to_o another_o verse_n 16._o thing_n discommendable_a be_v 1._o that_o though_o they_o come_v and_o see_v what_o be_v do_v and_o that_o the_o man_n be_v dispossess_v and_o perfect_o cure_v yet_o prayer_n and_o other_o good_a mean_n now_o this_o kind_n of_o hardness_n may_v be_v and_o be_v find_v more_o or_o less_o in_o the_o best_a saint_n and_o child_n of_o god_n it_o be_v in_o the_o disciple_n of_o christ_n mark_v 6._o 52._o they_o consider_v not_o the_o miracle_n of_o the_o loaf_n for_o their_o heart_n be_v harden_v and_o mark_v 16._o 14._o he_o upbraid_v the_o eleven_o with_o sin_n now_o that_o it_o be_v so_o may_v appear_v by_o these_o reason_n 1._o it_o keep_v out_o repentance_n which_o be_v the_o remedy_n against_o sin_n for_o so_o long_o as_o the_o heart_n be_v harden_v in_o sin_n it_o can_v repent_v rom._n 2._o 5._o after_o thy_o hardness_n and_o impenitent_a heart_n treasure_a up_o wrath_n etc._n etc._n 2._o thiâ—_n be_v such_o a_o sin_n with_o which_o that_o this_o hardness_n of_o heart_n lay_v they_o open_a to_o most_o fearful_a judgement_n of_o god_n in_o this_o life_n and_o after_o this_o life_n if_o they_o live_v and_o die_v in_o it_o this_o be_v for_o the_o terror_n of_o all_o hard-hearted_a sinner_n let_v such_o therefore_o consider_v it_o and_o tremble_v at_o it_o and_o that_o they_o may_v so_o do_v let_v they_o consider_v of_o some_o mark_n whereby_o they_o may_v know_v the_o hardness_n of_o their_o own_o heart_n 1._o if_o it_o be_v so_o with_o they_o that_o they_o be_v not_o move_v to_o repentance_n and_o true_a humiliation_n and_o exhortation_n one_o to_o another_o if_o we_o see_v other_o fall_v into_o any_o sin_n admonish_v and_o tell_v they_o of_o it_o in_o love_a manner_n and_o exhort_v they_o to_o repent_v of_o it_o and_o if_o other_o in_o like_a case_n admonish_v and_o exhort_v we_o let_v we_o hearken_v to_o it_o this_o be_v one_o excellent_a mean_n to_o keep_v we_o from_o be_v harden_v in_o sin_n hebr._n 3._o custom_n in_o sin_n for_o as_o a_o way_n or_o path_n the_o more_o it_o be_v tread_v and_o trample_v upon_o the_o hard_a it_o wax_v so_o the_o more_o any_o do_v inure_v themselves_o to_o the_o practice_n of_o any_o sin_n as_o swear_v lie_a drunkenness_n uncleanness_n etc._n etc._n the_o hard_a their_o heart_n will_v grow_v it_o be_v report_v concern_v mithridates_n that_o through_o the_o custom_n of_o drink_v poison_n he_o make_v it_o so_o familiar_a to_o he_o that_o he_o drink_v it_o without_o danger_n so_o the_o wicked_a by_o custom_n in_o swear_v uncleanness_n etc._n etc._n make_v these_o sin_n so_o familiar_a to_o they_o that_o they_o can_v swallow_v they_o without_o all_o remorse_n of_o conscience_n beware_v then_o of_o this_o custom_n in_o any_o sin_n lest_o it_o harden_v thy_o heart_n 2._o take_v heed_n of_o sin_v against_o knowledge_n and_o against_o the_o light_n of_o conscience_n yea_o though_o it_o be_v but_o of_o a_o natural_a conscience_n for_o all_o such_o sin_n against_o knowledge_n do_v exceed_o harden_v the_o heart_n this_o we_o see_v in_o david_n who_o sin_v against_o his_o conscience_n by_o adultery_n and_o murder_n his_o heart_n be_v so_o harden_v thereby_o that_o it_o be_v almost_o a_o year_n before_o he_o do_v thorough_o repent_v and_o recover_v himself_o from_o that_o dangerous_a fall_n 3._o last_o take_v heed_n of_o negligence_n and_o coldness_n in_o religious_a exercise_n of_o prayer_n hear_v read_v etc._n etc._n for_o if_o either_o we_o begin_v to_o omit_v or_o else_o slight_o to_o perform_v these_o duty_n by_o which_o our_o heart_n shall_v be_v daily_o soften_v and_o keep_v tender_a then_o by_o little_a and_o little_o we_o shall_v become_v dangerous_o harden_v so_o much_o of_o the_o first_o thing_n in_o this_o verse_n namely_o the_o carriage_n of_o our_o saviour_n christ_n towards_o the_o scribe_n and_o pharisee_n now_o follow_v the_o second_o and_o three_o thing_n namely_o his_o behaviour_n towards_o the_o man_n which_o have_v the_o wither_a hand_n bid_v he_o to_o stretch_v out_o his_o hand_n together_o with_o the_o event_n which_o follow_v he_o stretch_v it_o out_o and_o it_o be_v make_v whole_a as_o the_o other_o i_o shall_v speak_v very_o brief_o of_o both_o these_o together_o stretch_v forth_o etc._n etc._n he_o do_v not_o touch_v he_o as_o he_o do_v some_o other_o which_o he_o cure_v at_o other_o etc._n not_o for_o those_o of_o their_o charge_n and_o of_o their_o own_o family_n as_o husband_n wife_n child_n servant_n no_o care_n so_o much_o as_o to_o send_v to_o the_o physician_n for_o they_o till_o they_o be_v pass_v recovery_n more_o merciful_a they_o be_v to_o their_o beast_n if_o it_o be_v sick_a than_o to_o their_o sick_a child_n servant_n etc._n etc._n how_o dwell_v the_o love_n of_o god_n in_o such_o as_o show_v so_o little_a love_n and_o mercy_n to_o other_o how_o shall_v they_o look_v to_o find_v mercy_n with_o god_n and_o with_o man_n in_o their_o own_o misery_n when_o they_o of_o the_o heart_n and_o we_o must_v deal_v thorough_o in_o search_v out_o the_o corruption_n of_o our_o heart_n remember_v how_o deceitful_a they_o be_v and_o how_o hard_o it_o be_v to_o know_v they_o many_o do_v not_o feel_v or_o complain_v of_o the_o filthiness_n and_o corruption_n of_o their_o heart_n because_o they_o never_o yet_o ransack_v their_o heart_n by_o the_o law_n of_o god_n or_o inner_a man_n which_o may_v be_v distinguish_v in_o regard_n of_o the_o object_n of_o they_o into_o two_o sort_n 1._o such_o as_o be_v most_o direct_o against_o god_n condemn_v in_o the_o first_o table_n of_o the_o moral_a law_n as_o motion_n of_o atheism_n infidelity_n distrust_v of_o god_n mercy_n blasphemous_a thought_n etc._n etc._n 2._o such_o as_o be_v more_o direct_o against_o our_o understand_v further_n these_o corrupt_a motion_n of_o the_o heart_n may_v be_v distinguish_v in_o regard_n of_o the_o nature_n or_o degree_n of_o they_o into_o two_o sort_n 1._o such_o as_o be_v join_v with_o actual_a consent_n of_o heart_n and_o will_n yield_v unto_o they_o see_v mat._n 5._o 28._o 2._o such_o as_o arise_v in_o the_o heart_n and_o do_v spring_n from_o our_o corrupt_a nature_n the_o next_o place_n we_o be_v to_o speak_v of_o their_o suit_n or_o petition_v make_v unto_o christ_n which_o be_v that_o he_o will_v show_v a_o sign_n from_o heaven_n which_o be_v amplify_v by_o the_o manner_n of_o their_o seek_n or_o by_o the_o end_n of_o their_o seek_v such_o a_o sign_n viz._n to_o tempt_v he_o a_o sign_n from_o heaven_n the_o word_n sign_n do_v proper_o imply_v some_o outward_a sensible_a thing_n by_o which_o some_o other_o thing_n be_v signify_v represent_v or_o bring_v to_o remembrance_n but_o in_o scripture_n it_o be_v sometime_o use_v to_o signify_v a_o extraordinary_a sign_n or_o miracle_n proper_o so_o call_v because_o by_o it_o the_o divine_a power_n of_o god_n and_o his_o divine_a attribute_n as_o wisdom_n justice_n mercy_n etc._n etc._n be_v be_v of_o good_a comfort_n so_o far_o forth_o as_o we_o suffer_v they_o in_o the_o way_n of_o well-doing_n this_o be_v a_o good_a sign_n that_o we_o be_v in_o the_o right_a way_n to_o eternal_a life_n which_o be_v a_o straight_a and_o narrow_a way_n and_o full_a of_o trouble_n it_o be_v not_o a_o easy_a or_o pleasant_a way_n but_o tedious_a and_o troublesome_a to_o walk_v in_o away_o stop_v with_o especial_o labour_v by_o faith_n to_o cast_v thyself_o upon_o christ_n and_o to_o rely_v on_o he_o for_o pardon_n of_o sin_n etc._n etc._n observe_v 3_o observe_v 3._o in_o that_o our_o saviour_n join_v these_o two_o property_n together_o in_o his_o disciple_n 1._o that_o they_o be_v little_a one_o in_o humility_n 2._o that_o they_o be_v believer_n in_o he_o hence_o we_o may_v gather_v that_o true_a faith_n and_o true_a humility_n go_v always_o together_o in_o such_o as_o be_v good_a christian_n they_o be_v inseparable_o join_v as_o the_o cause_n and_o the_o effect_n in_o every_o true_a christian_a faith_n be_v the_o cause_n and_o humility_n the_o effect_n and_o such_o a_o effect_n as_o be_v never_o sever_v from_o the_o cause_n see_v this_o in_o the_o publican_n luke_n 18._o he_o be_v both_o a_o true_a believer_n as_o appear_v in_o that_o he_o go_v away_o justify_v which_o can_v not_o be_v without_o faith_n and_o withal_o he_o be_v very_o humble_a in_o himself_o as_o appear_v
