but_o the_o truth_n be_v it_o be_v not_o the_o mind_n of_o poor_a labour_a man_n that_o be_v over-workt_a and_o tire_v on_o the_o week_n day_n but_o it_o be_v their_o body_n and_o therefore_o there_o be_v no_o recreation_n so_o suitable_a to_o they_o as_o the_o ease_n of_o the_o body_n and_o the_o holy_a and_o joyful_a exercise_n of_o the_o mind_n upon_o their_o creator_n their_o redeemer_n and_o their_o everlasting_a rest._n 4._o but_o if_o you_o will_v needs_o have_v day_n of_o temptation_n and_o sinful_a sport_n and_o pleasure_n for_o they_o let_v landlord_n abate_v their_o tenant_n as_o much_o rent_n as_o one_o day_n vacancy_n from_o labour_n in_o a_o month_n or_o a_o fortnight_n will_v amount_v to_o or_o let_v the_o common_a `_o saint_n day_n which_o of_o the_o two_o be_v more_o at_o man_n disposal_n be_v make_v their_o sport_v day_n and_o rob_v not_o their_o soul_n of_o that_o one_o weekly_a day_n which_o god_n have_v separate_v for_o his_o worship_n obj._n but_o there_o be_v student_n and_o lawyer_n and_o minister_n and_o gentleman_n who_o labour_n be_v most_o that_o of_o the_o brain_n and_o not_o the_o ploughman_n bodily_a toil_n and_o these_o have_v need_n of_o bodily_a recreation_n answ._n and_o there_o be_v few_o of_o these_o so_o poor_a but_o they_o can_v take_v their_o bodily_a recreation_n on_o the_o week_n day_n and_o many_o of_o they_o need_n as_o much_o the_o whole_a lord_n day_n for_o their_o soul_n edification_n as_o any_o other_o and_o no_o one_o that_o know_v himself_o will_v say_v that_o he_o need_v it_o not_o if_o any_o man_n need_v remission_n of_o study_n and_o bodily_a exercise_n it_o be_v minister_n themselves_o and_o be_v it_o themselves_o that_o they_o plead_v for_o sport_n and_o dance_a for_o will_v they_o be_v companion_n of_o the_o vain_a in_o such_o like_a vanity_n obj._n but_o the_o mind_n of_o man_n be_v not_o able_a to_o endure_v a_o constant_a intention_n and_o elevation_n of_o devotion_n all_o the_o day_n long_o without_o recreation_n and_o intermission_n and_o put_v man_n upon_o more_o than_o they_o can_v do_v will_v but_o hinder_v they_o when_o a_o little_a recreation_n will_v make_v they_o more_o fresh_a and_o fervent_a when_o they_o return_v to_o god_n answ._n o_o what_o a_o advantage_n be_v it_o to_o know_v by_o experience_n what_o one_o talk_v of_o and_o what_o a_o inconvenience_n to_o talk_v of_o holiness_n and_o heavenliness_n by_o hearsay_n only_o 1._o to_o poor_a people_n that_o have_v but_o one_o day_n in_o seven_o that_o one_o day_n shall_v not_o seem_v too_o long_o 2._o if_o it_o be_v from_o a_o carnal_a enemity_n to_o god_n and_o spiritual_a thing_n shortness_n and_o seldomeness_n will_v be_v no_o cure_n but_o they_o have_v need_v rather_o to_o be_v provoke_v to_o diligence_n till_o they_o be_v cure_v than_o to_o be_v indulge_v in_o that_o averseness_n and_o sloth_n which_o till_o its_o cure_v will_v prevail_v when_o you_o have_v do_v your_o best_a against_o it_o 3._o but_o if_o it_o be_v a_o weariness_n of_o the_o flesh_n as_o the_o disciple_n when_o they_o sleep_v while_o christ_n be_v pray_v or_o a_o weariness_n through_o such_o imperfection_n of_o grace_n and_o remnant_n of_o carnality_n which_o the_o sincere_a be_v liable_a to_o then_o give_v way_n to_o it_o will_v increase_v it_o and_o resist_v it_o be_v the_o way_n to_o overcome_v it_o 4._o how_o many_o necessary_a intermission_n be_v there_o which_o confute_v this_o pretence_n of_o weariness_n some_o time_n be_v take_v up_o in_o dress_v and_o some_o with_o poor_a servant_n in_o wait_v on_o their_o master_n and_o mistress_n and_o in_o prepare_v meat_n and_o drink_n some_o in_o go_v to_o church_n and_o come_v home_o some_o in_o eat_v usual_o more_o than_o once_o some_o in_o prepare_v again_o for_o sleep_n beside_o what_o cattle_n and_o by-occasion_n will_v require_v and_o be_v the_o remainder_n of_o one_o day_n in_o a_o week_n yet_o too_o much_o for_o the_o business_n which_o we_o be_v create_v preserve_v and_o redeem_a for_o and_o on_o which_o our_o endless_a life_n depend_v o_o that_o we_o know_v what_o the_o love_n of_o god_n be_v and_o what_o it_o be_v to_o regard_v our_o soul_n according_a to_o their_o worth_n will_v not_o a_o soul_n that_o love_v god_n rather_o say_v alas_o how_o short_a be_v the_o lord_n day_n how_o quick_o be_v it_o go_v how_o many_o interruption_n hinder_v my_o delight_n shall_v i_o think_v a_o week_n short_a enough_o for_o my_o worldly_a labour_n and_o one_o day_n thus_o parcel_v too_o long_o to_o seek_v the_o face_n of_o god_n i_o see_v blind_a worldling_n and_o sensualist_n can_v be_v long_o unwearied_a at_o market_n in_o their_o shop_n and_o field_n especial_o when_o their_o gain_n come_v in_o and_o at_o card_n and_o dice_n and_o bowl_v and_o idle_a prate_v etc._n etc._n and_o shall_v i_o be_v weary_a so_o soon_o of_o the_o most_o noble_a and_o necessary_a work_n and_o of_o the_o sweet_a pleasure_n upon_o earth_n a_o hypocrite_n that_o draw_v near_o to_o god_n but_o with_o the_o lip_n while_o his_o heart_n be_v far_o from_o he_o as_o he_o never_o true_o seek_v god_n so_o he_o never_o true_o find_v he_o and_o have_v none_o of_o the_o true_a spiritual_a delight_n of_o holiness_n nor_o ever_o feel_v the_o pleasure_n of_o exercise_v his_o love_n to_o god_n by_o the_o help_n of_o faith_n in_o the_o hope_n of_o heaven_n and_o therefore_o no_o wonder_n if_o he_o be_v weary_a of_o such_o unprofitable_a sapless_a and_o unpleasant_a work_n as_o his_o dead_a formality_n and_o affectation_n be_v but_o it_o be_v not_o so_o with_o the_o sincere_a experience_a christian_a who_o serve_v god_n in_o spirit_n and_o truth_n have_v true_a and_o spiritual_a recreation_n pleasure_n and_o benefit_n in_o and_o by_o his_o service_n and_o therefore_o we_o see_v that_o the_o holy_a experience_a believer_n be_v still_o averse_a to_o these_o sensual_a diversion_n and_o do_v not_o think_v the_o lord_n da_fw-mi or_o his_o service_n too_o long_o and_o o_o christian_n what_o happy_a advantage_n in_o such_o controversy_n have_v you_o in_o your_o holy_a sincerity_n and_o sweet_a experience_n 5._o but_o yet_o i_o be_o not_o such_o a_o stranger_n to_o man_n to_o myself_o or_o other_o as_o to_o deny_v that_o our_o naughty_a heart_n be_v incline_v to_o be_v weary_a of_o well_o do_v but_o mark_v what_o a_o cure_n god_n in_o wisdom_n and_o mercy_n have_v provide_v for_o we_o as_o it_o be_v but_o one_o day_n in_o seven_o which_o be_v thus_o to_o be_v whole_o employ_v with_o god_n and_o as_o much_o of_o this_o day_n be_v take_v up_o with_o the_o bodily_a necessary_n aforesaid_a so_o for_o the_o rest_n god_n appoint_v we_o variety_n of_o exercise_n that_o when_o we_o be_v weary_a of_o one_o another_o may_v be_v our_o recreation_n when_o we_o have_v hear_v we_o must_v pray_v and_o when_o we_o have_v pray_v we_o must_v hear_v again_o we_o must_v read_v we_o must_v sing_v and_o speak_v god_n praise_n we_o must_v celebrate_v the_o memorial_n of_o christ_n death_n in_o the_o sacrament_n we_o must_v meditate_v we_o must_v confer_v we_o must_v instruct_v our_o family_n and_o we_o have_v variety_n of_o subject_n for_o each_o
for_o a_o word_n or_o action_n about_o worldly_a thing_n that_o fall_v in_o on_o the_o by_o without_o any_o hindrance_n to_o his_o spiritual_a work_n and_o if_o another_o speak_v not_o a_o word_n of_o any_o common_a thing_n and_o yet_o do_v little_a in_o spiritual_a thing_n for_o his_o own_o or_o other_o edification_n i_o shall_v think_v he_o a_o great_a abuser_n or_o neglecter_n of_o the_o lord_n day_n a_o few_o word_n about_o a_o common_a thing_n that_o fall_v in_o the_o way_n may_v be_v speak_v without_o any_o hindrance_n of_o any_o holy_a duty_n but_o still_o we_o must_v see_v that_o it_o be_v not_o a_o scandalous_a temptation_n to_o other_o if_o i_o see_v a_o man_n that_o unexpected_o find_v some_o uncomely_a hole_n or_o rend_v in_o his_o clothes_n either_o pin_n it_o up_o or_o few_o it_o up_o before_o he_o go_v abroad_o i_o will_v not_o blame_v he_o but_o if_o he_o do_v it_o so_o as_o to_o embolden_v another_o who_o use_v needless_o to_o mend_v his_o clothes_n on_o the_o lord_n day_n it_o will_v be_v a_o sin_n of_o scandal_n if_o i_o see_v one_o cut_v some_o undecent_a straggle_a hair_n before_o he_o go_v forth_o i_o will_v not_o blame_v he_o but_o if_o he_o do_v it_o may_v judge_v of_o recreation_n on_o the_o lord_n day_n the_o recreation_n of_o the_o mind_n must_v be_v the_o various_a holy_a employment_n of_o the_o day_n no_o bodily_a recreation_n be_v lawful_a which_o needless_o waste_v time_n or_o hinder_v our_o duty_n or_o divert_v our_o mind_n from_o holy_a thing_n or_o be_v a_o snare_n to_o other_o unless_o it_o be_v some_o weak_a person_n who_o health_n require_v bodily_a motion_n few_o person_n need_v any_o other_o than_o holy_a recreation_n on_o that_o day_n i_o know_v no_o one_o man_n that_o so_o much_o need_v it_o as_o myself_o who_o these_o twenty_o year_n can_v digest_v one_o day_n meat_n unless_o i_o walk_v or_o run_v or_o exercise_v my_o body_n before_o it_o till_o i_o be_o hot_a or_o sweat_v and_o therefore_o necessity_n require_v i_o to_o walk_v or_o fast_o but_o i_o do_v it_o private_o on_o that_o day_n leave_v i_o tempt_v other_o to_o sin_n but_o i_o will_v not_o censure_v one_o who_o i_o see_v walk_v at_o fit_a hour_n when_o for_o aught_o i_o know_v he_o may_v be_v take_v up_o in_o some_o fruitful_a meditation_n but_o if_o person_n will_v walk_v in_o the_o street_n or_o field_n in_o idleness_n or_o for_o vain_a delight_n or_o discourse_n as_o if_o the_o day_n be_v too_o long_o for_o they_o and_o they_o have_v no_o business_n to_o do_v for_o their_o soul_n this_o be_v not_o only_o a_o sin_n but_o a_o very_a ill_a sign_n of_o one_o that_o be_v senseless_a of_o his_o soul_n necessity_n and_o his_o duty_n vii_o to_o read_v history_n philosophy_n or_o common_a thing_n unnecessary_o on_o the_o lord_n day_n be_v a_o sinful_a diversion_n from_o the_o more_o spiritual_a work_n of_o it_o and_o unsuitable_a to_o the_o appoint_a use_n of_o the_o day_n much_o more_o romance_n play_v book_n or_o idle_a story_n yea_o or_o those_o part_n of_o divinity_n itself_o which_o be_v less_o practical_a and_o useful_a to_o the_o raise_n of_o thankful_a and_o heavenly_a affection_n but_o yet_o sometime_o such_o other_o matter_n may_v fall_v in_o at_o a_o sermon_n or_o conference_n or_o in_o meditation_n which_o will_v require_v a_o present_a satisfaction_n in_o some_o point_n of_o history_n philosophy_n or_o controversal_a divinity_n which_o may_v be_v subservient_o use_v to_o edification_n without_o sin_n here_o therefore_o we_o must_v judge_v prudent_o viii_o a_o thing_n that_o may_v be_v lawful_a single_o in_o itself_o unless_o it_o be_v of_o great_a necessity_n be_v unlawful_a when_o he_o that_o serve_v we_o in_o it_o be_v draw_v or_o encourage_v to_o make_v a_o trade_n of_o it_o as_o to_o use_v a_o barber_n to_o cut_v your_o hair_n or_o a_o tailor_n to_o mend_v your_o clothes_n or_o a_o coblar_a to_o mend_v your_o shoe_n because_o if_o you_o may_v use_v he_o so_o may_v other_o as_o well_o as_o you_o and_o so_o he_o will_v follow_v his_o call_v on_o the_o lord_n day_n and_o yet_o i_o dare_v not_o say_v if_o when_o you_o be_v to_o travel_v to_o church_n you_o find_v your_o shoe_n or_o boot_n by_o break_v something_o to_o make_v you_o uncapable_a of_o go_v out_o but_o you_o may_v get_v they_o mend_v private_o where_o it_o may_v be_v do_v without_o this_o inconvenience_n and_o though_o cook_n and_o baker_n shall_v not_o be_v unnecessary_o use_v in_o their_o trade_n yet_o be_v it_o not_o always_o unlawful_a but_o sometime_o very_a well_o because_o as_o one_o servant_n in_o the_o kitchen_n may_v be_v use_v to_o dress_v meat_n for_o all_o the_o family_n so_o one_o baker_n or_o cook_n may_v serve_v many_o family_n and_o save_v ten_o time_n as_o many_o person_n the_o labour_n which_o else_o they_o must_v be_v at_o and_o perhaps_o with_o easy_a and_o quick_a dispatch_n than_o other_o the_o trade_n of_o the_o apothecary_n surgeon_n and_o physician_n be_v ordinary_o use_v but_o for_o necessity_n ix_o there_o be_v no_o sufficient_a avoidance_n of_o such_o abuse_n but_o by_o careful_a foresight_n and_o prevention_n and_o preparation_n the_o week_n before_o which_o therefore_o must_v be_v conscionable_o do_v chap._n xii_o of_o what_o importance_n the_o due_a observation_n of_o the_o lord_n day_n be_v these_o singular_a benefit_n of_o keep_v the_o lord_n day_n aright_o shall_v make_v all_o that_o love_n god_n or_o holiness_n or_o the_o church_n or_o their_o own_o or_o other_o man_n soul_n take_v heed_n how_o they_o grow_v into_o a_o neglect_n or_o abuse_v of_o it_o much_o more_o that_o they_o plead_v not_o for_o such_o negligence_n or_o abuse_n i._o the_o due_a observation_n of_o the_o lord_n day_n be_v needful_a to_o keep_v up_o the_o solemn_a worship_n of_o god_n and_o public_a own_n and_o honour_v he_o in_o the_o world_n if_o all_o man_n be_v leave_v to_o themselves_o what_o time_n they_o will_v bestow_v in_o the_o worship_v of_o god_n the_o great_a part_n will_v cast_v off_o all_o and_o grow_v into_o atheism_n or_o utter_a profaneness_n and_o the_o rest_n will_v grow_v into_o confusion_n and_o if_o all_o prince_n and_o ruler_n or_o church_n in_o the_o world_n be_v leave_v to_o their_o own_o will_n to_o appoint_v the_o people_n on_o what_o day_n to_o meet_v some_o kingdom_n and_o church_n will_v have_v one_o day_n in_o eight_o or_o nine_o or_o ten_o or_o twenty_o and_o some_o only_o now_o and_o then_o a_o hour_n and_o some_o one_o day_n and_o some_o another_o and_o some_o next_o to_o none_o at_o all_o for_o there_o be_v no_o one_o universal_a monareh_n on_o earth_n to_o make_v law_n for_o they_o all_o whatever_o the_o pope_n or_o his_o nominal-general_n council_n may_v pretend_v to_o and_o they_o will_v never_o all_o exceed_o ignorant_a of_o the_o thing_n of_o god_n and_o their_o salvation_n that_o all_o the_o constant_a diligence_n that_o can_v be_v use_v with_o they_o in_o preach_v exhort_v catechise_v etc._n etc._n will_v not_o overcome_v it_o with_o the_o most_o the_o most_o diligent_a master_n of_o family_n lament_v it_o how_o ignorant_a their_o family_n be_v when_o they_o have_v do_v the_o best_a they_o can_v let_v those_o that_o plead_v for_o dance_v and_o sport_v away_o much_o of_o the_o day_n but_o do_v like_o man_n that_o do_v not_o secret_o scorn_v christianity_n nor_o despise_v their_o servant_n soul_n and_o let_v they_o but_o try_v what_o measure_n of_o knowledge_n the_o bare_a hear_n of_o common_a prayer_n yea_o and_o a_o sermon_n or_o two_o with_o it_o will_v beget_v in_o their_o make_v fit_a to_o live_v like_o christian_n it_o be_v like_a to_o be_v by_o the_o holy_a improvement_n of_o this_o day_n in_o the_o diligent_a teach_n and_o learn_v the_o substance_n of_o religion_n and_o in_o the_o sacred_a exercise_n thereof_o iv._o the_o great_a carnality_n wordliness_n and_o carelessness_n of_o the_o most_o and_o their_o great_a averseness_n to_o the_o thing_n of_o god_n do_v will_v if_o ever_o be_v reconcile_v to_o it_o six_o day_n in_o a_o week_n be_v a_o sufficient_a diversion_n apprentice_n and_o pupil_n and_o schoolboy_n will_v hold_v on_o in_o learning_n though_o they_o be_v averse_a and_o you_o think_v not_o all_o the_o six_o day_n too_o much_o to_o hold_v they_o to_o it_o a_o schoolboy_n must_v learn_v daily_o eight_o or_o nine_o hour_n in_o a_o day_n and_o yet_o some_o wretched_a man_n yea_o teacher_n will_v persuade_v poor_a soul_n that_o must_v learn_v how_o to_o be_v save_v or_o perish_v for_o ever_o that_o less_o than_o eight_o hour_n one_o day_n in_o seven_o be_v too_o much_o to_o be_v spend_v in_o the_o needfull_a excellent_a and_o pleasant_a matter_n in_o all_o the_o world_n if_o you_o say_v that_o the_o sublimity_n or_o difficulty_n make_v it_o wearisome_a i_o answer_v that_o philosopher_n do_v much_o long_o hold_v on_o in_o hard_a speculation_n if_o you_o say_v divinity_n be_v unsuitable_a to_o carnal_a mind_n their_o sick_a stomach_n must_v take_v no_o more_o than_o they_o can_v digest_v i_o answer_v 1._o can_v a_o carnal_a preacher_n for_o his_o gain_n and_o honour_n and_o fancy_n hold_v on_o all_o the_o year_n in_o the_o study_n
