the_o lord_n you_o child_n of_o israel_n for_o the_o lord_n have_v a_o controversy_n with_o the_o inhabitant_n of_o the_o land_n because_o there_o be_v no_o truth_n nor_o mercy_n nor_o knowledge_n of_o god_n in_o the_o land_n 2._o by_o swear_v and_o lie_v and_o kill_v and_o steal_v and_o commit_v adultery_n they_o break_v out_o and_o blood_n touch_v blood_n hitherto_o this_o prophet_n in_o the_o lord_n name_v have_v denounce_v the_o final_a destruction_n and_o prophesy_v of_o the_o future_a conversion_n of_o israel_n make_v use_n of_o some_o type_n for_o that_o end_n now_o in_o a_o great_a part_n of_o this_o ensue_a prophecy_n he_o proceed_v in_o more_o plain_a term_n to_o rip_v up_o and_o lay_v open_a the_o iniquity_n of_o this_o people_n and_o to_o reveal_v and_o denounce_v future_a judgement_n if_o so_o be_v there_o may_v be_v any_o hope_n of_o reclaim_v they_o or_o any_o of_o they_o at_o least_o that_o they_o may_v be_v leave_v without_o all_o excuse_n in_o this_o chap._n we_o have_v god_n controversy_n plead_v against_o they_o wherein_o be_v contain_v a_o accusation_n for_o diverse_a sin_n draw_v up_o in_o several_a article_n to_o every_o one_o of_o which_o the_o sentence_n or_o threaten_v be_v subjoin_v in_o these_o verse_n first_o they_o be_v cite_v to_o the_o tribunal_n to_o hear_v the_o controversy_n discuss_v then_o the_o first_o article_n of_o the_o accusation_n be_v subjoin_v which_o be_v more_o general_a lay_v to_o their_o charge_n the_o violation_n of_o the_o law_n in_o many_o omission_n and_o commission_n against_o both_o table_n namely_o that_o there_o be_v no_o truth_n nor_o tenderness_n in_o their_o deal_n no_o spark_n of_o the_o knowledge_n of_o god_n shine_v in_o their_o way_n but_o on_o the_o contrary_a perjury_n and_o rash_a swear_n lie_a murder_n steal_v and_o adultery_n be_v commit_v without_o moderation_n and_o sin_n heap_v upon_o sin_n whence_o learn_v 1._o albeit_o the_o servant_n of_o the_o lord_n may_v ofttimes_o have_v little_a or_o no_o ground_n of_o hope_n that_o their_o ministry_n shall_v have_v any_o success_n among_o a_o people_n yet_o it_o be_v their_o duty_n have_v god_n call_v not_o to_o give_v over_o while_o they_o have_v any_o opportunity_n for_o albeit_o in_o the_o former_a sermon_n the_o matter_n be_v so_o close_v that_o israel_n be_v certain_o to_o go_v into_o captivity_n yet_o hosea_n do_v not_o give_v over_o plead_v as_o god_n do_v put_v they_o to_o it_o when_o they_o be_v lay_v by_o jer._n 20.9_o so_o their_o ministry_n will_v have_v its_o own_o success_n one_o way_n or_o other_o isa_n 55.10_o 11._o and_o their_o labour_n will_v not_o be_v lose_v before_o the_o lord_n isa_n 49.4_o 5._o 2._o as_o they_o who_o be_v near_a to_o god_n for_o outward_a relation_n may_v have_v their_o own_o gross_a fault_n which_o their_o title_n and_o privilege_n will_v not_o cover_v so_o the_o lord_n will_v especial_o contend_v with_o they_o because_o of_o these_o for_o so_o be_v on_o they_o to_o receive_v they_o with_o other_o respect_n than_o be_v give_v when_o man_n be_v only_o see_v for_o this_o end_n do_v he_o begin_v with_o hear_v the_o word_n of_o the_o lord_n 4._o when_o people_n and_o especial_o the_o church_n do_v sin_n they_o must_v expect_v a_o process_n to_o follow_v it_o and_o when_o people_n do_v not_o make_v right_a use_n of_o better_a tiding_n from_o the_o word_n they_o must_v expect_v sad_a challenge_n and_o sentence_n from_o it_o and_o when_o the_o authority_n of_o god_n contend_v by_o his_o word_n be_v not_o heed_v the_o lord_n be_v provoke_v to_o plead_v the_o controversy_n more_o immediate_o for_o the_o lord_n have_v a_o controversy_n follow_v on_o sin_n and_o this_o be_v plead_v partly_o by_o the_o word_n here_o and_o that_o not_o succeed_v by_o the_o judgement_n here_o threaten_v 5._o sin_n be_v so_o much_o the_o more_o odious_a and_o do_v provoke_v god_n when_o it_o be_v universal_a and_o commit_v by_o these_o who_o have_v find_v he_o true_a in_o his_o promise_n and_o rich_a in_o his_o bounty_n to_o they_o for_o it_o be_v a_o controversy_n with_o the_o inhabitant_n of_o the_o land_n or_o with_o the_o body_n of_o the_o people_n now_o corrupt_v and_o with_o the_o people_n who_o be_v settle_v in_o that_o good_a land_n which_o he_o have_v swear_v to_o their_o father_n to_o give_v it_o they_o 6._o it_o do_v commend_v the_o lord_n mercy_n and_o clear_v his_o justice_n when_o it_o be_v manifest_v on_o his_o sinful_a people_n that_o he_o do_v not_o strike_v before_o he_o have_v warn_v they_o of_o their_o danger_n and_o debate_v the_o matter_n with_o they_o for_o here_o he_o warn_v they_o by_o the_o prophet_n and_o before_o he_o execute_v the_o sentence_n he_o do_v plead_v the_o cause_n that_o they_o may_v consider_v of_o it_o 7._o as_o the_o visible_a church_n not_o walk_v with_o god_n may_v become_v monstrous_a in_o sinfulness_n so_o the_o lord_n do_v not_o contend_v with_o she_o without_o cause_n second_o table_n therefore_o do_v he_o begin_v the_o challenge_n with_o these_o and_o insist_v most_o on_o they_o 9_o whatever_o secret_a mourner_n there_o may_v be_v in_o a_o corrupt_a church_n yet_o when_o the_o contagion_n become_v general_a and_o rise_v to_o a_o height_n the_o lord_n will_v take_v no_o notice_n of_o they_o as_o to_o hold_v off_o a_o common_a calamity_n for_o albeit_o there_o be_v no_o doubt_n some_o good_a man_n in_o the_o land_n yet_o he_o say_v there_o be_v no_o truth_n etc._n etc._n in_o the_o land_n because_o they_o may_v get_v their_o soul_n for_o a_o prey_n but_o will_v not_o turn_v his_o anger_n from_o the_o land_n see_v ezek._n 9.4_o 5._o &_o 14.14_o 16_o 18._o 10._o the_o lord_n abhor_v flattery_n in_o his_o people_n their_o want_n of_o ingenuity_n their_o politic_a and_o subtle_a carriage_n and_o unfaithfulness_n and_o deceit_n in_o bargain_n and_o trust_v that_o may_v be_v the_o cause_n of_o god_n sore_a controversy_n which_o man_n look_v on_o as_o a_o handsome_a conveyance_n for_o the_o lord_n have_v a_o controversy_n because_o there_o be_v no_o truth_n 11._o such_o as_o cast_v off_o bowel_n of_o mercy_n and_o exercise_v oppression_n either_o where_o the_o cause_n be_v unjust_a or_o a_o just_a cause_n cruel_o prosecute_v and_o affliction_n add_v to_o the_o afflict_a may_v expect_v judgement_n without_o mercy_n if_o they_o persevere_v in_o it_o for_o the_o lord_n have_v a_o controversy_n because_o there_o be_v no_o mercy_n 12._o as_o the_o true_a knowledge_n of_o god_n be_v the_o fountain_n and_o root_n of_o true_a religion_n and_o as_o man_n ill_a carriage_n in_o duty_n one_o to_o another_o do_v prove_v they_o void_a of_o the_o knowledge_n of_o god_n and_o of_o religion_n profess_v what_o they_o will_v so_o ignorance_n of_o god_n continue_v in_o and_o affect_v and_o appear_v in_o such_o effect_n be_v the_o matter_n of_o a_o sad_a controversy_n against_o the_o church_n for_o he_o challenge_v that_o there_o be_v no_o knowledge_n of_o god_n in_o the_o land_n that_o be_v they_o be_v void_a of_o any_o religion_n which_o flow_v from_o save_v knowledge_n of_o god_n and_o accompany_v it_o and_o in_o their_o way_n towards_o other_o they_o walk_v as_o if_o there_o be_v no_o god_n in_o heaven_n and_o this_o be_v a_o sad_a challenge_n when_o it_o be_v in_o the_o land_n where_o he_o may_v and_o especial_o shall_v be_v know_v and_o acknowledge_v psal_n 76.1_o see_v ps_n 14.1_o 2_o thess_n 1.8_o 13._o not_o only_o perjury_n and_o false_a swear_n but_o vain_a and_o rash_a swear_n wherein_o man_n bewray_v their_o high_a presumption_n in_o profane_v the_o name_n of_o god_n and_o violate_v his_o command_n without_o any_o the_o least_o appearance_n of_o profit_n or_o advantage_n will_v be_v plead_v against_o when_o stroke_n after_o stroke_n till_o he_o cease_v to_o be_v but_o let_v we_o subsist_v under_o our_o sad_a condition_n 3._o though_o we_o be_v ready_o embitter_v under_o present_a trouble_n and_o that_o we_o be_v not_o rid_v of_o they_o even_o by_o cut_v off_o when_o there_o be_v no_o other_o present_a issue_n yet_o that_o be_v but_o our_o pride_n and_o our_o case_n will_v appear_v otherwise_o if_o we_o consider_v that_o preservation_n may_v portend_v much_o future_a good_a to_o be_v lay_v up_o for_o a_o people_n or_o for_o the_o elect_a among_o they_o as_o the_o lord_n here_o manifest_v afterward_o doct._n 5._o it_o be_v the_o great_a mercy_n and_o advantage_n of_o the_o lord_n sinful_a people_n that_o they_o have_v to_o do_v with_o god_n and_o not_o with_o man_n in_o their_o miscarriage_n for_o man_n pity_n and_o mercy_n may_v be_v exhaust_v be_v it_o never_o so_o great_a but_o god_n be_v infinite_a pitiful_a and_o merciful_a man_n may_v for_o a_o time_n be_v so_o total_o transport_v with_o anger_n as_o to_o do_v that_o which_o afterward_o they_o will_v repent_v of_o but_o he_o be_v the_o lord_n not_o subject_a to_o such_o perturbation_n man_n may_v change_v and_o be_v maintain_v by_o their_o chief_a city_n samaria_n though_o it_o be_v their_o sin_n and_o not_o their_o god_n that_o though_o they_o pretend_v to_o worship_v the_o true_a god_n in_o this_o and_o to_o swear_v by_o his_o name_n yet_o they_o do_v not_o honour_v he_o as_o he_o reveal_v himself_o in_o his_o word_n and_o be_v acknowledge_v in_o his_o true_a church_n but_o do_v swear_v by_o he_o as_o he_o be_v worship_v in_o dan_n and_o by_o the_o god_n who_o way_n and_o manner_n of_o service_n they_o have_v erect_v at_o beersheba_n and_o so_o they_o give_v that_o honour_n to_o their_o idol_n and_o calf_n immediate_o and_o pretend_v to_o offer_v it_o to_o god_n only_o in_o and_o by_o these_o idol_n doct._n 1._o god_n have_v a_o special_a controversy_n against_o idolater_n and_o corrupter_n of_o religion_n in_o his_o church_n therefore_o be_v there_o a_o peculiar_a threaten_n against_o such_o 2._o the_o true_a god_n will_v not_o acknowledge_v any_o service_n as_o do_v to_o he_o which_o be_v offer_v in_o any_o idolatrous_a way_n and_o in_o and_o by_o idol_n and_o image_n nor_o will_v he_o acknowledge_v that_o he_o be_v the_o god_n who_o be_v worship_v and_o acknowledge_v in_o such_o away_o for_o albeit_o to_o swear_v by_o the_o true_a god_n be_v a_o part_n of_o his_o worship_n yet_o he_o make_v it_o a_o quarrel_n that_o they_o swear_v by_o he_o as_o represent_v by_o their_o idol_n and_o as_o he_o be_v serve_v in_o dan_n and_o in_o beersheba_n after_o their_o device_n they_o swear_v by_o the_o sin_n of_o samaria_n and_o say_v thy_o god_n o_o dan_o live_v and_o the_o manner_n of_o beersheba_n live_v 3._o idolatry_n will_v be_v especial_o charge_v upon_o these_o who_o be_v chief_a in_o promote_a and_o entertain_v thereof_o for_o in_o that_o respect_n
unto_o the_o lord_n as_o a_o matter_n whereof_o they_o shall_v be_v sure_a and_o grow_v in_o it_o that_o they_o may_v go_v on_o in_o repentance_n 13._o repentance_n and_o conversion_n will_v neither_o be_v go_v about_o in_o our_o own_o strength_n nor_o manage_v with_o discouragement_n nor_o any_o inherent_a change_n wrought_v in_o we_o be_v rest_v on_o as_o sufficient_a to_o make_v up_o our_o peace_n with_o god_n but_o our_o chief_a care_n shall_v be_v to_o embrace_v god_n by_o faith_n as_o we_o through_o christ_n and_o to_o draw_v strength_n out_o of_o he_o for_o the_o duty_n and_o by_o in_o god_n to_o answer_v all_o the_o doubt_n and_o fear_n of_o a_o penitent_a 3._o it_o teach_v how_o willing_a the_o lord_n be_v that_o penitent_n be_v encourage_v as_o may_v be_v evidence_v by_o his_o lay_v out_o that_o fullness_n of_o comfort_n that_o be_v in_o he_o for_o that_o end_n doct._n 16._o god_n graciousnesse_n and_o readiness_n to_o show_v mercy_n free_o without_o our_o deserve_n and_o his_o tender_a bowel_n of_o compassion_n and_o sympathy_n be_v such_o as_o may_v assure_v the_o afflict_a penitent_a that_o he_o will_v be_v respect_v and_o a_o serious_a study_n of_o this_o may_v invite_v sinner_n to_o set_v about_o their_o duty_n in_o hope_n for_o turn_v you_o for_o he_o be_v gracious_a and_o merciful_a 17._o god_n long_a forbearance_n and_o wait_v for_o the_o repentance_n of_o sinner_n before_o he_o strike_v albeit_o it_o may_v make_v the_o stroke_n sad_a when_o it_o come_v yet_o it_o be_v a_o evidence_n and_o argument_n that_o he_o be_v willing_a to_o embrace_v a_o penitent_a turn_v you_o for_o he_o be_v slow_a to_o anger_v 18._o god_n great_a bounty_n and_o kindness_n which_o be_v over_o all_o his_o work_n and_o fill_v the_o earth_n psal_n 33.5_o may_v assure_v the_o penitent_a that_o he_o will_v meet_v with_o special_a kindness_n and_o with_o a_o liberal_a lord_n and_o benefactor_n so_o much_o do_v the_o other_o property_n teach_v he_o be_v the_o evil_a or_o change_v his_o deal_n as_o repenter_n use_v to_o do_v ver._n 14_o who_o know_v if_o he_o will_v return_v and_o repent_v and_o leave_v a_o blessing_n behind_o he_o even_o a_o meat-offering_a and_o a_o drink-offering_a unto_o the_o lord_z your_o god_n the_o second_o reason_n of_o the_o exhortation_n be_v that_o as_o god_n be_v gracious_a in_o himself_o so_o it_o be_v possible_a and_o to_o be_v hope_v that_o upon_o repentance_n he_o will_v avert_v the_o judgement_n so_o far_o as_o the_o people_n shall_v subsist_v and_o the_o public_a worship_n not_o be_v in_o their_o course_n as_o chap_n 1.4_o somewhat_o may_v possible_o be_v preserve_v for_o the_o people_n subsistence_n and_o the_o public_a worship_n and_o partly_o that_o after_o all_o these_o plague_n be_v over_o plenty_n may_v come_v as_o for_o that_o doubtful_a phrase_n who_o know_v &_o c_o we_o may_v for_o further_a understanding_n of_o it_o compare_v what_o be_v say_v on_o jon._n 3.9_o and_o zeph._n 2.3_o doct._n 1._o when_o sinner_n be_v most_o exercise_v in_o the_o duty_n of_o repentance_n yet_o the_o true_a penitent_n hope_n be_v only_o fix_v on_o god_n and_o his_o turn_n and_o change_n of_o deal_v and_o not_o on_o his_o own_o turn_n and_o repentance_n for_o so_o be_v penitent_n direct_v to_o look_v to_o god_n turn_v and_o repent_v 2._o albeit_o god_n will_v be_v certain_o reconcile_v with_o sinner_n upon_o their_o repentance_n and_o faith_n in_o christ_n and_o albeit_o god_n will_v mitigate_v his_o plague_n unto_o penitent_n at_o least_o so_o far_o as_o that_o judgement_n be_v turn_v into_o fatherly_a chastisement_n to_o they_o yet_o repentance_n will_v not_o always_o hold_v off_o or_o take_v off_o a_o temporal_a stroke_n when_o either_o sin_n have_v come_v to_o a_o great_a height_n call_v on_o god_n to_o vindicate_v his_o glory_n in_o punish_v it_o or_o when_o he_o will_v have_v the_o penitent_a yet_o more_o quicken_v up_o in_o his_o repentance_n which_o ready_o he_o will_v fall_v slack_a in_o if_o the_o rod_n be_v away_o and_o albeit_o the_o lord_n may_v intend_v to_o prevent_v or_o remove_v calamity_n yet_o he_o will_v make_v the_o penitent_a more_o solicitous_a diligent_a and_o humble_a by_o keep_v he_o in_o suspense_n about_o it_o for_o these_o cause_v it_o be_v that_o there_o be_v so_o incertain_a like_o a_o promise_n concern_v their_o preservation_n under_o and_o issue_n from_o this_o rod_n who_o know_v if_o he_o will_v return_v &_o c_o 3._o no_o incertainty_n about_o these_o thing_n shall_v discourage_v a_o penitent_a in_o his_o duty_n as_o know_v that_o better_a promise_n be_v sure_a enough_o to_o he_o that_o god_n exercise_v he_o with_o incertainty_n be_v no_o evidence_n that_o he_o will_v not_o do_v even_o that_o for_o he_o and_o that_o however_o it_o go_v he_o be_v in_o god_n way_n for_o attain_v these_o thing_n as_o they_o may_v tend_v to_o his_o good_a therefore_o be_v he_o encourage_v to_o repent_v upon_o this_o same_o who_o know_v if_o he_o will_v return_v &_o c_o 4._o outward_a benefit_n and_o mean_n of_o plenty_n be_v in_o themselves_o a_o blessing_n however_o we_o abuse_v they_o they_o flow_v in_o their_o growth_n and_o preservation_n from_o a_o rich_a blessing_n of_o influence_n they_o do_v we_o good_a because_o god_n put_v a_o blessing_n in_o they_o for_o that_o end_n and_o they_o be_v give_v to_o the_o penitent_a wiâ—h_v a_o special_a blessing_n for_o these_o cause_n be_v the_o fruit_n of_o the_o ground_n here_o call_v a_o blessing_n as_o isa_n 65.8_o because_o as_o they_o be_v give_v to_o mankind_n especial_o in_o any_o measure_n of_o plenty_n they_o be_v a_o common_a favour_n to_o all_o though_o the_o wicked_a make_v they_o a_o snare_n and_o plague_n to_o themselves_o and_o a_o special_a blessing_n to_o the_o godly_a 5._o god_n correct_v will_v not_o hinder_v his_o blessing_n to_o penitent_n and_o there_o may_v be_v rich_a mercy_n wait_v for_o they_o both_o in_o the_o time_n of_o affliction_n to_o make_v they_o subsist_v and_o after_o they_o to_o make_v they_o up_o for_o there_o be_v hope_n that_o upon_o repentance_n he_o will_v leave_v a_o blessing_n behind_o he_o in_o both_o these_o respect_n as_o be_v before_o explain_v 6._o as_o true_a penitent_n will_v be_v most_o affect_v with_o what_o concern_v god_n and_o his_o worship_n in_o
