employ_v elsewhere_o a_o saint_n can_v be_v as_o cunning_n and_o as_o wise_a and_o worldly_a as_o thou_o but_o thou_o may_v easy_o steal_v any_o thing_n from_o he_o and_o cheat_v and_o cozen_v he_o to_o god_n this_o poor_a kingdom_n will_v be_v wise_a at_o last_o that_o if_o there_o be_v any_o business_n that_o require_v wisdom_n either_o in_o parliament_n or_o army_n or_o committee_n or_o city_n that_o they_o will_v put_v in_o godly_a man_n they_o have_v their_o dark_a lantern_n they_o can_v see_v through_o thing_n and_o will_v not_o be_v take_v with_o chaff_n as_o other_o may_v you_o see_v how_o god_n have_v prosper_v and_o bless_v they_o and_o how_o they_o have_v continue_v constant_a therefore_o i_o say_v henceforth_o let_v we_o not_o in_o any_o place_n or_o business_n look_v that_o be_v the_o conduit_n that_o receive_v it_o first_o from_o the_o reason_n it_o come_v to_o the_o will_n and_o affection_n and_o then_o it_o go_v out_o into_o the_o action_n so_o the_o reason_n of_o the_o mind_n be_v the_o first_o and_o chief_a and_o supreme_a part_n of_o all_o the_o action_n thereof_o therefore_o if_o the_o mind_n be_v naught_o the_o whole_a soul_n be_v naught_o if_o the_o reason_n be_v naught_o the_o whole_a soul_n and_o life_n be_v naught_o also_o but_o because_o i_o will_v pass_v from_o that_o the_o use_n of_o it_o in_o a_o word_n be_v this_o that_o hence_o we_o see_v the_o reason_n why_o the_o wise_a man_n the_o most_o rational_a man_n be_v usual_o the_o worst_a man_n because_o they_o have_v more_o strength_n of_o reason_n then_o other_o man_n the_o reason_n be_v corrupt_a and_o naught_o the_o strong_a that_o reason_n be_v the_o worse_a the_o man_n be_v therefore_o if_o i_o have_v a_o child_n or_o a_o friend_n that_o be_v a_o wicked_a man_n if_o he_o be_v not_o make_v a_o good_a man_n i_o wish_v he_o may_v never_o be_v very_o rational_a or_o reasonable_a because_o the_o strong_a his_o reason_n be_v be_v corrupt_a the_o more_o ill_o he_o be_v in_o his_o will_n and_o affection_n when_o man_n be_v mad_a with_o reason_n many_o of_o the_o vulgar_a be_v mad_a without_o reason_n they_o will_v hate_v a_o thing_n upon_o hear-say_n o_o such_o a_o one_o be_v a_o independent_a and_o this_o and_o that_o but_o when_o man_n be_v mad_a with_o reason_n when_o they_o have_v wicked_a reason_n they_o be_v mad_a to_o purpose_n they_o be_v mad_a with_o a_o vengeance_n as_o we_o say_v and_o that_o be_v the_o reason_n that_o the_o apostle_n say_v that_o the_o lord_n have_v not_o choose_v many_o wise_a nor_o many_o noble_a but_o simple_a people_n and_o simple_a thing_n god_n do_v not_o ordinary_o do_v it_o as_o now_o in_o the_o army_n fight_v abroad_o usual_o they_o do_v not_o take_v great_a strong_a garrison_n but_o little_a petty_a one_o be_v take_v to_o and_o again_o daily_o so_o not_o many_o wise_a man_n be_v call_v god_n take_v some_o strong_a garrison_n for_o it_o be_v a_o strong_a garrison_n of_o the_o devil_n when_o a_o great_a learned_a man_n be_v without_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n it_o be_v like_o portsmouth_n etc._n etc._n fortify_v strong_o god_n may_v take_v away_o the_o weapon_n of_o the_o devil_n and_o the_o principal_a ordnance_n he_o have_v be_v carnal_a reason_v but_o god_n do_v it_o not_o ordinary_o it_o be_v a_o say_v of_o a_o godly_a man_n and_o a_o rational_a one_o too_o he_o shake_v his_o head_n and_o say_v i_o wish_v many_o time_n in_o the_o year_n that_o i_o be_v deprive_v of_o this_o reason_n that_o be_v in_o i_o that_o i_o may_v be_v whole_o without_o reason_n that_o there_o may_v be_v liberty_n for_o faith_n to_o work_v he_o mean_v that_o natural_a reason_n come_v and_o hinder_v faith_n and_o cross_v spiritual_a reason_n reason_n be_v so_o troublesome_a if_o it_o be_v carnal_a and_o natural_a and_o unsanctified_a that_o the_o more_o any_o man_n have_v of_o it_o the_o more_o enemy_n he_o be_v to_o god_n therefore_o o_o that_o god_n will_v unbewitch_v and_o undeceive_v you_o and_o all_o the_o people_n of_o england_n that_o you_o will_v not_o make_v man_n your_o guide_n as_o they_o be_v endue_v with_o learning_n or_o reason_n but_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n go_v to_o any_o certain_a a_o character_n but_o when_o you_o say_v man_n be_v rational_a that_o distinguish_v he_o from_o all_o bird_n and_o beast_n so_o there_o be_v many_o thing_n in_o godliness_n that_o you_o may_v partly_o know_v a_o christian_a by_o by_o his_o work_n and_o affection_n and_o action_n and_o by_o his_o company_n and_o carriage_n you_o may_v know_v he_o a_o little_a from_o another_o man_n but_o these_o thing_n be_v outward_a and_o external_a but_o his_o reason_n be_v essential_a to_o he_o you_o may_v know_v he_o above_o all_o these_o by_o his_o reason_n in_o his_o soul_n that_o be_v the_o most_o essential_a thing_n to_o a_o christian_a as_o reason_n in_o itself_o consider_v be_v most_o essential_a to_o a_o man_n consider_v this_o for_o this_o be_v a_o thing_n by_o which_o you_o may_v understand_v clear_o what_o you_o be_v make_v of_o and_o what_o you_o be_v there_o be_v nothing_o in_o godliness_n but_o a_o hypocrite_n and_o a_o wicked_a man_n may_v come_v up_o to_o it_o godliness_n and_o to_o our_o eye_n of_o the_o spiritual_a estate_n of_o godliness_n heb._n 6._o he_o may_v be_v enlighten_v he_o may_v discourse_v well_o and_o preach_v excellent_o and_o pray_v spiritual_o he_o may_v have_v much_o knowledge_n and_o all_o the_o saint_n in_o the_o country_n may_v account_v he_o constant_o a_o chief_a professor_n and_o a_o most_o excellent_a christian_a nay_o he_o may_v love_v all_o good_a thing_n in_o a_o sort_n or_o for_o the_o most_o part_n a_o natural_a man_n that_o be_v but_o common_o wrought_v on_o by_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n he_o may_v love_v prayer_n and_o hear_v and_o read_v and_o give_v to_o the_o poor_a and_o other_o good_a work_n he_o may_v love_v and_o delight_n in_o it_o as_o herod_n do_v to_o hear_v john_n speak_v he_o may_v love_v it_o for_o some_o carnal_a circumstance_n about_o it_o and_o though_o he_o love_v it_o yet_o all_o run_v upon_o the_o wheel_n of_o carnal_a reason_n as_o for_o instance_n i_o love_v very_o much_o to_o give_v to_o the_o poor_a because_o the_o pride_n of_o my_o heart_n will_v be_v much_o satisfy_v in_o it_o i_o will_v be_v hold_v a_o eminent_a professor_n and_o i_o invite_v saint_n to_o my_o house_n and_o i_o quarrel_v with_o they_o if_o they_o come_v not_o but_o it_o be_v to_o hold_v out_o my_o vainglory_n not_o out_o of_o spiritual_a love_n in_o my_o soul_n so_o there_o be_v no_o piece_n of_o godliness_n but_o it_o may_v be_v clothe_v with_o such_o circumstance_n that_o a_o natural_a man_n may_v love_v it_o a_o hypocrite_n may_v do_v every_o thing_n in_o godliness_n and_o be_v a_o hypocrite_n when_o he_o have_v do_v but_o here_o be_v the_o difference_n a_o saint_n love_v good_a and_o that_o flow_v from_o spiritual_a reason_n and_o he_o do_v good_a from_o spiritual_a reason_n as_o for_o instance_n i_o do_v not_o give_v to_o the_o poor_a to_o keep_v correspondence_n and_o to_o be_v well_o think_v of_o and_o because_o i_o will_v be_v account_v such_o a_o professor_n no_o but_o i_o do_v it_o from_o spiritual_a reason_n christ_n love_v i_o and_o therefore_o i_o will_v love_v my_o brother_n so_o whatsoever_o a_o saint_n do_v spiritual_a reason_n draw_v he_o and_o this_o be_v the_o most_o essential_a character_n that_o distinguish_v a_o hypocrite_n from_o a_o true_a christian_a it_o be_v not_o love_v or_o know_v or_o do_v of_o good_a but_o it_o be_v the_o wheel_n that_o it_o go_v on_o whether_o it_o be_v spiritual_a or_o carnal_a reason_n quest_n but_o may_v not_o a_o good_a man_n do_v some_o action_n from_o natural_a or_o corrupt_a reason_n how_o be_v that_o then_o a_o sure_a character_n answ_n a_o good_a man_n may_v do_v a_o action_n from_o carnal_a reason_n but_o a_o carnal_a man_n can_v never_o do_v good_a from_o spiritual_a reason_n as_o that_o speech_n peter_n in_o advise_v of_o christ_n not_o to_o go_v to_o jerusalem_n it_o be_v partly_o natural_a and_o partly_o corrupt_a reason_n but_o that_o you_o may_v see_v this_o clear_o notwithstanding_o this_o you_o may_v discern_v he_o hereby_o that_o in_o the_o first_o place_n a_o christian_n be_v move_v by_o spiritual_a reason_n and_o in_o the_o second_o place_n he_o may_v be_v move_v by_o natural_a reason_n as_o suppose_v there_o be_v a_o good_a minister_n that_o be_v full_a of_o grace_n that_o desire_n to_o do_v good_a and_o yet_o he_o and_o his_o family_n be_v ready_a to_o starve_v the_o first_o thing_n that_o he_o bless_v god_n for_o be_v that_o he_o have_v opportunity_n to_o teach_v christ_n to_o the_o soul_n of_o poor_a people_n that_o be_v the_o first_o but_o next_o he_o say_v and_o bless_v be_v god_n that_o there_o be_v a_o way_n to_o support_v my_o family_n natural_a reason_n be_v tie_v to_o spritual_a as_o the_o little_a boat_n be_v to_o the_o ship_n 2._o second_o though_o a_o saint_n may_v be_v carry_v to_o a_o action_n with_o corrupt_a reason_n that_o he_o pay_v dear_a for_o yet_o the_o whole_a course_n of_o the_o life_n and_o action_n of_o a_o christian_a flow_n from_o spiritual_a reason_n o_o that_o the_o lord_n will_v give_v you_o to_o examine_v yourselves_o by_o this_o it_o be_v not_o by_o what_o thou_o accounte_v of_o or_o what_o thou_o esteem_v or_o love_v but_o what_o move_v thou_o what_o be_v the_o wheel_n that_o set_v thou_o on_o work_n be_v it_o a_o spiritual_a mind_n that_o give_v spiritual_a argument_n that_o move_v thou_o all_o the_o day_n to_o good_a towards_o god_n or_o man_n i_o desire_v that_o you_o will_v carry_v this_o with_o you_o this_o be_v rhe_n essential_a difference_n between_o a_o hypocrite_n and_o a_o christian_n ask_v when_o thou_o do_v a_o action_n not_o how_o much_o thou_o do_v or_o what_o man_n conceive_v of_o it_o though_o it_o be_v but_o a_o small_a action_n as_o suppose_v thou_o be_v a_o life_n as_o be_v carry_v upon_o spiritual_a reason_n so_o much_o godliness_n there_o be_v it_o be_v not_o how_o much_o thou_o fast_o or_o pray_v or_o the_o like_a but_o how_o much_o thou_o be_v carry_v by_o spiritual_a reason_n as_o in_o egypt_n they_o have_v a_o pillar_n and_o figure_n upon_o it_o and_o when_o nilus_n flow_v up_o they_o know_v by_o those_o figure_n how_o far_o the_o river_n rise_v high_a or_o low_o and_o according_o they_o set_v their_o rate_n on_o thing_n and_o according_o thing_n will_v be_v dear_a or_o cheap_a or_o as_o by_o your_o weather-glass_n you_o know_v whether_o it_o will_v be_v rain_n or_o fair_a weather_n so_o this_o rule_n will_v be_v a_o weatherglass_n a_o grace-glass_n and_o a_o flesh-glass_n that_o be_v if_o thou_o lay_v up_o this_o in_o thy_o soul_n hereby_o thou_o may_v know_v the_o ebbing_n and_o flow_n of_o thy_o soul_n whether_o thou_o walk_v better_o this_o week_n then_o before_o it_o may_v be_v lust_n may_v drive_v a_o man_n to_o a_o good_a thing_n but_o to_o go_v to_o spiritual_a rationallity_n that_o be_v the_o essence_n of_o a_o christian_a as_o the_o other_o rationallity_n be_v the_o essence_n of_o a_o man_n hereby_o thou_o may_v know_v whither_o thou_o be_v near_o to_o god_n this_o week_n than_o thou_o be_v the_o week_n before_o or_o whether_o thou_o be_v further_o from_o he_o use_v 2._o the_o other_o lesson_n and_o a_o special_a lesson_n for_o you_o to_o remember_v from_o what_o i_o have_v tell_v you_o concern_v spiritual_a reason_v be_v this_o hence_o learn_v why_o wise_a man_n so_o oft_o miss_v the_o will_n of_o god_n it_o be_v a_o bless_a lesson_n why_o do_v we_o see_v godly_a man_n many_o time_n miss_v the_o will_n of_o god_n and_o be_v quite_o out_o in_o matter_n of_o judgement_n and_o action_n and_o yet_o be_v holy_a and_o godly_a man_n it_o be_v not_o because_o they_o reason_v not_o right_o concern_v such_o thing_n but_o because_o the_o reason_n whereby_o they_o reason_v it_o be_v more_o carnal_a than_o spiritual_a as_o for_o instance_n i_o can_v name_v a_o book_n that_o be_v write_v about_o the_o common_a prayer_n not_o long_o ago_o a_o book_n of_o admirable_a reason_n full_a of_o rationality_n and_o by_o a_o godly_a man_n too_o and_o yet_o he_o miss_v the_o will_n of_o god_n in_o it_o how_o come_v it_o not_o because_o he_o do_v not_o reason_n right_o but_o because_o the_o reason_n he_o reason_v by_o be_v natural_a and_o not_o spiritual_a and_o so_o among_o minister_n they_o reason_v thing_n thorough_o and_o right_o and_o draw_v deduction_n from_o they_o but_o here_o they_o miss_v they_o look_v not_o what_o reason_n they_o reason_n by_o it_o may_v be_v it_o be_v natural_a reason_n and_o that_o may_v lead_v to_o natural_n but_o it_o can_v to_o spiritual_n this_o be_v a_o rare_a rule_n for_o christian_n when_o thou_o be_v reason_v and_o thy_o thought_n be_v busy_a about_o a_o case_n and_o thou_o deducte_v one_o thing_n from_o another_o but_o ask_v thyself_o i_o reason_n but_o what_o be_v this_o reason_n i_o reason_n by_o be_v it_o carnal_a or_o spiritual_a as_o man_n that_o weigh_v gold_n or_o other_o thing_n they_o first_o heave_v up_o the_o scale_n to_o see_v if_o they_o be_v right_a we_o do_v not_o do_v so_o and_o therefore_o we_o ordinary_o miss_v in_o this_o as_o when_o a_o man_n be_v in_o anger_n he_o think_v he_o never_o speak_v better_a reason_n than_o then_o he_o speak_v powerful_o and_o he_o think_v every_o word_n be_v gospel_n and_o every_o word_n be_v reason_n but_o it_o be_v corrupt_a reason_n and_o so_o it_o appear_v to_o he_o next_o day_n now_o any_o lust_n may_v transport_v a_o man_n so_o let_v a_o lust_n set_v natural_a reason_n on_o work_n and_o a_o man_n will_v reason_v brave_o and_o right_o but_o he_o do_v not_o
