speak_v the_o truth_n what_o peace_n or_o comfort_n can_v there_o be_v in_o these_o thing_n when_o man_n be_v own_o knowledge_n both_o before_o &_o after_o regeneration_n shall_v within_o himself_o have_v certainty_n adjoin_v with_o it_o for_o though_o we_o will_v not_o deny_v but_o that_o sometime_o in_o the_o latin_a tongue_n the_o word_n to_o think_v be_v doubt_o use_v yet_o we_o shall_v find_v in_o good_a and_o approve_a author_n that_o very_o often_o it_o signify_v after_o the_o propound_v of_o diverse_a opinion_n and_o sentence_n to_o choose_v out_o that_o which_o a_o man_n will_v affirm_v and_o maintain_v and_o so_o we_o doubt_v of_o it_o in_o this_o place_n it_o impli_v not_o a_o doubtful_a and_o uncerten_a imagination_n for_o in_o a_o matter_n of_o so_o great_a importance_n the_o apostle_n will_v not_o deal_v so_o sleighte_o with_o the_o church_n and_o the_o member_n of_o it_o but_o a_o assure_a and_o steadfast_a affirmation_n which_o as_o yet_o may_v appear_v by_o the_o nature_n of_o the_o greek_a word_n above_o mention_v so_o i_o think_v it_o be_v confirm_v by_o the_o weight_n of_o the_o cause_n or_o matter_n the_o the_o apostle_n have_v in_o hand_n which_o be_v free_a justification_n through_o faith_n in_o christ_n of_o which_o howsoever_o sometime_o some_o good_a man_n in_o the_o weakness_n of_o their_o faith_n and_o behold_v of_o their_o own_o unworthiness_n may_v or_o do_v doubt_n yet_o the_o doctrine_n of_o it_o be_v be_v and_o ever_o shall_v be_v most_o sure_a and_o stable_a and_o therefore_o unless_o they_o will_v continual_o confound_v the_o term_n of_o doubt_v and_o think_v this_o text_n or_o testimony_n will_v do_v they_o no_o good_a and_o if_o it_o shall_v be_v of_o such_o a_o doubtful_a signification_n always_o then_o must_v it_o so_o likewise_o in_o all_o place_n for_o that_o which_o be_v so_o at_o all_o time_n be_v the_o same_o every_o where_n and_o can_v be_v vary_v as_o in_o respect_n of_o difference_n or_o distance_n this_o present_a time_n be_v not_o worthy_a of_o the_o glory_n which_o shall_v be_v show_v unto_o us._n what_o shall_v we_o think_v that_o the_o apostle_n doubt_v of_o this_o point_n whether_o that_o our_o suffering_n here_o and_o the_o glory_n to_o be_v reveal_v in_o the_o life_n to_o come_v be_v unequal_a sure_o he_o know_v and_o feel_v well_o enough_o the_o great_a odds_n and_o difference_n a_o party_n between_o the_o suffering_n of_o all_o or_o any_o of_o the_o saint_n and_o the_o infinite_a and_o incomprehensible_a joy_n of_o eternal_a life_n beside_o what_o logician_n be_v there_o that_o see_v not_o that_o there_o be_v in_o this_o argument_n falacia_fw-la homo_fw-la nymias_fw-la that_o be_v as_o we_o may_v say_v of_o the_o equivocation_n or_o doubtful_a and_o diverse_a signification_n of_o the_o word_n to_o think_v which_o though_o sometime_o &_o in_o some_o place_n it_o may_v signify_v to_o doubt_v &_o yet_o that_o have_v be_v show_v on_o this_o part_n yet_o here_o for_o the_o reason_n above_o allege_v it_o must_v signify_v certainty_n and_o assurednes_n though_o not_o of_o the_o feel_n of_o this_o truth_n always_o in_o the_o heart_n and_o mind_n of_o the_o godly_a who_o sometime_o feel_v it_o and_o sometime_o not_o yet_o of_o truth_n and_o certainty_n of_o the_o doctrine_n itself_o which_o can_v be_v no_o more_o uncerten_a then_o god_n himself_o from_o who_o it_o commteh_a or_o they_o the_o spirit_n itself_o by_o which_o the_o apostle_n preach_v &_o deliver_v the_o same_o to_o conclude_v this_o be_v the_o plain_a meaning_n of_o the_o apostle_n that_o from_o the_o former_a disputation_n or_o point_n that_o before_o have_v be_v handle_v he_o do_v necessary_o gather_v &_o fine_o conclude_v that_o a_o christian_n or_o faithful_a man_n be_v justify_v through_o faith_n in_o christ_n and_o not_o by_o the_o work_n of_o the_o law_n and_o good_a reason_n he_o shall_v conclude_v so_o out_o of_o the_o premise_n for_o he_o have_v before_o evince_v &_o prove_v this_o that_o all_o man_n whether_o they_o be_v jew_n or_o gentile_n the_o gentile_n without_o the_o law_n &_o the_o jew_n by_o &_o under_o the_o law_n be_v sinner_n and_o transgressor_n of_o the_o law_n &_o therefore_o destitute_a &_o void_a of_o righteousness_n in_o &_o of_o themselves_o &_o righteous_a they_o must_v be_v if_o they_o will_v be_v save_v but_o that_o they_o can_v not_o be_v without_o christ_n righteousness_n &_o the_o same_o apprehend_v by_o faith_n only_o and_o therefore_o
election_n be_v approve_v to_o other_o and_o seal_v up_o in_o ourselves_o and_o since_o this_o be_v the_o only_a way_n into_o christ_n eternal_a kingdom_n of_o which_o he_o speak_v verse_n 11._o take_v of_o they_o that_o be_v indeed_o godly_a and_o in_o some_o measure_n very_o well_o able_a to_o discern_v in_o both_o which_o respect_v peter_n no_o doubt_n of_o it_o be_v a_o rare_a man_n and_o to_o say_v the_o gift_n and_o call_n of_o god_n be_v such_o as_o he_o can_v not_o or_o will_v not_o repent_v himself_o of_o rom._n 11._o the_o word_n of_o make_v sure_a be_v not_o as_o in_o respect_n of_o god_n for_o all_o thing_n that_o he_o have_v determine_v from_o before_o all_o time_n be_v certain_a and_o sure_a &_o shall_v be_v accomplish_v in_o time_n but_o as_o in_o respect_n of_o other_o man_n and_o of_o ourselves_o who_o may_v easy_o be_v draw_v but_o whether_o well_o yea_o or_o no_o that_o be_v the_o question_n to_o suspect_v ourselves_o and_o to_o pronounce_v hard_a sentence_n against_o other_o in_o the_o sin_n we_o commit_v the_o apostle_n show_v that_o this_o be_v one_o good_a mean_a either_o quite_o and_o clean_o to_o remove_v that_o temptation_n or_o so_o to_o mitigate_v it_o as_o it_o shall_v never_o master_v we_o studious_o careful_o and_o diligent_o to_o follow_v sanctification_n and_o holiness_n without_o which_o no_o man_n shall_v see_v god_n wherefore_o rather_o certain_o then_o doubt_v may_v be_v crawne_v and_o gather_v out_o of_o this_o place_n for_o if_o faithful_a people_n shall_v diligent_o and_o careful_o labour_n to_o make_v ellection_n be_v sure_a and_o so_o remain_v as_o the_o apostle_n say_v rom._n 9.11_o but_o as_o in_o respect_n of_o ourselves_o and_o our_o neighbour_n for_o by_o the_o work_n that_o god_n command_v in_o his_o law_n of_o which_o no_o doubt_n of_o it_o the_o apostle_n peter_n treat_v in_o this_o place_n we_o may_v as_o upon_o outward_a testimony_n fruit_n and_o effect_n certain_o conclude_v concern_v faith_n and_o by_o faith_n determine_v touch_v the_o spirit_n of_o god_n that_o dwell_v in_o we_o and_o so_o by_o consequent_a also_o concern_v our_o call_n &_o election_n for_o which_o purpose_n see_v romans_z 5.9.14_o 1._o john_n 3_o 24._o and_o contrariwise_o also_o as_o appear_v mat._n 7.16.17_o etc._n etc._n indeed_o i_o confess_v that_o this_o proof_n and_o confirmation_n of_o they_o be_v not_o the_o first_o or_o principal_n for_o that_o be_v the_o inward_a testimony_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n bearing_z record_n unto_o our_o spirit_n that_o we_o be_v the_o son_n of_o god_n but_o yet_o it_o be_v a_o secondary_a one_o as_o i_o may_v say_v by_o which_o we_o may_v not_o only_o probable_o but_o charitable_o gather_v of_o other_o that_o believe_v and_o certain_o conclude_v time_n dash_v we_o in_o ourselves_o &_o yet_o not_o take_v a_o way_n from_o we_o for_o ever_o all_o hope_n to_o speed_n which_o in_o deed_n be_v doubt_v or_o distrust_n but_o to_o the_o place_n itself_o the_o purpose_n of_o the_o apostle_n be_v as_o i_o take_v it_o that_o the_o grace_n of_o adoption_n and_o newenesse_n of_o life_n which_o god_n vouchsafe_v unto_o we_o must_v be_v testify_v as_o unto_o a_o menstruous_a and_o pollute_a thing_n depart_v hence_o and_o get_v away_o 4_o in_o the_o four_o place_n they_o reason_n thus_o s._n paul_n say_v 1._o corinth_n 4._o i_o know_v nothing_o by_o myself_o yet_o be_o i_o not_o thereby_o justify_v for_o he_o that_o judge_v i_o be_v the_o lord_n therefore_o paul_n be_v not_o assure_v concern_v his_o own_o justification_n but_o hereunto_o we_o answer_v first_o that_o this_o argument_n even_o as_o the_o former_a also_o will_v rather_o have_v be_v place_v with_o the_o reason_n draw_v from_o holy_a scripture_n because_o as_o we_o see_v they_o be_v take_v therefrom_o then_o place_v among_o the_o argument_n that_o man_n make_v to_o establish_v that_o error_n but_o we_o will_v easy_o omit_v that_o escape_n and_o not_o insist_v upon_o that_o point_n as_o not_o much_o material_a second_o we_o say_v that_o the_o reason_n be_v but_o from_o example_n which_o though_o here_o it_o may_v be_v good_a and_o in_o some_o other_o particular_a case_n yet_o be_v not_o always_o good_a no_o not_o in_o good_a man_n because_o now_o we_o may_v say_v even_o as_o the_o apostle_n say_v in_o a_o other_o place_n &_o another_o case_n also_o we_o know_v no_o more_o now_o after_o the_o flesh_n no_o not_o christ_n jesus_n and_o when_o they_o be_v at_o the_o best_a and_o high_a they_o be_v rather_o argument_n of_o persuasion_n to_o lead_v man_n to_o do_v the_o like_a then_o sound_a &_o sufficient_a reason_n to_o prove_v the_o lawfulness_n of_o the_o thing_n for_o which_o they_o be_v allege_v but_o we_o will_v let_v this_o also_o go_v &_o follow_v that_o which_o be_v of_o more_o weight_n and_o importance_n as_o for_o this_o argument_n if_o we_o know_v or_o understand_v right_o what_o the_o apostle_n mean_v by_o these_o word_n it_o be_v or_o will_v be_v easy_o absolve_v for_o the_o knot_n be_v not_o so_o hard_o twist_v or_o tie_v as_o they_o imagine_v it_o seem_v unto_o man_n that_o as_o verse_n 1._o of_o the_o 4._o chap._n he_o have_v put_v the_o people_n in_o mind_n of_o their_o duty_n towards_o their_o minister_n namely_o that_o though_o they_o may_v not_o account_v they_o lord_n and_o ruler_n yet_o they_o shall_v esteem_v they_o as_o such_o who_o christ_n have_v send_v even_o by_o their_o hand_n to_o deliver_v unto_o they_o the_o treasure_n &_o hide_a secret_n of_o god_n kingdom_n and_o salvation_n so_o in_o the_o next_o verse_n he_o have_v tell_v the_o minister_n &_o preacher_n of_o the_o word_n what_o be_v their_o duty_n namely_o that_o in_o the_o execution_n of_o their_o charge_n they_o shall_v carry_v themselves_o not_o as_o lord_n but_o as_o servant_n yea_o as_o faithful_a servant_n who_o must_v one_o day_n render_v a_o account_n for_o the_o discharge_n of_o their_o duty_n to_o god_n and_o because_o he_o have_v set_v forth_o himself_o as_o a_o example_n &_o yet_o many_o of_o the_o corinthian_n regard_v he_o not_o but_o esteem_v he_o as_o a_o base_a person_n he_o do_v verse_n 3._o use_v a_o prevention_n that_o he_o little_a or_o nothing_o at_o all_o stay_v upon_o the_o contrary_a judgement_n that_o they_o have_v of_o he_o and_o lest_o he_o may_v be_v think_v to_o have_v speak_v this_o without_o reason_n he_o show_v diverse_a reason_n why_o he_o esteem_v not_o their_o perverse_a and_o corrupt_a judgement_n concern_v himself_o the_o first_o be_v that_o when_o man_n judge_v in_o these_o matter_n according_a to_o their_o own_o brain_n and_o understanding_n it_o ought_v to_o be_v account_v of_o no_o great_a weight_n then_o if_o ignorant_a man_n shall_v take_v upon_o they_o to_o judge_v of_o learning_n and_o wisdom_n or_o of_o wise_a and_o learned_a man_n &_o this_o be_v contain_v in_o the_o latter_a part_n of_o verse_n 3._o the_o second_o be_v take_v from_o his_o own_o person_n and_o they_o together_o as_o if_o he_o shall_v say_v how_o be_v you_o able_a to_o judge_v what_o manner_n of_o man_n i_o be_o in_o the_o execution_n of_o my_o ministry_n since_o i_o myself_o who_o by_o all_o probability_n shall_v in_o that_o behalf_n better_o know_v myself_o than_o you_o can_v yea_o in_o a_o good_a conscience_n can_v testify_v before_o god_n and_o man_n that_o in_o that_o charge_n i_o have_v in_o some_o good_a measure_n upright_o behave_v myself_o dare_v not_o yet_o therefore_o arrogate_v any_o thing_n to_o myself_o for_o i_o know_v that_o yet_o i_o be_o not_o for_o all_o that_o unblameable_a special_o before_o god_n or_o that_o i_o shall_v please_v and_o flatter_v myself_o as_o you_o do_v and_o this_o be_v the_o argument_n that_o the_o apostle_n use_v in_o this_o 4._o verse_n what_o be_v here_o against_o the_o certainty_n of_o paul_n justification_n before_o god_n or_o the_o assurednes_n of_o his_o heart_n as_o in_o that_o respect_n he_o show_v they_o can_v not_o judge_v he_o because_o he_o himself_o be_v not_o able_a thorough_o and_o exact_o to_o discern_v himself_o must_v he_o therefore_o doubt_v of_o his_o righteousness_n and_o salvation_n before_o god_n sure_o it_o will_v not_o follow_v for_o first_o beside_o that_o god_n and_o man_n differ_v it_o be_v not_o safe_a to_o infer_v upon_o a_o godly_a man_n debase_v of_o himself_o for_o some_o respect_n before_o man_n his_o doubt_v in_o the_o sight_n of_o god_n or_o his_o distrustfulness_n of_o his_o mercy_n towards_o he_o many_o a_o man_n debase_v himself_o before_o god_n and_o yet_o have_v hope_n in_o his_o heart_n yea_o the_o more_o for_o that_o because_o god_n resist_v the_o proud_a &_o presumptuous_a and_o give_v grace_n to_o the_o lowly_a and_o meek_a as_o the_o not_o contrary_a to_o itself_o shall_v declare_v it_o for_o sure_o the_o apostle_n here_o doubt_v not_o whether_o the_o newene_n of_o life_n &_o good_a work_n which_o he_o be_v renew_v have_v do_v be_v seal_n &_o pledge_n unto_o he_o of_o this_o that_o he_o be_v justify_v before_o god_n but_o plain_o &_o simple_o deni_v that_o by_o they_o he_o be_v justify_v which_o as_o we_o may_v confirm_v by_o a_o other_o place_n of_o the_o apostle_n phil._n 3._o when_o he_o say_v that_o he_o have_v no_o confidence_n in_o the_o flesh_n &_o that_o if_o any_o other_o man_n think_v he_o have_v aught_o whereof_o he_o may_v trust_v in_o the_o flesh_n much_o more_o he_o who_o touch_v the_o righteousness_n which_o be_v in_o the_o law_n be_v unrebukeable_a some_o think_v it_o stand_v upon_o religious_a his_o sake_n and_o always_o both_o in_o mind_n and_o mouth_n to_o have_v that_o worthy_a say_n of_o the_o prophet_n rise_v with_o we_o enter_v not_o into_o judgement_n with_o thy_o servant_n o_o lord_n for_o then_o no_o flesh_n shall_v be_v righteouse_a in_o thy_o sight_n and_o that_o of_o the_o apostle_n 1._o cor._n 4._o i_o know_v nothing_o by_o myself_o and_o yet_o i_o be_o not_o just_a or_o justify_v for_o all_o that_o one_o the_o other_o side_n it_o be_v not_o humility_n as_o they_o suppose_v but_o arrogancy_n and_o indeed_o contempt_n of_o god_n and_o heavenly_a promise_n not_o to_o give_v credit_n to_o or_o not_o to_o believe_v these_o sweet_a promise_n and_o therefore_o saint_n john_n say_v he_o that_o believe_v not_o god_n have_v make_v he_o a_o liar_n 1._o john_n 5.10_o and_o we_o may_v see_v a_o memorable_a example_n of_o it_o in_o ahaz_n isaiah_n 7._o who_o refuse_v a_o sign_n give_v unto_o he_o from_o god_n but_o they_o press_v this_o further_a &_o say_v it_o be_v a_o token_n of_o humility_n to_o acknowledge_v our_o infirmity_n and_o sin_n and_o who_o will_v deny_v that_o that_o have_v any_o fault_n or_o savour_n in_o he_o of_o godliness_n but_o on_o the_o other_o side_n who_o know_v not_o that_o humility_n and_o doubt_v differ_v as_o much_o as_o vice_n &_o virtue_n or_o what_o man_n unless_o he_o be_v mad_a not_o only_o without_o reason_n but_o against_o godliness_n will_v suppose_v that_o our_o true_a humility_n shall_v destroy_v confidence_n boldness_n or_o faith_n concern_v god_n grace_n forgiveness_n of_o our_o sin_n and_o eternal_a salvation_n since_o our_o humility_n be_v as_o other_o good_a thing_n in_o we_o the_o fruit_n of_o the_o faith_n if_o man_n do_v sound_o understand_v what_o humility_n be_v they_o will_v doubtless_o be_v of_o another_o mind_n they_o conclude_v so_o this_o be_v humility_n not_o only_o true_o to_o fear_n god_n as_o a_o judge_n and_o so_o to_o acknowledge_v in_o his_o sight_n our_o sin_n and_o infirmity_n but_o also_o to_o fly_v unto_o jesus_n christ_n and_o to_o stay_v in_o his_o all_o sufficient_a satisfaction_n do_v this_o overthrow_n a_o poor_a man_n poverty_n that_o he_o beg_v a_o alm_n for_o god_n sake_n as_o we_o say_v or_o do_v this_o destroy_v a_o weak_a man_n weakness_n that_o he_o seek_v for_o shelter_n and_o defence_n at_o the_o hand_n of_o the_o strong_a or_o do_v this_o take_v away_o a_o sick_a man_n sickness_n that_o he_o lay_v it_o open_a to_o the_o physician_n and_o require_v medicine_n no_o very_o but_o rather_o argue_v poverty_n weakness_n sickness_n etc._n etc._n and_o so_o do_v our_o humility_n but_o let_v we_o go_v forward_o 9_o the_o nine_o argument_n be_v this_o where_o there_o be_v unworthiness_n there_o can_v be_v assurance_n of_o god_n grace_n of_o forgiveness_n of_o sin_n and_o of_o salvation_n but_o still_o there_o must_v be_v doubt_v but_o in_o they_o that_o be_v turn_v to_o god_n there_o be_v great_a unworthiness_n while_o they_o know_v not_o whether_o they_o have_v sufficient_o and_o worthy_o prepare_v themselves_o and_o perform_v all_o the_o covenant_n and_o condition_n that_o god_n have_v prescribe_v therefore_o etc._n etc._n the_o proposition_n or_o mayor_n of_o this_o argument_n be_v very_o false_a because_o the_o behold_n or_o feel_v of_o our_o own_o unworthiness_n do_v no_o more_o work_n doubt_v much_o less_o distrustfulness_n in_o the_o heart_n of_o god_n people_n then_o feel_v of_o outward_a want_n make_v natural_a man_n careless_a of_o a_o supply_n it_o be_v a_o grace_n of_o god_n to_o be_v well_o acquaint_v with_o our_o own_o unworthiness_n yea_o such_o a_o grace_n as_o god_n only_o bestow_v upon_o his_o own_o child_n that_o so_o in_o the_o behold_n and_o sight_n thereof_o they_o may_v more_o earnest_o seek_v after_o and_o be_v more_o fruitful_o make_v partaker_n of_o the_o exceed_a riches_n of_o his_o mercy_n whereas_o the_o wicked_a of_o the_o world_n be_v either_o cease_v with_o benumbedness_n and_o senslesness_n of_o their_o own_o unworthiness_n and_o good_a reason_n thereof_o because_o they_o feel_v not_o sin_n or_o else_o see_v it_o in_o judgement_n and_o condemnation_n and_o that_o we_o may_v be_v the_o better_o assure_v of_o the_o truth_n of_o this_o point_n namely_o that_o the_o feel_n of_o the_o indignity_n of_o god_n people_n have_v neither_o wrought_v doubt_v in_o themselves_o nor_o cause_v god_n the_o less_o but_o more_o rather_o to_o esteem_v they_o we_o have_v many_o memorable_a example_n but_o for_o the_o present_a we_o will_v content_v ourselves_o his_o own_o unworthiness_n or_o can_v he_o taste_v or_o tell_v how_o sweet_a the_o lord_n be_v in_o his_o mercy_n that_o be_v not_o well_o acquaint_v with_o his_o own_o misery_n if_o any_o man_n think_v so_o he_o be_v foul_o deceive_v nay_o we_o will_v say_v more_o that_o where_o unworthines_n be_v most_o feel_v there_o be_v offer_v unto_o godly_a man_n the_o best_a mean_n of_o certainty_n and_o assurance_n not_o only_o because_o the_o scripture_n say_v where_o sin_n have_v abound_v their_o grace_n have_v abound_v much_o more_o but_o because_o god_n in_o his_o purpose_n and_o indeed_o reverent_o prepare_v themselves_o to_o the_o service_n of_o god_n that_o they_o fulfil_v not_o all_o nay_o not_o any_o in_o sort_n as_o they_o shall_v of_o the_o covenant_n condition_n or_o commandment_n of_o god_n etc._n etc._n but_o that_o they_o shall_v work_v doubt_v in_o they_o of_o god_n goodness_n &_o grace_n towards_o they_o that_o be_v the_o point_n we_o deny_v and_o they_o can_v never_o prove_v for_o doubt_v be_v not_o the_o proper_a &_o peculiar_a
desire_v you_o he_o speak_v of_o all_o the_o faithful_a under_o one_o man_n person_n or_o under_o the_o person_n of_o his_o disciple_n to_o win_v now_o you_o a_o wheat_n a_o hard_a and_o a_o heavy_a sentence_n but_o yet_o it_o must_v comfortable_o follow_v in_o the_o next_o word_n but_o i_o have_v pray_v for_o thou_o that_o thy_o faith_n fail_v not_o which_o thing_n he_o have_v do_v also_o even_o
