24_o you_o see_v then_o how_o that_o by_o work_n a_o man_n be_v justify_v &_o not_o by_o faith_n only_o dot_v not_o contradict_v the_o apostle_n paul_n who_o say_v &_o conclude_v that_o a_o man_n be_v justify_v by_o faith_n without_o the_o deed_n of_o the_o law_n rom._n 3_o 28._o but_o a_o question_n be_v here_o make_v whether_o we_o shall_v interpret_v james_n word_n by_o paul_n or_o paul_n by_o irrefragable_a for_o 1_o it_o be_v a_o receive_a way_n of_o interpret_n scripture_n that_o when_o two_o place_n seem_v to_o be_v repugnant_a unto_o other_o that_o place_n which_o treat_v of_o the_o matter_n direct_o design_o express_o &_o large_o be_v to_o regulate_v our_o interpretation_n of_o the_o other_o place_n where_o the_o matter_n be_v only_o touch_v obiter_fw-la on_o the_o bye_n and_o upon_o some_o other_o occasion_n and_o in_o order_n to_o some_o other_o end_n and_o that_o therefore_o according_o we_o must_v interpret_v james_n by_o paul_n and_o not_o paul_n by_o james_n see_v it_o be_v undenible_a that_o paul_n write_v of_o this_o subject_a of_o justification_n direct_o &_o on_o purpose_n to_o clear_v up_o the_o same_o and_o that_o with_o all_o expresness_n &_o fullness_n on_o several_a occasion_n dispute_v the_o same_o in_o a_o clear_a &_o formal_a manner_n with_o all_o sort_n of_o argument_n artificial_a &_o inartificial_a and_o answer_v objection_n that_o may_v be_v move_v against_o the_o same_o at_o large_a and_o with_o a_o special_a accuracie_n but_o on_o the_o other_o hand_n it_o be_v as_o certain_a that_o james_n have_v not_o this_o for_o his_o scope_n to_o open_v up_o the_o nature_n of_o justification_n but_o only_o touch_v there-upon_a in_o order_n to_o the_o other_o end_n which_o he_o be_v prosecute_a 2_o there_o be_v no_o ground_n to_o suppose_v that_o it_o be_v the_o design_n of_o james_n to_o explain_v the_o meaning_n of_o paul_n no_o footstep_n of_o any_o such_o purpose_n appear_v for_o than_o his_o main_a business_n shall_v be_v to_o explain_v &_o clear_v up_o the_o doctrine_n of_o justification_n which_o neither_o be_v apparent_a from_o this_o part_n of_o the_o epistle_n nor_o from_o any_o part_n of_o it_o at_o all_o his_o design_n be_v quite_o another_o thing_n as_o be_v obvious_a 3_o nor_o be_v there_o any_o necessity_n for_o james_n to_o vindicate_v the_o doctrine_n of_o paul_n from_o such_o corrupt_a inference_n as_o adversary_n suppose_v be_v make_v therefrom_o for_o as_o to_o any_o such_o as_o may_v be_v make_v to_o wit_n as_o if_o he_o have_v give_v any_o countenance_n unto_o such_o as_o be_v willing_a to_o lay_v aside_o good_a work_n he_o himself_o do_v full_o &_o sufficient_o vindicate_v his_o own_o doctrine_n by_o show_v on_o all_o occasion_n the_o necessity_n of_o good_a work_n and_o particular_o when_o he_o be_v speak_v of_o justification_n not_o only_o in_o his_o epistle_n to_o the_o roman_n and_o to_o the_o galatian_n where_o he_o large_o &_o profess_o treat_v of_o that_o matter_n but_o even_o when_o he_o be_v but_o mention_v the_o same_o on_o other_o occasion_n as_o we_o see_v ephes._n 2_o 8_o 9_o 10._o phil._n 3_o 9_o 10_o 11_o etc._n etc._n &_o tit._n 3_o 5_o 6_o 7_o 8._o so_o that_o to_o imagine_v that_o james_n assert_v another_o interest_n of_o work_n in_o our_o justification_n than_o paul_n do_v and_o that_o to_o explain_v paul_n meaning_n be_v not_o to_o reconcile_v these_o apostle_n but_o to_o set_v they_o at_o further_a variance_n &_o enmity_n and_o it_o can_v comport_v with_o sobriety_n to_o think_v or_o say_v that_o james_n to_o clear_v the_o apostle_n paul_n doctrine_n and_o to_o vindicate_v it_o from_o objection_n shall_v speak_v to_o the_o same_o objection_n which_o paul_n himself_o have_v speak_v to_o &_o full_o remove_v and_o that_o james_n shall_v give_v such_o answer_n unto_o these_o objection_n as_o paul_n will_v not_o give_v but_o rather_o reject_v and_o yet_o this_o must_v be_v say_v by_o our_o adversary_n here_o it_o will_v be_v of_o great_a use_n to_o we_o here_o to_o understand_v aright_o what_o be_v the_o plain_a scope_n &_o drift_n of_o the_o apostle_n james_n for_o as_o for_o the_o design_n &_o scope_n of_o paul_n in_o his_o discourse_n of_o justification_n it_o be_v so_o obvious_o manifest_a unto_o all_o that_o read_v the_o same_o that_o no_o doubt_n can_v be_v make_v thereof_o to_o wit_n to_o clear_v up_o stumble_n of_o such_o as_o love_v to_o walk_v in_o the_o light_n he_o advance_v several_a answer_n pag._n 62._o etc._n etc._n as_o i._o he_o never_o say_v that_o the_o active_a righteousness_n of_o christ_n shall_v be_v make_v a_o stander-by_n but_o that_o it_o have_v a_o bless_a influence_n into_o justification_n as_o it_o issue_v into_o his_o passive_a obedience_n which_o together_o may_v be_v to_o use_v here_o philosophik_a term_n 3_o that_o to_o call_v christ_n whole_a righteousness_n either_o the_o material_a or_o formal_a cause_n of_o justification_n be_v to_o overthrow_v the_o merit_n of_o it_o be_v say_v but_o not_o prove_v it_o be_v not_o these_o philosophical_a term_n themselves_o but_o the_o explication_n of_o they_o by_o such_o as_o use_v they_o in_o this_o matter_n that_o be_v to_o be_v regard_v and_o none_o shall_v ever_o show_v that_o either_o of_o these_o term_n as_o explain_v by_o the_o orthodox_n do_v overthrow_v the_o merit_n of_o christ_n righteousness_n both_o do_v rather_o establish_v it_o he_o say_v 2._o the_o h._n ghost_n may_v reject_v the_o work_n of_o man_n from_o be_v the_o cause_n of_o such_o or_o such_o a_o thing_n &_o yet_o no_o way_n
