wherefore_o we_o may_v well_o sing_v with_o david_n remember_v etc_n etc_n here_o i_o purpose_v simple_o to_o follow_v the_o sense_n and_o meaning_n of_o the_o letter_n declare_v how_o this_o psalm_n be_v use_v and_o apply_v of_o that_o people_n afterward_o it_o shall_v be_v easy_a for_o we_o to_o apply_v the_o same_o to_o our_o own_o time_n &_o age_n now_o like_a as_o that_o be_v a_o double_a kingdom_n that_o be_v to_o say_v corporal_a and_o spiritual_a so_o be_v the_o psalm_n also_o divide_v into_o two_o part_n for_o first_o it_o pray_v for_o the_o church_n and_o then_o for_o the_o politic_a state_n or_o the_o common_a wealth_n verse_n 1._o lord_n remember_v david_n with_o all_o his_o affliction_n the_o history_n of_o the_o king_n do_v declare_v that_o david_n be_v persecute_v of_o saul_n suffer_v many_o and_o great_a affliction_n but_o why_o do_v saul_n thus_o persecute_v david_n because_o he_o be_v anoint_a of_o samuel_n to_o be_v king_n while_o saul_n be_v yet_o live_v for_o hereof_o come_v the_o deadly_a persecution_n dead_a the_o hatred_n slander_n reproach_n &_o all_o kind_n of_o calamity_n which_o david_n suffer_v now_o whereas_o these_o trouble_n &_o affliction_n of_o david_n be_v mention_v in_o prayer_n and_o in_o the_o presence_n of_o god_n either_o by_o his_o son_n solomon_n or_o by_o the_o people_n it_o be_v not_o do_v as_o the_o papist_n understand_v the_o form_n then_o the_o matter_n the_o promise_n i_o call_v the_o form_n to_o teach_v &_o set_v forth_o the_o thing_n more_o plain_o and_o the_o matter_n i_o call_v david_n himself_o to_o who_o the_o promise_n be_v make_v mercy_n this_o be_v then_o the_o sense_n and_o meaning_n of_o these_o word_n oh_o lord_n god_n we_o pray_v unto_o thou_o for_o the_o kingdom_n not_o count_v ourselves_o worthy_a or_o by_o any_o mean_n to_o have_v deserve_v that_o we_o shall_v be_v hear_v but_o as_o daniel_n say_v we_o present_v our_o supplication_n before_o thou_o trust_v in_o thy_o he_o the_o same_o promise_n do_v god_n likewise_o perform_v unto_o david_n affliction_n like_a as_o therefore_o say_v he_o oh_o lord_n thou_o do_v preserve_v david_n suffer_v all_o calamity_n and_o but_o the_o promise_v give_v of_o god_n and_o by_o david_n firm_o retain_v in_o all_o affliction_n such_o a_o david_n the_o papist_n do_v not_o know_v and_o because_o they_o know_v but_o only_o the_o and_o all_o the_o faithful_a verse_n 2._o who_o swear_v unto_o the_o lord_n and_o vow_v unto_o the_o god_n of_o jacob_n say_v it_o seem_v that_o these_o word_n may_v not_o unfit_o be_v apply_v unto_o solomon_n as_o the_o author_n of_o the_o psalm_n for_o thus_o he_o say_v in_o effect_n thou_o have_v promise_v unto_o david_n the_o kingdom_n david_n again_o promise_v to_o build_v unto_o thou_o a_o promise_n it_o may_v also_o be_v easy_o understand_v by_o that_o which_o we_o have_v say_v before_o for_o herein_o consist_v all_o this_o heavenly_a wisdom_n that_o we_o do_v utter_o remove_v out_o of_o our_o sight_n what_o so_o ever_o flesh_n can_v comprehend_v and_o believe_v that_o which_o the_o word_n only_o tell_v we_o even_o against_o all_o that_o which_o either_o we_o know_v feel_v or_o as_o be_v not_o utter_o void_a of_o understanding_n that_o no_o man_n live_v overcome_v by_o his_o own_o work_n or_o righteousness_n in_o god_n sight_n and_o yet_o the_o whole_a nature_n of_o man_n preach_v all_o heresy_n may_v easy_o be_v overthrow_v and_o hereof_o the_o papacy_n be_v a_o notable_a example_n they_o which_o by_o the_o preach_n and_o publish_v of_o this_o one_o point_n of_o doctrine_n be_v now_o vanquish_v and_o banish_v out_o of_o man_n heart_n for_o although_o you_o reprove_v the_o life_n of_o the_o papist_n and_o speak_v against_o their_o whoredom_n covetousness_n tyranny_n and_o such_o like_a enormity_n never_o so_o much_o and_o by_o the_o evil_a work_n of_o the_o law_n detect_v their_o impiety_n yet_o shall_v you_o nothing_o prevail_v for_o all_o this_o the_o pope_n do_v not_o stick_v to_o confess_v as_o in_o deed_n he_o can_v never_o deny_v his_o manifest_a abomination_n but_o say_v he_o although_o our_o life_n be_v defile_v with_o sin_n yet_o our_o himself_o that_o he_o will_v easy_o break_v out_o as_o it_o be_v through_o a_o spider_n web_n and_o lose_v nothing_o of_o all_o his_o power_n but_o than_o be_v he_o overcome_v in_o deed_n when_o the_o doctrine_n of_o faith_n be_v diligent_o and_o true_o teach_v and_o that_o the_o papist_n have_v not_o only_o lose_v but_o also_o have_v deface_v with_o their_o filthy_a doctrine_n and_o opinion_n both_o christ_n and_o the_o true_a manner_n of_o justification_n flight_n if_o we_o stick_v to_o this_o ankerhold_v both_o the_o pope_n and_o satan_n shall_v be_v put_v to_o flight_n for_o if_o be_v call_v a_o jew_n and_o rest_v in_o the_o law_n and_o glory_v in_o god_n etc_n etc_n they_o that_o be_v such_o be_v not_o move_v with_o the_o authority_n of_o the_o apostle_n nor_o with_o the_o miracle_n of_o christ_n raise_v up_o the_o dead_a to_o life_n but_o be_v as_o unsensible_a as_o stone_n for_o in_o this_o security_n they_o be_v not_o only_o ignorant_a what_o this_o propitiation_n and_o this_o mercy_n be_v but_o also_o they_o persecute_v the_o same_o such_o therefore_o do_v commit_v a_o double_a sin_n more_o grievous_a than_o the_o publican_n and_o our_o saviour_n christ_n say_v well_o of_o they_o harlot_n and_o publican_n shall_v enter_v before_o you_o into_o the_o kingdom_n of_o heaven_n for_o they_o be_v easy_o persuade_v that_o they_o be_v sinner_n and_o that_o the_o word_n of_o god_n but_o to_o teach_v and_o instruct_v the_o church_n to_o govern_v the_o common_a wealth_n be_v in_o deed_n most_o holy_a and_o excellent_a work_n and_o yet_o be_v they_o the_o work_n of_o the_o law_n which_o of_o themselves_o bring_v either_o desperation_n or_o presumption_n wherefore_o though_o these_o work_n be_v never_o so_o perfect_a and_o holy_a yet_o be_v there_o no_o salvation_n but_o in_o this_o alone_a that_o there_o be_v mercy_n with_o the_o lord_n that_o he_o may_v be_v fear_v fear_v wherefore_o god_n have_v just_o shut_v up_o all_o under_o sin_n that_o he_o may_v have_v mercy_n upon_o all_o for_o if_o you_o leave_v any_o thing_n to_o the_o nature_n of_o man_n whereby_o he_o may_v deserve_v the_o favour_n of_o god_n no_o man_n will_v fear_v or_o worship_n be_v hang_v up_o upon_o a_o tree_n then_o gird_v while_o he_o think_v by_o the_o observation_n of_o other_o tradition_n to_o please_v god_n do_v he_o not_o depart_v from_o the_o true_a god_n &_o set_v his_o own_o imagination_n in_o the_o stead_n of_o god_n while_o he_o be_v persuade_v that_o god_n think_v the_o same_o that_o he_o imagine_v of_o the_o righteousness_n of_o the_o law_n therefore_o follow_v plain_a idolatry_n which_o imagine_v a_o strange_a god_n and_o lose_v the_o true_a god_n for_o the_o true_a god_n be_v propitiation_n and_o mercy_n through_o christ_n but_o such_o as_o glory_v in_o their_o work_n will_v make_v their_o work_n propitiatory_a and_o available_a to_o deserve_v grace_n believe_v wherefore_o god_n reject_v all_o work_n and_o set_v forth_o his_o naked_a and_o bare_a mercy_n that_o he_o may_v be_v fear_v and_o not_o contemn_v of_o the_o presumptuous_a hereby_o take_v away_o all_o cause_n of_o presumption_n let_v we_o learn_v then_o out_o of_o this_o verse_n or_o this_o general_a proposition_n that_o when_o the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o remission_n of_o sin_n of_o grace_n or_o propitiation_n be_v lose_v it_o follow_v that_o in_o steed_n thereof_o idolatry_n must_v needs_o reign_v for_o take_v away_o grace_n &_o the_o fear_n of_o god_n also_o as_o the_o prophet_n say_v must_v needs_o follow_v and_o what_o be_v it_o else_o to_o fear_n god_n but_o to_o reverence_v &_o to_o worship_n god_n also_o to_o acknowledge_v that_o he_o be_v full_a of_o mercy_n &_o goodness_n &_o therefore_o to_o obey_v he_o this_o god_n do_v i_o lose_v when_o i_o be_v a_o monk_n and_o walk_v in_o the_o confidence_n of_o my_o own_o righteousness_n for_o by_o experience_n i_o be_o able_a to_o prove_v that_o of_o the_o most_o perfect_a righteousness_n of_o the_o law_n there_o can_v nothing_o else_o follow_v but_o either_o desperation_n which_o be_v more_o seldom_o or_o presumption_n which_o be_v more_o common_a for_o the_o nature_n of_o man_n and_o the_o devil_n can_v not_o beware_v but_o they_o must_v needs_o presume_v thou_o will_v say_v then_o shall_v we_o not_o keep_v the_o law_n justify_v shall_v we_o not_o do_v good_a work_n yes_o very_o we_o be_v bind_v to_o do_v they_o for_o god_n therefore_o have_v a_o church_n
righteousness_n or_o unrighteousness_n but_o if_o thou_o will_v mark_v our_o iniquity_n if_o thou_o in_o judgement_n will_v demand_v whether_o we_o be_v righteous_a then_o must_v we_o needs_o perish_v wherefore_o we_o appeal_v from_o thy_o judgement_n unto_o the_o throne_n of_o thy_o mercy_n if_o we_o have_v do_v any_o thing_n well_o it_o be_v thy_o free_a gift_n alone_o look_v upon_o we_o therefore_o with_o the_o eye_n of_o thy_o mercy_n and_o not_o with_o the_o eye_n of_o the_o justice_n of_o thy_o judgement_n for_o if_o thou_o do_v not_o pardon_v our_o iniquity_n and_o close_v thine_o eye_n that_o thou_o behold_v they_o not_o we_o shall_v not_o be_v save_v etc_n etc_n this_o light_n of_o doctrine_n we_o see_v that_o david_n follow_v even_o in_o the_o darkness_n of_o the_o law_n us._n but_o our_o case_n be_v now_o much_o better_o for_o as_o much_o as_o we_o see_v these_o thing_n clear_o set_v before_o our_o eye_n in_o the_o new_a testament_n for_o what_o teach_v we_o else_o at_o this_o day_n but_o that_o we_o be_v save_v by_o faith_n alone_o in_o the_o death_n and_o blood_n of_o christ_n that_o by_o the_o merit_n of_o christ_n only_o our_o sin_n be_v cover_v and_o take_v away_o according_a to_o that_o say_n bless_a be_v they_o who_o sin_n be_v forgive_v forgiveness_n of_o sin_n than_o be_v that_o heaven_n under_o the_o which_o we_o dwell_v through_o our_o trust_n and_o confidence_n in_o the_o merit_n of_o christ_n for_o he_o that_o believe_v shall_v not_o be_v condemn_v but_o shall_v pass_v from_o death_n to_o eternal_a life_n david_n add_v here_o no_o express_a mention_n of_o christ_n and_o yet_o because_o he_o hope_v for_o mercy_n therefore_o he_o look_v straight_o to_o this_o mercy_n seat_n that_o afterward_o shall_v more_o clear_o be_v reveil_v in_o the_o new_a testament_n for_o you_o see_v that_o he_o signify_v no_o less_o but_o if_o god_n shall_v mark_v his_o iniquity_n he_o must_v needs_o despair_v for_o without_o remission_n of_o sin_n or_o knowledge_n of_o grace_n what_o have_v we_o to_o rest_v upon_o what_o safety_n may_v we_o find_v they_o therefore_o that_o put_v not_o their_o trust_n herein_o alone_o that_o by_o the_o death_n of_o christ_n their_o sin_n be_v take_v away_o and_o god_n eye_n close_v that_o he_o will_v not_o see_v their_o sin_n must_v needs_o perish_v for_o this_o only_o do_v the_o scripture_n set_v forth_o that_o our_o life_n rest_v whole_o and_o alone_o in_o the_o remission_n of_o sin_n and_o in_o that_o the_o lord_n will_v not_o see_v our_o sin_n but_o in_o mercy_n cover_v they_o and_o will_v not_o remember_v they_o or_o lay_v they_o to_o our_o charge_n so_o that_o we_o must_v acknowledge_v &_o confess_v that_o we_o know_v nothing_o but_o the_o righteousness_n of_o christ_n not_o that_o we_o shall_v not_o now_o work_v and_o bring_v forth_o the_o fruit_n of_o a_o holy_a life_n not_o that_o there_o be_v no_o sin_n in_o we_o or_o that_o god_n do_v not_o hate_v the_o same_o but_o because_o god_n say_v and_o promise_v that_o he_o will_v not_o mark_v our_o transgression_n because_o we_o believe_v in_o christ_n and_o put_v our_o trust_n in_o he_o this_o shield_n whosoever_o hold_v out_o for_o his_o defence_n and_o hide_v himself_o under_o it_o they_o god_n accept_v as_o his_o child_n because_o they_o have_v a_o saviour_n but_o they_o that_o have_v not_o be_v drive_v to_o despair_v for_o what_o can_v all_o their_o work_n their_o merit_n their_o righteousness_n do_v see_v david_n say_v if_o thou_o mark_v our_o iniquity_n oh_o lord_n who_o shall_v be_v able_a to_o stand_v in_o thy_o sight_n in_o this_o verse_n therefore_o consist_v altogether_o which_o hereafter_o follow_v verse_n 4._o but_o mercy_n be_v with_o thou_o that_o thou_o may_v be_v fear_v this_o mercy_n thou_o shall_v not_o find_v in_o moses_n in_o the_o law_n or_o in_o the_o work_n of_o the_o law_n not_o in_o monkery_n not_o in_o a_o strait_a and_o painful_a life_n not_o in_o alm_n deed_n etc_n etc_n brief_o this_o mercy_n thou_o shall_v find_v no_o where_o be_v because_o it_o be_v not_o where_o but_o with_o the_o lord_n mercy_n therefore_o be_v not_o our_o merit_n or_o our_o righteousness_n but_o it_o be_v the_o free_a pardon_n of_o our_o sin_n by_o christ_n alone_o which_o mercy_n although_o thou_o shall_v afflict_v and_o punish_v thyself_o in_o a_o monastery_n a_o thousand_o year_n or_o do_v never_o so_o many_o so_o perfect_a or_o so_o holy_a work_n thou_o shall_v never_o find_v as_o the_o conscience_n which_o even_o in_o a_o most_o strait_o and_o holy_a life_n feell_v desperation_n do_v sufficient_o witness_v but_o herein_o alone_a the_o conscience_n find_v rest_n and_o comfort_n when_o altogether_o naked_a &_o without_o any_o addition_n of_o her_o own_o worthiness_n it_o commit_v itself_o to_o the_o naked_a and_o bare_a mercy_n of_o god_n and_o say_v oh_o lord_n i_o have_v thy_o promise_n that_o righteousness_n come_v of_o mercy_n alone_o which_o righteousness_n be_v nothing_o else_o but_o thy_o free_a pardon_n that_o be_v to_o say_v that_o thou_o will_v not_o mark_v our_o iniquity_n i_o commend_v therefore_o unto_o you_o this_o definition_n of_o righteousness_n which_o david_n here_o set_v forth_o be_v that_o to_o mark_v sin_n be_v to_o condemn_v again_o not_o to_o mark_v sin_n be_v to_o justify_v or_o pronounce_v a_o man_n righteous_a and_o this_o be_v true_a righteousness_n in_o deed_n when_o sin_n be_v not_o mark_v but_o pardon_v &_o not_o impute_v likewise_o in_o a_o other_o place_n also_o he_o define_v a_o bless_a man_n and_o paul_n allege_v the_o same_o defini-nition_a very_o apt_o blessed_a be_v the_o man_n say_v he_o to_o who_o god_n impute_v not_o his_o sin_n he_o say_v not_o bless_a be_v the_o man_n which_o have_v no_o sin_n but_o unto_o who_o the_o lord_n do_v not_o impute_v that_o sin_n which_o he_o have_v as_o here_o also_o he_o say_v when_o sin_n be_v not_o mark_v these_o testimony_n must_v be_v diligent_o collect_v and_o note_v that_o we_o may_v see_v how_o that_o this_o doctrine_n be_v found_v upon_o the_o holy_a scripture_n and_o that_o all_o the_o confidence_n and_o trust_v that_o man_n can_v have_v in_o the_o righteousness_n of_o work_n or_o of_o the_o law_n be_v utter_o cut_v of_o in_o the_o judgement_n of_o god._n for_o this_o doctrine_n make_v all_o man_n alike_o and_o before_o god_n leave_v no_o difference_n alike_o for_o if_o by_o imputation_n only_o we_o be_v righteous_a it_o follow_v that_o not_o only_o we_o be_v all_o sinner_n but_o that_o also_o there_o be_v no_o differenee_n between_o the_o learned_a &_o unlearned_a the_o wise_a and_o the_o simple_a the_o marry_a and_o unmarried_a the_o prince_n and_o the_o ploughman_n etc_n etc_n for_o this_o difference_n of_o degree_n in_o the_o judgement_n of_o god_n avail_v nothing_o but_o this_o only_a avail_v before_o god_n that_o our_o sin_n be_v forgive_v wherefore_o if_o this_o doctrive_v have_v be_v heretofore_o diligent_o teach_v all_o monkry_n &_o such_o other_o monstrous_a kind_n of_o life_n have_v not_o be_v bring_v into_o the_o church_n which_o the_o foolish_a people_n have_v believe_v to_o be_v more_o holy_a than_o other_o for_o what_o soever_o kind_a of_o life_n a_o man_n be_v in_o this_o be_v the_o condition_n of_o we_o all_o that_o we_o have_v need_n of_o forgiveness_n of_o sin_n as_o paul_n teach_v in_o the_o act_n where_o he_o show_v that_o god_n suffer_v the_o manner_n of_o our_o father_n 13._o like_v as_o a_o good_a husband_n suffer_v and_o bear_v with_o the_o manner_n of_o his_o wife_n the_o master_n of_o his_o scholar_n the_o prince_n of_o his_o subject_n now_o if_o this_o evil_a life_n have_v need_n of_o such_o discretion_n and_o moderation_n that_o man_n shall_v not_o be_v always_o extreme_a and_o rigorous_a in_o deal_v one_o towards_o a_o other_o how_o much_o more_o need_n have_v we_o that_o god_n shall_v bear_v with_o we_o in_o this_o our_o great_a weakness_n and_o corruption_n if_o god_n shall_v deal_v sharp_o with_o we_o than_o shall_v our_o transgression_n daily_a and_o continual_o move_v he_o to_o mark_v strait_o and_o sharp_o to_o punish_v we_o but_o he_o will_v not_o mark_v our_o iniquity_n this_o he_o require_v that_o we_o believe_v in_o christ_n then_o will_v he_o bear_v with_o we_o then_o will_v he_o wink_v at_o our_o weakness_n and_o pardon_v our_o transgression_n yea_o in_o respect_n of_o our_o faith_n in_o christ_n he_o will_v accept_v we_o as_o righteous_a thus_o david_n turn_v himself_o from_o desperation_n to_o a_o assure_a hope_n and_o trust_v in_o god_n mercy_n for_o when_o we_o look_v to_o our_o sin_n it_o can_v not_o be_v but_o we_o must_v needs_o be_v vex_v and_o fall_v to_o desperation_n â–ª_o but_o we_o must_v not_o
