first_o who_o they_o be_v that_o cast_a dishonour_n on_o this_o great_a work_n of_o god_n and_o second_o show_v the_o greatness_n of_o the_o sin_n what_o a_o dangerous_a thing_n it_o be_v to_o sin_n against_o this_o great_a work_n of_o god_n in_o pardon_v sin_n 1._o first_o they_o sin_n against_o this_o great_a work_n of_o god_n in_o pardon_v sin_n that_o be_v altogether_o careless_a who_o little_a or_o nothing_o mind_n it_o or_o scarce_o spend_v any_o time_n about_o it_o there_o be_v a_o generation_n of_o man_n and_o woman_n in_o the_o world_n that_o have_v sin_n and_o guilt_n enough_o upon_o their_o spirit_n yet_o they_o scarce_o ever_o call_v to_o mind_n or_o question_v what_o be_v the_o term_n between_o god_n and_o their_o own_o soul_n how_o thing_n stand_v between_o god_n and_o thou_o have_v upon_o thy_o spirit_n what_o have_v divine_a justice_n to_o charge_v thou_o withal_o conscience_n speak_v free_o and_o full_o what_o be_v there_o in_o heaven_n against_o i_o be_v there_o and_o for_o your_o estate_n how_o to_o get_v and_o increase_v in_o the_o world_n but_o to_o make_v up_o the_o record_n between_o god_n and_o your_o soul_n to_o get_v they_o discharge_v and_o the_o record_n of_o heaven_n cancel_v that_o be_v against_o you_o o_o how_o seldom_o do_v these_o thing_n take_v up_o your_o thought_n know_v you_o that_o be_v of_o such_o careless_a spirit_n about_o this_o great_a matter_n of_o pardon_n of_o sin_n that_o it_o be_v a_o great_a aggravation_n of_o your_o sin_n that_o you_o be_v so_o careless_a about_o that_o great_a work_n of_o god_n in_o pardon_v sin_n you_o be_v careless_a and_o spend_v but_o a_o few_o thought_n about_o that_o that_o have_v as_o i_o may_v so_o speak_v with_o holy_a reverence_n take_v up_o the_o heart_n of_o the_o infinite_a god_n from_o all_o eternity_n certain_o there_o be_v not_o any_o in_o the_o world_n not_o any_o of_o the_o work_n of_o god_n towards_o his_o creature_n have_v take_v up_o the_o thought_n and_o heart_n of_o god_n so_o much_o as_o this_o one_o work_n of_o the_o pardon_n of_o sin_n &_o yet_o your_o thought_n be_v not_o take_v up_o with_o it_o you_o little_a mind_n it_o certain_o there_o be_v a_o great_a disproportion_n between_o your_o thought_n and_o god_n whereas_o those_o that_o be_v godly_a shall_v labour_v to_o work_v as_o god_n work_v and_o those_o thing_n that_o have_v take_v up_o the_o heart_n of_o god_n shall_v take_v up_o their_o heart_n whereas_o those_o thing_n that_o be_v even_o unworthy_a of_o a_o immortal_a soul_n take_v up_o your_o thought_n and_o those_o object_n that_o take_v up_o the_o thought_n &_o heart_n of_o god_n about_o pardon_v sin_n your_o own_o conscience_n can_v tell_v you_o be_v very_o little_a in_o your_o thought_n and_o heart_n certain_o my_o brethren_n be_v the_o thought_n of_o man_n and_o woman_n take_v up_o about_o this_o serious_a and_o great_a business_n of_o get_v pardon_n of_o their_o sin_n it_o will_v prevent_v and_o cure_v they_o of_o thousand_o of_o other_o vain_a slight_a foolish_a and_o wicked_a thought_n there_o be_v i_o suppose_v many_o of_o you_o begin_v to_o be_v sensible_a of_o sin_n and_o of_o the_o base_a wander_a this_o will_v be_v a_o great_a help_n if_o you_o will_v get_v your_o thought_n possess_v with_o serious_a subject_n it_o will_v have_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o weight_n in_o it_o to_o help_v you_o against_o those_o light_n and_o vain_a thing_n your_o thought_n work_v about_o now_o of_o all_o subject_n in_o the_o world_n this_o be_v the_o most_o serious_a about_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n how_o his_o infinite_a wisdom_n have_v wrought_v to_o reconcile_v himself_o to_o your_o soul_n in_o the_o bring_n about_o the_o pardon_n of_o sin_n and_o make_v peace_n between_o himself_o and_o the_o child_n of_o man_n now_o if_o you_o will_v take_v up_o your_o thought_n about_o the_o great_a business_n of_o get_v pardon_n of_o your_o sin_n it_o will_v take_v off_o your_o thought_n from_o other_o thing_n suppose_v a_o man_n have_v a_o vain_a slight_a wander_a foolish_a heart_n yet_o if_o he_o be_v condemn_v to_o die_v some_o dreadful_a torment_a death_n his_o thought_n will_v quick_o be_v take_v off_o from_o other_o thing_n and_o take_v up_o about_o use_v mean_n if_o there_o be_v any_o possibility_n to_o deliver_v himself_o from_o death_n jerom_n in_o one_o of_o his_o epistle_n have_v this_o relation_n of_o one_o that_o be_v trouble_v with_o vile_a thought_n and_o he_o that_o he_o complain_v unto_o have_v this_o device_n i_o name_v it_o not_o to_o approve_v it_o but_o he_o have_v this_o device_n he_o bring_v the_o man_n to_o have_v a_o charge_n of_o a_o crime_n lay_v against_o he_o and_o cause_v he_o to_o be_v bring_v before_o a_o judge_n and_o put_v into_o prison_n and_o afterward_o he_o come_v to_o he_o and_o ask_v he_o how_o be_v it_o now_o with_o you_o do_v your_o vain_a thought_n still_o abide_v with_o you_o as_o they_o be_v wont_a to_o do_v he_o give_v he_o name_n of_o god_n in_o vain_a and_o do_v not_o sanctify_v he_o in_o this_o great_a work_n of_o he_o and_o know_v this_o you_o that_o spend_v
pardon_v sin_n yet_o it_o do_v not_o work_v thus_o viz._n you_o have_v sin_v and_o my_o law_n require_v such_o and_o such_o obedience_n to_o be_v perform_v on_o such_o term_n or_o else_o you_o must_v perish_v but_o i_o through_o my_o mercy_n will_v remit_v something_o of_o the_o rigour_n and_o strictness_n of_o the_o law_n and_o most_o people_n confess_v that_o by_o the_o strictness_n of_o the_o to_o have_v pardon_n and_o deal_v with_o god_n after_o the_o manner_n of_o man_n you_o think_v the_o cry_n to_o god_n for_o mercy_n will_v abate_v something_o of_o the_o strictness_n and_o severity_n of_o the_o law_n but_o you_o mistake_v in_o take_v this_o way_n to_o get_v peace_n and_o reconciliation_n with_o god_n to_o look_v upon_o god_n mercy_n to_o lie_v in_o this_o to_o remit_v something_o of_o the_o strictness_n and_o severity_n of_o the_o law_n no_o but_o the_o work_n of_o god_n mercy_n lie_v in_o this_o to_o find_v out_o a_o surety_n for_o you_o and_o to_o transact_v the_o debt_n thought_n of_o sin_n but_o because_o they_o judge_v of_o god_n by_o themselves_o that_o he_o abhor_v sin_n no_o otherwise_o than_o man_n do_v and_o so_o hope_v they_o may_v do_v well_o enough_o measure_v the_o infinite_a hatred_n that_o god_n have_v to_o sin_n by_o their_o own_o so_o on_o the_o other_o side_n the_o sinner_n that_o be_v convince_v of_o the_o dreadful_a evil_n of_o sin_n be_v ready_a to_o despair_v why_o because_o he_o judge_n of_o god_n by_o himself_o as_o if_o the_o mercy_n of_o god_n be_v no_o other_o than_o the_o mercy_n of_o man_n not_o consider_v the_o mercy_n of_o he_o may_v be_v change_v and_o thus_o the_o pardon_n of_o god_n differ_v from_o all_o other_o pardon_n a_o prince_n pardon_v a_o malefactor_n or_o a_o father_n a_o child_n but_o upon_o what_o term_n a_o prince_n expect_v his_o subject_n shall_v be_v change_v as_o far_o as_o he_o can_v discern_v and_o a_o father_n though_o never_o so_o tender_a will_v not_o pardon_v a_o child_n unless_o he_o come_v in_o and_o manifest_a a_o change_n of_o his_o disobedient_a spirit_n and_o then_o he_o pardon_v god_n do_v not_o pardon_v because_o we_o be_v change_v but_o that_o we_o may_v be_v change_v till_o a_o malefactor_n heart_n be_v change_v and_o he_o become_v a_o loyal_a subject_n and_o then_o pardon_v he_o god_n be_v not_o so_o in_o justify_v soul_n he_o justify_v the_o ungodly_a one_o that_o be_v ungodly_a come_n to_o he_o he_o justify_v this_o be_v a_o mighty_a argument_n i_o name_v it_o for_o this_o end_n because_o i_o will_v teach_v people_n that_o notwithstanding_o any_o sin_n or_o guilt_n that_o lie_v upon_o their_o spirit_n yet_o they_o have_v a_o liberty_n to_o come_v in_o and_o lie_v hold_v upon_o christ_n for_o justification_n do_v not_o say_v i_o be_o ungodly_a i_o be_o a_o great_a sinner_n and_o have_v a_o vile_a heart_n and_o i_o find_v not_o my_o nature_n change_v and_o therefore_o how_o dare_v i_o lie_v hold_v upon_o god_n grace_n for_o mercy_n and_o pardon_v yea_o thou_o may_v because_o god_n justify_v the_o ungodly_a though_o thy_o nature_n be_v not_o change_v and_o sanctify_a as_o thou_o say_v take_v it_o thus_o thou_o must_v lay_v hold_v of_o persuasion_n that_o christ_n die_v for_o they_o or_o as_o many_o man_n think_v thus_o well_o god_n be_v merciful_a and_o he_o will_v pardon_v i_o christ_n have_v die_v there_o may_v be_v presumption_n in_o lay_v hold_n on_o christ_n but_o now_o as_o justification_n be_v a_o great_a mystery_n so_o be_v faith_n and_o faith_n be_v a_o mighty_a work_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n in_o the_o soul_n that_o cause_v the_o soul_n to_o roll_n and_o cast_v itself_o on_o the_o free_a grace_n of_o god_n in_o christ_n and_o venture_v itself_o and_o all_o its_o hope_n for_o good_a and_o happiness_n on_o but_o ungodliness_n in_o he_o appear_v yet_o such_o a_o one_o may_v and_o have_v right_a to_o come_v unto_o god_n for_o pardon_n for_o god_n justify_v the_o ungodly_a rom._n 5.6_o christ_n die_v for_o and_o if_o one_o have_v offend_v you_o you_o pardon_v the_o offender_n but_o you_o that_o be_v offend_v do_v not_o purchase_v a_o pardon_n for_o the_o offender_n possible_a some_o friend_n may_v come_v and_o purchase_v a_o pardon_n at_o the_o king_n hand_n for_o a_o offender_n but_o the_o king_n himself_o do_v not_o purchase_v it_o yet_o thus_o it_o be_v with_o god_n god_n do_v not_o pardon_v any_o one_o sin_n but_o it_o cost_v god_n himself_o dear_a before_o he_o get_v it_o therefore_o it_o be_v not_o such_o a_o slight_a thing_n to_o be_v pardon_v you_o must_v not_o think_v to_o go_v to_o must_v needs_o be_v a_o great_a take_v the_o name_n of_o god_n in_o vain_a for_o any_o man_n or_o woman_n to_o have_v slight_a thought_n of_o such_o a_o mercy_n as_o pardon_v of_o sin_n be_v that_o come_v through_o so_o many_o difficulty_n second_o this_o may_v come_v with_o power_n upon_o our_o heart_n if_o god_n mercy_n pass_v through_o so_o many_o difficulty_n for_o the_o pardon_n of_o thy_o than_o ever_o thou_o be_v before_o well_o thou_o be_v seek_v for_o pardon_n and_o thou_o camplaine_v thou_o have_v wait_v long_o for_o pardon_n it_o may_v be_v a_o quarter_n or_o half_o a_o year_n or_o it_o may_v be_v twelve_o month_n and_o thou_o have_v get_v little_a assurance_n of_o pardon_n and_o thou_o find_v it_o much_o more_o difficult_a than_o thou_o think_v it_o will_v be_v to_o be_v preach_v of_o because_o we_o find_v so_o much_o sweetness_n in_o it_o and_o for_o which_o our_o soul_n shall_v expatiate_v themselves_o in_o glorify_v god_n to_o all_o eternity_n but_o we_o be_v withal_o jealous_a of_o your_o dishonour_n of_o god_n in_o this_o mercy_n and_o therefore_o it_o be_v that_o we_o labour_v so_o with_o you_o after_o the_o lay_v open_a of_o this_o mercy_n that_o you_o may_v not_o abuse_v it_o for_o certain_o my_o brethren_n there_o be_v nothing_o in_o the_o world_n god_n take_v to_o heart_n more_o than_o the_o dishonour_n that_o be_v do_v to_o his_o pardon_v those_o man_n seek_v pardon_n of_o sin_n when_o sin_n be_v leave_v they_o or_o they_o must_v leave_v sin_n whether_o they_o will_v or_o no_o when_o you_o have_v serve_v your_o own_o turn_n of_o sin_n after_o you_o have_v have_v as_o much_o suppose_a pleasure_n as_o you_o can_v than_o you_o think_v to_o be_v deliver_v from_o the_o guilt_n and_o punishment_n of_o sin_n what_o be_v there_o but_o a_o mere_a selfish_a spirit_n in_o seek_v god_n now_o and_o god_n see_v it_o so_o it_o be_v not_o seek_v after_o pardon_n of_o sin_n that_o you_o may_v honour_n god_n in_o his_o infinite_a grace_n for_o than_o you_o will_v seek_v after_o it_o now_o and_o the_o honour_n of_o god_n will_v be_v dear_a to_o you_o now_o but_o you_o seek_v it_o at_o such_o a_o time_n mere_o out_o of_o respect_n to_o yourselves_o this_o be_v a_o great_a dishonour_n to_o god_n it_o be_v the_o first_o bear_v of_o god_n glory_n to_o pardon_v sin_n and_o for_o god_n to_o see_v man_n and_o woman_n have_v no_o high_a end_n in_o seek_v pardon_v grace_n but_o mere_o to_o save_v their_o own_o skin_n how_o may_v god_n look_v upon_o they_o with_o disdain_n what_o shall_v i_o magnify_v the_o riches_n of_o my_o grace_n christ_n and_o the_o close_n with_o it_o for_o justification_n it_o be_v the_o high_a most_o exquisite_a most_o glorious_a and_o most_o admirable_a work_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o man_n that_o ever_o be_v in_o the_o world_n and_o it_o require_v the_o great_a intenseness_n and_o strength_n of_o a_o man_n spirit_n that_o ever_o any_o work_n do_v now_o then_o to_o put_v this_o off_o till_o such_o a_o time_n as_o a_o man_n strength_n be_v go_v and_o he_o through_o disease_n unfit_a for_o any_o thing_n and_o when_o as_o all_o the_o strength_n he_o have_v will_v be_v little_a enough_o to_o help_v he_o to_o bear_v his_o pain_n this_o must_v needs_o be_v the_o worst_a time_n you_o be_v mistake_v if_o you_o think_v the_o apply_v of_o god_n mercy_n in_o christ_n be_v but_o in_o say_v lord_n have_v mercy_n upon_o i_o no_o it_o be_v god_n put_v the_o heart_n of_o man_n to_o do_v the_o most_o glorious_a work_n that_o have_v the_o great_a operation_n in_o it_o that_o ever_o he_o do_v i_o remember_v it_o relate_v of_o one_o that_o live_v wicked_o and_o divers_a seek_v to_o reclaim_v he_o say_v he_o come_v when_o i_o be_o upon_o my_o sick_a bed_n that_o be_v time_n enough_o and_o afterward_o he_o be_v sick_a be_v put_v in_o mind_n of_o it_o you_o say_v you_o will_v do_v it_o then_o but_o then_o he_o swear_v a_o great_a oath_n say_v what_o be_v this_o a_o time_n to_o repent_v in_o because_o he_o then_o feel_v so_o much_o trouble_v and_o anguish_n that_o take_v up_o his_o thought_n that_o he_o be_v stir_v with_o indignation_n to_o be_v put_v upon_o repent_v then_o in_o a_o time_n when_o he_o feel_v so_o much_o dolour_n of_o spirit_n by_o the_o pain_n that_o be_v upon_o he_o be_v this_o a_o time_n to_o repent_v in_o if_o that_o be_v not_o then_o do_v it_o betimes_o 4._o it_o be_v the_o worst_a time_n because_o god_n shall_v lose_v a_o great_a part_n of_o his_o end_n in_o pardon_v sin_n for_o when_o god_n pardon_v sin_n it_o be_v to_o this_o end_n that_o his_o poor_a creature_n day_n of_o our_o life_n and_o he_o know_v there_o be_v no_o such_o way_n to_o engage_v the_o heart_n of_o man_n to_o serve_v he_o as_o pardon_v grace_n for_o when_o once_o a_o soul_n see_v itself_o deliver_v from_o those_o enemy_n of_o sin_n and_o of_o the_o law_n that_o will_v destroy_v he_o his_o heart_n will_v be_v mighty_o set_v to_o honour_n god_n and_o serve_v he_o in_o holiness_n and_o righteousness_n all_o his_o day_n and_o therefore_o to_o seek_v for_o pardon_v when_o thou_o can_v do_v god_n no_o more_o service_n in_o this_o world_n must_v needs_o be_v the_o worst_a time_n for_o how_o know_v thou_o that_o he_o will_v accept_v thou_o then_o i_o beseech_v you_o observe_v one_o text_n of_o scripture_n that_o be_v abuse_v by_o many_o people_n for_o i_o suppose_v that_o i_o be_o mistake_v that_o be_v the_o main_a prop_n of_o many_o carnal_a heart_n as_o it_o be_v read_v in_o some_o book_n at_o what_o time_n soever_o a_o sinner_n repent_v etc._n etc._n i_o know_v no_o such_o evidence_n of_o the_o pardon_n of_o sin_n but_o give_v way_n to_o temptation_n commit_v a_o sin_n and_o there_o he_o get_v a_o blot_n and_o then_o the_o next_o temptation_n come_v possible_o to_o worldly_a mindedness_n passion_n unbelief_n slightness_n of_o spirit_n vanity_n sensuality_n and_o abuse_v of_o the_o creature_n by_o often_o yield_v to_o these_o he_o get_v more_o and_o renew_a blot_n so_o that_o if_o his_o evidence_n be_v look_v into_o they_o will_v be_v find_v so_o full_a of_o blot_n that_o no_o marvel_n in_o a_o time_n of_o temptation_n they_o can_v read_v they_o possible_o some_o that_o be_v skilful_a in_o the_o way_n of_o god_n and_o the_o nature_n of_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n may_v pick_v out_o somewhat_o of_o the_o meaning_n of_o they_o but_o thou_o have_v fall_v so_o sou_o from_o god_n that_o thy_o evidence_n be_v so_o blot_v and_o blur_v that_o in_o thy_o own_o apprehension_n thou_o can_v see_v nothing_o but_o that_o thy_o condition_n be_v as_o dangerous_a as_o ever_o it_o be_v and_o as_o uncomfortable_a thy_o evidence_n be_v so_o blot_v that_o thou_o can_v not_o read_v they_o thyself_o and_o so_o have_v no_o comfort_n by_o they_o and_o it_o be_v to_o thou_o as_o if_o thou_o have_v none_o at_o all_o this_o be_v the_o duty_n and_o will_v be_v the_o comfort_n of_o every_o christian_a that_o when_o they_o have_v get_v their_o evidence_n that_o they_o will_v keep_v they_o so_o clear_a that_o they_o may_v read_v they_o every_o morning_n and_o run_v and_o read_v they_o and_o not_o stand_v poore_v and_o beat_v their_o brain_n and_o
