advantage_n against_o they_o but_o heap_n many_o comfort_n upon_o they_o thereby_o to_o lead_v they_o and_o draw_v they_o to_o himself_o but_o they_o common_o make_v but_o a_o ill_a use_n and_o improvement_n of_o it_o by_o be_v from_o hence_o so_o much_o the_o more_o harden_v and_o confirm_v in_o sin_n they_o despise_v that_o goodness_n which_o they_o shall_v embrace_v and_o the_o author_n of_o it_o as_o so_o much_o the_o great_a aggravation_n of_o wickedness_n and_o sinfulness_n in_o they_o the_o mercy_n which_o god_n bestow_v upon_o the_o public_a and_o so_o upon_o themselves_o in_o commonwith_o other_o and_o the_o mercy_n which_o god_n bestow_v upon_o they_o in_o private_a for_o their_o own_o particular_n each_o of_o these_o be_v misimprove_v by_o they_o as_o it_o be_v say_v concern_v the_o israelite_n jeshuron_n wax_v fat_a and_o kick_v and_o when_o god_n feed_v they_o with_o quayle_n and_o manna_n give_v they_o drink_v and_o water_n out_o of_o the_o rock_n deliver_v they_o out_o of_o the_o hand_n of_o their_o enemy_n by_o a_o strong_a hand_n and_o a_o stretch_v out_o arm_n yet_o they_o forget_v the_o work_n of_o the_o lord_n and_o all_o the_o wonder_n that_o he_o have_v wrought_v for_o they_o which_o he_o take_v as_o a_o contemn_v of_o himself_o thus_o esay_n 5.12_o the_o harp_n and_o viol_n the_o tabret_n and_o the_o pipe_n and_o the_o wine_n be_v in_o their_o feast_n but_o they_o regard_v not_o the_o work_n of_o the_o lord_n nor_o the_o operation_n of_o his_o hand_n whether_o in_o judgement_n or_o if_o we_o will_v also_o in_o mercy_n the_o great_a concern_v his_o command_n when_o afterward_o he_o be_v follow_v with_o god_n plague_n and_o have_v any_o respite_n of_o they_o he_o still_o persist_v and_o contemn_v he_o in_o his_o judgement_n and_o that_o be_v the_o second_o explication_n of_o this_o observation_n the_o three_o and_o last_o be_v in_o his_o servant_n and_o those_o which_o belong_v unto_o he_o we_o know_v how_o in_o the_o affair_n of_o the_o world_n contempt_n it_o do_v oftentimes_o proceed_v and_o express_v itself_o in_o this_o not_o only_o as_o to_o man_n person_n but_o as_o to_o their_o relation_n thus_o be_v parent_n contemn_v in_o their_o child_n master_n in_o their_o servant_n prince_n in_o their_o ambassador_n and_o the_o like_a and_o thus_o be_v god_n also_o contemn_v in_o those_o that_o have_v relation_n to_o christ_n which_o be_v another_o consideration_n of_o his_o servant_n it_o hold_v here_o also_o when_o these_o come_v to_o we_o in_o the_o name_n of_o christ_n and_o by_o authority_n from_o he_o and_o we_o shall_v contemn_v they_o in_o the_o discharge_n of_o their_o office_n it_o reach_v to_o christ_n he_o that_o despise_v you_o say_v he_o despise_v i_o and_o he_o that_o despise_v i_o despise_v experience_n in_o his_o ordinance_n in_o his_o providence_n and_o in_o his_o servant_n now_o it_o will_v he_o further_o inquire_v whence_o this_o do_v proceed_v in_o they_o because_o it_o seem_v some_o what_o strange_a that_o indeed_o it_o shall_v be_v so_o what_o may_v we_o then_o conceive_v to_o be_v the_o ground_n or_o occasion_n of_o it_o sure_o there_o be_v a_o twofold_a ground_n which_o may_v be_v assign_v of_o it_o as_o be_v usual_o observable_a in_o other_o contumely_n in_o the_o world_n the_o one_o as_o proceed_n from_o pride_n and_o the_o other_o from_o ignorance_n these_o two_o of_o his_o countenance_n that_o be_v indeed_o through_o the_o pride_n of_o his_o heart_n which_o do_v usual_o express_v and_o manifest_v itself_o in_o the_o countenance_n this_o be_v that_o which_o make_v he_o not_o to_o seek_v after_o god_n but_o to_o neglect_v he_o because_o he_o think_v with_o himself_o that_o he_o can_v do_v well_o enough_o without_o he_o selfsufficiency_n it_o dispose_v man_n to_o pride_n and_o so_o consequent_o to_o contemptuousness_n those_o that_o apprehend_v themselves_o independent_a be_v scornful_a and_o while_o they_o think_v they_o can_v subsist_v of_o themselves_o they_o subject_a to_o despise_v other_o yea_o sometime_o even_o god_n himself_o

as_o the_o drop_n of_o a_o bucket_n and_o be_v account_v as_o the_o small_a dust_n of_o the_o balance_n behold_v he_o take_v up_o the_o isle_n as_o a_o very_a little_a thing_n the_o lord_n be_v high_a above_o all_o nation_n and_o his_o glory_n above_o the_o heaven_n psal_n 113.4_o he_o increase_v the_o nation_n and_o destroy_v they_o he_o enlarge_v the_o nation_n and_o straitn_v they_o again_o job_n 12.23_o who_o smite_v great_a nation_n and_o slay_v mighty_a king_n psal_n 135.10_o second_o the_o importunity_n of_o sin_n and_o gild_n that_o make_v for_o this_o likewise_o nahum_n 1.12_o though_o they_o be_v quiet_a and_o likewise_o many_o yet_o thus_o shall_v they_o be_v cut_v down_o when_o he_o shall_v pass_v through_o say_v the_o lord_n there_o by_o his_o prophet_n because_o their_o sin_n call_v for_o vengeance_n as_o we_o see_v it_o be_v with_o the_o sodomite_n and_o tâ—â—_n city_n round_o about_o they_o whilst_o the_o cry_v of_o their_o wickedness_n ascend_v and_o fear_v thou_o o_o king_n of_o nation_n as_o it_o be_v in_o jer._n 10.7_o what_o cause_n have_v all_o the_o people_n and_o kingdom_n of_o the_o earth_n to_o tremble_v before_o this_o great_a god_n who_o be_v able_a thus_o to_o crush_v they_o in_o piece_n and_o to_o destroy_v they_o even_o in_o hell_n itself_o if_o they_o provoke_v he_o as_o he_o here_o threaten_v they_o we_o shall_v here_o learn_v to_o satisfy_v ourselves_o in_o this_o great_a mystery_n both_o of_o prudence_n and_o religion_n it_o seem_v to_o be_v a_o strange_a thing_n to_o reason_n that_o god_n shall_v damn_v whole_a nation_n and_o therefore_o such_o person_n as_o make_v reason_n to_o be_v the_o rule_n of_o faith_n they_o do_v much_o doubt_n of_o it_o and_o call_v it_o into_o question_n for_o which_o purpose_n they_o have_v find_v out_o salvation_n even_o for_o the_o heathen_a that_o know_v not_o god_n nor_o ever_o hear_v word_n of_o christ_n but_o we_o see_v here_o how_o the_o scripture_n itself_o express_v itself_o in_o this_o particular_a whereby_o it_o tell_v we_o that_o whole_a nation_n shall_v be_v turn_v into_o hell_n that_o so_o we_o may_v not_o be_v wise_a or_o mercifull_a than_o god_n himself_o but_o submit_v our_o own_o reason_n and_o the_o dictate_v of_o our_o own_o understanding_n to_o his_o discovery_n and_o proposal_n and_o in_o the_o mean_a time_n bless_v god_n ourselves_o if_o he_o have_v exempt_v we_o out_o of_o the_o number_n of_o those_o nation_n which_o shall_v be_v thus_o deal_v withal_o by_o a_o more_o peculiar_a manifestation_n and_o dispensation_n of_o himself_o unto_o we_o thus_o for_o the_o subject_n here_o mention_v in_o reference_n to_o this_o punishment_n all_o the_o nation_n the_o second_o be_v the_o guilt_n which_o be_v fustn_v upon_o those_o subject_n as_o the_o ground_n and_o foundation_n of_o this_o punishment_n and_o that_o be_v forget_v of_o god_n this_o now_o do_v a_o little_a qualify_v it_o and_o restrain_v it_o and_o take_v it_o in_o it_o be_v not_o all_o nation_n absolute_o and_o indefinite_o and_o without_o exception_n howsoever_o qualify_v but_o under_o this_o notion_n of_o impiety_n god_n do_v not_o in_o this_o case_n proceed_v in_o a_o way_n of_o sovereignty_n but_o in_o a_o way_n of_o justice_n it_o be_v true_a he_o may_v if_o he_o please_v do_v the_o former_a forasmuch_o as_o all_o the_o nation_n of_o the_o character_n whereby_o a_o wicked_a people_n be_v distinguish_v viz._n forgetfulness_n of_o god_n as_o that_o which_o carry_v the_o very_a root_n of_o all_o wickedness_n in_o it_o for_o hence_o it_o be_v that_o any_o person_n do_v make_v so_o bold_a with_o god_n as_o common_o they_o do_v by_o offend_v he_o and_o rebel_n against_o he_o because_o indeed_o they_o be_v such_o as_o do_v forget_v he_o and_o think_v not_o of_o he_o this_o forgetfulness_n of_o god_n which_o wicked_a man_n be_v thus_o guilty_a of_o to_o explain_v it_o a_o little_a to_o you_o it_o extend_v to_o sundry_a particular_n first_o to_o the_o essence_n of_o god_n they_o forget_v god_n that_o be_v they_o forget_v that_o there_o be_v a_o god_n they_o have_v hear_v of_o it_o it_o may_v be_v and_o have_v see_v habitual_a notion_n of_o it_o yea_o but_o in_o such_o and_o such_o case_n and_o circumstance_n they_o do_v it_o or_o reflect_v upon_o it_o they_o do_v not_o actual_o mind_n or_o consider_v it_o which_o make_v they_o so_o to_o carry_v it_o as_o if_o indeed_o they_o do_v not_o believe_v it_o second_o to_o the_o nature_n of_o god_n they_o forget_v god_n that_o be_v they_o forget_v who_o or_o what_o manner_n of_o one_o god_n be_v they_o forget_v he_o in_o his_o property_n and_o attribute_n and_o such_o expression_n of_o he_o as_o whereby_o he_o have_v reveal_v and_o make_v himself_o know_v in_o his_o holiness_n and_o justice_n and_o power_n and_o omniscience_n and_o omnipresence_n and_o the_o like_a in_o these_o they_o do_v not_o remember_v he_o but_o plain_o forget_v he_o wicked_a man_n they_o frame_v to_o themselves_o such_o a_o god_n as_o be_v suitable_a to_o themselves_o and_o their_o own_o fancy_n and_o imagination_n as_o he_o tell_v that_o wicked_a man_n in_o the_o psalm_n 50.21_o thou_o think_v that_o i_o be_v altogether_o such_o a_o one_o as_o thyself_o as_o if_o that_o which_o please_v they_o it_o be_v please_v to_o he_o also_o three_o to_o the_o word_n of_o god_n they_o forget_v god_n that_o be_v they_o forget_v what_o god_n do_v command_v or_o commend_v unto_o they_o they_o forget_v his_o instruction_n and_o they_o forget_v his_o injunction_n and_o so_o in_o that_o respect_n they_o forget_v god_n himself_o for_o as_o much_o as_o he_o account_v himself_o interest_v and_o concern_v in_o such_o thing_n as_o these_o be_v as_o a_o prince_n in_o his_o law_n david_n resolve_v with_o himself_o that_o he_o will_v never_o forget_v god_n precept_n but_o this_o be_v that_o which_o such_o person_n as_o these_o do_v continual_o though_o they_o may_v seem_v to_o remember_v god_n notional_o yet_o they_o forget_v he_o practical_o and_o though_o they_o profess_v that_o they_o know_v he_o yet_o in_o work_n they_o deny_v he_o be_v abominable_a and_o disobedient_a apostle_n peter_n declare_v it_o of_o he_o in_o 2._o pet._n 2.7.8_o now_o this_o be_v that_o which_o we_o may_v here_o observe_v to_o be_v the_o temper_n of_o the_o prophet_n david_n in_o this_o present_a scripture_n and_o psalm_n which_o we_o have_v now_o before_o we_o the_o scope_n whereof_o be_v nothing_o else_o but_o to_o declare_v and_o protest_v against_o the_o sinfulness_n of_o wicked_a and_o profane_a athestical_a person_n this_o he_o do_v in_o sundry_a particular_n as_o we_o may_v observe_v n_o the_o precede_a verse_n and_o here_o now_o in_o this_o verse_n which_o i_o say_v to_o contemn_v god_n in_o his_o ordinance_n in_o his_o providence_n and_o in_o his_o servant_n first_o in_o his_o ordinance_n they_o contemn_v he_o and_o despise_v he_o there_o his_o word_n and_o his_o sacrament_n and_o his_o sabbath_n and_o such_o thing_n as_o these_o those_o that_o neglect_n and_o undervalue_v these_o they_o do_v no_o less_o than_o contemn_v god_n the_o word_n of_o god_n when_o man_n come_v not_o at_o it_o or_o profit_v not_o by_o it_o or_o yield_v not_o to_o it_o it_o come_v within_o the_o compass_n of_o this_o censure_n especial_o the_o last_o which_o i_o matter_n of_o fashion_n and_o custom_n and_o compliment_n and_o formality_n and_o not_o improve_n of_o it_o to_o those_o end_n for_o which_o it_o be_v first_o intend_v it_o be_v a_o contemn_v and_o a_o dispose_n of_o the_o great_a love_n and_o goodness_n of_o god_n in_o the_o justification_n of_o it_o and_o provide_v it_o for_o our_o sake_n and_o the_o lord_n supper_n when_o we_o come_v careless_o to_o it_o not_o discern_v ourselves_o not_o discern_v the_o lord_n body_n but_o eat_v and_o drink_v unworthy_o it_o be_v a_o contemn_v of_o such_o a_o divine_a ordinance_n as_o that_o psal_n 78.38_o but_o as_o in_o one_o kind_n he_o bring_v evil_a so_o in_o another_o kind_n he_o bring_v good_a with_o it_o his_o work_n be_v checker-work_n as_o we_o may_v so_o call_v it_o of_o black_a and_o white_a indeed_o this_o mixture_n be_v not_o always_o so_o take_v notice_n of_o by_o they_o as_o it_o be_v fit_v to_o be_v no_o if_o at_o any_o time_n we_o have_v any_o trouble_n or_o affliction_n upon_o we_o we_o do_v not_o for_o the_o most_o part_n observe_v the_o many_o mercy_n which_o we_o enjoy_v with_o they_o but_o yet_o they_o be_v never_o a_o whit_n the_o less_o for_o all_o that_o there_o be_v a_o mixture_n of_o bad_a and_o good_a together_o in_o regard_n of_o god_n dispensation_n and_o then_o three_o there_o be_v another_o thing_n also_o which_o be_v much_o observable_a particular_a it_o be_v both_o a_o indefinite_a word_n and_o a_o restrain_a it_o be_v indefinite_a in_o regard_n of_o the_o preacher_n but_o it_o be_v restrain_v in_o regard_n of_o the_o hearer_n for_o the_o minister_n they_o can_v always_o know_v who_o be_v guilty_a of_o these_o and_o these_o miscarriage_n therefore_o they_o speak_v at_o random_n and_o in_o generality_n they_o know_v not_o to_o who_o but_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n in_o man_n conscience_n bring_v it_o home_o to_o the_o particular_a person_n of_o those_o which_o be_v concern_v in_o it_o as_o st._n austin_n have_v it_o to_o repentanceâ—â—â—s_v it_o afford_v time_n and_o space_n for_o repentance_n for_o so_o it_o do_v if_o god_n shall_v deal_v strict_o with_o man_n in_o rigour_n of_o justice_n and_o cut_v they_o off_o present_o in_o their_o very_a sin_n they_o will_v then_o find_v no_o place_n for_o repentance_n but_o now_o his_o patience_n and_o long-suffering_a towards_o they_o be_v in_o this_o respect_n a_o advantage_n to_o they_o as_o a_o creditor_n that_o spare_v his_o debtor_n and_o do_v not_o instant_o fall_v upon_o he_o he_o give_v he_o time_n to_o pay_v his_o debt_n which_o otherwise_o he_o can_v not_o do_v thus_o do_v god_n with_o the_o son_n of_o man_n by_o his_o indulgence_n and_o forbearance_n of_o they_o he_o do_v hereby_o give_v they_o respite_n for_o this_o that_o they_o may_v by_o gracious_a and_o ingenuous_a impression_n fasten_v upon_o the_o mind_n of_o man_n otherwise_o it_o do_v no_o good_a at_o all_o at_o least_o in_o any_o save_a way_n the_o goodness_n of_o god_n that_o do_v we_o good_a in_o a_o way_n of_o repentance_n it_o be_v not_o his_o goodness_n without_o we_o but_o his_o goodness_n rather_o within_o we_o by_o the_o change_n of_o our_o inward_a man_n and_o the_o infuse_v of_o gracious_a principle_n into_o we_o and_o thus_o far_o indeed_o he_o do_v conduct_v we_o and_o lead_v we_o hereunto_o there_o be_v some_o which_o be_v of_o opinion_n as_o if_o a_o disciplinary_a repentance_n couâ—â—sting_v especial_o in_o a_o external_a cessation_n from_o those_o grievous_a sin_n before_o mention_v and_o of_o the_o change_n of_o vicious_a act_n and_o custom_n into_o those_o which_o be_v moral_o honest_a and_o laudable_a second_o he_o do_v not_o affirm_v that_o this_o goodness_n and_o mercy_n of_o god_n have_v any_o suitableness_n or_o congruity_n hereunto_o in_o a_o connexion_n of_o cause_n and_o dependence_n of_o one_o thing_n upon_o another_o neither_o three_o which_o be_v also_o suppose_v do_v he_o say_v that_o god_n do_v absolute_o intend_v the_o actual_a repentance_n of_o all_o such_o person_n to_o who_o this_o mercy_n be_v show_v but_o this_o be_v that_o which_o he_o do_v propound_v and_o exhibit_v to_o we_o that_o god_n do_v hereby_o as_o it_o be_v lead_v man_n by_o the_o hand_n and_o entice_v they_o and_o invite_v they_o and_o draw_v they_o on_o to_o the_o do_v it_o more_o than_o they_o do_v and_o so_o objective_o lead_v they_o to_o repentance_n and_o this_o be_v enough_o to_o convince_v man_n and_o to_o leave_v they_o inexcusable_a while_o they_o pull_v themselves_o out_o of_o god_n hand_n offer_v to_o lead_v they_o and_o refuse_v to_o be_v better_o by_o he_o and_o by_o all_o his_o favour_n and_o mercy_n towards_o they_o which_o he_o follow_v they_o and_o tend_v they_o withal_o to_o this_o i_o may_v also_o add_v by_o way_n of_o further_a illustration_n how_o god_n lead_v man_n to_o repentance_n exemplariter_fw-la by_o way_n of_o pattern_n and_o example_n and_o that_o also_o in_o this_o his_o goodness_n and_o patience_n while_o himself_o seem_v to_o repent_v of_o the_o evil_n which_o he_o intend_v to_o bring_v upon_o they_o as_o we_o find_v that_o phrase_n often_o in_o scripture_n this_o be_v a_o special_a second_o general_n viz._n the_o truth_n assert_v that_o the_o goodness_n of_o god_n lead_v thou_o to_o repentance_n the_o second_o be_v the_o truth_n question_v in_o those_o word_n not_o know_v that_o which_o word_n may_v be_v take_v either_o as_o a_o part_n of_o the_o expostulation_n as_o join_v with_o the_o forego_n word_n despise_v thou_o etc._n etc._n and_o do_v thou_o not_o know_v or_o else_o as_o the_o assignation_n of_o a_o ground_n and_o reason_n of_o that_o contempt_n forasmuch_o as_o thou_o do_v not_o know_v etc._n etc._n take_v they_o which_o way_n you_o will_v and_o if_o you_o please_v both_o way_n together_o and_o so_o this_o expression_n not_o know_v it_o do_v imply_v three_o thing_n in_o it_o first_o simple_a ignorance_n not_o know_v i.e._n not_o apprehend_v second_o interpretative_a ignorance_n not_o know_v i.e._n not_o consider_v three_o affect_v ignorance_n not_o know_v i.e._n not_o willing_a to_o know_v first_o simple_z ignorance_n not_o know_v i.e._n not_o apprehend_v this_o be_v that_o which_o worldly_a man_n be_v oftentimes_o much_o encompass_v withal_o they_o be_v ignorant_a of_o the_o scope_n and_o end_n and_o intent_n of_o god_n providence_n towards_o they_o they_o do_v not_o know_v what_o he_o mean_v either_o in_o his_o chastisement_n or_o his_o forbearance_n of_o correction_n but_o have_v oftentimes_o sinister_a conceit_n and_o apprehension_n in_o this_o particular_a as_o think_v that_o to_o be_v a_o favour_v of_o sin_n in_o they_o which_o be_v rather_o the_o contrary_a and_o think_v that_o to_o be_v a_o allowance_n of_o wickedness_n which_o be_v rather_o a_o motive_n a_o incitement_n to_o goodness_n and_o so_o repentance_n as_o it_o be_v here_o express_v evil_a man_n understand_v not_o judgement_n but_o they_o which_o seek_v the_o lord_n under_v and_o all_o thing_n both_o in_o judgement_n and_o mercy_n itself_o as_o be_v there_o imply_v prov._n 28.5_o now_o this_o ignorance_n as_o be_v here_o also_o intimate_v be_v a_o cause_n and_o ground_n of_o this_o miscarriage_n therefore_o man_n make_v no_o better_a use_n of_o all_o his_o gracious_a deal_n with_o they_o because_o they_o know_v not_o nor_o do_v not_o understand_v the_o drift_n and_o meaning_n of_o they_o nor_o the_o errand_n which_o they_o carry_v with_o they_o which_o it_o be_v a_o matter_n of_o concernment_n to_o know_v christian_n they_o shall_v labour_v to_o be_v well_o acquaint_v with_o the_o providence_n of_o god_n to_o spell_v out_o the_o meaning_n of_o they_o and_o to_o learn_v that_o proper_a lesson_n which_o he_o will_v teach_v they_o by_o they_o second_o interpretative_a ignorance_n not_o know_v i.e._n not_o consider_v that_o which_o a_o man_n do_v not_o attend_v unto_o it_o be_v in_o effect_n as_o if_o he_o do_v not_o know_v and_o so_o it_o be_v here_o and_o that_o as_o a_o ground_n and_o occasion_n of_o this_o distemper_n and_o miscarriage_n of_o despise_v of_o the_o goodness_n of_o god_n when_o man_n do_v not_o thorough_o weigh_v and_o consider_v what_o this_o goodness_n of_o god_n tend_v to_o they_o be_v from_o hence_o apt_a to_o despise_v it_o and_o indeed_o all_o miscarriage_n be_v upon_o the_o point_n found_v hereupon_o man_n will_v be_v a_o great_a deal_n more_o innocent_a if_o they_o be_v but_o more_o advise_v if_o they_o do_v but_o ponder_v and_o consider_v and_o perpend_v thing_n more_o than_o they_o do_v which_o indeed_o they_o do_v not_o three_o affect_v ignorance_n not_o know_v i.e._n not_o willing_a o_o know_v because_o man_n have_v no_o mind_n o_o repent_v therefore_o they_o by_o he_o first_o for_o our_o own_o particular_a person_n it_o concern_v we_o to_o be_v sensible_a of_o it_o here_o whosoever_o thou_o be_v that_o god_n do_v bless_v more_o than_o ordinary_a with_o doom_n and_o sentence_n which_o be_v pass_v upon_o all_o such_o person_n as_o we_o have_v hitherto_o describe_v yet_o not_o only_o upon_o person_n consider_v distinct_o but_o upon_o whole_a nation_n consider_v joint_o that_o be_v wicked_a and_o forgetful_a of_o god_n they_o shall_v be_v turn_v into_o hell_n that_o be_v both_o for_o ever_o be_v deprive_v of_o god_n glorious_a and_o beatifical_a
