 Ps 119.109 For my danger is in mine hand 5 From my youth up I have heard in the tribe of my family that thou O Lord tookest Israel from among all people and our fathers from all their predecessours for a perpetual inheritance and thou hast performed whatsoever thou didst promise them 6 And now we have sinned before thee therefore hast thou given us into the hands of our enemies 7 Because we worshipped their gods O Lord thou artrighteous 8 Nevertheless it satisfieth them not that we are in bitter captivity but they have stricken hands with their idols 9 That they will abolish the thing that thou with thy mouth hast ordained and destroy thine inheritance and stop the mouth of them that praise thee and quench the glory of thy house and of thine altar 10 And open the mouths of the heathen to set forth the praises of the † Gr. vain things idols and to magnifie a fleshly king for ever 11 O Lord give not thy sceptre unto them that † Gr. be not be nothing and let them not laugh at our fall but turn their device upon themselves and make him an example that hath begun this against us 12 Remember O Lord make thy self known in time of our affliction and give me boldness O King of the ‖ Or gods nations and Lord of all power 13 Give me eloquent speech in my mouth before the lion turn his heart to hate him that fighteth against us that there may be an end of him and of all that are like-minded to him 14 But deliver us with thine hand and help me that am desolate and which have no other helper but thee 15 Thou knowest all things O Lord thou knowest that I hate the glory of the unrighteous and abhor the bed of the uncircumcised and of † Gr. every stranger all the heathen 16 Thou knowest my necessity for I abhor the signe of my † Gr. pride high estate which is upon mine head in the days wherein I shew my self and that I abhor it as a menstruous rag and that I wear it not when I am † Gr. quiet or private private by my self 17 And that thine hand-maid hath not eaten at Amans table and that I have not greatly esteemed the kings feast nor drunk the wine of the drink-offerings 18 Neither had thine hand maid any joy since the day † Gr. of my change that I was brought hither to this present but in thee O Lord God of Abraham 19 O thou mighty God above all hear the voice of the forlorn and deliver us out of the hands of the mischievous and deliver me out of my fear CHAP. XV. 6 Esther cometh into the kings presence 7 He looketh angerly and she fainteth 8 The king doth take her up and comfort her ANd upon the third day when she had ended her prayer she laid away her mourning garments and ●●t on her glorious apparel 2 And being gloriously adorned after she had called upon God who is the beholder and Saviour of all things she took two maids with her 3 And upon the one she leaned as carrying her self ‖ Or delicath daintily 4 And the other followed bearing up her train 5 And she was ‖ Or rose-coloured ruddy through the perfection of her beauty and her countenance was cheerful and ‖ Or as amiable or smiline very amiable but her heart was in anguish for fear 6 Then having passed through all the doors she stood before the king who sat upon his royal throne and was clothed with all his robes of majesty all glittering with gold and precious stones and he was very dreadful 7 Then lifting up his countenance that hone with majesty he looked very fiercely upon her and the queen fell down and was pale and fainted and bowed her self upon the head of the maid that went ‖ Or with her or by her before her 8 Then God changed the spirit of the king into mildness who † Gr. in an agony in a fear leaped from his throne and took her in his arms till she came to her self again and comforted her with loving words and said unto her 9 Esther what is the matter I am thy brother be of good cheer 10 Thou shalt not die though our commandment be ‖ Or as well thie● as mine general come near 11 And so he held up his golden sceptre and laid it upon her neck 12 And embraced her and said Speak unto me 13 Then she said unto him I saw thee my lord as an angel of God and my heart was troubled for fear of thy majesty 14 For wonderful art thou lord and thy countenance is full of grace 15 And as she was speaking ‖ Or she fell in a swoon she fell down for faintness 16 Then the king was troubled and all his servants comforted her CHAP. XVI 1 The letter of Artaxerxes 10 wherein be taxeth Aman 17 and revoketh the decree procured by Aman to destroy the Jews 22 and commandeth the day of their deliverance to be kept holy THe great king Artaxerxes unto the princes and governours of an hundred and seven and twenty provinces from India unto Ethiopia Joseph Ant. l. 11. c. 6. and unto all ‖ Or well-affected to our state our faithful subjects greeting 2 Many the more often they are honoured with the great bounty of † Gr. their benefactors their gracious princes the more proud they are waxen 3 And endeavour to hurt not our subjects onely but not being able to bear abundance do take in hand to practise also against those that do them good 4 And take not onely thankfulness away from among men but also lifted up with the glorious words of ‖ Or needy lewd persons ‖ Or that never casted prosperity that were never good they think to escape the justice of God that seeth all things and hateth evil 5 Oftentimes also fair speech ‖ Or of our friends put in trust to manage the affairs of those that are put in trust to manage their friends affairs hath caused many that are in authority to be partakers of innocent bloud and hath enwrapped them in remediless calamities 6 Beguiling with the falshood and deceit of their lewd disposition the innocency and goodness of princes 7 Now ye may see this as we have declared not so much by ancient histories as ye may if ye search what hath been wickedly done of late through the pestilent behaviour of them that are unworthily placed in authority 8 And we must take care for the time to come that our kingdom may be quiet and
Agarenes that seek wisdom upon earth the merchants of Meran and of Theman the ‖ Or expounders authours of sables and searchers out of understanding none of these have known the way of wisdom or remember her paths 24 O Israel how great is the house of God and how large is the place of his possession 25 Great and hath none end high and unmeasurable 26 There were the giants famous from the beginning that were of so great stature and so expert in war 27 Those did not the Lord choose neither gave he the way of knowledge unto them 28 But they were destroyed because they had no wisdom and perished through their own foolishness 29 Who hath gone up into heaven and taken her and brought her down from the clouds 30 Who hath gone over the sea and found her and will bring her for pure gold 31 No man knoweth her way nor thinketh of her path 32 But he that knoweth all things knoweth her and hath found her out with his understanding he that prepared the earth for evermore hath filled it with fourfooted beasts 33 He that sendeth forth light and it goeth calleth it again and it obeyeth him with fear 34 The stars shined in their watches and rejoyced when he called them they say Here we be and so with cheerfulness they shewed light unto him that made them 35 This is our God and there shall none other be accounted of in comparision of him 36 He hath found out all the way of knowledge and hath given it unto Jacob his servant and to Israel his beloved 37 * Prov. 8.31 Joh. 1.14 Afterward did he shew himself upon earth and conversed with men CHAP. IV. 1 The book of commandments is that wisdom which was commanded in the former chapter 25 The Jews are moved to patience and to hope for the deliverance THis is the book of the commandments of God and the law that endureth for ever all they that keep it shall come to life but such as leave it shall die 2 Turn thee O Jacob and take hold of it walk † Gr. to the shining before the light thereof in the presence of the light thereof that thou mayest be illuminated 3 Give not thine honour to another nor the things that are profitable unto thee to a strange nation 4 O Israel happy are we for things that are pleasing to God are made known unto us 5 Be of good cheer my people the memorial of Israel 6 Ye were sold to the nations not for your destruction but because ye moved God to wrath ye were delivered unto the enemies 7 For ye provoked him that made you by * 1 Cor 10.20 sacrificing unto devils and not to God 8 Ye have forgotten the everlasting God that brought you up and ye have grieved Jerusalem that nursed you 9 For when she saw the wrath of God coming upon you she said Hearken O ye that dwell about Sion God hath brought upon me great mourning 10 For I saw the captivity of my sons and daughters which the Everlasting brought upon them 11 With joy did I nourish them but sent them away with weeping and mourning 12 Let no man rejoyce over me a widow and forsaken of many who for the sins of my children am left desolate because they departed from the law of God 13 They knew not his statutes nor walked in the ways of his commandments nor trode in the paths ‖ Or of his discipline in righteousness of discipline in his righteousness 14 Let them that dwell about Sion come and remember ye the captivity of my sons and daughters which the Evelasting hath brought upon them 15 For he hath brought a nation upon them from far a shameless nation and of a strange language who neither reverenced old man nor pitied childe 16 These have carried away the dear-beloved children of the widow and left her that was alone desolate without daughters 17 But what can I help you 18 For he that brought these plagues upon you will deliver you from the hands of your enemies 19 Go your way O my children go your way for I am left desolate 20 I have put off the clothing of ‖ Or prosperity peace and put upon me the sackcloth of my prayer I will cry unto the Everlasting ‖ Or in the time of mine affliction * Ps 116.2 137.7 in my days 21 Be of good cheer O my children cry unto the Lord and he shall deliver you from the power and hand of the enemies 22 For my hope is in the Everlasting that he will save you and joy is come unto me from the holy One because of the mercy which shall soon come unto you from the Everlasting our Saviour 23 For I sent you out with mourning and weeping But God will give you to me again with joy and gladness for ever 24 Like as now the neighbours of Sion have seen your captivity so shall they see shortly your salvation from our God which shall come upon you with great glory and brightness of the Everlasting 25 My children suffer patiently the wrath that is come upon you from God for thine enemy hath persecuted thee but shortly thou shalt see his destruction and shalt tread upon his neck 26 ‖ Or My darlings My delicate ones have gone rough ways and were taken away as a flock caught of the enemies 27 Be of good comfort O my children and cry unto God for you shall be remembred of him that brought these things upon you 28 For as it was your minde to go astray from God so being returned seek him ten times more 29 For he that hath brought these plagues upon you shall bring you everlasting joy again with your salvation 30 Take a good heart O Jerusalem for he that gave thee that name will comfort thee 31 Miserable are they that afflicted thee and rejoyced at thy fall 32 Miserable are the cities which thy children served miserable is she that received thy sons 33 For as she rejoyced at thy ruine and was glad of thy fall so shall she be grieved for her own desolation 34 For I will take away the rejoycing of her great multitude and her pride shall be turned into mourning 35 For fire shall come upon her from the Everlasting long to endure and she shall be inhabited of devils for a great time 36 O Jerusalem look about thee towards the east and behold the joy that cometh unto thee from God 37 Lo thy sons come whom thou sentest away they come gathered together from the east to the west by the word of the holy One rejoycing in the glory of God CHAP. V. 1 Jerusalem is moved to rejoyce 5 and to behold their return out of captivity with glory PUt off O Jerusalem the garment of thy mourning and affliction and put on the comeliness of the glory that cometh from God for ever 2 Cast about thee a double garment of the righteousness which cometh from God
they went unto the king and said How long will it be ere thou execute judgement and avenge our brethren 23 We have been willing to serve thy father and do as he would have us and to obey his commandments 24 For which cause they of our nation besiege the towre and are alienated from us moreover as many of us as they could light on they slew and spoiled our inheritance 25 Neither have they stretched out their hand against us onely but also against all their borders 26 And behold this day are they besieging the towre at Jerusalem to take it the sanctuary also and Bethsura have they fortified 27 Wherefore if thou dost not prevent them quickly they will do greater things then these neither shalt thou be able to rule them 28 Now when the king heard this he was angry and gathered together all his friends and the captains of his army and those that had charge of the horse 29 There came also unto him from other kingdoms and from the isles of the sea bands of hired souldiers 30 So that the number of his army was an hundred thousand footmen and twenty thousand hors-men and two and thirty elephants exercised in battel 31 These went through Idumea and pitched against Bethsura which they assaulted many days making engines of war but they of Bethsura came out and burnt them with fire and sought valiantly 32 Upon this Judas removed from the towre and pitched in Bathzacharias over against the kings camp 33 Then the king rising very early marched fiercely with his host toward Bathzacharias where his armies made them ready to battel and sounded the trumpets 34 And to the end they might provoke the elephants to fight they shewed them the bloud of grapes and mulberries 35 Moreover they divided the beasts among the armies and for every elephant they appointed a thousand men armed with coats of male and with helmets of brass on their heads and besides this for every beast were ordained five hundred hors-men of the best 36 These were ready at every occasion wheresoever the beast was and whithersoever the beast went they went also neither departed they from him 37 And upon the beasts there were strong towres of wood which covered every one of them and were girt fast unto them with devices there were also upon every one two and thirty strong men that sought upon them besides the Indian that ruled him 38 As for the remnant of the hors-men they set them on this side and that side at the two parts of the host ‖ Or st●●ring them up being compassed with the ranks or defended with the v●●leys giving them signs what to do and being harnessed all over amidst the ranks 39 Now when the sun shone upon the shields of gold and brass the mountains glistred therewith and shined like lamps of fire 40 So part of the kings army being spread upon the high mountains part on the valleys below they marched on safely in order 41 Wherfore all that heard the noise of their multitude and the marching of the company and the rattling of the harness were moved for the army was very great and mighty 42 Then Judas and his host drew neat and entred into battel and there were slain of the kings army six hundred men 43 ¶ Eleazar also surnamed Savaran perceiving that one of the beasts armed with royal harness was higher then all the rest and supposing that the king was upon him 44 Put himself in jeopardy to the end he might deliver his people and get him a perpetual name 45 Wherefore he ran upon him couragiously through the midst of the battel slaying on the right hand and on the left ‖ Or so that it cut them in p●●ces so that they were divided from him on both sides 46 Which done he crept under the elephant and thrust him under and slew him whereupon the elephant fell down upon him and there he died 47 Howbeit the rest of the Jews seeing the strength of the king and the violence of his forces turned away from them 48 ¶ Then the kings army went up to Jerusalem to meet them and the king pitched his tents ‖ Or in Judea against Judea and against mount Sion 49 But with them that were in Bethsura he made peace ‖ Add out of Josephus and they yeelded themselves for they came out of the city because they had no victuals there to endure the siege it being a year of rest to the land 50 So the king took Bethsura and set a garison there to keep it 51 As for the sanctuary he besieged it many days ‖ Or made there mounts for shot and set there artillery with engines and instruments to cast fire and stones and pieces to cast darts and slings 52 Whereupon ‖ Or the Jews they also made engines against their engines and held them battel a long season 53 Yet at the last their vessels being without victuals for that it was the seventh year and they in Judea that were delivered from the Gentiles had eaten up the residue of the store 54 There were but a few left in the sanctuary because the famine did so prevail against them that they were fain to disperse themselves every man to his own place 55 At that time Lysias heard say that Philip whom Antiochus the king whiles he lived had appointed to bring up his son Antiochus that he might be king 56 Was returned out of Persia and Media and the kings host also the went with him that he sought to take unto him the ruling of the affairs 57 Wherefore he went in all haste and said to the king and the captains of the host and the company we decay daily and our victuals are but small and the place we lay siege unto is strong and the affairs of the kingdom lie upon us 58 Now therefore let us † Gr. give 〈◊〉 be friends with these men and make peace with them and with all their nation 59 And covenant with them that they shall live after their laws as they did before for they are therefore displeased and have done all these things because we abolished their laws 60 So the king and the princes were content wherefore he sent unto them to make peace and they accepted thereof 61 Also the king and the princes made an oath unto them whereupon they went out of the strong hold 62 Then the king entred into mount Sion but when he saw the strength of the place he brake his oath that he had made and gave commandment to pull down the wall round about 63 Afterward departed he in all haste and returned unto Antiochia where he found Philip to be master of the city So he sought against him and took the city by force CHAP. VII 1 Antiochus is slain and Demetrius reigneth in his stead 5 Alcimus would be high priest and complaineth of Judas to the king 16 He s●ayeth threescore Assideans 43 Nicanor is slain
CHAP. XV. 4 Antiochus desireth leave to pass through Judea and granteth great honours to Simon and the Jews 16 The Romanes write to divers kings and nations to favour the Jews 27 Antiochus quarrelleth with Simon 38 and sendeth some to annoy Judea MOreover Antiochus son of Demetrius the king sent setters from the isles of the sea unto Simon the priest and prince of the Jews and to all the people 2 The contents whereof were these King Antiochus to Simon the high priest prince of his nation and to the people of the Jews greeting 3 Forasmuch as certain pestilent men have usurped the kingdom of our fathers and my purpose is to challenge it again that I may restore it to the old estate and to that end have gathered a multitude of forein souldiers together and prepared ships of war 4 My meaning also being to go through the countrey that I may be avenged of them that have destroyed it and made many cities in the kingdom desolate 5 Now therefore I confirm unto thee all the oblations with the kings before me granted thee and whatsoever gifts besides they granted 6 I give thee leave also to coyn money for thy countrey with thine own stamp 7 And as concerning Jerusalem and the sanctuary let them be free and all the armour that thou hast made and fortresses that thou hast built and keepest in thine hands let them remain unto thee 8 And if anything be or shall be owing to the king let it be forgiven thee from this time forth for evermore 9 Furthermore when we have obtained our kingdom we will honour thee and thy nation and thy temple with great honour so that your honour shall be known throughout the world 10 In the hundred threescore and fourteenth year went Antiochus into the land of his fathers at which time all the forces came together unto him so that few were left with Tryphon 11 Wherefore being pursued by king Antiochus he fled unto Dora which lieth by the sea-side 12 For he saw that troubles came upon him all at once and that his forces had forsaken him 13 Then camped Antiochus against Dora having with him an hundred and twenty thousand men of war eight thousand hors-men 14 And when he had compassed the city round about and joyned ships close to the town on the sea side he vexed the city by land and by sea neither suffered he any to go out or in 15 In the mean season came Numenius and his company from Rome having letters to the kings and countreys wherein were written these things 16 Lucius Consul of the Romanes unto king Ptolemee greeting 17 The Jews ambassadours our friends and confederates came unto us to renew the old friendship and league being sent from Simon the high priest and from the people of the Jews 18 And they brought a shield of gold of a thousand pound 19 We thought it good therefore to write unto the kings and countreys that they should do them no harm nor fight against them their cities or countries nor yet aid their enemies against them 20 It seemed also good to us to receive the shield of them 21 If therefore there be any pestilent fellows that have fled from their countrey unto you deliver them unto Simon the high priest that he may punish them according to their own law 22 The same things wrote he likewise unto Demetrius the king and Attalus to ‖ Or Arathes Ariarathes and Arsaces 23 And to all the countreys and to ‖ Or Sampsames Sampsames and the Lacedemonians and to Delus and Myndus and Sicyon and Caria and Samos and Pamphylia and Lycia and Halicarnassus and Rhodus and ‖ Or Basilis Phaselis and Cos and Side and Aradus and Gortyna and Cnidus and Cyprus and Cyrene 24 And the copy hereof they wrote to Simon the high priest 25 So Antiochus the king camped against Dora the second day † Or. bringing his for●●s to it assaulting it continually and making engines by which means he shut up Tryphon that he could neither go out nor in 26 At that time Simon sent him two thousand chosen men to aid him silver also and gold and much armour 27 Nevertheless he would not receive them but brake all the covenants which he had made with him afore became strange unto him 28 Furthermore he sent unto him Athenobius one of his friends to commune with him and say You withhold Joppe and Gazara with the towre that is in Jerusalem which are cities of my realm 29 The borders thereof ye have wasted and done great hurt in the land and got the dominion of many places within my kingdom 30 Now therefore deliver the cities which ye have taken and the tributes of the places whereof ye have gotten dominion ‖ Or. except the borders c. without the borders of Judea 31 Or else give me for them five hundred talents of silver and for the harm that you have done and the tributes of the cities other five hundred talents if not we will come and ‖ Or subdue you in fight fight against you 32 So Athenobius the kings friend came to Jerusalem and when he saw the glory of Simon and the cupboard of gold silver plate his great attendance he was astonished and told him the kings message 33 Then answered Simon and said unto him We have neither taken other mens land nor holden that which appertaineth to others but the inheritance of our fathers which our enemies had wrongfully in possession a certain time 34 Wherefore we having opportunity hold the inheritance of our fathers 35 And whereas thou demandest Joppe and Gazara albeit they did great harm unto the people in our countrey yet will we give an hundred talents for them Hereunto Athenobius answered him not a word 36 But returned in a rage to the king and made report unto him of these speeches and of the glory of Simon and of all that he had seen whereupon the king was exceeding wroth 37 In the mean time fled Tryphon by ship unto Orthosias 38 Then the king made Cendebeus captain of the sea-coast and gave him an host of footmen and hors-men 39 And commanded him to remove his host toward Judea also he commanded him to build up Cedron to fortifie the gates to war against the people but as for the king himself he pursued Tryphon 40 So Cendebeus came to Jamnia began to provoke the people to invade Judea and to take the people prisoners and slay them 41 And when he had built up Cedron he set hors-men there and an host of footmen to the end that issuing out they might make outrodes upon the ways of Judea as the king had commanded him CHAP. XVI 3 Judas and John prevail against the forces sent by Antiochus 11 The captain of Jericho inviteth Simon and two of his sons into his castle and there treacherously murdereth them 19 John is sought for 22 and escapeth and
stone me 33 The Jews answered him saying For a good work we stone thee not but for blasphemy and because that thou being a man makest thy self God 34 Jesus answered them * Psal 8● 6 Is it not written in your law I said Ye are gods 35 If he called them gods unto whom the word of God came and the scripture cannot be broken 36 Say ye of him whom the Father hath sanctified and sent into the world Thou blasphemest because I said I am the Son of God 37 If I do not the works of my Father beleeve me not 38 But if I do though ye beleeve not me beleeve the works that ye may know and beleeve that the Father is in me and I in him 39 Therefore they sought again to take him but he escaped out of their hand 40 And went away again beyond Jordan into the place where John at first baptized and there he abode 41 And many reforted unto him and said John did no miracle but all things that John spake of this man were true 42 And many beleeved on him there CHAP. XI 1 Christ raiseth Lazarus four days buried 4● Many Jews beleeve 47 The b●●h priests and Pharisees gather a council against Christ 49 Caiaphas prophesieth 54 Jesus hid himself 55 At the pass-over they enquire after him and lay wait for him NOw a certain man was sick named Lazarus of Bethany the town of Mary and her sister Martha 2 * Mat. 26.7 It was that Mary which ano●nted the Lord with ointment and wiped his feet with her hair whose brother Lazarus was sick 3 Therefore his sisters sent unto him saying Lord behold he whom thou lovest is sick 4 When Jesus heard that he said This sickness is not unto death but for the glory of God that the Son of God might be glorified thereby 5 Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus 6 When he had heard therefore that he was sick he abode two days still in the same place where he was 7 Then after that saith he to his disciples Let us go into Judea again 8 His disciples say unto him Master the Jews of late sought to stone thee and goest thou thither again 9 Jesus answered Are there not twelve hours in the day If any man walk in the day he stumbleth not because he seeth the light of this world 10 But if a man walk in the night he stumbleth because there is no light in him 11 These things said he and after that he saith unto them Our friend Lazarus sleepeth but I go that I may awake him out of sleep 12 Then said his disciples Lord if he sleep he shall do well 13 Howbeit Jesus spake of his death but they thought that he had spoken of taking of rest in sleep 14 Then said Jesus unto them plainly Lazarus is dead 15 And I am glad for your sakes that I was not there to the intent ye may beleeve nevertheless let us go unto him 16 Then said Thomas which is called Didymus unto his fellow-disciples Let us also go that we may die with him 17 Then when Jesus came he sound that he had lien in the grave four days already 18 Now Bethany was nigh unto Jerusalem ‖ That is about two miles about fifteen furlongs off 19 And many of the Jews came to Martha and Mary to comfort them concerning their brother 20 Then Martha assoon as she heard that Jesus was coming went and met him but Mary sat still in the house 21 Then said Martha unto Jesus Lord if thou hadst been here my brother had not died 22 But I know that even now whatsoever thou wilt ask of God God will give it thee 23 Jesus saith unto her Thy brother shall rise again 24 Martha saith unto him * Luk. 14.14 Chap. 5.29 I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day 25 Jesus said unto her I am the resurrection and the * Ch. ● 35 life he that that she arose quickly and came unto him 30 Now Jesus was not yet come into the town but was in that place where Martha met him 31 The Jews then which were with her in the house and comforted her when they saw Mary that she rose up hastily and went out followed her saving She goeth unto the grave to weep there 32 Then when Mary was come where Jesus was and saw him she fell down at his feet saying unto him Lord if thou hadst been here my brother had not died 33 When Jesus therefore saw her weeping and the Jews also weeping which came with her he groaned in the spirit and † Gr. be troubled himself was troubled 34 And said Where have ye laid him They say unto him Lord come and see 35 J●sus wept 36 Then said the Jews Behold how he loved him 37 And some of them said Could not this man * Chap. 9.6 which opened the eyes of the blinde have caused that even this man should not have died 38 Jesus therefore again groaning in himself cometh to the grave It was a cave and a stone lay upon it 39 Jesus said Take ye away the stone Martha the sister of him that was dead saith unto him Lord by this time he stinketh for he hath been dead four days 40 Jesus saith unto her Said I not unto thee that if thou wouldest beleeve thou shouldest see the glory of God 41 Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead was said And Jesus list up his eyes and said Father I thank thee that thou hast heard me 42 And I knew that thou hearest me always but because of the people which stand by I said it that they may beleeve that thou hast sent me 43 And when he thus had spoken he cried with a loud voice Lazarus come forth 44 And he that was dead came sorth bound hand and foot with grave-clothes and his face was bound about with a napkin Jesus saith unto them Loose him and let him go 45 Then many of the Jews which came to Mary and had seen the things which Jesus did beleeved on him 46 But some of them went their ways to the Pharisees and told them what things Jesus had done 47 ¶ Then gathered the chief priests and the Pharisees a council and said What do we for this man doeth many miracles 48 If we let him thus alone all men will beleeve on him and the Romans shall come and take away both our place and nation 49 And one of them named Caiaphas being the high

XXVIII 1 Paul after his shipwrack is kindly entertained of the Barbarians 3 The viper on his hand hurteth him not 8 He healeth many diseases in the island 11 They depart towards Rome 17 He declareth to the Jews the cause of his coming 24 After his preaching some were perswaded and some beleeved not 30 Yet he preacheth there two years ANd when they were escaped then they knew that the island was called Melita 2 And the barbarous people shewed us no little kindness for they kindled a fire and received us every one because of the present rain and because of the cold 3 And when Paul had gathered a bundle of sticks and laid them on the fire there came a viper out of the heat and fastned on his hand 4 And when the Barbarians law the venemous beast hang on his hand they said among themselves No doubt this man is a murderer whom though he hath escaped the sea yet vengeance suffereth not to live 5 And he shook off the beast into the fire and felt no harm 6 Howbeit they looked when he should have swoln or faln down dead suddenly but after they had looked a great while and saw no harm come to him they changed their minds and said that he was a God 7 In the same quarters were possessions of the chief man of the island whose name was Publius who received us and lodged us three days courteously 8 And it came to pass that the father of Publius lay sick of a fever and of a bloudy flux to whom Paul entred in and prayed and laid his hands on him and healed him 9 So when this was done others also which had diseases in the island came and were healed 10 Who also honoured us with many honours and when we departed they laded us with such things as were necessary 11 And after three moneths we departed in a ship of Alexandria which had wintred in the isle whose signe was Castor and Pollux 12 And landing at Syracuse we tarried there three days 13 And from thence we set a compass and came to Rhegium and after one day the south-wind blew and we came the next day to Puteo●● 14 Where we found brethren and were desired to tarry with them seven days and so we went toward Rome 15 And from thence when the brethren heard of us they came to meet us as far as Appii-forum and the Three taverns whom when Paul saw he thanked God and took courage 16 And when we came to Rome the centurion delivered the prisoners to the captain of the guard but Paul was suffered to dwell by himself with a souldier that kept him 17 And it came to pass that after three days Paul called the chief of the Jews together And when they were come together he said unto them Men and brethren though I have committed nothing against the people or customs of our fathers yet was I delivered prisoner from Jerusalem into the hands of the Romans 18 Who when they had examined me would have let me go because there was no cause of death in me 19 But when the Jews spake against it I was constrained to appeal unto Cesar not that I had ought to accuse my nation of 20 For this cause therefore have I called for you to see you and to speak with you because that for the hope of Israel I am bound with this chain 21 And they said unto him We neither received letters out of Judea concerning thee neither any of the brethren that came shewed or spake any harm of thee 22 But we desire to hear of thee what thou thinkest for as concerning this sect we know that every where it is spoken against 23 And when they had appointed him a day there came many to him into his lodging to whom he expounded and testified the kingdom of God perswading them concerning Jesus both out of the law of Moses and out of the prophets from morning till evening 24 And some beleeved the things which were spoken and some beleeved not 25 And when they agreed not among themselves they departed after that Paul had spoken one word Well spake the holy Ghost by Esaias the prophet unto our fathers 26 Saying * Isa 6.9 Mat. 13.14 Mar. 4.12 Luk. 8.10 Joh. 12.40 Rom. 11.8 Go unto this people and say Hearing ye shall hear and shall not understand and seeing ye shall see and not perceive 27 For the heart of this people is waxed gross and their ears are dull of hearing and their eyes have they closed lest they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears and understand with their heart and should be converted and I should heal them 28 Be it known therefore unto you that the salvation of God is sent unto the Gentiles and that they will hear it 29 And when he had said these words the Jews departed and had great reasoning among themselves 30 And Paul dwelt two whole years in his own hired house and received all that came in unto him 31 Preaching the kingdom of God and teaching those things which concern the Lord Jesus Christ with all confidence no man forbidding him ¶ The epistle of PAUL the Apostle to the ROMANS CHAP.
