vile_a and_o how_o detestable_a they_o be_v and_o what_o it_o be_v to_o offend_v that_o infinite_a and_o inviolable_a majesty_n that_o omnipotent_a jehovah_n who_o create_v all_o thing_n and_o to_o find_v the_o terror_n and_o torment_n of_o that_o inevitable_a wrath_n and_o everlasting_a pain_n and_o if_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n leave_v he_o there_o to_o his_o own_o self_n and_o help_v he_o must_v it_o be_v with_o we_o we_o must_v see_v that_o judgement-seate_n as_o well_o as_o that_o mercy-seat_n this_o be_v wonderful_a he_o be_v even_o now_o speak_v of_o christ_n as_o a_o sweet_a father_n and_o the_o lust_n of_o your_o father_n will_v you_o fulfil_v joh._n 8._o 44._o behold_v how_o great_a matter_n and_o occasion_n the_o papist_n have_v to_o boast_v of_o free_a will_n to_o any_o good_a they_o be_v but_o vain_a blind_a body_n the_o will_n of_o man_n go_v whole_o with_o the_o will_n of_o the_o devil_n there_o be_v no_o such_o a_o thing_n there_o be_v not_o so_o much_o will_n of_o god_n i_o go_v forward_o and_o i_o will_v not_o omit_v the_o natural_a power_n and_o faculty_n of_o the_o soul_n and_o i_o affirm_v that_o there_o be_v no_o power_n of_o the_o soul_n that_o be_v natural_a as_o the_o faculty_n and_o appetite_n of_o eat_v of_o digest_v of_o expel_v but_o all_o be_v infect_v with_o this_o post_n so_o that_o brethren_n there_o be_v never_o a_o power_n of_o the_o soul_n that_o be_v free_a of_o this_o corruption_n will_v you_o understand_v what_o become_v of_o this_o corruption_n and_o what_o it_o do_v be_v in_o the_o soul_n of_o man_n it_o make_v that_o there_o be_v never_o a_o thought_n that_o a_o man_n think_v but_o it_o be_v a_o sin_n and_o if_o thou_o have_v no_o more_o than_o nature_n the_o least_o motion_n of_o thy_o heart_n be_v a_o sin_n in_o y_z e_z sight_n of_o god_n never_o a_o word_n that_o thou_o speak_v but_o it_o be_v a_o sin_n never_o a_o deed_n y_fw-fr t_o thou_o do_v but_o it_o be_v a_o sin_n never_o a_o way_n thou_o will_v go_v but_o it_o be_v a_o sin_n &_o consequent_o it_o make_v thou_o always_o subject_a to_o the_o heavy_a wrath_n of_o god_n if_o thou_o stir_v but_o thy_o hand_n or_o thy_o foot_n thou_o sin_v and_o the_o wrath_n of_o god_n will_v pursue_v and_o follow_v thou_o till_o at_o last_o thou_o be_v casten_z into_o hell_n if_o thou_o be_v not_o renew_v beside_o this_o so_o long_o as_o we_o remain_v in_o nature_n this_o corruption_n and_o pest_n be_v so_o forceable_a in_o every_o one_o of_o we_o that_o there_o be_v not_o one_o sin_n in_o the_o world_n so_o great_a and_o abominable_a but_o with_o pleasure_n and_o delight_v every_o one_o of_o we_o will_v perform_v it_o if_o the_o lord_n of_o his_o mercy_n do_v not_o by_o his_o spirit_n renew_v we_o at_o least_o by_o his_o power_n restrain_v we_o when_o occasion_n be_v present_v the_o root_n and_o seed_n of_o all_o mischief_n under_o the_o sun_n be_v compact_v in_o every_o man_n &_o woman_n marvel_v not_o when_o thou_o see_v some_o run_n to_o adultery_n some_o to_o murder_v some_o to_o sorcery_n and_o witchcraft_n for_o that_o seed_n which_o be_v forceable_a in_o they_o will_v be_v as_o forceable_a in_o thou_o to_o all_o mischief_n if_o the_o lord_n restrain_v thou_o not_o natural_o thou_o be_v as_o bend_v and_o incline_v to_o these_o thing_n as_o they_o be_v if_o the_o lord_n by_o his_o powerful_a providence_n do_v not_o restrain_v thou_o when_o the_o apostle_n paul_n consider_v the_o strength_n and_o the_o force_n of_o that_o corruption_n that_o be_v in_o his_o heart_n he_o say_v i_o know_v that_o in_o i_o that_o be_v in_o my_o flesh_n there_o be_v no_o good_a and_o in_o another_o place_n the_o prophet_n say_v except_o the_o lord_n have_v leave_v a_o seed_n in_o we_o we_o have_v be_v make_v like_o sodom_n and_o gomorrha_n isaiah_n chap._n 1._o verse_n 9_o brethren_n this_o same_o seed_n and_o root_n of_o bitterness_n be_v in_o every_o infant_n you_o think_v they_o be_v angel_n and_o man_n common_o burst_v forth_o and_o be_v fruitful_a in_o evil_a deed_n but_o also_o when_o it_o lurk_v you_o see_v if_o there_o be_v a_o pest_n in_o the_o flesh_n of_o man_n before_o it_o be_v break_v out_o many_o a_o time_n they_o will_v think_v they_o have_v not_o a_o pest_n so_o it_o be_v with_o this_o pest_n it_o will_v lurk_v within_o the_o flesh_n and_o sinew_n of_o the_o heart_n so_o quiet_o that_o a_o man_n will_v think_v he_o be_v the_o whole_v body_n in_o the_o world_n but_o touch_v he_o present_v any_o object_n or_o small_a occasion_n yea_o apply_v but_o the_o holy_a law_n of_o god_n to_o that_o heart_n incontinent_a his_o â—oule_a affection_n and_o lust_n shall_v utter_v themselves_o and_o burst_v out_o even_o as_o you_o see_v sometime_o that_o fire_n will_v be_v so_o hide_v and_o cover_v under_o the_o ash_n that_o it_o will_v not_o appear_v and_o man_n will_v think_v that_o there_o be_v no_o fire_n there_o but_o as_o soon_o as_o there_o be_v any_o meet_a and_o apt_a matter_n as_o wood_n powder_n or_o brimstone_n apply_v than_o it_o will_v manifest_v itself_o and_o burst_v forth_o in_o a_o flame_n even_o so_o albeit_o when_o man_n feel_v not_o their_o foul_a lust_n and_o affection_n they_o seem_v to_o themselves_o to_o be_v holy_a yet_o speak_v to_o they_o of_o the_o law_n of_o god_n forbid_v and_o discharge_v such_o and_o such_o thing_n to_o be_v do_v than_o they_o shall_v find_v the_o passion_n of_o sin_n which_o appear_v before_o to_o be_v dead_a within_o they_o to_o begin_v to_o live_v yea_o to_o rage_n in_o the_o soul_n and_o to_o bring_v forth_o fruit_n unto_o death_n as_o paul_n say_v in_o his_o epistle_n to_o the_o roman_n the_o seven_o chapter_n and_o five_o verse_n and_o then_o when_o these_o passion_n break_v out_o happy_a be_v he_o that_o have_v some_o part_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o regeneration_n to_o repress_v they_o and_o strive_v against_o they_o in_o some_o measure_n for_o natural_o there_o be_v nothing_o in_o we_o to_o gainstand_a they_o but_o whole_o with_o all_o our_o force_n and_o with_o griedinesse_n we_o will_v accomplish_v they_o yea_o the_o devil_n sit_v betwixt_o the_o shoulder_n yea_o in_o the_o very_a heart_n of_o man_n and_o carry_v he_o here_o and_o there_o to_o accomplish_v all_o sort_n of_o mischief_n in_o all_o kind_n of_o filthiness_n and_o shall_v never_o let_v he_o stay_v till_o he_o bring_v he_o to_o destruction_n there_o be_v no_o power_n in_o man_n to_o resist_v and_o therefore_o sin_n be_v say_v to_o reign_v and_o to_o have_v a_o kingdom_n within_o we_o and_o except_o the_o spirit_n of_o christ_n come_v and_o in_o mercy_n either_o hold_v down_o or_o else_o mortify_v and_o slay_v that_o foul_a corruption_n it_o shall_v slay_v we_o at_o the_o last_o you_o see_v then_o so_o be_v the_o estate_n and_o condition_n of_o man_n natural_o when_o this_o corruption_n begin_v to_o utter_v itself_o
the_o lord_n to_o be_v exercise_v in_o the_o mean_n of_o grace_n in_o preach_v prayer_n read_v conference_n etc._n etc._n look_v if_o thou_o have_v a_o pleasure_n to_o approve_v thyself_o in_o all_o thing_n to_o thy_o lord_n and_o master_n look_v if_o thou_o have_v a_o care_n to_o further_a other_o in_o the_o course_n of_o christianity_n and_o way_n of_o repentance_n then_o if_o thou_o have_v these_o token_n thou_o may_v rejoice_v then_o he_o go_v forward_o &_o he_o can_v sufficient_o set_v out_o that_o mercy_n which_o he_o find_v he_o know_v not_o how_o nor_o in_o what_o term_n to_o utter_v &_o proclaim_v it_o if_o we_o can_v find_v that_o mercy_n of_o jesus_n we_o will_v see_v that_o the_o heart_n will_v never_o satisfy_v itself_o with_o think_v of_o it_o or_o the_o mouth_n with_o speak_v of_o it_o and_o to_o the_o intent_n that_o he_o may_v magnify_v the_o greatness_n and_o the_o riches_n of_o the_o mercy_n of_o the_o lord_n he_o confess_v and_o set_v down_o although_o to_o his_o own_o shame_n his_o former_a sinful_a life_n and_o behaviour_n in_o sundry_a degree_n whereas_o before_o say_v he_o i_o be_v a_o blasphemer_n and_o a_o persecuter_n and_o a_o appressor_n look_v if_o he_o think_v much_o of_o himself_o he_o be_v one_o of_o the_o cruel_a persecuter_n that_o ever_o be_v in_o the_o church_n he_o be_v in_o a_o rage_n against_o christ_n behold_v brethren_n paul_n be_v not_o ashamed_a to_o paint_v out_o himself_o in_o his_o own_o colour_n and_o particular_o to_o confess_v his_o former_a evil_a deed_n and_o to_o registrate_n they_o to_o his_o own_o shame_n to_o the_o world_n end_n yea_o you_o shall_v see_v in_o sundry_a place_n where_o he_o speak_v of_o himself_o that_o he_o can_v never_o satisfy_v himself_o in_o aggregate_a his_o own_o wickedness_n the_o sinner_n who_o have_v find_v mercy_n will_v not_o regard_v to_o discover_v his_o sin_n to_o his_o own_o shame_n and_o to_o tell_v all_o the_o world_n of_o they_o that_o he_o may_v glorify_v he_o who_o have_v give_v he_o mercy_n he_o will_v not_o stand_v upon_o his_o reputation_n but_o he_o will_v preserre_v god_n glory_n unto_o his_o own_o account_n he_o will_v glorify_v the_o lord_n with_o his_o own_o shame_n when_o david_n find_v mercy_n for_o his_o vile_a adultery_n and_o abominable_a murder_n he_o not_o only_o confess_v his_o sin_n to_o his_o own_o shame_n but_o also_o ascend_v to_o confess_v the_o natural_a corruption_n which_o he_o have_v from_o the_o loin_n of_o his_o parent_n the_o man_n that_o have_v fall_v into_o a_o notorious_a and_o vile_a sin_n and_o offence_n and_o yet_o for_o shame_n will_v not_o confess_v it_o that_o god_n may_v be_v glorify_v that_o soul_n have_v never_o feel_v the_o mercy_n of_o god_n and_o if_o thou_o have_v feel_v that_o mercy_n of_o god_n thy_o heart_n will_v be_v loose_v and_o thy_o mouth_n also_o to_o glorify_v god_n by_o a_o humble_a confession_n moreover_o you_o may_v perceive_v out_o of_o these_o word_n how_o and_o what_o way_n the_o apostle_n find_v the_o strength_n and_o power_n of_o the_o gospel_n he_o find_v a_o power_n in_o it_o but_o not_o at_o the_o first_o instant_n but_o ere_o ever_o he_o feel_v the_o power_n of_o the_o lord_n he_o find_v himself_o to_o be_v weak_a and_o ere_o he_o feel_v the_o mercy_n of_o god_n he_o find_v himself_o to_o be_v a_o miserable_a man_n thou_o shall_v never_o feel_v the_o power_n of_o god_n except_o first_o thou_o feel_v thy_o own_o weakness_n and_o thou_o shall_v never_o feel_v his_o mercy_n except_o first_o thou_o feel_v thy_o misery_n and_o therefore_o the_o lord_n jesus_n many_o a_o time_n sundry_a way_n cross_v his_o own_o in_o this_o life_n to_o the_o end_n that_o they_o may_v know_v and_o feel_v their_o weakness_n and_o misery_n and_o so_o go_v out_o of_o themselves_o to_o find_v strength_n and_o mercy_n in_o jesus_n christ_n sometime_o he_o will_v exercise_v his_o own_o with_o shame_n and_o reproach_n in_o the_o world_n sometime_o with_o heavy_a disease_n and_o painful_a sickness_n sometime_o with_o want_n of_o the_o outward_a comfort_n of_o this_o life_n sometime_o with_o trouble_n and_o terror_n in_o the_o conscience_n and_o all_o to_o this_o end_n that_o they_o may_v know_v what_o they_o be_v without_o the_o lord_n how_o weak_a how_o frail_a how_o abject_a and_o naughty_a they_o be_v that_o so_o find_v themselves_o as_o nothing_o they_o may_v be_v compel_v to_o renounce_v themselves_o and_o to_o seek_v to_o be_v find_v in_o jesus_n yea_o after_o the_o lord_n have_v draw_v they_o to_o he_o by_o cross_n the_o lord_n use_v all_o the_o day_n of_o their_o life-time_n to_o expone_fw-la they_o to_o cross_n that_o every_o day_n find_v more_o their_o want_n infirmity_n and_o lack_v of_o comfort_n in_o themselves_o they_o may_v the_o more_o daily_a seek_v and_o strive_v to_o be_v find_v in_o jesus_n who_o can_v supply_v all_o their_o want_n and_o furnish_v every_o thing_n that_o they_o stand_v in_o need_n of_o it_o be_v true_a indeed_o many_o a_o time_n the_o lord_n will_v not_o exercise_v his_o own_o with_o cross_n but_o spare_v they_o &_o let_v they_o have_v liberty_n &_o give_v they_o in_o abundance_n find_v in_o many_o other_o of_o the_o saint_n of_o god_n but_o assoon_o as_o he_o call_v they_o effectual_o he_o lay_v the_o cross_n upon_o they_o that_o see_v their_o weakness_n and_o distrust_v themselves_o they_o may_v learn_v to_o renounce_v themselves_o and_o desire_v to_o find_v the_o power_n and_o life_n of_o jesus_n in_o they_o which_o they_o will_v find_v effectual_a in_o the_o cross_n in_o a_o wonderful_a manner_n look_v 2._o cor._n 11._o the_o lord_n lay_v manifold_a cross_n upon_o paul_n and_o when_o with_o tear_n he_o pray_v that_o the_o lord_n will_v take_v they_o away_o he_o get_v this_o answer_n my_o grace_n be_v sufficient_a for_o thou_o for_o my_o power_n be_v make_v perfect_a through_o thy_o weakness_n mean_v that_o he_o will_v be_v glorify_v and_o make_v 4._o 10._o every_o where_o we_o brare_n about_o in_o our_o body_n the_o die_a of_o the_o lord_n jesus_n that_o the_o life_n of_o jesus_n may_v also_o be_v make_v manifest_a in_o our_o body_n etc._n etc._n when_o the_o body_n by_o cross_n be_v die_v than_o he_o find_v the_o life_n of_o christ_n and_o no_o soul_n shall_v find_v that_o life_n without_o it_o be_v die_v therefore_o if_o ever_o thou_o will_v find_v the_o power_n and_o life_n of_o christ_n in_o thou_o be_v careful_a to_o feel_v thy_o own_o weakness_n and_o misery_n yet_o mark_v the_o word_n he_o say_v notwithstanding_o of_o my_o tell_v that_o the_o grace_n of_o the_o lord_n superabounded_a he_o add_v also_o with_o faith_n and_o with_o love_n in_o jesus_n christ_n he_o declare_v that_o superabundant_a grace_n by_o a_o wonderful_a mutation_n and_o change_n that_o be_v make_v in_o he_o by_o the_o power_n of_o jesus_n christ_n that_o of_o a_o blasphemer_n of_o christ_n he_o be_v make_v a_o believer_n apprehend_v he_o by_o faith_n of_o a_o persecuter_n and_o oppressor_n of_o the_o saint_n of_o god_n he_o be_v make_v a_o lover_n of_o they_o the_o sense_n of_o the_o mercy_n of_o god_n &_o faith_n in_o jesus_n christ_n bring_v forth_o love_n in_o the_o heart_n and_o whosoever_o have_v assurance_n of_o mercy_n &_o true_a faith_n his_o heart_n will_v be_v join_v with_o christ_n and_o he_o will_v have_v a_o therefore_o he_o will_v save_v i_o among_o the_o rest_n before_o he_o come_v to_o the_o word_n of_o the_o proposition_n because_o it_o be_v a_o great_a and_o notable_a sentence_n he_o use_v a_o preface_n as_o y_o e_o lord_n jesus_n in_o matter_n of_o importance_n use_v to_o say_v very_o very_o i_o say_v unto_o you_o so_o here_o the_o apostle_n say_v this_o be_v a_o true_a say_n and_o by_o all_o mean_v worthy_a to_o be_v receive_v in_o this_o preface_n he_o prepare_v not_o only_a timothy_n but_o all_o that_o ever_o shall_v hear_v this_o sentence_n unto_o the_o end_n of_o the_o world_n but_o with_o a_o hart_n prepare_v and_o when_o thou_o interest_n into_o the_o church_n thou_o shall_v say_v the_o lord_n prepare_v my_o heart_n that_o i_o may_v receive_v some_o sponke_n of_o grace_n
