circumcision_n and_o the_o other_o ordinance_n together_o with_o the_o word_n preach_v do_v as_o true_o hold_v forth_o god_n grace_n in_o christ_n and_o the_o benefit_n thereof_o as_o the_o gospel_n now_o preach_v do_v and_o the_o ordinance_n of_o the_o new_a testament_n only_o the_o difference_n lie_v in_o christ_n to_o come_v and_o now_o come_v as_o also_o in_o the_o measure_n and_o manner_n when_o he_o be_v sure_o no._n 2_o that_o the_o gentile_n be_v make_v partaker_n of_o great_a grace_n by_o be_v out_o of_o covenant_n than_o the_o jew_n by_o be_v in_o covenant_n be_v a_o unreasonable_a speech_n for_o in_o that_o respect_n they_o be_v set_v one_o against_o another_o the_o gospel_n be_v preach_v unto_o they_o both_o and_o therefore_o unless_o he_o deny_v this_o he_o can_v avoid_v the_o blame_n of_o the_o former_a beside_o the_o jew_n have_v the_o oracle_n of_o god_n the_o adoption_n the_o promise_n etc._n etc._n rom._n 9.4_o by_o be_v in_o covenant_n but_o the_o gentile_n have_v nothing_o visible_a whereby_o they_o may_v be_v account_v partaker_n of_o god_n grace_n till_o they_o be_v in_o covenant_n and_o therefore_o the_o jew_n have_v large_a grace_n than_o the_o gentile_n believe_v or_o not_o believe_v not_o be_v in_o covonant_n etc._n etc._n a_o second_o answer_n he_o give_v to_o overthrow_v my_o consequence_n that_o if_o infant_n be_v not_o in_o the_o covenant_n now_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n be_v straighten_a by_o christ_n come_n be_v this_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n be_v now_o reveal_v to_o more_o people_n than_o before_o then_o it_o be_v confirm_v to_o the_o people_n of_o the_o jew_n only_o but_o now_o it_o be_v command_v to_o be_v preach_v to_o all_o nation_n therefore_o the_o exclusion_n of_o infant_n do_v not_o straiten_v the_o grace_n of_o god_n at_o all_o reply_v 1_o that_o the_o declaration_n of_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n be_v limit_v to_o the_o jew_n but_o now_o be_v common_a to_o all_o nation_n i_o grant_v as_o also_o that_o there_o be_v a_o more_o full_a and_o clear_a declaration_n of_o that_o grace_n of_o god_n now_o then_o in_o former_a time_n yea_o if_o he_o can_v lay_v down_o more_o respect_n wherein_o god_n grace_n be_v enlarge_v now_o above_o what_o it_o be_v then_o i_o shall_v well_o approve_v of_o it_o yet_o this_o touch_v not_o my_o argument_n that_o i_o allege_v and_o still_o affirm_v that_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n be_v now_o more_o straighten_a than_o it_o be_v then_o if_o infant_n be_v not_o now_o in_o the_o covenant_n as_o than_o they_o be_v and_o that_o beside_o other_o in_o a_o twofold_a respect_n first_o in_o respect_n of_o infant_n themselves_o who_o in_o this_o abound_a of_o grace_n dispense_v be_v exclude_v and_o shut_v out_o by_o the_o god_n of_o that_o grace_n when_o before_o they_o be_v not_o and_o therefore_o to_o they_o it_o be_v straighten_a second_o in_o respect_n of_o parent_n who_o then_o look_v upon_o their_o infant_n as_o the_o lord_n equal_o with_o themselves_o but_o now_o they_o look_v upon_o their_o infant_n as_o alien_n without_o god_n and_o christ_n and_o have_v no_o more_o interest_n in_o they_o then_o a_o indian_a child_n have_v nor_o be_v any_o parent_n or_o other_o to_o account_v of_o their_o child_n any_o otherwise_o then_o they_o do_v of_o the_o infant_n of_o a_o indian_a so_o that_o this_o discourse_n meddle_v not_o with_o my_o argument_n nor_o the_o scope_n of_o it_o nor_o be_v his_o answer_n to_o the_o purpose_n that_o shall_v clear_v this_o that_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n be_v not_o straighten_a now_o more_o than_o then_o though_o infant_n be_v exclude_v which_o be_v not_o then_o it_o may_v be_v yet_o his_o three_o answer_n will_v do_v that_o which_o be_v this_o if_o by_o extension_n of_o grace_n i_o do_v conceive_v that_o ever_o god_n accept_v any_o into_o the_o covenant_n of_o everlasting_a life_n as_o the_o fleshly_a seed_n of_o abraham_n without_o inherent_a faith_n and_o thereupon_o conclude_v that_o much_o more_o now_o be_v the_o seed_n of_o believer_n take_v into_o the_o covenant_n by_o their_o parent_n faith_n i_o err_v and_o he_o absolute_o deny_v any_o such_o thing_n then_o or_o now_o etc._n etc._n now_o in_o the_o covenant_n the_o grace_n of_o god_n be_v straighten_a because_o then_o infant_n be_v second_o that_o infant_n be_v then_o in_o the_o covenant_n be_v not_o can_v be_v deny_v that_o the_o covenant_n on_o god_n part_v dispense_v be_v the_o covenant_n of_o everlasting_a life_n be_v evident_a because_o it_o be_v a_o offer_n of_o god_n unto_o they_o to_o become_v their_o god_n and_o their_o seed_n god_n to_o bless_v they_o with_o the_o forgiveness_n of_o sin_n in_o his_o son_n call_v the_o righteousness_n of_o faith_n though_o it_o be_v not_o a_o covenant_n of_o life_n to_o all_o through_o their_o own_o default_n and_o they_o will_v be_v guilty_a of_o refuse_v everlasting_a life_n offer_v unto_o they_o that_o all_o infant_n have_v not_o inherent_a faith_n in_o they_o when_o they_o be_v infant_n and_o yet_o accept_v of_o god_n into_o covenant_n of_o everlasting_a life_n to_o work_v that_o faith_n in_o they_o yea_o though_o elect_v as_o paul_n for_o instance_n but_o have_v it_o wrought_v in_o they_o afterward_o by_o god_n in_o the_o mean_a he_o vouchsafe_v and_o that_o from_o and_o according_a to_o the_o covenant_n he_o have_v take_v they_o into_o and_o if_o god_n then_o do_v thus_o dispense_v his_o grace_n as_o to_o take_v infant_n into_o that_o covenant_n the_o covenant_n of_o everlasting_a life_n not_o have_v inherent_a faith_n in_o themselves_o but_o that_o he_o may_v work_v it_o in_o they_o then_o if_o now_o infant_n be_v exclude_v it_o argue_v that_o god_n grace_n be_v not_o so_o large_a as_o it_o be_v then_o he_o do_v not_o give_v himself_o to_o be_v the_o god_n of_o our_o infant_n to_o bless_v they_o in_o his_o son_n as_o he_o do_v give_v himself_o to_o they_o to_o be_v the_o god_n of_o their_o infant_n for_o to_o bless_v they_o that_o god_n receive_v none_o of_o abraham_n posterity_n into_o any_o covenant_n as_o his_o fleshly_a seed_n and_o in_o that_o respect_n because_o they_o be_v so_o be_v so_o certain_a that_o i_o conceive_v it_o to_o be_v a_o certain_a error_n to_o affirm_v it_o abraham_n be_v set_v forth_o as_o the_o father_n of_o all_o nation_n in_o that_o transaction_n between_o god_n and_o he_o and_o not_o as_o the_o father_n of_o the_o jew_n only_o who_o be_v his_o fleshly_a seed_n nor_o do_v i_o think_v that_o infant_n now_o be_v receive_v into_o covenant_n as_o fleshly_a seed_n of_o gentile_n nor_o by_o their_o parent_n faith_n as_o be_v any_o cause_n of_o it_o but_o only_o as_o isaac_n etc._n etc._n be_v of_o old_a by_o god_n free_a grace_n take_v the_o believe_a parent_n with_o their_o child_n into_o a_o covenant_n in_o who_o he_o work_v faith_n to_o close_o with_o he_o and_o undertake_v to_o work_v the_o same_o in_o their_o child_n after_o for_o which_o purpose_n be_v take_v hold_v of_o they_o by_o his_o covenant_n and_o let_v all_o that_o know_v the_o truth_n judge_v whether_o he_o or_o i_o do_v err_v i_o in_o affirm_v or_o he_o deny_v these_o thing_n though_o he_o do_v it_o never_o
so_o absolute_o last_o of_o all_o to_o this_o consectary_n which_o i_o add_v that_o there_o be_v nothing_o then_o in_o the_o state_n of_o person_n to_o interest_n infant_n in_o the_o covenant_n more_o than_o now_o he_o give_v this_o answer_n though_o there_o be_v nothing_o in_o the_o state_n of_o person_n yet_o there_o be_v something_o in_o thing_n and_o order_n of_o time_n christ_n be_v yet_o to_o come_v and_o here_o he_o conclude_v two_o thing_n first_o that_o the_o whole_a fleshly_a seed_n of_o abraham_n separate_v by_o ceremonial_a holiness_n be_v a_o type_n of_o christ_n to_o come_v and_o therefore_o infant_n then_o in_o the_o covenant_n and_o but_o ceremonial_o holy_a second_o that_o christ_n the_o thing_n typify_v be_v come_v all_o that_o typical_a state_n be_v utter_o abolish_v etc._n etc._n infant_n now_o not_o to_o be_v in_o it_o reply_n first_o i_o deny_v that_o the_o fleshly_a seed_n of_o abraham_n be_v a_o type_n of_o christ_n and_o have_v speak_v to_o it_o before_o and_o do_v conceive_v it_o a_o very_a erroneous_a conceit_n and_o full_a of_o absurdity_n second_o we_o must_v then_o exclude_v grow_v man_n also_o upon_o the_o same_o ground_n from_o the_o covenant_n and_o baptism_n now_o for_o if_o they_o be_v a_o type_n therefore_o child_n then_o in_o covenant_n and_o circumcise_a but_o now_o not_o in_o covenant_n and_o baptize_v man_n also_o be_v a_o part_n of_o the_o type_n must_v now_o not_o be_v in_o covenant_n nor_o be_v baptize_v or_o else_o infant_n may_v three_o all_o proselyte_n can_v not_o be_v a_o type_n of_o christ_n because_o not_o of_o the_o fleshly_a seed_n of_o abraham_n nor_o abraham_n and_o his_o family_n with_o all_o those_o succeed_a till_o moses_n time_n because_o the_o ceremonial_a ordinance_n be_v not_o yet_o institute_v nor_o do_v the_o circumstance_n of_o thing_n and_o time_n put_v any_o essential_a difference_n between_o they_o and_o we_o it_o be_v the_o same_o christ_n then_o by_o those_o thing_n and_o in_o that_o time_n dispense_v that_o be_v now_o by_o these_o thing_n and_o in_o this_o time_n not_o any_o other_o nor_o any_o thing_n else_o but_o i_o have_v say_v enough_o for_o this_o in_o some_o reply_n before_o and_o so_o much_o to_o his_o answer_n to_o my_o second_o reason_n a_o three_o reason_n whereby_o i_o prove_v infant_n to_o be_v in_o the_o covenant_n now_o as_o they_o be_v then_o be_v this_o as_o he_o have_v set_v it_o down_o for_o i_o can_v remember_v that_o i_o use_v it_o here_o abraham_n be_v the_o root_n and_o jew_n and_o gentile_n the_o branch_n as_o when_o the_o jew_n be_v break_v off_o as_o well_o infant_n as_o man_n of_o year_n be_v break_v off_o so_o the_o gentile_n be_v plant_v in_o their_o stead_n they_o must_v be_v infant_n as_o well_o as_o man_n of_o year_n and_o so_o the_o jew_n when_o they_o shall_v be_v again_o implant_v as_o well_o infant_n as_o man_n of_o year_n shall_v be_v so_o to_o this_o he_o answer_v first_o he_o conceive_v christ_n to_o be_v the_o root_n here_o mean_v reply_n then_o they_o be_v in_o christ_n with_o of_o and_z from_o infant_n also_o without_o actual_a faith_n or_o unbelief_n again_o that_o christ_n be_v the_o root_n of_o abraham_n himself_o and_o all_o else_o i_o question_v not_o but_o that_o christ_n be_v not_o mean_v here_o rom._n 11.4_o i_o be_o confident_a and_o no_o man_n will_v affirm_v that_o read_v the_o chapter_n with_o understanding_n rom._n 11.28_o they_o be_v say_v to_o be_v belove_v for_o the_o father_n sake_n not_o that_o abraham_n or_o christ_n be_v equal_o a_o root_n or_o at_o all_o in_o the_o same_o respect_n and_o sense_n but_o in_o a_o diverse_a christ_n the_o real_a and_o efficient_a root_n abraham_n but_o federal_o and_o in_o regard_n of_o god_n covenant_n make_v with_o he_o as_o a_o father_n of_o many_o nation_n but_o i_o shall_v say_v no_o more_o hereto_o because_o himself_o admit_v it_o and_o answer_v second_o the_o gentile_n be_v not_o branch_n in_o a_o natural_a relation_n nor_o the_o jew_n branch_n in_o a_o spiritual_a relation_n but_o by_o personal_a faith_n to_o make_v jew_n and_o gentile_n equal_o branch_n therefore_o of_o the_o root_n of_o abraham_n we_o must_v make_v the_o relation_n spiritual_a which_o be_v proper_a to_o they_o both_o reply_n first_o he_o contradict_v himself_o in_o these_o word_n say_v the_o jew_n be_v not_o branch_n by_o a_o spiritual_a relation_n and_o yet_o they_o and_o the_o gentile_n can_v be_v equal_o branch_n but_o by_o a_o spiritual_a relation_n further_n if_o he_o mean_v by_o faith_n personal_a habitual_a as_o well_o as_o actual_a and_o exclude_v not_o habitual_a i_o consent_v for_o infant_n may_v have_v habitual_a that_o can_v have_v actual_a while_o infant_n and_o many_o man_n may_v seem_v to_o have_v actual_a save_a faith_n that_o have_v not_o true_a save_v habitual_a faith_n second_o if_o he_o mean_v by_o spiritual_a relation_n foederall_n i_o also_o grant_v what_o he_o say_v but_o if_o he_o mean_v by_o personal_a faith_n actual_a and_o by_o spiritual_a save_v faith_n i_o reply_v all_o the_o jew_n have_v not_o actual_a faith_n then_o nor_o gentile_n now_o who_o yet_o profess_v actual_a faith_n then_o and_o now_o nor_o have_v infant_n their_o actual_a faith_n no_o more_o than_o they_o can_v have_v now_o and_o yet_o they_o be_v branch_n of_o the_o olive_n then_o which_o he_o conclude_v can_v be_v but_o by_o personal_a faith_n it_o be_v not_o by_o natural_a relation_n which_o now_o gentile_n infant_n may_v have_v as_o well_o as_o they_o have_v or_o whatsoever_o else_o those_o infant_n have_v whereby_o those_o infant_n be_v branohe_n of_o their_o own_o olive_n tree_n to_o that_o i_o say_v that_o when_o the_o jew_n be_v break_v off_o as_o well_o infant_n as_o man_n of_o year_n be_v break_v off_o he_o answer_v it_o be_v true_a because_o the_o natural_a relation_n in_o the_o covenant_n cease_v when_o christ_n the_o promise_a seed_n come_v and_o now_o there_o be_v no_o relation_n in_o the_o covenant_n with_o abraham_n but_o by_o faith_n in_o christ_n reply_n first_o this_o contradict_v that_o which_o in_o the_o forego_n answer_v he_o seem_v to_o set_v down_o that_o there_o must_v be_v such_o a_o spiritual_a relation_n as_o be_v possible_a to_o they_o both_o and_o that_o be_v faith_n for_o no_o otherwise_o can_v the_o jew_n and_o gentile_n suit_n nor_o can_v they_o have_v be_v break_v off_o by_o unbelief_n which_o make_v not_o the_o jew_n cease_v to_o have_v a_o natural_a relation_n to_o abraham_n unless_o faith_n be_v require_v of_o they_o and_o yet_o here_o he_o say_v they_o be_v in_o covenant_n by_o natural_a relation_n second_o the_o jew_n be_v not_o in_o covenant_n by_o natural_a relation_n and_o as_o a_o type_n of_o christ_n which_o he_o say_v before_o and_o i_o have_v disprove_v but_o abraham_n be_v the_o father_n of_o jew_n and_o gentile_n as_o he_o believe_v and_o they_o his_o child_n as_o believe_v and_o no_o otherwise_o as_o be_v clear_a rom._n to_o this_o be_v that_o the_o covenant_n of_o god_n make_v the_o church_n but_o that_o any_o can_v be_v conclude_v to_o have_v a_o outward_a be_v in_o the_o covenant_n of_o the_o gospel_n now_o if_o baptism_n be_v the_o form_n of_o a_o church_n then_o by_o the_o same_o reason_n she_o may_v receive_v the_o form_n without_o all_o administration_n of_o the_o gospel_n for_o the_o future_a i_o conceive_v it_o will_v be_v absurd_a to_o affirm_v it_o there_o be_v nothing_o in_o what_o he_o say_v therefore_o worth_a answer_v and_o the_o same_o have_v be_v say_v and_o answer_v before_o second_o he_o say_v god_n have_v appoint_v no_o such_o thing_n for_o man_n to_o act_v such_o a_o covenant_n for_o any_o such_o end_n and_o therefore_o so_o to_o do_v be_v will-worship_n invention_n of_o man_n and_o in_o god_n worship_n plain_a superstition_n and_o flat_a breach_n of_o the_o second_o commandment_n and_o therefore_o if_o it_o be_v the_o form_n of_o a_o church_n it_o be_v a_o superstitious_a church_n which_o be_v so_o form_v by_o such_o a_o superstitious_a action_n reply_n i_o grant_v all_o humane_a invention_n in_o god_n worship_n be_v sinful_a superstitious_a and_o flat_a breach_n of_o may_v be_v with_o ignorance_n both_o of_o the_o nature_n and_o duty_n of_o a_o true_a church_n as_o be_v prove_v by_o presuppose_v it_o to_o be_v the_o form_n of_o the_o church_n before_o baptism_n may_v not_o go_v together_o but_o the_o covenant_n must_v proceed_v in_o order_n of_o nature_n and_o time_n baptism_n be_v but_o the_o seal_n of_o it_o and_o be_v but_o a_o idol_n with_o out_o it_o the_o covenant_n make_v they_o capable_a of_o baptism_n and_o nothing_o else_o and_o baptism_n be_v a_o visible_a and_o outward_a seal_n it_o must_v needs_o be_v a_o outward_a and_o visible_a
