the_o prophet_n say_v of_o the_o hypocrite_n they_o hang_v down_o their_o head_n for_o a_o day_n as_o a_o bulrush_n but_o the_o lord_n abhor_v they_o and_o their_o service_n but_o the_o like_a thing_n that_o i_o know_v to_o true_a humiliation_n be_v that_o that_o wicked_a man_n shall_v have_v at_o the_o day_n judgement_n then_o i_o find_v that_o there_o will_v be_v somewhat_o like_o it_o i_o find_v then_o that_o the_o wicked_a man_n his_o mouth_n shall_v be_v stop_v he_o shall_v be_v so_o far_o humble_v that_o he_o shall_v have_v no_o argument_n to_o plead_v for_o himself_o he_o shall_v have_v no_o cloak_n for_o his_o sin_n then_o the_o pride_n of_o wicked_a man_n will_v be_v pull_v down_o in_o a_o great_a measure_n in_o a_o sort_n notwithstanding_o it_o be_v not_o true_a humiliation_n any_o thing_n therefore_o it_o be_v say_v in_o mat._n 22._o in_o hell_n there_o shall_v be_v weep_v and_o wail_v and_o gnash_v of_o tooth_n there_o be_v gnash_n of_o tooth_n for_o vexation_n and_o anguish_n there_o be_v no_o true_a humiliation_n or_o shall_v be_v in_o hell_n world_n without_o end_n nor_o there_o be_v no_o carnal_a man_n upon_o earth_n that_o be_v true_o humble_v therefore_o to_o conclude_v do_v not_o wonder_v i_o say_v cease_v worse_o not_o to_o wonder_v that_o the_o wicked_a grow_v worse_o wonder_v for_o indeed_o a_o man_n can_v choose_v but_o wonder_n but_o endeavour_v to_o cease_v wonder_v when_o you_o see_v carnal_a man_n and_o hypocrite_n notwithstanding_o all_o those_o mean_n wherein_o you_o see_v god_n come_v clear_o in_o the_o eye_n of_o they_o yet_o notwithstanding_o they_o grow_v worse_o and_o worse_o proud_a &_o proud_a and_o more_o harden_v and_o more_o covetous_a and_o more_o carnal_a wonder_v not_o at_o it_o because_o in_o all_o these_o though_o you_o see_v god_n and_o be_v better_v and_o more_o humble_v as_o now_o in_o the_o carriage_n of_o thing_n in_o these_o time_n every_o honest_a heart_n make_v a_o holy_a use_n of_o it_o and_o god_n will_v discover_v himself_o to_o many_o of_o his_o people_n through_o that_o they_o shall_v be_v better_o for_o it_o but_o wonder_v not_o at_o worldly_a people_n that_o they_o be_v worse_o they_o never_o have_v a_o sight_n of_o god_n wonder_v not_o that_o sinner_n and_o wicked_a man_n under_o the_o mean_n of_o grace_n be_v nothing_o better_o as_o i_o fear_v there_o be_v many_o in_o this_o and_o in_o other_o congregation_n that_o notwithstanding_o all_o the_o mean_n of_o grace_n notwithstanding_o all_o the_o teach_n and_o preach_v and_o beseech_v and_o exhort_v yet_o they_o sometime_o in_o secret_a can_v laugh_v and_o jeer_v at_o religion_n and_o persecute_v those_o that_o embrace_v it_o a_o man_n will_v wonder_v at_o this_o how_o man_n shall_v be_v so_o sottish_a as_o to_o learn_v nothing_o how_o man_n shall_v be_v so_o profane_a under_o such_o mean_n and_o ministry_n and_o amend_v nothing_o i_o say_v a_o man_n will_v wonder_v but_o only_o that_o it_o come_v from_o this_o god_n have_v not_o show_v himself_o to_o they_o if_o they_o have_v but_o one_o sight_n of_o god_n as_o thou_o that_o be_v a_o saint_n have_v it_o be_v a_o wonderful_a ordinance_n carnal_a man_n worse_o and_o no_o wonder_n because_o god_n have_v not_o discover_v himself_o in_o these_o mercy_n they_o will_v not_o learn_v and_o then_o for_o correction_n a_o man_n will_v think_v that_o correction_n nor_o in_o correction_n god_n do_v deal_v with_o we_o more_o palpable_o than_o he_o do_v with_o egypt_n they_o have_v ten_o plague_n we_o have_v twenty_o or_o thirty_o god_n have_v punish_v we_o and_o then_o god_n stop_v his_o hand_n and_o then_o we_o break_v out_o into_o mischief_n and_o cruelty_n and_o oppression_n and_o then_o god_n turn_v the_o scale_n another_o way_n and_o then_o we_o begin_v to_o amend_v a_o little_a the_o other_o day_n the_o lord_n do_v begin_v very_o fair_o the_o lord_n turn_v the_o scale_n divers_a way_n you_o know_v how_o it_o be_v with_o not_o censure_v god_n because_o they_o see_v it_o not_o it_o be_v but_o their_o own_o ignorance_n that_o they_o do_v not_o comprehend_v it_o as_o if_o you_o shall_v see_v a_o ploughman_n or_o a_o country_n man_n come_v to_o a_o mathematician_n that_o be_v at_o his_o globe_n and_o his_o compass_n and_o be_v draw_v line_n from_o one_o to_o another_o the_o country_n man_n know_v nothing_o of_o this_o but_o he_o will_v not_o therefore_o say_v the_o other_o be_v a_o fool_n and_o do_v he_o know_v not_o what_o he_o will_v rather_o say_v i_o warrant_v you_o he_o be_v a_o scholar_n and_o have_v no_o man_n have_v ever_o see_v god_n but_o his_o heart_n be_v thorough_o humble_v but_o that_o beget_v another_o question_n how_o shall_v i_o know_v whether_o i_o have_v a_o humble_a heart_n or_o no_o i_o tell_v you_o you_o may_v know_v it_o first_o by_o the_o carriage_n of_o your_o soul_n towards_o god_n in_o point_n of_o justification_n in_o regard_n of_o his_o command_n in_o regard_n of_o his_o truth_n in_o regard_n of_o his_o correction_n in_o regard_n of_o his_o mercy_n and_o this_o last_o be_v the_o thing_n i_o do_v endeavour_v to_o open_a to_o you_o the_o last_o day_n second_o you_o may_v know_v whether_o your_o heart_n man_n 2._o true_a humiliation_n know_v by_o our_o carriage_n towards_o man_n be_v true_o humble_v by_o your_o carriage_n towards_o man_n when_o ever_o man_n be_v convert_v to_o god_n there_o the_o heart_n of_o the_o child_n be_v turn_v to_o their_o father_n now_o among_o man_n there_o be_v two_o sort_n in_o general_a they_o be_v either_o sinner_n or_o saint_n i_o shall_v leave_v to_o speak_v of_o our_o carriage_n towards_o saint_n for_o the_o last_o because_o it_o will_v require_v a_o little_a more_o time_n and_o because_o i_o shall_v speak_v but_o a_o few_o word_n of_o this_o of_o the_o carriage_n of_o a_o humble_a heart_n towards_o sinner_n and_o that_o i_o shall_v endeavour_v to_o show_v you_o at_o this_o time_n therefore_o brief_o whosoever_o have_v this_o humble_a frame_n of_o heart_n his_o carriage_n towards_o sinner_n be_v according_a to_o the_o rule_n that_o we_o meekness_n 1._o to_o sinner_n with_o meekness_n read_v of_o titus_n 3._o 2._o to_o speak_v evil_a of_o no_o man_n to_o be_v gentle_a show_v all_o meekness_n unto_o all_o man_n his_o carriage_n i_o say_v be_v meek_a and_o affable_a and_o courteous_a and_o gentle_a towards_o all_o man_n indeed_o there_o be_v no_o heart_n in_o the_o world_n so_o proud_a you_o shall_v observe_v it_o but_o it_o have_v in_o it_o some_o meekness_n and_o especial_o to_o some_o man_n the_o proud_a tyrant_n in_o the_o world_n have_v have_v some_o favourite_n that_o they_o do_v fawn_v on_o and_o in_o some_o sort_n may_v be_v term_v meek_a man_n but_o the_o apostle_n say_v that_o we_o must_v show_v all_o meekness_n and_o that_o unto_o all_o man_n to_o all_o sort_n of_o man_n to_o whoremonger_n to_o drunkard_n to_o those_o that_o deprive_v we_o of_o our_o good_n and_o of_o our_o good_a name_n which_o be_v hard_o to_o do_v but_o i_o will_v give_v you_o a_o scripture_n that_o will_v open_v it_o collos_n 1._o 9_o i_o pray_v for_o you_o say_v paul_n that_o you_o may_v be_v fill_v with_o the_o knowledge_n of_o his_o will_n in_o all_o wisdom_n and_o spiritual_a understanding_n etc._n etc._n if_o the_o lord_n have_v reveal_v himself_o that_o thou_o have_v have_v a_o save_a sight_n of_o he_o than_o the_o lord_n humble_v thy_o heart_n how_o will_v that_o appear_v by_o thy_o carriage_n to_o all_o man_n there_o will_v be_v all_o meekness_n to_o all_o man_n it_o will_v appear_v by_o thy_o affability_n for_o meekness_n and_o humbleness_n have_v the_o same_o name_n in_o the_o original_a moses_n be_v a_o humble_a man_n and_o moses_n be_v a_o very_a meek_a man_n where_o ever_o there_o be_v a_o humble_a heart_n it_o be_v a_o meek_a heart_n there_o will_v be_v meekness_n show_v even_o to_o sinner_n that_o you_o may_v see_v this_o i_o will_v give_v you_o but_o one_o solid_a instance_n instead_o of_o many_o you_o know_v that_o of_o all_o proud_a man_n there_o be_v none_o that_o have_v the_o name_n so_o much_o as_o the_o pharisee_n therefore_o they_o be_v call_v the_o proud_a pharisee_n and_o of_o all_o that_o have_v sinner_n christ_n meekness_n to_o sinner_n be_v humble_v there_o be_v not_o such_o a_o pattern_n of_o humility_n as_o our_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n now_o you_o shall_v see_v how_o the_o pride_n of_o the_o pharisee_n be_v express_v and_o how_o the_o humility_n of_o our_o saviour_n be_v set_v forth_o by_o his_o carriage_n to_o sinner_n as_o he_o say_v mat._n 11._o 28._o come_v and_o learn_v of_o i_o for_o i_o be_o meek_a and_o lowly_a of_o heart_n it_o be_v because_o of_o the_o pride_n of_o our_o heart_n that_o we_o be_v not_o a_o unlawful_a few_o thing_n unlawful_a few_o thing_n that_o be_v unlawful_a under_o the_o gospel_n though_o some_o there_o be_v but_o i_o mean_v for_o servant_n though_o it_o may_v be_v lawful_a yet_o it_o be_v very_o unnecessary_a to_o have_v too_o near_a union_n with_o carnal_a man_n especial_o in_o spiritual_a thing_n beside_o the_o unfaithfulnesse_n that_o may_v be_v find_v but_o the_o church_n and_o though_o otherwise_o he_o be_v honest_a and_o better_a than_o most_o other_o man_n yet_o there_o he_o account_v himself_o the_o worst_a of_o sinner_n that_o be_v one_o thing_n that_o make_v a_o saint_n to_o be_v mild_a and_o affable_a in_o his_o carriage_n to_o sinner_n because_o he_o have_v be_v as_o bad_a or_o worse_o than_o they_o and_o second_o in_o some_o respect_n a_o humble_a heart_n still_o 2._o he_o think_v himself_o as_o bad_a still_o he_o think_v himself_o to_o be_v worse_o still_o true_o i_o will_v tell_v you_o a_o lesson_n that_o it_o may_v be_v be_v a_o mystery_n to_o some_o of_o you_o take_v the_o most_o glorious_a saint_n that_o be_v and_o they_o will_v tell_v you_o that_o all_o the_o good_a that_o be_v in_o they_o it_o be_v rather_o passive_a then_o active_a that_o be_v he_o will_v say_v i_o be_o carry_v on_o by_o god_n mere_o and_o by_o his_o spirit_n it_o be_v god_n that_o do_v it_o i_o know_v not_o how_o nor_o why_o so_o that_o though_o god_n do_v work_v much_o good_a in_o they_o yet_o they_o see_v themselves_o passive_a and_o not_o active_a and_o they_o can_v say_v it_o be_v god_n that_o do_v it_o and_o not_o they_o and_o therefore_o when_o they_o look_v upon_o themselves_o in_o some_o respect_n they_o can_v put_v themselves_o below_o even_o the_o worst_a of_o sinner_n the_o vile_a of_o sinner_n and_o so_o we_o see_v paul_n in_o that_o place_n 1_o tim._n 1._o i_o be_o the_o chief_a of_o sinner_n say_v he_o and_o yet_o to_o i_o be_v more_o mercy_n show_v then_o to_o all_o man_n that_o i_o may_v be_v a_o pattern_n of_o god_n mercy_n to_o all_o man_n therefore_o i_o have_v receive_v more_o mercy_n and_o more_o riches_n of_o grace_n then_o any_o man_n and_o so_o a_o saint_n may_v say_v i_o have_v have_v more_o mercy_n than_o that_o man_n but_o i_o be_v passive_a in_o it_o and_o if_o god_n do_v work_v upon_o that_o man_n but_o half_o that_o which_o he_o have_v do_v on_o i_o he_o will_v have_v be_v far_o better_a than_o i_o be_o three_o he_o think_v though_o there_o be_v a_o difference_n differ_v 3._o he_o know_v god_n make_v he_o to_o differ_v yet_o it_o be_v god_n that_o have_v make_v it_o and_o not_o any_o thing_n in_o himself_o he_o 4._o the_o worst_a sinner_n may_v come_v to_o be_v as_o good_a as_o he_o four_o and_o last_o he_o consider_v that_o the_o vile_a sinner_n may_v be_v in_o god_n good_a time_n better_o than_o he_o remember_v these_o four_o rule_n that_o a_o humble_a heart_n have_v to_o bring_v himself_o to_o be_v affable_a and_o meek_a in_o his_o carriage_n to_o poor_a sinner_n and_o therefore_o you_o shall_v see_v in_o mat._n 19_o compare_v with_o mark_n 10._o when_o the_o young_a man_n come_v to_o christ_n that_o be_v rich_a and_o christ_n bid_v he_o go_v sell_v all_o and_o give_v to_o the_o poor_a he_o will_v not_o do_v it_o but_o go_v away_o sorrowful_a the_o disciple_n come_v to_o christ_n cry_v out_o as_o it_o be_v and_o insult_v over_o he_o and_o say_v their_o course_n in_o sin_n for_o there_o be_v many_o drunkard_n and_o swearer_n and_o jearer_n of_o religion_n and_o prophaner_n of_o the_o lord_n day_n that_o sit_v as_o sot_n all_o the_o year_n and_o be_v never_o awake_v but_o general_o when_o man_n be_v awaken_v law_n sinner_n awaken_v labour_n to_o fulfil_v the_o law_n out_o of_o their_o sin_n this_o be_v the_o resolution_n of_o all_o man_n kind_n of_o every_o man_n none_o except_v unless_o god_n have_v mercy_n on_o he_o he_o be_v ready_a to_o say_v i_o see_v i_o be_o in_o a_o damnable_a way_n and_o this_o course_n will_v bring_v new_a man_n i_o will_v avoid_v that_o which_o be_v evil_a and_o do_v that_o which_o be_v good_a and_o mark_v it_o this_o be_v more_o natural_a to_o man_n then_o sin_n it_o be_v more_o natural_a to_o man_n to_o be_v righteous_a then_o to_o be_v sinful_a because_o he_o be_v righteous_a before_o he_o be_v sinful_a the_o liquor_n that_o be_v put_v first_o into_o a_o vessel_n the_o vessel_n keep_v the_o taste_n of_o that_o long_o than_o of_o any_o that_o be_v put_v into_o it_o afterward_o now_o god_n at_o first_o make_v man_n righteous_a and_o man_n be_v more_o apt_a to_o fall_v to_o that_o kind_n of_o righteousness_n then_o to_o any_o sin_n and_o this_o be_v the_o great_a misery_n of_o people_n every_o one_o in_o some_o fashion_n or_o other_o this_o be_v his_o business_n he_o go_v about_o to_o fulfil_v the_o law_n of_o god_n in_o his_o own_o person_n and_o there_o you_o shall_v have_v one_o pray_v and_o another_o cry_v and_o another_o keep_n so_o many_o fast_n and_o day_n of_o humiliation_n upon_o humiliation_n and_o the_o end_n of_o all_o be_v if_o man_n have_v eye_n to_o see_v it_o his_o endeavour_n be_v to_o fulfil_v the_o law_n of_o god_n he_o endeavour_v to_o scrape_v and_o to_o get_v up_o a_o righteousness_n to_o pay_v the_o law_n of_o god_n you_o can_v conceive_v and_o comprehend_v how_o subject_a you_o and_o i_o be_v to_o this_o misery_n and_o how_o this_o be_v in_o your_o very_a bone_n as_o it_o be_v and_o i_o fear_v true_o it_o be_v the_o great_a part_n of_o your_o religion_n and_o the_o most_o of_o your_o profession_n be_v nothing_o but_o to_o endeavour_v to_o get_v a_o righteousness_n to_o fulfil_v the_o law_n of_o god_n though_o some_o do_v it_o in_o a_o close_o fine_a way_n than_o other_o now_o i_o beseech_v you_o consider_v this_o word_n lay_v do_v no_o man_n can_v fulfil_v the_o law_n by_o do_v down_o this_o thorough_o in_o your_o heart_n that_o it_o be_v a_o vain_a thing_n so_o to_o do_v and_o who_o will_v go_v about_o a_o vain_a thing_n a_o thing_n that_o he_o shall_v never_o bring_v to_o perfection_n for_o it_o be_v not_o every_o paltry_a righteousness_n that_o can_v fulfil_v the_o law_n of_o god_n it_o be_v not_o ten_o thousand_o fasting_n that_o can_v fulfil_v the_o law_n of_o god_n it_o be_v not_o pray_v in_o your_o family_n three_o time_n a_o day_n that_o can_v fulfil_v the_o law_n i_o speak_v not_o against_o these_o thing_n in_o their_o right_a way_n and_o course_n but_o all_o will_v not_o do_v in_o this_o respect_n for_o if_o you_o fail_v but_o once_o if_o you_o miss_v but_o one_o farthing_n you_o be_v go_v if_o you_o have_v but_o one_o bad_a thought_n in_o all_o your_o life_n you_o be_v lose_v therefore_o i_o will_v have_v you_o despair_n of_o get_v by_o your_o own_o do_v and_o suffer_v any_o righteousness_n to_o fulfil_v the_o law_n of_o god_n never_o go_v about_o it_o no_o wise_a man_n will_v go_v and_o buyld_v a_o castle_n in_o the_o air_n it_o be_v reason_n and_o argument_n enough_o in_o any_o natural_a business_n to_o make_v a_o man_n desist_v to_o tell_v he_o it_o be_v a_o vain_a thing_n it_o be_v a_o work_n that_o will_v never_o come_v to_o perfection_n therefore_o desist_v and_o give_v over_o and_o think_v of_o some_o other_o course_n why_o shall_v we_o not_o prevail_v in_o spiritual_a thing_n as_o well_o as_o in_o natural_a let_v every_o man_n lie_v down_o this_o for_o a_o
