hope_n of_o recovery_n and_o thus_o you_o see_v that_o the_o true_a prophet_n bring_v the_o true_a word_n and_o bring_v it_o also_o by_o the_o true_a spirit_n and_o this_o manifest_v they_o to_o be_v of_o god_n but_o the_o false_a either_o bring_v not_o the_o true_a word_n or_o if_o they_o bring_v the_o word_n in_o the_o letter_n yet_o they_o bring_v it_o without_o the_o spirit_n and_o thus_o it_o be_v manifest_a they_o be_v not_o of_o god_n object_n but_o some_o will_v object_v here_o if_o a_o man_n preach_v the_o objection_n word_n in_o the_o letter_n even_o good_a sound_a and_o orthodox_n doctrine_n preacher_n no_o doubt_n but_o such_o a_o man_n be_v to_o be_v hear_v and_o he_o may_v do_v much_o good_a in_o the_o church_n though_o he_o want_v christ_n spirit_n this_o i_o have_v hear_v from_o very_a many_o who_o have_v think_v they_o have_v say_v something_o answ._n but_o to_o this_o i_o answer_v that_o they_o who_o want_v christ_n answer_n spirit_n which_o be_v the_o spirit_n of_o prophecy_n though_o they_o preach_v the_o exact_a letter_n of_o the_o word_n yet_o be_v false_a prophet_n and_o not_o to_o be_v hear_v by_o the_o sheep_n 1._o because_o under_o the_o new_a testament_n we_o be_v not_o to_o regard_v 1._o the_o letter_n without_o the_o spirit_n but_o the_o spirit_n as_o well_o as_o the_o letter_n yea_o the_o spirit_n more_o than_o the_o letter_n and_o therefore_o paul_n say_v that_o christ_n shall_v destroy_v antichrist_n with_o the_o spirit_n of_o his_o mouth_n and_o the_o brightness_n of_o his_o come_v he_o scarce_o take_v any_o notice_n of_o the_o letter_n but_o call_v the_o true_a preach_v of_o the_o gospel_n the_o spirit_n of_o christ_n mouth_n or_o the_o ministration_n of_o the_o spirit_n and_o therefore_o the_o spiritual_a people_n can_v join_v to_o letter_n of_o the_o word_n 2._o without_o the_o true_a spirit_n they_o make_v all_o thing_n outward_a in_o the_o church_n and_o so_o carry_v the_o people_n with_o who_o they_o prevail_v only_o to_o outward_a thing_n to_o a_o outward_a word_n to_o outward_a worship_n outward_a ordinance_n outward_a church_n outward_a government_n etc._n etc._n whereas_o in_o the_o true_a kingdom_n of_o christ_n all_o thing_n be_v inward_a and_o spiritual_a and_o all_o the_o true_a religion_n of_o christ_n be_v write_v in_o the_o soul_n and_o spirit_n of_o man_n by_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n and_o the_o believer_n be_v the_o only_a book_n in_o which_o god_n himself_o write_v his_o new_a testament_n 3._o they_o who_o preach_v the_o outward_a letter_n of_o the_o word_n 3._o though_o never_o so_o true_o without_o the_o spirit_n do_v as_o have_v be_v say_v whole_o mistake_v the_o mind_n of_o christ_n in_o the_o word_n for_o want_v of_o the_o spirit_n which_o be_v the_o only_a true_a and_o infallible_a interpreter_n of_o his_o mind_n and_o so_o under_o the_o outward_a letter_n of_o the_o word_n preach_v their_o own_o mind_n and_o not_o christ_n mind_n and_o do_v make_v all_o the_o scripture_n serve_v their_o own_o turn_v even_o their_o own_o worldly_a end_n and_o advantage_n and_o nothing_o else_o 4._o they_o that_o preach_v the_o outward_a letter_n of_o the_o word_n 4._o without_o the_o spirit_n can_v with_o such_o a_o word_n both_o live_v themselves_o in_o all_o the_o inward_a evil_n of_o corrupt_a nature_n and_o allow_v other_o to_o do_v so_o too_o and_o thus_o the_o gospel_n which_o in_o the_o spirit_n of_o it_o be_v the_o judgement_n of_o sin_n be_v make_v in_o the_o letter_n of_o it_o the_o cover_v for_o sin_n and_o the_o encourager_n of_o it_o see_v such_o man_n who_o have_v the_o letter_n of_o the_o word_n in_o their_o mouth_n do_v live_v in_o the_o inward_a corruption_n of_o their_o heart_n more_o secure_o and_o quiet_o than_o other_o men._n 5._o last_o of_o all_o let_v we_o know_v that_o whoever_o do_v agree_v 5._o with_o christ_n never_o so_o exact_o in_o the_o letter_n and_o yet_o differ_v from_o he_o in_o spirit_n be_v very_a antichrist_n and_o therefore_o when_o the_o devil_n in_o he_o that_o be_v possess_v say_v to_o christ_n we_o know_v thou_o who_o thou_o be_v the_o holy_a one_o of_o god_n and_o so_o agree_v very_o exact_o with_o the_o be_v in_o the_o spirit_n be_v against_o i_o though_o he_o have_v the_o same_o outward_a letter_n of_o the_o word_n with_o he_o and_o so_o as_o christ_n build_v up_o his_o church_n by_o his_o spirit_n through_o his_o word_n so_o antichrist_n build_v up_o his_o church_n by_o the_o word_n without_o the_o spirit_n and_o christ_n church_n and_o antichrist_n do_v often_o differ_v very_o little_a or_o nothing_o in_o word_n or_o letter_n yet_o do_v always_o infinite_o differ_v in_o spirit_n wherefore_o to_o conclude_v let_v we_o know_v that_o that_o church_n that_o have_v the_o word_n if_o it_o want_v the_o spirit_n be_v antichrist_n church_n and_o that_o that_o ministry_n that_o use_v the_o word_n and_o want_v the_o spirit_n be_v antichrist_n ministry_n and_o that_o all_o work_n duty_n praying_n preach_v fast_a thanksgiving_n etc._n etc._n without_o christ_n spirit_n be_v nothing_o but_o the_o very_a kingdom_n of_o antichrist_n and_o the_o abomination_n of_o desolation_n and_o so_o i_o proceed_v to_o the_o second_o general_a rule_n of_o trial_n which_o i_o propound_v whereby_o we_o may_v discern_v the_o true_a prophet_n spirit_n of_o christ_n from_o the_o false_a prophet_n of_o antichrist_n and_o that_o be_v by_o the_o truth_n of_o the_o life_n of_o christ_n in_o reference_n to_o his_o office_n in_o the_o word_n and_o here_o i_o shall_v give_v you_o many_o trial_n how_o you_o may_v christ._n certain_o know_v and_o discern_v the_o false_a prophet_n of_o antichrist_n from_o the_o true_a humble_a and_o faithful_a minister_n of_o jesus_n christ._n and_o the_o lord_n and_o obscene_a poet_n and_o by_o these_o heathenish_a abominable_a accomplishment_n be_v they_o make_v the_o more_o fit_a teacher_n for_o the_o world_n and_o worldly_a people_n and_o become_v the_o more_o suitable_a to_o they_o and_o obtain_v the_o great_a aptness_n and_o ability_n to_o please_v they_o wherefore_o it_o may_v be_v most_o true_o say_v of_o that_o ministry_n that_o flow_v mere_o from_o the_o fountain_n of_o the_o university_n that_o it_o be_v of_o the_o world_n and_o now_o when_o the_o teacher_n be_v of_o one_o nature_n and_o principle_n of_o one_o heart_n mind_n and_o consent_v with_o the_o hearer_n there_o must_v needs_o be_v a_o great_a agreement_n between_o they_o for_o each_o one_o approve_v and_o love_v that_o which_o be_v like_o himself_o and_o so_o the_o spiritual_a sense_n of_o they_o and_o as_o they_o be_v in_o themselves_o and_o according_a to_o the_o mind_n of_o christ_n they_o be_v the_o great_a enemy_n to_o they_o that_o can_v be_v now_o believer_n must_v know_v in_o this_o matter_n that_o whoever_o speak_v the_o thing_n of_o god_n spirit_n by_o the_o spirit_n of_o a_o man_n or_o spiritual_a thing_n in_o a_o humane_a carnal_a and_o worldly_a sense_n be_v a_o false_a prophet_n and_o teacher_n of_o antichrist_n whoever_o read_v or_o hear_v the_o gospel_n of_o god_n our_o saviour_n do_v understand_v and_o frame_v it_o after_o his_o own_o humane_a sense_n and_o do_v not_o so_o understand_v it_o as_o the_o lord_n have_v speak_v it_o he_o be_v a_o false_a prophet_n understanding_n and_o speak_v the_o gospel_n after_o his_o own_o mind_n but_o contrary_a to_o christ_n and_o these_o open_a their_o own_o heart_n to_o the_o people_n and_o not_o go_n now_o when_o the_o people_n that_o be_v of_o the_o world_n hear_v the_o teacher_n that_o be_v of_o the_o world_n speak_v spiritual_a thing_n in_o a_o carnal_a and_o worldly_a sense_n and_o according_a to_o such_o a_o apprehension_n as_o they_o have_v already_o in_o their_o own_o heart_n they_o do_v exceed_o cleave_v to_o and_o embrace_v such_o teacher_n and_o their_o doctrine_n for_o such_o doctrine_n man_n in_o his_o natural_a condition_n can_v well_o like_a of_o see_v it_o lead_v man_n only_o to_o a_o change_n of_o outward_a work_n and_o to_o a_o performance_n of_o outward_a worship_n which_o any_o man_n by_o his_o own_o natural_a ability_n can_v perform_v and_o the_o world_n can_v well_o endure_v to_o put_v on_o the_o fair_a form_n of_o godliness_n and_o the_o strict_a so_o their_o nature_n inward_o may_v remain_v the_o same_o and_o thus_o the_o worldly_a people_n comply_v ready_o with_o the_o worldly_a doctrine_n of_o the_o worldly_a teacher_n see_v it_o be_v after_o the_o sense_n and_o mind_n of_o man._n but_o on_o the_o contrary_a christ_n and_o his_o seed_n as_o they_o be_v not_o of_o the_o world_n so_o neither_o do_v they_o speak_v of_o the_o world_n but_o be_v of_o god_n they_o speak_v the_o thing_n of_o god_n according_a to_o god_n they_o speak_v of_o the_o thing_n of_o god_n by_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n and_o so_o according_a to_o the_o mind_n of_o god_n they_o speak_v of_o the_o thing_n of_o god_n in_o the_o wisdom_n righteousness_n truth_n light_n and_o life_n of_o god_n and_o thus_o the_o world_n can_v endure_v the_o word_n nor_o those_o that_o teach_v it_o 2._o the_o prophet_n of_o antichrist_n speak_v of_o the_o world_n that_o be_v 2._o end_n they_o turn_v the_o word_n of_o god_n into_o worldly_a and_o carnal_a doctrine_n for_o worldly_a advantage_n sake_n they_o preach_v the_o spiritual_a word_n of_o god_n carnal_o that_o they_o may_v make_v it_o serve_v their_o own_o turn_v and_o ends._n that_o word_n of_o the_o gospel_n which_o god_n have_v give_v only_o to_o serve_v the_o spiritual_a and_o eternal_a welfare_n of_o his_o church_n the_o worldly_a teacher_n frame_n and_o use_v this_o only_o thereby_o to_o serve_v their_o own_o worldly_a credit_n and_o reputation_n their_o worldly_a profit_n and_o preferment_n and_o their_o worldly_a authority_n and_o dominion_n and_o thus_o that_o word_n of_o faith_n which_o in_o its_o own_o proper_a nature_n and_o work_v call_v off_o all_o man_n from_o this_o world_n and_o the_o thing_n of_o it_o to_o the_o kingdom_n and_o glory_n of_o god_n they_o make_v this_o very_a word_n to_o sound_v carnal_o that_o by_o it_o they_o may_v seek_v themselves_o and_o the_o thing_n of_o this_o present_a life_n but_o christ_n and_o his_o seed_n who_o be_v of_o god_n they_o speak_v of_o god_n and_o not_o of_o the_o world_n seek_v no_o worldly_a thing_n at_o all_o by_o the_o word_n of_o god_n which_o they_o teach_v and_o hold_v forth_o as_o be_v manifest_a in_o the_o life_n of_o christ_n and_o his_o christian_n 3._o the_o minister_n of_o antichrist_n or_o worldly_a teacher_n speak_v 3._o cross._n of_o the_o world_n that_o be_v they_o turn_v the_o word_n of_o god_n into_o worldly_a doctrine_n that_o thereby_o they_o may_v avoid_v
the_o cross_n which_o the_o word_n of_o god_n in_o the_o spiritual_a sense_n of_o it_o will_v certain_o expose_v they_o to_o but_o now_o these_o worldly_a teacher_n as_o they_o love_v the_o world_n so_o they_o can_v endure_v the_o cross_n that_o be_v reproach_n poverty_n shame_n suffering_n and_o death_n for_o the_o true_a word_n wherefore_o they_o preach_v the_o gospel_n in_o such_o a_o sense_n as_o shall_v please_v the_o world_n but_o never_o offend_v they_o as_o shall_v make_v the_o world_n their_o friend_n but_o never_o their_o enemy_n for_o they_o can_v endure_v to_o think_v of_o much_o less_o to_o suffer_v the_o utmost_a hatred_n and_o persecution_n of_o the_o world_n for_o christ_n name_n sake_n wherefore_o i_o say_v again_o though_o in_o christ_n they_o will_v praise_v his_o the_o world_n in_o this_o sense_n also_o but_o christ_n and_o his_o seed_n who_o be_v of_o god_n they_o speak_v not_o of_o the_o world_n but_o of_o god_n that_o be_v they_o speak_v the_o word_n of_o god_n according_a to_o god_n never_o regard_v whether_o the_o world_n be_v please_v or_o displease_v therewith_o yea_o they_o speak_v god_n word_n according_a to_o god_n mind_n though_o they_o certain_o know_v that_o it_o will_v procure_v they_o all_o sort_n of_o reproach_n and_o tribulation_n and_o all_o manner_n of_o evil_a to_o be_v speak_v and_o do_v against_o they_o in_o as_o much_o to_o wit_n the_o world_n and_o worldly_a people_n as_o also_o the_o ground_n why_o they_o prevail_v with_o they_o namely_o because_o they_o be_v of_o the_o world_n and_o speak_v of_o the_o world_n
