this_o sin_n home_o upon_o they_o object_n but_o it_o may_v be_v object_v that_o the_o altar_n of_o jerusalem_n be_v also_o erect_v by_o man_n why_o shall_v they_o not_o reject_v that_o as_o well_o as_o the_o rest_n to_o come_v unto_o god_n ans_fw-fr i_o answer_v this_o altar_n differ_v very_o much_o from_o other_o altar_n for_o albeit_o it_o be_v compose_v of_o lime_n and_o stone_n and_o deck_v with_o gold_n and_o silver_n and_o make_v with_o man_n hand_n as_o other_o be_v yet_o ought_v they_o not_o to_o respect_v either_o the_o matter_n or_o workmanship_n but_o god_n himself_o which_o be_v the_o author_n of_o it_o at_o who_o commandment_n this_o altar_n be_v set_v up_o and_o therefore_o the_o essential_a form_n as_o you_o will_v say_v which_o it_o have_v receive_v by_o the_o word_n of_o god_n must_v be_v consider_v and_o none_o account_v to_o be_v make_v of_o the_o rest_n because_o god_n himself_o be_v the_o master_n builder_n of_o it_o as_o for_o other_o altar_n howsoever_o they_o somewhat_o resemble_v that_o at_o jerusalem_n yet_o be_v they_o detestable_a because_o they_o have_v receive_v no_o authority_n from_o god_n word_n and_o the_o like_a reckon_n may_v we_o make_v of_o all_o the_o invention_n of_o man_n brain_n let_v they_o have_v what_o goodly_a appearance_n soever_o of_o holiness_n you_o will_v word_n god_n
reason_n of_o that_o lawlesnesse_n which_o be_v in_o they_o for_o as_o much_o as_o the_o jew_n than_o have_v proud_o give_v up_o themselves_o to_o all_o dissoluteness_n of_o life_n he_o set_v god_n just_a judgement_n before_o they_o for_o joy_n be_v then_o just_o cut_v off_o from_o we_o us._n when_o joy_n be_v just_o cut_v off_o from_o us._n when_o we_o know_v not_o how_o to_o entertain_v the_o the_o city_n true_a it_o be_v that_o some_o translate_v the_o word_n shammah_n desolation_n but_o both_o the_o word_n come_v all_o to_o one_o sense_n he_o make_v mention_n of_o the_o gate_n because_o a_o man_n may_v perceive_v by_o they_o whether_o the_o city_n be_v full_a of_o people_n or_o no_o for_o thither_o they_o all_o come_v and_o there_o justice_n be_v administer_v first_o then_o he_o speak_v of_o the_o whole_a city_n in_o general_a and_o then_o note_v one_o particular_a for_o amplification_n sake_n for_o albeit_o city_n be_v destitute_a of_o inhabitant_n yet_o some_o may_v be_v see_v at_o the_o gate_n but_o if_o they_o be_v empty_a the_o desolation_n must_v needs_o be_v great_a throughout_o the_o city_n verse_n 13_o sure_o thus_o shall_v it_o be_v in_o the_o midst_n of_o the_o earth_n among_o the_o people_n as_o the_o shake_n of_o a_o olive_n tree_n 17.6_o chap._n 17.6_o and_o as_o the_o grape_n when_o the_o vintage_n be_v end_v in_o as_o much_o as_o this_o sentence_n come_v in_o between_o the_o threathing_n and_o the_o consolation_n it_o seem_v he_o shall_v only_o speak_v to_o the_o elect_a and_o not_o to_o all_o the_o people_n indifferent_o unless_o we_o will_v christ_n through_o who_o it_o be_v no_o marvel_v if_o the_o gentile_n have_v some_o part_n of_o the_o promise_n of_o salvation_n the_o prophet_n have_v already_o use_v this_o similitude_n chapter_n 17.6_o but_o there_o he_o only_o mention_v the_o church_n of_o the_o jew_n tell_v they_o that_o a_o small_a remnant_n shall_v still_o remain_v of_o the_o holy_a seed_n lest_o the_o faithful_a may_v think_v the_o church_n utterlie_o root_v out_o for_o as_o when_o a_o olive_n tree_n be_v shake_v there_o will_v always_o be_v some_o leave_v here_o and_o there_o and_o likewise_o grape_n upon_o the_o vine_n so_o shall_v there_o remain_v a_o after_o gather_v as_o it_o be_v of_o the_o faithful_a in_o that_o great_a destruction_n wherewith_o the_o church_n shall_v be_v oppress_v but_o in_o this_o place_n he_o extend_v this_o promise_n unto_o other_o part_n of_o the_o world_n according_a as_o they_o shall_v partake_v in_o the_o same_o grace_n by_o the_o mean_n of_o christ_n yet_o he_o the_o sound_n thereof_o now_o because_o the_o jew_n be_v the_o first_o fruit_n of_o the_o believer_n i_o willing_o grant_v that_o they_o be_v place_v in_o the_o first_o rank_n desolation_n a_o consolation_n fit_v the_o time_n of_o the_o church_n desolation_n hence_o we_o gather_v a_o singular_a consolation_n to_o wit_n that_o the_o lord_n in_o a_o moment_n can_v restore_v his_o church_n unto_o a_o most_o flourish_a estate_n yea_o and_o create_v it_o of_o nothing_o for_o out_o of_o death_n he_o draw_v life_n even_o as_o often_o as_o it_o please_v he_o but_o be_v it_o not_o a_o wonder_n and_o above_o the_o order_n of_o nature_n that_o so_o small_a a_o remnant_n in_o lift_v up_o their_o voice_n 16._o see_v vers_fw-la 16._o shall_v be_v hear_v so_o far_o off_o for_o where_o few_o be_v there_o be_v silence_n and_o great_a noise_n be_v wont_a to_o be_v where_o great_a multitude_n be_v gather_v together_o this_o then_o be_v the_o work_n of_o god_n which_o far_o surmount_v nature_n and_o whatsoever_o faculty_n else_o be_v in_o man_n otherwise_o it_o seem_v the_o prophet_n shall_v contradict_v himself_o to_o wit_n that_o all_o judea_n shall_v be_v waste_v and_o all_o the_o world_n bring_v to_o nothing_o and_o yet_o that_o their_o cry_n shall_v be_v hear_v every_o where_n this_o in_o itself_o be_v incredible_a or_o rather_o ridiculous_a if_o we_o measure_v the_o thing_n by_o carnal_a sense_n it_o be_v therefore_o as_o we_o have_v say_v to_o be_v ascribe_v whole_o to_o the_o admirable_a power_n and_o work_v of_o god_n by_o their_o cry_n he_o not_o only_o mean_v the_o voice_n of_o gladness_n which_o be_v express_v by_o mirth_n and_o rejoice_v joy_n i'faith_o the_o ground_n of_o true_a joy_n but_o he_o also_o comprehend_v under_o it_o trust_v and_o confidence_n because_o they_o shall_v free_o bold_o and_o with_o a_o loud_a voice_n publish_v the_o praise_n of_o the_o lord_n now_o herewithal_o he_o admonish_v the_o faithful_a that_o it_o be_v their_o duty_n to_o cause_n god_n grace_n in_o they_o to_o be_v magnify_v and_o not_o their_o own_o by_o the_o sea_n conceal_v god_n mercy_n must_v not_o be_v conceal_v it_o be_v well_o enough_o unto_o for_o the_o good_a conservation_n of_o a_o vine_n to_o wit_n that_o it_o be_v well_o husband_v and_o well_o fence_v by_o water_v of_o it_o he_o comprehend_v whatsoever_o belong_v to_o the_o dress_n and_o manure_v of_o it_o wherein_o he_o promise_v to_o leave_v no_o duty_n unperformed_a whereby_o the_o good_a thereof_o may_v be_v procure_v but_o unto_o this_o vigilancy_n must_v needs_o thorn_n and_o brier_n which_o he_o will_v quick_o consume_v with_o the_o fire_n of_o his_o indignation_n but_o if_o any_o have_v rather_o say_v that_o the_o prophet_n here_o tax_v the_o doubt_n which_o often_o trouble_v we_o by_o reason_n of_o our_o own_o infidelity_n when_o we_o feel_v the_o anger_n of_o god_n to_o be_v kindle_v against_o we_o as_o if_o he_o shall_v say_v you_o much_o deceive_v yourselves_o in_o that_o you_o compare_v i_o to_o a_o thorn_n and_o a_o briar_n that_o be_v to_o say_v in_o attribute_v a_o cruel_a or_o froward_a disposition_n of_o nature_n unto_o i_o if_o i_o have_v be_v heretofore_o this_o also_o seem_v so_o constrain_v that_o it_o need_v no_o further_a refutation_n i_o grant_v that_o as_o god_n be_v gracious_a and_o merciful_a by_o nature_n so_o nothing_o go_v more_o against_o the_o same_o then_o roughness_n and_o severity_n as_o one_o that_o be_v constrain_v to_o borrow_v another_o nature_n as_o it_o be_v from_o other_o when_o he_o will_v church_n shall_v continue_v safe_a grant_v we_o must_v dwell_v in_o zion_n and_o in_o jerusalem_n if_o we_o will_v have_v our_o request_n hear_v and_o grant_v he_o begin_v at_o mount_n zion_n where_o the_o temple_n be_v erect_v and_o say_v that_o the_o lord_n shall_v yet_o be_v there_o call_v upon_o then_o he_o add_v that_o it_o shall_v be_v also_o in_o jerusalem_n thereby_o understand_v the_o spread_a and_o increase_v of_o the_o church_n together_o with_o the_o restauration_n of_o such_o thing_n as_o before_o be_v ruinate_v in_o the_o mean_a while_o he_o advertise_v they_o that_o last_v always_o the_o church_n that_o be_v all_o the_o faithful_a shall_v be_v in_o great_a heaviness_n while_o they_o remain_v in_o so_o miserable_a and_o in_o so_o woeful_a a_o estate_n but_o isaiah_n tell_v they_o that_o this_o their_o sorrow_n shall_v have_v a_o end_n and_o in_o this_o sense_n be_v it_o say_v in_o psal_n 126.9_o that_o those_o which_o sow_v in_o tear_n shall_v reap_v in_o joy_n the_o lord_n often_o suffer_v we_o to_o be_v press_v with_o wonderful_a anguish_n but_o in_o the_o end_n he_o will_v relieve_v we_o and_o give_v we_o matter_n of_o gladness_n to_o wit_n when_o he_o turn_v the_o captivity_n of_o zion_n joy_n the_o return_v of_o zions_n captivity_n the_o matter_n of_o our_o true_a joy_n for_o this_o be_v the_o true_a joy_n of_o the_o faithful_a moreover_o in_o as_o much_o as_o it_o be_v a_o thing_n very_o difficult_a to_o rejoice_v whilst_o the_o token_n of_o god_n judgement_n present_v themselves_o to_o our_o view_n on_o every_o side_n the_o prophet_n set_v the_o cause_n of_o joy_n before_o we_o in_o his_o mercy_n mercy_n our_o joy_n flow_v from_o god_n show_v of_o mercy_n for_o we_o may_v assure_v ourselves_o that_o all_o joy_n and_o rejoice_v shall_v return_v and_o abound_v as_o soon_o as_o god_n anger_n shall_v be_v appease_v towards_o we_o according_a as_o we_o have_v before_o allege_v that_o famous_a say_n of_o the_o prophet_n abacuch_n that_o in_o the_o mid_n of_o wrath_n the_o lord_n remember_v mercy_n 37._o though_o god_n be_v most_o ready_a to_o show_v mercy_n yet_o will_v he_o be_v seek_v unto_o ezek._n 36_o 37._o and_o never_o so_o far_o afflict_v his_o church_n but_o he_o limit_n moderate_v and_o measure_v his_o blow_n by_o judgement_n our_o prophet_n likewise_o show_v by_o what_o mean_v we_o may_v obtain_v this_o grace_n in_o say_v it_o shall_v be_v when_o god_n shall_v hear_v the_o voice_n of_o thy_o cry_n for_o in_o these_o word_n he_o incite_v and_o provoke_v the_o faithful_a to_o prayer_n out_o of_o her_o grave_n oh_o let_v we_o cry_v unto_o the_o lord_n that_o he_o may_v hear_v the_o voice_n of_o our_o cry_n prayer_n no_o look_v for_o succour_n without_o the_o affection_n of_o prayer_n sigh_n and_o groan_n for_o alas_o if_o we_o be_v void_a of_o the_o affection_n of_o prayer_n how_o can_v we_o look_v for_o any_o succour_n of_o he_o to_o answer_v here_o signify_v nothing_o let_v we_o not_o think_v he_o will_v forthwith_o answer_v our_o crieâ—_n why_o so_o many_o time_n there_o be_v much_o weakness_n of_o we_o mingle_v with_o they_o so_o as_o they_o be_v disorder_v by_o reason_n of_o our_o unbridled_a passion_n he_o will_v assist_v we_o when_o it_o shall_v be_v expedient_a for_o we_o so_o as_o we_o shall_v prove_v by_o experience_n that_o he_o have_v respect_v our_o salvation_n verse_n 20._o and_o when_o the_o lord_n have_v give_v you_o the_o bread_n of_o adversity_n and_o water_n of_o affliction_n thy_o rain_n shall_v be_v no_o more_o keep_v back_o but_o thy_o take_v order_n by_o some_o other_o mean_n that_o the_o government_n of_o the_o kingdom_n shall_v still_o have_v continue_v in_o the_o stock_n of_o david_n but_o that_o which_o he_o be_v bind_v to_o time_n verse_n 6._o and_o i_o will_v deliver_v thou_o out_o of_o the_o hand_n of_o the_o king_n of_o ashur_n and_o this_o city_n for_o i_o will_v defend_v this_o city_n those_o who_o think_v that_o hezekias_n be_v sick_a during_o the_o siege_n ground_n their_o argument_n upon_o this_o verse_n because_o otherwise_o they_o think_v this_o promise_n shall_v be_v superfluous_a but_o their_o reason_n want_v weight_n for_o the_o assyrian_a may_v well_o gather_v his_o force_n together_o again_o and_o prepare_v a_o fresh_a army_n both_o to_o invade_v judeah_n and_o to_o besiege_v jerusalem_n yea_o that_o discomfiture_n which_o he_o have_v before_o may_v so_o kindle_v his_o rage_n and_o fury_n as_o to_o give_v a_o new_a onset_n the_o jew_n then_o you_o see_v may_v just_o tremble_v when_o any_o shall_v signify_v some_o news_n to_o they_o touch_v the_o enemy_n approach_v this_o promise_n therefore_o be_v not_o superfluous_a for_o with_o the_o hope_n of_o life_n isaiah_n secure_v he_o from_o
