so that no man did lift up his head but these are come to fray them to cast out the horns of the Gentiles which lift up their horn over the land of Judah to scatter it CHAP. III. 1Vnder the type of Joshua the restauration of the church 8 Christ the Branch is promised ANd he shewed me Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of the LORD and ‖ That is an adversary Satan standing at his right hand †Heb. to â—ebis adversary to resist him 2 And the LORD said unto Satan * Jude 9. The LORD rebuke thee O Satan even the LORD that hath chosen Jerusalem rebuke thee is not this a brand pluckt out of the fire 3 Now Joshua was clothed with filthy garments and stood before the angel 4 And he answered and spake unto those that stood before him saying Take away the filthy garments from him And unto him he said Behold I have caused thine iniquity to pass from thee and I will clothe thee with change of raiment 5 And I said Let them set a fair mitre upon his head so they set a fair mitre upon his head and clothed him with garments and the angel of the LORD stood by 6 And the angel of the LORD protested unto Joshua saying 7 Thus saith the LORD of hosts If thou wilt walk in my ways and if thou wilt keep my ‖ Or ordinance charge then thou shalt also judge my house and shalt also keep my courts and I will give thee †Heb. walks places to walk among these that stand by 8 Hear now O Joshua the high priest thou and thy fellows that sit before thee for they are †Heb. men of wonder men wondred at for behold I will bring forth my servant the * Isa 11.1 Jer. 23.5 and 33.15 Ch. 6.12 Luk. 1.78 BRANCH 9 For behold the stone that I have laid before Joshua upon one stone shall be seven eyes behold I will engrave the graving thereof saith the LORD of hosts I will remove the iniquity of that land in one day 10 In that day saith the LORD of hosts shall ye call every man his neighbour under the vine and under the fig-tree CHAP. the wilderness of Paran to Kadesh and brought back word unto them and unto all the congregation and shewed them the fruit of the land 27 And they told him and said We came unto the land whither thou sentest us and surely it floweth with * Exod. 33.3 milk and honey and this is the fruit of it 28 Nevertheless the people be strong that dwell in the land and the cities are walled and very great and moreover we saw the children of Anak there 29 The Amalekites dwell in the land of the south and the Hittites and the Jebusites and the Amorites dwell in the mountains and the Canaanites dwell by the sea and by the coast of Jordan 30 And Caleb stilled the people before Moses and said Let us go up at once and possess it for we are well able to overcome it 31 But the men that went up with him said We be not able to go up against the people for they are stronger then we 32 And they brought up an evil report of the land which they had searched unto the children of Israel saying The land through which we have gone to search it is a land that eateth up the inhabitants thereof and all the people that we saw in it are †Heb. men of statures men of great stature 33 And there we saw the giants the sons of Anak which come of the giants and we were in our own sight as grashoppers and so we were in their sight CHAP. XCVIII 1 The psalmist exhorteth the Jews 4 the Gentiles 7 and all the creatures to praise God ¶ A psalm O Sing unto the LORD a new song for he hath done marvellous things his right hand and his holy arm hath gotten him the victory 2 * Isa 52.10 The LORD hath made known his salvation his righteousness hath he ‖ Or revealed openly shewed in the sight of the heathen 3 He hath remembred his mercy and his truth toward the house of Israel all the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God 4 Make a joyful noise unto the LORD all the earth make a loud noise and rejoyce and ring praise 5 Sing unto the LORD with the harp with the harp and the voice of a psalm 6 With trumpets and sound of cornet make a joyful noise before the LORD the King 7 Let the sea roar and the fulness thereof the world and they that dwell therein 8 Let the flouds clap their hands let the hills be joyful together 9 Before the LORD * Ps 96.13 for he cometh to judge the earth with righteousness shall he judge the world and the people with equity PSAL. XCIX 1 The prophet setting forth the kingdom of God in Zion 5 exhorteth all by the example of forefathers to worship God at his holy hill THe LORD reigneth let the people tremble he sitteth between the cherubims let the earth †Heb. stagger be moved 2 The LORD is great in Zion and he is high above all people 3 Let them praise thy great and terrible name for it is holy 4 The kings strength also loveth judgement thou dost establish equity thou executest judgement and righteousness in Jacob. 5 Exalt ye the LORD our God and worship at his footstool for ‖ Or it is holy he is holy 6 Moses and Aaron among his priests and Samuel among them that call upon his name they called upon the LORD he answered them 7 He spake unto them in the cloudy pillar they kept his testimomes and the ordinance that he gave them 8 Thou answeredst them O LORD our God thou wast a God that forgavest them though thou tookest vengeance of their inventions 9 Exalt the LORD our God and worship at his holy hill for the LORD our God is holy PSAL. C. 1 An exhortation to praise God cheerfully 3 for his greatness 4 and for his power ¶ A psalm of ‖ Or thankâ—giving praise MAke a joyful noise unto the LORD †Heb. all the earth all ye lands 2 Serve the LORD with gladness come before his presence with singing 3 Know ye that the LORD he is God it is he that hath made us ‖ Or and his we are and not we our selves we are his people the sheep of his pasture 4 Enter into his gates with thanksgiving and into his courts with praise be thankful unto him and bless his name 5 Fort the LORD is good his mercy is everlasting and his truth endureth †Heb. to generation and generation to all generations PSAL. David maketh a vow and profession of godliness ¶ A psalm of David I Will sing of mercy and judgement unto thee O LORD will I sing 2 I will behave my self wisely in a perfect way O when wilt thou come unto me I will walk within my house with a perfect heart 3 I will set no †Heb. thing of Belial wicked thing before mine eyes I hate the work of them that turn aside it shall not cleave to me 4 A froward heart shall depart from me I will not know a wicked person 5 Whoso privily slandereth his neighbour him will I cut off him that hath an high look and a proud heart will not I suffer 6 Mine eyes shall be upon the faithful of the land that they may dwell with me he that walketh ‖ Or perfect in the way in a perfect way he shall serve me 7 He that worketh
〈◊〉 from the south 4 They wandred in the wilderness in a solitary way they found no city to dwell in 5 Hungry and thirsty their soul sainted in them 6 Then they cried unto the LORD in their trouble and he delivered them out of their distresses 7 And he led them forth by the right way that they might go to a city of habitation 8 Oh that meâ— would praise the LORD for his goodness and for his wonderful works to the children of men 9 For he satisfieth the longing soul and filleth the hungry soul with goodness 10 Such as sit in darkness and in the shadow of death being bound in affliction and iron 11 Because they rebelled against the words of God and contemned the counsel of the most High 12 Therefore he brought down their heart with labour they fell down and there was none to help 13 Then they cried unto the LORD in their trouble and he saved them out of their distresses 14 He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death and brake their bands in sunder 15 Oh that men would praise the LORD for his goodness and for his wonderful works to the children of men 16 For he hath broken the gates of brass and cut the bars of iron in sunder 17 Fools because of their transgression and because of their iniquities are afflicted 18 * Job â—3 20. Their soul abhorreth all manner of meat and they draw near unto the gates of death 19 Then they cry unto the LORD in their trouble he saveth them out of their distresses 20 He sent his word and healed them and delivered them from their destructions 21 Oh that men would praise the LORD for his goodness and for his wonderful works to the children of men 22 And let them sacrifice the sacrifices of thanksgiving and declare his works with †Heb. singing rejoycing 23 They that go down to the sea in ships that do business in great waters 24 These see the works of the LORD and his wonders in the deep 25 For he commandeth and †Heb. maketh to stand raiseth the stormy wind which sitteth up the waves thereof 26 They mount up to the heaven they do down again to the depths their soul is melted because of trouble 27 They reel to and fro and stagger like a drunken man and †Heb. act their wisdom is swallowed up are at their wits end 28 Then they cry unto the LORD in their trouble and he bringeth them out of their distresses 29 He maketh the storm a calm so that the waves thereof are still 30 Then are they glad because they be quiet so he bringeth them unto their desired haven 31 Oh that men would praise the LORD for his goodness and for his wonderful works to the children of men 32 Let them exalt him also in the congregation of the people and praise him in the assembly of the elders 33 He turneth rivers into a wilderness and the water-springs into dry ground 34 A fruitful land into †Heb. saltness barrenness for the wickedness of them that dwell therein 35 * Isa 41.18 He turneth the wilderness into a standing water and dry ground into water-springs 36 And there he maketh the hungry to dwell that they may prepare a city for habitation 37 And sowe the fields and plant vineyards which may yeeld fruits of increase 38 He blesseth them also so that they are multiplied greatly and suffereth not their cattel to decrease 39 Again they are minished and brought low through oppression affliction and sorrow 40 * Job 12.21 He poureth contempt upon princes and causeth them to wander in the ‖ Or void place wilderness where there is no way 41 * 1 Sam. 2.8 Psal 113.7 8. CVIII 1 David encourageth himself to praise God 5 He prayeth for Gods assistance according to his promise 11 His confidence in Gods help ¶ A song or psalm of David O God my heart is fixed I will sing and give praise even with my glory 2 Awake psaltery and harp I my self will awake early 3 I will praise thee O LORD among the people and I will sing praises unto thee among the nations 4 For thy mercy is great above the heavens and thy truth reacheth unto the ‖ Or skiâ—s clouds 5 Be thou exalted O God above the heavens and thy glory above all the earth 6 * Psal 60 5. That thy beloved may be delivered save with thy right hand and answer me 7 God hath spoken in his holiness I will rejoyce I will divide Shechem and mete out the valley of Succoth 8 Gilead is mine Manasseh is mine Ephraim also is the strength of mine head Judah is my law-giver 9 Moab is my wash-pot over Edom will I cast out my shoe over Philistia will I triumph 10 Who will bring me into the strong city who will lead me into Edom 11 Wâ—lt not thou O God who hast cast us off and wilt not thou O God go forth with our hosts 12 Give us help from trouble for vain is the help of man 13 Through God we shall do valiantly for he it is that shall tread down our enemies PSAL. CIX 1 David complaining of his slanderous enemies under the person of Judas devoteth them 16 He sheweth their sin 21 Complaining of his own misery he prayeth for help 30 He promiseth thankfulness ¶ To the chief musician A psalm of David HOld not thy peace O God of my praise 2 For the mouth of the wicked and the †Heb. mouth of deceit mouth of the deceitful †Heb. have opened themselves are opened against me they have spoken against me with a lying tongue 3 They compassed me about also with words of hatred and sought against me without a cause 4 For my love they are my adversaries but I give my self unto prayer 5 And they have rewarded me evil for good and hatred for my love 6 Set thou a wicked man over him and let ‖ Or an adversary Satan stand at his right hand 7 When he shall be judged let him †Heb. go out guilty or wicked be condemned and let his prayer become sin 8 Let his days be few and * Act. 1.20 let another take his ‖ Or charge office 9 Let his children be fatherless and his wife a widow 10 Let his children be continually vagabonds and beg let them seek their bread also out of their desolate places 11 Let the extortioner catch all that he hath and let the stranger spoil his labour 12 Let there be none to extend mercy unto him neither let there be any

LX. 1 The glory of the church in the abundant access of the Gentiles 15 and the great blessings after a short affliction ARise ‖ Or be enlightned for thy light cometh shine for thy light is come and the glory of the LORD is risen upon thee 2 For behold the darkness shall cover the earth and gross darkness the people but the LORD shall arise upon thee and his glory shall be seen upon thee 3 And the * Rev. 21.24 Gentiles shall come to thy light and kings to the brightness of thy rising 4 Ch. 49.18 Lift up thine eyes round about and see all they gather themselves together they come to thee thy sons shall come from far and thy daughters shall be nursed at thy side 5 Then thou shalt see and flow together and thine heart shall fear and be enlarged because the ‖ Or nois◠of the se◠shall be turned toward thee abundance of the sea shall be converted unto thee the ‖ Or wealth forces of the Gentiles shall come unto thee 6 The multitude of camels shall cover thee the dromedaries of Midian and Ephah all they from Sheba shall come they shall bring * Ch. 61.6 gold and incense and they shall shew forth the praises of the LORD 7 All the flocks of Kedar shall be gathered together unto thee the rams of Nebaieth shall minister unto thee they shall come up with acceptance on mine altar and I will glorifie the house of my glory 8 Who are these that flie as a cloud and as the doves to their windows 9 Surely the isles shall wait for me and the ships of Tarshish first * Gal. 4.26 to bring thy sons from far their silver and their gold with them unto the name of the LORD thy God and to the holy One of Israel because he hath glorified thee 10 And the sons of strangers shall build up thy walls and their kings shall minister unto thee for in my wrath I smote thee but in my favour have I had mercy on thee 11 Therefore thy gates * Re. 21 25. shall be open continually they shall not be shut day nor night that men may bring unto thee the ‖ Or wealth forces of the Gentiles and that their kings may be brought 12 For the nation and kingdom that will not serve thee shall perish yea those nations shall be utterly wasted 13 The glory of Lebanon shall come unto thee the fir-tree the pine-tree and the box together to beautifie the place of my sanctuary and I will make the place of my feet glorious 14 The sons also of them that afflicted thee shall come bending unto thee and all they that despised thee shall * Rev. 3.9 bow themselves down at the soles of thy feet and they shall call thee The city of the LORD the Zion of the holy One of Israel 15 Whereas thou hast been forsaken and hated so that no man went through thee I will make thee an eternal excellency a joy of many generations 16 Thou shalt also suck the milk of the Gentiles and shalt suck the breast of kings and thou shalt know that I the LORD am thy saviour and thy redeemer the mighty One of Jacob. 17 For brass I will bring gold and for iron I will bring silver and for wood brass and for stones iron I will also make thy officers peace and thine exactours righteousness 18 Violence shall no more be heard in thy land wasting nor destruction within thy borders but thou shalt call thy walls Salvation and thy gates Praise 19 * Rev. 21.23 22. ◠The sun shall be no more thy light by day neither for brightness shall the moon give light unto thee but the LORD shall be unto thee an everlasting light and thy God thy glory 20 Thy sun shall no more go down neither shall thy moon withdraw it self for the LORD shall be thine everlasting light and the days of thy mourning shall be ended 21 Thy people also shall be all righteous they shall inherit the land for ever the branch of my planting the work of my hands that I may be glorified 22 A little one shall become a thousand and a small one a strong nation I the LORD will hasten it in his time CHAP. LXI 1 The office of Christ 4 The forwardness 7 and blessings of the faithful THE * Luke 4.18 spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me because the LORD hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek he hath sent me to blinde up the broken-hearted to proclaim liberty to the captives and the opening of the prison to them hat are bound 2 To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD and the day of vengeance of our God to comfort all that mourn 3 To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion to give unto them beauty for ashes the oyl of joy for mourning the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness that they might be called trees of righteousness the planting of the LORD that he might be glorified 4 ¶ And they shall * Chap. 58.12 build the old wastes they shall raise up the former desolations and they shall repart the waste cities the desolations of many generations 5 And strangers shall stand and feed your flocks and the sons of the alien shall be your plowman and your vine-dressers 6 But ye shall be named the priests of the LORD men shall call you the ministers of our God * Chap. 60.6 ye
shall build houses and inhabit them and they shall plant vineyards and eat the fruit of them 22 They shall not build and another inhabit they shall not plant and another eat for as the days of a tree are the days of my people and mine elect †Heb. shall make than continue long or shall â—ur out shall long enjoy the work of their hands 23 They shall not labour in vain nor bring forth for trouble for they are the seed of the blessed of the LORD and their offspring with them 24 And it shall come to pass that * Psal 32.5 before they call I will answer and whiles they are yet speaking I will hear 25 The * Chap. 11. 6 7. wolf and the lamb shall seed together and the lion shall eat straw like the bullock and dust shall be the serpents meat They shall not hurt nor dâ—stroy in all my holy mountain saith the LORD CHAP. III. 1 Children must honour and help both their parents 21 We may not desire to know all things 26 The incorrigible must needs perish 30 Alms are rewarded HEar me your father O children and do thereafter that ye may be safe 2 For the Lord hath given * Ex. 20.12 Deut. 5.6 the father honour over the children and hath confirmed the ‖ Or judgement authority of the mother over the sons 3 Whoso honoureth his father maketh an atonement for his sins 4 And he that honoureth his mother is as one that layeth up treasure 5 Whoso honoureth his father shall have joy of his own children and when he maketh his prayer he shall be heard 6 He that honoureth his father shall have a long life and he that is obedient unto the Lord shall be a comfort to his mother 7 He that feareth the Lord will honour his father and will do service unto his parents as to his masters 8 * Verse 2. Honour thy father and mother both in word and deed that a blessing may come upon thee from them 9 For the * Gen. 27.27 Deut. 33.1 blessing of the father establisheth the houses of children but the curse of the mother rooteth out foundations 10 Glory not in the dishonour of thy father for thy fathers dishonour is no glory unto thee 11 For the glory of a man is from the honour of his father and a mother in dishonour is a reproach unto the children 12 My son help thy father in his age and grieve him not as long as he liveth 13 And if his understanding fail have patience with him and despise him not when thou art ‖ Or in all thine ability in thy full strength 14 For the relieving of thy father shall not be forgotten and in stead of sins it shall be added to build thee up 15 In the day of thine affliction it shall be remembred thy sins also shall melt away as the ice in the fair warm weather 16 He that forsaketh his father is as a blasphemer and he that angreth his mother is cursed of God 17 My son go on with thy business in meekness so shalt thou be beloved of him that is approved 18 * Phil. 2.3 The greater thou art the more humble thy self and thou shalt finde favour before the Lord. 19 Many are in high place and of renown but * Psal 25.9 14. mysteries are revealed unto the meek 20 For the power of the Lord is great and he is honoured of the lowly 21 * Prov. 25.27 Rom. 12.3 Seek not out the things that are too hard for thee neither search the things that are above thy strength 22 But what is commanded thee think thereupon with reverence for it is not needful for thee to see with thine eyes the things that are in secret 23 Be not curious in unnecessary matters for mo things are shewed unto thee then men understand 24 For many are deceived by their own vain opinion and an evil suspicion hath overthrown their judgement 25 Without eyes thou shalt want light profess not the knowledge thereof that thou hast not 26 A stubborn heart shall fare evil at the last and he that loveth danger shall perish therein 27 An obstinate heart shall be laden with sorrows and the wicked man shall heap sin upon sin 28 ‖ Or The proud man is not healed by his punishment In the punishment of the proud there is no remedy for the plant of wickedness hath taken root in him 29 The heart of the prudent will understand a parable and an attentive ear is the desire of a wise man 30 * Ps 41.1 c. Dan. 4.27 Matth. 5.7 Water will quench a flaming fire and alms maketh an atonement for sins 31 And he that requiteth good turns is mindful of that which may come hereafter and when he falleth he shall finde a stay CHAP. IV. 1 We may not despise the poor or fatherless 11 but seek for wisdom 20 not be ashamed of some things nor gainsay the truth 30 nor be as lions in our houses MY son defraud not the poor of his living and make not the needy eyes to wait long 2 Make not an hungry soul sorrowful neither provoke a man in his distress 3 Add not more trouble to an heart that is vexed and defer not to give to him that is in need 4 Reject not the supplication of the afflicted neither turn away thy face from a poor man 5 Turn not away thine eye from ‖ Or him that asketh the needy and give him none occasion to curse thee 6 For if he curse thee in the bitterness of his soul his prayer shall be heard of him that made him 7 Get thy self the love of the congregation and bow thy head to a great man 8 Let it not grieve thee to bow down thine ear to the poor and give him a friendly answer with meekness 9 Deliver him that suffereth wrongs from the hand of the oppressour and be not faint-hearted when thou sittest in judgement 10 Be as a father unto the fatherless and in stead of an husband unto their mother so shalt thou be as the son of the most High and he shall love thee more then thy mother doth 11 Wisdom exalteth her children and layeth hold of them that seek her 12 He that loveth her loveth life and they that seek to her early shall be filled with joy 13 He that holdeth her fast shall inherit glory and wheresoever she entreth the Lord will bless 14 They that serve her shall minister ‖ Or in the sanctuary to the holy One and them that love her the Lord doth love 15 Whoso giveth ear unto her shall judge the nations and he that attendeth unto her shall dwell securely 16 If a man commit himself unto her he shall inherit her and his generation shall hold her in possession 17 For at the first she will walk with him by crooked ways and bring fear and dread upon him and torment him with her discipline until she may trust his soul and try him by her laws 18 Then will she return the straight way unto him and comfort him and shew him her secrets 19 But if he go wrong she will forsake him and give him over to his own ruine 20 Observe the opportunity and beware of evil and be not ashamed when it concerneth thy soul 21 For there is a shame that bringeth sin and there is a shame which is glory and grace 22 Accept no person against thy soul and let not the reverence of any man cause thee to fall 23 And refrain not to speak †Or in time of

the Assyrian was a cedar in Lebanon †Heb. fair of branches with fair branches and with a shadowing shroud and of an high stature and his top was among the thick boughs 4 The waters ‖ Or nourished made him great the deep ‖ Or brought him up set him up on high with her rivers running round about his plants and sent out her ‖ Or conduits little rivers unto all the trees of the field 5 Therefore his height was exalted above all the trees of the field and his boughs were multiplied and his branches became long because of the multitude of waters ‖ Or when it sent them forth when he shot forth 6 All the * Dan 4. fowls of heaven made their nests in his boughs and under his branches did all the beasts of the field bring forth their young and under his shadow dwelt all great nations 7 Thus was he fair in his greatness in the longth of his branches for his root was by great waters 8 The cedars in the * Gen. â— garden of God could not hide him the fir-trees were not like his boughs and the cheâ—nut trees were not like his branches not any tree in the garden of God was like unto him in his beauty 9 I have made him fair by the multitude of his branches so that all the trees of Eden that were in the garden of God envied him 10 ¶ Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD Because thou hast lifted up thy self in height and he hath shot up his top among the thick boughs and his heart is lifted up in his height 11 I have therefore delivered him into the hand of the mighty one of the heathen †Heb. in dâ—ink be shall aâ— unto kinâ— he shall surely deal with him I have driven him out for his wickedness 12 And strangers the terrible of the nations have cut him off and have left him upon the mountains and in all the valleys his branches are faln and his boughs are broken by all the rivers of the land and all the people of the earth are gone down from his shadow and have left him 13 Upon his ruine shall all the fowls of the heaven remain and all the beasts of the field shall be upon his branches 14 To the end that none of all the trees by the waters exalt themselves for their height neither shoot up their top among the thick boughs neither their tree ‖ Or stand upon themselves for their height stand up in their height all that drink water for they are all delivered unto death to the nether parts of the earth in the midst of the children of men with them that go down to the pit 15 Thus saith the Lord GOD In the day when he went down to the grave I caused a mourning I covered the deep for him and I restrained the flouds thereof and the great waters were stayed and I caused Lebanon †Heb. to be black to mourn for him and all the trees of the field fainted for him 16 I made the nations to shake at the sound of his fall when I cast him down to hell with them that descend into the pit and all the trees of Eden the choice and best of Lebanon all that drink water shall be comforted in the nether parts of the earth 17 They also went down into hell with him unto them that be slain with the sword and they that were his arm that dwelt under his shadow in the midst of the heathen 18 ¶ To whom art thou thus like in glory and in greatness among the trees of Eden yet shall thou be brought down with the trees of Eden unto the nether parts of the earth thou shalt lie in the midst of the uncircumcised with them that be slain by the sword this is Pharaoh and all his multitude saith the Lord GOD. CHAP. XXXII 1 A lamentation for the fearful fall of Egypt 11 The sword of Babylon shall destroy it 17 It shall be brought down to hell among all the uncircumcised nations ANd it came to pass in the twelfth year in the twelfth moneth in the first day of the moneth that the word of the LORD came unto me saying 2 Son of man take up a lamentation for Pharaoh king of Egypt and say unto him Thou art like a young lion of the nation and thou art aâ— a whale in the seas and thou camest forth with thy rivers ‖ Or â—eaâ—on and troubledst the waters with thy feet and fouledst their rivers 3 Thus saith the Lord GOD I will therefore * Chap. 12 13. 17.20 spread out my net over thee with a company of many people and they shall bring thee up in my net 4 Then will I leave thee upon the land I will cast thee forth upon the open field and will cause all the fowls of the heaven to remain upon thee and I will fill the beasts of the whole earth with thee 5 And I will lay thy flesh upon the mountains and fill the valleys with thy height 6 I will also water with thy bloud ‖ Or the land of thy swimming the land wherein thou swimmest even to the mountains and the river shall be full of thee 7 And when I shall ‖ Or extinâ—â—st put thee out * Isa 13.12 Joâ—l 2.21 and 3.15 Matth. 24 2â— I will cover the heaven and make the stars thereof dark I will cover the sun with a cloud and the moon shall not give her light 8 All the †Heb. â—â—it of the light in heaven brought lights of heaven will I make †Heb. them dark dark over thee and set darkness upon thy land saith the Lord GOD. 9 I will also †Heb. provâ—ke to anger of grief vex the hearts of many people when I shall bring thy destruction among the nations into the countreys which thou haâ—t not known 10 Yea I will make many people amazed at thee and their kings shall be horribly afraid for thee when I shall brandish my sword before them and they shall tremble at every moment every man for his own life in the day of thy fall 11 ¶ For thus saith the Lord GOD The sword of the king of Babylon shall come upon thee 12 By the swords of the mighty will I cause thy multitude to fall the terrible of the nations all of them and they shall spâ—â—l the pomp of Egypt and all the multitude thereof shall be destroyed 13 I will destroy also all the beasts thereof from besides the great waters neither shall the foot of man trouble them any more nor the hoofs of beasts trouble them 14 Then will I make their waters deep and cause their rivers to run like oyl saith the Lord GOD. 15 When I shall make the land of Egypt desolate and the countrey shall be †Heb. desolate from 〈◊〉 fulness thereof destitute of that whereof it was full when I shall smite all them that dwell therein
part of the hand that wrote 6 Then the kings †Cald. brightnessâ—â— countenance †Cald. changed iâ— was changed and his thoughts troubled him so that the ‖ Or girdles †Cald. bindings oâ— knots joynts of his loyns were loosed and his knees smote one against another 7 The king cried †Cald. with might aloud to bring in the astrologers the Caldeans and the soothsayers and the king spake and said to the wise men of Babylon Whosoever shall read this writing and shew me the interpretation thereof shall be clothed with ‖ Or purpâ—â— scarlet and have a chain of gold about his neck and shall be the third ruler in the kingdom 8 Then came in all the kings wise men but they could not read the writing nor make known to the king the interpretation thereof 9 Then was king Belshazzar greatly troubled and his †Cald. brightnesses countenance was changed in him and his lords were astonied 10 ¶ Now the queen by reason of the words of the king and his lords came into the banquet-house and the queen spake and said O king live for ever let not thy thoughts trouble thee nor let thy countenance be changed 11 * Ch. 2.48 There is a man in thy kingdom in whom is the spirit of the holy gods and in the days of thy ‖ Or grandfather father light and understanding and wisdom like the wisdom of the gods was found in him whom the king Nebuchadnezzar thy ‖ Or grandfather father the king I say thy father made * Ch. 4.9 master of the magicians astrologers Caldeans and soothsayers 12 Forasmuch as an excellent spirit and knowledge and understanding ‖ Or of an interpreter c. interpreting of dreams and shewing of hard sentences and ‖ Or of a dissolver dissolving of †Cald. knots doubts were found in the same Daniel whom the king named Belteshazzar now let Daniel be called and he will shew the interpretation 13 Then was Daniel brought in before the king and the king spake and said unto Daniel Art thou that Daniel which art of the children of the captivity of Judah whom the king my ‖ Or grandfather father brought out of Jewry 14 I have even heard of thee that the spirit of the gods is in thee and that light and understanding and excellent wisdom is found in thee 15 And now the wise men the astrologers have been brought in before me that they should read this writing and make known unto me the interpretation thereof but they could not shew the interpretation of the thing 16 And I have heard of thee that thou canst †Cald. interpret make interpretations and dissolve doubts now if thou canst read the writing and make known to me the interpretation thereof thou shalt be clothed with scarlet and have a chain of gold about thy neck and shalt be the third ruler in the kingdom 17 ¶ Then Daniel answered and said before the king Let thy gifts be to thy self and give thy ‖ Or feâ— as Ch. 2.6 rewards to another yet I will read the writing unto the king and make known to him the interpretation 18 O thou king the most high God gave Nebuchadnezzar thy father a kingdom and majesty and glory and honour 19 And for the majesty that he gave him all people nations and languages trembled and feared before him whom he would be slew and whom he would he kept alive and whom he would he set up and whom he would he put down ‖ Or to dead proudly 20 But when his heart was lifted up and his minde hardned in pride he was †Cald. made to come down deposed from his kingly throne and they took his glory from him 21 And he was * Ch. 4.22 driven from the sons of men and ‖ Or he made his heart equal c. his heart was made like the beasts and his dwelling was with the wilde asses they fed him with grass like oxen and his body was wet with the dew of heaven till he knew that the most high God ruled in the kingdom of men and that he appointeth over it whomsoever he will 22 And thou his son O Belshazzar hast not humbled thine heart though thou knewest all this 23 But hast lifted up thy self against the Lord of heaven and they have brought the vessels of his house before thee and thou and thy lords thy wives and thy concubines have drunk wine in them and thou hast praised the gods of silver and gold of brass iron wood and stone which see not nor hear nor know and the God in whose hand thy breath is and whose are all thy ways hast thou not glorified 24 Then was the part of the hand sent from him and this writing was written 25 ¶ And this is the writing that was written MENE MENE TEKEL UPHARSIN 26 This is the interpretation of the thing MENE God hath numbred thy kingdom and finished it 27 TEKEL thou art weighed in the balances and art found wanting 28 PERES thy kingdom is divided and given to the Medes and Persians 29 Then commanded Belshazzar and they clothed Daniel with scarlet and put a chain of gold about his neck and made a proclamation concerning him that he should be the third ruler in the kingdom 30 ¶ In that night was Belshazzar the king of the Caldeans slain 31 And Darius the Median took the kingdom †Cald. he as the son of c. being ‖ Or now about threescore and two year old CHAP. VI. 1 Daniel is made chief of the presidents 4 They couspiring against him obtain an idolatrous decree 10 Daniel accused of the breach thereof is cast into the lions den 18 Daniel is saved 24 his adversaries devoured 25 and God magnified by a decree IT pleased Darius to set over the kingdom an hundred and twenty princes which should be over the whole kingdom 2 And over these three presidents of whom Daniel was first that the princes might give accounts unto them and the king should have no damage 3 Then this Daniel was preferred above the presidents and princes because an excellent spirit was in him and the king thought to set him over the whole realm 4 ¶ Then the presidents and princes sought to finde occasion against Daniel concerning the kingdom but they could finde none occasion nor fault forasmuch as he was faithful neither was there any errour or fault found in him 5 Then said these men We shall not finde any occasion against this Daniel except we finde it against him concerning the law of his God 6 Then these presidents and princes †Or came â—â—multâ—â—ously assembled together to the king and said thus unto him King Darius live for ever 7 All the presidents of the kingdom the governours and the princes the counsellours and the captains have consulted together to establish a royal statute and to make a firm ‖
†Cald. a prolonging in life was given them their lives were prolonged for a season and time 13 I saw in the night-visions and behold one like the son of man came with the clouds of heaven and came to the Ancient of days and they brought him near before him 14 And there was given him dominion and glory and a kingdom that all people nations and languages should serve him his dominion is * Ch. 2.44 Mic. 4.7 Luk. 1.33 an everlasting dominion which shall not pass away and his kingdom that which shall not be destroyed 15 ¶ I Daniel was grieved in my spirit in the midst of my †Cald. sheath body and the visions of my head troubled me 16 I came near unto one of them that stood by and asked him the truth of all this so he told me and made me know the interpretation of the things 17 These great beasts which are four are four kings which shall arise out of the earth 18 But the saints of the †Cald. bâ—â—â—enes that is saints or places most High shall take the kingdom and possess the kingdom for ever even for ever and ever 19 Then I would know the truth of the fourth beast which was diverse †Cald. from all these from all the others exceeding dreadful whose teeth were of iron and his nails of brass which devoured brake in pieces and stamped the residue with his feet 20 And of the ten horns that were in his head and of the other which came up and before whom three fell even of that horn that had eyes and a mouth that spake very great things whose look was more stout then his fellows 21 I beheld and the same horn made war with the saints and prevailed against them 22 Until the Ancient of days came and judgement was given to the saints of the most High and the time came that the saints possessed the kingdom 23 Thus he said The fourth beast shall be the fourth kingdom upon earth which shall be diverse from all kingdoms and shall devour the whole earth and shall tread it down and break it in pieces 24 And the ten horns out of this kingdom are ten kings that shall arise and another shall rise after them and he shall be diverse from the first and he shall subdue three kings 25 And he shall speak great words against the most High and shall wear out the saints of the most High and think to change times and laws and they shall be given into his hand until a time and times and the dividing of time 26 But the judgement shall sit and they shall take away his dominion to consume and to destroy it unto the end 27 And the * Luk. 1.33 kingdom and dominion and the greatness of the kingdom under the whole heaven shall be given to the people of the saints of the most High whose kingdom is an everlasting kingdom and all ‖ Or rulers dominions shall serve and obey him 28 Hitherto is the end of the matter As for me Daniel my cogitations much troubled me and my countenance changed in me but I kept the matter in my heart CHAP. VIII 1 Daniels vision of the ram and he-goat 13 The two thousand three hundred days of sacrifice 15 Gabriel comforteth Daniel and interpreteth the vision IN the third year of the reign of king Belshazzar a vision appeared unto me even unto me Daniel after that which appeared unto me at the first 2 And I saw in a vision and it came to pass when I saw that I was at Shushan in the palace which is in the province of Elam and I saw in a vision and I was by the river of Ulai 3 Then I lifted up mine eyes and saw and behold there stood before the river a ram which had two horns and the two horns were high but one was higher then †Heb. the second the other and the higher came up last 4 I saw the ram pushing west-ward and north-ward and southward so that no beasts might stand before him neither was there any that could deliver out of his hand but he did according to his will and became great 5 And as I was considering behold an he-goat came from the west on the face of the whole earth and ‖ Or none touched him in the earth touched not the ground and the goat had †Heb. a horn of sight a notable horn between his eyes 6 And he came to the ram that had two horns which I had seen standing before the river and ran unto him in the fury of his power 7 And I saw him come close unto the ram and he was moved with choler against him and smote the ram and brake his two horns and there was no power in the ram to stand before him but he cast him down to the ground and stamped upon him and there was none that could deliver the ram out of his hand 8 Therefore the he-goat waxed very great and when he was strong the great horn was broken and for it came up four notable ones * Ch. 23.4 toward the four winds of heaven 9 And out of one of them came forth a little horn which waxed exceeding great toward the south and toward the east and toward the * Ps 48.2 Ezek. 20.2 Ezek. 20. â— pleasant land 10 And it waxed great even ‖ Or against the host to the host of heaven and it cast down some of the host and of the stars to the ground and stamped upon them 11 Yea he magnified himself even ‖ Or against to the prince of the host and ‖ Or from him by him the daily sacrifice was taken away and the place of his sanctuary was cast down 12 And ‖ Or the host was given over for the transgression against the daily sacrifice an host was given him against the daily sacrifice by reason of transgression and it cast down the truth to the ground and it practised and prospered 13 ¶ Then I heard one saint speaking and another saint said unto ‖ The numberer of secrets or the wonderful numberer †Heb. Pâ—lmoni that certain saint which spake How long shall be the vision concerning the daily sacrifice and the transgression ‖ Or making desolate of desolation to give both the sanctuary and the host to be troden under foot 14 And he said unto me Unto two thousand and three hundred †Heb. evening morning days then shall the sanctuary be †Heb. Justified cleansed 15 ¶ And it came to pass when I even I Dniel had seen the vision and sought for the meaning then behold there stood before me as the appearance of a man 16 And I heard a mans voice between the banks of Ulai which called and said * Ch. 9.21 Gabriel make this man to understand the vision 17 So he came near where I stood and when he came I was afraid and fell upon my
one accord and said unto her Thou art the exaltation of Jerusalem thou art the great glory of Israel thou art the great rejoycing of our nation 10 Thou hast done all these thingâ— by thine hand thou hast done much good to Israel and God is pleased therewith blessed be thou of the Almighty Lord for evermore and all the people said So be it 11 And the people spoiled the camp the space of thirty days and they gave unto Judith Holofernes his tent and all his plate and beds and vessels and all his stuff and she took it and laid it on her mule and made ready her carts and laid them thereon 12 Then all the women of Israel ran together to see her and blessed her and made a dance among them for her and she took branches in her hand and gave also to the women that were with her 13 And they put a garland of olive upon her and her maid that was with her and she went before all the people in the dance leading all the women and all the men of Israel followed in their armour with garlands and with longs in their mouths CHAP. XVI 6 The song of Judith 19 She dedicateth the stuff of Holofernes 23 She died at Bethullas a widow of great honour 24 All Israel did lament her death THen Judith began to sing this thanksgiving in all Israel and all the people sang after her ‖ Or. this prâ—ising this song of praise 2 And Judith said Begin unto my God with timbrels sing unto my Lord with cymbals tune unto him a ‖ Or. Psalm and praise new psalm exalt him and call upon his name 3 For God breaketh the battels for amongst the camps in the midst of the people he hath delivered me out of the hands of them that persecuted me 4 Assur came out of the mountains from the north he came with ten thousands of his army the * Chap. 2.19 multitude whereof stopped the torrents and their hors-men have covered the hills 5 He bragged that he would burn up my borders and kill my young men with the sword and dash the sucking children against the ground and make mine infants as a prey and my virgins as a spoil 6 But the Almighty Lord hath disappointed them by the hand of a woman 7 For the mighty one did not fall by the young men neither did the sons of the Titans smite him nor high giants set upon him but Judith the daughter of Merari weakned him with the beauty of her countenance 8 For she put off the garment of her widowhood for the exaltation of those that were oppressed in Israel and anointed her face with ointment and bound her hair in a †Gr. mitrâ— tire and took a linen garment to deceive him 9 Her sandals ravished his eyes her beauty took his minde prisoner and the fauchion passed through his neck 10 The Perlians quaked at her boldness and the Medes were ‖ Or confounded daunted at her hardiness 11 Then my afflicted shouted for joy and my weak ones cried aloud but ‖ the Assyrians they were astonished these lifted up their voices but they were overthrown 12 The sons of the damsels have pierced them through and wounded them as fugitives children they perished by the battel of the Lord. 13 I will sing unto the Lord ‖ Or a song of praise a new song O Lord thou art great and glorious wonderful in strength and invincible 14 Let all creatures serve thee for thou spakest and they were made thou didst send forth thy spirit and it created them and there is none that can resist thy voice 15 For the mountains shall be moved from their foundations with the waters the rocks shall melt as wax at thy presence yet thou art merciful to them that fear thee 16 For all sacrifice is too little for a sweet savour unto thee and all the fat is not sufficient for thy burnt-offering but he that feareth the Lord is great at all times 17 Wo to the nations that rise up against my kindred the Lord Almighty will take vengeance of them in the day of judgement in putting fire and worms in their flesh and they shall feel them and weep for ever 18 Now assoon as they entred into Jerusalem they worshipped the Lord and assoon as the people were purified they offered their burnt-offerings and their free-offerings and their gifts 19 Judith also dedicated all the stuff of Holofernes which the people had given her and gave the canopy which she had taken out of his bed-chamber for a gift unto the Lord. 20 So the people continued feasting in Jerusalem before the sanctuary for the space of three moneths and Judith remained with them 21 After this time every one returned to his own inheritance and Judith went to Bethulia and remained in her own possession and was in her time honourable in all the countrey 22 And many desired her but none knew her all the days of her life after that Manasses her husband was dead and was gathered to his people 23 But she increased more and more in honour and waxed old in her husbands house being an hundred and five years old and made her maid free so she died in Bethulia and they buried her in the ‖ Or sepulebre cave of her husband Manasses 24 And the house of Israel lamented her * Gen. 50.10 seven days and before she died she did distribute her goods to all them that were nearest of kindred to Manasses her husband and to them that were the nearest of her kindred 25 And there was none that made the children of Israel any more afraid in the days of Judith nor a long time after her death ¶ The rest of the chapters of the book of ESTHER which are found neither in the Hebrew nor in the Caldee Part of the tenth Chapter after the Greek 5 Mardotheus remembreth and expoundeth his dream of the river and the two draâ—ons THen Mardocheus said God hath done these things 5 For I remember a dream which I saw concerning these matters and nothing thereof hath failed 6 A little fountain became a river and there was light and the sun and much water this river is Esther whom the king married and made queen 7 And the two dragons are I and Aman. 8 And the nations were those that were assembled to destroy the name of the Jews 9 And my nation is this Israel which cried to God and were saved for the Lord hath saved his people and the Lord hath delivered us from all those evils and God hath wrought signs and great wonders which have not been done among the Gentiles 10 Therefore hath he made two lots one for the people of God and another for all the Gentileâ— 11 And these two lots came at the hour and time and day of Judgement before God amongst all nations 12 So God remembred his people and justified his inheritance 13 Therefore those days shall be unto them in
understanding or deceit beguile his soul 12 For the bewitching of naughtiness doth obscure things that are honest and the wandring of concupiscence doth †Gr. pervert undermine the simple minde 13 He being made ‖ Or sanctified or consummated perfect in a short time fulfilled a long time 14 For his soul pleased the Lord therefore hasted he to take him away from among the wicked 15 This the people saw and understood it not neither laid they up this in their minds That his grace and mercy is with his saints and that he hath respect unto his chosen 16 Thus the righteous that is dead shall condemn the ungodly which are living and youth that is soon perfected the many years and old age of the unrighteous 17 For they shall see the end of the wise and shall not understand what God in his counsel hath decreed of him and to what end the Lord hath set him in safety 18 They shall see him and despise him but God shall laugh them to scorn and they shall hereafter be a vile carcase and a reproach among the dead for evermore 19 For he shall rend them and cast them down headlong that they shall be speechless and he shall shake them from the foundation and they shall be utterly laid waste and be in sorrow and their memorial shall perish 20 And ‖ Or to the casting up of the account when they cast up the accounts of their sins they shall come with fear and their own iniquities shall convince them to their face CHAP. thereof and all the house of Jacob was covered with confusion 29 And after two years fully expired the king sent his chief collectour of tribute unto the cities of Juda who came unto Jerusalem with a great multitude 30 And spake peaceable words unto them but all was deceit for when they had given him credence he fell suddenly upon the city and smote it very sore and destroyed much people of Israel 31 And when he had taken the spoils of the city he set it on fire and pulled down the houses and walls thereof on every side 32 But the women and children took they captive and possessed the cattel 33 Then builded they the city of David with a great and strong wall and with mighty towres and made it a strong hold for them 34 And they put therein a sinful nation wicked men and fortified themselves therein 35 They stored it also with armour and victuals and when they had gathered together the spoils of Jerusalem they laid them up there and so they became a sore snare 36 For it was a place to lie in wait against the sanctuary and an evil adversary to Israel 37 Thus they shed innocent bloud on every side of the sanctuary and defiled it 38 Insomuch that the inhabitants of Jerusalem fled because of them whereupon the city was made an habitation of strangers and became strange to those that were born in her and her own children left her 39 Her sanctuary was laid waste like a wilderness her feasts were turned into mourning her sabbaths into reproach her honour into contempt 40 As had been her glory so was her dishonour increased and her excellency was turned into mourning 41 Moreover king Antiochus wrote to his whole kingdom that all should be one people 42 And every one should leave his laws so all the heathen agreed according to the commandment of the king 43 Yea many also of the Israelites consented to his religion and sacrificed unto idols and profaned the sabbath 44 For the king had sent letters by messengers unto Jerusalem and the cities of Juda that they should follow ‖ Or the laws and rites of the strangers of the land the strange laws of the land 45 And forbid burnt-offerings and sacrifice and drink-offerings in the temple and that they should profane the sabbaths and festival days 46 And pollute the sanctuary and holy people 47 Set up altars and groves and chappels of idols and sacrifice swines flesh and unclean beasts 48 That they should also leave their children uncircumcised and make their souls abominable with all manner of uncleanness and profanation 49 To the end they might forget the law and change all the ordinances 50 And whosoever would not do according to the commandment of the king he said he should die 51 In the self-same manner wrote he to his whole kingdom and appointed overseers over all the people commanding the cities of Juda to sacrifice city by city 52 Then many of the people were gathered unto them to wit every one that forsook the law and so they committed evils in the land 53 ‖ Or And they made Israel hide themselves in holes in every place of succour And drove the Israelites into secret places even wheresoever they could flee for succour 54 Now the fifteenth day of the moneth Casleu in the hundred fourty and fifth year they set up the abomination of desolation upon the altar and builded idol-altars throughout the cities of Juda on every side 55 And burnt incense at the doors of their houses and in the streets 56 And when they had rent in pieces the books of the law which they found they burnt them with fire 57 And wheresoever was found with any the book of the testament or if any consented to the law †Gr. the kings commandment put him to death the kings commandment was that they should put him to death 58 Thus did they by their authority unto the Israelites every moneth to as many as were found in the cities 59 Now the five and twentieth day of the moneth they did sacrifice upon the idol-altar which was upon the altar of God 60 At which time according to the commandment they put to death certain women †Gr. that had circumcised their children that had caused their children to be circumcised 61 And they hanged the infants about their necks and rifled their houses and slew them that had circumcised them 62 Howbeit many in Israel were fully resolved and confirmed in themselves not to eat any unclean thing 63 Wherefore they chose rather to die that they might not be defiled with meats and that they might not profane the holy covenant so then they died 64 And there was very great wrath upon Israel CHAP. II. 6 Mattathias lamenteth the case of Jerusalem 24 He slayeth a Jew that did sacrifice to idols in his presence and the kings messenger also 34 He and his are assailed on the sabbath and make no resistance 50 He dieth and instrutieth his sons 66 and maketh their brother Judas Maccabeus general IN those days ‖ Or Mattathias the son of John c. arose from Jerusalem or out of Jerusalem arose Mattathias the son of John the son of Simeon a priest of the sons of Joarib from Jerusalem and dwelt in Modin 2 And he had five sons Joannan ‖ Or who was called and so aflterward in the rest called ‖ Gaddis Caddis 3 Simon called Thassi 4 Judas who was called Maccabeus 5 Eleazar called ‖ Or Avaron or Abaron Avaran and Jonathan whose surname was Apphus 6 And when he saw the blasphemies that were committed in Juda and Jerusalem 7 He said Wo is me wherefore was I born to see this misery of my people and of the holy city and to dwell there when it was delivered into the hand of the enemy and the sanctuary into the hand of strangers 8 Her temple is become as a man without glory 9 Her glorious vessels are carried away into captivity her infants are slain in the streets her young men with the sword of the enemy 10 What nation
‖ Or the wealth of the land good things and the young men put on glorious warlike apparel 10 He provided victuals for the cities set in them all manner of munition so that his honourable name was renowned unto the end of the world 11 He made peace in the land and Israel rejoyced with great joy 12 For * 1 Kin. 4.25 every man lat under his vine and his fig-tree and there was none to fray them 13 Neither was there any left in the land to fight against them yea the kings themselves were overthrown in those days 14 Moreover he strengthned all those of his people that were brought low the law he searched out and every contemner of the law and wicked person he took away 15 He beautified the sanctuary and multiplied the vessels of the temple 16 Now when it was heard at Rome and as far as Sparta that Jonathan was dead they were very sorry 17 But assoon as they heard that his brother Simon was made high priest in his stead and ruled the countrey and the cities therein 18 They wrote unto him in tables of brass to renew the friendship and league which they had made with Judas Jonathan his brethren 19 Which writings were read before the congregation at Jerusalem 20 And this is the copy of the letters that the Lacedemonians sent The rulers of the Lacedemonians with the city unto Simon the high priest and the elders and priests and residue of the people of the Jews our brethren send greeting 21 The ambassadours that were sent unto our people certified us of your glory and honour wherefore we were glad of their coming 22 And did register the things that they spake in the council of the people in this manner Numenius son of Antiochus and Antipater son of Jason the Jews ambassadours came unto us to renew the friendship they had with us 23 And it pleased the people to entertain the men honourably and to put the copy of their ambassage in publick records to the end the people of the Lacedemonians might have a memorial thereof furthermore we have written a copy thereof unto Simon the high priest 24 After this Simon sent Numenius to Rome with a great shield of gold of a thousand pound weight to confirm the league with them 25 Whereof when the people heard they said What thanks shall we give to Simon and his sons 26 For he and his brethren and the house of his father have established Israel and chased away in fight their enemies from them and confirmed their liberty 27 So then they wrote it in the tables of brass which they set upon pillars in mount Sion and this is the copy of the writing The eighteenth day of the moneth Elul in the hundred threescore and twelfth year being the third year of Simon the high priest 28 At ‖ Or Jerusalem peradventure by corruption and transposition of letters or as somethink the common hall where they met to consult of matters of estate Saramel in the great congregation of the priests and people and rulers of the nation and elders of the countrey were these things notified unto us 29 Forsomuch as oftentimes there have been wars in the countrey wherein for the mintenance of their sanctuary and the law Simon the son of Mattathias of the posterity of Jarib together with his brethren put themselves in jeopardy and resilting the enemies of their nation did their nation great honour 30 For after that Jonathan having gathered his nation together and been their high priest was added to his people 31 Their enemies purposed to invade their countrey that they might destroy it and lay hands on the sanctuary 32 At which time Simon rose up and sought for his nation and spent much of his own substance and armed ‖ Or the men of war the valiant men of his nation and gave them wages 33 And fortified the cities of Judea together with Bethsura that lieth upon the borders of Judea where the ‖ Or weâ—pons armour of the enemies had been before but he set a garison of Jews there 34 Moreover he fortified Joppe which lieth upon the sea and ‖ Or Gaâ—a Gazaâ—â— that bordereth upon Azotus where the enemies had dwelt before but he placed Jews there and furnished them with all things convenient for the reparation thereof 35 The people therefore seeing the acts of Simon and unto what glory he thought to bring his nation made him their governour and chief priest because he had done all these things and for the justice and saith which he kept to his nation and for that he sought by all means to exalt his people 36 For in his time things prospered in his hands so that the heathen were taken out of their countrey and they also that were in the city of David in Jerusalem who had made themselves a towre out of with they issued of luted all about the sanctuary did much hurt ‖ Or unto religion in the holy places 37 But he placed Jews therein and fortified it for the safety of the countrey and the city and raised up the walls of Jerusalem 38 King Demetrius also confirmed him in the high priesthood according to those things 39 And made him one of his friends honored him with great honor 40 For he had heard say that the Romanes had called the Jews their friends and confederates and brethren and that they had entertained the ambassadours of Simon honourably 41 Also that the Jews and priests were well pleased that Simon should be their governour and high priest for ever until there should arise a faithful prophet 42 Moreover that he should be their captain and should take charge of the sanctuary to set them over their works and over the countrey and over the armour and over the fortresses that I say he should take charge of the sanctuary 43 Besides this that he should be obeyed of every man and that all the writings in the countrey should be made in his name and that he should be clothed in purple and wear gold 44 Also that it should be lawful for none of the people or priests to break any of these things or to gainsay his words or to gather an assembly in the countrey without him or to be clothed in purple or wear a buckle of gold 45 And whosoever should do otherwise or break any of these things he should be punished 46 Thus it liked all the people to deal with Simon and to do as hath been said 47 Then Simon accepted hereof was well pleased to be high priest and captain governour of the Jews priests to defend them all 48 So they commanded that this writing should be put in tables of brass and that they should be set up within the compass of the sanctuary in a conspicuous place 49 Also that the copies thereof should be laid up in the treasury to the end that Simon and his sons might have them

XVIII 2 Babylon is faln 4 The people of God commanded to depart out of her 9 The kings of the earth 11 with the merchants and mariners lament over her 20 The saints rejoyce for the judgements of God upon her ANd after these things I saw another angel come down from heaven having great power and the earth was lightned with his glory 2 And he cried mightily with a strong voice saying * Cha. 14.8 Babylon the great is fain is fain and is become the habitation of devils and the hold of every foul spirit and a cage of every unclean and hateful bird 3 For all nations have drunk of the wine of the wrath of her fornication and the kings of the earth have committed fornication with her and the merchants of the earth are waxed rich through the ‖ Or power abundance of her delicacies 4 And I heard another voice from heaven saying * Jer. 51.6 Come out of her my people that ye be not partakers of her sins and that ye receive not of her plagues 5 For her sins have reached unto heaven and God hath remembred her iniquities 6 Reward her even as she rewarded you and double unto her double according to her works in the cup which she hath filled fill to her double 7 How much she hath glorified her self and lived deliciously so much torment and sorrow give her for she saith in her heart I sit a * Isa 47.8 queen and am no widow and shall see no sorrow 8 Therefore shall her plagues come in one day death and mourning and samine and she shall be utterly burnt with fire for strong is the Lord God who judgeth her 9 And the kings of the earth who have committed fornication and lived deliciously with her * Ezek. 26. â—7 shall bewail her and lament for her when they shall see the smoke of her burning 10 Standing afar off for the fear of her torment saying Alas alas that great city Babylon that mighty city for in one hour is thy judgement come 11 And the merchants of the earth shall weep and mourn over her for no man buyeth * Ezek. 27.27 her merchandise any more 12 The merchandise of gold and silver and precious stones and of pearls and fine linen and purple and silk and scarlet and all ‖ Or sweet thyine wood and all manner vessels of ivory and all manner vessels of most precious wood and of brass and iron and marble 13 And cinnamon and odours and ointments and frankincense and wine and oyl and fine flour and wheat and beasts and sheep and horses and chariots and ‖ Or. bodies slaves and souls of men 14 And the fruits that thy soul lusted after are departed from thee and all things which were dainty and goodly are dâ—parted from thee and thou shalt finde them no more at all 15 The merchants of these things which were made rich by her shall stand afar off for the fear of her torment weeping and wailing 16 And saying Alas alas that great city that was clothed in fine linen and purple and searlet and decked with gold and precious stones and pearls 17 For in one

XXI 1 A new heaven and a new earth 10 The heavenly Jerusalem with a full description thereof 23 She needeth no sun the glory of God is her light 24 The kings of the earth bring their riches unto her ANd * Isa 65.17 2 Pet. 3.13 I saw a new heaven and a new earth for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away and there was no more sea 2 And I John saw the holy city new Jerusalem coming down from God out of heaven prepared as a bride adorned for her husband 3 And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying Behold the tabernacle of God is with men and he will dwell with them and they shall be his people and God himself shall be with them and be their God 4 * Chap. 7.17 And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes and there shall be no more death neither sorrow nor crying neither shall there be any more pain for the former things are passed away 5 And he that sat upon the throne said * Isa 43.19 2 Cor. 5.17 Behold I make all things new And he said unto me Write for these words are true and faithful 6 And he said unto me It is done * Chap. 1.8 22.13 I am Alpha and Omega the beginning and the end * Isa 55.1 I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely 7 He that overcometh shall inherit all things and I will be his God and he shall be my son 8 But the fearful and unbeleeving and the abominable and murderers and whoremongers and sorcerers and idolaters and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone which is the second death 9 And there came unto me one of the seven angels which had the seven vials full of the seven last plagues and talked with me saying Come hither I will shew thee the bride the Lambs wife 10 And he carried me away in the Spirit to a great and high mountain and shewed me that great city the holy Jerusalem descending out of heaven from God 11 Having the glory of God and her light was like unto a stone most precious even like a jasper stone clear as crystal 12 And had a wall great and high and had twelve gates and at the gates twelve angels and names written thereon which are the names of the twelve tribes of the children of Israel 13 On the east three gates on the north three gates on the south three gates and on the west three gates 14 And the wall of the city had twelve foundations and in them the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb. 15 And he that talked with me had a golden reed to measure the city and the gates thereof and the wall thereof 16 And the city lieth four-square and the length is as large as the breadth and he measured the city with the reed twelve thousand furlongs the length and the breadth and the height of it are equal 17 And he measured the wall thereof an hundred and fourty and four cubits according to the measure of a man that is of the angel 18 And the building of the wall of it was of jasper and the city was pure gold like unto clear glass 19 And the foundations of the wall of the city were garnished with all manner of precious stones The first foundation was jasper the second sapphire the third a chalcedony the fourth an emerald 20 The fifth sardonyx the sixth sardius the seventh chrysolite the eighth beryl the ninth a topaz the tenth a chrysoprasus the eleventh a jacinct the twelfth an amethyst 21 And the twelve gates were twelve pearls every several gate was of one pearl and the street of the city was pure gold as it were transparent glass 22 And I saw no temple therein for the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are the temple of it 23 * Isa 60 â—â— And the city had no need of the sun neither of the moon to shine in it for the glory of God did lighten it and the Lamb is the light thereof 24 * Isa 60. â— And the nations of them which are saved shall walk in the light of it and the kings of the earth do bring their glory and honour into it 25 * Isa 60.11 And the gates of it shall not be shut at all by day for there shall be no night there 26 And they shall bring the glory and honour of the nations into it 27 And there shall in no wise enter into it any thing that defileth neither whatsoever worketh abomination or maketh a lie but they which are written in the Lambs * Phil. 4.3 Chap. 3.5 and 20.12 book of life CHAP. XXII 1 The river of the water of life 2 The tree of life 5 The light of the city of God is himself 9 The angel will not be worshipped 18 Nothing may be added to the word of God nor taken therefrom ANd he shewed me a pure river of water of life clear as erystal proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb. 2 In the midst of the street of it and of either side of the river was there the tree of life which bare twelve manner of fruits and yeelded her fruit every moneth and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations 3 And there shall be no more curse but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it and his servants shall serve him 4 And they shall see his face and his name shall be in their foreheads 5 * Chap. 2â— 23 And there shall be no night there and they need no candle neither light of the sun for the Lord God giveth them light and they shall reign for ever and ever 6 And he said unto me These sayings are faithful and true And the Lord God of the holy prophets sent his angel to shew unto his servants the things which must shortly be done 7 Behold I come quickly blessed is he that keepeth the sayings of the prophesie of this book 8 And I John saw these things and heard them And when I had heard and seen I fell down to worship before the feet of the angel which shewed me these things 9 Then saith he unto me * Chap. 19.10 See thou do it not for I am thy fellow-servant and of thy brethren the prophets and of them which keep the sayings of this book worship God 10 And he saith unto me Seal not the sayings of the prophesie of this book for the time is at hand 11 He that is unjust let him be unjust still and he which is filthy let him be filthy still and he that is righteous let him be righteous still and he that is holy let him be holy still 12 And behold I come quickly and my reward is with me * Rom. 2.6 to give every man according as his work shall be 13 I am Alpha and Omega * Isa 41.4 and 44.6 Chap. 1.8 and 21.6 the beginning and the end the first and the last 14 Blessed are they that do his commandments that they may have right to the tree of life and may enter in through the gates into the city 15 For without are dogs and sorcerers and whoremongers and murderers and idolaters and whosoever loveth and maketh a lie 16 I Jesus have sent mine angel to testifie unto you these things in the churches I am the root and the offspring of David and the bright and morning star 17 And the Spirit and the Bride say Come And let him that heareth say Come * Isa 55.1 And let him that is athirst come And whosoever will let him take the water of life freely 18 For I testifie unto every man that heareth the words of the prophesie of this book * Deut. 4.2 Prov. 30 6. If any man shall add unto these things God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book 19 And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophesie God shall take away his part out of the book of life and out of the holy city and from the things which are written in this book 20 He which testifieth these things saith Surely I come quickly Amen Even so Come Lord Jesus 21 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all Amen FINIS

XVII 1 Nathan first approving the purpose of David to build God an house 3 after by the word of God forbidâ—eth him 11 He promiseth him blessings and benefits in his seed 16 Davids prayer and thanksgiving NOw * 2 Sam. 7.1 c. it came to pass as David sat in his house that David said to Nathan the prophet Lo I dwell in an house of cedars but the ark of the cevenant of the LORD remaineth under curtains 2 Then Nathan said unto David Do all that is in thine heart for God is with thee 3 ¶ And it came to pass the same night that the word of God came to Nathan saying 4 Go and tell David my servant Thus saith the LORD Thou shalt not build me an house to dwell in 5 For I have not dwelt in an house since the day that I brought up Israel unto this day but †Heb. have been have gone from tent to tent and from one tabernacle to another 6 Wheresoever I have walked with all Israel spake I a word to any of the judges of Israel whom I commanded to feed my people saying Why have ye not built me an house of cedars 7 Now therefore thus shalt thou say unto my servant David Thus saith the LORD of hosts I took thee from the sheep-cote even †Heb. from after from following the sheep that thou shouldest be ruler over my people Israel 8 And I have been with thee whithersoever thou hast walked and have cut off all thine enemies from before thee and have made thee a name like the name of the great men that are in the earth 9 Also I will ordain a place for my people Israel and will plant them and they shall dwell in their place and shall be moved no more neither shall the children of wickedness waste them any more as at the beginning 10 And since the time that I commanded judges to be over my people Israel moreover I will subdue all thine enemies Furthermore I tell thee that the LORD will build thee an house 11 ¶ And it shall come to pass when thy days be expired that thou must go to be with thy fathers that I will raise up thy seed after thee which shall be of thy sons and I will establish his kingdom 12 He shall build me an house and I will stablish his throne for ever 13 * 2 Sam. 7.14 I will be his father and he shall be my son and I will not take my mercy away from him as I took it from him that was before thee 14 But I will settle him in mine house and in my kingdom for ever and his throne shall be established for evermore 15 According to all these words and according to all this vision so did Nathan speak unto David 16 ¶ And David the king came and sat before the LORD and said Who am I O LORD God and what is mine house that thou hast brought me hitherto 17 And yet this was a small thing in thine eyes O God for thou hast also spoken of thy servants house for a great while to come and hast regarded me according to the estate of a man of high degree O LORD God 18 What can David speak more to thee for the honour of thy servant for thou knowest thy servant 19 O LORD for thy servants sake and according to thine own heart hast thou done all this greatness in making known all these †Heb. greatnesses great things 20 O LORD there is none like thee neither is there any God besides thee according to all that we have heard with our ears 21 And what one nation in the earth is like thy people Israel whom God went to redeem to be his own people to make thee a name of greatness and terribleness by driving out nations from before thy people whom thou hast redeemed out of Egypt 22 For thy people Israel didst thou make thine own people for ever and thou LORD becamest their God 23 Therefore now LORD let the thing that thou hast spoken concerning thy servant and concerning his house be established for ever and do as thou hast said 24 Let it even be established that thy name may be magnified for ever saying The LORD of hosts is the God of Israel even a God to Israel and let the house of David thy servant be established before thee 25 For thou O my God †Heb. hast revealed the ear of thy servant hast told thy servant that thou wilt build him an house therefore thy servant hath found in his heart to pray before thee 26 And now LORD thou art God and hast promised this goodness unto thy servant 27 Now therefore ‖ Or it hath plused thee let it please thee to bless the house of thy servant that it may be before thee for ever for thou blessest O LORD and it shall be blessed for ever CHAP.
