they_o receive_v will_v help_v to_o make_v we_o joyful_a in_o god_n praise_n because_o we_o be_v oblige_v by_o our_o union_n to_o reckon_v their_o sin_n their_o want_n and_o their_o mercy_n our_o own_o thus_o the_o general_a knowledge_n that_o multitude_n of_o christian_n as_o well_o as_o ourselves_o be_v concern_v in_o the_o matter_n of_o our_o prayer_n and_o the_o sense_n we_o have_v in_o particular_a of_o the_o concern_v of_o many_o of_o those_o we_o present_o join_v with_o will_v add_v much_o more_o to_o our_o devotion_n it_o may_v be_v there_o be_v many_o thing_n in_o the_o public_a prayer_n that_o we_o have_v not_o at_o present_a such_o a_o particular_a concernment_n in_o but_o when_o we_o think_v there_o be_v million_o of_o christian_n that_o have_v who_o be_v all_o of_o the_o same_o divine_a incorporation_n and_o that_o many_o of_o they_o be_v our_o own_o countryman_n unite_v with_o we_o as_o a_o national_a church_n and_o some_o our_o neighbour_n with_o who_o we_o be_v one_o as_o a_o parochial_a church_n and_o of_o who_o concern_v we_o may_v have_v a_o particular_a knowledge_n i_o say_v this_o meditation_n will_v great_o assist_v our_o devotion_n and_o will_v also_o increase_v that_o charity_n without_o which_o our_o prayer_n as_o well_o as_o ourselves_o be_v count_v but_o dead_a in_o the_o fight_n of_o god_n and_o when_o we_o have_v wrought_v ourselves_o to_o this_o excellent_a temper_n our_o love_n to_o our_o brethren_n will_v help_v our_o devotion_n another_o way_n also_o for_o it_o will_v make_v we_o endeavour_v by_o our_o example_n to_o make_v they_o devout_a and_o the_o more_o defefective_a we_o do_v perceive_v their_o devotion_n to_o be_v the_o more_o shall_v we_o endeavour_v to_o assist_v it_o by_o the_o perfection_n of_o our_o own_o and_o there_o be_v certain_o no_o better_o way_n for_o i_o have_v know_v those_o that_o reproof_n and_o disputation_n do_v but_o irritate_fw-la by_o such_o example_n to_o have_v be_v reform_v last_o frequent_a reading_n these_o holy_a office_n by_o ourselves_o and_o serious_a meditation_n thereon_o will_v be_v a_o great_a help_n to_o our_o devotion_n and_o dr._n comber_n be_v excellent_a book_n on_o the_o several_a office_n of_o the_o common_a prayer_n will_v much_o 〈◊〉_d we_o therein_o for_o when_o we_o have_v a_o full_a understanding_n of_o the_o great_a thing_n contain_v in_o the_o brief_a comprehensive_a sentence_n of_o the_o lord_n prayer_n and_o of_o our_o collect_v etc._n etc._n the_o memory_n thereof_o when_o we_o come_v to_o repeat_v they_o will_v much_o assist_v our_o devotion_n and_o i_o be_o persuade_v that_o if_o man_n be_v but_o conversant_a in_o the_o study_n of_o the_o common_a prayer-book_n they_o will_v find_v more_o instruction_n in_o the_o matter_n of_o their_o duty_n to_o god_n and_o man_n more_o assistance_n in_o govern_v their_o affection_n and_o passion_n and_o preserve_a peace_n in_o themselves_o more_o support_n and_o consolation_n in_o trouble_n and_o affliction_n and_o more_o aid_n against_o temptation_n etc._n etc._n than_o in_o read_v many_o book_n but_o especial_o it_o will_v be_v a_o excellent_a mean_n to_o increase_v those_o holy_a affection_n which_o prepare_v we_o for_o public_a prayer_n and_o to_o assist_v our_o devotion_n in_o the_o performance_n i_o have_v mention_v this_o little_a of_o a_o great_a deal_n that_o may_v be_v say_v of_o the_o matter_n of_o our_o meditation_n but_o still_o it_o must_v be_v remember_v that_o these_o thing_n be_v think_v on_o with_o a_o purpose_n and_o intention_n to_o beget_v in_o we_o such_o habitual_a affection_n and_o disposition_n that_o we_o may_v be_v always_o fit_a to_o pray_v and_o may_v in_o the_o most_o wont_a expression_n exercise_v a_o servant_n devotion_n and_o if_o we_o do_v so_o we_o shall_v not_o so_o need_v the_o natural_a or_o artificial_a rhetoric_n in_o prayer_n as_o those_o do_v that_o want_v these_o disposition_n nor_o shall_v we_o be_v cloy_v with_o have_v prayer_n always_o the_o same_o as_o some_o dainty_a stomach_n be_v with_o eat_v often_o the_o same_o meat_n for_o such_o man_n constant_o carry_v in_o their_o breast_n such_o a_o sense_n of_o their_o past_a enormity_n that_o it_o put_v life_n into_o their_o repeat_v our_o general_n confession_n and_o such_o esteem_n of_o god_n mercy_n in_o christ_n as_o give_v they_o a_o behaviour_n not_o ordinary_a in_o receive_v absolution_n they_o have_v such_o affection_n towards_o the_o glory_n and_o pleasure_n of_o almighty_n god_n and_o such_o belief_n that_o he_o only_o can_v give_v every_o man_n of_o any_o sense_n can_v discern_v the_o indecency_n of_o read_v such_o word_n as_o lord_n have_v mercy_n upon_o we_o christ_n have_v mercy_n upon_o we_o lord_n have_v mercy_n upon_o we_o with_o such_o a_o manner_n of_o speak_v as_o signify_v but_o little_a devotion_n and_o fervency_n of_o mind_n and_o so_o they_o may_v also_o of_o say_v the_o gloria_fw-la patri_fw-la and_o te_fw-la deum_fw-la &c_n &c_n without_o such_o cheerfulness_n of_o speech_n and_o reverend_a act_n of_o adoration_n as_o become_v the_o same_o neither_o can_v we_o think_v that_o we_o honour_n god_n of_o this_o service_n but_o beside_o he_o that_o be_v careless_a in_o make_v such_o expression_n of_o devotion_n in_o read_v the_o prayer_n do_v very_o much_o to_o prevent_v the_o conversion_n of_o a_o god_n or_o a_o fantastic_a observation_n of_o person_n or_o thing_n there_o present_a whether_o he_o mean_v a_o natural_a delight_n in_o exercise_v his_o gift_n and_o natural_a power_n and_o in_o attend_v to_o the_o music_n of_o word_n voice_n or_o instrument_n for_o there_o be_v no_o great_a difference_n if_o no_o more_o be_v mean_v or_o a_o spiritual_a employment_n of_o his_o mind_n upon_o god_n and_o the_o thing_n of_o religion_n as_o his_o chief_a joy_n and_o this_o kind_n of_o language_n for_o so_o 〈◊〉_d here_o call_v it_o as_o it_o be_v understand_v most_o general_o so_o it_o work_v most_o powerful_o on_o the_o mind_n of_o man_n and_o dispose_v they_o to_o believe_v what_o it_o express_v more_o than_o any_o rhetoric_n of_o word_n can_v do_v and_o though_o these_o expression_n as_o well_o as_o that_o of_o word_n require_v some_o caution_n for_o the_o right_a understanding_n they_o and_o may_v be_v abuse_v by_o hypocrite_n to_o cheat_v and_o deceive_v the_o world_n yet_o since_o according_a to_o man_n understanding_n of_o they_o and_o till_o they_o be_v convince_v of_o the_o hypocrifie_n they_o do_v incline_v and_o affect_v their_o mind_n man_n be_v to_o account_v themselves_o concern_v to_o make_v such_o expression_n for_o their_o conviction_n and_o edification_n and_o that_o the_o rather_o because_o else_o the_o soul_n of_o man_n will_v be_v betray_v to_o those_o that_o lie_v in_o wait_n to_o deceive_v by_o such_o false_a appearance_n and_o it_o be_v not_o a_o thing_n arbitrary_a and_o at_o man_n liberty_n whether_o they_o will_v use_v these_o expression_n or_o not_o for_o since_o they_o be_v so_o significant_a of_o our_o adoration_n of_o god_n or_o fervency_n in_o our_o prayer_n to_o he_o and_o exultancy_n in_o his_o praise_n we_o must_v be_v oblige_v thereunto_o by_o virtue_n of_o the_o command_v of_o worship_v god_n of_o so_o pray_v and_o praise_v as_o be_v worthy_a of_o he_o beside_o the_o many_o example_n of_o this_o in_o scripture_n and_o indeed_o the_o mind_n of_o man_n be_v so_o apt_a to_o be_v incline_v by_o these_o that_o they_o will_v scarce_o believe_v we_o true_o mean_v the_o worship_n of_o god_n except_o we_o express_v it_o by_o such_o sign_n now_o to_o apply_v this_o to_o the_o present_a purpose_n all_o nation_n according_a to_o that_o knowledge_n which_o natural_o they_o have_v of_o this_o have_v institute_v and_o practise_v such_o expression_n of_o their_o honour_n and_o respect_n unto_o the_o god_n they_o worship_v and_o the_o more_o the_o papist_n have_v decline_v from_o the_o substance_n of_o true_a piety_n the_o more_o they_o have_v endeavour_v to_o keep_v up_o the_o reputation_n of_o it_o by_o outward_a sign_n of_o devotion_n and_o a_o sect_n as_o they_o have_v former_o so_o do_v the_o still_o make_v the_o appearance_n of_o extraordinary_a devotion_n as_o mean_n to_o introduce_v the_o error_n and_o schism_n now_o take_v this_o for_o grant_v that_o it_o be_v part_n of_o the_o law_n write_v in_o the_o heart_n of_o all_o man_n that_o what_o ever_o be_v acknowledge_v to_o be_v god_n be_v to_o bâ—_n worship_v and_o adore_v and_o that_o as_o thâ—_n name_v of_o god_n be_v seriousness_n in_o extemporary_a prayer_n and_o these_o latter_a in_o who_o we_o be_v most_o concern_v be_v necessitate_v to_o some_o kind_n of_o seriousness_n and_o intention_n as_o that_o without_o which_o no_o man_n can_v pray_v in_o that_o way_n with_o any_o tolerable_a sense_n and_o method_n and_o many_o who_o with_o great_a intention_n and_o seriousness_n can_v scarce_o do_v either_o be_v the_o more_o oblige_v to_o a_o great_a fervency_n at_o least_o in_o show_n in_o call_v on_o the_o name_n of_o god_n with_o seem_a earnestness_n and_o to_o use_v his_o title_n and_o attribute_n over_o and_o over_o and_o all_o to_o cover_v the_o defect_n of_o their_o invention_n but_o this_o however_o look_v like_o the_o expression_n of_o a_o great_a devotion_n and_o be_v so_o understand_v by_o the_o unwary_a multitude_n if_o therefore_o they_o perceive_v no_o expression_n in_o our_o way_n that_o bear_v proportion_n to_o the_o same_o it_o be_v impossible_a but_o they_o will_v prefer_v
any_o posture_n that_o be_v less_o reverend_a to_o sit_v be_v very_o offensive_a to_o all_o that_o desire_v to_o see_v this_o service_n due_o perform_v and_o it_o be_v reason_n it_o shall_v be_v so_o for_o these_o word_n signify_v a_o most_o immediate_a address_n to_o god_n the_o ever_o bless_a trinity_n in_o unity_n in_o the_o high_a act_n of_o christian_a worship_n and_o so_o fit_o do_v they_o serve_v to_o the_o adoration_n of_o the_o deity_n according_a to_o the_o faith_n of_o our_o religion_n that_o the_o man_n that_o do_v not_o express_v the_o inward_a reverence_n and_o adoration_n of_o he_o may_v mind_v we_o that_o it_o be_v not_o the_o ordinary_a read_v those_o part_n of_o scripture_n for_o instruction_n but_o the_o repeat_v they_o as_o a_o office_n of_o praise_n and_o solemn_a they_o will_v have_v in_o find_v all_o that_o be_v good_a and_o profitable_a all_o that_o be_v decent_a and_o solemn_a all_o that_o be_v true_o primitive_a or_o any_o way_n praiseworthy_a in_o the_o service_n of_o the_o church_n of_o rome_n a_o church_n which_o be_v once_o very_o famous_a for_o learning_n piety_n and_o steadfastness_n in_o the_o faith_n still_o retain_v in_o we_o and_o all_o that_o which_o ignorance_n error_n or_o the_o corruption_n of_o time_n have_v introduce_v into_o that_o purge_v out_o in_o this_o i_o say_v the_o satisfaction_n they_o will_v find_v in_o consider_v consult_v the_o minister_n of_o our_o church_n they_o will_v find_v the_o full_a satisfaction_n that_o they_o can_v desire_v again_o as_o these_o consideration_n so_o the_o good_a effect_n of_o a_o devout_a attend_v this_o service_n will_v persuade_v they_o to_o continue_v the_o same_o the_o exaltation_n of_o our_o mind_n thereby_o above_o the_o mean_a concern_v of_o this_o world_n so_o that_o they_o shall_v not_o be_v influence_v by_o the_o revolution_n and_o infinite_a change_n to_o which_o it_o be_v subject_a the_o confirmation_n of_o our_o faith_n and_o hope_n in_o god_n promise_n and_o the_o inward_a joy_n and_o peace_n that_o result_v therefrom_o the_o excitation_n of_o our_o love_n to_o god_n and_o the_o exercise_v thereof_o in_o holy_a adoration_n and_o cheerful_a praise_n the_o increase_n of_o our_o love_n to_o one_o another_o by_o holy_a communion_n in_o such_o sacred_a office_n these_o and_o such_o like_a which_o will_v be_v the_o effect_n of_o attend_v this_o service_n will_v enforce_v our_o delight_n therein_o and_o our_o endeavour_n so_o to_o order_v it_o that_o we_o be_v not_o keep_v from_o the_o same_o to_o which_o i_o may_v add_v some_o outward_a good_a effect_n such_o as_o 1._o the_o prevent_v many_o idle_a and_o sometime_o very_o chargeable_a club_n and_o visit_n from_o which_o this_o will_n both_o excuse_v and_o oblige_v we_o 2._o the_o induce_v harmony_n and_o good_a order_n into_o our_o family_n for_o our_o contrive_n that_o as_o many_o as_o possible_a may_v attend_v god_n service_n will_v make_v much_o for_o order_n in_o other_o thing_n and_o also_o for_o love_n and_o peace_n and_o good_a success_n of_o our_o affair_n i_o can_v attend_v the_o demonstration_n but_o i_o be_o sure_a he_o that_o will_v try_v shall_v find_v it_o true_a by_o experience_n 3._o the_o cheerfulness_n induce_v into_o our_o mind_n by_o our_o communion_n in_o the_o psalmody_n and_o response_n and_o the_o use_n of_o our_o voice_n in_o other_o part_n of_o the_o service_n tend_v much_o to_o the_o health_n of_o our_o body_n and_o the_o mend_v our_o temper_n for_o as_o silence_n feed_v the_o melancholy_a humour_n the_o worst_a that_o man_n body_n be_v affect_v with_o and_o of_o most_o pernicious_a influence_n on_o the_o mind_n so_o speak_v and_o especial_o in_o such_o heavenly_a converse_n do_v much_o to_o dissolve_v and_o disperse_v the_o same_o may_v have_v great_a force_n to_o effect_v a_o constant_a attendance_n at_o prayer_n when_o yet_o want_v of_o consideration_n may_v betray_v man_n to_o formality_n and_o undue_a performance_n there_o be_v a_o fear_n of_o god_n so_o his_o worship_n of_o old_a be_v call_v which_o be_v teach_v by_o the_o precept_n of_o man_n matth._n 15.8_o and_o this_o be_v when_o man_n go_v to_o church_n mere_o to_o create_v scruple_n in_o themselves_o and_o infuse_v they_o into_o other_o but_o they_o must_v not_o rest_v here_o but_o while_o they_o constant_o go_v to_o prayer_n they_o must_v endeavour_v to_o exercise_v that_o fervent_a love_n to_o god_n and_o to_o our_o bless_a saviour_n and_o that_o divine_a joy_n in_o the_o hope_n of_o glory_n to_o come_v and_o to_o fore-taste_a the_o blessedness_n we_o shall_v partake_v of_o in_o the_o communion_n of_o saint_n above_o in_o these_o exercise_n wherein_o as_o saint_n we_o have_v communion_n here_o below_o and_o will_v to_o that_o purpose_n attend_v more_o diligent_o to_o the_o preparation_n wherewith_o they_o shall_v come_v to_o worship_n and_o to_o those_o expression_n whereby_o they_o honour_n god_n while_o they_o do_v so_o therefore_o i_o beseech_v these_o to_o who_o i_o write_v to_o consider_v that_o god_n will_v be_v sanctify_v in_o all_o those_o that_o come_v nigh_o to_o worship_n he_o and_o this_o he_o only_o be_v by_o those_o who_o worship_v he_o with_o a_o holy_a worship_n both_o internal_o and_o external_o which_o we_o do_v not_o except_o our_o mind_n be_v so_o dispose_v and_o our_o word_n and_o action_n so_o order_v as_o be_v aforesaid_a and_o as_o become_v the_o glory_n of_o god_n essence_n the_o immensity_n of_o his_o divine_a perfection_n the_o sense_n of_o our_o own_o concernment_n and_o of_o our_o relation_n to_o those_o we_o be_v to_o pray_v with_o and_o to_o pray_v for_o and_o so_o as_o be_v suitable_a to_o the_o several_a part_n of_o worship_n which_o we_o be_v to_o perform_v now_o these_o disposition_n can_v be_v attain_v but_o by_o serious_a and_o frequent_a meditation_n for_o there_o be_v a_o connexion_n in_o the_o duty_n of_o religion_n which_o make_v it_o impossible_a to_o perform_v some_o as_o we_o ought_v except_o we_o make_v conscience_n of_o other_o that_o be_v preparatory_a thereunto_o in_o this_o connexion_n i_o suppose_v meditation_n to_o be_v the_o first_o and_o he_o that_o make_v no_o conscience_n of_o that_o or_o know_v not_o how_o to_o perform_v it_o will_v be_v hardly_o bring_v to_o a_o good_a performance_n in_o any_o other_o duty_n especial_o this_o of_o our_o acceptance_n with_o god_n and_o the_o effect_n of_o prayer_n to_o our_o own_o benefit_n and_o consolation_n it_o depend_v on_o the_o preparation_n of_o such_o affection_n and_o such_o expression_n thereof_o as_o can_v never_o be_v without_o frequent_a meditation_n meditation_n in_o the_o most_o common_a sense_n of_o the_o word_n be_v take_v for_o more_o than_o bare_a think_n it_o be_v a_o think_v of_o thing_n that_o we_o may_v have_v such_o knowledge_n of_o they_o and_o esteem_v and_o affection_n towards_o they_o as_o we_o ought_v to_o have_v and_o so_o great_a a_o influence_n have_v the_o propose_a end_n into_o the_o efficacy_n of_o any_o action_n that_o i_o can_v expect_v that_o any_o man_n shall_v excite_v his_o devotion_n by_o think_v of_o thing_n though_o
