in_o a_o vain_a opinion_n of_o our_o acquaintance_n with_o god_n and_o our_o bless_a saviour_n and_o the_o mystery_n of_o the_o gospel_n which_o have_v little_a or_o no_o effect_n upon_o our_o heart_n of_o a_o unedifying_a whereby_o we_o have_v gain_v this_o great_a point_n that_o they_o have_v no_o colour_n to_o pretend_v the_o person_n who_o preach_v be_v unsanctified_a and_o therefore_o god_n in_o our_o church_n so_o full_o solid_o and_o judicious_o handle_v that_o man_n need_v go_v no_o whether_o else_o for_o edification_n if_o that_o be_v the_o thing_n they_o true_o desire_v and_o sincere_o seek_v and_o endeavour_v for_o what_o truth_n can_v they_o learn_v any_o where_o else_o which_o be_v not_o to_o be_v learn_v if_o they_o will_v attend_v upon_o god_n service_n there_o in_o our_o church_n what_o motive_n to_o believe_v or_o what_o argument_n to_o convince_v man_n of_o their_o duty_n which_o be_v not_o there_o represent_v and_o press_v what_o vice_n be_v there_o which_o do_v not_o there_o receive_v just_a correction_n what_o virtue_n that_o be_v not_o there_o most_o strong_o recommend_v which_o of_o the_o promise_n be_v not_o there_o apply_v to_o the_o heart_n of_o the_o faithful_a and_o where_o can_v man_n have_v better_a mean_n of_o know_v the_o terror_n of_o the_o lord_n as_o the_o apostle_n speak_v against_o all_o the_o impenitent_a and_o disobedient_a and_o if_o man_n can_v profit_v where_o such_o thing_n as_o these_o be_v constant_o manage_v to_o as_o much_o advantage_n as_o the_o skill_n of_o the_o preacher_n will_v enable_v he_o i_o be_o sure_a the_o fault_n must_v lie_v somewhere_o else_o than_o in_o the_o matter_n of_o the_o sermon_n ii_o yes_o will_v some_o say_v we_o allow_v the_o matter_n of_o they_o to_o be_v good_a enough_o but_o the_o manner_n of_o they_o be_v such_o that_o we_o can_v reap_v the_o like_a benefit_n by_o they_o that_o we_o do_v by_o other_o man_n preach_v who_o can_v conform_v to_o the_o church_n of_o england_n which_o if_o it_o be_v a_o just_a exception_n the_o fault_n must_v lie_v either_o in_o the_o composition_n of_o they_o or_o in_o their_o delivery_n after_o they_o be_v compose_v 1._o now_o if_o the_o composition_n of_o they_o be_v faulty_a it_o be_v because_o their_o method_n be_v not_o clear_a and_o perspicuous_a or_o the_o language_n not_o plain_a enough_o to_o convey_v the_o sense_n of_o they_o to_o the_o mind_n of_o the_o hearer_n neither_o of_o which_o i_o be_o confident_a can_v be_v true_o charge_v upon_o they_o for_o never_o do_v man_n more_o endeavour_n orderly_a discourse_n and_o aim_v at_o plain_a unaffected_a speech_n than_o they_o do_v now_o in_o the_o church_n of_o england_n where_o good_a sense_n in_o the_o most_o easy_a and_o familiar_a word_n be_v now_o look_v upon_o as_o the_o principal_a commendation_n of_o sermon_n some_o indeed_o i_o have_v hear_v find_v fault_n with_o our_o sermon_n for_o not_o keep_v the_o old_a method_n as_o they_o call_v it_o of_o doctrine_n reason_n and_o use_v which_o be_v altogether_o unjust_a as_o well_o as_o frivolous_a for_o there_o be_v no_o man_n that_o balk_v that_o method_n when_o it_o be_v natural_a but_o rather_o choose_v it_o because_o it_o have_v be_v common_a and_o be_v easy_a and_o useful_a as_o for_o example_n if_o any_o man_n among_o we_o be_v to_o preach_v upon_o this_o text_n corinth_n xiii_o 13._o and_o now_o abide_v faith_n hope_n and_o charity_n these_o three_o but_o the_o great_a of_o these_o be_v charity_n he_o will_v without_o doubt_n not_o only_o observe_v among_o other_o doctrine_n the_o pre-eminence_n of_o charity_n but_o also_o give_v the_o best_a reason_n he_o can_v think_v of_o why_o it_o ought_v to_o be_v high_a in_o our_o esteem_n and_o our_o affection_n too_o because_o it_o be_v the_o very_a end_n of_o faith_n and_o hope_n and_o because_o it_o make_v we_o like_a unto_o god_n which_o faith_n and_o hope_n do_v not_o and_o after_o such_o like_a thing_n he_o will_v possess_v with_o it_o not_o content_v themselves_o mere_o with_o believe_v but_o be_v so_o affect_v with_o it_o that_o they_o attain_v the_o end_n of_o their_o faith_n which_o ought_v to_o work_v by_o for_o the_o former_a of_o these_o it_o be_v not_o true_a where_o the_o matter_n in_o hand_n be_v of_o great_a concernment_n and_o require_v more_o than_o ordinary_a earnestness_n which_o ought_v in_o reason_n to_o be_v reserve_v for_o some_o certain_a occasion_n and_o not_o be_v spend_v upon_o all_o thing_n alike_o for_o than_o it_o lose_v its_o effect_n at_o that_o time_n when_o it_o will_v be_v most_o seasonable_o and_o useful_o employ_v but_o there_o be_v a_o great_a mistake_n in_o that_o which_o man_n call_v vehemence_n which_o ofttimes_o consist_v only_o in_o the_o strength_n of_o the_o voice_n which_o neither_o all_o your_o preacher_n nor_o all_o we_o be_v endow_v withal_o and_o if_o they_o be_v will_v be_v but_o noise_n without_o good_a sense_n which_o will_v move_v attentive_a mind_n as_o much_o as_o a_o loud_a sound_n affect_v man_n ear_n add_v to_o this_o
that_o there_o be_v a_o natural_a heat_n also_o in_o some_o man_n temper_n which_o make_v they_o speak_v vehement_o with_o such_o a_o warmth_n as_o have_v the_o appearance_n of_o much_o zeal_n when_o they_o be_v nothing_o near_o so_o deep_o affect_v with_o what_o they_o say_v as_o some_o man_n of_o more_o sedate_n and_o cool_v temper_n be_v who_o judgement_n operate_v more_o strong_o than_o their_o passion_n and_o these_o man_n sure_o may_v be_v very_o serviceable_a for_o illumination_n of_o the_o mind_n with_o such_o force_n of_o argument_n as_o will_v certain_o move_v the_o affection_n vehement_o by_o the_o help_n of_o serious_a consideration_n without_o which_o if_o any_o affection_n be_v raise_v they_o be_v little_a worth_n and_o will_v not_o last_v but_o vanish_v as_o soon_o as_o that_o blast_n be_v over_o which_o stir_v they_o up_o and_o this_o difference_n of_o temper_n be_v observable_a in_o your_o man_n as_o well_o as_o in_o we_o and_o therefore_o this_o can_v be_v no_o hindrance_n to_o edification_n among_o we_o no_o more_o than_o among_o you_o as_o for_o read_v of_o sermon_n it_o be_v not_o universal_o use_v but_o there_o be_v those_o among_o we_o who_o god_n have_v bless_v with_o such_o strength_n of_o memory_n or_o readiness_n of_o conception_n that_o they_o need_v not_o the_o help_n of_o any_o note_n at_o all_o in_o the_o pulpit_n and_o other_o do_v you_o be_v not_o able_a to_o say_v that_o all_o you_o move_v you_o so_o as_o some_o do_v and_o yet_o you_o make_v such_o account_n of_o all_o that_o it_o have_v ever_o be_v look_v upon_o as_o a_o very_a disorderly_a thing_n among_o yourselves_o and_o worse_o than_o that_o i_o shall_v prove_v by_o and_o by_o for_o people_n to_o run_v from_o their_o own_o minister_n to_o hear_v some_o other_o though_o of_o the_o same_o way_n mere_o to_o have_v the_o affection_n more_o move_v because_o 2._o this_o alone_a be_v so_o far_o from_o profit_v by_o sermon_n that_o it_o be_v very_o great_a unprofitableness_n to_o be_v move_v by_o a_o sermon_n and_o do_v nothing_o thereupon_o but_o only_o commend_v it_o that_o be_v to_o be_v tickle_v and_o please_v a_o while_n but_o not_o alter_v nor_o sermon_n and_o it_o be_v well_o if_o the_o affection_n which_o some_o people_n speak_v of_o be_v not_o motion_n which_o they_o feel_v mere_o from_o the_o tone_n of_o the_o voice_n as_o from_o a_o take_a phrase_n a_o similitude_n or_o some_o such_o trifle_n be_v nothing_o comparable_a to_o those_o which_o we_o raise_v by_o god_n blessing_n upon_o our_o own_o serious_a consideration_n when_o a_o heap_n of_o teacher_n and_o some_o also_o prefer_v other_o before_o their_o own_o pastor_n only_o because_o they_o show_v more_o zeal_n mark_v this_o in_o their_o voice_n and_o gesture_n and_o phrase_n of_o speech_n and_o manner_n of_o delivery_n though_o happy_o the_o doctrine_n itself_o be_v nothing_o so_o wholesome_a or_o powerful_a or_o fit_a to_o edify_v their_o conscience_n as_o the_o doctrine_n of_o their_o own_o pastor_n be_v and_o though_o these_o be_v the_o best_a of_o the_o three_o sort_n now_o mention_v and_o pretend_v much_o love_n and_o zeal_n yet_o we_o may_v wish_v they_o more_o knowledge_n and_o judgement_n i_o omit_v other_o thing_n upon_o this_o subject_a which_o you_o may_v find_v in_o his_o lviiith_z lecture_n upon_o the_o ivth_z of_o st._n john_n where_o he_o with_o his_o illustration_n of_o it_o by_o this_o example_n the_o excellent_a gift_n god_n have_v bestow_v on_o other_o in_o this_o case_n may_v be_v fit_o resemble_v unto_o physic_n which_o they_o use_v well_o who_o appetite_n be_v thereby_o amend_v and_o be_v make_v able_a to_o relish_v and_o like_v their_o ordinary_a food_n the_o better_a if_o after_o man_n have_v hear_v one_o of_o excellent_a gift_n they_o begin_v to_o distaste_v the_o ministry_n of_o their_o ordinary_a pastor_n and_o can_v like_v of_o none_o profit_n by_o none_o unless_o they_o have_v rare_a gift_n they_o learn_v not_o by_o hear_v he_o to_o profit_v by_o any_o one_o that_o deliver_v to_o they_o the_o wholesome_a word_n of_o our_o lord_n jesus_n and_o the_o doctrine_n that_o be_v according_a unto_o godliness_n though_o in_o the_o plain_a manner_n imaginable_a both_o for_o method_n and_o language_n this_o i_o have_v choose_v to_o write_v in_o his_o word_n because_o there_o be_v some_o i_o fear_v only_a as_o be_v of_o their_o own_o mind_n in_o every_o thing_n with_o the_o dislike_n of_o all_o other_o that_o be_v of_o a_o contrary_a persuasion_n and_o second_o from_o the_o respect_n they_o have_v to_o the_o difference_n of_o gift_n which_o be_v among_o preacher_n of_o which_o i_o speak_v before_o which_o move_v they_o to_o admire_v some_o who_o they_o judge_v to_o be_v of_o excellent_a gift_n though_o alas_o their_o judgement_n be_v very_o small_a but_o to_o despise_v and_o contemn_v all_o other_o and_o he_o have_v there_o these_o two_o remarkable_a reflection_n upon_o this_o humour_n which_o i_o beg_v of_o you_o to_o observe_v and_o remember_v first_o that_o this_o faction_n disposition_n of_o the_o hearer_n of_o god_n word_n have_v in_o all_o age_n be_v the_o cause_n of_o much_o confusion_n in_o the_o church_n of_o god_n and_o great_o hinder_v the_o fruit_n of_o the_o gospel_n of_o christ_n note_v here_o this_o way_n which_o you_o be_v in_o be_v not_o the_o mean_n supper_n nay_o by_o be_v present_a at_o the_o administration_n of_o baptism_n all_o may_v receive_v profit_n be_v put_v in_o mind_n thereby_o of_o the_o covenant_n god_n make_v with_o they_o in_o baptism_n etc._n etc._n last_o by_o the_o blessing_n pronounce_v by_o god_n minister_n all_o may_v receive_v good_a and_o therefore_o none_o ought_v to_o absent_v himself_o from_o any_o part_n of_o the_o public_a service_n of_o god_n for_o which_o his_o second_o reason_n be_v very_o remarkable_a that_o though_o we_o can_v receive_v no_o profit_n by_o the_o exercise_n use_v in_o our_o assembly_n judge_v of_o such_o a_o sermon_n how_o will_v it_o be_v accept_v by_o you_o will_v be_v apt_a to_o look_v upon_o it_o as_o altogether_o unprofitable_a or_o at_o least_o as_o a_o needless_a discourse_n which_o may_v as_o well_o nay_o better_o be_v spare_v than_o preach_v to_o the_o people_n if_o this_o be_v your_o mind_n then_o consider_v with_o yourselves_o why_o such_o thing_n out_o of_o one_o man_n mouth_n shall_v relish_v well_o enough_o or_o go_v down_o without_o disgust_n which_o come_v out_o of_o another_o you_o present_o dislike_v be_v it_o not_o manifest_a that_o you_o be_v partial_a and_o disaffect_v and_o that_o this_o be_v the_o reason_n you_o can_v profit_v by_o our_o sermon_n or_o if_o you_o can_v not_o like_o such_o discourse_n either_o from_o nonconformist_n or_o from_o our_o minister_n then_o consider_v whether_o you_o have_v not_o reason_n to_o think_v you_o be_v very_o much_o mistake_v in_o this_o business_n of_o profitable_a sermon_n when_o you_o imagine_v such_o discourse_n as_o these_o to_o be_v unprofitable_a and_o superfluous_a which_o in_o the_o judgement_n of_o sober_a man_n of_o all_o side_n be_v not_o only_o very_o useful_a but_o so_o necessary_a to_o be_v teach_v the_o people_n that_o for_o want_v of_o a_o sense_n of_o such_o thing_n they_o be_v in_o danger_n to_o lose_v their_o religion_n for_o as_o that_o good_a man_n say_v long_o ago_o and_o i_o doubt_v we_o be_v much_o improve_v in_o such_o impiety_n since_o that_o time_n as_o supersitition_n make_v the_o papist_n too_o careful_a and_o too_o bountiful_a so_o profaneness_n and_o atheism_n have_v make_v we_o too_o void_a of_o all_o care_n in_o beantify_v the_o house_n of_o god_n 2._o but_o if_o you_o think_v that_o you_o shall_v count_v such_o a_o sermon_n profitable_a than_o i_o desire_v you_o second_o to_o examine_v yourselves_o and_o consider_v whether_o you_o have_v learn_v so_o much_o out_o of_o the_o holy_a scripture_n as_o to_o observe_v all_o the_o forego_n rule_v due_o and_o careful_o or_o so_o much_o as_o to_o make_v they_o your_o study_n and_o to_o think_v how_o to_o bring_v your_o heart_n into_o conformity_n with_o they_o do_v you_o for_o instance_n reverence_n god_n sanctuary_n and_o when_o you_o come_v into_o it_o and_o while_o you_o be_v there_o give_v open_a signisication_n of_o it_o do_v you_o come_v at_o the_o begin_n of_o divine_a service_n or_o only_o to_o some_o part_n of_o it_o at_o the_o latter_a end_n or_o the_o sermon_n only_o do_v you_o stand_v up_o and_o do_v you_o kneel_v when_o the_o rest_n of_o the_o congregation_n do_v etc._n etc._n if_o you_o can_v say_v that_o you_o be_v so_o well_o acquaint_v with_o these_o and_o the_o rest_n of_o the_o forego_n rule_n as_o to_o endeavour_v to_o live_v by_o they_o then_o in_o reason_n you_o ought_v to_o conclude_v that_o the_o fault_n be_v some_o where_o else_o and_o not_o in_o our_o sermon_n if_o you_o can_v profit_v by_o they_o for_o you_o do_v not_o profit_v by_o the_o holy_a scripture_n themselves_o where_o these_o thing_n be_v so_o plain_o teach_v that_o a_o man_n ought_v to_o think_v very_o mean_o of_o himself_o and_o to_o look_v upon_o himself_o as_o a_o
